The Event (2010–2011): Season 1, Episode 16 - You Bury Other Things Too - full transcript

Sophia and the other Sleepers mourn their losses after negotiations are derailed. While observing Simon's reaction to the events, Sterling begins to doubt his loyalties and devises a test. President Martinez tasks Senator Catherine Lewis with rooting out any other moles within the White House. Elsewhere, Sean and Vicky are on the verge of tracking down Dempsey, but it may be exactly what he was anticipating.

SEAN: Previously
on The Event...

Tell me where Dempsey is.
He Ieft for France
this morning.

Somewhere in the
Jura Mountains.

I made good on my
end of the deal,
now I'm done.

You're done when
I say you're done.

When I get Dempsey,
you'II be free.

Why is Vicky helping you?
I'm blackmailing her.

Ifyou haven't
noticed, Ms. Roberts
doesn't do anything

she doesn't want to do.

My guest tonight
is Senator Catherine
Lewis of AIaska.

What kind of game
are you playing?

Tell me what Inostranka is

and I'II start throwing
softballs instead of grenades.

Deal.

ELIAS: Move your men
in and take the church.

You have no idea what
we are capable of.

It's them.

SOPHIA: I want three buses
delivered to the church.

There may be an
opportunity to exploit.

Simon Lee is one of them.

It's Agent Lee's voice.
What the hell is going on?

SOPHIA:
We're completely defenceless.

She was bluffing.

This ends now.

GERARD: I have enough fuel
for one bus, that's it.

THOMAS: Overtake Sophia's bus.
Pull ahead of her now!

No!

(PEOPLE PANTING)

Where are we?

We're safe.

This is where
Thomas has been
hiding our people.

I want confirmations.
We need identification
on the casualties.

We have cameras
on the ground, sir.
They're deploying now.

BLAKE: Switching
cameras now sir.

Congratulations, Agent Lee.

We managed to cripple
their command structure.

Your hard work is finally
starting to pay off.

Thank you, sir,

but it was
a team effort.

Director Sterling,

with me. We need to prepare
a statement for the press.

(SIGHS)

Sophia is gone

and Agent Lee is our only
Iink to where she might be.

We should arrest him,
interrogate him.

I can't guarantee
that Simon will talk.

And once he finds out
we know he's one of them,
our advantage is Iost.

Agent Lee is gonna
wonder how we knew.

He'II suspect his
cover's been blown,
if he doesn't already.

Then we need to flush him out
sooner rather than Iater.

(BREATHING HEAVILY)

BLAKE: (ECHOING) Agent Lee.

Agent Lee.

Agent Lee.

Agent Lee, we caught a break.

NASA satellites have
identified two unique
electromagnetic signatures

corresponding to the
activation of the portal.

They're analysing
the data now,

but it could Iead us
to the Iocation of
their portal device

as well as the Iocation
of the third bus and Sophia.

I'II gather my men.

We'II be ready
to move on it.

Excellent.

This could be
the killing blow.

Excuse me.
Everything okay?

SWAT ON RADIO: Roger that,
we're on our special detail.

He take the bait?
He did.

I expect he'II make
a call to Sophia
any moment now.

And we're ready
to decrypt it?

(EXHALES)
AII of NSA's surveillance
capabilities are focused

on Agent Lee's
cell phone. He makes
the call, we'II hear it.

Track him right to Sophia.

(LOCKS DOOR)

SWAT: We have no visual.
BLAKE: Start the tap.

AII right. I've
put him on speaker.

(CELL PHONE VIBRATING)

DISTORTED VOICE:
I'm scrambling my voice in
case they decrypt the call.

They know. Your phone
is tapped. They're waiting
for you to call Sophia.

Put the earpiece on.

What's going on?
He hasn't made the call.

Can you see inside that room?
No, Mr. President.

We need to get you out now.

He's coming out.
SWAT: Follow team,
keep your distance.

He's on the move.

BLAKE: Looking for another
place to make the call.

BIue team,

target is in
the northwest
hallway stairwell.

Stay on him.

DISTORTED VOICE:
Up ahead is the kitchen.

Turn the corner, you'll be
out of line-of-sight of
the security cameras.

The north exit will put
you on the basement level.

Okay, any minute now.

(INDISTINCT CHATTER ON RADIO)

Where did he go?

He's gone, sir.

How can he disappear?
We have hundreds

of cameras watching every
inch of this building.

BLAKE: He must have
found a blind spot.

AII units, give me
a status report now.

There's no sign of him, sir.

Follow the evac tunnel
to the Treasury service exit.

A grey Camry is parked
at the top of the ramp.

SWAT: To southeast
exit, nothing here.

He's here. Put him up.

BLAKE: He's in
the service tunnel.

Lock down all the exits, now!

You have to switch cars.

There's a black SUV
parked in the alley
off Lexington.

AII teams, report.

SWAT: He's gone,
sir. We lost him.

(INDISTINCT CHATTER ON RADIO)

Negative! Negative. He's gone!

(PANTING)

I'm out.

Be careful out there, Simon.

You, too.

We've just received
word that government
sources now believe

the Pakistani terrorist
organisation, Tariq-E-Salim,

is responsible for
the devastating attack on
the Washington Monument.

At this point, no word
on when President Martinez
will address the nation,

but in a written statement,

he has vowed to bring
those responsible to justice.

The trail on Agent
Lee has gone cold,

but we have his picture
out to all federal and
Iocal Iaw enforcement

saying he's wanted
in connection with
the attacks.

Someone warned him.
Someone helped him get away.

It appears that
way, Mr. President.

Another mole?

It could be anyone.
Someone I trust,

someone in our inner circle.

Have you seen this?

They've already ID'd
the SIeepers on those buses.

Sophia's people
have made inroads
at the highest Ievels.

They're working in defence,
communications, government.

One of them was
appointed to the Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals

by my predecessor,
for God's sake.

We're never going
to be safe until we find

a sure-fire way of rooting
these SIeepers out.

I already have some
ideas on the subject.

So do I.

Has Senator Lewis arrived?
Yes, Mr. President.

Senator Lewis? How does
she factor into this?

You'II see.
Senator Lewis.

Thanks for coming,
particularly under
the circumstances.

You know my Chief
of Staff, Richard Peel,
and Director Sterling.

Gentlemen.
PIease.

Of course, Mr. President.

You all must have
had quite a day.

(EXHALES)
I understand two of the

victims of the attack
were your constituents.

Yes, Frank and Jackie Gibbons.

Oh...
I spoke with their family

and reiterated your
pledge that their murders
will not go unpunished.

And they won't.
That's why you're here.

The attack wasn't the work
of Pakistani terrorists.

That's just our cover story.

It was the SIeepers.

Oh, my God.

Why are you telling me this?

Because we need
to find them.
AII of them.

And the program we
need to adopt needs
to come from Congress,

it can't come from
the executive branch.

If we don't uncover
the non-terrestrials,
our country, our planet,

may be forever destroyed.

What do you need me
to do, Mr. President?

I want to initiate a program
to test every American's DNA.

As you know, the SIeepers are
genetically different from us

by a Iittle Iess than
one percent. We can
screen for that.

And you want to do this
without anyone knowing.

You gave up your career
as a doctor when your
husband ran for office.

And before that,
you spent time
at the CDC.

In your opinion, how can we
covertly pursue such a policy?

That's assuming you're onboard
with the idea, of course.

My advice,

we...

We have the CDC
announce an outbreak

of a drug-resistant
strain of tuberculosis.

Convince people
that the only way
to stop a pandemic

is to impose
mandatory testing.

Then, with each
test you administer,

you can secretly
gather a DNA sample.

Can you get this
program up and running?

It would take some time
to Iay the groundwork.

Let's start now. Here.

A pilot program to test
the White House personnel.

I support that.

Mr. President, maybe we
should discuss this internally

before putting
anything in motion.

The time for discussion
is over. Senator, you're
running point on this,

but I want you
to report all of your
findings directly to me.

Understood?

Of course, Mr. President.

Thank you.

CATHERINE: Thank you,
Mr. President.

RICHARD: Thanks,
Mr. President.

Dad?

Hey.
Hi.

You okay?

Sorry. Didn't mean
to startle you,

but you seemed Iost.

No.

No, I was just
going for a walk.

My mistake.

That's actually
the wrong way.

What do you mean
it's the wrong way?

Your house is
back there, Leila.

How do you know my name?

I've been asked
to Iook after you.

By who?

It's not important.

We Iook after
each other here.

Are you telling me
that I can't Ieave?

There's no reason to Ieave.

Everything you
need is here.

You're safe.

I don't feel safe.

Now that's just silly.

But you should be
heading back now.

I know you wouldn't
want anyone to worry.

(SOBBING)

Sophia.

Simon.

(EXHALES)
I'm so sorry.

Thank you.

I'm glad you're here.

SOPHIA: Our planet is dying.

Earth, it seems,
is our people's
only hope.

I swore an oath.

We all did.

To refrain from harming
benevolent civilizations
Iike the one on this planet.

That has been my
guiding principle
for the Iast 66 years,

but, now, after
witnessing the slaughter
of our people in Los Angeles,

I can no Ionger consider
this population benevolent.

The oath no
Ionger applies.

What matters now
is that our star
has begun to implode.

Two billion Iives
are at stake.

I'm prepared to bring
Thomas' plan to fruition.

We will bring all our
people here and make
this planet our own.

No matter what that
means for those who call
this place their home.

Dempsey's expedition
is deep in the mountains,

almost to the Swiss border.

That's where he's set up camp?
(SCOFFS) No, not this man.

He Ioves to spend
his billions.

My contact tells me
he's taken a place at
the Chateau de Perrault.

Where's that?

Right here in
the town of Morez.

But it appears that
his business here
is concluding.

Then we need to get to him
tonight before he Ieaves.

You have details
on his security?

Oh, yes. French,
former British SAS.

The estate is gated,

but to the east is
the Risoux Forest.

You can approach
from the treeline.

There's a service
road right here,

and at the end
of it, le chateau.

The road puts you
right in his backyard.

Security will be most
relaxed before first Iight.

That will be
your best chance.

Then that's what we'II do.

(DOOR CREAKS)

You should try to get
some sleep before we go.

I can get by on two hours.

That's what they
trained us for.

What do you plan on
doing with Dempsey?

Turn him in.
See him prosecuted.

Turn him in to
the French police?

And you think they're
going to care about what
he's done in America?

They will when I give
them the details.

And they'II just take
your word for it.

Sean, you're no one.

And wanted for murder
against the word of
a respected billionaire.

Even if we had proof,
which we don't,

Dempsey has enough
money to buy himself
out of anything.

What's the alternative?
You want justice?

You want to end this?

There's only one way.

He needs to die.

On some Ievel, you've
known all along that
that's how this would end.

You just haven't
wanted to face it.

(COMPUTER BEEPS)
(SEAN TYPING)

What are you doing?

(SEAN EXHALES)
(COMPUTER BEEPING)

I just deactivated
the software that would
have exposed your son.

You're free to go.

But why?

You've done your part.
You've gotten me this far.

You have a family.
You have a son.

I have nothing.

How are we coming along?

Well, I think.

I'd put the date about
third millennium BC.

The glyphs tell
the origin story
of a tribe of,

I think the word is best
translated as "guardians."

A tribe of sentinels.

Yes.

We'II Iearn more once
I finish the translation.

I think we know enough
already, Doctor...

Sir... Sir, not with
your bare hands.

You might contaminate
the surface of the Iimestone.

I see. Well...

Oh, my God!

What have you done!

What are you doing?
What does it Iook Iike?

I told you, I don't need
your help, I can handle this.

That's not what this
is about any more.

You know the things
I've done for Dempsey,

and I want a chance
to put that behind me.

What we now know is
that the terrorist group
behind the destruction

of the Washington Monument

has a Iong history
of aggressive acts
on Western targets,

and I am going to use every
resource at my disposal

to bring these
perpetrators
to justice.

But Iet me assure this
group, and any group

that would endeavor to enhance
their global profile by
setting its sights on America,

you will not win.

You may take monuments,
you may take Iives,

but you will never take
from us the God-given right

that is our Iiberty.

Good night, and may God bless
the United States of America.

(CAMERAS CLICKING)

We're clear.
Nicely done, sir.

EIias, can I speak
to you for a moment?

Sure.

Richard, give me a minute?

Certainly, Mr. President.

Okay, Iet's wrap
it up here.

(WHISPERING) Hey.

(WHISPERING) What is this?

My staff has to undergo
immediate, mandatory
testing for tuberculosis?

That's right.

We've got measles outbreak
all over, polio, H1N1,

and there's no mandatory
testing program in effect
for any of those...

Christina, what's your point?

This is the public health.

I mean, if there's more
to this story, I think
people have a right to know.

AII right. Okay. Okay.

(SIGHS) The outbreak

is a cover.

We're going
to administer
the test

and screen blood cells
from the syringes
for SIeeper DNA.

SIeeper DNA?

It's the only way to find...
The only way to what?

Violate civil Iiberties?

Invade privacy?
At Ieast one of them

has infiltrated a sensitive,
high-Ievel position within
the government.

We can't take the chance
that there are more...

I don't believe you're
going along with this.

Look, I'm not going
along with anything.
This was my idea.

Christina, this is a war.

AII the more reason
to stick to your principles.

(SIGHS)

It Iooks
so peaceful
from here.

You would never
know the violence
of the universe.

We knew our sun
would die eventually.

But now we must write the
next chapter of our history.

By bringing them here?

Two billion people.

Is that even possible?

There is a way.

Assuming you
are successful,

where will you
put everyone?

They'II need Iand,
food, infrastructure.

There aren't enough
resources for the human
population as it is.

I'm considering
solutions to
that problem.

What kind of solutions?

Permanent ones.

We need to make
room here, Simon.

You disagree
with my decision.

I do.

I'm grateful for
your honesty.

I don't Iike it either.

But we're facing
the destruction
of our race,

and it's my duty to take
whatever action is necessary

to make sure that
doesn't happen.

You've always been Ioyal,

even when
it seemed
impossible.

You are an asset
to our people.

Do I have your
Ioyalty, Simon?

Yes.

Swear to me.

You have my Ioyalty.

MICHAEL: It's for
your own protection.

LEILA: Dad, I'm scared, okay?

And it doesn't help having
some creep keep tabs on me.

I mean, I can't believe
you're okay with this.

I have to be.
Why?

Because these are
Sophia's orders.

Sweetie, I know it's
gonna take some time
getting used to this place.

Getting used to?

How Iong do you
expect to stay here?

How Iong do
you expect me
to stay here?

(KNOCKING ON DOOR)

I need to talk to you.

Outside.

SIMON: You were at that
meeting today. You know
what she's planning.

She's in a difficult position.

Making room for our people
means killing off humans.

How many would have
to go, Michael?
Half? Two-thirds?

How much will be enough?

Look, I know you
don't support this.

I saw you at the meeting.

The way you reacted when
she announced her plan.

I saw you.
Look, we don't even
know if it's possible.

But if it becomes possible,
you know what the consequences
for this planet will be.

If anybody should be
against this, it's you.

Your wife was one of them,
your daughters are half...

I don't need a Iecture
on my own family tree.

I'm Ieaving,

and I want you to come
with me. You and Leila.

If we can warn people,
go to the government
with what we know,

at Ieast they stand a chance.
Michael, we can save Iives.

What kind of world do
you want her to Iive in?

(SIGHS)

We do this, there's no
going back. You know that.

We'II be Iabeled
traitors forever.

I know.

We'II go with you.

(BREATHING NERVOUSLY)

You Iose
the nerves
eventually.

What are you talking about?

I'm talking about what
happens when you kill.

People deal with it
in one of two ways.

One is, it grows in you.

You may drink or take
pills to keep it foggy,
but it's always there.

Haunting you.

The other way is,
you bury it so deep
you never think about it.

But you bury
other things, too.

Things you miss.

I'm doing this.

I know.

I just wanted you
to be prepared.

There. Up ahead.
That's the old stone
wall. That's our turn.

VICKY: Pull over here.

What?

Did we take
the wrong road?

No.

You saw the stone wall.
That's the Iandmark
Henri gave us.

(DISTANT WAIL)

Do you hear that?

Just wait here.

(CAR DOOR CLOSES)

(LOADS GUN)

(YELLING TO STOP IN FRENCH)

(GRUNTING)

Vicky, on your Ieft!
On your Ieft!

(GROANING)

(BOTH GRUNTING)

Run, Sean!

Run!

(HORN BLARING)

(GRUNTING)

(PANTING)

(GRUNTS)

Ah, nice to see you
again, Ms. Roberts.

You've traveled a Iong way.

I hope it was
worth the trip.

My trip's not over
until you're dead.

Someone needs
to put you down.

It may be difficult for
you to understand this,
but we are on the same side.

The truth is,
Ms. Roberts,

I am part of a Iong
Iine of people,

sentinels,

who have been given the task
of securing us against them.

Them?

What can you tell
me about Mr. Walker?

What type of
connections
does he have?

How did he co-opt
you into joining him
in this crusade?

Why do you care so
much about Walker?

Because every time I've
put an obstacle in his path,

he has found some
way to surmount it.

(CHUCKLING)

It's very curious.

However, it's, uh,

becoming clearer.

Part of the tapestry.

Kill her.

(PANTING AND STRUGGLING)

(WHISTLING)

(GRUNTS)

(GROANS)

(BOTTLE SHATTERING)

Sean?

What are you doing?
We were ambushed.

What?
You set us up.

No... Mais non, je te jure.

I don't know what
you're talking about.

They took Vicky.

And there was no chateau.

So now you're going to tell me
exactly what I want to know,

or you're gonna
wish you were dead.

CATHERINE: I have a contact
at the CDC that we can trust.

He's been adding dummy
reports of drug-resistant
TB cases to their database.

This will mimic the early
signs of a potential epidemic.

And that should
support our cover-up.
At Ieast for now.

Now, where do we stand
with the pilot program?

I've asked everyone
with White House clearance

to sign the testing agreement.

And?

Some were harder
to convince than others,

but the threat
of an extended

involuntary quarantine
seemed to sway them.

When does the testing begin?

A few days.

But you should know that
there was one holdout.

Who?

Your wife.

You don't have
to test Christina.

Well, she may not
be a staff member,

but not only does she
work here, she Iives here.

She knows the truth
about the test.

You told her?
I did.

She has some ethical
issues about the program,

and her objection to the test
is a philosophical one.

Hmm.

And you're certain that's why
she's refusing to be tested?

You're going to cross my
wife's name off that Iist.

Mr. President, you asked
me to clean your house.

And that's what I'm doing.
Catherine.

Let it go.

Thank you.

(GROANING)

Tell me where Dempsey is.

Sean, please.
AII I have

is the information
I gave you. PIease!

You Ied us into
an ambush. You
sold us out.

(PLEADING IN DENIAL IN FRENCH)

I was the one who was
deceived by my contact.

(GROANS)

Stop Iying!
Enough!

Where is he? Where
is he holding Vicky?

I don't know!

I would never do anything
to harm Vicky, you know that!

Sean. Sean, please, untie me.
I don't believe you.

Sean, untie me.
We'II get down there.

They are going
to torture her
and kill her.

I don't have time for games.
This is your Iast chance.

We have to go get her.

You have to take me
out of this. No, please.

Don't make me do this.
I beg of you, please.

Trust me, Sean.

PIease, Sean, you
have to believe me.

Sean, please, you're
not thinking straight.

PIease trust me. No...

(GROANS LOUDLY)

SEAN: Come on!

(COUGHING AND GAGGING)

I don't know, Sean.
PIease, I don't know!

(COUGHS)

Screw you.

(SIGHS)

(GROANS LOUDLY)

Henri. Henri...

Stop, please!
Henri, just tell me.

I don't wanna
do this to you,

but I need to get
to Dempsey now,

so Iet's just get
this over with!

(MOANING IN PAIN)

Okay.

Now, again.
Tell me where
they are.

Give me the address!

(SIGHS)

No! Okay!

AII right. PIease, stop.

He's in Morez.

116 rue Voltaire.

(EXHALES)

(EXHALES)

(LOADS GUN)

We're all ready.

Where's Leila?
She's not coming.

You can't Ieave
her alone here.

She won't be alone.

Michael...
I'm sorry, Simon.

(MAN COCKING GUN)
Hold it, Simon.

Step away from the car.

(EXHALES)

(GRUNTS)

(GROANING)

(GRUNTING AND PANTING)

Is this your
idea of Ioyalty?

Turning others against me?

Sophia, you Ieft me...
You Iied to me, Simon.

We are adapting
to changing circumstances.

This is how
a species survives.

But you're talking about
killing hundreds of millions
of innocent people.

What about your people?

We're going ahead
with the plan.

Ifyou aren't with us,
then you are against us.

I'II never go along
with genocide.

Then today I have
Iost a second son.

Take him.

MAN: Let's go.

SIMON: You can't
do this! Sophia!

You can't do this.
This isn't who you are!

Get in the car.

(CAR DOOR BEING OPENED)

You did the right
thing, Michael.

I know.

(GRUNTING)

(COUGHING AND GRUNTING)

(COUGHING)

CHRISTINA: I think
we should offerthree
dressings forthe salad.

Valerie told him
a nice vinaigrette.

An Italian
vinaigrette,
maybe and...

Mmm-hmm.

(CHRISTINA CONTINUES
SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
