Street Justice (1991–1993): Season 2, Episode 12 - Bitter Fruit - full transcript

Doc Nash, the medic who save Adam's life during the war comes to town to tell him that a guy they knew died. Later Doc is arrested for burglary. And Grady catches him shooting up, thinking he's a junkie but he claims he's just medicating himself. He claims he was trying to get proof that a defense contractor manufactured a biological weapon that would also kill Americans as well as the enemy. When he couldn't prove Adam has no choice but to turn him in. But he later learns from Willis that the biological weapon is true and that the drug Doc was taking is what is given to people who are exposed to it meaning that Doc is infected. So Adam tries to help him prove it.

this is wow

oh yeah i'll i'll take it thanks

it's 220 dollars what do you think it is

much money that's what it is where's

adam there you go

uh you adam uh b b package

didn't say sir i just delivered

don't you have anything better to do to

stir up trouble man follows me around

like a stray dog anyway was the only way

i can get the 220 bucks you owe me since

now

there you go pal thank you very much doc

nash hey aren't you that skinny little

round-eyed guy that brought this big

wounded goon into my mass unit yeah i

was happy to see you then doc

but it's damn good to see you now

how you doing ken good doc ted willis

teddy the doc

willis my pleasure yeah pleasure for me

too

oh and uh doc this is malloy hi well

hello malawi take my love

take my heart don't take me to court

so here here i am in the latrine

and somebody shoves this giant raft in

and the damn thing

starts inflating on

we never did find out we'll pull that

game while i'm done

oh yeah i wonder

hey

i hate the spring this on you like this

but

a survivor bottle yeah irving was killed

last month in an automobile accident

his wife sent the bottle of me

when is it now

irving uh irving was his friend of ours

from there

you see adam and i and three other guys

were pinned down under heavy fire

we took shelter in this bombed-out bar

right near the laotian border

and we found this bottle of cognac

behind the bar and we all promised that

uh

the last survivor would drink in honor

of the others that's right adam and i

are the last survivors

adam i can't think of anybody that i

trust more to have that battle in you

okay let's just hope it stays unopened

behind this bar for the next 50 years

yeah you okay

yeah draw him clean just too much of

that great airline food you know what i

mean

wow here's to a trusted friend

a fellow survivor and a brother

to the man who saved my life i feel the

same way about you

don't let the bastards win now something

tells me there's a story there

kind of makes you feel that way doesn't

it that's what doc said to me when i was

about this close to dying in them

and it's what adam said to me when i was

about that close

to dean on drugs but the good news is

that adam cared enough

and he helped me kick chunk the bad news

is now i'm hooked on this damn cream

soda

which if you'll excuse me i am going to

share with the public works department

hey doc

glad to see you again man i love you

adam

[Music]

careful of that big fella you got my

life in your hands you're writing again

man

yeah well i figured i did so well on

bathroom walls i'd branch out

now it's an expose on crime or a comic

book i haven't made up my mind yet

that's for a detective magazine hey it's

a rag but it pays the bills

man you're so good with words you should

write a book yeah

i figured i'd better read one first

you know this um magazine that bounces

me all over the country

get to go to city to city hang out with

a lot of cops

and i scrounge a lot of stories so i

thought that maybe uh yeah maybe your

old buddy detective pedro could show you

around the world of crime

i didn't come here just for that i need

to borrow money too

so who's the cheering section over there

hey

hey don't mind me man i just strictly

pin it gallery over here please

so chevy how does a boys club like yours

manage to rip off so many places for so

long and get away scot-free

it's simple boudreaux donuts

this guy's funny he's a riot is it

all right i'm waiting all right all

right

midnight we call it the donut hour

it's best time for stealing dealing

breaking and taking

why because you got cops on the ford at

midnight shift coming

off and then you got your graveyard

shift just coming on

you got all your manpower park in front

of jellyfields

takes you guys six to ten minutes just

to get the eclairs out of your mouth

and respond to an alarm i'm in and out

of there before you guys ever get there

just sit down don't say a word i'll be

right back

so i've always been real curious

as to how you guys get around these

alarm systems

oh yeah how curious

all right if doc interferes i promise

i'll just wave him on

we need this guy sevi i am counting on

you to make this all clean

okay

easy in easy out bro lines can't catch

you

they never put me above the first floor

i thought i told you not to talk to him

hey i

heard enough i've seen enough uh i'll

get out of here tell you what

i'll see you later at the bar and i'll

buy you a cold one okay see you savvy

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

look this is clearly some two-bit

burglary right

i would think you people that have the

guilty parties nailed by now

i'm working on it mr collins now if you

don't mind i've got an investigation to

run

i'm sorry it starts in two days

alder cam will be introducing department

5 one of the true wonder drugs of the

90s

my entire professional life has centered

on this moment

the last thing i need is some messy

investigation over some drug theft

slopping over into alder kim's day in

the sun wait wait a minute now

are you sure that this break-in is about

drugs maybe it's your competition want

to get a little peek at your miracle

cure

no no like my father said when he turned

alder kim's reigns over to me

the competition steals from you they

look you straight in the eye

i'm telling you sergeant this break-in

was small-time stuff

let's get it nipped in the butt all

right

i want the videotape from that camera

already ordered it sergeant all right so

what do we have

okay five storage rooms broken into real

mixed breeds some of them contain

research materials some contain drugs

what does entry look like a perk made

like batman of a drainpipe jimmy the

door

let me guess no alarms right

except the alarm at the main quarter

entrance was tripped a couple minutes

after midnight

police response was eight minutes later

perp was in and out long before we ever

got here

just like little semi laid it out you

think there's a link to setty

i only wish there was

hey adam look at this pen burning up the

pages baby just like a jet plane

want to see my latest work i think maybe

i just did

you mind telling me where you were

around midnight

boy you can't sneak nothing past the cop

can you

okay i'll pay for the long just a

telephone call i want to know where you

were doc

what are you checking up on me where

were you

damn man you sound worse than the mps

used to kick us out of the officers club

somebody broke into a company not 10

blocks from the precinct at exactly

midnight

really second story job no alarms

in and out in eight minutes exactly like

little chevy laid it out yesterday

so that makes me guilty because i wear a

wristwatch you know why i'm asking you

hey adam come on it's a low blow

i did some petty thessa when i was on

the needle but it's behind me now

all right just tell me where you were

and we can forget the whole thing

damn adam you know me so darn well why

don't you give me a little credit for

being a coward that's the problem doc

i know you and you know coward

it's on your mind

you ever hate yourself for suspecting a

close friend of doing something bad

it's dark isn't it

my gut tells me he's done something

wrong my heart keeps something like hell

he hasn't

gee sounds like you've already declared

him guilty

doc's had some problems in the past i'm

just trying to remember

he's not the medic with the golden hands

now he's just another guy trying to get

by

if that's the case and he's trying to

get by outside the law then i'm afraid

he's

picked the wrong town to do it

hey paisano dinner

doc

pretty listen hawaii huh so you can kill

yourself with that crap

it's a painkiller come on man i'm not a

little kid anymore wait wait ready don't

leave don't leave listen to me hear me

out

i got hit by shrapnel now a piece of it

lodged too close to the nerves of my

thigh

it couldn't operate

every morning noon and night my leg

feels like it's in a meat grinder why

why can't they take the steel out of

your leg

there's a good chance i could wind up in

a wheelchair you wouldn't want to see me

in a wheelchair would you grady

listen don't say anything to adam

you know he is i don't i don't want him

to worry

what about your old habit or your war

injury

come on grady i'm being straight with

you

i really am i hope so doc

seen that look before charlie that's

never good news

the lab blew these up from the video

surveillance at alter camp

i wanted you to see them first

he's your friend isn't he

i thought he was

oh geez so wait wait get this get this

so this woman says

your ego's writing checks faster than

your body could gash yourself

or what hey adam

oh god doc come back here

later my boy

i don't know what to say i'm trying to

blew it

try i'm killing myself you can try a lot

of things but it won't cut it man

i can explain explain explains just a

junkies word for lion

lock him up eric lock him up dinesh

you've got the right remains

i never meant for you to get this

involved

after what we've been through together

you don't think i'm involved in your

life

man i care

but i got to tell you doc you really

blew it this time

does that mean that i should call my

lawyer and ask for help

i just wish you'd ask for help before

things got so damn crazy again

all this stuff about writing was just a

lie wasn't it

damn it man don't you see what this

garbage is doing to you

i'm clean adam why don't you stop lying

duck

i mean you need to fix so bad you'd sell

your own mother for it

not a fix medication sorry

lab report on the drug in his bag it's

called domite it is a prescription

painkiller but it's also the latest

definition of let's party

i've got a prescription yeah right

it's the same thing you told me the last

time you were strung out

it's not what you think adam

it's not you're sick

no then why did you need the drugs

why'd you break into altercam's vaults

to cover up what i was really after

and what's that the truth

altar cam's in the business of death

they made defiance adam

did you ever hear a a66 what the hell's

a66 apple 66

rgi sucked it into their systems into

their lungs

when they sprayed it over the jungles

and nom

a lot of good men died because of it

and i want to prove it and that's why

you broke into altercam

to get the evidence to get to the truth

i wish you trusted me enough to let me

in on your truth doc

but the only truth you're leaving me

with is the fact that you committed a

felony and no matter what you say

there's no lie in your way out of that

illinois b all right

what about uh doc

walked in on him at your place he was uh

he was shooting up

why didn't you tell me i promised him

that i wouldn't say anything

man promising secrecy to a junkie is

like shoving the next needle in for him

hey

hey we're talking about doc all right he

said it was medication cause cause of

some strap when we took a nam who's in

pain

doc was never wounded in nam i didn't

know that but i thought i was doing the

right thing you know what

i'm not sure that i didn't do the right

thing

hello folks hi hey

i uh i heard you might need someone to

talk to

i wonder who told you that i'm gonna go

do my books

good idea

i uh i heard about your friend doc a

situation like that's kinda hard to take

huh

a man saved my life willis

yeah and you've been trying to pay back

that debt ever since haven't you

now look at him comes a time when debts

get paid in full

you know i thought i had by getting him

off drugs

now he's out there robbing for a fix

he's lying he's hiding behind some

stinking excuse

about a bogus disease from something

called a66

yeah wait a minute adam there's nothing

bogus about a66

what are you talking about come on let's

uh let's take a little ride

you and me come on

thousands of vets are affected by a 66

and how come i never heard anything

about it well that's because alter kim

spent millions keeping it quiet

not to mention the government adding a

few roadblocks

if it wasn't for my relationship with dr

harris i wouldn't know either

how long were you even nom sergeant

several tours hard combat

that's intense service you're one of the

lucky ones

yeah too bad these guys were less

fortunate

apple 66 poisoning is a horrible way to

die only a few of its victims are lucky

enough to go quickly even then

it's excruciating these patients are all

in the late stages of disintegration

i just wish the profiteers named dale

collins who

benefit from a66 could experience even

one fraction of these vet's pain

go to a three percent salient solution

decrease dosage to a five to one group

of domain

don't mind yeah it's the only known drug

that controls the intense pain of

apple 66 excuse me gentlemen i'm doing

surgery

thank you yeah you

when i arrested doc the drug you had in

his possession was don't mind

oh god my friend is dying

from apple 66 poisoning and because of

me he's

facing three to five for burglary

teddy i feel like i just gave the death

sentence to the man who saved my life

i don't like this adam it just doesn't

look right for the arresting officer to

bail out a felon

you're just gonna have to trust me on

this one charlie hey doc

hey great thanks

my stuff huh

why didn't you tell me man what blow all

this great fun that we're having

oh come on doc we we're your friends

exactly hey

you tell somebody that you're dying they

never look at you the same again

come on guys we've seen it a thousand

times buddies going to visit their dying

pals

i mean they try and keep it light it

always turns into a vigil

come on i gotta show you guys something

[Music]

[Music]

now

please

[Applause]

oh

this is it guys this is why i broke into

altar chem and this is why those guys

broke into the office

what's on it hunter kim internal report

apple 66 from 1968.

i heard about this videotape a couple of

months ago the report on it was so

negative that dale collins wanted to

have it squashed

he was afraid the defense department was

going to cancel all of walter kemp's

contracts

let me take a look at this yeah

uh gentleman the a66 test results

with an excellent destruction rate of 95

percent

a66 may be the best defoliant we have

ever developed however

dr t is against giving a66 the full go

ahead because of some recent test

results this is it guys um now these

test subjects were not exposed to

a 66 but the ones that have been exposed

to a66

what happened oh yes the tape is missing

maybe ulta couldn't get to the tape

before you did great

undoubtedly all the other copies as well

well there goes everything incriminating

there goes the truth

what are we looking for

now these test subjects were not exposed

to a 66 but

remember check it out we are in the cage

the door dr tyler that's the guy that

refused to recommend the production of

a66

got it sergeant dr russell tyler

6335 commonly thank

actually you owe me 136. not that i'm

counting

i can't believe you released nash we

didn't release him he was bailed out

by who by me you

you're one of the investigators when the

press gets a hold of this

you'll all be working the park district

take my word for it while you're at it

why don't you tell the press the truth

about apple 66

alder kim's products have never heard a

fly and there hasn't been a court in the

land that's proved differently

maybe that's because the vets who are

trying to prove it are dying quicker

than the cases can get to court

you know sergeant if you've done your

homework you'd know how much altercam

cares for the vets

and after parmat5 is rolled out on

saturday the battle against war-related

diseases will be won

by altercam how corporate profit on the

front end and the back

unless you have proof you could be

opening up yourself and this department

to a huge defamation suit

he's right adam unless you have proof

i'd be silent

i don't have proof yet

can i help you gentlemen good morning

mrs tyler yes

i'm detective adam pedro these are my

friends doc nash grady jamison

the police do you like jams and jellies

you'd be helping me out to take some of

these off my hands

thank you you look like you could use

some of my ginger jam

it'll put a healthy spark back into

those eyes thank you

ma'am i'm here to talk to dr tyler

this has something to do with alder cam

doesn't it yes ma'am

i'd like to help you gentlemen but my

husband doesn't take visitors any longer

lives depend on this they're questions

only dr tyler can answer

uh about his days at altercam alt again

russell gave them 36 years they took his

heart and soul and left me with a shell

of a man

please mrs tyler it's very very

important that we see her husband

ugh

russell there's some men here to talk to

you

dr tyler we're here to talk to you about

your work at ultracam on the defoliant

a66

[Music]

delicious

doc what's wrong with him it's another

form of

apple 66 poisoning and chemically

inducinility

he used to be so full of life his

periods of lucidity are rare now

mainly he just rambles

[Music]

dr tyler do you remember

apple 66

remember apple 66

[Music]

it's delicious

delicious

they don't want to know about my jam

dear

i'm sorry it's no use

thank you

damn looks like college is going to get

this way after all

no there's got to be something we can do

some way to nail this bastard

like what the tape's destroyed and so is

the only man that ever knew the truth

wait a minute wait the lab tests were

done back in the 60s right they didn't

use videotape back then

so what so they had to shoot the test

results on film

of course every film has an original

negative maybe it still exists

doc when you were inside did you see

anything at all

you mean like like a film storage area

oh

the records and development department

the section was right there in front of

me

okay doc

yes

ain't gonna do it this time buddy come

on

come on doc shouldn't you be wearing

that thing doc

hey i was born in l.a

the first breath of air i took was lousy

so why shouldn't my last be

no come on doc you got a lot more

breathing to do

you ain't a bad liar for a skitty little

round eye

grady it can't be one of my cigars

no doc

adam

you know what i always admire most about

you man

you always knew what you wanted to be

he always had a purpose come on doc you

saved my life you saved a lot of guys

lives you had a purpose

halter kim that was my cause

and it doesn't look like having to

finish the fight

come on doc you can finish it okay just

hang in there

you can win the fight don't let the

bastards win huh

i think the bastards won

[Music]

dark

[Music]

so that's it huh duck just dies in vain

and altar cam

and collins they just they just walk

away untouched the only way to stop

collins is to get that film negative of

the a66

test and that's exactly what i'll do

how i don't know

they're not going to let me search

voluntarily

and without more evidence i can't even

charge them

nah get a subpoena but if they don't

know the negatives there

and i subpoena them that could alert

them to it and they destroy it

well there's got to be some way to get

it b

there is one way

i go in and i take it yes now you're

talking

wait wait wait wait are you sure you're

ready to cross that line man you talking

about breaking the rules

no this is doc all right well we're

talking

about doc he's right willis when grady

dragged me in the doc's mass unit

i was gone man my heart had stopped my

surgeons told doc

just i'll let him die those were the

rules back then

doc he just kept beating on my chest

until my heart started

when i really needed him doc said to

hell with the rules

he didn't let me down then i i can't let

him down now

are you guys with me oh yeah

oh man

hey how you doing there i wonder if you

could help me out i think i'm a little

lost here

i was looking for a commercial driver i

took a left back there

i don't know what happened but i'm here

now can you show me where i went wrong

here got it

all right what are we looking for

i don't exactly know let's uh try apple

66 or a666 1960

d66 66.

let me just take all of this huh all

right

all right bad idea search man perch

nothing and they destroyed everything

yeah right let's just keep looking huh

it's not here

whoa hey

what did the what did dr tyler say the

other day

i don't know he's just an old man he's

just battling yeah but he's battling the

word delicious look at this

[Music]

delicious your idea is delicious yeah

delicious like an apple man

tyler must have given this a code name

knowing that collins and his people were

gonna look for the original and try to

destroy it

that whole guy wasn't off the deep end

after all i

and we at altercam take great pride in

unveiling paramount five

today and we are especially proud to

have on hand today

several vietnam war veterans

whose courage and fortitude symbolize

the spirit with which altercam operates

day after day

their presence here is doubly

appropriate

because of all the good parameter 5 can

do for all the men and women

who put their lives on the line to

protect

our values ladies and gentlemen of the

press

let's have a look at the future

[Applause]

the altercam corporation defines the

future offering hope

for 37 years alongside the military a

trusted partnership

developing medical formulas for

advancing the health interests of our

fighting men and women

is there a technical problem uh no no no

everything's fine

uh gentleman the a66 test results

stop that tape excellent destruction hey

what are we watching here

the truth a66 may be the best defoliant

we have

ever developed uh however

dr t is against giving mr clinton

wasting your time there's nothing on

that tape let's watch it

to together but the ones that have been

exposed to a66

well it's not a pretty sight

death was not instantaneous cell

mutation was

slow and painful

our feelings are that it will affect

humans in the same way

only at a slower rate it's

very very deadly stuff

[Music]

where the hell did you get this let's

just say it's what the doctor ordered

this will never stand up in court it

will in the court of public opinion

is this all true a66 was a known hazard

and you brought it to market anyway

oh god how do you think this will affect

your government contracts

i said no comment oh come on mr collins

you must be able to say something about

this

mr collins can you elaborate on this

how will this affect your culture

though not admitting guilt alter kim has

made a multi-million dollar

settlement offer to the va however

the government still decided to put all

altercam contracts

under review especially that

of parmet 5. this is cool that's

very cool doc would be happy

and doc said last man drinks

[Music]

glasses

here's to the spirit

man who never gave up and he never

forgot his brothers

and this friend let the bastards win
