The Curse of Oak Island (2014–…): Season 3, Episode 12 - Voices from Below - full transcript

Rick and Marty find the ark of the covenant along with Atlantis the holy grail

Tonight on the curse of Oak Island we're

back from the money pit and we hit a

cabin it's a piece of metal any idea

what it is it looks like a little tiny

Oak Island

John chatter is confident he's gonna go

down at the bottom it's not if we can do

it is how do we do

you at the bottom of the south

there is an island in the North Atlantic

where people have been looking for an

incredible treasure for more than 200

years so far they have found bits of

gold chain a stone slab with strange

symbols carved into it

a 17th century Spanish

today six men have died trying to solve

the mystery

according to legend

to die before the treasure can be found

on Oak Island the progress gained by a

warm summer is rapidly giving way to the

harsh uncertainties of fall and another

season of both promise and progress is

rapidly coming to an end

it is this reality that time is running

out which confronts brothers Rick and

Marty lagina each and every day it is a

reality

they and their partners refuse to accept

as they continue to search the island

for the clues that will help them solve

on 220 year old mystery

yeah you're fun because that much with

both his brother and Craig tester away

on business Rick lagina is determined to

make the most out of the few weeks he

has left

these guys to rig up and yeah start

putting steel in there go

why should you be optimistic about the

lagina brothers cuz of Rick lagina she's

not gonna give up

he's not gonna give up he's smart he's

capable and he's dedicated and he's

intense

I've been on this rollercoaster ride

autopilot for eight years now and it's

important to persevere and and to move

forward in the solidus hey guys

John Hart oh yeah one week ago in a

last-ditch effort to find a diver who

can get to the bottom of borehole 10x

Rick and his brother Marty arranged for

John Chatterton to come to Oak Island a

world-renowned diver chatter dan has

made numerous deepwater discoveries and

faced some of the most dangerous

conditions imaginable or at least as far

as is humanly bus

we can't wait to if this started awesome

now on the eve of the dive that may

finally provide some much hope for

answers about 10x Rick and members of

his team are making one more attempt to

also get information from the place

where the Oak Island treasure hunt began

the money pit that's a big drill here

you know today should be exciting

Charles Barkhouse the guy who knows

everything about Oak Island his pick

spot in the money pit area he's put X on

the drum just based on my research that

I've done I've never believed that the

money pit was where a lot of people

claim it to be I think it's to the

northwest but this is a spotted thing

one year ago Rick Craig tester and Dave

Blankenship located what they believe to

be the original money pit

after finding evidence of a mysterious

wooden vault that was first discovered

by treasure hunters William Chappell and

Frederick Blair in 1897 definitely got

wood

that's definitely clay

that's what they found the top of the

mall

today they will be drilling at a spot

just north of last year's drill site a

spot that Oak Island historian Charles

Barkhouse believes is not just near the

money pit but the actual place where the

Oak Island treasure was buried what

makes you so sure it's here I don't know

David you know there's no reference

point you can take it off on this whole

topography has changed right this was

all bulldozed up here right so it's the

belief the feeling just everything that

I've looked at over

I just feel it's over this way

because the area is highly susceptible

to flooding and the ground is unstable

due to centuries of digging and

tunneling any full-scale effort to

excavate the money pit down to a depth

of approximately 150 feet is estimated

to cost in the millions of dollars and

so far Rick's brother Marty and their

partners have been reluctant to invest

that kind of money unless solid evidence

can be found that such a huge financial

effort would be worth it

total depth we're talking 200 we're

looking for a void and or whatever let's

find something let's do it today let's

make today to the day Rick is going to

try and find evidence of the original

money pit by using a drilling system

called a cyclone reverse circulation or

cyclone drilling is a method that uses a

pneumatic piston or hammer which forces

air into a hole while water is

simultaneously pumped in any objects and

possible treasure that are in the hole

are then forced up to the surface and

collected in a sample bag

there's a big sea wood could this be

evidence of another mysterious wooden

vault similar to the one that Rick and

his partners discovered last year

Charles comes up with this piece of wood

dan is long told me black wood

foul-smelling is probably really really

old

could it be original works

researcher funnel could be trimming from

the money pit could be could be could be

save this Rick is determined to find

something more in the drill hole than

just old bits of wood really what we're

looking for is evidence of

Madeline's really would

a great thing he knows all too well the

tricks that Oak Island likes to play on

would-be treasure hunters and he has

also invested too much time money and

sweat to walk away with nothing more

than a few chips of wood from what could

be an old searcher tunnel

just ask Cody they're gonna go down with

all casing because we're

stand up a couple things drill faster

you'll be able

figure out if he actually does hit a

void where the top is where the bottom

might be pull the rods up to worry about

driving the casing pass

get down about 160 feet and we hit

bedrock no that's disappointing but it's

typical Oak Island I'm thinking is that

the end of the story there's no point in

advancing casing through through Rock

the holes are gonna stand up we had

committed to 200 feet so we decided okay

let's just drill all we're looking for

are the returns and we'll the far fall

into a point that's it it should be very

simple

the colors going against our

causes a surge is like done

a seven foot drop 160 feet deep inside

the money pit when the mysterious wooden

vault was first discovered by William

Chappell and Frederick Blair in 1897

their records indicated that it was

approximately 7 feet high due to the

fact that their drill bits met with no

resistance and turned up no debris for

that amount of depth it appeared the

vault had been covered in a type of

concrete and then sealed with clay and

it was also in this vault where one of

the drill bits recovered a small

fragment of paper with writing on it

unfortunately shortly after the wooden

vault was discovered efforts to dig down

and retrieve it were plagued by constant

flooding and the operation was abandoned

due to lack of mine

prior 178 178 so they draw from 171

to 178 and still dropping it's still

dropping

he said it drops from 171 to 178

could this really be proof that what

Rick and his partners have discovered is

another wooden vault located even deeper

than the so-called Chappell vault and if

so what is inside it

you

drilling in the area of the money pit

Rick lagina along with Charles Barkhouse

and Dave Blankenship have just located a

large board 171 feet deep below the

surface of Oak Island

as I left that blow for a second cause

if there's any larger man itself in my

fuck

does that mean we hit the cavity or what

see how far she cops

we hit a cavity I mean Jordan says you

know first at 7 feet the bars falling

you know you're watching the bar and

it's going down and down and down and

down

192 to bottom

71 to 192

twenty-one feet

a 21-foot deep cavity 171 feet

underground could this actually be

evidence of a man-made treasure chamber

deep within Oak Island

what's a 21-foot hi cavity doing below

the anhydrate no indication of what it

may or may not be

I can't drill the bottom because there's

too much blood or that air hammer won't

cycle I think we should pull off change

bits to a trichome drill ass up in that

hole fires will drill another 20 feet

that way debris can go down into a stop

it'll give it a place to go to

so we're sifting through the returns in

the trailer I'll be honest I'm looking

for a little round coin I'll get this

clean suits

I'm thinking just one just one time just

one just something

having accumulated more wood and muddy

sediment from the cyclone extractor

Rickman Charles and Dave Blankenship

prepared one loaded into the backhoe to

be scanned for any important evidence

sand and clay heavy it is heavier to

save the returns I mean that's always

appropriate that you want to know what

you drill through

just up the hill from the money pit dave

blankenship dumps the sediment on a hard

flat ground so that it can be scanned

with a metal detector

using the mine lab 3030 metal detector

jack begley begins scanning over the

sediment to see if any metallic objects

or artifacts may have come from the

large underground void

shortly after I start detecting I get a

a hit

after getting a hit indicating the

presence of a non-ferrous or possibly

precious metal Jack then uses a handheld

metal detector known as a pin pointer to

precisely isolate the object

I've washed it off with water and looked

at it in my hand and went well this is

not natural this is absolutely not

natural and it's not iron as Jack found

an important clue a metallic object that

came out of a large void 171 feet deep

inside the money pit

okay look what I found over there it's

from your tailings pile it's a piece of

metal any idea what it is not real it's

not real heavy what's that in the center

okay

what's those three marks down at the

bottom see the three vertical marks

right there see look three slashes we're

down here on this end there's three

vertical slashes right I just find it

very true it looks like Oak Island like

a little tiny Oak Island what what does

it mean if you look here see the sheen

there yeah and then there's something

like it's overlay right a metal object

and shaped like Oak Island look here

could it be part of a larger ancient

artifact or is it possible evidence of

treasure

look here look on this side and then

look look on edge rate this is one of

those situations where try to figure it

out until we get a definitive answer

this is what it is or this is what it

isn't and it was intriguing enough it

was odd enough that we thought we would

have to see what this thing's all about

every clue is worth pursuing

exactly call it a day

look that's it's the money pit there

supposed to be a vault treasure call it

what you will if that doesn't beckon you

forward

if you can't listen to that beacon call

it what are we doing think we'll do a

little bit more discussion about this

one I am getting to the bottom of that I

don't care what it costs

after finding a new piece of evidence

and from a 21-foot void found deep

inside the money pit Rick Marty and

their partners are once again excited by

the prospect of an incredible

breakthrough but before they can go any

farther or dig any deeper there is yet

another mystery they need to solve

and like the money pit it also lies deep

underground

you

for me it's it's always a big deal to

remember the past the boat Oak Island so

I want to thank you for coming

while the team awaits the arrival of

diver John Chatterton Rick lagina is

bringing a special visitor to the island

at 91 years of age Lynn Walsh is the

granddaughter of Maynard Kaiser the man

who in 1897 became the second victim of

the infamous Oak Island curse when he

fell to his death while working inside

the money pit

and joining her or her niece Sally

Kaiser and her friend Blair I admit I

don't know much about the tragedy that

day tragedy happened I asked me he was

around 47

what do you recall from your family

stories that he was looking for Captain

Kidd's treasure and then of course we

learned that it could be other things

born in Canada

Maynard Kaiser was a former officer in

the British military in the late 1800s

he brought his wife and three children

to Nova Scotia in hopes of providing a

new and prosperous life for them after

hearing the rumors about a mysterious

pirate treasure buried on Oak Island

Kaiser eagerly joined the oak island

treasure company led by Frederick Blair

but on March 26th 1897 after a long day

of working in the money pit the Kaiser

was being lifted out when a cable

suddenly snapped

causing him to fall to his death more

than 100 feet down to the bottom of the

shaft

we're now coming to the money pit itself

so the area he would have been working

in would have been a shaft about 12 feet

in diameter it's not at all like I

expected what were your expectations

well I don't know a great big hole in

there but the thought was that maybe we

would be able to get on Oak Island and

see the area and that was all I expected

our grandfather

spotty was never recovered or never

found

never found is it possible that Maynard

kaisers bodies was not recovered after

his fatal fall down to the bottom of the

money pit and if so could it still be

down there after more than 100 years

we heard about how the water came back

in you know because they thought well

maybe his body washed it with the water

so that was the mystery to them the

water uh-huh yeah comes from over there

I see a tunnel from Smith's Cove into

the money pit introduced for the sole

reason everyone believes protecting them

exactly but that begs the question is

there a backdoor a backdoor is it

possible that Maynard kaisers body was

washed out of the money pit into one of

the flood tunnels deep beneath Oak

Island and if so could there be a

connection between Maynard kaisers

missing remains and the mysterious dead

body that supposedly lies just 180 feet

away at the bottom of 10-x

B his grave here and that too is

something that you feel differently

about and at least this emptiness yeah

they can see but I understand there is a

memorial there is and you know I'd love

to take you down to it it's right across

the causeway that would be fine

what happened I was surprised how little

information there is about that incident

and thus I understand Lin's

frustration

makes it real you know the date is

interesting too in 1995 to commemorate

the two hundred year anniversary of the

Oak Island treasure hunt dan Blankenship

placed this memorial at the entrance to

the island he wanted to pay respect to

the six men who paid the ultimate price

while in pursuit of an incredible dream

to me in a small way it personalizes the

story of Oak Island and it brings us

some closure

for her it was personal and just as

important as what we're trying to do and

I felt a little emotional connection to

that

it's important to her thus we'll make it

important to us it's not over yet I

commit to you that we will pursue this

that's excellent

well I didn't ever think I'd see it but

I'm glad to see this this is nice we

hope that we can change when it says the

oak island quest will be the Oak Island

solution and we will pursue trying to

figure out what really happened I'm in

trouble me from my forebears work you

know I've been lost and in a pit on a

strange Island I'd want answers to and I

want to thank you all for coming

we're the ones that are pre-shared truly

I get a hug

I truly appreciate everything that

you've done to help us to at least

anticipate an answer we'll do our very

best

you

John our you are indeed a sight for sore

eyes

well you know this is a fascinating dive

project it's right up our alley

challenging renowned diver John

Chatterton along with his business

partner and dive supervisor Howard

Ehrenburg have finally arrived on Oak

Island if anybody can get us answers to

the long sought-after question of what's

in the bottom of 10x we believe that you

guys are gonna be able to do it for us

putting a dive together like this is

literally like solving a puzzle it's not

if we can do it it's how do we do it

that I like to hear but it's the truth

is it's it's how and you know from our

collective experience we've got the

experience we've got the equipment we've

got the education we've got the right

guys right team and we're gonna get down

there

those are the best words we've heard in

a long time right David yep

with over 30 years of experience as a

commercial rat diver working in deep and

confined underwater structures John

chatter dense determination to explore

the unknown has taken him to some of the

most famous and infamous shipwrecks in

the world from the Britannic to the

Lusitania the Andrea Doria and even the

Titanic

giving all our difficulties and our

trials and tribulations with 10x to this

point it's been difficult to say the

least and now with John Chatterton and

his team arriving one thing comes to

mind they exude confidence this is our

war room here's where you've got

questions we've got answers awesome if

this is gonna get done they're gonna do

it

hi I'm Jack Jack how you doing I don't

think we've ever had that confidence

level David you want to get Marty Craig

as the team prepares to review scanning

sonar data obtained from the underground

chamber at the bottom of 10x Marty

lagina and Craig tester join the meeting

via videoconference from their offices

in Traverse City Michigan respectively

John Chatterton our Nierenberg how you

doing guys you know why we're here

God's gonna happen tomorrow we wanted to

come out there but I understand the

weather isn't cooperating - well it's

was the deteriorate is that right well

according to the weatherman it's the

most rain he's there and wind he's ever

forecast that doesn't sound good flying

weather

no it's gonna be bad but they don't care

as a matter of fact I like it when the

surface weather is a little bit

challenging because I feel like I'm

getting away with something know what

we're doing

we're gonna we're gonna make it happen

that is exciting as well I mean that was

our goal for this year was to get to the

bottom of that bloody 10x and see what

is in that chamber I mean there's a

chamber there for sure it has things in

it for sure but we just don't know what

they are

Jack can you bring up some of these

sonar image yeah

so we're gonna start out with the

wireframe model that Brian Abbott made

oh wow that's awesome in order to help

John Chatterton familiarize himself with

the bottom of 10x the team is reviewing

the scanning sonar data collected

earlier this year it indicates were

possible tunnels to vertical wooden

posts a treasure chest and even human

remains lied 235 feet underground this

is really valuable information and

obviously we can prioritize what's

important to you guys but so far we

haven't seen anything that makes us feel

anything but there was no sense of well

this may get done it may not get done

you know there an issue may come up

there was none of that

you're obviously probably the most

accomplished diver in the world but I

mean I've nothing like what you're doing

but I mean that the 27-inch hole where

the drill bar stuck in it is okay with

you although John chatter net is

confident that he will be able to make

his way to the bottom of 10x

through the narrow 27-inch wide shaft it

remains to be seen if the 20-foot drill

bar that is wedged inside might prove to

be a dangerous and impassable

obstruction

I have pipes I have I've had to navigate

past butterfly valves and this is a

relatively modest depth yes we're gonna

use umbilicals hot water I'm gonna go

into the chamber we're gonna have

another diver in water it's a tender you

know I'm gonna be wearing steel-toed

boots and if I have to move around on

the bottom I'm literally gonna be

walking around

to ensure that he will have as much

maneuverability as possible John will be

diving in only a wetsuit it will be

fitted with an umbilical hose that will

continuously pump hot water through the

suit in order to keep him reasonably

warm in the otherwise Bridget 40 degree

water both John and his fellow diver

Mike hunt Lou will also be wearing Kirby

Morgan helmets which will be able to

feed them a combination of oxygen

nitrogen and helium also known as trimix

the helmets are also equipped with live

voice and video feeds all of which will

be monitored by Howard Arenberg at the

surface how long can you stay down with

that we got a lot of Howard quits

pumping Howard quits pumping gas down to

me then I will come up but you should be

able to walk around and investigate the

bottom kind of fully oh absolutely

absolutely and I found that the room

exuded in confidence it was look here's

the guy finally who's gonna do what we

need done it's that simple we are

holding our breath though that just

patient let's get her done yeah

see you guys

let's do this thing

in spite of rain and the threat of a

possible hurricane for Rick Marty and

their partners today may go down as one

of the most exciting and memorable they

have had all summer sorry for the bad

weather everything's going good

everything's going to and splat in spite

of the weather

in John Chatterton they believed they

have finally found the diver who can

reach the bottom of borehole 10-x the

reason why today is hold such promises

simply because of the skill set and the

capabilities of John and his team hours

to dive supervisor he's gonna be

coordinating everything if anybody has a

question he's the guy to go to

and Howard will be in communication with

me okay so plan for with dive today he's

gonna get in the basket we're gonna

lower the basket to a water depth of 40

feet assisting John Chatterton

inside 10x we'll be safety diver Mike

Conley and both will be able to have

full communication with dive supervisor

Howard Ehrenberg who will remain at the

surface

as John makes his way down he will enter

the eight-foot-wide portion of the shaft

feet first Mike will then follow him to

the 181 foot level where he will remain

while John continues his descent through

the narrow 27-inch portion of the shaft

if John should encounter any

difficulties or dangerous obstructions

like the 20 foot drill bar that is

wedged at the 204 foot level Mike will

be ready to help him who is the guy

who's gonna be safe you're gonna be okay

the window I'll give you crap I'll give

you signals to take the basket up and

then stop and yeah okay anybody have any

questions no if we got any problems

we'll we'll solve them on the fly and

and that's it

I'd say let's get wet but we're already

way

when you talk to John is a gleam in his

eye and it's he wants to go down to the

bottom he's gonna go to bottom

he's not overconfident but he's

confident he knows what he can do

okay here we go

good

we're ready as a final precaution should

something go wrong with John's surface

air supply he will be carrying with him

a single emergency air tank attached to

his waist

copy that because Marty and Craig tester

cannot be there in person they will be

able to monitor the diver via

videoconference

you guys look a lot warmer than we do

beautiful care look we wouldn't have

started on this journey without my

brother so having him there released on

the television screen of course it's

important I mean that that's what this

is about

and I'm sure I know that he wishes he

were here are you in the water right now

okay

okay standby I'll stop I'll stop

confirmed
perfect okay when you step

onto the ladder I'm gonna fire on your

light okay John to guide himself down a

181 foot portion of the shaft John

Chapman is using the ladder installed

nearly 30 years ago by Dan and Dave

Blankenship although it is rusted due to

decades of exposure to the frigid salt

waters of the North Atlantic it should

still be strong enough for today's

descent right okay is the visibility

less than zero John yeah I think we can

kind of see it

opening so that's good he's like right

on schedule what's your death John

alright we're gonna switch gas now
okay

proceed then

inside the rock

you

you're in the rock copy world renowned

diver John Chatterton is now deep inside

or halt annex he has just entered the

narrow 27-inch hole and is about to make

his way to what could be a man-made

treasure chamber 235 feet deep

underground yes he's dropping down

through the anhydrate right now and you

can see the rock at a depth of 204 feet

beneath the surface John Chatterton has

encountered the drill bar that is

remained wedged inside the narrow

27-inch wide shaft

you should have some

slack be trying to run the host past the

drill bar

he's got quite a bit of slack in the

water right now getting past the 20 foot

drill bar is proving to be more

difficult than John chattered and

expected if he can't move his body

around it the dive is over

suddenly the team's worst fears have

become realized John Chatterton's

breathing and communications apparatus

have become caught on the drill bar if

his air cable breaks John could find

himself in deadly danger

we did

when you hear the word stuck over that a

diver a hundred and two hundred feet

below the surface of course it strikes a

court might the drill bar have dislodged

might it be in a very precarious

position nothing I can do but pray

why is free diver one are you able to

make it past that and continue down the

the opening by staying focused and

maneuvering his body carefully John

Chatterton has managed to move past the

drill bar and continuous journey down

the narrow 27-inch wide Chou fiber to if

you just want to stand by right there in

case John gets snagged again
Rick Marty

Craig and their partners could be just

minutes away from finding out if what

dan Blankenship has believed for 40

years is true the 10x really does

contain man-made tunnels wooden posts a

wooden chest human remains and quite

possibly the ultimate answer to what

happened on Oak Island centuries ago

now you're sure you're at the bottom of

that you're in the chambers what you're

saying

next time on the curse of Oak Island

what tunnel that humans were

we found it it blows the whole thing

wide open picked it up it was heavy

here we go we had to explore the boy so

we brought in of specialists

that right there I'm gonna looks

metallic if you're going to color
