The Case of the Miraculous Mini Golfer.

-[camera beeps]
-At the start of the school holidays,

we had a call from a guy
who urgently needed our help.

Ava had a choir recital and my
Mum wouldn't let me miss piano,

so, Maudie and Kyle met the guy,
whose name was Charlie, on their own.

Charlie had a big problem.

I think I'm going to lose my job.

Where do you work, Charlie?

You know the Mini Golf park?

Sure, but just answer the question.
Where do you work?

I work at the Mini Golf park.

You work at the Mini Golf park?

The Mini Golf park is this really
cool miniature golf course near us.

Kyle couldn't believe that
Charlie actually works there.

I work full time in the holidays,

and one of my jobs is to
come up with holiday deals.

Like, if you bring five friends,
you get in for free.

You do?

Excuse me, I have to text five friends
about something not related to this.

Go on Charlie.

And so, this holidays,
I thought I'd be a bit different.

And on Sunday I came up
with Twenty for Twenty.

What does Twenty for Twenty mean?

If you can do the whole course in
20 putts or less, you win twenty dollars.

-Twenty putts? No way!
-Is that hard?

Super hard!

There are nine holes, so you'd have
to average two putts per hole

to do it in 18 putts which would leave you
with two extra putts before you hit 20,

but you'd need maybe seven extra putts

because I don't think you
can do it in less than 25.

Kyle has an excellent grasp
of sports related maths.

Charlie said that
Twenty for Twenty was hard...

but not impossible.

I thought it was the sort of thing
a pro-golfer might do,

or people might fluke
maybe three times a year.

Not three times in three days.

People have done the
Twenty for Twenty three times?

Not people... Person.

-I won! I won!
-You won what?

-She won Twenty for Twenty!
-I did the course in 19 putts!

I did her scorecard, look!

Yay Lexy!

I couldn't believe it.

This girl called Lexy had done
the whole course in 19 putts.

-So, you gave her the twenty dollars?
-[Charlie] Of course.

I thought it was the kind of freaky
fluke I was talking about.

That was on Tuesday.

And then on Wednesday, yesterday,
her and her friend Ally came in and...

-She did it again!
-Nineteen putts!

Can you believe it?

[Charlie] No!

This time, I actually couldn't believe it.

Nineteen putts two days in a row?

So, you thought cheated?

I definitely thought they cheated.

Charlie suspected that
Lexy and Ally were scamming

to get the twenty dollars
and split it between them.

The question was...

How can you prove it if
you didn't see them play?

Well, we have CCTV cameras
around the course for security,

so before I handed them the twenty dollars
I said I needed to check the footage.

[excited laughing]

Ally was as surprised as I was
to see Lexy doing so well.

And Lexy didn't appear
to be cheating either?

Not at all.
So, I gave her another twenty dollars.

Then this morning, they came in again.

This time, I decided not
to rely on the cameras.

[Lexy and Ally giggle]

Charlie had no way of proving it but
he was sure Lexy was cheating.

I really need your help.

I've paid her sixty dollars
and my boss is really mad.

He said he won't be hiring
me again next holidays.

I guess Lexy's coming back tomorrow.

She sure is.

Then we'll be there too.

Yes!

First thing the next day,
we all met Charlie there.

Ava was very impressed
with Charlie's marketing skills.

Charlie, I just want to say that
the Twenty for Twenty campaign

-is such an awesome business idea.
-Ava, what are you talking about.

It's a terrible idea! He's losing money
like I lose plastic containers.

Kyle! It was a good idea!

No, it's true, I wish I'd never done it.

Charlie, can I please have
a look at those scorecards?

Charlie gave Maudie the scorecards,

and she asked if we could go look
around the course before Lexy arrived.

Charlie said...

Absolutely!
Take some golf balls and putters.

Okay great. Ezra, you and Kyle can...

Where's Kyle?

Charlie had said the magic words,
'putters and golf balls',

which made Kyle vanish into thin air.

AKA the first hole.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

welcome to a spectacular morning
with perfect weather conditions,

warm, slightly humid, as Klimson
lines up on the putt-putt green.

Kyle, what are you doing?

What does it look like I'm doing?

It looks like you're playing mini golf
when we're supposed to be investigating!

Can't I multi-task?

Kyle can barely single task.

Ava and I thought Kyle was holding
things up, but Maudie said...

Actually, I'd like to see Kyle
demonstrate a couple of holes.

Yes!

I want to see how
difficult it is for someone

with naturally excellent
hand eye coordination.

I can demonstrate for you.

I know I'm not great at sport
but mini golf isn't that hard.

I let Kyle demonstrate.

-So, this hole is par 2.
-What's par 2?

That's the technical term
for how many putts it takes.

This hole's simple...

so, they think it should
take you two putts to get it.

[Kyle] Hear that?

The sweet clink of the ball hitting
the plastic at the bottom of the hole!

Plastic doesn't make
a 'clink' sound, Kyle.

How do you know?

You've never heard the sound
of a golf ball landing in a plastic hole.

-Ha ha.
-Guys! Maudie's trying to think.

Lexy got this in a hole in one
on all three days.

Getting that as a hole in one
seemed impossible.

Especially for me.

Lexy had only gone over two strokes,
which is two putts, on two holes.

So, here's the first hole that
she went over two strokes.

First you have to get the ball
through one of these pipes,

then hopefully it lands near
the hole on the other side.

This one's all about luck,
which is why it's par five.

How many did Lexy take?

Five on the first two days
and six on the third.

Not that weird seeing it's all about luck.

-Where else does she go over two strokes?
-On the last hole.

We went to the last hole, where Lexy
had also needed more than two putts,

which was weird.

Wait, I don't understand. Is there
a trick to this one? It looks easy.

It is.

Par two.

So why did Lexy take four putts on Tuesday
four on Wednesday and five on Thursday?

-[Kyle] Yes!
-Oh, can I please have a go?

I think I can do this one.

I don't have the ball any more.
It's the last hole.

What do you mean?

You take your ball from hole to hole,

but they take it on the last turn so,
you can't take it home.

It disappears down here, see?

That's when Charlie ran up.

Lexy's here!

Have you found anything yet?
Is she cheating? What are we gonna do?

Charlie was super panicked,

and not in the mood
for waiting for answers,

which was good because we didn't
have any answers to give him.

-[camera shutter clicks]
-[Lexy] Thank you. Who's next?

Okay, don't push,
everyone can have a turn.

-[camera shutter clicks]
-[Lexy and Ally giggle]

Lexy had turned into
a mini golf celebrity.

Her friend Ally was super proud.

Oh, hey guys, are you
wanting a selfie with Lexy?

Oh, my goodness yes! Lexy is amazing.

Twenty for twenty in three days?
That is incredible!

I know, right, she's improved so much
in a few days, it's like a miracle.

Improved? What does that mean?

Like, to get better at something.

Since when?

I think it's meant that forever.

I mean, how long have
you and Lexy been coming here?

Um, Sunday was our first day.
Oh, Lexy, this girl was next.

[camera shutter clicks]

Suddenly Ava was having a photo with Lexy,

which was good,

because Maudie needed to tell Kyle
and me a crucial detail about the case.

Lexy was here on Sunday and Monday.

Really didn't see how that was crucial.

She won Twenty for Twenty on Tuesday.

But she was here on Sunday and Monday,

so, we might be able to work
out if and how she's cheating.

What?! How?

By watching the CCTV footage!

Okay, I see how that was crucial.

-Ava and I will look at the footage and...
-[Lexy] Okay, great.

I better hit that course!

Quick, you two run down in front of them
so you're playing the hole ahead.

Don't let them get around that course.
You have to stall.

How were we supposed to stall?

We had to think
of something to slow us down.

Which actually wasn't that hard.

While we stalled,

Maudie and Ava got Charlie to show
them the CCTV footage from Sunday.

It took a while to find Lexy and Ally,
but when they did, it was a shock.

She's terrible.

Like, Ezra terrible.
Don't tell him I said that Maudie.

Guess what Ava, she told me.

Lexy took nine putts to do that hole.

Two days later she did it in two.

No one can improve that quickly.

The time code says eleven-ten.

Charlie, when did you put up the
sign advertising the Twenty for Twenty?

Maybe eleven thirty?

She must have seen it afterwards but that
doesn't explain how she's scamming me.

No, but looking at Monday's footage might.

Monday's footage was even more
of a shock than the day before.

Okay, why is she wearing
a bag on her shoulder?

It's a cute look but it's
making it twice as hard.

That's why.

What is it?!
What did she put in there?!

I can't see...

Maudie, what is she doing?!

Wait, Kyle said the ball made
a clink sound when it hit the hole,

It must be something metal.

I think I know what it is. Come on!

Ava and Charlie raced after Maudie,

to where Kyle and I were up to the hole
with the really tricky hill and the pipes.

Okay Ezra, you've slowed them down.
Seventeen putts is enough stalling.

I'm not stalling, Kyle!
I'm trying my hardest!

Oh.

Let Lexy onto this hole now.
We've found something.

All yours guys!

We went to the next hole,
but Maudie didn't.

She hid behind the tricky
hole with the pipes.

Ezra, give me your golf ball!

Tell me when Lexy's about to hit.

After a few putts, Lexy's golf ball
came through one of the pipes,

and landed on a little ledge.

[Ezra] Before it could
roll towards the hole,

Maudie picked it up
and replaced it with my golf ball.

None of us knew what was going on.

But we found out when
Lexy moved onto the next hole.

Oh, I am so excited to see this!

Didn't you get a hole in one
here for three straight days?

Let's see if I can do it again!

Lexy, what's happening?!

I don't know... I think there's
something's wrong with the ball.

What could be wrong with the ball?

Oh, you mean it doesn't have
a magnet in it like this one?

That's how Lexy had been cheating!

She'd made her own golf ball with
a super strong magnet inside it...

and hidden big round magnets
inside all the holes,

which is what the cameras
caught her doing.

Maudie said she realised something
was up with Lexy's golf ball,

when she saw the final hole.
She thought...

It was strange that Lexy
couldn't putt under four or five

when it's one of the simplest holes.

That's because it's also the hole
where the golf balls are returned...

so Lexy had to use the real mini golf ball

and not the one with
the magnet buried inside it.

I can't believe you were
cheating this whole time!

Someone was going to get the money.
I didn't think it was a big deal.

Are you kidding me?
I'm losing my job because of you!

Oh Charlie,
I'm sure you won't lose your job

after Lexy pays back the money she took

and explains to your boss
and her parents what she did.

Right Lexy?

Lexy could hardly say no.
She'd been caught red-handed on CCTV.

And by Maudie, which is even worse.

Lexy got in big trouble.

Charlie was super grateful
and so was his boss,

he gave us unlimited mini golf games
for the rest of the holidays.

It's been a nightmare.

I do have excellent hand eye coordination.

Just not with balls.

[upbeat instrumental rock music playing]

[voice over]
The Case of the Problematic Party.

If there's one thing that
gets people excited, it's...

Puppies. Rainbows.
Chocolate coated strawberries...

That's three things and Poppy do you
remember what we talked about?

Before Dad said you had
to play with me or after?

We talked about you not interrupting me
for once while I report this week's case.

-So, if there's...
-Okay I won't interrupt.

...one thing that gets people excited,

it's getting invited to a party which is
what happened on Wednesday at lunchtime.

"You have been invited to Toby's
laser tag and pizza birthday party!"

Ruby had been invited to
Toby's laser tag and pizza party.

And not just Ruby.

[excited chatter]

Everyone had been invited
to Toby's laser tag and pizza party.

-The whole class? That's so nice.
-That's what Ruby said.

Toby, that's so nice of you!

What?

You inviting me to your birthday party!

We're not even really good friends,
it's so generous of you!

-I love laser tag, Toby!
-And I love pizza!

This is going to be so awesome,
I can't wait!

Hey Diet, you got yours, wicked.

You invited the whole class?
But this morning you said...

That my laser tag pizza party
is going to be the best party ever!

That's definitely what I said!

Mario looked a bit confused.

Because he knew the best party
ever wouldn't have laser tag,

it would have pony rides
and a jumping castle.

That's not why he was confused.

Oh.

Anyway, then Diet said...

Can I be on your team, Toby?

Of course.

-Are you getting your lunchbox?
-[Toby] Um...

Actually... I don't feel well.
I have to go to sick bay.

Are you okay?

[Poppy] Poor Toby.

He must have got
overexcited about laser tag.

Remember that's what
happened to you, Ezra?

What? No.

When we went to our cousin Jack's
laser tag party, it was really fun.

Really fun.

We had big laser guns
and we ran around in the dark.

It was great.

And we had to roll around on the floor.

So awesome.

And Ezra got a bit sick in the tummy
because he loved it so much.

I really love laser tag.

-Maudie, I really hate laser tag.
-You do?

Of course, I do!

It's dark, there are big laser guns,
you roll around on the floor,

your pants get dirty...

Yeah that's very
outside your comfort zone.

I'm going to tell Toby that I'm going
on a fishing trip with your Dad

that day and I can't go to his party.

Ezra, last time we went on a fishing trip,
you complained the whole time!

It's an excuse!
So I don't hurt Toby's feelings!

Oh!

We went to find Toby in sick bay.

Bad news Toby,
I've got an emergency fishing trip.

Toby, are you okay?

-Yeah, I'm fine.
-You don't look fine.

Unless fine is code for really terrible.
In which case you do look fine.

Can I tell you guys something?

Is it there's not enough
room for me at your party

and you're really sorry but I can't come?

Yes.

How did you guess that?
Also, what did Toby mean?

I didn't invite you to my party, Ezra.

Yes! I mean, oh...

I didn't invite you, either Maudie, sorry.
I only invited five people.

Five people?

But now the whole class has got
invitations and I don't know how.

-So, all those invitations in our bags?
-I didn't put them there!

Please, you can't tell Diet
that he wasn't invited!

[Poppy] Diet wasn't invited?

-But Diet and Toby are best friends!
-I know.

So, it was weird that
he wasn't on the party list.

I wanted him to come, I really did,

but laser tag and pizza is super expensive

and my Dad said I could
only invite five friends and

my Mum said I can only invite the friends
who invited me to their parties,

and... Diet didn't have a party.

Trying to follow the rules about
party invitations was a bit tricky.

We needed to bring in a party expert.

I just want to say that I'm honoured
to be called a party expert.

I also want to say that I really need
to start planning my own birthday party.

Ava, your birthday is ten months away.

I know.
Hopefully I haven't left it too late.

So, Toby, your Mum thought it was
rude not to return the party invitations.

-Yes.
-Which meant Diet missed out?

-Yes.
-And you were allowed five friends?

-Yes.
-Who did you invite?

James, Mario, Justin, Archie and Kyle.

And were you planning lolly bags?

For Ava, it's a fine line between
investigating and party planning.

Did you make a lot of invitations
and have some left over?

No. I only printed five at home.

And this wasn't one of them?

Mine had some writing in red.

So the rest of ours must have been copied.
On a scanner or a printer or something.

Maybe Diet felt left out and copied
them so he could come too.

That's impossible. Diet didn't know.

I was only allowed to ask you guys,

so, you have to promise
to keep this a secret, okay?

-Okay, we won't tell anyone.
-[Max] Won't tell anyone what?

-Umm...
-Don't worry, I've got this.

We don't want to tell anyone
about our maths study club

that we're having this weekend.

We're just going to do a bunch of homework
then do laser tag and have pizza

and maybe sing happy birthday
to Toby and that's all.

-So Ruby and Max knew about your party?
-I guess so.

Do you think they copied
the invitations as a prank?

Well, they were the first to pull
them out of their bags before...

[Toby groans]

[Poppy] Poor Toby.

He wasn't overexcited,
he was over-worried.

That's why he had a sore tummy.

All his worried feelings were
swirling around inside him.

Exactly.

We were just about to tell
him that we would help him,

when his worried feelings got worse.

[Diet] Hey Toby.

-Are you okay?
-He's fine, Diet.

He just ate something funny for breakfast.

Maybe milk past its use-by date,
isn't that right, Toby?

Wait, I thought Toby felt sick
because he was worried.

He did.
But we couldn't tell Diet that because...

Oh, then he would know that
Toby didn't invite him to his party!

We had to find out what had happened
before Diet got any more excited

and Toby got any more worried,

so, I came up with an excuse
to leave the sick bay.

Well, Maudie and I have to go take a call

from the Prime Minister who
wants to hire us for security.

I have to work on my excuses.

Ezra meant to say that
we're going to go play.

I can stay with you, Toby.

And I'll stay too!

I did a First Aid course in the holidays
so, I'm actually qualified.

Ava stayed so Diet didn't find
out about the invitation mix up,

and Maudie and I went to find
out how they got mixed up.

Did you ask Ruby and Max
if they'd copied the invitations?

We wanted to, but first we had
to figure out how they'd copied them.

So, there's the printer in the classroom,
the scanner in the library,

the photocopiers in the
corridor and the office.

Ruby used the photocopier this morning!

I'm going to photocopy
this page for my project.

Miss Tan gets mad if you stick
pages of writing in your work.

Well, my hand gets mad if I make
it write out too many words.

Ruby had overheard Toby
talking about his party,

and she had used the photocopier.

She was our prime suspect.

I didn't use the photocopier.

She was not our prime suspect.

But you went out to copy
the page from your book.

But when I got there, Mr McGillick was
copying the newsletters because...

The office photocopier is jammed again.

Will you be much longer?

Only another hour or so.

So, I didn't photocopy anything.

So now we knew that Ruby
didn't copy the invitations,

and that whoever did copy them couldn't
have used either of the photocopiers.

Which left the scanner in the library
and the printer in the classroom.

What was Ava doing with Toby?

How does that feel, Toby?

Good, except there's nothing
wrong with my wrist.

Yes, but it's taken your
mind off your tummy!

You're right. I feel better.

That's good because we should think
of a name for our laser tag team.

We could be called 'Team Ultra'!

[Toby groans]

I feel worse.

Ava needed us to come
back with some answers.

Which meant we needed
to ask some questions.

Who used the classroom
printer this morning?

Max!! Max used the classroom printer!

I remember, because she
was waiting for Ava to finish.

And this one is me looking surprised.

And this is me looking
like I have a secret.

Ooh! This one was taken right when
Miss Tan told me to stop taking selfies.

Max had overheard Toby talking about
his party, and she had used the printer!

Well, we thought she had used the printer.

-The printer was out of ink.
-Out of ink?

Yeah. Ava had printed so many selfies
that by the time I printed my short story,

it was coming out all stripy.

-Ava! You used all the ink!
-Oops.

So Max couldn't have
copied the invitations either.

But Max and Ruby are the only
people that Kyle told. Ooh, unless...

Exactly.

Unless Kyle accidentally
told someone else.

Did you tell anyone
else about Toby's party?

I am very offended by that, Maudie!

No, I didn't,
I wouldn't betray Toby like that,

and also have you seen my
invitation to Toby's party?

I lost it this morning.

You can always count on not
being able to count on Kyle.

Well that explains how someone
found an invitation to copy.

And it explains how anyone could
have found out about the party.

So how do we figure out who did it?

And then Maudie said
something really smart.

You weren't there.

But at this part of the story Maudie
always says something really smart.

Not always.

So, then Maudie said
something really smart.

Maybe we need to think about
why someone would do this.

Maybe it wasn't a prank.

Maybe someone really
wanted to go to Toby's party.

But who would do that?

I knew it was Diet all along.

Really?

Of course not, Ezra. Have you
even met me? I just say things.

We know why Diet might have copied
the invitations but we don't how.

But Diet wouldn't do that to Toby Ezra!
He's his friend!

Ava thought that too.

Diet wouldn't do that to Toby.

He's been such a
good friend all lunchtime.

[Ava] He played
rock paper scissors with us.

"Ooh! Said Stuart the Badger."

[Ava] And he read from his library
book that he just got today.

And he played charades...
even though he didn't know how to play.

Wait... what was that?

I don't know. I think it was meant
to be a movie but it went on forever.

No, before that.

Um... Diet read from his library book?

Diet went to the library!

He used the scanner in the library!

Ava was mad.

You made copies of Toby's
invitations in the library?!

-What?! Diet, is that... really?
-Um...

Yeah.

Why would you do that?

Because I found one of
your invitations at snack time...

on the playground near the library.

Oh! That's where I was at snack time too!

[Kyle] I was doing Karate with James
and we were really going for it.

Oh... I realize what happened now.

Yeah... And I hadn't gotten one so...

I knew that you hadn't invited me.

Because I was only allowed five people!

I know!

I mean I know that sometimes happens
so, I thought if you invited everyone

accidentally then your
Mum and Dad couldn't say no.

So...

I went into the library...

and made copies on the
scanner for the whole class.

So no one would miss out.

Are you mad at me?

Yes, I am!

I was talking to Toby.

Oh. Still, I'm super mad.
You made Toby have a tummy ache!

He was so worried
about hurting your feelings.

-And getting in trouble at home.
-He got sick.

I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to make you feel sick.

I'm sorry I couldn't invite you,

but laser tag is expensive
and my Mum has all these rules.

And sometimes you have to miss out.
You can't be invited to everything!

And I think we all
learned something today.

Empty your pockets before you do karate.

Diet felt really bad and told the
whole class what he had done,

and that they weren't really invited.

That was brave of him.

Yeah it was. Because people were mad,
especially Toby's parents.

Toby's parents found out?

Miss Tan rang them because
Toby was in sick bay,

so, he had to tell them what had happened.

Obviously, they were cross with Diet.

I know he did a selfish thing
but I feel sorry for Diet.

You don't have to any more though.

What do you mean?

When Toby's Mum and Dad saw
that it actually made Toby feel sick

to not invite his friend and to
have to keep a secret about it,

they thought maybe they'd made a mistake.

So, they asked Diet to come too.

Oh yay!

Yeah. Maybe it was the
best party ever after all.

No, this is the best party ever.

With pony rides and a jumping castle!

[upbeat instrumental rock music playing]
