The Guilty (2013): Season 1, Episode 2 - Episode #1.2 - full transcript

Maggie goes to Germany to see Nina, who had a break-down following the events. Nina explains that she told Singer, a detective in the murder case, that Byrne wanted her to help him steal and use the Reids' credit cards and she had refused. Singer had then bullied her into helping him frame Byrne. As a result Byrne killed himself but this was before Callum was buried so he is ruled out of the new investigation. Claire discovers that the blanket in which Callum's body was wrapped came from her house and Maggie brings Daniel in for questioning. He admits that he lied about his whereabouts on the night of the disappearance as he was with Teresa, with whom he was planning to run away. Maggie is annoyed to be called to the school about Sam's introverted conduct and perturbed when he mentions a man to whom he speaks. At the same time the Reids are stalked by Tom Rose, who once did some work for them and who later confesses to Maggie that he killed Callum.

Ooh! Oh...

Touch her again, Joe...
Take the boys home.

I looked. She's always in the house.

Callum! Callum!

Come on now! Callum!
He's not there.

'You've reached
the Find Callum Campaign line.'

He'll be nine now.

Someone somewhere knows where
Callum is. We need to bring him home.

What do you think? The age is right.
I'm so sorry.

Anderton's mistakes
cast a long shadow.

Just remember,
this is your case.

Jason Byrne killed himself
in September,

two months before. That rules
him out. Unless he had help.

You can be seen from most of the
houses. The bushes give you cover,

and if they did it at night...

You'd still know
if someone had been digging.

It's a shared garden.

Might have thought it was one of
the others digging a flower bed.

In the dark?

'Luke...'

Luke...

Come on.

Claire?

Claire, the police are here.

So it was Frank Lawson's idea
to plant the tree?

Yeah. But, um,

we were all there. It's not like
he was hiding anything.

No, sure, but if you can go back to
the following days,

maybe you saw something that didn't
register at the time,

someone in the garden
who shouldn't have been.

You mean, a stranger?

Anything out of the ordinary.

We planted a tree in November.

Yeah. He'd been gone six months.

Why move him after six months,
bring him back here?

I don't know.

You don't think it was a stranger?

We went through all this before.

First it was Jason Byrne,
then someone on the street.

They wasted months looking
in all the wrong places.

And now we know it wasn't Jason.
It seems unlikely.

So it must be one of us.

Have you tracked down
the other neighbours? Yeah.

Joe Wightman's got a property
development company in Montenegro.

What about his wife? Ex-wife.
Teresa Morgan. They're divorced.

She's a recruitment consultant
in London.

She wasn't at the tree planting
but she'll give another statement.

Any luck with the au pair?
No, we're still looking.

The family moved back to
Germany. She'd have been long gone

by the time they planted the tree.

She was still the last one
to see Callum alive.

You OK to carry on with Lenny?

Er, yeah, sure.

Do you still want that
presentation later?

As soon as I get back.

Obviously,
it's very early days, but...

We've noticed Sam doesn't really
interact with the other children.

He's still getting to know them.
Of course. It is a big change,

the last thing we want to do
is alarm you,

but while Sam was doing
his settling-in sessions

I started to pick up
lack of eye contact

and also his speech... There's
nothing wrong with his speech.

Oh, no, he's very articulate,
but there isn't much interaction.

He doesn't really have conversations.

He's four years old.

Does Sam seem to be very affected
by noise at home?

In what way? When things get too
loud he stands with his eyes closed

and his hands over his ears.
He's just messing about.

It's a thing he does.

We'll need to speak to your wife
at some point.

Not right now.

Anyhow, I'm the only one
that takes care of the garden.

So, you'd think you'd notice someone
digging out there?

I know there was nothing there
when we planted the tree.

What about after?

I also had a stroke a week later.

I wasn't thinking about
anything else.

Most people moved away
as soon as they could.

Claire was a good friend
when I needed one

and seeing what
she was going through...

My son's older than hers,
but still...

I couldn't have moved

and she's always said
they understood, but...

I always thought if I'd realised
sooner about Jason Byrne...

You aren't the only one. I know, but
if I'd asked him what he was doing

then perhaps things
could be different.

Is that your son now? No.

Felix is on his gap year
in Australia. That's Martin.

You all right?

My fiance. Oh.

Has she gone back to bed?

Yeah, just for a bit.

Hey.

Come here.

You understand it was
an accident, yeah?

Yeah.

Someone got scared and...

they tried to hide what happened.

That's all.

It's just really sad.

Come here.

Fucking ridiculous.

Some 19-year-old who doesn't even
know him telling us...

He's one of the brightest kids
I know, he's...

He's funny and loving and... I know.

And there is now way... I know.

It's ridiculous.

And she had a bloody moustache.

There he is.

He's still a missing person.
A uniform just found his scooter

dumped in a bush three streets away.

Has anyone told the parents?
Not yet.

So I'm afraid that
because it's been abandoned,

we need to start considering
other possibilities.

What do you mean?

This is absolutely
the worst-case scenario,

but there is a chance someone
may have taken him. Oh, my God!

Sorry.

It's the third time
it's done that today.

I'll take a look at it. Take it to
the garage. Let me look at it first.

Come on, Sam.

See you later, sweetheart.

OK. So,

at 10.45pm, most of the residents
were still at the barbecue,

the kids were at No 40
watching a movie

which meant Callum
was never by himself.

No-one remembered
seeing anyone suspicious.

Of course, they were all rat-arsed.

At 10.50, Nina Huber,
that's the Reids' nanny,

went back to the house... Where
she did or didn't meet Jason Byrne,

depending on which statement
you believe.

According to her final statement,
he was there

but he left before
the boys got back.

But Ruth Hyde and a dog walker saw
a man fitting Byrne's description

in a Burgundy sweatshirt leaving
Arcadian Gardens at 12.15.

Thank you. Anyway, after Nina left,

Joe Wightman got into a fight with
another neighbour, Sean O'Donnell,

apparently concerning Teresa Morgan.
"You been looking at my wife?"

Daniel Reid stepped in
to separate them

then he and his wife
got into a little spat,

apparently about not
wanting to leave the party yet

so Daniel took Callum and Luke home
at around 11.30pm,

after which he went for a drive
to clear his head.

He was picked up on several
traffic cameras,

came home at around 5am.

When did he drive to, Sunderland?

If you'd read his statement,
which you should have,

he said he realised he was over the
limit, pulled over and had a kip.

When he came back,
he didn't bolt the door.

He doesn't remember. He heard Luke
having a bad dream,

went in to settle him down,
fell asleep.

Nina looked in,
saw Daniel was with Luke,

so she checked on Callum
and went back to bed.

Don't forget... the text message.

If you'd let me finish...
The boyfriend sent a text message

saying, "Don't forget." She said it
came while she was with Callum.

And this was just after 5am?

Yeah. Yes.

The last time Callum was seen alive.

According to Nina Huber.

Thank you.

Have we found her yet? I've traced
her to an address near Dusseldorf

in 2009, then it's like her
and her mum disappeared.

Hardly surprising, considering
the way the press went after her.

Naughty Nina, the S&M au pair.

Off shagging her boyfriend when she
should've been looking after Callum.

They had a field day.

She actually said that?

They think it was someone on
the close? Not in so many words.

But you can see her point. If it was
a stranger, it doesn't make sense.

Have they ruled Jason Byrne out?
He could've had an accomplice,

someone who was still around.
Why risk bringing him back here,

unless... unless it was
some kind of sick thrill.

They wanted to watch us suffer,
knowing she was there... Stop.

Please, just stop. You've been doing
the same thing for five years.

This is... This is different.

Now we know. Yeah, now we know

and now we have to find a way
to live with it.

How can we? I don't know,
but we have to try.

We have another son who needs us.
You have another son.

I didn't mean that.

You know I don't mean that.

I just...

How can you not want to know?

'After a week of heated debate,

tomorrow will see MPs vote
on the issue for the first time.

In other news, local police
have confirmed

the body found in communal gardens
in Addlesham

is that of Callum Reid.

A friend speaking on behalf
of the Reid family described...'

James sits next to you, yeah?
Yeah.

Is he nice?

He's OK. Perhaps we could ask
his mum if he'd come

and play after school one day?

Yeah, maybe.

Ma'am, they've traced the yarn
from one of the blankets.

It's a standard blue baby blanket.

Been on sale since 2000
in about a dozen chains.

They found traces of Portland cement
used in the mixing of concrete.

Reid's an architect. And the
Wightmans were having building work.

Byrne worked part-time
in a builder's

supply yard so on and so on.

Gives us nothing. I can talk
to the parents,

see if the blanket rings any bells.
No, I'll talk to them.

Think about it. They've got
the big car, the big house.

They won't even notice.

All I need is his pin. Or hers.

They'll think it's online fraud
or hackers.

But what if they found out?
They won't.

Trust me.

Morning, Luke. It's a lovely day.
Hello.

Hope it stays like this
for the barbecue.

Don't want soggy sausages, do we?

Hey, Nina. Morning.
Callum still asleep?

Daniel?! Daniel, he's gone again!

Callum! Daniel, Callum's gone!

Callum! Callum!

Callum. We were so scared, baby.

'Callum... Callum... Callum...

Used to sit here all the time
and talk to him.'

Tell him, we'd never stop
looking for him,

that we'd find him
and bring him home.

I'm sure I'd know.

You're supposed to know, aren't you?

What was it you wanted?
We identified the blanket

Callum was wrapped in.
It was a blue cotton baby blanket

with a satin edge.

Unfortunately,
it's a very common design.

We had one like that when he
was a baby. Do you still have it?

Yeah.

Yeah, I think so.

Somewhere.

Perhaps you could check.

Hello?

'We've found her.'
Where is she?

'In a town called
Schwerin in Germany.' Right.

Where's the nearest airport?
'Hamburg but Frankfurt's close too.'

That's fine, if you can
just book me a ticket.

'I'll book for the morning.'
Yeah.

'As early as possible?'
Great. Thanks.

How about school next week, yeah?

OK.

Everything back to normal.

'Hi, Daniel, it's Teresa, I just...
I wanted to say I'm thinking of you

and um, I'm so sorry.'

'It's Mum.

I'm assuming I'm still invited
tonight

only I haven't heard from you.

I was hoping to hear how Sam
got on at school,

but, anyway...'

Eat up nicely or you won't have any
ice cream. I don't want any. Sam...

I hope you're a polite boy
when you're at school.

I'm going to talk to man
about what I like doing.

What man's this?

Three bits of pasta
and then you can go and play.

Oh, love, I am sorry.
There's nothing to be sorry about.

They'll say he's fine,
that'll be the end of it.

We'll take that bridge
when we come to it.

There's nothing wrong with him.

I know, but he has
his little ways, doesn't he?

And you remember your Uncle Robert.

He got depressed
after he lost his job.

Still, if there's
a family history...

I'm going to pack.

What are you doing?
Not now, Luke, OK? Not now.

Have you seen my passport?

Not lately.

You want to talk about it? The
nanny's in a place called Shwerrin

or somewhere. I'm on a flight
to Hamburg.

You have to go?
You can't send someone else?

Just asking.
I know what you're saying.

This is my job, I can't stop
working. I'm not asking you to.

Well, that's good,
given the size of our mortgage.

Maybe we need
to rethink things a little,

get Sam some extra help.
He doesn't need extra help.

You think he does?
No, it's just... What?

It's things I pick up on.

You probably don't see it so much.

Because I'm never here, I'm such
a crap mother, I don't know my son.

You know as well as I do he's always
been a bit different.

When did that become a bad thing?
Someone who's known him five minutes

goes on about developmental problems
because he doesn't tick some box.

You're ready to believe anything. I
can't talk to you like this. Don't.

'This is the last call for passengers
on flight 784 to Hamburg.

Now boarding at gate 21.'

It's not there.
We probably gave it away.

I know, I know, we didn't.

How about all that stuff we gave
to Helen when she had Max?

There were blankets
in one of those bags.

Not the blue one. I wouldn't give her
that. We brought Callum home in it.

Then you probably
put it away somewhere. No.

No, I kept it in his drawer.
I know that I did.

We're going to have to tell them.
Just call down, OK?

If you start telling them things,
you're going to confuse everything.

Daniel, it was Callum's blanket.

It was in his drawer
and someone took it.

Do you hear what I am saying to you?

It was in his drawer and someone
came into the house and took it.

Just wait here for a minute.

You're sure? I kept everything where
it was. The blanket's not there.

I tried to call DCI Brand.
I got a message in German.

Yeah, she's out of the country
at the moment.

In Germany.

I'm sorry, I can't say.

Nina Huber? Is she a suspect again?

Mrs Reid... She was in
Callum's room all the time.

She could've easily
taken the blanket.

She's being interviewed
as a witness. That's all.

You think that she knows something.

I'll pass this on to DCI Brand,
um, I'm sure she'll be in touch.

She's still in a very fragile state,
so please keep it brief.

Frau Huber?

Come on, just think,
it's not difficult.

Jason, please.

What's her date of birth?

I don't know. Kids, then?

I don't know. What's
their birthdays? I don't know.

Well, you're a shit nanny.

Please, Jason, they will come home.

My daughter has been in hell,
now at last she smiles again.

After five years. Do you know what
we had to do to make that happen?

Mrs Huber, I know Nina's had
a very hard time.

We can talk.

Jason wanted money
from their account.

And you helped him? He took cash
from the drawer,

but that was all.

You said he left the house
before the boys came home.

Nina...

I told a detective
about the money.

He said I would go to prison,

but if I said Jason took Callum
then I could go home.

But you didn't tell him that? No,

because Jason didn't do it.

But the detective
wouldn't believe me.

So what did you do?

Nina...

Nina!

The party's over?

'Please. I said he left before
they came home. He didn't? No.'

We waited until Claire was asleep.

And then you saw Jason leave?

Yes. He wanted to take
Daniel's car keys.

I stopped him because
they would know,

and then he left. Nina,

early the next morning
Jason sent you a text

saying, "Don't forget."
What did he mean?

He liked to tell me what to wear

under my clothes.

So he texted you at 5am
to remind you? Yes.

When you were in the room
with Callum? Yes.

So, you see, it couldn't
have been Jason.

It didn't wake Callum? What?
No, but I was by the door.

You didn't go into the room?

No. I was the other way.

But you could see him? Yes. I could
see the shape of him under the duvet.

He always slept like that.

Could you see his face? No.

But you could hear him breathing?
Yes, of course.

Nina,

I'm going to give you my card.

If you remember anything else,
please call me, OK?

OK.

Thank you. I'd better go.

If it was Nina...

What?

Why would she take that blanket?

Why not take one
from the top of the pile?

Maybe she thought it wouldn't be
missed? I don't know.

I'm still not even sure
it's the same one.

That's why I didn't want to go
rushing down there... I know.

You'd rather do nothing, pretend
none of this is happening.

For God's sake. It's true.

If we'd had it your way, we'd have
given up the day Callum went missing.

It's like you wanted
to believe the worst.

Turned out I was right.
As long as you were right,

well, that's the important thing.

I hate this.
Why do you always do this?

What? Pretend like
you're the only one who cares.

I lost him, too, you know?

So why do I always feel like
I'm on my own?

'Go on, speak to Mum,
speak to Mummy.'

'Hello, Mummy, I had
mashed potatoes for tea.

I didn't eat the lumps.

And I played football with Jamie
at break time.'

'Hey, love. Hope it's all going OK.

A date's come through
for Sam's appointment,

but we'll talk about it
when you get home.

Um, OK, love you.'

Nina?

What is it? I wanted
to say about the wellies.

I'm sorry? Callum's red wellies.

He always wore them. He wouldn't
have gone out without them.

I saw them in the kitchen. When? In
the morning when we were searching.

They said they were gone.

There's nothing about this
in your statement.

Did you tell anyone at the time?

I told the detective.
He said I was lying.

OK.

You'd know if you'd given it away.
Of course.

That's what I told him.

For God's sake.

What is it?

He's staring straight in here.

Who?

Tom someone. He did some work for us.

I'll get rid of him. Thank you.

Can you just go away? I'm sorry.

Wellington boots?
Callum wore them all the time.

If he went out on his scooter,
he'd have been wearing them.

Nina Huber says they were still
in the kitchen.

It suddenly came back to her?
She was a liar

BEFORE they carted her off
to the nuthouse.

Talk to everyone else in that house,
see if anyone remembers seeing them.

Ron, can I talk to you?

She didn't go into the room.
She was in the doorway.

All she saw was a shape under the
duvet. May not have even been him.

He might have already been dead.
She changed her story

every five minutes. All she cared
about was protecting Byrne.

You based the time of Callum's
disappearance on her statement.

That's why you ruled out
the parents.

Anderton had already been ruled out.

Stop telling me about Anderton.
You were there. Yes, I was there

while you were off having babies
so you can

swan back in smelling of roses.
I was here,

up to my eyes in this shit.

You made assumptions
with your crucial evidence.

Byrne killed himself, The logical
conclusion was and is he did that

because he knew we were on to him.
Bollocks.

He killed himself because he and his
family were persecuted by the press

after someone leaked
his interview transcripts.

Like I said at the time,
I knew nothing about that.

Right.

We done?

Hi, love.

Yeah. No, she couldn't.

No. I know.

How many cars did the Reids have?

Just the one. Claire doesn't drive.

Daniel said he took the boys home
then went out in his car.

Yes, ma'am. So why were his car keys
still on the table at 12.15am?

Maybe it was a spare set. Maybe.

Let's bring him in.

If you only want to clarify a few
things, why can't we do it here?

It's easier at the station. Dad.
It's OK.

I want to come with you.
No, no, stay with Claire.

I'll be back soon.

The night Callum went missing
you said you were out driving,

from just after 11.30
till just before 5am, is that right?

That's right.

Do you often drive around all night?

Er, Claire and I
were having problems.

We'd had a row at the party.

Best to get away for a while.

What was the row about?

I didn't like it when she drank.

She didn't like it
when I told her what to do.

Like I said,
we were having problems.

You, er, also got into a fight
with a neighbour at the barbecue?

No, I broke up a fight.

Joe Wightman started getting
violent. But the way you responded

was violent. Is that how
you usually react?

No.

What about with your boys?

No.

Never lose your temper? No, never.

Not like that.

So, er, you dropped
Luke and Callum off,

got straight in your car
and drove away?

Yeah. So why were your car keys
still on the kitchen table?

At 12.15am, Jason Byrne
picked up your keys

from the kitchen table.

What are you talking about?

He was going to take your car,
but Nina Huber stopped him.

Byrne was in the house
all that time?

The question is where were you?

This is...

I don't believe this. You were
worked up, the kids played up...

No, no. stop, stop. Just stop, OK?

There is CCTV of me in my car.

When I came to the house
Callum was asleep in his bed.

Nina saw him. She may not have
seen him when she said she did.

Your car wasn't on camera till 3.35,
so where were you for four hours?

I've told you.

I don't think you have.

I've spoken to your solicitor.
He's on his way over there.

Why take him in?
We've given new statements.

New evidence? It's got to be
something Nina said.

If so, why won't they talk to both
of us? And why would they take...

They can't... Listen to me,

do you really believe Daniel
would be capable

of doing something to hurt Callum?

Do you?

No.

No. No, God, no, of course not.

Oh, Luke.

Everything's going to be
all right, you know.

They're just asking a few questions
then he'll be home. Come here.

I can't leave them?
But you won't be leaving them,

you'll be leaving Claire.

You can't stay with someone
you don't love.

I should get back.
You don't have to.

I'll drive you

then I'll wait half an hour.
Teresa... I'll wait half an hour

in case you change your mind.

I was with Teresa Morgan.

Why not say that?

Because the night
my son disappeared,

I was contemplating leaving my wife.

For Teresa Morgan?

Yes.

I went to see if she was OK. We
drove somewhere so we could talk.

When did you get back?

About 12.45.
Then you went out again?

I was a mess, I couldn't let Claire
see me like that,

so... I got in my car and...

And... so, you lied

to the people who were
trying to find your son.

We'd just lost Callum.

If Claire had known I was
about to leave her, too...

Ma'am.

She doesn't look happy.
No, she does not.

So, anything? No, there was no CCTV
on Horsham Street.

They wouldn't have passed cameras

between there and Arcadian Gardens.

So the dad was serving
the neighbour?

No-one picked up on that?
Apparently not.

You got it all wrong, didn't you?

We're letting him go.

Let me ring my mum, yeah?

I can't let you do that. No.

She'll be worried.

Let's go.

See you later.

Have you seen the paper
today, Jason?

Seen what they did to
your mum's house? Not nice, is it?

Sounds like they gave her
quite a scare.

You got them on it.

It's nothing to do with us,

but that's how
it's going to be from now on.

As long as you keep saying
you didn't do it.

I didn't do it.

Come on, come on, come on.

Please, I just want to...

Ah...

Don't move. If you run,
I'll fucking shoot you.

On your feet. I just want to...
Shut up, keep walking.

Please, I just want to talk to you.
My name's Tom Rose and I need...

I want to confess.

To what? I'm sorry, it was me.

I killed Callum Reid.
