Terim (2022–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - S01E01 - full transcript

Terim's instincts to change up the team's game-time philosophy pay off as Galatasaray begins a run of consecutive Turkish League championships.

I LIVE FOR GALATASARAY.
WHAT MATTERS IS GALATASARAY.

This is not an easy story.

It took almost a lifetime
and major sacrifices

for me to reach this point in the story.

It wasn't easy.

Fatih Terim, the soccer player.

Fatih Terim, the captain.

Fatih Terim, the coach.

Fatih Terim, the father.

Fatih Terim, the grandfather.

Fatih Terim, the emperor.

If you think about it, it's pretty clear
how things will progress from here.

I like to think of myself as experienced.
I like to think I saw a lot.

But I've seen zilch.

Considering what I've been through,
everything just keeps surprising me.

Head Coach Fatih Terim
has officially left Galatasaray.

I and people like me
have countless stories,

and our story never ends.

A NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY

I'm Fatih Terim.

I'm a family man who's happy

and likes to learn and improve
no matter how old I am.

A man who's proud of the lives
he touched, changed, and built.

A man who despises losing.

If it were possible,

I'd like to win every cup in existence.

FATİH TERİM
HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY

Why did I agree to this project?

What people have achieved
tends to be forgotten so quickly.

Sometimes, you yourself
struggle to remember.

When people remind you,
you go, "Wow. Did I do all that?"

Let's travel through time
and see what I've achieved.

Honestly, I'd like to see
and listen as well.

MAGDEBURGER INSURANCE

Fatih Terim,

who has quit the national team
after the European Cup,

started his new job
as the head coach of Galatasaray today.

I hope this bodes well
for us and Galatasaray fans.

Thank you all.

Terim, who had played for the club
for 11 years,

is going to be a head coach
for the first time.

There's an unfortunate side

to managing big teams.

Any result but winning the league

won't satisfy people at all.

The Turkish league was my primary concern
when I first started, to be honest.

I don't like the word "luck,"
but it was an unfortunate period.

Why? They hadn't been champions

for the last two years.

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş were
the last two champions.

The club hadn't seen much success
in European competitions.

That's how the climate was
when I started in '96.

I got to work right away.

If you look at today's world,

captains like Fatih Terim
or players who left a mark on their teams...

JOURNALIST

...start as head coaches
almost a year after they retire.

But it took Fatih Terim ten whole years
to return as the head coach

after he quit Galatasaray as a player.

When you think about it today,
after all the success he had,

maybe he should've come sooner.

But I think Turkey didn't have
the vision or the atmosphere

where they could appoint people
who were 35, or maybe 40,

as the head coach of clubs
like Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, or Beşiktaş.

Let's put it this way.

People didn't trust me initially,

not as much as they trusted me
after my success.

No matter what anyone says,
that's the reality.

That's the truth.

As with every community,

there can be people

who don't exactly see you succeeding

within your own community.

So you naturally want to prove yourself

to the club you work for and to yourself.

You want to embarrass people
who didn't believe in you.

You get engulfed in emotions
that make you want to fight.

JUNE 22, 1996

Good morning. It's Saturday, June 22.

Galatasaray, who started training
for the new season,

held a meeting in Florya
with their new head coach, Fatih Terim.

When I arrived, the club had
a list of players they wanted gone.

They wanted to sell them.

Suat and Okan were supposed to leave.

I distinctly remember

how Bülent Korkmaz was
almost loaned out to Bursaspor.

JOURNALIST

Coach kept them all.

He had already made his plan.
He didn't let them go.

After doing basic physical exercises
for a while,

I focused on technical exercises
and exhibition matches.

I altered the game plan
and the system a bit.

I introduced a fundamental change
in the team's approach on the pitch.

The math didn't change much,

but the mentality was seriously different.

What changed on the pitch? Let's see.

FORMER PLAYER

I have this memory.

We always laugh about it.

It was the first week.
I don't remember which session.

We had started training
together as a team.

I loved keeping the ball to myself
when I used to play.

I wouldn't let go of the ball easily.

I dribbled past a defender,
then another one.

Then I tried the third one.

I did something stupid and lost the ball.

I kept saying, "Pass the ball, Okan,"
but he was used to doing tricks.

I got mad.

Coach blew the whistle
and stopped the training.

I asked for a ball.
I gave it to Okan so he could enjoy it.

He handed the other ball to the team,
and they kept playing.

So we had two balls on the pitch.

I had completely forgotten
about the press and the fans.

I was mad at myself too.

I had lost my temper.

I wouldn't have done it in front of them.

I didn't take any offense,

because you truly have to
surrender yourself to the coach

when you're playing.

Especially the first days and weeks.

From time to time,
coaches want to send certain messages.

You sometimes make an example of a player,

and sometimes you tell the entire team.

So on that day,
Coach sent his message through me.

Let's say he started running.

My team was working almost 24/7

to prepare for the new season

and to sort the lineup out.

So we were racing against the clock.

Day by day, the lineup was taking shape

in my head.

A lot of young players joined.

Let's begin.

And the foreign players...
Popescu, for instance.

FORMER VP, GALATASARAY

There was Taffarel.

There were others too.

GALATASARAY EX-PRESIDENT

The first year, our stars
were Ilie on the left,

Filipescu on defense,
and Hagi in the midfield.

HAGI'S COMING - GALATASARAY IN TALKS
WITH THE ROMANIAN PLAYER.

Hagi was about to go to Mexico,

but he joined Galatasaray
for a hefty sum back then.

JOURNALIST

He got five million dollars a year.
Expensive back then.

Let's admit that Fatih Terim...

I mean, who wouldn't want
a player like Hagi?

He wanted him, and from what I heard,

he even told the club to cut his own pay
if budget was an issue.

I saw a man with a powerful character.
I knew he was a leader from day one.

FORMER PLAYER

He knew what he wanted.

I knew that he had coached
the national team,

that he was strong-willed,
that he really wanted me on the team.

The chaotic transfer process of Hagi
that had been going on for days

was at last finalized yesterday
with the Romanian player signing.

The journey started

amid all the reservations

Galatasaray fans
and the members of the press had.

"Will he be able to continue the success
he had with the national team here?"

That was the climate

when I started working.

Then the league kicked off.

WILL GALATASARAY BE ABLE TO SUCCEED
WITH FATİH TERİM?

Naturally, there were questions

even though Fatih Terim had arrived...

JOURNALIST

...as a Galatasaray legend.

He had been the captain.

He had played countless games.

But there had been a certain period
they weren't able to win the league.

That was his baggage.

That was another thing
that cast doubt on him.

Let's start from the beginning.

Back when I was just a boy,

as with all boys back then,

my sole focus

was soccer and the soccer ball.

Two rocks here, two rocks there.

We played a lot of games like that.

I played all day on the streets

paying no mind
to the heat, the cold, or the rain.

That's how I started.

Everyone used to come and watch him.
He had amazing technique.

No one could even come near him.

CHILDHOOD FRIEND

You couldn't be like,
"I'll tackle him and get the ball."

He'd just destroy and embarrass you.

Then he went to vocational school.

He was on the school team.

Everyone knew his name.

People in Adana
just loved Adana Demirspor.

As a professional team, I mean.
There were a lot of amateur clubs, but I...

My father took me
to Adana Demirspor directly.

ADANA DEMİRSPOR FACILITIES

They intended for me to play
on the youth team of Demirspor

but then put me
on the first team right away.

DEMİRSPOR GREETS THE CONQUERORS OF CYPRUS

When the game kicked off...
I can't even begin to tell...

MOTHER

He was something else.
People kept asking whose son he was.

We heard all that, of course.

Then his father couldn't resist,
so he climbed up the stairs

and asked, "You know who that kid is?"

A person replied, "No, sir."

"Fatih Terim," he said.

Just that. "Fatih Terim."

"He's my son," he added.

His original coach was his father.

Talat supported him from the get-go.

He knew a lot about soccer.

He was a good father.

A loyal person,
just like everyone else in his family.

His mother always gives him instructions.

She gives her comments
before and after the game.

Even the TV commentators
can't hold a candle to her.

Son?

You have training? Okay.

When do you start?

Tell them to play well, though.

Tell them that's what your mom said.

What was his name... Isn't he leaving?

Falco.

Isn't it Falco? Did I say it wrong?

But why... But everyone's laughing.

Mom's obsessed with it.

She just loves it.

YOUNGER SISTER

There's just no way
she misses any of his games.

Dad too. They were both so interested.

He always told my mom,
"Nuriye, our son is a gift from God."

"God sent him to us."

Towards the end,

Talat was so proud of him, naturally.

You know, his soccer career in Adana...

LOCAL NEWSPAPER OWNER IN ADANA

...actually didn't last that long.
Galatasaray snatched him up.

FATİH'S JOURNEY FROM ADANA TO GALATASARAY

My transfer to Galatasaray

was pretty eventful.

Metin was one of the biggest players ever.

His fame, his kindness, his abilities...

He was just adored.

That guy pushed for my transfer.

Clubs used to kidnap players
back then, so to speak.

They'd just snatch players up.

Fatih was at an away game

with the national youth team.

We flew back and landed.

The tarmac was packed.

I saw one of our coaches there.

Nuri was there.

I was surprised to see him and thought,

"They came all the way from Adana for me?"

He was with Metin

and Ali Yavaş.

Apparently, Ali had just been transferred
from Altay to Galatasaray.

It's strange.
I remember it like it was yesterday.

FORMER TEAMMATE

I said to him,
"Look. I signed the contract."

"I'll be here."

"I'd like it if you joined me,

but the call is yours to make."

But then Nuri said,

"Adana doesn't like this."

"Both the club and the city.
We won't let you go."

"Come on, man."

Fatih was like a son to them.

He wasn't just a player.

Their relationship was amazing.

They were like brothers.

Of course it upset us.

We didn't want such a guy to leave.

The city and the club were devastated.

But after all,

he wanted Galatasaray too.

Metin said,

"Nuri, look,

people in Adana love me. I love them too."

"You and I can go together.
Let Fatih stay here."

"He won't return if he comes with us."

"I know them well. They won't let him go."

So there we were.

"Sign it," he said.

I looked at Nuri.

He was finally okay with it.

So I signed.

DEMİRSPOR'S FATİH SIGNS FOR GALATASARAY.

The young player joined Galatasaray
for a 1,400,000 signing fee.

Everybody can visit Istanbul nowadays.

But back then, most couldn't.

So I had a hard time adapting.

I'd have had trouble if not for Ali.

Ali never left my side.

He had just gotten married.
He considered me family.

We're like blood brothers, the two of us.

He's a very good friend of mine.

We were inseparable.

We went everywhere together.
We left everywhere together.

Naturally, I got used to it with time.

Once I got used to it,
there was no turning back.

It was an unfortunate time.

As you might remember,

Trabzonspor had
a legendary team back then.

The atmosphere
created by the legendary team...

THE LORDS OF THE LEAGUE: TRABZON
HAIL THE CHAMPIONS OF 1978-79

...affected Galatasaray
and other Istanbul teams badly.

THE FIRST TIME
THE CHAMPIONS AREN'T FROM ISTANBUL

GALATASARAY'S LONGING FOR CHAMPIONSHIP
THEY BARELY AVOID RELEGATION

We were a part of that fiasco.

But believe me when I say this,

we, especially Fatih,
since I didn't stay that long,

always played remarkably.

He always performed spectacularly.

They even made him play defense.

He prevented so many goals.

He scored a lot. He made a lot of assists.

He tackled. He pressed hard.

But he always played well.

Galatasaray didn't, though.

He's looking for a chance.
He shoots and scores!

A nice shot.

There's so much to say about Coach.

He wouldn't accept defeat.

He was hot-headed, ambitious,

but most importantly,
so quick on his feet.

I remember how he prevented a goal
just before it passed the line.

And Fatih clears the ball.

He was magic, you know.

He always managed to do impossible things.

HEAD COACH / FORMER PLAYER

He did it to me once.
I wanted to strangle him.

It was an Altay-Galatasaray game.

I was in the penalty area.

It was a done deal.
I even started celebrating in my head.

Just as I was about to shoot,
I saw a shadow figure snatch the ball.

It was him.

I may have whispered him a few words then.

How much did you play
for the national team?

This is going to be my 55th match.

I believe you'll be setting
a record in Turkey.

Yes.

If I play, I'll be the record-holder
of most national matches played.

He was nimble, fast, skilled.

A great organizer too.
He was the complete set.

FORMER PLAYER / ASSISTANT COACH

There were players
who had a few of his qualities,

but only Coach had all of them at once.

Who did I play like? Let's see...

I'd say Suat,

but he wasn't as skilled.

I'd say Ergün,

but his right foot was weak.

I'd say Hagi,
but his left foot was better.

An amazing goal!

Fatih?

In terms of playing style?

Definitely Melo.

Combative, tough.

He got into a lot of fights.

A guy so focused on winning
is bound to be combative.

He can't be meek.

The referee shows a red card to Fatih,

sending him off
in the last minute of the game.

"Combative" sounds about right.

I can't object to that.

I may have raised my voice

or done certain things

here and there.

It fits well.

Fatih shoots. It bounces off the wall.

He shoots again.
Galatasaray scores for the second time.

The captain has managed to score

on his second attempt after the ball...

In soccer, just like in any other sport,
everyone has aims.

We play to win cups and championships.

Fatih approaches the ball.

He shoots and scores.

Fatih scores at the 26th minute.

Not being able to win the league
throughout all those years

while carrying all that responsibility

might have become
a driving force for Fatih

in his new position as the head coach
in the coming years.

I had won the Turkish Cup.

I had competed in the UEFA Cup.

I had finished second, third...

I had won the Presidential Cup,

the Prime Minister's Cup,

but not the Turkish league.

So I thought I should do it

as a coach.

Fatih Terim's Galatasaray
is getting ready for their first game.

Ümit gets the ball.
He wants to shoot. He goes for it!

What a magnificent goal! Ümit scores...

Van Gobbel's there.

Hagi shoots and scores!

ALMOST CHAMPIONS
GALATASARAY PASSES THE ANTALYA HURDLE

Good morning.
It's Saturday, September 8th.

Today is derby day.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe

will be facing each other
for the 328th time today.

Come on! Let's go!

No matter how much
you're disinterested in soccer,

when it's Galatasaray against Fenerbahçe,
life comes to a halt in this country.

It really creates a lot more chatter

than a Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş game
or a Galatasaray-Beşiktaş game.

JOURNALIST

It's a rivalry
between the fans and the communities.

I felt it even after I retired.

The GS-FB derby was still something else
even in the veteran cups we held.

They still had fights.
There wasn't even a crowd, but still.

Just ask Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray fans.

WHAT TIME IS IT?

Fener is the biggest.

There's no question.

We had a joyful rivalry back then.

FENERBAHÇE EX-PRESIDENT

It's an eternal rivalry.

It started over a century ago, you know.

It's a good rivalry.

I find it nice.

It's not fabricated.

It came to be on its own.

Just two teams against each other.

We do get on each other's nerves a lot.

SEPTEMBER 8, 1996
ALİ SAMİ YEN STADIUM

Welcome, all.

There's a perfect atmosphere
at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

It's going to be a brutal match.

Muhittin Boşat gives the signal

and the big game begins.

He tries going in the box.

A powerful shot! Rüştü! A corner kick.

Can Saffet control it? He's in the box.

A serious chance. He shoots!
It's in the net! Goal!

The name is Saffet Sancaklı.

We conceded the worst goals.

FORMER PLAYER / FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

I remember a certain one
from Jay-Jay Okocha. It was a free kick.

Once it starts going,
the morale of the team dips.

It's all downhill after that.

It's raining goals at Ali Sami Yen!

Yeah. Here's the fourth.

Fenerbahçe beats Galatasaray four to nil.

The score of the game
at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul

is Galatasaray 0, Fenerbahçe 4.

It gets lonely. Think about it.
No one criticizes even your assistants.

It's your fault and your fault only.

You're the target.

You're the failure.

Your past success doesn't matter.

What you say doesn't matter.

It's all about today and the future.

No one cares about the past.

No one acknowledges it.

That's the kind of game soccer is.

I think that Fenerbahçe game

was a serious breaking point

throughout Galatasaray history.

It was a home game too.

We even heard the crowd chanting
for Fatih Terim to resign.

People thought
he couldn't handle Galatasaray.

They thought he built the team wrong
and he made wrong transfers.

So the prospects for the future were grim.

FATİH TERİM IS FEELING TERRIBLE!
HE KEPT SILENT AFTER THE FENERBAHÇE GAME.

People started grumbling.
Some of them got louder too.

There were silent screams, so to speak.

I was the Emperor when I arrived.

I check the TV the next day,
and everyone wants me to resign.

CİM-BOM IS BLEEDING OUT

No one likes to be in that atmosphere

you get stuck in after losses,

but we felt even worse,
because that's how Coach felt.

I'd say he's more mature,
more understanding

in comparison to those days.

But Coach was 43 back then.

He couldn't contain himself
in '96 when he arrived.

That brought success.

There's no such thing

as a person, a team, a group
that never loses.

But those losses
need to be carefully analyzed.

Why? So that you can improve.

Your performance will suffer
if you don't do that.

I wanted to make a change in the system.

A change of tactics.

I came in one morning.

I asked for my assistants.
Bülent, Müfit, and Eser.

I said, "This is what I'm thinking.
What do you say?"

There are three parts in a team.

Defense, midfield, offense.

So a 4-4-2 formation means four defenders,

four midfielders, and two forwards.

But Coach presented his own take

of the 3-5-2 formation.

Three defenders,
five midfielders, and two forwards.

That's what he showed us.

"Let's turn it upside down," he said,
and he did so.

"This is how we're playing."

Okan has it.

It's Filipescu. He shoots and scores!

It's a goal. Galatasaray leads by one.

It encouraged the players.

I mean, five midfielders...

They were all like,

"If they can get past five midfielders,
let them score. So be it."

I know we always say this,
but it's difficult to do.

He was trying to create a team

that ran a lot, passed a lot,
and does forward pressing.

And indeed, when we started playing well,

the opposing players

started joking around like,

"Do they have 14 players?"
"It's like they have an extra man."

When the opponent was unable to breathe
because of how hard we pressed them,

that meant they had surrendered
to Galatasaray already.

A cross into the box...

He shoots with his right and scores!

He wants to hit it. And goal!

Galatasaray knew how to win,

and we will keep doing it.

Another one! It's 4-1.

After this last match of the season,

Galatasaray's championship
will be official

and they'll be awarded the cup.

A strong header! The ball is in the net.

Here's Bülent with the cup.

Tugay's with him.

Here they are
with the 1996-1997 Championship Cup.

I'm happy, of course. I'm very happy.

I'd like to thank everyone.

I remember how thrilled I was.

I was excited like a kid
who scored 100 out of 100 on his exam.

Because that first championship

paves the way for you

to do the things you want to do faster.

In this line of work,

you never have a lot of time,
to be honest.

You win the league
and hold a press conference,

and one of them asks you immediately,

"Will the success continue?"

Becoming champions is always hard.

It takes a lot of work.

It takes a lot of time and effort.

It takes a lot of sacrifice.

But there's this other reality

that we must never forget.

What's that?

After you become champions,

everyone wants to beat the champions
and take them down.

Everyone wants to bring their coach down.

That makes each successive championship
a bit harder.

I think that on the second year,

around August, September, or December...

The team was more determined
to compete on the European stage then.

THE LEAGUE HITS GALATASARAY HARD
ANKARAGÜCÜ HAS BROUGHT THEM DOWN

GALATASARAY'S LOSING STREAK CONTINUES

Terim takes off his jacket.

Tugay... It hit the bar!

Here's Fatih Terim.

FATİH TERİM LOSES PATIENCE

We were behind by nine points.
I think it was a Gençlerbirliği game.

We can't take it anymore.
We won't lose any more points.

I mean, we intend not to.

He jumps for a header. Goal!

Gençlerbirliği 3, Galatasaray 2.

A breathtaking 90 minutes.

Here's Fatih Terim feeling sorry
because of the loss.

Galatasaray was hit
unexpectedly hard by Gençlerbirliği

and suffered an unexpected loss.

After that game, I thought I should quit

since people were coming down
on Galatasaray because of me.

I take all responsibility.

If mistakes were made,
I was the one responsible.

I'll talk to him.

We still trust him.

We're not going to change our coach
because of three losses.

We'll see. We'll talk to him.

Every loss is an opportunity

for people who weren't happy
when you were appointed.

There was an exemplary relationship,
one that we should envy today,

between the coach and the management.

They were always there for me.

Today's meeting
between club management and Fatih Terim

took three hours.

The management
didn't accept his resignation

and decided to keep working with him.

The head coach will stay.

It's not surprising
he made such a statement

after the terrible loss yesterday.

The coach and the management
are in this together.

When you trust someone

and embark on a journey with them,

you have to stay together.

Of course you'll face obstacles.

You have to take them on together.

I always say this.

Faruk Süren and Fatih Terim were
in the right place at the right time.

We went to the training camp
in Marmaris right around then.

I still get goose bumps.
That camp reinvigorated us.

FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

The players believed in it so much.

We felt that we succeeded
when we saw them play.

Our job was done. We trained hard, though.

We dialed down everything
that was a cause of stress for them.

We were always together.

That helped our relationships improve.

We also told them

they could discuss any issue with us,

including family issues.

Because we were the biggest family.

Think about it.
We sometimes trained three times a day.

When you push a player so hard,

if you don't relieve him mentally,

his performance is going to suffer.

Among all the coaches I had,

the one who let us be free
on and off the pitch the most

was Fatih Terim.

People might not know this about him,

but we were incredibly free.

THE NIGHT OWLS GOT CAUGHT

What?

I'm all for handing the keys
to the burglar.

It's just my mentality.

If you hand him the key, he won't steal.

What's there to steal?
He knows he already has the key.

He'd steal otherwise.

So I express my trust in them
every chance I get,

but they also know

I've been there as well.

My team's not going to fall for anything.

I won't name names,

but a player was with his girlfriend

at a bar, a café, maybe a restaurant.

But he was supposed to be home.

Anyway, he asks for the bill.

The waiter says, "No need."

"What do you mean?" he asks.
The guy goes, "Fatih Terim paid for you."

That's why I always say
Terim has eyes everywhere.

Finding out Terim paid your bill
means it's over for you.

You start dreading the next day
thinking what's going to happen.

You don't want to go, even.

Fatih Terim never leaves
anything to chance.

If you ask me,
the hardest part of being a coach

is the balancing act.

You have to balance everything
so delicately...

You have both famous stars

and young players on the team.

I think Hagi was a big anchor.

Hagi was a very difficult star.

He wasn't a person
you could easily manage.

A huge ego.

I mean, I'd have a huge ego too
if I were Hagi.

I always want to win.

There was a home game one day.

We were in the lead by two.

I wasn't happy, though.

I talked a lot during the break.
I was agitated.

I was mad at my teammates
because we weren't...

Hagi just barged in

and went, "We have to do this thing!"
"Why did this happen?"

"Why didn't we do such and such?"

Coach walked in as he was talking.

...playing as well as we should've been
even if we were winning.

Coach said,
"You can stop, Hagi. I'm here now."

Hagi said, "No stop! I talk!"

Then he said it again.

I kept going on
about how we needed to be better.

"You know everything, huh?
Go take a shower!"

Hagi's nose turns beet red

when he's mad or embarrassed,

so his nose went red.

Then he drew the formation on the board,
and I wasn't there.

He wasn't in it.

That was the first shock for us.

"If he does this to Hagi,
God knows what he can do to us."

I understood then and there

that a leader can show you he's a leader
without uttering a single word.

It's weird, right?

FORMER PLAYER / FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

He's such an unusual coach
in comparison to others.

He's a very relaxed guy during training.

He conveys that in the way he dresses,

the way he talks and communicates.

It's so easy to talk to him as a player.

I got to know him quickly.

FORMER PLAYER

I remember an incident

that helped me understand his character.

Five days after I arrived,

we were in Florya

and I had my feet on the table.

It wasn't exactly
an appropriate thing to do.

He came downstairs, saw me,
and he just made a gesture.

It meant, "Put them down."

It was then I realized
whom I was dealing with.

I think it takes skill

to make them do things
they can't or won't on the pitch.

We achieved that.

For Hagi and others to play well,

they need to believe in their coach,
like their teammates, and be happy.

We check every box.

You have to figure all of that out

before they set foot on the pitch.

You have to make them

focus on the opponent and the game
with a clear head.

I think I managed
to do that pretty well back then.

That's pretty much it.

You can't succeed otherwise.

You have to live together,
laugh together, cry together.

That's what makes a good team.

After all, we did have a happy ending.

Then we got addicted to it.

You'll start playing as champions,

and hopefully,
you'll return here as champions.

Come on, guys!

Let's go, gentlemen!

Come on!

A through pass to Ümit.

He's against the keeper. Goal! 2-0!

A perfect shot from Hagi.

Tugay shoots and scores! Goal!

Here's a cross.
He jumps for a header and sends it in!

What a header. Galatasaray is winning 2-1.

He shoots, and it's in the net!

Yılnur Önen blows the whistle.

Galatasaray has won the league.

They pose with the cup together.

1997-98 champions, Galatasaray.

Getting ahead by four points
when they were nine points behind

just proves
how big of a team Galatasaray is.

We're so happy.

I may have the medal on my neck,

but it actually belongs
to the coaches and the players.

-A team effort?
-It's a team effort.

This is my garden.

I have all sorts of plants here.

This is where I decompress

and relax.

I don't think when I'm here.

It's the ideal place
for me to clear my head.

Look.

This one needs attention.

We have two roses blossoming.

It's the most beautiful thing.

The colors, the smells...

Nature just impresses me.

I love it.

I take good care of my trees.

So I'm not just
working things out on the pitch.

I try to work things out
when I'm out in the world as well.

We don't use the word "reconstruction."
We've always called it "redesign."

Coach is basically allergic
to the word "reconstruction."

He started redesigning the team.

That's why he asked for a science board.

That's why
the full-fledged academy building

and Turkey's first video archive
analysis department was built.

It might sound simple now,
but we didn't have anything back then.

Full-time psychologists
both for the first team and the academy.

Just incredible.

Nutrition experts prepared our meals.
We had three meals a day at the facility.

Those felt like a dream
back in those days.

As hard it is for people to believe,

we're talking about a person
who's open to teamwork and innovation.

Maybe the press has failed to convey that.

His all-out mentality,

his all-out leadership...

You can suddenly see Fatih Terim

having breakfast in the academy

because he's concerned
about what the kids are eating.

If he sees anything he doesn't like,

the meals suddenly change and stuff.

There are so many things
that are handled behind the scenes.

We just don't know,

and it needs to be told

by someone who was actually there.

Coach's revolutionary approach
to the youth team is still the same.

His reactions, his excitement,
his concern for the kids...

He's always like that.

When you seriously

put in the effort,

it's the one true place

that will save your future.

It's because I know that to be the case,

I try to change and improve the academy

every time I coach Galatasaray.

I manage to discover a few talents there

every time I'm here.

You're like 13 or 14,
and Fatih Terim watches your games,

even your training sessions.

We used to get so excited.

PLAYER

He would do things
a regular foreign or local coach wouldn't.

He used to come watch
15 or 16-year-old kids at the academy

and have them train with the first team.

I'll tell you briefly.

However we play,

the first team,

you all play the same way.

It's the same for every age group.

Galatasaray starts its plays
from the backfield.

Galatasaray imposes
its own game plan on the opponent.

It takes control of the game.

Galatasaray always plays
in the opponent's half of the field.

We are Galatasaray.

Any result but a championship

won't count as success for us.

-Take care.
-Thanks, Coach.

See you all.

The academy pitch and the first team pitch
are 60 feet apart.

There's this iron gate.

We used to check it out.

We always saw joy and laughter over there.

It was such that their happiness
could be felt on the pitch.

The team was happy.

That's who Fatih Terim is.

I watched foreign coaches
in Florya as well.

They arrived at the facilities
one hour before the training,

gave tactics, supervised the training,

then went home.

That's what Galatasaray is to them.

But for Fatih Terim,
who was basically raised by the club,

it's more than just a workplace.

He was always
the last one to turn out the lights.

That's what a leader does.

In this context, that's the head coach.

He's the one responsible.

He has to exact authority and discipline

with his demeanor, his style,

and his approach to leadership.

In no way were those four years

effortless for me.

Trabzon and Fenerbahçe had amazing teams.

Beşiktaş, also very good.

It wasn't easy what I did, you know.

But having a team that can score

does make taking it to the next level
so much easier.

Because then
you have something to protect.

You can say, "Shut it. I'm winning."

"But I'm not playing well? I will."

"If I'm already winning
without playing well,

who knows what I can do if I play well."

Whatever the circumstances,

all 11 of you need to play together.

As a team.

I need men who will stand by me!

Make me proud, guys.

Make me proud.

Let's go! Come on!

Hagi shoots. Goal!

It's in!

A cross into the box. A header... Goal!

He scores!

It's a goal!

They're about to receive the cup.

Here are the champions
celebrating with the cup.

Galatasaray celebrates the championship.

Go, Cim-Bom!

We're Fenerbahçe fans, but kudos to them.

The three championships we won
are in the past now.

We aim for the fourth successive one

and to exceed ourselves
in the Champions League now.

With every successive championship,

the responsibility gets bigger.

After the first and second ones,
we used to say to Coach,

"Coach, come on. Just make it three."
Then, "Just make it four."

The expectations never end
when you're a big club.

There always comes a moment

where they say, "Coach, we're tired
of winning the Turkish league."

So what's next?

"Off to the European stage."

OFF TO THE EUROPEAN STAGE
THE SEASON HAD A HAPPY ENDING

1999-2000 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW CEREMONY
MONACO

The group seems so easy.

The press always says it's an easy group

without considering
the level the rivals are at.

I'm saying it myself this time.

I mean, in theory,
what would you think is going to happen?

Milan and Chelsea, top two.

If you're a reasonable person,
you'd say Galatasaray might be the third.

Maybe Hertha. In theory, I mean.

But when it started,
we all saw how things went differently.
