[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

not that i don't believe in letting the

corpse cool but uh once you've 86 your

stuff i got dibs on your chair

you're annoying right to the bitter end

on rothman that's a gift

look sarge whatever your reasons are for

this

i think you're making a big mistake free

advice

my lucky day

this might come as a shock but there's a

lot of people around here that look up

to you

not at my request maybe not

but that's the way it is now you quit

like this out of the blue

and and and what

let's just say there's gonna be a lot of

disappointed cops

thanks i'll sleep a lot better now

is there something else yeah there is

you want someone to talk to i'm here

thanks

yesterday

i had to tell a woman that her husband

had been murdered

20 years on the force you've probably

done that a

dozen times or more haven't you i went

to her

told i was sorry

sorry that i couldn't bring her husband

back

and then i went and declined so i should

put my resignation on his desk

i can't go on being everybody's big

brother anymore

how do you feel about that adam

relieved

really

well i'm sorry adam

but you look anything but relieved

[Music]

adam

[Music]

you're it can you contact me

i'm not playing curtis curtis stop

[Music]

curtis

b b g whiz

you okay i'm fine

well okay at least now i see why the

beer profits have been going down the

drain

uh look man you've been like a zombie

all night why don't why don't we go have

a talk

can i uh have a cow

well for men now living the life of

leisure you're pretty tense

i gotta take care of my customers oh no

no no no i will go take care of the

customers we want to keep them

you just take care of yourself

i ran across something really

interesting this morning yeah what

one of dad's journals he left for me in

one part he

he wrote that he threw a big party for

you right here at the bar to celebrate

your

10th anniversary on the force dennis

gave a party for me so

he he said that the party was a big

disaster

and he described your mood as and i'm

just paraphrasing

foul ornery and just plain nasty

yeah well we all have a bad day in your

case that would be every year on your

cop anniversary now either

malloys can't throw a party to save

their lives

or you have something tearing you up

inside

are you gonna talk to me there's nothing

to talk about

it's a day like any other day oh right

and that's why we come in here and find

you staring off into space lord knows

where a million miles away

you know what the key word here is away

which is exactly where i'm going tonight

adam what where what uh uh

b wait i'm going with you no i have come

on

i want to go let me go with you what do

you want to do get your shots in at me

too

i'll be so bearing like nobody is taking

shots b

we're worried about you

come on what look we'll get a cabin huh

kick back we'll do a bit of fishing

we'll relax

no look i just i want to go up and clear

my head by myself

i'm going to spray mill tonight it's

frayville

springville isn't our pe it's in the

middle of nowhere

nowhere is exactly where i want to be

okay all right look i got a couple days

off you want to go to an armpit we'll go

to this

i said no

look i just want to chill out granny

alone

i'll be okay i promise

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

howdy

you mind filling her up while i uh going

to get some groceries

don't work here self-service oh

thanks

evening yeah i guess so evening who do i

talk to about running the cabin out by

the way

not for rent i saw a sign in the window

that says it is for rent

rents day by day only you um you want to

be staying a while in our neck of the

woods mister

a couple days more or less what's your

business

personal i want to be alone well you

picked the right place

why don't you go and talk to old george

he's got cam keys ain't nobody stayed up

there in years

good and i guess it'll be real hard

finding me

have a nice visit

listen mr them boys they don't mean

nothing we just don't get many strangers

up around here

you see um people like the way things

are peaceful

calm i don't want no trouble i'm not

looking for any sheriff

good and we're gonna get along just fine

[Music]

[Music]

so

[Music]

so

[Music]

so

[Music]

so

[Music]

so

[Music]

[Music]

wow

[Music]

hi

hi i'm adam who are you

[Music]

it's okay

wait wait where are you

curtis

you boys seen anything yet not what i

owed a sheriff

i got to tell you something mr pedro

this area is more spotless than the

queen of the founders day parade

and i'm telling you something sheriff

that little boy's around here somewhere

so let's keep looking we're not

then look harder this kid could around

in a hundred different directions

that is if there was a kid meaning

you described a little black boy around

eight am i correct yeah that's right

well mr bedro to my recollection there

is no kid in this county

that comes anywhere near that

description look if you're calling me a

liar sheriff i take that as an insult

i'm saying you're mistaken mistaken

we'll see hey charlie what the hell

is all this i used to be a police

officer i made some phone calls

now who's insulting who mister sarge

you uh okay yeah i'm gonna be a hell of

a lot better when i find a little boy

even if i have to do it by myself

you bring him in hollis okay sheriff

we're coming up

you got a name yeah i got a name

lieutenant charles pine metropd

you're in charge of the search sheriff

andy

yeah it was when there was something to

search for oh well then you don't mind

my team

i think look no no you city boys you can

search all you want

but if you ask me you're wasting your

time

i'm calling my dogs off this best

lieutenant oh

by the way pine if i was you i'd keep an

eye on my buddy bedro

seems to me he's a tad excitable what

are you saying

i'm saying we've been searching for

hours for this kid

and i'm not even sure he exists

you see anything sage

you've had a tough couple of days and

and sometimes emotional stress like this

can take its toll

there's no shame in that go ahead say it

you think i'm some kind of head case

chasing an imaginary kid no

no i just think you're a guy that needs

to give himself a break

and put his brain in neutral so that you

got nothing to prove

to anybody the little boy is real

i'm gonna find it eric

adam we're here

come on out

we could have found it ourselves if we

had the money in manpower

sheriff the body it's not the boys what

an armored car

probably skidded off the access road

over there and lots of accidents off

this road

[Music]

hey hey that's my evidence this is local

jurisdiction

this was no accident sheriff the driver

took a bullet through the skull

[Music]

you sure have a funny way of quitting

the force

there was an armored car hijacked five

years ago but it was never found

until today with surprise no money you

don't think this is

linked to the kid i'm not sure

but i'm gonna find out i think he was

trying to lead me there

sergeant do yourself a favor forget

the kid i told you i i run every

possible missing person lead in the

tri-county area and there's none

fitting the boy's description then

you're gonna have to widen the area

because i'm gonna keep looking

okay i'll stay on it we'll find the

point all right

meantime why don't you go home get

yourself some shut eye

later i got a lot more work to do here

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

hang on i can't i'm sleeping

bobby i was working late and i

heard your voice from clear down the

hall are you all right

no no i'm not

charlie told me what happened in

springfield

when i saw the boy in the woods

when he ran away from me i knew

what was going to happen i knew he was

going to go off the cliff

charlie said they didn't find any boy

i know it was going to happen but i

couldn't prevent it

once again i was helpless to prevent

once again yeah once again

you mean you saw visions of the same

event

are you saying the boy in your vision is

the same boy you saw today in the woods

oh come on adam dig a little now

you can't be the same boy

can't be why why not

because the boy curtis is dead

[Music]

dro now uh i'm not much

of a detective but i'd say from the

looks of it that you plan on staying a

while

long as it takes long as it takes to get

to the bottom of that armored car

business

and to find out what happened to the

little boy

i hope no one has a problem with that

whoa b it's me

whoa b it's you yeah surprise

tell me about it

i got the kerosene what's going on

that's what i'd like to know

what are you two doing here well

um mia and i we kind of got sick and

tired of the rat race so we

we thought we'd come and hang out with

our friend you thought

yeah i mean we we figured you could use

some company

you figured wrong

backpack huh planning on doing some

sleeping under the stars

something like that well that's kicking

i could use a little fresher myself yeah

we'll go with you

i don't think anybody invited you b

we talked to pine

we're here because we're worried about

you everybody is worried about you

we just want to help

i don't remember asking for anything

yeah well you never do

but whenever i need help why you help me

yeah me too

we just want to help

listen guys i appreciate your concern

but this is something i have to do alone

you guys can stay here for the night

okay

but in the morning you leave both of you

[Music]

so

[Music]

so

[Music]

what are you doing here boudreaux it's

taking a little nature

right no

we keep meeting like this people start

jabbering about us

hell i see more of you and i do the old

lady

seen any trace of that little boy you've

been looking for

nothing

but literally for hunting season isn't

it no

no whale just opened up

you guys must be good shots what makes

you say that

grill's hard enough to hit with a

shotgun both carrying rifles

but we want to give those little

critters a chance more sporting and all

well good luck to you

you too oh boudreau

you be careful weird things happen out

in these woods

yeah i'll remember to keep my eyes open

every second

[Music]

[Music]

oh

[Music]

[Music]

i knew you were real i knew it

it's okay son i'm not gonna hurt you

what are you doing out here huh

what's your name

my name's adam you remember me

what do you have in your hands

can i see it huh

let me see it

wait

[Music]

fixed

let's get out of here

it was a good thing we just had me walk

in the woods huh yeah damn good thing

you guys didn't listen to me when i said

i wanted to be alone

what the hell is going on here

who the hell are those guys something

tells me there were a couple of quail

hunters

well fine we'll go do a little hunting

of our own

bee are you up for this i'm going to

find the kid no we'll

find him whoa whoa chill look i want to

get to the bottom of this too but it's

pitch black outside we've been wasting

our time

i have to get to the cliff i have to

find him we'll go with the crack of dawn

no i'm going now

are you crazy that's what i have to find

out

oh are you okay

look it's just a flush wound all right i

don't get it

lloyd says every year on your cop

anniversary you go loco

no no no no no miguel when boudreaux

wants to talk

well then boudreaux will talk

you guys think that i just push you away

sometimes when you're a cop you have to

push people away

not a cop no more

you're right

you're right

when i was nine years old i ran away

from an orphanage with

i saw that little boy curtis was it that

bad a place

eventually we wound up in these woods

being from the city we'd never been to

the woods before

we were cold and hungry so we broke into

this very same place

when the owners were away

boudreau the elbow

anyway one day we were out in the woods

we were lost

curtis wanted to play tag

i told him no we kept running anyway

just like we were playing

saying you're it you're rich you can't

catch me you can't catch me

adam please help me please hang on

i can't i'm sleeping

it was my idea to run away from the

orphanage

i let him down i let him die

but you can't blame yourself

yes i can you guys want to know why i uh

act like this every year on my cop

anniversary

i joined the force exactly 15 years from

the day that curtis died

every year his memory

coming back

this year is worse than ever

let it go man i can't

yeah it's not your fault you can't blame

yourself

i blew it you were just a kid

yeah so is curtis i just wasn't just a

kid

curtis was my brother

[Music]

what are we looking for the kid i saw

was holding something i would certainly

want me to see it know b

uh pine told us about this little boy

that you think you keep seeing

you know sometimes our imagination runs

wild you know

yeah sure

hey look at this 20 bill

i didn't imagine this

kid's real

he's real

this weapon familiar to you

but it belongs to otis yeah where is he

well him and ricky went fishing ron they

actually went hunting sheriff and

boudreau here was their prey

but what the hell is going on here why

were they shooting at you

maybe they weren't shooting at me maybe

they were gunning for the kid

ah come on don't start again with this

little boy lost in the wood stuff he's

real

okay if this kid is so real why would

the boys want to kill him

maybe he saw something like what

like this the kid dropped this in the

woods yesterday when otis and ricky

opened fire the serial number on that

bill matches one from the missing

armored car

i don't get this sheriff i think otis

and ricky

heisted the armored car and murdered the

driver five years ago

but draw you said this kid was what

maybe uh eight years old

and now you're trying to tell me he saw

a murder go down when he was three

no i'm saying that otis and ricky could

have dumped the car into the ravine

still full of cash and waited for the

heat to die down maybe for five years

they think they pulled off the perfect

crime except when they go down to pull

out the cash

they're spotted by little boy in the

woods yeah now you're getting the idea

and if i hadn't spotted the little boy

they'd have hunted him down and killed

him too

you know now we gotta we gotta

definitely get this little boy before

they get to him

there you are what are you doing here

well you didn't call me back i got

concerned

call you back didn't you i left word

with deputy pride about the kid

what'd you tell him well i did like you

asked i widened the area and i got a

missing person's and a boy matching the

description you gave

he's a runaway from the city his

grandfather eric get to the point

his grandfather lived in a trailer less

than a mile from the spot that we found

the armored car

let's move lieutenant thought you might

want that

he's been in there he's around here

somewhere sniff him out

uh you must be long gone by now

let's just forget all about it we're not

forgetting about nobody until i say so

well look at what we got here kill him

now come on horse he's just a little kid

he ain't done nothing he's seen us he's

a witness

and that's something we can't have

i guess i'll have to finish this myself

[Music]

i'll get the boy your problem

police dropped the weapon ricky what the

hell you doing

down there

no hard feelings kid

help me please help me

don't

you don't want to add another murder

drop it

i've got you i've got you come on come

don't on okay put your arms up around me

come on get that arm off

hold on come on

[Music]

you should have seen the kid's mother's

face when she opened the door

i don't think he's gonna be running away

from home again

here how about you carry this for

another 20 years

you know charlie the day that curtis

fell

i decided right then that i wanted to

help people

i knew i couldn't help curtis

but i wanted to help others

that's when i also remember thinking i

want to be a cop

i still do

[Applause]

you see now i understand why i had deja

vu every year on my cop's anniversary

and and i also have a feeling that uh

curtis was reminding me that i am my

brother's keeper

amen yeah make a wish

[Music]

[Laughter]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

so

[Music]

you
