The Colony (2009–…): Season 1, Episode 10 - Exodus - full transcript
Mike recovers from a nasty crash and helps the others beef up the Colony's defenses. Then, the Colonists race to finish the escape truck before the marauders launch their final offensive.
We're on the edge of a global catastrophic disaster.
Human conflict.
[indistinct shouting]
Nuclear bombs.
Natural disasters.
Chemical and biological warfare.
Without warning,
the world as we know it can come to an end.
Narrator:
For the past 9 weeks,
10 volunteers have been isolated
In a downtown Los Angeles warehouse.
Michael: Old manufacturing plant or something.
Narrator: Their goal,
Survive and rebuild after a simulated global disaster.
They started out with a limited supply of food,
water, tools, and building materials.
They've purified
L.A. River water...
Built a generator
that ran on wood scraps...
Vladimir:
We're getting free power from the sun, no generator.
Narrator:
...and then solar panels.
Narrator.
...and then solar panels.
They focused on communication..
"Colony in search
of government institution."
Narrator: ...an electric-powered recon vehicle...
- Be safe.
...and defense.
- Whoa!
- Wow!
Each project one step closer to self-sufficiency.
But as part of the experiment...
...they've had to deal with outside forces.
Allison: How dare you!
- And after nine weeks,
their food stocks are almost gone.
Joey: This is Hell!
- Last week, their access to the L.A. River
was cut off...
Oh [bleep]
...and an old foe returned.
Andre: This place is mine.
and I'm coming back with everything I can get
to take if from you.
- Now, will they complete the experiment?
Okay. Like that?
- Yeah.
Hang on.
- Oh Lord.
[bleep]
[crash]
[indistinct shouting]
Allison!
[bleep]
Incoming.
- Oh.
Allison get down here now!
Now, now now now now!
Okay, okay, okay.
Right now.
- Okay.
You okay?
How do you feel? Do you feel dizzy at all?
Sit down.
- Can you sit back?
Michael: I hit a pallet or something and it bucked me off.
- Did you fall over?
Yeah,
It threw me off.
I hit some...Aahhh.
- Sorry, sorry, sorry.
I went to shift a gear, and the damn thing took off.
And I turned it off
and it just kept going.
Throttle stick?
It stuck.
Morgan: Mike hit’s a pallet and the tricycle turns over
and he goes right into John C.
and Diane's work space.
- You were like Winnie the Pooh
headfirst into that table.
Allison: Mike had approximately a 2-inch laceration
across his forehead at the hairline,
which could affect all of us.
I am really, really nervous that our fate is in his hands.
- Get that table off.
Bring it up higher.
Okay, wait.
Michael: I’m sore as hell.
It threw me off like
A, you know, bucking bronco.
This is the accident scene.
That took out a big bite of his scalp.
And this is all his blood, right down here.
I looked at my work space and went,
hmm. You know what?
Maybe it's time to get out of here.
It seems like everything is going wrong at once.
Mike crash-landing on my workspace
I didn't expect him to walk away from it.
Andre came into the building the other day
And left us with a specific threat
we're down to our last water.
Our food stores are down to the point
Where we're considering eating pet food.
Everything seems to be pointing
to...uh, something really bad happening,
So we’re incredibly focused on trying to get the truck running.
Montella: In a survival situation,
your home is only as valuable
as the security and resources it provides.
When those things are threatened,
it will become necessary to relocate
In order to ensure your own survival.
Hey Joe, I think we need a foreman this week.
more than we've ever needed it.
So we can get out of here
and I would nominate you if you'd do it.
Man: Are you okay with that?
- You're it.
Joey: I really don't want to be foreman,
but we need to get this truck,
there's not even a question anymore.
It needs to get done.
I mean, if we stay around here,
We’re done for.
Alright, well, if that's the case, guys,
we need to bust [bleep]
and I’m gonna bust [bleep]
Okay, that gasifier
I can’t even tell you how important that is.
Narrator: Last week,
The colonists started building a wood gasifier
to fuel the truck's engine.
Now all that remains,
is engineer Vladimir's cooling system,
that will lower the gas's temperature
before pumping it into the engine.
I'm on it.
But it just a lot of tweeking. Anyway...
- Then tweek away.
- I'll...I'll...perfect.
The solar is very important
so I want that to be a priority for us today.
Narrator: Michael has designed a solar-powered array
That will power the truck's ancillary lights.
and charge tools for repairs on the road.
The array will be built in three stages.
First, the truck's frame will be reinforced
to bare the array's weight.
Second. Six panels
will be mounted on two steel support structures.
Third. The structures will be motorized
to open like a pair of wings.
But with Mike injured,
the project might not get off the ground.
Please check his head.
Make sure dressings we're all good and stuff.
I need him.
Guys, let's all act like everything I’m saying
is today, today, today
part of busting [bleep] and getting this done
Is, I want to get out of here before they come.
Joe, I hate to bring up one other thing,
but, where are we going?
We got to figure that out...today.
Narrator: What the colonists don't know yet,
is that the location of a new safe haven
will soon be revealed.
Fine. But now is not the time.
Now is the time to get it going.
In the side room,
John C., Diane, and Morgan begin the gasifier's final stage.
It's coming...okay...
Yay!
[speaking German]
This is sconch it's uh...
Narrator: Drained of fluid,
an old radiator will be used to cool the wood gas
coming from the gasifier.
The radiator attaches to the plank
ready to receive gasses coming from the gasifier.
The temperature needs to be around 70 degrees.
As you cool the fuel, it contracts.
That means you’re packing more molecules of fuel
in a given volume.
So when you inject that fuel into the cylinder of the engine,
you get more molecules that can be burnt
that gives you more power.
Narrator: An old fan will cool the gas even further.
Yeah, five inches.
Vladimir: I do have confidence
in not only that I can complete the job,
I do have confidence that the gasifier will actually work.
Joey: You okay?
Are you okay?
Okay.
I need to know what's going on with the solar panels, buddy.
When?
How long's it gonna take?
Joey: Let's get to business
Okay...
Let's be honest about what's going on here.
Cutting those braces down,
I'm gonna make the cuts,
to where I need it.
Do you feel good enough to at least oversee
or do the...
- No, I can move around
I just can't climb up there and weld.
- That's fine.
Narrator: With the pieces cut,
Joey steps out, and Mike steps in to take over the project
Michael: This is not what I needed.
Joey: I go to help Amy with something.
I come back down, and the one last piece that we have
to go across where I need it has been cut in half
because he's putting it on the sides.
[bleep]
Step away for 20 minutes, and a cluster[bleep] already.
'Cause nobody can [bleep] think.
He took the pieces and cut 'em.
Where's the next piece that we have to replace that one?
We don't have one.
How are you gonna mount these?
We're gonna make another piece.
- Of what? with what?
- I'll make it.
- With what?
- I have it.
What is it?
I want to know where it is.
we had a 93-inch piece that was perfect for that
Don't listen to Mike who's [bleep] got a slit in his head
and is probably seeing rainbows
and little chocolate fairies dancing around right now.
I mean, Mike, you got a gash in your head.
I don't even know if you're thinking straight right now, man.
- It is fine. Don't worry about it.
All we needed was one piece slapped down just like it was
We're done. We're perfect.
I don't know what he’s thinking.
All I know is, we don't have a lot materials.
It was fine the way it was.
I don't have time for this [bleep]
you know, we talk about getting out of here
and going to a better place,
and I really do want that for these people.
I need to make some decisions,
cause uh... I'm starting to realize
I'm safer without these people.
You know what?
I may be better off on my own.
I’d make it.
I know how to survive in this [bleep]
Okay?
These people don't.
[motors whirring]
They’re back.
What you got? They're back.
...by the wall.
Narrator:
As part of the experiment,
marauders cruise past,
which heightens the colonists' anxiety.
Leilani, I'm shutting this down right now.
I question if this group is ready
for any type of a threat or attack.
John C.: I don't think our defense plans
whether we actually really know what we're supposed to do,
or we're just not nearly as ready as we need to be.
John?
We’re sitting ducks.
Narrator: Coming up, Andre returns with full force.
Andre: I told you I'd be back!
- The yard!
Allison: Let me just...take a look at it real quick.
It’s not the cut that hurts.
It’s - the toe got smashed on top of the cut.
So, I’ll keep it covered.
John C.: every sign we see
indicates that something bad is about to happen.
We're trying frantically to get out the door.
We got to start talking about some security protocols
and what-ifs.
Morgan: these bikers are coming around,
and it's making us pretty nervous.
So we're on high alert because we're expecting an attack.
Joey: We know we've been threatened.
Let's get the truck going. The gasifier is huge
and we're gonna leave as soon as we possibly can.
If we don't get the chance to go out on our own when we want to,
we have to discuss positioning.
Narrator: with the escape
vehicle almost finished,
the colonists go over a defense plan
in case the sanctuary gets attacked.
Upstairs in the watchtower,
We’re gonna put that flamethrower.
John C.: my flamethrower
hopefully that would be a good both deterrent
and, if needed, a real weapon.
You stay up there and you just unleash hell
As long as you can on them.
Narrator: The second part of the plan
Also involves fire.
I want Amy on Molotov Cocktails from the roof.
Simple. I don't have to fabricate.
I just get to make an explosion.
Narrator: next, the colonists will block off
every entrance into the warehouse, except for one...
...the entrance from the yard into the main hallway,
an area the colonists call the monkey cage.
Joey: If there's a breach on it,
They've got to go through a few things.
They've got to go through an electrical fence...
hopefully a drop net.
Okay?
And I’d like to oil down that run, too.
We're hoping that a breach doesn’t come down,
but if it does, they're trapped.
If they're not, we got to be able to fight them off
until we get out of here, as well.
- Yeah.
Leilani: Now, do you want all of us to collapse
around the truck if that's the case?
If there's a breach inside -
to the truck and protect the truck,
which means protecting us.
- Yes.
and make sure they don't get on that truck.
Allison: I'll take the pallets that we were sleeping on…
and start stacking them.
...and stack them over here so that it's more of a maze,
and we'll close off one door.
- Yeah.
Leilani: the reason why I ended up barricading
and creating a funnel system
That gives you all the
protection that you might need
for those precious seconds, in case of any kind of attack.
Here's the tricky part.
Every hour is just another hour that goes by
that brings a possibility of...of having to...fight.
Us having to go into just a defense mode,
and every hour that goes by just makes me more nervous.
We're gonna want to wedge it in between these two gates.
so that when they're pounding on it, it's gonna hold it up.
Allison: Okay now, push it forward.
Cool.
Amy:
This buys us a lot of time.
That's the most important thing
is it just buys us time.
In the main warehouse
John C. prepares
his flamethrower for battle.
John C.:
This is a preliminary test.
What I’m gonna do now is,
I’m gonna actually top it off with air
so, put some more compressed air on top of this,
bring the pressure up,
and, uh...that fuel/air mix
is always gonna burn hotter
and hopefully go further.
I’m gonna make a few tweaks but I think when I do this,
this thing will be able to go
About 30 feet
Narrator: Using a valve found in the shop,
John adds compressed air to the fuel jet
to increase the flame distance.
John C.: Let's just move it up.
Amy, can you just get at the top, and I'll hand it to you?
Over.
- This is the part I was
- Could you just get over?
- You wanna get over this.
- Perfect....Awesome.
Narrator: At the monkey cage, Joey starts setting his trap.
First, the cage
Needs to be sealed off.
Joey: You wanna do the chain thing?
You can actually still do a chain?
- Yeah.
And put a plate here
So you can't even get to the freakin' lock.
All you got to do is slap it on, boom, locked - you're done.
- Weld the latch on it.
- Weld the latch on it.
and that would be and the best situation.
- Okay.
- Because without that gate,
then all this bull[bleep] not gonna matter.
- Got it down.
- Out of the way.
Narrator: Next, Joey takes a net they find in the warehouse,
hangs it with gate latches, and rigs a cord to make it fall.
All the cabling is gonna meet at one pull rope right here.
If I position each one of these towards that fulcrum point,
that will be my release point, and it should drop.
Narrator: While Joey hangs the net
Amy coats metal plates with oil.
Can't get over there, see the door...
Head over - it’s dark.
You can't find what's going on.
It’s totally slick
and impossible to pull it open
while you're falling all over the place
if you have not fallen on your [bleep] already
[clicking]
I hope somebody’s listening.
So, I’m doing my last Morse code transmission.
We've been sending it every day this time.
Narrator: For four weeks,
John C. has been sending a daily distress message
on his jury-rigged radio transmitter.
Colony in search of government institution.
Subject to attacks and kidnappings.
Need food, water, protection, medicine, and info.
Still haven't heard anything, but we still listen every day
I’m hoping somebody's out there hearing.
Morgan! Morgan!
Come here! Listen!
Come here! Listen!
Morgan! Morgan! Come here!
Morgan! Morgan! Come here!
That's not us.
- No, I know.
John! John!
John!
John C.: John, me?
Come on.
- What? On the radio?
We're getting a message right now!
It's saying 'Message received'.
Narrator:
As part of the experiment,
the volunteers are given the latitude and longitude
of a new colony.
Amy: Okay, listen, listen. Everyone be quite.
food & water.
energy & security.
John C.: Oh wow.
Amy: Hundreds of survivors
John C.: Oh wow.
Come on.
John: Hey, you guys.
Amy: You guys.
John C.: We got something pretty interesting here.
Everybody, Mike, drop what you’re doing.
We got a message today
from someone who said they received our message.
Message received...stop.
Head south...stop.
We have food and water...stop.
Energy and security...stop.
Hundreds of survivors...stop
Where's it at?
And then they gave us coordinates.
We have a destination.
At least we know that there’s other people out there.
We don't have to live like this anymore.
John C.: Let's get this done.
I wanna know where the hell this is.
Narrator: Using an atlas found in the truck glove box,
The colonists plot the coordinates.
- What's that?
- It could be South America for all we know.
- That's Los Angeles.
- That's Los Angeles.
- It too short to San Diego.
- Go down there.
Go to San Juan.
Narrator:
The map reveals the location
to be 120 miles south of Los Angeles.
Joey: now there's a place that we can go to,
or that they can go to,
Cause I’m not going down there.
I’m one of the people
that should probably stay behind and help
this is my city,
and if there's guys out there trying to rebuild it,
who am I to takeoff,
when I'm one of the few people
that actually could help rebuild this city?
Narrator: Now with their destination revealed,
the colonists turn their attention back to the truck.
Vladimir: The gasifier has been worked on now for days.
We’ve changed design to the size of the engine.
The problem that I'm facing at this point,
is a problem of the plumbing.
And I actually feel tired.
Everybody's starting to feel that way.
You try and stay mentally sharp as possible,
but you're overworked, undernourished.
things take very serious time.
We're getting there.
We're getting there? How close?
Are we ready to fire this thing up?
- No.
Okay, how close are we to firing it up?
- I'll need, ya know... one more day or maybe two.
Joey: This truck
Should have been done,
and we should have been on our way before now.
I'm at the point of taking the gasifier,
and throwing it in the river.
How we doing on solars?
Yeah?
So, we're close to, uh... being done?
Mike, how you feeling?
Michael: Exhausted.
I know. I hear you.
Michael: I feel terrible.
I have no energy.
I’m hurting myself.
I’m not thinking right
But we just do what we can,
because the alternative is unacceptable.
There is no failure here.
That truck has to get running.
Narrator:
With the truck frame reinforced,
John C. Heads outside
to dismantle the solar panels.
No, you don’t have to -oh, you got to go one up?
- Careful. You got it?
- Yep.
John C.: It's funny taking these things down.
It looks so barren.
Oh well, let's go mount 'em.
John V.: I have to mount the solar panels right now.
Mike's sick, we have marauders breathing down our necks.
We got to get out of here now.
I've got to get these things on here.
Our big concern right now is sustainable power.
We’ll be in the truck for a while,
and we need to have our own electricity.
If we get to our destination and there is no power,
What are we gonna do7
Narrator:
As Joey and John V. attach the panels to the support frames,
Michael works on the motorized drives.
These two gear-drive motors are gonna turn the worm drive,
which is gonna open it one way, stop,
and then we turn it the other way to close.
Narrator: After the drives are welded to the reinforced frame,
It's time to test the array.
John V.: Alright. Bring them up.
Ta-da!
John C.: the chances that something's gonna go wrong
On the trip
Are about 100%, right?
So we're gonna need to be able to have a mobile shop with us.
I’m sure of it.
Narrator: It's dinnertime,
But the only thing on the menu is rice.
Thinking of having dirty rice in a place like this,
puts a whole new meaning to dirty rice.
Narrator:
Starved for protein,
John C. takes a desperate step
with cat food Found in the warehouse.
I was just reading the cat-food thing, and it's just tuna.
It really is. It doesn't say 'Not for..
It doesn't say 'Not for people'
so I'm gonna go for it, cause
I need it.
Oh.
- Hey.
- Have you ever seen tuna that color?
John C.: Lemme try it.
- Okay.
- It tastes like tuna.
Joey: I need to work on the electric fence.
That one'll stretch and fit.
Let's just strip a bunch of 18-gauge and just wire it up.
Michael: Maybe I can just join that
with the pieces that we have left.
[drill whirring]
Okay, that's up.
Up and running.
Alright the Electric fence is hot, okay?
No one outside anymore.
Narrator: Amy gets to work on the Molotov Cocktails.
Amy: the gas that I’ve got
Right now to use
is what we've pilfered out of the tanks out back.
This gas is bad for the cars.
It's perfect
for Molotov Cocktails.
I’m very excited about this.
Everyone else gets to blow things up and light things,
throw things and scream and rant and rave,
and I’m excited to take part in the chaos.
Yeah, that will work.
Okay.
So, I’m gonna go try out this one.
[Chuckles] See...see what I can blow up.
Okay,
Fire in the hole.
It’s a little on the edge,
You know?
You've got this flaming, freakin' glass bottle
In your hand.
Five, four, three, two, one.
John C.: Ahhh!
Whoa!
Amy, that is so beautiful!
I like it!
Wicked!
That's rad!
Yeah! That's the kind of [bleep] I like.
Bring it on, marauders.
Now I got a weapon.
They're gonna get a ball of fire
If they come anywhere near these gates.
Allison:
Right now everybody is pretty much focusing on the truck,
Focusing on getting out of here
at any minute.
We're waiting on Vlad to get the gasifier finished.
Get it loaded up, and let's get to those coordinates, alright?
Allison: Vlad, we're waiting on you dear.
I'll need...ya know,
one more day or maybe
two more days...or whatever.
John V.: We don't have a couple more days.
Food and water's really low, so, you know, we got a day at most
He needs to be done with that thing,
and it's working so we can get on out of here and just leave.
Vlad, I mean, buddy, we got to leave tonight, man.
We got to leave in an hour if we can.
You said yesterday that thing is ready.
Vladimir: I thought that it was going to be ready.
But there's always some kind
There is always some
kind of problem is what I'm saying
Morgan: this is a project we can't afford to mess up.
It’s taking a long time.
It shouldn't take this long.
How far can we go on the gas right now?
Those coordinates were like 130 miles away.
- We can't go that far.
Vlad.
I want to spend the time.
What I’m saying, Vlad
is we need to get out of here.
we can't hold up any work on this.
Vladimir is driving me [bleep] nuts with this gasifier,
but, we need to get out of here,
and I'm not gonna get pissed about it
I’m gonna help him.
We’re all gonna help him.
Put it on, and then we need to test this in an hour.
Okay?
Take care of it.
John V.:
Right now what I’m doing
is coming up with a mounting bracket for the radiator.
I need to just get it in a frame, 'cause right now,
radiators - they don't have
Any bolt holes
or anything like that, so I need to make it so it's sturdy,
rigid, won't move, but somewhat adjustable,
and we can get this thing working and off the ground.
[drill whirring ]
Michael:
These brackets will mount the cooling fan on to the radiator
and the majority of the work for the gasifier should be done.
Fantastic.
So, you want
Like this right there?
I'm holding...
that what I'm holding the radiator.
Okay. Cool.
John V.: I just go up and weld right to the truck itself
and the gasifier itself,
and it came out beautiful.
What we're going to do,
we're going to fill the hopper with charcoal.
The gas is going to be coming
from the bottom portion of the gasifier
into the duct-top portion.
of the inter-cooler.
Which is really a radiator.
It is going to be passing through the
core, and coming out this hose
and going directly into the modulator valve
that is sitting on top of the carburetor.
Narrator: Joey and Vladimir,
add charcoal to the gasifier
for the final test.
We're waiting for the gasifier to start smoking,
and then we run the wood gas into the engine.
And I have no idea if this is gonna work.
[engine turns over]
There ya go.
You got it going Morgan.
Let's get outta here guys.
Let's get outta here.
Whoo!
I can't believe it!
Morgan:
So, we’ll be able to start the truck from inside the cabin,
and now we've also found out
that the engine
Is in good, running order,
and the gasifier
Is hooked up to it,
and I think we’re gonna be able to get out of here soon,
so we're leaving, getting out of here.
[groans]
John V.: we're only taking the essentials-
Gasoline, our own personal bedding items,
our clothes, a gallon of water.
Okay.
Michael: Here Joey.
Michael: I put all the tools on the truck.
That's all I need -
Tools and the shirt
That I walked here with.
And that's all I’m leaving herewith.
[groans]
[metal scraping]
Amy:
Most of the stuff is on here.
It's loaded now.
I’m ready.
This is it.
We're jumping over the edge.
Okay. That's it.
I mean, that's what we can take.
We’re loaded.
Narrator:
Before the colonists leave,
John C. And Diane take
one last moment to say goodbye
And honor their son Sam.
One more Sam stone, honey.
I put 'em in the soap
and I put 'em in the water thing.
And I was thinking that I'd put it here in this building,
'cause we're leaving
Is that okay?
Did you write something?
- Yeah.
I had a son, Sam, who was 14 years old,
Who was killed in a traffic accident.
Soon after his death, we started making these stones.
They're just simple -made out of clay,
And they have his name written in them.
[sobbing]
John V., on his own, came up with the idea
Of making a small metal box,
Kind of a time capsule,
where we could put one of the Sam’s stones...
Alright, Sam...We love you.
..and actually welding that
into the structure of the building.
We just had one of those very emotional-breakdown moments,
And then we move on with our lives.
It's just part of loss and living.
[engines rumbling]
Okay, cool. Let's get outta here..
- Holy Sh[bleep]
All right, everybody, calm.
Everybody, to your positions.
They're at the gate.
Joey: Leilani, are we locked over here?
There are only about four to five that I can see.
They're holding at the main door.
Aw [bleep]
Narrator: in the final phase of the experiment,
Andre and his team of marauders have been instructed
to take control of the colonist's sanctuary.
They're not allowed to physically harm the colonists,
but the colonists don't know that.
Allison: Fire! Fire in the yard!
All right.
Amy, do what you need to do.
John, over there.
Let's roll!
Allison: Leilani, I'm headed up.
They're not in the yard yet.
Oh [bleep]
They knocked the gate down with a car!
Andre: I told you I d be back!
It's Andre!
It’s Andre!
Amy: Andre!
Joey: Coming to the front door!
[electricity crackles]
Anybody hit?! Anybody hit?!
Andre: You think this is gonna stop me?!
Michael: Let it go, Amy. Let him have it.
Let it go Amy!
You think it’s over?!
Bring your [bleep] down here and fight!
Allison!
- Guys!
John C.: You got it John!
[indistinct shouting]
Lock it up!
Lock it up!
Go!
- We got a breach! Get in here!
Come on!
[electricity crackles]
Go! Go!
Fall back!
John V.: yeah! Yeah!
Yeah! Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah! Burn!
[engine turns over]
Joey: there we go, John! Yeah, baby! Come on!
Lets go!
- John, Let's go!
Hop on the back of it!
Hop in that Ranchero!
Everybody s on?
Is everybody on?
Hold on!
- Hold on.
[all cheering]
Allison: Go! Go!
[all cheering]
Yeah!
Joey: Oh my God.
After all the work, after all the bickering,
the sweating, the [bleep]
We were finally on our way.
We finally did
what we needed to do.
With their home
now under marauder control,
they have only one choice
Drive south.
John V.: I thank god that everybody is safe
and looking forward to our destination,
where there's food, water, shelter, security
all the things we were looking for.
Narrator:
The colonists drive to their destination on the L.A. River,
which is no longer controlled by the marauders.
Joey: all right, all right, you guys. Hold on!
John V.: That feeling in the air of excitement
that, you know, you're going down there,
the wind's blasting in your face,
moving on to greener pastures.
Whoo!
Nothing is impossible.
That's my motto.
We wanted it bad enough,
and we weren't gonna take 'no' or a failure.
[horn honks]
What?
Try to get these people down there.
I'm staying in L.A.
I'll walk if I have to.
but, I'd rather take this.
This is my [bleep] city. I'm staying
- That's your decision, dude.
- I made it a while ago.
I wanted to get this truck going,
I've had this planned for a while.
- What's going on Joey?
What's going on?
Joey?
There's just something in here
Come on Joey?
Come on Joey.
Alright.
I love you guys.
- Are you leaving?
Leilani: I felt in my heart Joey was always the loner.
But to see him go, to have him
separate from us immediately,
so quickly...it did hurt.
I'll be praying for ya!
Morgan:
Joey wants to be a loner,
and he thinks he is a loner,
but he doesn't realize how much he needs other people.
He needs to change the way he thinks about it.
Being with a group saved his life.
- Good luck, Joey!
Good luck!
- Good luck, Joey!
- Good luck, Joey!
Good luck!
John C.: I said early on
that we were gonna build our way out of the colony,
and I'm just trying to figure out
if this truck is gonna get us where we need to go.
Allison: I hope this gets us to where we can go and rebuild
and not run out of food
and water before we get there.
Basically, I think the
Number-one thing I learned here
was that survival
Is an attitude.
It's about, you know, embracing the past
and embracing your memories,
but moving on and having hope and staying positive.
An immersive experiment
forces participants!
to confront challenges
they don't have to deal with in their normal, daily lives.
And through those struggles,
they learn things about themselves
they may never have discovered otherwise.
Vladimir: Truly being in this type of situation,
you sort of evolve into a family,
and you grow emotionally.
It really has changed something in me
In terms of what I thought was important
and what I might plan to do the rest of my life.
And it’s something that's growing inside me,
and I think that s pretty cool.
Amy: For some reason,
I felt like I would not survive because I was a female.
I am absolutely confident that I would be just fine.
And I have survived.
It’s not - it was just the fact
That I didn't need to prove it to
these guys that I had to survive.
It's just -
I needed to prove it to myself.
Michael: I don't think I’ve been in a tougher situation, really.
Period.
This is the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
We made the best of a bad situation.
If you want it bad enough you will do it.
And we all wanted it bad enough,
and that's why we, the colonists, all did it -
Got the hell out of here.
In the 21st century,
few people have the necessary skills
In order to survive a catastrophic event
a simulated disaster scenario
is an invaluable way to prepare.
Because disasters can happen at any time, with no notice.
John V.: hopefully, we'll never have to utilize
any of these skills that we did here.
It would be great if we just worked out
whatever problems we had in the world
that we wouldn't have to deal with this.
If, god forbid, this was to ever happen,
we'd know where to take it to and how to deal with it
Human conflict.
[indistinct shouting]
Nuclear bombs.
Natural disasters.
Chemical and biological warfare.
Without warning,
the world as we know it can come to an end.
Narrator:
For the past 9 weeks,
10 volunteers have been isolated
In a downtown Los Angeles warehouse.
Michael: Old manufacturing plant or something.
Narrator: Their goal,
Survive and rebuild after a simulated global disaster.
They started out with a limited supply of food,
water, tools, and building materials.
They've purified
L.A. River water...
Built a generator
that ran on wood scraps...
Vladimir:
We're getting free power from the sun, no generator.
Narrator:
...and then solar panels.
Narrator.
...and then solar panels.
They focused on communication..
"Colony in search
of government institution."
Narrator: ...an electric-powered recon vehicle...
- Be safe.
...and defense.
- Whoa!
- Wow!
Each project one step closer to self-sufficiency.
But as part of the experiment...
...they've had to deal with outside forces.
Allison: How dare you!
- And after nine weeks,
their food stocks are almost gone.
Joey: This is Hell!
- Last week, their access to the L.A. River
was cut off...
Oh [bleep]
...and an old foe returned.
Andre: This place is mine.
and I'm coming back with everything I can get
to take if from you.
- Now, will they complete the experiment?
Okay. Like that?
- Yeah.
Hang on.
- Oh Lord.
[bleep]
[crash]
[indistinct shouting]
Allison!
[bleep]
Incoming.
- Oh.
Allison get down here now!
Now, now now now now!
Okay, okay, okay.
Right now.
- Okay.
You okay?
How do you feel? Do you feel dizzy at all?
Sit down.
- Can you sit back?
Michael: I hit a pallet or something and it bucked me off.
- Did you fall over?
Yeah,
It threw me off.
I hit some...Aahhh.
- Sorry, sorry, sorry.
I went to shift a gear, and the damn thing took off.
And I turned it off
and it just kept going.
Throttle stick?
It stuck.
Morgan: Mike hit’s a pallet and the tricycle turns over
and he goes right into John C.
and Diane's work space.
- You were like Winnie the Pooh
headfirst into that table.
Allison: Mike had approximately a 2-inch laceration
across his forehead at the hairline,
which could affect all of us.
I am really, really nervous that our fate is in his hands.
- Get that table off.
Bring it up higher.
Okay, wait.
Michael: I’m sore as hell.
It threw me off like
A, you know, bucking bronco.
This is the accident scene.
That took out a big bite of his scalp.
And this is all his blood, right down here.
I looked at my work space and went,
hmm. You know what?
Maybe it's time to get out of here.
It seems like everything is going wrong at once.
Mike crash-landing on my workspace
I didn't expect him to walk away from it.
Andre came into the building the other day
And left us with a specific threat
we're down to our last water.
Our food stores are down to the point
Where we're considering eating pet food.
Everything seems to be pointing
to...uh, something really bad happening,
So we’re incredibly focused on trying to get the truck running.
Montella: In a survival situation,
your home is only as valuable
as the security and resources it provides.
When those things are threatened,
it will become necessary to relocate
In order to ensure your own survival.
Hey Joe, I think we need a foreman this week.
more than we've ever needed it.
So we can get out of here
and I would nominate you if you'd do it.
Man: Are you okay with that?
- You're it.
Joey: I really don't want to be foreman,
but we need to get this truck,
there's not even a question anymore.
It needs to get done.
I mean, if we stay around here,
We’re done for.
Alright, well, if that's the case, guys,
we need to bust [bleep]
and I’m gonna bust [bleep]
Okay, that gasifier
I can’t even tell you how important that is.
Narrator: Last week,
The colonists started building a wood gasifier
to fuel the truck's engine.
Now all that remains,
is engineer Vladimir's cooling system,
that will lower the gas's temperature
before pumping it into the engine.
I'm on it.
But it just a lot of tweeking. Anyway...
- Then tweek away.
- I'll...I'll...perfect.
The solar is very important
so I want that to be a priority for us today.
Narrator: Michael has designed a solar-powered array
That will power the truck's ancillary lights.
and charge tools for repairs on the road.
The array will be built in three stages.
First, the truck's frame will be reinforced
to bare the array's weight.
Second. Six panels
will be mounted on two steel support structures.
Third. The structures will be motorized
to open like a pair of wings.
But with Mike injured,
the project might not get off the ground.
Please check his head.
Make sure dressings we're all good and stuff.
I need him.
Guys, let's all act like everything I’m saying
is today, today, today
part of busting [bleep] and getting this done
Is, I want to get out of here before they come.
Joe, I hate to bring up one other thing,
but, where are we going?
We got to figure that out...today.
Narrator: What the colonists don't know yet,
is that the location of a new safe haven
will soon be revealed.
Fine. But now is not the time.
Now is the time to get it going.
In the side room,
John C., Diane, and Morgan begin the gasifier's final stage.
It's coming...okay...
Yay!
[speaking German]
This is sconch it's uh...
Narrator: Drained of fluid,
an old radiator will be used to cool the wood gas
coming from the gasifier.
The radiator attaches to the plank
ready to receive gasses coming from the gasifier.
The temperature needs to be around 70 degrees.
As you cool the fuel, it contracts.
That means you’re packing more molecules of fuel
in a given volume.
So when you inject that fuel into the cylinder of the engine,
you get more molecules that can be burnt
that gives you more power.
Narrator: An old fan will cool the gas even further.
Yeah, five inches.
Vladimir: I do have confidence
in not only that I can complete the job,
I do have confidence that the gasifier will actually work.
Joey: You okay?
Are you okay?
Okay.
I need to know what's going on with the solar panels, buddy.
When?
How long's it gonna take?
Joey: Let's get to business
Okay...
Let's be honest about what's going on here.
Cutting those braces down,
I'm gonna make the cuts,
to where I need it.
Do you feel good enough to at least oversee
or do the...
- No, I can move around
I just can't climb up there and weld.
- That's fine.
Narrator: With the pieces cut,
Joey steps out, and Mike steps in to take over the project
Michael: This is not what I needed.
Joey: I go to help Amy with something.
I come back down, and the one last piece that we have
to go across where I need it has been cut in half
because he's putting it on the sides.
[bleep]
Step away for 20 minutes, and a cluster[bleep] already.
'Cause nobody can [bleep] think.
He took the pieces and cut 'em.
Where's the next piece that we have to replace that one?
We don't have one.
How are you gonna mount these?
We're gonna make another piece.
- Of what? with what?
- I'll make it.
- With what?
- I have it.
What is it?
I want to know where it is.
we had a 93-inch piece that was perfect for that
Don't listen to Mike who's [bleep] got a slit in his head
and is probably seeing rainbows
and little chocolate fairies dancing around right now.
I mean, Mike, you got a gash in your head.
I don't even know if you're thinking straight right now, man.
- It is fine. Don't worry about it.
All we needed was one piece slapped down just like it was
We're done. We're perfect.
I don't know what he’s thinking.
All I know is, we don't have a lot materials.
It was fine the way it was.
I don't have time for this [bleep]
you know, we talk about getting out of here
and going to a better place,
and I really do want that for these people.
I need to make some decisions,
cause uh... I'm starting to realize
I'm safer without these people.
You know what?
I may be better off on my own.
I’d make it.
I know how to survive in this [bleep]
Okay?
These people don't.
[motors whirring]
They’re back.
What you got? They're back.
...by the wall.
Narrator:
As part of the experiment,
marauders cruise past,
which heightens the colonists' anxiety.
Leilani, I'm shutting this down right now.
I question if this group is ready
for any type of a threat or attack.
John C.: I don't think our defense plans
whether we actually really know what we're supposed to do,
or we're just not nearly as ready as we need to be.
John?
We’re sitting ducks.
Narrator: Coming up, Andre returns with full force.
Andre: I told you I'd be back!
- The yard!
Allison: Let me just...take a look at it real quick.
It’s not the cut that hurts.
It’s - the toe got smashed on top of the cut.
So, I’ll keep it covered.
John C.: every sign we see
indicates that something bad is about to happen.
We're trying frantically to get out the door.
We got to start talking about some security protocols
and what-ifs.
Morgan: these bikers are coming around,
and it's making us pretty nervous.
So we're on high alert because we're expecting an attack.
Joey: We know we've been threatened.
Let's get the truck going. The gasifier is huge
and we're gonna leave as soon as we possibly can.
If we don't get the chance to go out on our own when we want to,
we have to discuss positioning.
Narrator: with the escape
vehicle almost finished,
the colonists go over a defense plan
in case the sanctuary gets attacked.
Upstairs in the watchtower,
We’re gonna put that flamethrower.
John C.: my flamethrower
hopefully that would be a good both deterrent
and, if needed, a real weapon.
You stay up there and you just unleash hell
As long as you can on them.
Narrator: The second part of the plan
Also involves fire.
I want Amy on Molotov Cocktails from the roof.
Simple. I don't have to fabricate.
I just get to make an explosion.
Narrator: next, the colonists will block off
every entrance into the warehouse, except for one...
...the entrance from the yard into the main hallway,
an area the colonists call the monkey cage.
Joey: If there's a breach on it,
They've got to go through a few things.
They've got to go through an electrical fence...
hopefully a drop net.
Okay?
And I’d like to oil down that run, too.
We're hoping that a breach doesn’t come down,
but if it does, they're trapped.
If they're not, we got to be able to fight them off
until we get out of here, as well.
- Yeah.
Leilani: Now, do you want all of us to collapse
around the truck if that's the case?
If there's a breach inside -
to the truck and protect the truck,
which means protecting us.
- Yes.
and make sure they don't get on that truck.
Allison: I'll take the pallets that we were sleeping on…
and start stacking them.
...and stack them over here so that it's more of a maze,
and we'll close off one door.
- Yeah.
Leilani: the reason why I ended up barricading
and creating a funnel system
That gives you all the
protection that you might need
for those precious seconds, in case of any kind of attack.
Here's the tricky part.
Every hour is just another hour that goes by
that brings a possibility of...of having to...fight.
Us having to go into just a defense mode,
and every hour that goes by just makes me more nervous.
We're gonna want to wedge it in between these two gates.
so that when they're pounding on it, it's gonna hold it up.
Allison: Okay now, push it forward.
Cool.
Amy:
This buys us a lot of time.
That's the most important thing
is it just buys us time.
In the main warehouse
John C. prepares
his flamethrower for battle.
John C.:
This is a preliminary test.
What I’m gonna do now is,
I’m gonna actually top it off with air
so, put some more compressed air on top of this,
bring the pressure up,
and, uh...that fuel/air mix
is always gonna burn hotter
and hopefully go further.
I’m gonna make a few tweaks but I think when I do this,
this thing will be able to go
About 30 feet
Narrator: Using a valve found in the shop,
John adds compressed air to the fuel jet
to increase the flame distance.
John C.: Let's just move it up.
Amy, can you just get at the top, and I'll hand it to you?
Over.
- This is the part I was
- Could you just get over?
- You wanna get over this.
- Perfect....Awesome.
Narrator: At the monkey cage, Joey starts setting his trap.
First, the cage
Needs to be sealed off.
Joey: You wanna do the chain thing?
You can actually still do a chain?
- Yeah.
And put a plate here
So you can't even get to the freakin' lock.
All you got to do is slap it on, boom, locked - you're done.
- Weld the latch on it.
- Weld the latch on it.
and that would be and the best situation.
- Okay.
- Because without that gate,
then all this bull[bleep] not gonna matter.
- Got it down.
- Out of the way.
Narrator: Next, Joey takes a net they find in the warehouse,
hangs it with gate latches, and rigs a cord to make it fall.
All the cabling is gonna meet at one pull rope right here.
If I position each one of these towards that fulcrum point,
that will be my release point, and it should drop.
Narrator: While Joey hangs the net
Amy coats metal plates with oil.
Can't get over there, see the door...
Head over - it’s dark.
You can't find what's going on.
It’s totally slick
and impossible to pull it open
while you're falling all over the place
if you have not fallen on your [bleep] already
[clicking]
I hope somebody’s listening.
So, I’m doing my last Morse code transmission.
We've been sending it every day this time.
Narrator: For four weeks,
John C. has been sending a daily distress message
on his jury-rigged radio transmitter.
Colony in search of government institution.
Subject to attacks and kidnappings.
Need food, water, protection, medicine, and info.
Still haven't heard anything, but we still listen every day
I’m hoping somebody's out there hearing.
Morgan! Morgan!
Come here! Listen!
Come here! Listen!
Morgan! Morgan! Come here!
Morgan! Morgan! Come here!
That's not us.
- No, I know.
John! John!
John!
John C.: John, me?
Come on.
- What? On the radio?
We're getting a message right now!
It's saying 'Message received'.
Narrator:
As part of the experiment,
the volunteers are given the latitude and longitude
of a new colony.
Amy: Okay, listen, listen. Everyone be quite.
food & water.
energy & security.
John C.: Oh wow.
Amy: Hundreds of survivors
John C.: Oh wow.
Come on.
John: Hey, you guys.
Amy: You guys.
John C.: We got something pretty interesting here.
Everybody, Mike, drop what you’re doing.
We got a message today
from someone who said they received our message.
Message received...stop.
Head south...stop.
We have food and water...stop.
Energy and security...stop.
Hundreds of survivors...stop
Where's it at?
And then they gave us coordinates.
We have a destination.
At least we know that there’s other people out there.
We don't have to live like this anymore.
John C.: Let's get this done.
I wanna know where the hell this is.
Narrator: Using an atlas found in the truck glove box,
The colonists plot the coordinates.
- What's that?
- It could be South America for all we know.
- That's Los Angeles.
- That's Los Angeles.
- It too short to San Diego.
- Go down there.
Go to San Juan.
Narrator:
The map reveals the location
to be 120 miles south of Los Angeles.
Joey: now there's a place that we can go to,
or that they can go to,
Cause I’m not going down there.
I’m one of the people
that should probably stay behind and help
this is my city,
and if there's guys out there trying to rebuild it,
who am I to takeoff,
when I'm one of the few people
that actually could help rebuild this city?
Narrator: Now with their destination revealed,
the colonists turn their attention back to the truck.
Vladimir: The gasifier has been worked on now for days.
We’ve changed design to the size of the engine.
The problem that I'm facing at this point,
is a problem of the plumbing.
And I actually feel tired.
Everybody's starting to feel that way.
You try and stay mentally sharp as possible,
but you're overworked, undernourished.
things take very serious time.
We're getting there.
We're getting there? How close?
Are we ready to fire this thing up?
- No.
Okay, how close are we to firing it up?
- I'll need, ya know... one more day or maybe two.
Joey: This truck
Should have been done,
and we should have been on our way before now.
I'm at the point of taking the gasifier,
and throwing it in the river.
How we doing on solars?
Yeah?
So, we're close to, uh... being done?
Mike, how you feeling?
Michael: Exhausted.
I know. I hear you.
Michael: I feel terrible.
I have no energy.
I’m hurting myself.
I’m not thinking right
But we just do what we can,
because the alternative is unacceptable.
There is no failure here.
That truck has to get running.
Narrator:
With the truck frame reinforced,
John C. Heads outside
to dismantle the solar panels.
No, you don’t have to -oh, you got to go one up?
- Careful. You got it?
- Yep.
John C.: It's funny taking these things down.
It looks so barren.
Oh well, let's go mount 'em.
John V.: I have to mount the solar panels right now.
Mike's sick, we have marauders breathing down our necks.
We got to get out of here now.
I've got to get these things on here.
Our big concern right now is sustainable power.
We’ll be in the truck for a while,
and we need to have our own electricity.
If we get to our destination and there is no power,
What are we gonna do7
Narrator:
As Joey and John V. attach the panels to the support frames,
Michael works on the motorized drives.
These two gear-drive motors are gonna turn the worm drive,
which is gonna open it one way, stop,
and then we turn it the other way to close.
Narrator: After the drives are welded to the reinforced frame,
It's time to test the array.
John V.: Alright. Bring them up.
Ta-da!
John C.: the chances that something's gonna go wrong
On the trip
Are about 100%, right?
So we're gonna need to be able to have a mobile shop with us.
I’m sure of it.
Narrator: It's dinnertime,
But the only thing on the menu is rice.
Thinking of having dirty rice in a place like this,
puts a whole new meaning to dirty rice.
Narrator:
Starved for protein,
John C. takes a desperate step
with cat food Found in the warehouse.
I was just reading the cat-food thing, and it's just tuna.
It really is. It doesn't say 'Not for..
It doesn't say 'Not for people'
so I'm gonna go for it, cause
I need it.
Oh.
- Hey.
- Have you ever seen tuna that color?
John C.: Lemme try it.
- Okay.
- It tastes like tuna.
Joey: I need to work on the electric fence.
That one'll stretch and fit.
Let's just strip a bunch of 18-gauge and just wire it up.
Michael: Maybe I can just join that
with the pieces that we have left.
[drill whirring]
Okay, that's up.
Up and running.
Alright the Electric fence is hot, okay?
No one outside anymore.
Narrator: Amy gets to work on the Molotov Cocktails.
Amy: the gas that I’ve got
Right now to use
is what we've pilfered out of the tanks out back.
This gas is bad for the cars.
It's perfect
for Molotov Cocktails.
I’m very excited about this.
Everyone else gets to blow things up and light things,
throw things and scream and rant and rave,
and I’m excited to take part in the chaos.
Yeah, that will work.
Okay.
So, I’m gonna go try out this one.
[Chuckles] See...see what I can blow up.
Okay,
Fire in the hole.
It’s a little on the edge,
You know?
You've got this flaming, freakin' glass bottle
In your hand.
Five, four, three, two, one.
John C.: Ahhh!
Whoa!
Amy, that is so beautiful!
I like it!
Wicked!
That's rad!
Yeah! That's the kind of [bleep] I like.
Bring it on, marauders.
Now I got a weapon.
They're gonna get a ball of fire
If they come anywhere near these gates.
Allison:
Right now everybody is pretty much focusing on the truck,
Focusing on getting out of here
at any minute.
We're waiting on Vlad to get the gasifier finished.
Get it loaded up, and let's get to those coordinates, alright?
Allison: Vlad, we're waiting on you dear.
I'll need...ya know,
one more day or maybe
two more days...or whatever.
John V.: We don't have a couple more days.
Food and water's really low, so, you know, we got a day at most
He needs to be done with that thing,
and it's working so we can get on out of here and just leave.
Vlad, I mean, buddy, we got to leave tonight, man.
We got to leave in an hour if we can.
You said yesterday that thing is ready.
Vladimir: I thought that it was going to be ready.
But there's always some kind
There is always some
kind of problem is what I'm saying
Morgan: this is a project we can't afford to mess up.
It’s taking a long time.
It shouldn't take this long.
How far can we go on the gas right now?
Those coordinates were like 130 miles away.
- We can't go that far.
Vlad.
I want to spend the time.
What I’m saying, Vlad
is we need to get out of here.
we can't hold up any work on this.
Vladimir is driving me [bleep] nuts with this gasifier,
but, we need to get out of here,
and I'm not gonna get pissed about it
I’m gonna help him.
We’re all gonna help him.
Put it on, and then we need to test this in an hour.
Okay?
Take care of it.
John V.:
Right now what I’m doing
is coming up with a mounting bracket for the radiator.
I need to just get it in a frame, 'cause right now,
radiators - they don't have
Any bolt holes
or anything like that, so I need to make it so it's sturdy,
rigid, won't move, but somewhat adjustable,
and we can get this thing working and off the ground.
[drill whirring ]
Michael:
These brackets will mount the cooling fan on to the radiator
and the majority of the work for the gasifier should be done.
Fantastic.
So, you want
Like this right there?
I'm holding...
that what I'm holding the radiator.
Okay. Cool.
John V.: I just go up and weld right to the truck itself
and the gasifier itself,
and it came out beautiful.
What we're going to do,
we're going to fill the hopper with charcoal.
The gas is going to be coming
from the bottom portion of the gasifier
into the duct-top portion.
of the inter-cooler.
Which is really a radiator.
It is going to be passing through the
core, and coming out this hose
and going directly into the modulator valve
that is sitting on top of the carburetor.
Narrator: Joey and Vladimir,
add charcoal to the gasifier
for the final test.
We're waiting for the gasifier to start smoking,
and then we run the wood gas into the engine.
And I have no idea if this is gonna work.
[engine turns over]
There ya go.
You got it going Morgan.
Let's get outta here guys.
Let's get outta here.
Whoo!
I can't believe it!
Morgan:
So, we’ll be able to start the truck from inside the cabin,
and now we've also found out
that the engine
Is in good, running order,
and the gasifier
Is hooked up to it,
and I think we’re gonna be able to get out of here soon,
so we're leaving, getting out of here.
[groans]
John V.: we're only taking the essentials-
Gasoline, our own personal bedding items,
our clothes, a gallon of water.
Okay.
Michael: Here Joey.
Michael: I put all the tools on the truck.
That's all I need -
Tools and the shirt
That I walked here with.
And that's all I’m leaving herewith.
[groans]
[metal scraping]
Amy:
Most of the stuff is on here.
It's loaded now.
I’m ready.
This is it.
We're jumping over the edge.
Okay. That's it.
I mean, that's what we can take.
We’re loaded.
Narrator:
Before the colonists leave,
John C. And Diane take
one last moment to say goodbye
And honor their son Sam.
One more Sam stone, honey.
I put 'em in the soap
and I put 'em in the water thing.
And I was thinking that I'd put it here in this building,
'cause we're leaving
Is that okay?
Did you write something?
- Yeah.
I had a son, Sam, who was 14 years old,
Who was killed in a traffic accident.
Soon after his death, we started making these stones.
They're just simple -made out of clay,
And they have his name written in them.
[sobbing]
John V., on his own, came up with the idea
Of making a small metal box,
Kind of a time capsule,
where we could put one of the Sam’s stones...
Alright, Sam...We love you.
..and actually welding that
into the structure of the building.
We just had one of those very emotional-breakdown moments,
And then we move on with our lives.
It's just part of loss and living.
[engines rumbling]
Okay, cool. Let's get outta here..
- Holy Sh[bleep]
All right, everybody, calm.
Everybody, to your positions.
They're at the gate.
Joey: Leilani, are we locked over here?
There are only about four to five that I can see.
They're holding at the main door.
Aw [bleep]
Narrator: in the final phase of the experiment,
Andre and his team of marauders have been instructed
to take control of the colonist's sanctuary.
They're not allowed to physically harm the colonists,
but the colonists don't know that.
Allison: Fire! Fire in the yard!
All right.
Amy, do what you need to do.
John, over there.
Let's roll!
Allison: Leilani, I'm headed up.
They're not in the yard yet.
Oh [bleep]
They knocked the gate down with a car!
Andre: I told you I d be back!
It's Andre!
It’s Andre!
Amy: Andre!
Joey: Coming to the front door!
[electricity crackles]
Anybody hit?! Anybody hit?!
Andre: You think this is gonna stop me?!
Michael: Let it go, Amy. Let him have it.
Let it go Amy!
You think it’s over?!
Bring your [bleep] down here and fight!
Allison!
- Guys!
John C.: You got it John!
[indistinct shouting]
Lock it up!
Lock it up!
Go!
- We got a breach! Get in here!
Come on!
[electricity crackles]
Go! Go!
Fall back!
John V.: yeah! Yeah!
Yeah! Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah! Burn!
[engine turns over]
Joey: there we go, John! Yeah, baby! Come on!
Lets go!
- John, Let's go!
Hop on the back of it!
Hop in that Ranchero!
Everybody s on?
Is everybody on?
Hold on!
- Hold on.
[all cheering]
Allison: Go! Go!
[all cheering]
Yeah!
Joey: Oh my God.
After all the work, after all the bickering,
the sweating, the [bleep]
We were finally on our way.
We finally did
what we needed to do.
With their home
now under marauder control,
they have only one choice
Drive south.
John V.: I thank god that everybody is safe
and looking forward to our destination,
where there's food, water, shelter, security
all the things we were looking for.
Narrator:
The colonists drive to their destination on the L.A. River,
which is no longer controlled by the marauders.
Joey: all right, all right, you guys. Hold on!
John V.: That feeling in the air of excitement
that, you know, you're going down there,
the wind's blasting in your face,
moving on to greener pastures.
Whoo!
Nothing is impossible.
That's my motto.
We wanted it bad enough,
and we weren't gonna take 'no' or a failure.
[horn honks]
What?
Try to get these people down there.
I'm staying in L.A.
I'll walk if I have to.
but, I'd rather take this.
This is my [bleep] city. I'm staying
- That's your decision, dude.
- I made it a while ago.
I wanted to get this truck going,
I've had this planned for a while.
- What's going on Joey?
What's going on?
Joey?
There's just something in here
Come on Joey?
Come on Joey.
Alright.
I love you guys.
- Are you leaving?
Leilani: I felt in my heart Joey was always the loner.
But to see him go, to have him
separate from us immediately,
so quickly...it did hurt.
I'll be praying for ya!
Morgan:
Joey wants to be a loner,
and he thinks he is a loner,
but he doesn't realize how much he needs other people.
He needs to change the way he thinks about it.
Being with a group saved his life.
- Good luck, Joey!
Good luck!
- Good luck, Joey!
- Good luck, Joey!
Good luck!
John C.: I said early on
that we were gonna build our way out of the colony,
and I'm just trying to figure out
if this truck is gonna get us where we need to go.
Allison: I hope this gets us to where we can go and rebuild
and not run out of food
and water before we get there.
Basically, I think the
Number-one thing I learned here
was that survival
Is an attitude.
It's about, you know, embracing the past
and embracing your memories,
but moving on and having hope and staying positive.
An immersive experiment
forces participants!
to confront challenges
they don't have to deal with in their normal, daily lives.
And through those struggles,
they learn things about themselves
they may never have discovered otherwise.
Vladimir: Truly being in this type of situation,
you sort of evolve into a family,
and you grow emotionally.
It really has changed something in me
In terms of what I thought was important
and what I might plan to do the rest of my life.
And it’s something that's growing inside me,
and I think that s pretty cool.
Amy: For some reason,
I felt like I would not survive because I was a female.
I am absolutely confident that I would be just fine.
And I have survived.
It’s not - it was just the fact
That I didn't need to prove it to
these guys that I had to survive.
It's just -
I needed to prove it to myself.
Michael: I don't think I’ve been in a tougher situation, really.
Period.
This is the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
We made the best of a bad situation.
If you want it bad enough you will do it.
And we all wanted it bad enough,
and that's why we, the colonists, all did it -
Got the hell out of here.
In the 21st century,
few people have the necessary skills
In order to survive a catastrophic event
a simulated disaster scenario
is an invaluable way to prepare.
Because disasters can happen at any time, with no notice.
John V.: hopefully, we'll never have to utilize
any of these skills that we did here.
It would be great if we just worked out
whatever problems we had in the world
that we wouldn't have to deal with this.
If, god forbid, this was to ever happen,
we'd know where to take it to and how to deal with it
