The Glades (2010–2013): Season 4, Episode 1 - Yankee Dan - full transcript

In the season four premiere episode of "The Glades," Longworth must delve into a 150-year-old ghost story to solve a murder when the dead body of an heiress is found in a haunted plantation house.

[ Man singing in Spanish ]

[ Music continues ]

[ Chuckles ]

Man: Baby, you keep doing that...

And what?

I'll get my way?

[ Tires screech ]

[ Screams ]

[ Thunder crashes ]

What the hell, lady? Are you all right?

Help me...

Please.

[ Thunder crashes ]

[ Thunder crashes ]

[ Screams ]

Geez, lady. What the hell?

Why didn't you call 911?

[ Thunder crashes ]

How the hell do I know where he is?

His flight from Atlanta
got in over an hour ago.

Maybe he took a later flight.

Not according to the airline.

[ Scoffs ]
With the night he's had,

he's probably badged his way
into an airport lounge

and is holding a bartender hostage.

Well, he needs to shake it off,
and you need to find him

and bring both your asses
back here A.S.A.P.

This one's... pretty gruesome.

How gruesome?

Well, let me put it to you this way.

You ever heard me use that word before?

I'll try his cell again.

[ Grunts ]

You scared the crap out of me.

Uh, looking for this?

What the hell are you so happy about?

Callie said no.

I didn't say she said no.

What I said was she said
she had to think about it.

[ Chuckling ]
Oh, yeah.

I had a girlfriend in college

who said she had to think about it.

That girlfriend wasn't Marisol.

I just caught her off-guard.

No, she'll come around.
Trust me. I know my girl.

The victim's name is Chelsea Baker.

Her purse was in her car outside.

The address on her driver's license

has her living in Aventura.

Daniel's checking into the next of kin.

E... everything all right?

Yeah! Great.

[ Police radio chatter ]

Liver temp puts time of death
at approximately 11:00 P.M.

And it's safe to assume

that the axe in her back
is what killed her?

Barring any surprises.

What do you think? Home invasion?

Except it wasn't her home,

and the kitchen's the only room
that's been turned upside-down.

You know of anyone that
keeps valuables in the kitchen?

Man: I swear, one second,
she was right there next to us,

and the next, she was just gone,
vanished into thin air.

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

- Daniel?
- Yeah?

Everything okay?

You know where we are, don't you?

Yeah... my crime scene.

This is the infamous Cooley plantation.

Infamous good or infamous bad?

In 1861, the owner,
Dan Cooley, was murdered...

killed by an axe to the back.

Huh.

Hey. Uh, I'm detective Longworth.

Can you describe
this, uh, vanishing woman?

She was slender
with long, wavy jet-black hair

and pale skin.

Jim: Okay.

That's her. That's the woman
who brought us here.

Daniel: That's Martha Cooley,

and she's been dead for over 150 years.

Huh.

Well, it looks like
we have our first suspect.

The Glades 4x01 - Yankee Dan
Original air date May 27, 2013

- Hey, you. Where have you been?
- Hey.

I've been looking all over for you.
[ Sighs ]

I tried to steal like 20 minutes
in the doctors' lounge.

I got zero sleep last night.

I bet you didn't.

Oh.

Oh, no.

I mean, I didn't say no,

but I also didn't say yes.

I wish it was as simple
as just saying yes, you know?

But the long-distance thing
wasn't working for Jim.

He was very honest about that,

and it wasn't working for me, either,

and it's not like
I just have one more year

until I finish school.

I mean, God knows
where I'm going to end up

after I graduate.

I could have to move
to New York or L.A. or Boston,

which would be great,

except for what does that do
for me and Jim?

And you have to be in the same place

in order to make it work.

I'm not crazy to think that, right?

And I don't want
one of those engagements

in which it just goes on and on forever

and no one sets an actual date,
and it just dies.

I'm sorry.

No. Hey, believe me, I get it.

It didn't work for Jason and me.

It's a big decision, Callie.

I honestly can't think of a bigger one.

Trying to decide between career
and the man you love?

Yeah, and I feel like
by committing to one,

I'll have to give up on the other.

The victim, Chelsea Baker,

recently became the owner
of the Cooley plantation.

Her grandmother lived there

until she passed away two months ago.

Chelsea had power of attorney
over her estate.

Oh. Good way to avoid estate taxes.

Not to mention taxes on capital gains.

The plantation's been in the family

for over 200 years.

Chelsea was Dan and Martha Cooley's

great-great-granddaughter.

I talked to my friend
at the Hall of Records.

He pulled up Yankee Dan's
death certificate.

And this has what to do
with my murder today?

Probably nothing,
but I couldn't help myself.

It turns out, there was an
eyewitness to Yankee Dan's murder.

His neighbor and fellow
plantation owner Gavin Brown

reported that Yankee Dan
was killed by one of his slaves,

and cause of death was listed
as excessive blood loss

due to a severed spinal cord.

Sounds like an axe to the back to me.

It does make me wonder

why Martha's the one haunting the house,

when it was her husband
who was murdered.

Well, that's easy.
She died of a broken heart.

- I don't think a broken heart's
an actual cause of death. - Yeah.

Have yours broken a few times
and get back to me with that.

What?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
She didn't say no, Daniel.

She just... you know,
she's thinking. She's...

Can we just get back
to what we were talking about?

Um, so, does Chelsea have
any relatives above ground,

like a husband, maybe?

Yes, Ryan Baker.

He's a local magazine publisher,
publishes beach drive magazine.

He's already been notified
of his wife's death.

Notified as in he didn't notice
his wife was missing all night,

or perhaps, for some reason,

he wasn't eager to bring it
to our attention?

I didn't notice
because I went to bed early.

As you can see,
I've been a little bit busy.

You didn't think it was strange,
your wife not coming home?

Chelsea's been
spending a lot of her time

packing everything up at the house.

Both of her parents are gone,

so we've been handling
everything ourselves.

She didn't like to drive
alligator alley at night,

so it wasn't unusual for her

to stay there if it got too late.

Oh.

That's got to work out well for you.

Excuse me?

Well, you knew she was out there alone.

You knew that she'd stay
if it got too late.

Why bother concocting an alibi, huh?

I didn't kill my wife, detective.

Oh, really?

Well, then, why am I here?

Can you please not touch that?

That's a Schneider Le Verre signed vase.

It's very expensive.

Oh.

Whoa!
[ Laughs ]

So, what... all these are,
uh, pricy antiques?

Mostly.

Chelsea and I
have been selling everything

in her grandmother's house on eBay.

Which became your wife's house
after her grandmother died,

which is now your house
now that your wife's dead.

I just lost the love
of my life, detective, okay?

Do you really think I care
about some damn house?

Plantation, actually...

about 100 acres
of prime Florida farmland,

and by the looks of it,

Chelsea wasn't that keen
on the place, either...

I mean, off-loading
her family heirlooms,

selling off her family's
storied history?

Chelsea was a pragmatist.
She didn't go in for sentiment.

Or maybe she did and stood in the way

of you making money off their heirlooms,

to say nothing of that homestead.

Now that your wife's dead,

you can just bulldoze that thing.

I mean, that's got to be tough, right...

selling a 200-year-old haunted house?

You've got it wrong.

Chelsea had no use

for her family's slave-owner history.

She was embarrassed by it.

As far as the house being haunted,

it wasn't true.

I've been in that house over 100 times,

and I've never heard or seen
anything even remotely unusual.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Huh.

Carlos,

what do you got for me?

Broken blood vessels in her eyes

and ligature marks around her neck,

both of which are consistent
with a manual choke hold.

So, she was strangled?

The injury to her spine occurred
after she was strangled.

Whoever killed her definitely
wanted to make sure she was dead.

The victim had completely bled out,

hence my wondering about this...
Chelsea's right hand.

For some reason, I found trace blood

on her right index finger

and nowhere else on her arm or hand.

Are you sure it's her blood?

It matches her blood type.

I'll have to run some DNA to confirm.

Oh, sounds like we missed something.

Come on. Still got time
to get out there before dark.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Get out where?

Back to our crime scene.

Back to the Cooley house?

- Yeah.
- No.

Wha... what do you mean, "no"?

I mean no.

- I can't.
- Why not?

Uh, Marisol and I

have dinner plans with, uh, my in-laws.

You hate your in-laws.

Now, all of a sudden,
you can't get out of it,

- not even for work?
- No, that's not true.

I love spending time
with Marisol's family.

They're... wonderful people.

Oh, okay.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you doing?

Oh, I'm just, uh, calling Marisol

to see if you're lying.

Aah! Come on. Let's go.

[ Sighs deeply ]

[ Electricity buzzes ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Electricity buzzes ]

[ Sighs ]
It's an old house...

faulty wiring.

[ Sighs ]

That drawer.

What about it?

It's the only one that's closed,

and it's right near
where Chelsea was lying.

Hmm.

Oh. Got something.

Looks like blood.

It's, uh...

Like, the start of writing
of some kind... like, a letter?

Like, maybe a "J" or a "T"?

As in, the victim dipped
their finger in their own blood

and tried to tell us something,
like who killed them?

[ Scoffs ] Too bad she didn't
finish before she died

so we could get the hell out of here.

Did you just feel that?

[ Sighs ]

Whatever it was, it seems to be gone.

Jim?

Jim.

Yo, Jim!

What are you doing?

Come on. Stop messing around.

[ Sighs ]

Geez!

[ Sighs ]

I think he likes you.

[ Thudding in distance ]

[ Thudding continues ]

[ Door hinges creak ]

[ Thudding continues ]

See? Always an explanation.

Are you okay?

Is this...

Yankee Dan,

yeah.

[ Creak ]

Don't shoot!

Please don't shoot!

Lucky for you, I can't.
Get out of there.

So, I guess I'm just gonna
have to settle

for taking you into custody.

Hands, please.

Is he all right?

[ Breathes deeply ]

He'll live.

Ed Ross...

adviser to the spirit world

and renowned paranormal psychologist.

I'm sure you must have heard of me.

You have "renowned"
on your business card,

if that's what you mean.

Uh, so, you want to tell me
about this stuff?

This "stuff," as you call it,
are all the tools of my trade...

paranormal-data recording
equipment, mostly.

As in recording images and voices

from beyond the grave?

Active spirits, detective...

restless souls whose stories
have yet to be told.

My profession is not a joke.

I hold a PHD from
the University of Edinburgh.

Yeah, that's still a joke.

I have made significant strides
in the last few years

amassing proof of its existence.

As in the Cooley place?

Which I'm sure,
after you tweak and enhance

all your paranormal-data recordings,

is just crawling with bogeymen...

as in your cash cow.

The Cooley home
has no bogeymen, detective,

just one very active soul...

the wife of the man
who was murdered there,

Martha Cooley...

the strongest paranormal
presence I've felt

in all my years of research.

No sense of Chelsea Baker,

who was murdered there last night?

I have no knowledge
of any such restless soul.

Perhaps she's moved on and is at peace.

Or perhaps your recording equipment

picked up something
you didn't want anyone to see,

as in you stripping Chelsea
of her restless soul,

so you snuck back into my crime scene

to steal it all back
before we could find it.

That's ridiculous.

I had no reason to kill Chelsea,

and my equipment was installed
with the family's full consent

and has been there for months.

I literally have hours of footage

that I've never seen myself.

Chelsea gave you permission

to hide cameras all over
her grandmother's house?

- Not Chelsea, her sister. She's the
one who hired me. - Her sister?

Their grandmother had seen
Martha on various occasions,

and she wanted to prove her Nana
was not suffering from dementia.

Because if she could
prove Martha existed,

then she could challenge
Chelsea's power of attorney.

Huh.

What'd you say her sister's name was?

I didn't, but it's Jackie.

Jackie with a "J"?

I can think of no other way to spell it.

You're welcome.

Ed Ross?

Renowned paranormal psychologist,

or so his card says.

I just confiscated his equipment
from the Cooley home.

I need you to go through it.

Hey, does that look like a "J" to you?

Yeah, it could be, which,
in doing a background check

on our victim, might stand for...

Jackie-with-a-"J" Cooley,
Chelsea's sister.

Now, what did you come up with?

Well, for one thing,

Jackie wasn't even mentioned
in their grandmother's will.

Chelsea got the entire estate.

So it's probably not a coincidence

that Jackie recently filed
for paperwork with the state

to acquire heritage landmark
status for the plantation.

Which would trump
Chelsea's power of attorney

and stop the house
from ever going on the market.

Hell hath no fury like a sister
burned out of millions.

I was home alone

the night my sister was murdered.

I went to bed around 9:00.

I had to get up at 4:30
to feed the chickens,

and, no...

I live alone,

so there isn't anybody
who can corroborate that.

Okay, well, uh, maybe you can tell me

if there was anyone other than you

that had a reason to hate your sister.

I didn't hate my sister.
Why on earth would you say that?

Well, you filed
for heritage landmark status.

You blocked the sale of a house

that she worked so hard
to steal from you

through power of attorney,

is why on earth I would say that.

So, I'm guessing that Chelsea

used your grandmother's ghost sightings

to prove that she was unfit
to take care of herself,

manipulated the courts
so she could control the estate,

then made a grab for the house
and everything in it,

so you hired "renowned"
ghost hunter Ed Ross

to make your case?

Just to prove to Chelsea
that my Nana wasn't insane.

Right, and prove that there was
paranormal activity in the house,

so that you could contest
your sister's power of attorney.

So, Chelsea found out, you two fought,

one thing led to another,

and she ends up dead
with an axe in her back.

Okay, look.

I loved my sister,

but she was a really unhappy person.

She was one of those people
that no matter what she had,

it just wasn't enough.

As opposed to you, who's willing
to let her have it all

while you continue to get up
at 4:30 every morning

- to feed the chickens?
- Yes.

I love my life, and I love this farm.

It's everything to me.

Yet you filed
for heritage landmark status.

Because I thought that
Chelsea was being impulsive

in selling our family's plantation.

I mean, our ancestors
are buried on that land.

I was just trying to buy enough time

to convince her to embrace our past,

but Chelsea was ashamed that
our family used to own slaves.

But you aren't?

I'm not proud of it,

but I'd be a hypocrite
to deny where we came from.

You know, my Nana always said

that the past was far more complicated

than we could ever possibly know.

She believed that Martha's
spirit is in that house,

and so do I, and I'm not
going to sell it

until I figure it out.

There's something
that she can't let go of.

[ Chickens clucking ]

Ed set up cameras

in rooms he believed
had the most activity.

This is from the night of the murder.

I can't imagine we're lucky enough

to see who she's talking to?

Sorry. Just one angle
set up in each room.

This static goes on
for almost six minutes.

Then, the creepy part.

That is creepy.

What was that light?

Best I can figure,

headlights from the couple
who found the body.

At least, it times out
with the time code

and when the couple said
Martha led them to the body.

So, our renowned ghost hunter Ed Ross

tampered with the footage?

I checked, and it's not a digital edit.

I'm thinking something
more in the moment,

like electromagnetic interference.

Caused by...

Interference...

Electromagnetically?

Like, from an angry spirit?

Here. Here we go.

That's the couple who found her...

which, I guess, makes that...

Martha.

Hello?

Martha?

Can you hear me?

I know you were here the night
of the murder, Martha.

Makes you my only eyewitness.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ]

If there's something
you want to show me...

Give me a sign?

Now we're getting somewhere.

[ Window thudding ]

Is this it, Martha?

Is this what you wanted me to see?

[ Breathes deeply ]

Whoa!

[ Gasps ]

[ Panting ]

Well, I'm gonna take that as a yes.

Hey, I was just about to call you.

I found an EVP recording

from a few days ago you need to hear.

Jim: EVP?

Electronic voice phenomenon.

Usually, it's some kind
of undecipherable noise

that's supposed to be a ghost,

but in this case,

Ed Ross picked up
a more earthly conversation.

Ryan: Can you blame me, huh,

you heartless, money-grubbing bitch?

Just shut up!

I'm gonna go with Ryan Baker,

and I'm guessing
he's arguing with Chelsea.

Shut up, Chelsea! I hate you.

I swear to God, I hate you.

I wish you were dead!

So much for "for better or worse."

Sounds like Ryan was ready

to skip right to the
"till death do us part" part.

I'd really love to know
what they were arguing about.

I can try and dig it out.
It should take about a day.

Also, I scanned the partial letter

we found at the bottom of the drawer.

It could be the start of the letter "R."

As in Ryan.

Uh, send this to my dropbox.

Oh, and have Manus
send a unit to pick him up.

You got it.

[ Sighs ]
Get that thing out of here.

Shut up, Chelsea! I hate you.

I swear to God, I hate you.

I wish you were dead!

[ Beep ]

Look, I know how that sounds.

Yeah, like you wish your wife was dead.

All married couples fight, detective.

They don't end up in murder.

No, but some of them do,

especially the ones that fight
about number two

on the all-time list
of biggest marital fights...

money.

And since Chelsea
was bleeding you of yours,

my money's on money.

No. No, that's ridiculous.

I would never kill my wife over money!

Really?

Even the way Chelsea
was going through it...

having your accounts frozen,

forcing you to sell off titles
from your publishing company?

Come on, Ryan.

You were just days away from bankruptcy.

Yeah.

Yeah, and we were trying
to figure it out.

We were selling off the family antiques,

getting the house ready
to put on the market.

Except her sister filed
for heritage landmark status,

which would have prevented a sale.

It's true Jackie was upset
about being cut out of the will,

but I guess I was hoping
that, given enough time,

I could convince Jackie

to retract her landmark status filing.

Well, I'm not exactly sure how
you were planning on doing that,

and even if you did,

Ed Ross had the proof that Jackie needed

to vacate your wife's power of attorney,

meaning that you had to move fast,

as in killing your wife

so the property
would become yours alone.

So, unless you can give me
an alibi that I might buy

for the night
that your wife was murdered,

this is the part where you tell me

you need to speak to a lawyer.

- I'd like to speak...
- Yeah, I got it.

[ Sighs ]

Jeff: Yeah, I mean,
I'm cool with Caldwell High.

I read online... it says they have

one of the best soccer coaching staffs

in the entire state of Georgia, so...

Really?

You don't mind just picking up
and leaving your friends?

Mom, it's not that big a deal.

Okay. I'm just, um, surprised, is all.

Why? What's up?

With me?

Nothing. Why?

I mean, I'm sorry it took me so long

to sort through all those packets

from the schools in Atlanta.

Schools in Atlanta?

- Jeff, where are you?
- Jim's work.

He's gonna hang out during
practice and drive me home.

Yeah.

That's really nice of him.

Yeah. Uh, you know what?

You can tell him yourself.

Wait, Jeff, n...

I'll be in the car.

Yeah.

Hey.

Hey.

How's it going?

Good.

How are you?

I'm, uh... I'm good.

You know, the... the thing
about Atlanta schools...

I gave him a packet like...
[chuckles] two months ago.

Oh. Oh, okay. I mean,

just as possibilities, you know...

Months ago.

Of course, he would...

pick today to start talking about it.

[ Chuckles ]
Right.

Um...

What... so you and he haven't, uh...

I didn't want to say anything to him

before you and I,
you know, talked again.

Right.

Well, uh, I mean, I should probably...

take Jeff to practice.

Yeah.

Okay.
[ Chuckles ]

Well, I love you.

Bye.

Okay. Uh, love you.

Bye.

[ Cellphone rings ]

[ Scoffs ]

Yeah. Carlos, what's going on?

What's up with you?

You sound like you've seen a ghost.

Ha ha, funny.

- What do you got?
- The lab results came back

on the blood from Chelsea's finger.

It's a match for her blood.

Also, the powdery substance

that we found on her clothing...

it's a combination
of brick dust and mold spores.

Well, she was packing up an old,
moldy house, so that's no help.

We already know she was there.

Daniel: This may help.

I went through
the Bakers' online account

like you asked me to.

Chelsea was tracking early
19th-century pocket watches,

but she wasn't selling any herself.

Well, how much are they worth?

Eh, some antique pocket watches

can go for as much as $100,000.

And you said there was brick mold

they found on her clothing?

Yeah, silica-based brick,

common at the time because
of its resistance to moisture,

but the Bakers were broke.

Why would they be looking
to buy such an expensive watch?

She wasn't looking to buy a watch.

She was looking to sell,

which means I think I know
what Chelsea was doing

right before she was murdered.

[ Cellphone beeps ]

Thank you.

[ Groans ]

[ Scoffs ]

I still don't know why
you needed a medical examiner.

Everybody in this crypt

has been dead for a long time, amigo.

Hmm.

It's definitely the same substance

we saw on the front
of Chelsea's clothes,

which puts her here, but why?

Well, Chelsea was having
a virtual fire sale

of all of her family's heirlooms.

Once she found out how much
her great-great-grandfather's

antique pocket watch was worth,

she was down here in a flash
to yank it off Yankee Dan.

That's grave robbing.

[ Blows ]

- Yankee Dan.
- Yeah?

Yeah.

This tomb has been partially disturbed.

Come on. Let's open it up.

Open it up?

Oh, come on. Relax, Daniel.

- It's already been partially disturbed.
- But...

We're just disturbing it
the rest of the way.

Doesn't that make us ghouls
after the fact?

[ Exhales, coughs ]

There. Watch is missing.

Carlos: And it was definitely
there until recently.

Look.

You can make out the imprint

where it's been sitting
for over a century.

Okay, so, Chelsea came down here

to steal her
great-great-grandfather's watch.

Someone caught her, killed her,

and then stole it for themselves,

which means whoever
has Yankee Dan's watch

killed Chelsea Baker.

Nope. Nope.

Yello.

You're welcome.

All right.

A warrant?

Or you could save everyone the trouble

and give me your
great-great-grandfather's

pocket watch,

and I can just arrest you for murder.

I'm sorry. What are you talking about?

Chelsea went into your family crypt

to steal Yankee Dan's pocket watch,

which you'd want back,

considering how interested you are

in your family's history.

Yeah, my sister did
a lot of messed-up things,

but she would never
do something that low.

And yet she did, and you caught her.

You probably realized

that Chelsea was never gonna give a damn

about the Cooley legacy.

I mean, grave robbing...
that's the last straw, right?

So, you choked her
in a fit of crazed rage,

and you stuck an axe in her back

as a statement in honor
of your family's heritage.

I would never do anything
that monstrous,

and... and over a watch
I didn't even know we had?

I mean, she took everything else...
[ Cellphone ringing ]

And your brilliant theory is
that I killed her over a watch?

Okay. Hold that
vaguely insulting denial.

Yeah. Daniel?

I scanned Ryan Baker's
online transactions

one more time.

About three weeks ago,
he sold two rare Tiffany lamps

for 25 grand apiece to a buyer in Maine.

50 grand for two lamps?

Usually, Ryan's sales go
right into his PayPal account,

but this time, he instructed the yer

to send the money
to a different account,

which I traced to Ed Ross,

but since it was Jackie who hired him,

I can't figure out
what the money was for.

Well, if I was to make a guess,

it would be to get rid of the woman

that was putting Ryan Baker
in the poorhouse.

Sounds like we need
to send some deputies

to scare up our ghost hunter.

Okay.

Well, for the moment,

I kind of, sort of half-believe you,

but I'm still leaving my search team.

[ Knock on door ]

- Hey.
Miranda: - Hey.

- Is this a bad time?
- No.

No, I'm just, uh, looking over
my financial documents,

trying to decide whether to...

To sign them or not?

Yeah.

[ Chuckles ]

Which makes this either
the worst or best possible time

for me to do this.

Callie...

[ Sighs ]

There's something
I've wanted to say to you

for the past few days,

but with everything on your mind,

I... I just couldn't.

Okay.

I don't want you to leave Atlanta.

Miranda.

You're the first good friend
I've made in a long time.

I know. I feel the same way about you.

Seriously, do you know how hard
it is to meet someone like you

in our business...

someone who knows what they're doing

and someone who you can
completely count on?

Callie, you're a rock star.

[ Chuckles ] You're the reason the
hospital hums the way it does,

and I know there isn't anything
management wouldn't do

to keep you here.

[ Voice breaking ]
But what's even rarer in our business

is when that person
turns out to be a friend

who I hope to have in my life
for a really long time.

[ Voice breaking ]
Oh, God.

[ Sniffles ]

[ Sniffles ]

[ Sighs ]

So, what's the going rate

of clearing out a 200-year-old house

of some pesky ghosts?

How do you afford all that equipment?

I mean, do... do you write books?

Teach?

A little murder-for-hire on the side?

As in that 50 grand

that Ryan Baker paid
into your PayPal account?

Ryan didn't hire me to kill his wife.

He wanted me to debunk
the presence of Martha's spirit,

but that was before
I discovered she was real.

I... I was going to give the money back.

Just not anytime soon.

Otherwise, there goes your
"take the money and run" money.

I would never abandon Martha.

The connection was too strong.

Our connection was too strong.

Martha was troubled and needed my help.

Oh. Oh. Oh, okay.

Then, uh... then I guess
she must have told you, too.

Told me what?

You expect me to believe
she connected with you?

Well, we didn't friend each other

on Facebook or anything,

but she has been leading me
around the plantation,

which is how I know about

her late husband Yankee Dan's
pocket watch...

you know, the one she wants me to find,

the one that might
shed some light on the past

and ease that restless soul
you keep talking about?

You're lying about Martha.

She never told you about any watch.

Well, certainly,
she told you, too, right?

Oh.

Oh, wait.

That's right. I forgot.

You're a fraud.

Martha never contacted you.

You just wish she could
so you could really cash in.

[ Knock on door ]

Really?

You got to hear this.

Daniel: It took a while,

but our audio guys
were finally able to dig out

the other voice in the recording.

Chelsea: You think I'm stupid?!

I know what's going on!

You're sleeping with her, aren't you?

You're screwing my sister, Jackie!

Ryan: Well, can you blame me, huh,

you heartless, money-grubbing
bitch? Just shut up!

Yeah? What are you gonna
do about it, huh?

What are you gonna do, you coward?

Just shut up, Chelsea.

I hate you. I swear to God, I hate you.

I wish you were dead!

That's pretty much the end of it.

Just dead air from that point on.

- So to speak.
- So, wait.

The husband was having an affair
with the victim's sister?

After all this, it was really
just a crime of passion.

Hey, never underestimate
the power of love, Carlos.

Love makes people do crazy things...

even dead people.

Look...

I didn't kill my wife, detective.

Obviously, things were deteriorating

between me and Chelsea, but...

it just seemed like...

the worse things got,

the more she needed
to make herself happy.

Like spending you into bankruptcy.

So, you turned to the only person

that knew what a handful
your wife was... her sister.

Now, if you could only get
your wife out of the picture,

all of that could be yours.

No. No. No. I... it wasn't like that.

Jackie was a mistake.

She and I both knew that,

and believe it or not,
after that blowup,

Chelsea and I had a long conversation.

We agreed to sell the house,

to start over and work on our marriage.

As nuts as my wife could be...

the fact is...

I still loved her.

[ Groans ]

Oh.

You need a band-aid?

Do you need a hand?

What hand did Chelsea write with?

She was left-handed. Why?

Daniel, need you
to check something for me.

[ Door hinges creak ]

Martha?

Martha.

Is this it?

Is this what's been
troubling you all these years?

[ Window thudding ]

[ Gasps ]

[ Gasps softly ]

Martha?

Martha?

Martha?

Martha, Martha, Martha?

I had a feeling this was about love.

Wait.

I can explain.

Without lying this time?

I found this on the property.

I was going to turn it over
to the police,

but I just... I wanted...

Martha to tell you
why her husband's watch

was that important.

Exactly.

You get it, detective.

Well, I get that you were so desperate

to connect with Martha

that you'd do practically anything...

Including murder.

Murder?

Yeah.

I... I could never kill anyone.

I revere life.

Just not as much as you revere the dead,

as in that night that
you found Chelsea grave-robbing

her great-great-grandfather's tomb?

She told you she was selling
the entire Cooley legacy

and planning to bulldoze Martha's home,

because, let's face it...
haunted or not,

no one was gonna
buy this drafty, old house.

I told her

what destroying this house
would do to Martha.

It would damn her to a life
of eternal earthbound hell,

but she didn't care.

She just wanted the money.

So, you strangled her in a fit of rage,

and then you gilded that lily
by burying an axe in her back,

therefore keeping the Cooley lore alive

and keeping your paranormal
cash cow mooing.

No, it was never about the money.

[ Voice breaking ]
I was trying to ease Martha's pain!

By killing her
great-great-granddaughter.

Yeah.

Good luck with that.

Martha was so angry

that her electromagnetic field
futzed the recording,

but she wanted you caught,

so she went and did the next-best thing.

She went and got help.

[ Window thudding ]

[ Chuckles ]

And when you realized that the police

would never believe that
a ghost committed the murder,

well, then, you did
the next-best thing...

you tried to blame the living...

Ryan would be my guess,

since you heard all their fights...

using Chelsea's right index finger

to write his name in blood,
then abandoning that effort

when you heard a car
pull up to the house.

Only Chelsea's left-handed, Ed,

and you're right-handed...

something only her family would know.

Thank you.

Okay.

Okay, but tell me something.

If you think
this ghost business is nonsense,

then how come you believe in Martha?

Who says I do?

Huh.

"God bless you, Yankee Dan. Moses."

Moses was Harriet Tubman's...

code name during the war...

Which would mean
that the Cooley plantation

must have been part of
the underground rail road?

A slave would never kill a man

that was in the business
of freeing slaves,

but Yankee Dan's next-door
neighbor, Colonel Brown, would.

I mean, they were his property,

and your great-great-grandfather
was stealing them

and helping them escape North,

where he met Harriet Tubman

and, I'm guessing, he got his nickname.

[ Voice breaking ]
I always knew

that there was a missing piece
to our family's history.

[ Sniffles ]
And now I know.

[ Chuckles ]

You know, it was like
Martha was just trying

to tell us all the truth.

Which, unfortunately,
she took to her grave,

or risk the same fate as her husband.

Thank you, Detective,

for getting to the bottom
of my family's past.

I don't know how I'll ever
be able to repay you.

Well, you could use this watch

to finally get the recognition
your family deserves.

[ Sniffles ]

[ Door closes ]

Well, Martha?

Did I get it right?

Rest in peace, Martha.

Now you and your husband
can be together forever.

[ Sighs ]

[ Thudding in distance ]

[ Crickets chirping ]

Hello?

Is anyone here?

Hey.

What are you doing here?

I, uh... I hadn't heard from you.

I...

Are you okay?

Callie.

I just...

I just want you to know that
this is the hardest decision

I've ever had to make
in my entire life...

- Cal... - And I have worked so
hard to get where I am...

I know. I know you have.

Through Ray being in prison,

though the divorce,
raising Jeff on my own,

and I'm... I'm doing it.

I'm doing what I love,
and I want to continue

to do what I love
for the rest of my life,

and I know that
if I walk away now, I... I can't...

but I also know that
if you really love someone

and he really loves you,

that together, you can just...
you can make it work.

So...

Yes.

Yes?

Yes, Jim Longworth,

I would love to come home
and be your wife.

[Music]
I know it's hard

I can see in your eyes

but don't you walk away from me

'cause I'm gonna be there for you

for you, for you, for you, for you...
