16 Kiwi castaways battle it out to win the ultimate title

This is Nicaragua, where these 16 New Zealanders are about to begin the adventure of a lifetime.

I know nothing about Nicaragua. I had no idea where it was. I actually didn't know where South America or North America was.

So I guess it's a massive shock because I'm from a little small town.

It is the biggest country in Central America, with a rich history coloured with conflict and revolution.

Which is why it's fitting our fresh-faced Kiwi survivors should face their own battle right here.

This is my game. This is my passion. I know how to mess with people, but I also know how to get them to trust me.

And I'm funny. I'm charming. I've got it all.

Staged in the lush tropical jungle, filled with diverse and dangerous wildlife.

Yes, there are jaguars, snakes, scorpions and big ugly spiders. They are out there, but they've always been out there.

It's not like every day a Kiwi wakes up and looks outside and sees a jaguar or a tarantula.

And I'll take on any gang member, but I won't take on a spider.



Just how will New Zealanders cope competing in the world's toughest game?

8,000 people applied. Just 16 will make it to the beach. But in 40 days' time, there will be only one survivor.

I am so excited. Just standing on this beach is unreal. I have to keep pinching myself and reminding myself where I am.

It's just like an absolute dream to me.

Welcome to Nukarakua and New Zealand's first ever Survivor.

In this first season, 16 of you will be competing against one another to see who can outwit, outlast and outplay the rest and take away $100,000.

I dream of being in a tribal council. I dream of being on the sand. I dream of being in the water. Like, this is incredible.

Any of you more than happy to be labelled the villain, if it means winning this game.

I think that generally I'm going to be labelled the villain just for the way that I look, so I might as well accept that.

And if it means winning the game, why wouldn't you do whatever it takes?

Any of you guys think you've got game when it comes to the physical challenges? Nathan?

Maybe a few years ago, but I'm an old man now.

Tony, how are you going to do that?

Well, there's a lot of stuff that creeps around out there in the bush, so I'm sure I can come up with something that's edible.

The things they teach you as a soldier is attention to detail. I'm also a former unit tracker.

I can track a human through the bush. I can stay on this beach for a month. All I need is water.

I mean, in this environment, yes, it's hot. It's horrible. Hey, guess what? This is Survivor.

I've got my brother from another mother over here, which I'm really happy about.

I spoke to Louisa, and she said, you know, brother from another mother.

That saying worried me because it felt like a strategic back-line alliance.

Your mogaton tribe, named after Ngaragua's highest mountain.

It'll be interesting to see if you can live up to your mighty name,

which means purple buffs for you other guys.

I don't know why I had this feeling, but I didn't want to be in that first team.

I was actually stoked. When I looked around, saw the members, I was super happy.

I was pretty concerned when they delegated up into tribes,

and even that ride-in on the truck, you tend to make a bit of a quick connection.

Most of the people that I had formed some kind of connection with were on the other side,

so I was pretty gutted.

Yeah, I'm really happy. Looks like we've got a pretty competitive team.

So when I look around at the other tribes, as Matt's called them out,

I see that Mike and Lee and Jack and Nathan,

you know, the people who I had made a quick and easy bond with,

are on the other side, and I feel like I don't know these people.

Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy being part of the team, guys,

because by the end of the day, two of you will no longer be in these tribes.

That's right. One person from Mogaton, one from Hermosa,

will be voted out at the very first tribal council tonight.

I'm going to give you two minutes to clean everything off this boat you can.

Whatever you have on your tri-mat at the finish is yours to keep.

The big prize, the large sack of rice and flint,

is locked in the chest in the middle of the boat.

But before you get to that, you're going to have to find a key

buried under one of these coloured rocks.

I have made a fire before without flint.

It takes a lot of time and a lot of perseverance.

We went back to the mats to see that we had hardly anything there.

And I thought maybe they just got it on the wrong mat.

I feel a little bit bad for the other side because they had nothing.

I could not believe when I looked down how much gear there was on that mat.

Well, it's a strategy and this is a game and I did what I could.

I read between the lines.

I'm not a bitter person, but no, actually I'm a very bitter person.

Well, I have morals, and I have a moral compass as well,

and so, you know, I feel bad for them as well.

It is a game at the end of the day,

and that's part of the strategy.

Walking together, we were really stoked for winning,

and we were just carrying all our goods,

and we were looking out in the ocean,

and you see these pelicans, and you realize,

wow, we're not in South Auckland anymore.

I've got a bit of experience working in bush like this,

how to set up a camp, toilet, and all the rest of it,

but we're a team, and I think if we play together,

everybody's got input.

A bit of a say goes high and high.

He's got a lot of experience, man, a lot of knowledge,

and he's not shy to share it.

Just remember when you're working around in this environment,

although it may look open, every time you go to touch something,

give it a bit of a kick or find yourself a stick

and give it a bit of a shuffle because there's always going to be

something around it, more so when it gets dark.

I don't mind being a leader at all.

I do have a considerable amount of experience,

and I will use that in every way I can to benefit this tribe.

They see me as valuable.

That's part of my plan anyway, make yourself valuable.

Don't be just an extra body on the ground.

If we can all just have a look around the general area

and just bring it all in here, and then we'll see what we've got

and figure out what we're going to build, eh?

The first thing that I noticed about the tribe members

is that a lot of people are standoffish,

and I'm wondering if it's because of Tony being so direct.

As soon as we walk in, he knew what he thought we needed to do,

who was in charge, and so we kind of let it happen.

Yeah, if you look at some of that stuff, it's a bit rotten.

Tony, were you thinking just to build an actual structure

in this little area here?

I don't mind Tony taking a leadership role in this tribe.

It kind of takes the focus off me a little bit, I guess.

so you probably want to hole about, say, two feet deep.

My biggest concern going into tribal would be that I get blindsided.

I don't know these people yet, and there's always gonna be doubt,

My immediate reaction with voting would be Tom.

I think he could be quite dangerous,

so I'm a little bit worried what he could do.

He was part of an alliance, like, yeah,

one that was naturally created before the tribes were announced.

Worst person on my hit list is Tom.

I mean, I have to say it.

He's a threat, because I know he has some strong people

that he's quite close with from the other tribes.

You have to look out for people who might potentially send you home,

and he's one of those people.

But I just really think Tom, just because he's—

To me, he seems unpredictable.

Like, you don't know what side he will take.

I don't know where his loyalty would lie.

Like, he's a real decent guy, but in terms of strategy...

I will be voting for Tom tonight,

because I don't find him 100% trustworthy.

My greatest strength to this tribe would be my strength,

so I was picking up boulders and—

not boulders, but really big rocks and bringing them over.

I'm like, this is Hannah's pile.

I think Hannah is strong as hell, mentally and physically.

She's really tough.

I just know that there's a lot of very physical group challenges coming up,

and no team wants to be slowed down.

So, basically, um, me, Izzy and Hannah have, um, discussed voting Tom out.

Just because, like, he's an easy threat.

That's a surprise to me, cos she's part of my original alliance.

I'm not very happy with this new development.

So, um, what do you think Tom's plan is about?

Cos he didn't like how she just gave way up.

I think Tom's feeling the pressure,

and maybe in desperation is trying to point the finger at somebody else.

He's thinking, you know, he's already thinking past that, you know?

I think that we should stick to the plan, because Tom's an absolute threat.

My preparation for Survivor didn't start the day that I found out I was gonna be on Survivor.

It started the day that I found out Survivor was coming to New Zealand.

So I got to the point where I could run, I could swim, I was juggling.

I was standing on one foot.

I have held my arm up in the air for as long as I possibly can.

And I started meditating and thinking about how I was gonna act nice

and how I was gonna convince people that I was a pleasant person.

Have either of you thought at all that maybe it wasn't the best idea

for the three of us to go off and leave five behind?

Risky? No. I think if we're worried about that, then it's us three and try and get two more in.

That's gonna— Oh, I think Barb surely would wanna come with the girls, but who knows?

But do we wanna hold girl alive? No, cos the boys will never flip.

They'll just try and grab one of us.

So what do you reckon?

I do want to rush into an alliance straightaway.

As soon as I got to camp, I was looking round at my tribe thinking,

all right, come on, who can I trust?

Dee has spoken to Shannon and I, but I'm a little bit wary of her at this point,

so I'm not sure how I am feeling about Dee.

Well, we can try. I don't know how well that's gonna work.

For me, I'm just not too sure about Dee. I trust Georgia.

I've spoken to people for nearly 20 years who've been not telling me the truth.

One of the skill sets that I'll have that the others won't have

that if it broke down to four, the four from this tribe were going through.

because they have been going off with other people and doing things, and I'm just wondering.

I'd feel rough. You know, we're a long way from home.

It's a big trip to make, and then to go back so early, so it'd be rough.

Louisa, do you think there's any game-playing going on already,

day one of Survivor New Zealand?

Oh, people are talking and going off, discussing who they think

or what weaknesses people have.

We hardly know each other.

You don't even get to spend a night on the island,

and you've gotta send one of your team members home.

And it's not a nice feeling.

Hannah, day one, how difficult is it to vote someone out of this game

when you've just met each other?

It's hard. Hard.

People often look at me and just think, oh, here's a pretty girl in a dress

who does her hair and make-up. She can't pull her weight.

But I was out there lifting massive rocks,

you know, pulling all my power-lifting skills into play.

What are you looking for in a good tribe member?

Someone who's got my back.

Do you trust everyone?

Yes, to an extent.

But at the end of the day, it comes down to it's in a game.

Things can happen, people can turn.

I mean, you can't really have everyone's back.

I don't know who's got my back.

He's had a wealth of experience building and he really knows his stuff.

I think we all listen and respect his opinion.

Yeah, I think I am.

But they've got a great bunch of people here, you know.

I think some of them have been biting their lip a bit.

But they can see what I'm trying to get at, which is good.

Do you think some of this tribe are biting their lip and dealing with you?

Yeah, I think maybe one or two.

I mean, I expected that.

I didn't want to come on too strong because we are a team.

I've got a few.

I've got a very dark sense of humour and some people don't appreciate it.

It could be my downfall, I guess.

But this is Survivor. Anything can happen.

Oh, you know, sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do in order to survive.

the priority was to get a fire going, lift morale a bit,

After our first night in the jungle, I have not slept at all.

I'm a little bit concerned that we have a full day ahead of us,

and I have no sleep under my belt.

Our shelter is a little bit small,

so I'm hoping we can expand on that today.

I think if you just lay them so the spine goes on top of the poles,

that should make the numbers, you know.

I don't think we've got room for seven that way.

One's gonna have to lie horizontal.

What I'm expecting today is that we'll modify our shelter,

and then we're gonna look to try and put a roof on there.

We've gotta establish a toilet site,

and we're gonna just keep bringing that fire,

which is pretty important.

It's the best thing we've caught.

but I didn't say they were out of this game.

to duel your way back into this competition.

to live with whoever's waiting for them

before the two duel in this arena.

No one saw it coming at all,

which definitely doesn't say much for the brain capacity

of the people around this tribe.

Lose the duel, and you are gone for good.

Win, and you live to fight another duel.

Survive an isolated life on the island,

survive your duels,

and eventually one of you will get an opportunity

to re-enter this game,

and another shot at the $100,000.

Redemption Island, for me, it's incredible.

It gives you another shot, you know,

the chance to be able to actually earn your right

I feel pretty good, but it was awesome too to hear the team supporting you.

One thing everyone didn't know is that Survivor's my life.

I've watched every episode of every season at least three times.

I listen to podcasts for about 40 hours a week.

I've listened to about 600 hours of audio books.

I follow every blogger.

I'm a Survivor superfan.

My life has been a Survivor fan.

It's just not been a Survivor.

At no point during my time here was that disproven.
