Street Justice (1991–1993): Season 2, Episode 20 - The Wall - full transcript

you know

why don't we quit we could finish

another day

yeah this is supposed to be a holiday we

are closed today look

what other day could we do this and have

a drive for when our customers get back

huh

you know you're not getting the idea

okay this is a day off

and day off means do no work it means

have fun thanks this is

fun you know you could try to get more

paint on the wall instead of on yourself

hmm

see it's right there did you see that oh

yeah can you see that don't even think

about it

okay watch this

[Music]

oh this this is this

you guys are having fun here we go

pick up a brush oh you look terrible man

what's up remember danielis

yeah he's the kid i busted for shooting

up on heroin

is paroled to willis's youth action

program isn't he

yeah but he didn't show up for it

figgis hey i grew up with donny he's an

okay kid

miguel if he's back on that stuff he is

not an okay kid

he just needs another chance his old man

was killed last month his mother's a

junkie herself

what are you getting at

i made a promise to myself that i'd help

donnie the way that you helped

me but i can't find him

and you want me to find him if i go

anywhere near a shooting gallery i'm in

violation of my own parole

yeah and if i find him in a shooting

gallery then i have to bust him

look i can clean him up put another

stint in juvie

and he's gone please patrol for me make

an exception

i'm trying to do some good

um

[Music]

shut up

[Music]

hello donny

what are you doing here miguel asked me

to find you

i'm here to help what kind of a sucker

do you think i

am you want to bust me i'm not here to

sucker you kid

[ __ ] miguel and mr willis

they're trying to help you i just want

to help you too

get away from me man this needle is hot

with aids if i stick you you die

come on donny don't do anything stupid

i'm here to help you i'm serious man i

got aids don't mess with me

come on you get away from me

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

no big deal mcgill no big deal adam

we're talking about aids

boy don't overreact donnie probably said

he had the disease just to get me to

keep my distance

let me take you to a clinic i'll take

him it's my fault anyway

nothing that went down is your fault

miguel okay if i hadn't asked you to go

in there unofficially you would have

backup it might not have went down the

way it did

come on let's just put this behind us as

soon as you get tested

well i'm a grown man

i don't need to be told what to do

here

excuse me yes i've been waiting for over

an hour can you tell me how much longer

it's going to be

i'm afraid i don't know sir this is a

very busy place

i i understand but i'm a very busy

person i'm a police officer perhaps you

can make an exception you know it's been

an

hour i'm sorry but there are people

ahead of you and behind you

you finished complaining

i'm finished

good

hi helen kyle i've got three o'clock

with tom all telling your hair nancy

a little advice be nice around here

makes the whole experience a lot more

pleasant i'm nancy

adam hi i apologize for taking your time

it's just that uh

i was tired waiting oh don't worry i've

been in your shoes before

adam

[Music]

good luck

i'm afraid i have some frustrating news

for you now we can test you today but

it'll only be a baseline test what's

that supposed to mean

well what that means is that it won't

show positive unless you had the virus

so about six weeks ago

it certainly won't show positive if you

were infected this morning

great then i'll come back in six weeks

there are some things you should know

how are you gonna handle your sex life

from now on look i always practice safe

sex if that's what you're getting at

good answer now if you have the hiv

virus

do you understand what that means yeah

it means i have aids

well not exactly see hiv is the virus

that causes aids it damages your immune

system which leaves your body open to

infection

so even if i have the virus i won't

necessarily get sick right away

that's right it's like magic johnson

some people take years to get sick

others get sick faster truth doctor

what are my odds i don't believe in

putting odds on people's lives

come back in six weeks we'll test you

and if the results are negative

that means i'm in the clear

unfortunately no

we'll have you back in three months for

another test then another three

months if you're still negative then

well you probably don't have it

so i won't know for six months not for

sure

what the hell am i supposed to do till

then

enjoy life

yeah how'd it go adam

bye hey somebody asked you a question

back there the customary thing to do is

respond

look i just got some bad news

i apologize again okay oh

apology accepted

hey listen can i make a suggestion only

if i don't have to take it

no no obligation but i run a support

group here for hiv-positive people if i

were you you know i'd consider going

i appreciate your kindness but um i've

been around enough death i don't want to

sit in a room and cry with a bunch of

people oh

well take it from me beats crying alone

hope i see you there

thanks for coming in so soon ms ellis

have you heard from donny

no call the d.a and get a warrant to

search ms ells's home

you're not gonna find anything there

well perhaps not

but our dog will his name's hoover

like the vacuum cleaner if there's any

drugs around he sniffs him out

and you go to jail gee i hope i've made

that clear

i'll make that call

he's staying at some old hotel downtown

i think it's called hotel splendor

where have you guys been you were

supposed to be here a couple hours ago

yeah i'm sorry it just took longer any

luck finding donny

no we looked all day but that ends

now don't use too much sugar

how you doing the job

hey

you okay i didn't take the test yet

what adam you told me you said i have to

wait six weeks because it wouldn't show

up yet

so you get to live with a giant question

mark for six weeks is that it

maybe for up to six months before i know

anything for sure

oh man my life's on hold

i'm not enough not for long um miguel

and i will find donny

no you won't why not

we're gonna get him tested first of all

you can't force anybody to get tested

all right uh fine we'll uh we'll

convince him to volunteer

yeah okay so you find him maybe he'll

stick you with a needle

you might die you ever think about what

it feels like to be faced with that

no no not not exactly stay away from

donny

adam they just want to help i don't need

their help

i don't need anyone all right would you

just hold on a second okay adam

we're we're your friends we're your

family

you know when you need our help and our

support and like it or not

we're going to give it to you

would you look at yourself you need to

talk this out or you're gonna make

yourself sick whether you have that

virus or not

adam talk to me

okay

you couldn't possibly understand

well then talk to somebody who can

hey i wasn't expecting to see you here

i'm surprised

so am i why don't you just take a seat

it's just about to start

okay so welcome to the hiv positive

support group

and thank you all for coming i'm nancy

and i've had the virus for

several years now uh are there any

newcomers here today

that's you what

well would you please tell us your first

name and why you're here

maybe somebody else would like to talk

first we'll get to them

now just you know go ahead and speak up

nobody's gonna judge you

okay i'm adam and uh

i'm here because i was uh i was stuck

with a hypodermic needle that might be

infected i uh i don't know if i have the

virus or not

oh how does that make you feel i don't

know

angry

yeah i guess so good that's

natural do you know why you feel angry

because i might die why else i don't

know

won't you tell us why else

because i might die and

because i feel helpless like i can't

fight back

you fight her by nature

yeah you could say that i was in the

vietnam war and now i'm a cop

so the virus is the enemy

yeah go on

oh look maybe somebody else would like

to talk

i feel like i'm the only non-drinker at

an a.a meeting

well adam you know just like in aaa

a person's first step would be to admit

that they're powerless over their

addiction

well your first step would be to admit

that you are powerless over this disease

adam are you scared

the scariest i've ever been in my life

[Music]

of the ten syringes you recovered from

the shooting gallery

three of them were infected with the hiv

virus

any idea which one of these syringes was

used by donnie

we looked for fingerprints but found

only smudges

what about donnie any leads on him yet

his mother told us that he's hiding out

at a hotel downtown kelsey and rothman

are on a 24-hour stake out there

but so far well he's a no-show

we gotta find this kid charlie i can't

keep going on

like this wondering whether i'm sick or

not and you take some time away from the

job

and you get your mind off this i need to

work

see what i can stop thinking about this

do you know that woman at your desk

yeah i know barely

keep me informed please

so this is where you work

yeah work being the operative word oh

not visit with women you hardly know

no well don't worry this is business

there's this woman that i know and she

really really needs to talk to

a cop but every time she calls she gets

the run around so

will you go and talk to her what about

she says she was robbed

okay

thanks

so where's this woman you're looking at

her

somehow i knew this was a con no no i

said there was a woman

me who needs to talk to a cop you

about being robbed now what would you

call having most of your adult life

stolen away by some germ

what do you want from me nothing

i just want to get to know you

i'm sorry i'm very busy

monday adam was quick to refuse my offer

but i think he's just being stubborn

what's that for that it's my diary

look nancy my life is very complicated

i already have more friends than i can

handle

okay thought i'd ask sorry to bother you

hey wait a second please change your

heart

[Music]

all right i accept your offer

boy for a cop you sure are a pushover

come on

where are we going just follow me

so tandem or solo neither i'd rather go

to work

two solos please there you go

so saddle up let's take a ride did you

hear me loud and clear

officer workaholic let me guess you feel

guilty for having fun no i just like

working

well if you're a human being like the

rest of us you also like to have fun too

when i'm off the clock well you're off

the clock now so get on the bike

can't we just start this friendship

later yeah well

we're running out of time so get on

[Music]

[Music]

are you married why do you ask

well i wouldn't want your wife to think

we're up to something that we're not

now i'm not married but i'd like to be

someday

me too i guess if i get the virus the

marriage will be a pretty tough prospect

oh

no doubt take it from the world's most

ineligible bachelorette

you know what it feels like to be

stigmatized by a disease

unfortunately i think i'm learning

so what are you gonna do with your life

if you test positive

i don't know i guess go on

you know business as usual oh yeah and

that's what i thought but that's not

what happens

i'll tell you one thing i won't quit my

job that's for sure

boy you sound just like somebody i know

very well

her name's nancy and she ran her own

business and she loved it he was

everything in the world to her and then

and then she got the hiv virus and she

learned that there were just a few

things missing from her life

my husband

children photographs from exotic world

locations

what'd you do i got a part-time job and

i started a list

what kind of list a list of things i

haven't done

things i intend to do with the time i

have i've only got one thing left

and then i start a new lesson what's the

one thing

what are you doing saturday working

would you forget work you have to live a

little finish off my list with me

nancy what's the one thing left on your

list

bungee jumping

you are crazy yeah so how about it

um how about something a little less

dangerous like you know dinner at my

place

are you cooking it yeah

probably safer to bungee jump

very funny

yo anybody seen donnie alice

20 spot for anybody that can point us

his way

last chance yo 20 going once

uh going twice yeah

i've seen him good

where

[Music]

moved to some hotel

which one

it's not grady yeah

and miguel what are they doing here

what the hell are you doing here we're

going to surprise party

go home us

it's handle this

[Music]

what do you know the birthday request

[Music]

[Music]

gonna get in the way

[Music]

hey

[Music]

damn it grady we would have had him if

you two haven't shown up once you back

off

whatever we had him sarge we had donnie

ellis in our

sights and the dynamic duo here shows up

and scares them off

i asked you guys to stay away from

donnie can't just sit on our hands can

we

oh we had to do something b

all right i want your word you stay away

from them from now on

where

get out of here wait a minute sarge

sarge we had him we could have had him

tested and you'd know if you were

infected

i'm aware of that eric so why aren't you

all over these two for screwing up

because they were trying to help me

getting angry at them for that would

just be a waste of energy wouldn't

come on get out of here

are you okay i'm okay considering

so what's the plan i'm moving kelsey and

rothman over to the ls apartment

they'll be watching for donnie around

the clock

charlie uh i'd like to take you up on

your offer

i want to take some time off you kitty

i mean yeah yeah sure take as much as

you need

thanks uh let me know what happens

[Music]

all right one minute

don't look so happy to see me i am happy

to see you i just

didn't expect you phew

i just thought i'd drop by and see if

you're okay do you mind

of course not i'm fine thanks

now this is really lovely

so who's the lucky one um her name's

nancy

i met her at the aids clinic

oh i get it you turn to strangers for

support and leave your friends in the

dark

that's not what happened oh no no

she's uh she's been through this malloy

i think she understands how i feel

well you know i could too if you just

tell me

malloy what what what what

come here

one second

hi

is this a bad time uh no no

nancy this is malloy hi nice to meet you

well i'll be off okay good night bye

bye so am i guilty of disturbing the

peace

yeah but it'll blow over

[Music]

kind of a circle

may i ask you a personal question uh-huh

if i can ask you one

[Music]

how'd you get the virus

[Music]

from this guy i was dating god

nobody deserves to die from making love

it's such a contradiction you know

okay now it's my turn to ask you my

question

how good of a friend is malloy

she's a good friend

he made me a lovely meal and then he

waltzed me around his living room in

more ways than one

it's not what you're thinking thank you

for answering

but i did have a dream about her last

night

and now for the rest of the story

and my other friends

tell me about it

i dreamt that i was standing in

front of this huge wall

then my friends were calling for me to

come over to the other side

what did they say i said that they were

worried about me

wanted me to climb over and be with them

but uh

there wasn't a way over this wall well

what you do

i yelled back to them that i couldn't be

with them right now

but that when i found the way i would be

i really felt alone and when i turned

around

i saw you standing there

oh i'm glad i could be there

okay

you know what i think i should go now

okay hey uh let me give you a ride home

no i'm fine i just um look thanks you

know for the

lovely evening i just gotta go uh nancy

i'll give you a call in the morning i

just want to make sure you

want to make sure you're okay bye

i wonder if donnie will ever show up

looks like sis is brown bagging maybe

donnie got hungry and phoned home for

food

let's go

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

down

terrific let's try the light

well well well donnie allison

we got you now

nancy it's adam

nancy

nancy

hey nancy

i haven't called you all morning why

didn't you answer the phone

no energy

oh man i'm taking you to a hospital

adam

[Music]

[Music]

what's wrong with her she has acute

pneumocystis pneumonia

it's an aids-related infection

you're saying she has aids i'm afraid so

we were riding bikes and dancing just

yesterday unfortunately this form of

pneumonia can hit very quickly

we're doing all we can but her immune

system is just not fighting the

infection

she will pull through this won't you i

can't answer that

you can go on and see her now but don't

stay too long

she needs a rest

i just talked to tom

how you feeling lucky

how is this lucky

adam i've worked with aids patients for

a year now

i've lost count of how many i've seen go

through

long and drawn out agonizing deaths with

blindness

incontinence mental deterioration and a

lot of

pain

see i'm lucky

because i might get to die quickly

you're not dying

yeah i had am i i am dying

you still got years left you just have

to be

more careful now you have to take care

of yourself

[Music]

now don't you worry

i'm ready

tom says you gotta get rest what you

can't get if i keep bugging you

[Music]

you have to say goodbye to me no

i'll be back i'll bring you something to

read

you just get some rest

[Music]

and pinel had the results in the morning

oh look if you guys want to go home come

back tomorrow i understand

no we came here to be with you while you

wait

looks like i'm throwing a party

[Music]

[Music]

it's unlocked

i was thinking of buying a car charlie

should i pay cash or buy it on time

either way you'll be around to drive it

for a long time

you're in the clear adam yes hallelujah

the kid admitted that he was lying he

swears he only uses new needles but he

agreed to be tested and he's clean

[Music]

front of this

huge wall and i heard you calling out to

me from the other side

and i looked for that way over the wall

to be with you but there wasn't one

adam whether you test is positive

or negative keep living

[Music]

you can start by finishing off my list

for me
