The Big O (1999–2003): Season 1, Episode 10 - Winter Night Phantom - full transcript

This is a city that's
lost its memory.

But Memories sometimes suddenly
appear out of the darkness.

Vous si gentil...

This phantom that Major Dan Daston
caught a glimpse of…

Was it really an afterimage of
something he saw long long ago?

Vous si gentil...

What's the matter?

I was dreaming.

Dreaming?

Every once in a while, I keep
having the same dream.

It's probably from when
I still had memories.

Casualties?

Including Sam Lawrence, an old-timer
in the Paradigm Justice Department...

...and two of his secretaries,
it comes to 46.

They all died instantly.

In other words, 43 were
innocent bystanders.

The M.O. is about the same as the bombing
at the Department of justice ten days ago.

What's the bomber after?

Why's he only after old men who have
already retired from Paradigm?

Major Dastun.

They say they've recovered
part of the detonator.

It should give us some clues.

I hope so.

Dan Dastun is a hard-nosed soldier.

He's thoroughly devoted
to his duties,

and is prouder of the work of the
Military Police than anything else.

In a different sense, he's as
needed in this city as I am.

An unknown language?

I'm not sure if it's
accurate to call it that,

but some illegible letters were
carved on part of the device.

This is it.

He's most likely a man to whom
romance has nothing to say.

What do you want?

Nothing, really.

I was in the area,
so I thought I'd drop in.

You expect me to believe that?

It does happen sometimes.

I don't know what this change of
heart is, but your timing's bad.

I'm up in front of an inquiry.

Do you know what
"Vous si gentil" means?

No, I've never heard
that language before.

Didn't think so.

As I've already explained,

this string of terrorist bombings
has inexplicable elements to it.

So, you're insisting that the bomber
is from somewhere other than the city.

In other words,
from another country?

I'm just saying that
it's a possibility.

Preposterous! The world's
been wiped out.

Paradigm City is all that
remains of civilization.

Begging your pardon,
sir, but I don't--

The Military Police are
to go on full alert...

...and root out the violent
elements that infest the city.

At once!

Is this for the best?

That man is in contact with that
Negotiator from time to time.

There's no need to make a fuss.

It won't hurt my plans for people to
learn of the existence of foreigners.

On the contrary, it may
even prove beneficial.

That board of inquiry
can kiss my ass!

Those bastards only think
of us as stupid watchdogs!

Aren't we?

We are Paradigm's
watchdogs, right?

I don't follow you, sir.

Just as I said.

Dastun, I'm taking you
off the investigation.

Pressure from the inquiry board, sir?

Think of it as a paid vacation.
Take it easy for a while.

Major Dastun.

One of these days, you need to
learn what justice is really about.

As far as I know, I
understand it perfectly, sir.

Tell me! Who are you?!

The terrorist bombing was again
targeted at a retired elder employee.

26 passengers on a nearby city
bus were killed in the explosion.

As well as a young police
officer who was on guard duty.

Wait! Please, stop!

I've never had a guest
this late before.

I doubt this is about a job
offer, right, Major Dastun?

Sorry. My feet just brought me here.

It happens sometimes.

It don't know when I saw it,

but I know that the dream is a scene
from an old movie I saw as a kid.

Snow was falling quietly onto a winter
sea that chills you to the bone.

The woman was shot.
Probably by the man she loved.

"Vous si gentil"?

It's probably the language
of some other country.

That's probably where
the movie was from.

So you saw the woman from
your dream in the flesh?

Go ahead and laugh. My head
must be totally screwed up.

If there's anything I can do
to help, just let me know.

Taking pity on your old boss?

No. I'm just a friend
who likes to meddle.

Dastun returned to duty
several days later.

It was highly irregular, but no
one voiced any complaints.

In this city, the decisions handed
down by a certain man are law.

But at this point, I don't care.

I'm just doing my best as a pro.

The woman Dastun saw...
Even if she's really an illusion,

he probably has to find an
answer that will satisfy him.

This is sure a
mismatched scene...

Oliver Garland, senior member
of the justice Department,

will be giving a speech tonight
in front of some children.

He represents the management of
the amusement park, I hear.

At a dangerous time like this?

I think the smartest thing to
do would be to call it off.

There's no figuring out how
a politician's mind works.

All we can do is faithfully
carry out our duties.

That's something that's
never changed about you.

Anyway, why don't you get to it?

You didn't come all the way
here just to be sarcastic.

The woman in your memories was
a real actress named Sybil Rowan.

But the only movie she starred in, Winter
Night Phantom, doesn't exist anymore.

They were all burned
thirty years ago...

I learned that when
Paradigm City was founded,

the current elders, who assisted the
original chairman, Gordon Rosewater,

expelled everyone with anti-government
leanings from the city.

Including that woman, Sybil...

Her beauty made her a symbol for
the anti-government groups.

Then, after severe pressure...

...they say she was thrown
into prison and died.

Died?

I also heard a rumor
along these lines:

They say that Sybil Rowan came
from a country far away.

Those are all the facts
that anybody knows now.

As for the phantom woman,
I still haven't--

Forget it. That's enough.

I'll repay you later.

All right.

Buy me a drink or something sometime.

Are all checkpoints secure?

There's no sign of explosives being
snuck inside the perimeter.

And even if the terrorists
did try to get in,

they'd never be able to break
through our security.

What is that?

Shit!

What a crude entrance.

Still, I suppose it's an appropriate
toy for crude foreigners.

Where? Where are they?

It can't be!

Big O! Showtime!

Tell me! Who are you?

A phantom.

A phantom?

One who grants eternal sleep
to an accursed past.

I can't believe they're
using a robot bomb!

Sol can't just go in swinging, huh?

I don't know what you're after, but
I swear you won't get away with it!

What you're doing is murder,
plain and simple!

You pathetic lapdog
of the authorities...

That's right! But even a
watchdog has his pride!

Thanks for the help!

Why did you do it?

I did what I thought was right.

And so did you.
That's all it amounts to.

It's strange...

I feel like I've known it would turn
out like this fora long, long, time...

I knew, too. For as long
as I can remember.

You're crying?

Vous si gentil...

There are no records of Sybil Rowan
having had a young daughter

Not to mention--

No, whatever the truth may be, there's no
need to keep digging up the lost past.

For Dan Dastun, those memories of a
far-off day may have been an illusion.
