*THE ADVENTURES OF PADDINGTON*
Season 01 Episode 06

[Paddington] Dear Aunt Lucy,
Episode Title: "Paddington and the Painting" 1 of 2

today I learned the harder something is,

the more it's worth doing.

[Scottish accent] Crumpets all round!

- Woohoo!
- Hurray!

[Playful music]

Thank you, Mrs. Bird.

Huh?

Mrs. Bird, I don't mean to be rude,

but my crumpet is full of holes.

Oh, wee bear,
all crumpets have holes in them.

Means you can fill them up
with extra marmalade!

What an incredible invention!

- [Jonathan] Can I have more?
- [Judy] There's plenty for everybody.

Everyone, I am pulling out
of the art show tonight.

Why has everyone gone quiet?

[Clap of thunder]

Why is there thunder?

There's always a clap of thunder

when something this dramatic happens.

- [Dramatic music]
- [sighs]

But you've been looking forward
to this competition for ages!

And now I'm going to have to cancel.

But why, Mrs. Brown?

- I don't know what to paint!
- Oh!

A picture, perhaps?

Paddington, it's not that simple.

You see, I need to paint the most amazing,

most inspiring thing I can think of.

I've been working for days
and I just can't find the right idea.

If you want amazing,

you should paint a ketchup man
with a crumpet for a head!

Who becomes Prime Minister!
Pretty inspiring.

Oh, great ideas.

But it needs to be one of my own.

- Oh, maybe I should just give up.
- [dramatic music]

Mrs. Brown,

Aunt Lucy says you should never give up.

But, Paddington,
I don't know what to paint.

- Then I'll help you think of something.
- [lively music]

Oh, you could enter
one of these paintings, Mrs. Brown.

None of these are finished, Paddington.

And even if they were,
I don't think they're good enough.

I wouldn't say that.
This horse is very good.

Yes, that's supposed to be a fish.

Hmm. I see.

[Mrs. Brown] Oh…

It's the blank canvas, Paddington!

[Mrs. Brown] It's so imposing!

There's so much space to fill!

- [Suspenseful music]
- I don't know where to start.

There. A dot.

It's not blank any more.

Hmm. I don't like the dot.

It's in the wrong place.

So, let's paint over the dot.

[Screams] Now it's a blank canvas again!

Oh!

I have an idea.

Now you can't see the blank canvas,
it shouldn't be a problem.

Oh, uh… Yes, but then
I won't know what I'm painting!

Which… actually could work!

Oh! Pa… Padding… Paddington… Paddington!

You're a genius!

It's time to paint!

[Cheerful music]

Now,

let's see our creation!

Oh, wow! [Laughs]

We painted everything…

Except my canvas.

Not to worry, Mrs. Brown.

If at first you don't succeed,
try and try again.

I'm sorry, Paddington, this isn't helping.

I think I need to clear my head.

[Meditation music]

[Paddington] Oh…

That is incredible, Mrs. Brown.

It's called yoga.

Yoga?

An exercise invented in India
over 5,000 years ago.

5,000 years?

It's amazing people can still remember it!

When you put yourself in yoga positions,

you become more relaxed.

But it has to be done in silence.

[Paddington slurps and chomps]

Oh, I see.

Sorry, Mrs. Brown.

- That's okay.
- I won't speak again.

- Thank you.
- You're welcome, Mrs. Brown...

- Paddington.
- Sorry.

I won't say another word.

Apart from those ones.

And those just then.

Why don't we do it together?

Yoga is all about breathing
to make you feel relaxed.

- [Mrs. Brown] So, breathe in…
- [breathes in]

- [Mrs. Brown] And out…
- [breathes out]

And in… [breathes in]

And out… [breathes out]

- And…
- [Paddington snores]

Paddington?

[Mrs. Brown] Paddington?

Oh! Good morning!

Oh, this is useless, Paddington.

Time's running out
and I still don't know what to paint.

Oh, maybe I should give up.

Mrs. Brown, you should never give up.

What you need is some fresh air.

[lively music]

There are lots of things
you could paint in the garden, Mrs. Brown.

You could paint… a beautiful flower.

Or the clouds. Or Pigeonton!

[Cooing]

Hmm.

Or this wonderful snail.

Oh, my, this snail appears
to have lost it's shell!

[Mrs. Brown] That's not a snail,
Paddington, it's a slug.

- Oh!
- And I don't want to paint a slug.

I'm supposed to be painting
something inspiring,

that makes you feel amazing.

And nothing out here
is making me feel like that.

Oh, have you thought of hugging a tree?

[laughing] Not since I was an art student.

Aunt Lucy used to do it
all the time in Peru.

She said it's a really
very lovely feeling.

[Paddington] Inspiring even.

Then let's do it!

How does it feel, Mrs. Brown?

Um… Woody?

- Let's try closing our eyes.
- Good idea.

[Soft music]

Paddington,

I'm actually starting
to feel a lot calmer.

- Me too.
- This is working.

I'm getting an idea for my painting!

I think it should be a… a…

[Mr. Curry] Ha! Hugging trees?

Well, I never. [Laughs]

What a load of mumbo jumbo!

Never seen anything so silly
in all my life!

[laughs]

I beg your pardon, Mr. Curry,
but what is wrong with hugging trees?

Well, it's just silly, isn't it?

Hugging.

Not the sort of thing that happens
in everyday life, is it?

Sounds to me like
you don't get hugged enough, Mr. Curry.

- I couldn't agree more, Mrs. Brown.
- [Mr. Curry laughs]

Whatever you say, bear!

You keep trying to remember
your idea, Mrs. Brown,

and I'll be right back.

There you go.

- [Paddington clears his throat]
- [screams]

Now, Mr. Curry.

- About this hugging business.
- Bear, how did you get in here?

There's a hole under your fence.
You should get that looked at.

Now, come on, Mr. Curry.

[Screams]

Let me give you a hug.

- [Crash]
- [funny music]

- Mr. Curry?
- [Mr. Curry] Oh, go away!

Oh!

And take your cuddles with you!

Mr. Curry, have you noticed

that you're now hugging a tree?

No, I'm not!

I am!

[Screaming]

[Soft music]

Ha…

Paddington,

I had no idea how much I needed this.

I feel warm,

and light and inspired!

I just want to create!

- [lively music]
- [humming]

[Chuckles]

- [Soft music]
- [sighs]

Even Mr. Curry is inspired and I still
don't have an idea for my painting.

[Paddington] It's not over yet,
Mrs. Brown.

[Sniffs]

Ah!

No good idea was had on an empty stomach.

I think it's time we eat.

Despite your help, Paddington,

I still haven't come up
with a single idea.

It's time to face facts and give up.

[Paddington slurps]

I really don't think you should…

Hold on.

Paddington,
I can chop that up if you like.

Hm-hm.

[Slurping]

[lively music]

[Music stops]

[Sigh of relief]

You really never give up on anything,
do you?

Ah! I've got an idea!
And it's right in front of me!

You're going to paint spaghetti?

It's you, Paddington.

I want to paint you.

I mean, what's more inspiring
than someone who never,

ever gives up?

[lively music]

[Paddington] I'd never been a model
before, Aunt Lucy.

But I must admit I found it very fun.

Mrs. Brown
was very happy with the painting

and she even won first prize!

It's actually inspired me
to take up painting myself.

Problem is, I don't know what to paint.

Love from Paddington.

Ah!

[Paddington] There.

[Paddington] Dear Aunt Lucy,
Episode Title: "Paddington Finds Buried Treasure" 2 of 2

we've all heard about buried treasure.

But did you know
the truth can be buried too?

Neither did I, until today.

[Rhythmic music]

This way for adventure!

To the galleon!

- Have at ye, ya scurvy swab!
- Oh!

- Oh!
- [chuckles]

No, thank you.

Paddington!

You're supposed to say pirate stuff!

Sorry, Jonathan,
but I don't know what that is exactly.

You know, pirate stuff!

Like…

"Walk the plank, ah-harr, me hearty!"

Oh, I see.

[Clears throat]

Ha, ha! My hearty!

- [Jonathan] What are you doing?
- I'm walking like a plank.

[Sighs] Let's just look
for buried treasure.

[Battle cry]

[Gasps]

[Judy] Um… Why are you digging?

Oh, we are looking for eight pieces.

No. Pieces of eight.

That's what I said. Jonathan thinks
we might find some buried treasure.

In the garden? Don't be silly.

We might! Pirates bury their treasure
all over the place.

Well, I think
you should stop making a mess.

- You won't find anything there.
- [Paddington gasps]

- What's this?
- [gasps]

Treasure!

See, Judy?

That's not treasure.
It's just a worthless bit of pottery.

You don't know.
It might be from a Roman vase!

Or a Viking vase! Or an Alien vase!

Aliens don't make vases.

Then where do they put their flowers?

Oh, this is silly.

- One tiny bit of pottery and…
- [Paddington gasps]

Not one.

Wow!

What do you think it is?

I don't know.

But I know who to ask.

[Mr. Gruber, Hungarian accent]
Interesting. Hmm. Hmm.

Very interesting.

[Gasps] What is, Mr. Gruber?

I knew Mr. Curry was using my bins!

That is interesting, Mr. Gruber,
but what about the pottery?

[Gasps] Ah, yes. Hmm…

- Is it Roman?
- Hmm… no.

It's like nothing I've ever seen before.

So it is Alien!
I told you they made vases.

It isn't Alien. Hmm…

And I don't think it's a vase either.

I told them it was nothing,
but they wouldn't listen.

[Mr. Gruber] Hmm.
A most strange artefact indeed.

Strange artefact or just junk?

Well, we mustn't be too hasty, Judy.

Hmm…

Paddington, would you help me
get my reference book?

Of course, Mr. Gruber.

Which book is it, Mr. Gruber?

[Mr. Gruber] The dusty one.

Ah!

[Coughs]

Oh! With respect, Mr. Gruber,
they're all fairly dusty.

Bring me the most dusty one of all.

- [Funny music]
- Hmm…

Oh!

[Soft music]

Got it.

Whoa!

- [Suspenseful music]
- [gasp]

Oh!

Sorry, Mr. Gruber.

No harm done, Paddington!

This is an original copy
of Romeo and Juliet

signed by the great Shakespeare
himself, but…

Everyone is safe, so back to the pottery!

[Suspenseful music]

[Gasps] It's gone!

Oh! But how?
We were only away for a moment.

Um… Maybe someone snuck in and took it.

Oh, well. Goodbye, old junk.

- But why would someone take it?
- Because it is treasure!

- And that person knew it!
- Let's not get carried away.

Besides, there's only us here.

And Mr. Curry, but he's gone.

[Gasps] Mr. Curry!

Mr. Curry?

He must have overheard us
talking about how valuable it was

and snuck in while our backs were turned.

Jonathan! Mr. Curry is a lovely,
kind-hearted, honest man,

who'd never do such a thing.

So, if we ask him if he took it,
he would give us an honest answer?

- Yes.
- So let's go ask him.

- Yes, I took it!
- [Paddington gasps] Mr. Curry!

I'm… I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.

It was a piece of junk!
So what if I took it?

But that's stealing!

No, it isn't. It's finders keepers.

Oh!

I'm sorry, Mr. Curry, but I rather
feel my world has just collapsed.

Well, it's our property,
and we want it back.

Then you shouldn't have left it
by the recycling.

By the recycling?

Yes!

How am I supposed to know
you want to keep something

if you've thrown it out?

But if it means that much to you,
you can take the broom handle back.

Broom handle?

I'll just have to find something else
to prop my cupboard closed.

[Sighs] Every single time.

Huh?

Well, I'm relieved to say there seems
to have been a misunderstanding.

Ever so sorry for wasting your time.

So, if Mr. Curry didn't take
the treasure, then who did?

- [Gasps] Look!
- [suspenseful music]

This is one of the pieces!

[Gasps] It's here!

Someone did take it,
and threw it away in our bin!

Oh! This gets stranger and stranger.

Hmm.

We're going to have
to stick these back together.

- How can we possibly do that?
- [Mr. Gruber laughs]

Using glue, of course!

You only need the tiniest amount.

- There.
- Oh!

Wow!

Would you like a go?

No, no. You're the expert.

[Rhythmic music]

Oh!

Hmm.

Huh?

[Accordion]

Don't mind me!

[Soft music]

[Mr. Gruber] There.

It seems to be some kind of statue.

A really valuable statue?

- I'm afraid this isn't valuable.
- [sighs]

But there does seem to be an inscription.

"A token of my love
for dear Mr. Squishy Bottom."

[Accordion]

Are you stuck to my accordion?

Oh, I wouldn't say stuck.

[Accordion]

More like really stuck.

- [Gentle music]
- [Jonathan sighs]

I suppose we have to accept
it's just junk after all.

- Oh, look!
- That isn't junk at all!

No, Mr. Brown? Then what is it?

Oh, that's the first piece of artwork
I ever made.

It was a gift for your father
when we first met.

It even has an inscription on it, which…
You didn't read that, did you?

- Of course not, Mr. Squishy Bottom.
- [laughter]

I haven't seen this in ages.
I thought it was lost.

But why is it all glued together?

- It was broken.
- We found it buried in the garden.

What? Who put it in the garden?

- I did.
- [all gasp]

You?

Yes.

- Me.
- [soft music]

Oh, so that's why
you've been behaving strangely.

I'm sorry, but I broke it,

and I felt so bad,
I didn't know what to do, so I hid it.

And when Paddington found it,
I tried to throw it away.

I'm so sorry.

You have told the truth now
and that's the main thing.

It really was an accident, Mum.

[Judy] I was practising gymnastics
in the living room.

I didn't even touch it and it shattered.

I don't know how it happened.

[Sighs] I might be able
to shed some light on that.

[Mr. Brown] You see, Judy,
I broke that statue long before you did.

I was carefully positioning
my all-male choir trophy

when I accidentally
knocked it off the mantelpiece.

I felt guilty, so I just sort of
balanced all the pieces together

and hoped no one would notice.

I should have owned up myself.

Sorry.

Well, if we're all being honest,

I was happy it went missing.

[Judy and Mr. Brown] What?

Well, it isn't exactly
the best statue I ever made.

And I always kind of felt
like it was watching me.

Wait. So let me get all this straight.

It really, really, really isn't treasure?

I'm afraid not.

Oh, I don't know.

It seems to have brought
everyone a lot closer.

And that seems pretty valuable to me.

So, what do we do with it now?

There's only one thing we can do.

[Soft music]

[Paddington] So, you see, Aunt Lucy,
you can try to hide the truth,

but it always comes out in the end.

And usually that's a good thing,

because once it does,
you can finally put it to bed.

And after all the excitement,

bed sounds like just the place for me.

Love from Paddington.
