The Enid Blyton Secret Series (1997–…): Season 1, Episode 2 - The Secret of Spiggy Holes - full transcript

Romance is in the air - much to the children's concern - when Thaddeus and Charlotte go off on a book promotional tour together, leaving Peggy, Mike, Laura and Jack in the capable hands of their wacky new nanny - Ruby. The children discover that nearby to their house a boy is being held prisoner and his identity is eventually revealed to be the kidnapped Prince of Baronia. The Prince has been kidnapped by the King's brother who plans to hold the boy ransom and usurp the throne himself... While the children attempt to rescue the young prince, Charlotte discovers that Thaddeus has been kidnapped from their hotel on the book tour, and she sets out to solve the mystery. Charlotte discovers that Thaddeus has been captured by the King of Baronia. She successfully tricks the guards and rescues him. The King believed Thaddeus was involved with the kidnapping of his son. As the story evolves the children, against all odds, successfully outwit the kidnappers and deliver the Prince back to the King of Baronia - and are unexpectedly reunited with Charlotte and Thaddeus. As a thank you for their efforts, the King invites the children and adults on holiday to Baronia with their new friend, the Prince.

- [Thaddeus] I'm sailing around the world!

Charlotte Clancy I presume.

- Look out!

- Dad's alive, I've seen him in my dreams.

- We've become the
children's legal guardians,

which means we can sell their house.

- I hate this place and I hate them.

- I'm not wasting money buying food

for a dog that won't work.

So tonight I'm getting rid of him.

- [Peggy] Now where are we gonna hide him?

- There it is, our secret island.

- I'm not sure if I like
this, it's a bit spooky.

- [Laura] Should we unload the boat?

- Good idea.

- [Jack] Only the blankets.

- [Peggy] Why?

- [Jack] The food's safe in the boat,

otherwise animals could get it.

- Animals?

- Just voles and field mice.

- Is the boat alright here, Jack?

- Of course.

We ought to find somewhere
safe to sleep first.

- Who said you were in charge?

- I did, Peggy.

What do you suggest?

- Why don't we sleep under these trees?

- Good idea.

What were you going to say, Jack?

- [Jack] Why don't we
sleep under these trees?

- Where are you off to now?

- Well personally I'm
going to go get some grass

and dry leaves so I can have a soft bed.

I wouldn't dream of
telling you to do the same.

- Oh pack it in you two,

you've only been on the
island five minutes.

- I like the idea of a nice soft bed,

I don't care who said it.

(ominous music)

(phone ringing)

- Peach.

- Foggo.

I want to talk to you about organizing

a search party to look for Thaddeus.

- Hey listen buddy get off my case.

I'm not talking to you or anybody else.

Charlotte Clancy is
our top photojournalist

and that Arnold guy is
under contract with us.

- Yes, but.

- When they're found,

we have the sole rights
to their story, okay?

They ain't allowed to talk
to nobody else, you got that?

- We don't know they're alive yet, man.

- Of course they're alive,

they're survivors, they're a great team.

- What do you mean?

They've only just met.

- Yeah I know they've never
worked together before,

but believe me they're like ham and eggs.

They're out there somewhere right now

pulling together to get back
home, you can bet on it.

(seagulls crying)

- What have you got there?

- Water bottles.

And by the time I finish with these,

sauce pans, frying pans, and plates.

- You're actually
enjoying this, aren't you?

- Of course.

Live for the moment, Charlotte.

Look around you.

We're on a fabulous deserted
island, the swimming's perfect,

got somewhere to sleep, catch food to eat.

If this were in a holiday
brochure it'd cost you thousands.

- Yes, but then I could choose
who I went on holiday with.

And come the end of the week I'd know

a Boeing 747 would be
arriving to take me home.

and it was warm and

- Don't be sad.

- No, no, you don't
understand, he's alright,

he'll come back for us by Christmas.

- What's the matter with those kids?

- They're as bad as their father.

- Your aunt's been calling
you for the last 10 minutes.

What are you kids?

Harriet.

Harriet, the kids, they've gone.

(upbeat music)

- Hey Thaddeus, the fish is burning.

- I'm sorry.

I was miles away.

I was thinking about the
children, how I always

used to take them for granted
when my wife was alive.

And now.

- You're worried about them?

- Yeah.

- So, let's stop day dreaming
and get off this island.

What we need is a boat.

- A boat?

Of course we need a boat.

And if I had the right
tools I'd have a shot at it.

But if you wanna try building a boat

with what we've got, you're welcome.

- Alright maybe not a boat,
but what's wrong with a raft?

- Plenty.

- In other words, you
haven't got the guts for it.

Thaddeus Arnold, the great adventurer.

- Listen lady, if you're
stupid enough to go out there

on a raft, then I will build us one.

- Right, you do that.

- Right, I will.

(serene music)

- Oh no.

Wake up everyone.

- What?

- The boat's gone.

- It can't be.

All our stuff's gone.

- And I made a point of
asking him if it was safe.

- Jack's gone as well.

- No he hasn't, and the
boat's perfectly safe.

I've hidden it in some thick reeds.

- Well you might've told us.

- You were all fast asleep.

- [Mike] What about the food and stuff?

- I've put it all in the
cave for the time being.

It's nice and dry.

- You didn't tell us

- I didn't know until just now.

And there's a little stream
with good fresh water.

- This place just gets better and better.

Come on, let's go an explore

- [Mike] What about breakfast?

- We can eat later.

In fact from now on, we decide
when we're going to eat.

Come on, let's explore.

- Arnold's children, what about them?

- How are they?

- How do you think man,
they just lost their father.

- Yes, yes, a tragic time for them, sir.

- Help, how?

- Well, we'd like to tell their story.

- Help exploit them, you mean.

I'm warning you, if you go anywhere near

those poor children, I'll

(silly music)

- Well?

- Not a sight nor hide nor hair of them.

- Where have you been?

- Where haven't I been?

I've been all over.

- Broughton?

- And beyond.

I reckon I've covered a
radius of at least 25 miles.

- No.

- But anything could've happened to them.

- I have been.

It took me an hour to get that.

- What do you mean?

- Your stream has turned to a trickle.

- [Thaddeus] Why didn't you tell me?

- You were enjoying yourself far

too much doing the Robinson Crusoe bit.

- Well at least Crusoe's man

- Are you suggesting I've been slacking?

- Yes.

No.

Well actually yes.

Look, let's not argue.

- Is it serious?

The water?

- Could be.

- Well, the sooner we get

this raft finished then, the better.

- Easier with two of us, don't you think?

- Lord who?

- Foggo, Lord Foggo.

I was a close friend of Thaddeus Arnold's.

- Oh, yes, your lordship.

- [Lord Foggo] I understand you're

looking after his children.

- Yes.

- I wondered if I could help in any way.

- What, you mean money?

I mean financially?

- Well my wife and I would
be delighted to have them

if they're too much of a handful for you.

- Oh thank you very much your lordship,

but they're no trouble at all.

- Oh, settled in alright, have they?

- Ah yes, like peas in a pod.

- Oh, it's you.

- Looking for you, you fool.

Thank goodness you're safe.

- Well, well, well, you were
actually worried about me.

- I was simply worried where
you'd got to, that's all.

What are you doing?

- You said you wanted a
raft so I'm collecting wood.

- Great.

Well I'll go get us some water.

Cup of tea for the workout.

- Actually I.

I could do with some help here.

(phone ringing)

- Yes?

Yes that's me.

Dwight T. Peach?

- That's right, Henry,
Dwight T. Peach the Third.

- The third?

What, you some sort of lord or something?

- Uh no, no sir.

I'm the editor of Scoop Magazine.

Your brother in law was
under contract to us.

- Thaddeus?

- Yes, Thaddeus Arnold.

Tragic news, Henry, tragic
news, we're all cut up about it.

I was wondering how the
kids were taking it?

- The kids?

- Arnold's children, I hear
you're looking after them.

- Well, well, yes.

- Well what I'd like to
do is interview them,

take a few pictures, you know brave kids

bearing out, that sort of thing.

- [Henry] Oh.

- Is that a problem?

- Well.

- [Peach] There'd be some money in it.

- Oh well not a problem exactly, no.

Thing is they're not here just now.

No, they're away.

But as soon as they get
back I'll let you know.

- Well that would be most appreciated.

In the mean time, I'll send
you an exclusive contract

to sign on their behalf.

- Contract?

- Yes.

We don't want people to take advantage

of those poor fatherless children, do we?

- No, no, absolutely not.

- Good man.

I knew we could do business together.

Pleasure talking with you, Henry.

Yes!

- Laura's asleep.

- It's this fresh air.

Mike's not far off as well.

- Jack?

- [Jack] What?

- Couldn't be anyone else
on the island, could there?

- No, why do you ask?

- Oh I woke up in the middle
of the night and I had

the strangest feeling that
someone was watching me.

- Probably just your guardian angel.

(branch snapping)

- What was that?

- Ah, it's just a rabbit.

They often do that to
warn each other of danger.

- You sure?

- Of course.

(ominous music)

- What's out there, young Henry?

- Eh?

Oh, it's you Luke.

I was trying to see if
I could spot those kids.

- I'd let 'em be if I was you.

If that Jack boy don't come
back, that's his affair.

Never wanted him in the first place.

- You're a hard man, Luke.

- Oh no I'm not.

I'm not soft either.

If they wanna go off, let 'em be.

- Well I'll be, here Luke,
what do you make of that?

- Make of what, where?

- Thin column of smoke.

Looks like it's coming from
the middle of the lake.

- Oh that'll be the haunted island, then.

Oh I don't see nothing.

- Strange, I could've sworn I'd seen some.

Haunted island?

- Oh you're a newcomer
so you wouldn't know.

- What?

- Well they do say this monk
from the monastery went mad.

Before he could be a danger to anyone,

they marooned him on the island.

And he lived in there for 10 years,

'til suddenly he completely disappeared.

Well they do say disappeared.

Only, when I was youngin',
me and mate went out there

with a couple of girls for a
picnic, and they spread out

the grub and looked up,
and started screaming.

And me and Seth curious
like looked around,

and there he was, this
monk dressed all in black.

- And how many pints had you had that day?

- You don't believe me, do ya?

- Not a word, Luke, not a word.

- Suit yourself.

Come on, girl.

- [Henry] Haunted island.

- Yes Chief Constable,

I'm concerned about
Thaddeus Arnold's children.

The press hounds are snooping around

and that uncle of theirs

is a bit of a bad hat, apparently.

I'd be grateful if you could

send one of your men to check on them.

- [Constable] Certainly, Lord Foggo.

- Ah splendid.

Much obliged.

(serene music)

(loud splashing)

(dog barking loudly)

- A fish, great Jack!

Now we can have baked
potatoes and fish, yum.

- We'll find some more
rope, I'm sure of it.

And if we don't,

we'll plat the sage grass
together and weave our own.

- Your optimism's admirable, Charlotte,

but rafts get built on practical
realities, not fantasies.

Even if you were top
basket weaver at school.

What's that?

- What did I tell you?

Anyone would think there's
a shark at the end of this.

Give us a hand, Thaddeus.

(squealing)

- What an amazing catch, it's our sial.

You alright?

- I'll live, but no thanks
to that, whatever it is.

It's metal, I think.

What's it doing here?

- If it's what I think it is.

- What is it, something useful?

- I should say so.

It's a fair lead.

- I should know what a fair lead is?

- It means we found ourselves a dingy.

- Oh looks like we've got
some digging to do then.

- We've had concerns
about the Arnold children.

Just a routine inquiry.

The kids around?

- Uh not right at the moment.

- [PC Cooper] Will they be long?

- As a matter of fact,
they've gone camping.

- What, on their own?

- Eh, no, no no, they're
with my cousin George.

- Oh.

Well where have they gone?

- He didn't say exactly,

but I shouldn't think it would be far.

- Alright.

Well let me know when you hear from them.

Catch ya later.

- And don't forget at least two more sacks

so we can fill them and make mattresses.

And, oh, as many eggs as you can find,

and we need some bread, and.

- Peggy, we've got the list,

we know what we've got to get.

- Ah, we forgot milk.

- [Peggy] Oh yes.

- If you think we're gonna have time

to milk a cow without being seen.

- Would be nice, though.

- So would hamburgers and french fries,

but we won't be getting those either.

No Prince, out you get.

- Prince, come on boy, get out.

Good boy Prince, come on.

- [Jack] Just leave him.

Come on Mike, time to shove off.

- Funny, Prince is normally so obedient.

- That's because he
knows they're going on a

dangerous mission, and he's
going along to protect them.

- [Peggy] Laura, he's just a dog.

- Maybe, but he's a very intelligent dog.

- You should've come right out

in the open and told PC Cooper.

- Oh sure, within five minutes
it'd be all around the town.

We're supposed to be
guardians to those kids.

That's why the bank's lending us

money to buy old Luke's farm.

We've gotta find those kids,

otherwise the bank's not
gonna lend us a penny.

- All the more reason to go to the police.

They could conduct a proper search.

I tell you Henry, I'm worried.

- Then don't be.

As soon as those kids run out of food

and get hungry, they'll be back.

(intense music)

- [Jack] Shh.

(metal clattering)

- There's that fox again.

- Mike, the chicken's
ready for the market.

If we take one of these,
we'll have eggs every day.

- [Mike] Yeah, let's take one of them.

- This time I'll have it.

- Stop or I'll fire!

(dog growling)

(gun shot blasting)

Did you see anything?

- Not really.

- It's probably those darn gypsies.

- Henry don't be stupid,

there aren't any gypsies around here.

- Rubbish, they get everywhere.

And where did that dog come from?

- Well I hate to say it, but
it looked rather like Prince.

- Nonsense, he ran off didn't he?

Well wait a minute?

Perhaps it wasn't gypsies.

Perhaps it was those kids.

- Which means they wouldn't be far away.

- Right.

Well if they come back again,
next time I'll be waiting.

- That was definitely a shotgun we heard.

They'll be lying dead somewhere.

- Don't be ridiculous, Laura.

(ominous music)

- [Laura] Listen, what was that?

- [Penny] What was what?
