The Defenders (2010–2011): Season 1, Episode 5 - Nevada v. Sen. Harper - full transcript

Nick and Pete are shocked when their client, a state senator, is charged with the kidnapping and burglary of his mistress in the midst of a divorce case. Meanwhile, Pete defends an attractive cabana girl from accusations of assault and battery.

I'm sorry to just drop in here
without an appointment.

Oh, no, no, no, it's fine.

We are a full service business here.
Really, it's not a problem.

Okay.

Uh, "Grand larceny, battery with intent,
assault."

Tell me in your own words
what happened.

It was the end of the shift.
I was cashing out the bills.

The last one was Cabana 7.

Total dirtbag.

The police report lists
say "Warren Cargill."

Is that the dirtbag
you allegedly assaulted?

He made sexual comments
about my body.

And he grabbed my...

It's okay. What...?

- Like upper, lower?
- Both.

He said I padded his bill
and he wasn't gonna pay.

I grabbed his wallet,
but it was just to get what he owed.

I mean, if somebody skips out on
a check, it comes out of my pocket.

That is wrong on so many levels.

And I only kicked him
to get him off me.

And then the cops came
and arrested me.

Guy touches you inappropriately,

refuses to pay, attacks you,
and then you get charged.

Why are men such pigs?

Never mind. I know why.

It's because
they don't respect women.

It comes from not cherishing
their mothers.

- Oh, thank you.
- You had your breakfast, right?

Oatmeal.
Made me wanna shoot myself.

- You know what's good in oatmeal?
- Yeah. Walnuts.

That's what Jessie used to make
for me.

What's he doing? He knows we gotta
see a senator in a half an hour.

I know.
I told him, but he shushed me.

Ugh, Mr. Scinto paid his bill.

Somebody ought to introduce
Mr. Scinto

to a checking account.

Hey. Come on, come on, come on.

So you took the victim's wallet
to remove the money he owed you.

Yeah. I kind of
snatched it off his lounge.

It's easier if I show you.
Take out your wallet.

So once he told me
he wasn't gonna pay his bill,

I grabbed his wallet

and then I ran.

He attacked me from behind

like this, right?

And then we fell to the ground like...

And he was on top of me like this:

Right. Right. Okay.

Nick.

So sorry to interrupt.

This isn't what it looks like.

Hmm, why do divorce lawyers
always have better stuff than us?

Private elevator, art.

You see that Warhol in reception?

Look at this. Bone.
Check out this sugar.

It's from Belize.
I don't even know where Belize is.

Yeah, well, everything you see in here
was paid for

by broken hearts and bitter tears.

However they get it,
it makes a good cup of coffee.

Why do they even give you china
when you get married?

You never use it.

Then you get divorced
and you get half of it.

Then you don't use that.

Good morning, senator.

- Everything okay?
- Yeah.

I don't know.

This isn't something I ever imagined
for myself.

I guess it's all just started to hit me.

Well, it's never easy,
but once you sign the papers,

you can move on with your life
and Susan too.

Good morning, Mrs. Harper.

Boys.

Please, sit down.
This is the custody agreement

that we all worked on together.

Tom here can verify we made
the changes that you requested.

- Is there a problem?
- I believe my client

has something to say.

All those nights I spend blaming myself
for losing you?

I was too old,
I wasn't interesting enough.

Never entered my mind that you
were screwing your little staffer.

Yeah. I know all about Amy.

- Susan, I'm sorry.
- Uh...

- It just happened.
- Oh, for God's sakes, Clint,

take some responsibility
for once in your life.

Okay, I think this is a great moment
for a time-out.

I don't know who's more pathetic.
Me for being so stupid

or you for being such a clich?.

- Susan.
- Mrs. Harper.

Officer. All previous agreements
are off the table. We're done.

Tom, don't be hasty here.
We can work something...

- This man.
- Senator Harper.

- Yes?
- You've been served

with an order of protection.

What?

Give me that.

It says you're supposed to stay
a hundred yards

away from Susan and the kids.

- And that you threatened to kill her?
- That's a lie.

Oh, and, uh, get ready.

Because we're coming
after everything.

How's that coffee tasting now?

Your Honor,
we'd like to thank the court

for hearing this matter so quickly.

Get to the point, Mr. Morelli.

While we think it's very unfair
that Mrs. Harper is not here,

my client has a right
to face his accuser.

Your Honor, as you can see
from the order of protection,

Mr. Harper is a violent man. My client's
afraid to be in the same room with him.

An affidavit under oath.
It's good enough.

Your Honor, this is not about my client
being a violent man.

This is about Mrs. Harper

looking for payback
from Senator Harper's infidelity.

According to this on the night
of the 13th,

Senator Harper went
to his wife's home in a drunken rage,

and threatened to kill her.

Your Honor,
if Mrs. Harper really feared for her life,

why would she wait a week
to file this order?

Because, Your Honor,
none of this happened.

The separation makes it clear
there's a hostile relationship

between the senator and Mrs. Harper.
The order stands.

Senator, if you come within 100 yards
of your family

or their place of residence,
you will be arrested. Clear?

Say yes.

Yes.

Mr. Morelli,
please approach the bench.

What did I do?

Whatever it was, make sure
she doesn't hold it against me.

- Thanks.
- You're welcome.

- Oh, I'm so sorry.
- Your Honor?

- Your Honor.
- Haven't seen you

in my courtroom in a while.

Well, it's been kind of quiet
around here I guess.

I heard you and Jess separated.
I'm sorry.

Well, it's a temporary thing. I...
She hasn't even filed it.

- You know how that is.
- I do. Been through one.

- Well, I'm not getting divorced.
DESANTl: Of course not.

But look,
I have a lot of experience in this area.

If you'd like some advice,
let's grab a drink sometime.

Your Honor, heh, that is...

That is such a...

Generous offer.

Right now I'm just, uh...

I don't think I'm, um...

Nick, it's just a drink. Think about it.

DESANTl:
Next.

I can't see my boys?

I can't believe Susan
would do this to me.

She's angry and humiliated.

In a week, she calms down,
we get this thing tossed.

Hey, detective. You're looking sharp.

- You go to see Mr. Tony yet?
- Off the rack.

I buy a thousand-dollar suit,
Internal Affairs moves in with me.

Senator, you mind if I ask you
a few questions?

- Sure.
- You have a young woman

on your staff named Amy Dillard,
right?

Yes.

Were you aware
that she didn't come to work

the past two mornings?

No. I haven't been in.

When was the last time
you had contact with her?

Wait, wait, Nick, I got this.

- Three days ago at my office.
- Where are you going with this?

Her friends reported her missing.

And this morning,
we found her car abandoned

at a parking lot near Lake Mead.

Oh, no.

Detective, Amy is a very important
member of my staff.

Now,
I'm prepared to use all my powers

to marshal resources
behind your search, your investigation.

- I want her found.
- I appreciate it.

I'll let you know
if we can use your help.

- All right. Please, keep me in the loop.
- Sure.

Tell me this is not the same Amy

that your wife was screaming about
this morning?

- Yeah.
- How long have you been involved

- with this girl?
- A year.

A year or so.

I met her at the office.
She was an intern from UNLV.

UNLV? How old is she?

- Twenty-two.
- Ugh.

- Now, look, look.
- I know I'm not perfect.

I never claimed to be. But it's over.

All right? I took care of it.

Took care of it how?

We had a little fight.

- I broke up with her.
- When?

- Two nights ago.
- The night she went missing.

Clint,
this is not gonna look good, man.

Look. Now, I would never
do anything to hurt Amy.

You have my word.

You know, 20 years in public office,

I'm not sure the guy knows the truth
when he says it.

I hope the girl shows up soon.

Oh, look. A text from my new client.

Under no circumstance
are you to sleep with her.

Darian Sollaway is a client.
I would never sleep with a client.

- Yeah, right.
- Yes, I've slept with clients,

but it was before they were clients.

Yes, I've slept with clients
after they were clients.

But never, ever, ever would I sleep
with a client

while they were a client.

- Lawyer of the year.
- And for the record,

- they usually ask me out.
Mm-hm.

Hey.

Nick got asked out today.

- Hey, big mouth.
- By who?

Judge Desanti.

I thought she had a life partner?

Are you going?

Well, I don't think so. I'm still married.
I mean, come on.

Ah, come on. What are you
talking about? Of course, he's going.

- What do you mean?
- It's the perfect practice date.

He already knows her.
They have the law in common.

If he gets jammed up on small talk,
he could fall back on the legal stuff.

What if he's not ready, Pete?

He'll never be ready.
He needs a push.

Wait, he's standing right here.

Nick, it's a win-win, okay?

Things go well,
we have a judge in our pocket.

You screw it up, she's gotta
recuse herself from our cases.

She's a prosecutor's judge.
We're golden.

I don't even know you anymore.

Nick?

He's not ready.

Oh, he's ready.

Next case is 7-6456,
Nevada v. Darian Sollaway.

"Grand larceny, battery with intent
and assault."

All right, we're up.
Remember to breathe.

And when I look at you,
just say "not guilty."

Pete Kaczmarek representing
Ms. Sollaway, Your Honor.

Assistant District Attorney Boyd Sneed
for the state.

Good morning, counselors.

Your Honor,
we'd like to file an amended complaint

to include the charge of assault
and battery with a weapon.

- What?
- May I approach?

Let the record reflect

that I am serving Mr. Kaczmarek
and his client in open court.

When did this become
battery with a weapon?

When the guy she kicked was rushed
to the hospital with internal bleeding.

How do you plead, Ms. Sollaway?

Uh, the court's indulgence

for just one more moment,
Your Honor.

What deadly weapon?
It was a shoe.

Oh, no. We are wearing shoes.
This?

This is a deadly weapon.

No more time. I want a plea.

Not guilty, Your Honor.

Good for you.

What about her?

Not guilty.

- Nick. Come here. Check this out.
- What?

In our top story,
police sources confirm.

State Senator Clint Harper is
being sought as a person of interest

in connection with the disappearance
of one of his staffers.

- Ugh, cripes.
- Wait, it gets worse.

Amy Dillard's abandoned car was
found in a Lake Mead area parking lot

after she was reported missing
by friends two days ago.

This video of Senator Harper
was taken last night

less than a block
from the girl's home.

That's a dashboard cam video
from a cop car.

Kidnapping and burglary
charges are rumored to be pending.

Bright side: The worse thing
they're charging is kidnapping.

Yeah. Right up till they find a body.

Senator, this is Nick Morelli.
I need to talk to you.

Where are you?

Hank.

- You should have called me.
- What are you talking about?

I'm talking about
one of your coppers

sold a cruiser video
to the highest bidder.

It wasn't one of my coppers.
You know where the senator is?

Because he's not at home
and he's not at work.

Why? You were following him.
What the hell, did you lose him, Hank?

- Tell him to come in.
- Detective Hank.

I need to know
what was in that dumpster.

Come on,
you owe me on this cruiser video.

What did you find?

Love letters, photos
and a mix CD he made her.

A mix CD?
Come on, you're kidding me.

- No.
- Tell me Supertramp wasn't on it.

There was also a bloody towel, Nick.

Full of her blood.

We searched the apartment
this morning.

There were signs of a fight.

Broken table, blood on the glass,
blood on the floor.

His prints are everywhere.

I have a warrant
for the senator's arrest.

I gotta take this.

Yeah?

Don't move.

Don't use your phone.
I'll call you back.

What was that math again?

You hide ten miles out of town,
you're innocent.

Seventy-five miles,
there's a body in your trunk.

Don't touch it.

What am I gonna do?

You're gonna sit down
and start telling the damn truth.

How is it hotter in here
than out there?

Sit down.

Now, tell us the whole story
that happened that night with Amy.

And we even think
that you're lying for one second,

you're gonna be looking
for new lawyers.

I went over to the condo

to tell Amy that the divorce
was about to be finalized.

We were gonna really be together.

And she broke up with me.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, you told us
that you broke up with her.

I lied, okay?

It was humiliating.

Why did she end it?

She said she made a mistake.

I wanted to work it out.

But she told me to leave and, um...

Things escalated.

You sure you want the whole story?

Escalated how?

I asked her
if there was somebody else.

I mean, why else would she change
her feelings overnight?

Well,
she started to walk away from me,

so I grabbed her arm.

She pulled away.

Fell onto the glass table.

Cut herself.

Now,
I tried to take her to the hospital.

I tried to get her to go.

I pulled her all the way to the door,
she just pushed me away

and screamed at me to get out.

So I did.

Poor, sad Clint.

You had a great life.

You had a wife that loves you,
two great kids.

You threw it all away?

- Nick, come on.
- For what?

- Nick.
- Something different?

Not better, just different.

I never meant to hurt anyone.

Those people didn't even cross
your mind?

Nick, come on.

You don't have to tell me.

I walked into this all on my own.

All right.

Give me your car keys
and your cell phone.

- Where are you going?
- I'm going to a place that has a bar

and air conditioning that works.
Come on.

Tommy,
work with me a little bit here.

Under the right circumstance,
I'm sure the senator has got it coming.

Yeah. The circumstance of the cops
putting him in cuffs.

All I'm asking is handle him
with a little restraint.

- What does that mean?
- It means that those cops

that leaked that video
already polluted the jury pool.

You don't have to perp-walk him
down the strip.

The longer he stays out,
the guiltier he looks.

The longer you don't find him,
the dumber the state looks.

- Come on, work with me a little bit...
- All right. I'll tell you what.

You get him to Metro
at 9 a.m. tomorrow,

I'll give you self-surrender
through a low visibility entrance.

- No press.
- I can't control that.

Come on, you're the puppet master.
What kind of wingspan is that?

- Did you play basketball?
- Football. Princeton, all Ivy.

Anything else you wanna know?

Listen, how about bail?
Fifty thousand, I'm thinking.

- No. I'm thinking half a million.
- Half a million? You're insane.

This is a three-term state senator.

No priors, no records.
With strong ties to the community.

Who skipped town.

He went on vacation.

Tommy, Tommy.
The guy is going through a divorce.

His assets are frozen.

- Three-fifty.
- Two-fifty.

- Four hundred.
- Two-fifty.

- Five hundred.
- Two-fifty... Three-fifty is fine.

Offer expires at 9:01.

Darian grabbed the guy's wallet.
That's not in dispute.

So we're going to have to eat it
on larceny.

Agreed.
But she's still looking at two to ten

for the battery with intent
and two to ten for the deadly weapon.

Oh, but the complainant
was a known ass-grabber.

Let's make a case for self-defense.

She used reasonable force.

Boring.

Judge Reyes is a law nerd.
Normal case law puts him to sleep.

If we don't find a way
that piques his interest,

he's gonna rule on autopilot

and Darian is gonna go to jail
for a long time.

Uh, keep looking.

Did you know that Darian has had
three different jobs this past year?

Well, these day clubs
are constantly poaching pretty girls

from each other.
I'm sure Darian gets a lot of offers.

Huh.

- What?
- You just seem a little overly invested

in this client.

I'm providing her
with a vigorous defense.

Which is my job.

You sure it's not a rebound thing?

What, from Meredith?

Heh, please.
That was purely physical.

This is business.
I know the difference.

Whatever you say.

Defrauding an innkeeper.

- What?
- The guy that Darian attacked

was trying to skip out on his bill,
260-something dollars.

Which makes it a class-D felony.

So maybe we don't have to eat it
on the larceny.

The state submits
Exhibits 37 through 39.

Proceed.

The victim, Warren Cargill,
after the attack.

The defendant, who resisted arrest
and her deadly weapon,

which punctured the victim's lung.

I'm inclined to rule
that the stiletto was a deadly weapon,

and that it was used in a manner

capable of causing
substantial bodily harm.

We believe
that the arresting officer's testimony

as well as the exhibits prove

that there is more than enough
probable cause

to proceed against the defendant
on all four counts.

Thank you, Your Honor.

Mr. Kaczmarek,
do you wish to make a statement

- before I rule?
- May it please the court...

Firstly, we respectfully request
a formal inquiry

as to why the state
has not filed charges

against Mr. Cargill

- for defrauding an innkeeper?
- Objection.

This hearing isn't about Mr. Cargill,
Your Honor.

- It should be.
- Sustained.

Interesting argument,
Mr. Kaczmarek.

- Let's stay with the case at bench.
- Yes, Your Honor.

With regard to the count
of battery with a deadly weapon,

if you look at the criminal code
in its totality,

you'll see that the charge constitutes
cruel and unusual punishment,

which violates my client's
eighth amendment rights.

- How so?
- Ms. Sollaway was attacked

by a man who's a half a foot taller
than her, more than twice her weight.

She feared for her life,
so she kicked him.

Per the statute,
her actions fit squarely

into the very definition
of justifiable homicide.

Let me get this straight.

You're arguing
that if the victim had died,

Ms. Sollaway would have
a valid defense of justifiable homicide.

And the fact that he lived
shouldn't change that?

- Exactly.
- Oh, this is ridiculous, Your Honor.

I find insufficient evidence
to let this proceed

on the count of battery
with intent to commit

as well as counts two and three

assault and battery
with a deadly weapon.

Don't pop the champagne cork yet,
Mr. Kaczmarek.

I do, however, find sufficient evidence
on the count of grand larceny.

Gentlemen, approach the bench
and work out a deal. Now.

Thirty days probation, no restitution.

Whoa, grand larceny and assault.

Three months in jail
and full restitution.

Mr. Sneed, let's see if you're smarter
than a fifth grader.

Who already dismissed
the assault charges?

You did, Your Honor.

Then accept his plea
and get out of my court.

Case dismissed
pending final review of the signed plea.

So is it illegal for a client
to ask her lawyer out to dinner?

No. But it is unethical
for the lawyer to accept.

Good news is
I am no longer your lawyer.

Come on.

Hey, Your Honor...

Senator, you might wanna give me
your valuables.

I'm just gonna put them in a paper bag
in Booking and...

That could technically be considered
evidence, Morelli.

Give me the ring.

I appreciate everything you've done
for me.

Okay, sir.

Here we go.

How many ways can I say this?

I am not putting my children's home up
as collateral so he can get out of jail.

I know this is hard,

but please try to separate your anger
from what's right.

What's right? Here's what's right.

Help pay your husband's way through
law school and three elections.

Then while he's surrounding himself
with groupies and yes men,

you stay at home with the kids
and do everything

to make the marriage work.
If he needs bail money so badly,

tell him to use his slut's condo
for collateral.

Why did Susan Harper tell us
to use Amy's apartment as collateral?

Well, maybe she thought he bought it
for her.

Hmm, I checked
the assessor's office.

Amy's parents bought that condo
for her.

- Okay.
- But if Susan Harper is just finding out

about the affair,
how does she know where Amy lived?

Maybe she hired an investigator?

You know, who followed him?

Lots of people do that.

Which is why I went over to the condo
and asked around.

Turns out a couple of her neighbors
heard the fight break out

between the senator and Amy.

Saw him leave
and then saw something else.

- Is it bad?
- Not for us, my friend.

Her next door neighbor saw Amy
arguing with a woman.

I showed them a picture
of Susan Harper and they ID'd her.

This was after Clint left?

Yes. Susan went inside
and they never saw Amy again.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,
I submit to you

that Senator Harper and Mrs. Harper
both had motive, both had opportunity.

But the last person
to see Amy Dillard alive

was Susan Harper, not the senator.

That is your reasonable doubt.

Hey, Zoey.

Hang on.

All right, just, uh...

Just give them a call and tell them
I'm running 15 minutes late, okay?

No. You call them.

All right. Okay. Gotcha.

Hold on one second.

Okay.

All right, shoot.

All right, let me call you in a little bit.
Okay.

Bye.

What you doing, handsome?

Hey.

I, uh...

I gotta jet. I got a deposition.
But, um, I will call you. Okay?

Or maybe you can come by
and see me at my new job.

- Oh, you, uh, got a new job already?
- Yeah.

Concierge at the Posh.
They didn't care about what happened

at the Moroccan.
They said I was a steal.

Huh.

They sure don't know what they got.

That is great, Darian.

No.

That was great.

Did you talk to Susan
about the bail?

Uh, there's been a development.

What?

Cops found another suspect
in Amy's disappearance.

That's great. Who is it?

Susan.

- Susan?
- Yeah.

Neighbors saw her
go into the apartment after you left.

Wait a minute.

Susan was at Amy's?

They found fingerprints.

Did they arrest her?

No, not yet.

Hey, senator, talk to me here, okay?

Do you really think Susan is capable
of killing Amy?

No. I've known Susan
for over 20 years.

No.

People change.

- I changed her.
- No, don't go there.

You're responsible for the affair.

You are not responsible
for what Susan

may or may not have done about it.

Okay.

Wait it out.

Darian is a thief, Nick.

A pro. Are you listening
to what I'm telling you?

Yeah, yeah, I'm listening to you.

- Sure it was a credit card skimmer?
- Yes.

I saw it with my own eyes.

- It was hand-held.
- Yeah?

And the guy that was, uh,
chasing her,

she was trying to get the key card,
not the cash?

I think the guy caught her
going through his wallet.

Only true part of her story is she
didn't count on the guy attacking her.

And you suspect
she's about to rob somebody else?

Darian jumps from job to job.

Casino to casino,
convention to convention.

Now she's working at the Posh.

They got this big
sports memorabilia thing.

And she's planning to steal
a Super Bowl ring

- from some guy's room.
- Super Bowl ring?

Is it an '85
Chicago Bears Super Bowl ring?

- I'll make an offer on it.
- You are not helping.

I'm just gonna call Detective Smith.

He'll be the most discreet...

No, no, no, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hold on there, cowboy.

Is she still your client?

She took a misdemeanor plea
this afternoon.

Well, did you execute the plea?

Tomorrow.

Well, then, you are still her lawyer.

And you know what?
All that incriminating evidence you got,

privileged information.

And you slept with a client!

I told you not to do that.
Here. Right here, right here.

"Rule 1.6. Confidentiality
of communication. A lawyer

shall not reveal information
relating to the representation of a client

unless the client gives
informed consent. Blah, blah, blah.

He believes necessary to prevent
certain death, yadda yadda yadda.

In short,
you shall not snitch on Darian.

- Sorry to interrupt.
- Nick, you have dinner

with Judge Desanti in 30 minutes.

I'm so proud of you.

What?

It was just a drink.

And I didn't even say yes.

- I had Zoey make the date for you.
- Zoey.

You work for me.
You don't work for him.

I'm the one that signs the checks.
Zoey.

- Nick... Nick.
- No.

- Pete.
- Nick, you gotta do this.

Come on, Pete, I can't do this.

Ugh, if I go on a date like this, I, uh...

All I'll think about
is Jess the whole time.

You always worry about Jess.

It's just one dinner
with a hot, smart woman.

Nick, you deserve this.

- Don't ever do this to me again.
- Yes. Yes.

Now, ahem,
let me give you some advice.

I don't need advice.

I'm not 12 years old.
I know how to date.

When was the last date you went on?
Your senior prom with Jess?

No, no. We had some time apart
before we got married.

I played the field.
I went out with girls.

Yeah. Cocktail waitresses
from another century.

- Please.
- This is a judge.

An educated woman
who lives in this world.

And times have changed.

Ahem, first,
women want you to open doors.

Pay for dinner

and take charge now.

Pete, that is so sexist.

Alphas are back, baby.

Really?

I like that.

Okay, Pete.

But I do this under official protest.

- Nick, give me your phone.
- I'll turn it off. I'll turn it off.

Nick, one more thing.

Stop it!

So my paralegal
files a notice of erotica

instead of a notice of errata.

- No.
- Yes.

In federal court.
They posted it all over the courthouse.

That's when I decided
it was time to become a judge.

- That is so funny.
DESANTl: Hmm.

You know, uh,
this morning when I went into work,

uh, on my desk, there were, like,
a bunch of these green sticky notes.

- Right.
- My girl usually gives me pink ones.

Like the little heart ones and stuff.

That's where she puts
her messages on, anyhoo.

Well, I got green,
and I usually get pink,

so I figure
she just ran out of the green, right?

So I read the message,

- and it says "call your grandfather."
- Mm-hm.

Well,
my grandfathers are both dead.

One died of a stroke

and one had this hereditary
kidney disorder.

So...

I'm figuring
that, you know, the message, uh...

The message wasn't for me.
I think it was, uh...

You know,
it's not as funny of a story as...

Nick,
you don't have to work that hard.

I can see it's very stressful for you.

It really is. It really is.

I'm so sorry.

- I'm really sorry.
- There's nothing to be sorry about.

- I get it.
- Ugh.

My husband left me six years ago.

Took me nine months to even
think about going out on a date.

By my calculations,
you're way ahead of the game.

I don't know.

Call me nuts or in denial.

Until somebody hands me
that paper,

I really believe Jess and I
are just taking some time off.

Can I ask you
if you've moved out of the house yet?

Yeah. Two months.

I've learned a couple of things
on the family court bench.

Nine out of ten times,
when one spouse has moved out,

it's over.

Yeah, I know.

Hey. I'm looking for Nick.

Hey, come on.

Don't beat yourself up too much.
Take it from me.

One of the best things
about being single:

You have a lot more sex.

- Really?
- Psst.

Is that your law partner?

Yeah. He's out past curfew.

DESANTl: Mr. Kaczmarek,
nice of you to play wingman.

What are you doing here?

Your Honor,
I'm so sorry to interrupt your date,

- but, uh, Nick, we've got an emergency.
- It can wait.

Uh, no, it can't, heh.

Take care of it, partner.

You don't want me to handle this one,
partner.

I'm so sorry, Your Honor.

You mind if I borrow Nick
for just one minute?

She's a judge. Okay?
She can hear anything.

- Cole just called.
- Right.

Senator Harper confessed.

To what?

Murder. And based on the bloody towel
they found at the scene,

they're gonna argue
that he tortured Amy before killing her.

I'm not sure.

I wasn't thinking straight.
It was dark. Uh...

It could be here. I don't know.

Take it easy, senator.

What's done is done.
I just wanna make sure

that Amy's family
can bury their daughter.

That's all. Take your time.

Maybe, uh, over on the other side.

It's like watching a man
commit public suicide.

Yeah. No, save your shoes.

You know what he's figuring?

If he takes the fall,

at least his kids have a mom.

A killer mom.

I don't know if I believe that.

He does.

This is such a great surprise.

Unfortunately, I have to go to work.

Darian, I know about the ring.

I know you took the job at the Posh
because of the auction tomorrow.

I wanna tell you as your lawyer
and as your friend,

you gotta stop this now.

I really like you, Pete.

- You're a lot of fun.
- What I am is your lawyer...

Come on.

You're better than this.

No, I'm not.

And neither are you.

You defend rapists and murderers.

And I only steal from rich people
with lots of insurance.

Darian, stop.

I'm sorry.

Look, why don't we start over?

We're good together, Pete.

Don't blow it.

You go through with this,
I'm gonna turn you in.

And I'll have you disbarred.

Nice.

Goodbye, Pete.

- Good morning.
- How are you doing today?

Hey, Jenny. Are you good?

- I have nothing to say.
- Mrs. Harper.

Just call my lawyers.

Did you know that Clint
confessed to killing Amy Dillard?

- What does this have to do with me?
- Well, he thinks you did it.

And he's trying to protect you.

You really want him to rot in prison
out of spite?

Well, he did it.

You don't think that.

The man I married
wouldn't hurt anyone.

But that man
wouldn't have cheated on me.

Well, you got nailed, didn't you?

You didn't see it coming.

Yeah.

Like a car wreck, you know.

Driving along this marriage,

things are going good and...

Going to school with the kids,
weekends together.

And then all of a sudden, bam.

Tell you it's over.

Where were the flags?

What did I miss?

We know you were at Amy's house
that night, Mrs. Harper.

Is there anything you can tell us
that will help the senator?

I followed Clint that night.

I wanted to tear Amy to pieces.

But when she opened the door,

I found this scared little girl.
Hysterical, apologizing.

She kept saying how she and Clint
had destroyed four lives

and that they deserved to suffer.

I ended up putting my arms around her
and trying to calm her down.

Ironic, isn't it?

And then I left.

And that's all.

Three days ago, I thought
that divorce was the worst thing

that could ever happen to my family.

Four lives?

She said Clint and Amy had destroyed
four lives.

That's Susan, the two boys...

And who's the fourth?

I got it. I win.

Perry Cronin. Amy's ex-fianc?.

Amy's page was privacy-protected,
but I could access her friend list.

I found her high school BFF

who happens to have hundreds
of photos posted.

I searched Amy's name
and this came up.

A photo of her and Perry
from a year ago

when they were engaged.

She broke off the engagement
to be with the senator.

- Does he have a page, an address?
- I'm working on it.

- Right-click it, see if it's GeoTagged.
- GeoTagged?

Well, when you take a picture
with an iPhone or a digital camera,

most times it records
the latitude and longitude.

Yeah, pfft, you didn't know that?

You didn't know it either.
This information?

Mega data.

Perry's trailer is...

Lake Mead.
That's where they found Amy's car.

- After this, we're even, Morelli.
- We'll see.

You'll see from the car.

- You get out, I gotta arrest you.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know the drill.

Here we go.

L.V.P.D.

There's the boyfriend.

It's Amy.

How about that?

The senator wasn't lying.

- Well, how about that?
- Heh.

They thought Clint killed me?

Well, you did have a fight
and disappear suddenly,

and you didn't come forward
when he got charged.

We don't have radio or TV up here.
I didn't know.

Look, I just came up here
to apologize to Perry.

Well, maybe next time
you'll leave a note.

Is there anything that I can do
to help Clint?

Yes. Get back to Vegas
and be alive when you get there.

- All right?
- All right.

- Hey.
- Hey, Nick.

Senator, you're a free man.

Thank you.

But listen, I don't understand.
Did Amy do this on purpose?

No. She wanted to stay
out of the spotlight. Lick her wounds.

She had no idea what was going on.

- Is she okay?
- Yeah.

She's gonna be fine
once she gets out of Vegas.

When can I see my kids?

Whenever you want.
Susan lifted the restraining order.

I guess I have to say a word or two.

Ah, that's your call, senator.

For the first time I can remember,

- I don't know what to say to them.
- Huh.

You'll figure it out.

Senator...

You think he'll use this
to get re-elected?

Those aren't the votes
he's worried about.

I'd love to stick around,
but I gotta hit that auction,

warn that guy about Darian.

You mean about this ring?

- Oh, Nicky.
- Ha, ha.

'85 Bears.
Where in the hell did you get that?

I sent Zoey down
to get it at the presale.

I... This is Singletary's ring
that he donated to charity.

- Cool, right? Easy with that.
- I want to try it on.

Yeah, baby. Look at that.
Looks good, right?

Not on your girly skinny little fingers.

- Give me that or I'll go Ditka on you.
- Nice, Nicky. Way to ruin a moment.

You happy?

Feels like victory.

Bear down.

Chicago Bears

Victory

What I am proposing is a simple
shared custody agreement.

Hell, no.

You get the ring for home games
and I get it

- when the Bears are on the road.
- I paid for this ring with my money.

It's a protected asset.

- It's not a shared anything.
- Selfish, Nick. Selfish.

Nick, Darian left me a note.

When was she here?

I don't know.

"Pete, thank you for caring so much.
I'm sorry about how it ended.

I hope you don't mind,
but I took a souvenir

to lessen the sting of losing you.

Love always, Darian."

Pete!
