The authorities begin an investigation to discover the causes of the fire while the city mourns the hundreds of deaths that resulted from the tragedy.

[labored breathing]

[gasping, coughing]

[siren wails]

[coughs]

[coughing]

Get up! We have to get you
to an ambulance now.

Your back! It's smoking, man!

Here, lean on me. We need an ambulance.

Your skin is all burned.
It's melted. Let's go!

[breathing heavily]

THE ENDLESS NIGHT

[sirens blaring, people clamoring]

[tense music playing]

[woman] Portes.

Captain. I've never seen anything like it.

[coughing]

[coughing]

[coughing]

[cell phones ringing]

[captain] Oh my God. [panting]

There are so many bodies in this bathroom.

[phones continue ringing]

[bleeping]

MOM CALLING

We couldn't save anyone here.

-[whimpers]
-[captain] Hey. You can't falter now.

We need to get these kids to their parents
right now, as fast as possible.

Do you hear me?

You have to find the strength inside.

Do you understand?

We need to bring these children
back to their parents, now. All right?

All right. Let's get 'em out of here.

[people coughing]

[captain] Guys,
let the refrigerated truck through.

Gentlemen, let's organize this
so the bodies can be identified.

We have to get all bodies
to the city's gym,

and then we'll separate them
by male and female.

And don't forget to distance them.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

I just can't do this, Lívia.

I'll do it.

I'll do it.

[inhales and exhales sharply]

[sobbing]

He's not there. He's not there.

He's not there. He's not there.

[sobbing]

[Ricardo] He won't be there.

-Can't be there.
-Oh my God.

[Ricardo] No, he won't be under there.

[gasps, sobs]

[Ricardo] She won't find him here.
She won't find him here.

She won't find him.

[moans softly]

He won't be there. He won't. He's not.

[panting] He's not gonna be there.

No. No. He's not gonna be there.

No. He's not here.

-[moans]
-[Lívia] Marco's not here.

-He's not here. He's not here. He's not.
-[sobbing]

[both sobbing]

Marco's not here.

[sobbing] Marco's not here.

[somber string music playing]

[Lívia sobbing]

-Hi there.
-Lívia.

Listen to me.
I need you to go search the hospitals.

There are hundreds of injured people,
and many of them are unconscious.

Everything in our power is being done
to find your children.

-[moaning]
-I appreciate it.

-Thank you so much.
-[sobbing]

[Ricardo] No! No!

[over radio] We've got new numbers
on the Kiss nightclub tragedy.

At the moment,
52 casualties have been confirmed,

including the accordionist
from the band Guapos Baladeiros,

whose vocalist was responsible for using…

Cássio!

Shit!

Cássio's dead.

[sirens wailing]

[Antônio] Grazi, you're gonna be okay.
We're almost there.

[door opens]

[paramedic] Move out of the way, please.

Let's get her inside
as quickly as possible.

-Help me!
-[man] Excuse me, please.

Excuse me. Emergency room.

CARIDADE HOSPITAL - SANTA MARIA

-[man] Help me.
-[doctor] You can't come in. Wait here.

Slow down, guys. Excuse me.

Please check the list.
Heitor, please. He's my boy. This is him.

We have to turn every corridor

and every floor into an ICU,
even the maternity ward.

The whole hospital is now an ICU.
Swab here, please.

Professor, I don't know what's going on.

They're arriving here alive
but their breathing stops.

I don't know what to do. There aren't
enough respirators. We won't handle it.

It's not just carbon monoxide.

We need the results from the ABG.

I need you to get us more respirators,
transport, and beds, and now!

Okay.

[man] Doctor. Excuse me. Doctor.

-It's a call from your daughter.
-I can't now.

It's about your son.

He was at Kiss, and they're not able
to get in contact with him.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bernardes] I need you to call
Porto Alegre's health department

and ask for help
from all the state's hospitals.

Please get us more respirators
and personnel. Now, okay?

Hello, colonel. This is Bernardes.

Yes, sir. Captain Bernardes.

I've been discharged.
I'm at the Charitable Hospital.

Yes, sir. I need a helicopter here now.

[sirens wailing]

JANUARY 27TH, 2013

Yeah, it's really sad, you know.
Have you seen the news?

Then get over here. This will be
the most difficult case of our lives.

Portella, Rocha.

So you two are the assigned deputies?

That's right, prosecutor.
I've never witnessed such a tragedy.

They used a device that was flammable,

and it set the ceiling and the club
on fire, and it was overcrowded.

I don't know how a place like this
was given permission to run.

[Celso] Yeah,
that's what we're gonna find out.

[sobbing] Jeez, why me, dude?

I had everything. Everything!

Well, now what'll we do, Thales?

First, the whining has to stop, dude!

We have to come up with a plan.

A bunch of kids! A bunch of kids
passed away in our nightclub, Dedé!

I need to get out of here.

Get out of where, Thales?

From Santa Maria!

People are gonna want us killed, Dedé.

[tense music playing]

-[Dedé coughing]
-[woman sobbing]

[captain]
The second refrigerated truck is arriving.

SANTA MARIA'S CITY SPORTS GYMNASIUM

When you place the bodies,
make sure you identify them.

Pay attention to the victims' names,
as well as their age,

and where you're putting them.

-[man 1] Going in.
-[man 2] Yep.

[man 1] Okay, good. Thank you. Thank you.

Just a second, please. One moment.
Ma'am, I'll talk to you in a sec.

-All right. Thanks.
-[Silvana] Pedro, have you heard anything?

No. No, nothing yet.

Those girls did check in here,
but they weren't discharged.

Um, discharged?

All of the casualties have been
put in the gymnasium,

and the critical cases
are being flown to Porto Alegre…

[voice fading]

[indistinct voices]

[dramatic music playing]

[Pedro] We'll find the girls. Let's go!

[medic] I need a crash cart over here.
Hurry up!

Need a crash cart over there!

Nurse, sir.
Have you seen my daughter, Marienne?

-Marienne?
-Yes.

I did. Yes, I did. She's fine.

-She's there in the room on the right.
-Come on. Thank you.

[medic] They need help over there!

Here? Here?

That's not her. It's not.
She has to be over here.

It's not her.

Doctor, please.
The nurse said my daughter,

Marienne, would be here.
Is he confused? Is she somewhere close?

Sorry, I don't know.

For the love of God, my wife couldn't find
her at the other hospital.

Don't you recall Marienne?

This is Marianne.
Ask the receptionist one more time.

The guy explained that she was in here,
and she was fine. I--

Thank you, doctor. Come here.

Sil, look.

She's here. They checked in.

They weren't discharged,
so she's here. Let's find her.

I am sure of that. If we can locate
one of them, they'll all be together.

You're right. Let's go.

Come on! Come on! Let's go upstairs!

[wheezing, coughing]

[machine beeping rapidly]

We won't be able to treat him here.

He needs to go to Porto Alegre right away.

Prepare and identify him.
You can't lose him. Go!

SANTA MARIA'S CITY SPORTS GYMNASIUM

[somber music playing]

One more unidentified.

NAME, AGE, DATE, TIME

I told you she wasn't on the list.

Would you check once more, for God's sake?

We looked everywhere,
and we can't find her!

-Let's go to the gym, Pedro.
-[Pedro] We're not going over there, Sil.

They got here alive. They got in,
and they haven't left yet, right?

-[receptionist] Yes.
-So they're alive and here.

When the victims started to arrive,
it was so chaotic

that we lost track
of the first deaths to come in.

No, but… but the girls got here.

-They weren't the first to arrive--
-Pedro.

This hospital is huge.
It's enormous. They could be anywhere!

[yelling] Pedro,
we need to check the gym right now!

[yelling] No, Sil, we're not going!

We're not going.

We're not.

All right, cuz.

SANTA MARIA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

We couldn't locate Marco
at any of the hospitals.

No. I'm gonna need your help,
okay, 'cause I…

I'm not strong enough
to go check in the gym.

No, I can't. I'm…

That's right. That's right.

Yeah, okay. I'll wait.
I will. All right. Thanks.

JANUARY 27TH, 2013

[medic] Take them to the ICU.

She's going straight in to surgery.

[machines beeping, air hissing]

[doctor] Gauze.

Scalpel.

-[machine beeping rapidly]
-[nurse] Saturation's going down.

Let's give her adrenaline.
Quickly! Quickly!

Gentlemen, our mission here is
to return these children to their parents.

This is the most painful experience
any human could go ever through,

which is why
we have to be strong for them. For them.

With compassion, we can try
to make this identification process

as simple and dignified as possible.

I'm counting on all of you guys.

We have to maintain order
and respect the time each of them needs.

Of course, we cannot forget

that there are people,
many people after them, waiting.

[people clamoring]

-[Silvana] Where's the entrance?
-It's up the ramp.

[woman] Over here!
Over here! They're all in there.

Don't let go of Mama's hand!

[sobbing]

[Silvana] We're all just waiting here!

Pedro!

SANTA MARIA CITY GYMNASIUM

[somber music playing]

Excuse me, please.

Excuse me, please. Thanks.

Please, excuse me. Excuse me.

Excuse me. Oh, sorry. Thank you.

Sil. Here, drink this.

Sil, you have to drink something.

At least sit down
in one of the chairs over there.

Where are the other girls' mothers?

Juliana, go with your mother.
Take this water and get her to drink some.

Go on, Sil.
I'll try to get some information, okay?

Yeah, yeah. Okay.

Yeah, all right, man.

Okay, thanks.

Nothing yet, right?

No, nothing.

[breathing deeply]

-Nothing from Felipinho.
-He must be asleep. He wouldn't hear it.

I've left ten messages!

If you sent him ten or a thousand,
it won't make a difference if he's not…

-Oh God. Look at all of these people here.
-[Felipe] Did Moacyr tell you where he is?

I don't know
how we're going to find him in this mess.

Hello. Are you both parents?

Miss, okay. Was your child present
at the club that night?

No! No, sir. We're looking for a friend.

Ana!

Yes, he was.
Well, it's possible that he was.

-We don't even know that yet--
-Do you have a photo of your son?

A photo?

[Felipe] Show him the photo, Ana.

-Show him.
-[officer] Any photo.

All right. I'll show the volunteers.
You can wait on those chairs over there.

Come on, Ana.

Look, it's Moacyr. Moacyr!

[Ana panting]

[Felipe] What's up?

[panting]

She passed away.

Beatriz has passed. [sobs]

[Ana] Oh no! My dear friend.

[both sobbing]

SANTA MARIA AIRPORT

[on TV] Politicians are arriving
at the gym here in Santa Maria,

including secretaries, congressmen,

the secretary of the Department of Health,
the governor of the state, Tarso Genro,

and even the president herself,
Dilma Rousseff.

[man] I know. I know.

No, Gui is crafty.

There was this one time
he broke down with his Jeep

in the middle of the Australian desert.

I don't know what you're talking about.

He asked me not to tell you
because you'd be worried about it.

He and his friends were stranded
in the middle of nowhere,

without any phone reception, nothing.

Can you believe Gui improvised a hose
out of some camping material?

I don't know how, but our son managed
to get them to a village. He did!

Telma, calm down.

[panting]

-This is our son.
-Yeah.

-He'll figure it out.
-Yeah, he will. He always does.

[cell phone ringing]

-Hello?
-Come on now.

-Yeah, it is.
-Come on.

Just say it!

[panting]

Is he all right? Is everything all right?

They just found Guilherme.

[sobbing] No! No! No!

It can't… It can't be true! [sobbing]

[line ringing]

[woman] Your call has been forwarded…

[officer] We have just received
an updated list of casualties.

I'll announce the victims' names,
and for each name called,

one person should enter the gym
to identify the body.

[vehicle approaching]

Pa.

[sobbing]

[both sobbing]

[crying]

[sobbing] Marco! Oh no.
My son. No, no. Our son. Our boy!

Marco, Marco, Marco.

[somber music playing]

[panting]

What is it, Juliana? What?

-They just found Thaís.
-How did they find her?

They just called her name out loud.

-Wha-- Wha- What do you--
-[Julia] Called Thaís's name.

Wait. Excuse me. Excuse me!

-Excuse me! Where's my daughter?
-I don't know, sir! Calm down!

I'll go in there with you.

Breathe.

[cell phones ringing]

Your daughter, right?

Ma-- Marienne Leal.

[phones continue ringing]

Her name isn't on the list.

It's possible she wasn't identified.

So let's look for her.

[cell phone ringing]

I don't… I don't see her anywhere.
Are you sure she's here?

It could be she's not.

Her name is really not on our list.
Would you want to try the hospitals again?

CALLING MARI'S CELLPHONE

[unsteady breathing]

[cell phone ringing]

[sobbing] Oh!

My little girl! My daughter!

No! No! My poor little girl. [sobbing]

My sweet girl.

My sweet girl.

[sobbing]

What have they done to you, sweetie?

DAD
127 MISSED CALLS

[music fades out]

[low hum]

[inaudible]

[low hum drowning out speech]

[Marco] Ah, well, you know.

The girls from Rio like…
They like philosophy and all that, right?

[Luis chuckles]

So imagine when a guy like me
comes around, cultured, intelligent…

-[Luis] Uh-huh.
-And handsome. Right, Mom?

And humble, right?

-And humble, like Dad. I get around!
-[Ricardo laughing]

But, Marco, do you…

Do you really think
you want to spend some time out there?

Hmm, I'm not sure.

-Still considering it.
-[Lívia] Hmm-mm.

It might be good for me
to meet some new people.

Hmm.

But I'm not sure
that I want to be away from you guys.

If I had my way, well,
you would never leave.

Yeah. Yeah, I know that.

But if you're really interested
and you're not away for too long,

I think your father can handle it.

-[Marco] She got you!
-[Ricardo laughing]

Lívia, don't you worry, babe. This guy
here can't stay away from his mama.

Isn't that right, kiddo?

Yeah. I can't for right now.

But we'll see
if something comes up at the university.

[Telma] Where is he?

[man] I was able to get him cleared
for the funeral home.

But I will still need you
to identify the body.

If you would.

[Telma sobbing]

["Sentinela" by Milton Nascimento
and Nana Caymmi playing]

[sniffles]

[sobbing]

["Sentinela" continues playing]

[breathing heavily]

[sobbing]

[singing in Portuguese continues]

[sobbing]

[sobbing]

[song fades]

38TH PRECINCT

[sniffles, exhales]

It's not my fault, man.

I swear it's not my fault.

Everything was…

ANDERSON ALMEIDA PARGO'S STATEMENT

Everything was good with the nightclub.
It was all up to code.

And I, uh… I know that

the permit had already been requested,
but because of some bureaucratic stuff,

it was late.

And another thing, I didn't…

I never told the security guard
to block the exit, never!

But you did authorize the band
to use fireworks that night, right?

I what?

I…

[sobbing]

Oh God!

How could I authorize
something like that, huh?

How? [sobbing]

How would I imagine
that the band would be so irresponsible

as to light a fire inside my club?

They destroyed my life with this! [sobs]

[inhales, coughs]

One thing that's important to clarify is
the deaths were due to cyanide poisoning.

As the polyurethane ceiling was
setting fire, it was releasing cyanide,

or hydrocyanic gas,

and this gas was the same thing

that was used in the camps
that were set up during the Holocaust.

-Oh my God.
-Shocking, right?

The cyanide reacts with the hemoglobin,

and it blocks the flow of oxygen
through the bloodstream.

-[phone chimes]
-Just a sec.

And it continues to act on the organism,

even if the person is removed
from the gaseous environment,

which is the reason
so many seemed all right,

and then they would die
hours after they had already left.

-Right.
-They were never gonna make it.

Thanks for that. Excuse me.

They skipped town.

-Huh?
-[Rocha] They all did.

The musicians attended the wake
of their bandmate,

and Dedé is in a hospital in Cruz Alta.

A hospital? But he just had
a small cough. He just testified.

In Cruz Alta? He ran away.

Order arrest warrants for everyone.

No doctors can protect them from that.

[sirens wailing]

POLICE

[dramatic music playing]

I told you we should stay.

[car doors close]

CRUZ ALTA HOSPITAL

[inhales deeply, sighs]

WORKS AT KISS CLUB

MAY GOD GIVE YOU STRENGTH
TO GO THROUGH THIS TRAGEDY

LIKE - LIKED

-MURDERER! COWARD!
-YOU SHOULD'VE DIED INSTEAD!

YOU KILLED MY BROTHER, SON OF A BITCH!
I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL

-SON OF A BITCH! VERMIN
-ASSHOLE! GO TO HELL!

YOU'LL ROT IN JAIL! YOU'RE VERMIN

[on TV] The tragedy of the Kiss nightclub
has made the news

all around the world, with news coverage
in countries such as the United States,

England, France, Germany, and many others.

The disaster also made the front pages
of several world-class newspapers,

who all pointed out

the many irregularities
that led to making this event

the deadliest nightclub fire
in Brazil's history.

[sobbing]

PORTO ALEGRE HOSPITAL

[machines beeping]

Look.

If I was burned like this, I…

God forbid, I don't know what I would do.

[man 2] Poor guy.

[on TV] Thales Matteus Baumer,

the club's other owner
who was still at large,

was arrested today.

PORTO ALEGRE HOSPITAL

[breathing heavily]

[somber music playing]

[gasps]

[sobbing]

[woman] Honey? Honey?

Oh, sweetheart!

Oh, honey. Oh, my sweet girl.

Mom, my leg.

[sniffles]

You are here.

And my friends?

[mom] You made it.

-You're alive.
-[sobbing]

You're alive, Grazi.

You hear me?

[solemn music playing]

[TV playing in background]

[sniffles]

[reflective music playing]

-[Lívia sobbing]
-[Ricardo yelling] Son of a bitch!

Look at this, Lívia.
He's a son of a bitch!

-I can't believe this!
-What happened, Ricardo?

Piece of shit! You're a bastard!

The owner of the nightclub, who was
hospitalized with breathing issues

caused by the fire,

made an attempt
to commit suicide this afternoon.

After surviving the attempt
and remaining detained at the hospital,

he granted us an interview.

They didn't say they'd light fireworks.

[sobs]

I would… I would never authorize
something like that.

[sobs]

The best time of my life is over now.

Look at that, Lívia!
Look at that, Lívia, for the love of God!

What is going on, honey?

[dramatic music playing on TV]

[on TV] Two members of the band
that played have been detained.

One of the club's owners
has been hospitalized,

and the police are awaiting his discharge
to arrest him.

The club only had one exit, through which
over 1,000 people attempted to escape.

The burials for the victims has begun,

and City Hall has decreed an official
30 days of mourning in Santa Maria.

[Portella] I requested 30 days
of temporary arrest.

Five was all we got.

And it wasn't the fault of the prosecutor
or the sheriff or the judge.

It's just
the legislation is very specific.

[reporter] Mariana Ribeiro is
on the scene of the tragedy.

[breathes deeply]

They're already releasing her killers.

[Pedro sniffles]

I won't allow it, Sil.

We can't allow it.

We need to unite the parents here.

They took our children's lives.

But they cannot…

They cannot take away our justice.

[priest] And amidst such great losses,

some may be asking,

"Where is God?"

"How can a good and just God

allow such a tragedy to occur?"

"How can a good and just God rob
our sons and daughters of their futures?"

"How can a good and just God
take so much from us

and give so much pain?"

Guilherme,

who loved to see the world,

who had such great curiosity…

I know He only gives us
that which we can withstand,

but even I have found myself wondering
and asking him,

"Why is this a part of Your plan?"

"And how can we use this tragedy

to ultimately make the world
a better place?"

It was a senseless loss.

Pain that does not end.

[priest 1] And I find myself
without answers, except for faith.

Faith that,
though we are surrounded by ruins,

we must find a way
to continue to move forward.

We must try to find purpose,
and we must honor the memories

of those we've lost.

Stay strong.

[unsteady breathing]

I'm Camila. [sniffles]

I was a friend of your son.

My condolences. [sobs]

Gui really was just the best.

He was so sweet.

[sobbing]

May I give you a hug?

[Camila sobs]

[both sobbing]

JUSTICE
IT WAS A MASSACRE OF YOUNG PEOPLE

Yeah, a lot of folks will need
medical care for a very long time,

and, after that,
years of physical therapy.

And also psychological support
for victims and…

She helped me.

Well, that's why I think
that we should set up

an association of family members

and victims of the tragedy,
to help coordinate the medical

and the psychological support,
and… and share information,

and create a memorial.

-I think we should--
-Justice. What I want is justice.

Yes, we all do. We all do.

I know that this is Brazil,

but my daughter's murderers,
our children's murderers have to pay now.

That's right. Marco's killers should pay.

-[Lívia] Yes.
-Justice. That's right.

-Justice.
-[woman] Yeah!

Justice!

-Justice!
-[crowd murmuring]

Justice! What we need is justice!

Justice! Justice!

[crowd] Justice! Yes, justice!

Justice!

[closing theme music playing]
