[book shuffling]

[melodical music]

[elevator dings]

I was wrong to bring you with us.

Bringing you...

I thought there would be a chance.

Somehow we could find a way
to save Bruce Gordon.

Because we always find a way...
I mean, that's what we do, right?

Instead, I brought you to a murder.

Family isn't born, it's chosen.

You taught me that.

My sixteenth birthday,

I got into a fight at school.

Remember Hop Harrigan?

Yeah.

He and his buddies beat me up,
stole my watch.

That was my birthday gift.

It was an engraved watch.

Parents left it on my dresser for me
that morning.

I owned that watch for a whole
four hours

and it was gone.

I was so scared to tell my mom and dad
that I had lost their present.

But I did.

I told them.

You know what...

They had no idea
what I was talking about.

They never gave me a watch.

They even forgot it was my birthday.

You snuck that gift into my room

because you knew they would forget.

They always did.

I caught up with Harrigan
the next day...

and I got it back...

because it meant the world to me.

Still does.

[chuckles]

You taught me how to drive, Pat.

You taught me how to
stand up for myself.

Taught me how to think for myself.

You're more than a friend...

you're my brother.

And I know, most of the time...
I don't treat you that way.

I gotta say, have a little too much
of my mom and dad in me still.

I'm sorry.

It's okay.

Pat...

When Eclipso was threatening
everyone's families,

Rex's wife, Ted's son...

he threatened my family, too.

He threatened you.

I don't know
what's going to happen at the JSA...

but I do know, that I don't want this
to destroy our family.

To chosen families.

[whooshes]

[Pat] Courtney, we're sorry, okay.
I'm sorry.

[Courtney] Pat, you had so many chances
to tell me the truth but you kept lying.

Would you please, just let me--

-A really terrible lie.
-It's not that simple.

The JSA killed an innocent man.

Tell me which word of that sentence
I'm getting wrong?

It's more complicated than that
is what I'm saying.

Did you think we'd killed Cindy Burman
because she had the diamond?

Like the JSA killed Bruce Gordon.

Look, they regretted it instantly.

You mean, you did.

This is Eclipso, okay?

He wants to divide us.

No. For once, it's not on Eclipso.
It's on you.

[electricity crackling]

Oh, God.

I'll admit...

it's not my best entrance.

[Shade] Would you mind
very much if I took a seat?

[Mike] What's wrong with him?
Is he dying?

I thought The Shade was immortal.

You can't die, right?

Oh, my dear girl.

I'm afraid there's
an exception to every rule.

Why are you here, Mr. Swift?

To humbly offer my assistance

in stopping the monster
that has tortured your friends.

[ominous music]

And me.

So, I'll tell you how to defeat Eclipso.

Eclipso's not in a host anymore.

He's free.

Yes, I was there, but he's only free

as long as the black diamond
remains shattered.

Fuse the diamond back together

and you'll drag that beast
back to his prison.

Wait...

Put the diamond back together
and we stop Eclipso?

As long as you have no direct contact
with that bloody gem.

Come on.
This is typical Shade double talk.

You can't trust this guy, Court.

[Barbara] Hey, Pat.
He just saved me from Icicle.

All right, Eclipso.

No, "Humbly offering my services,"
my ass.

This guy's trying to manipulate us
just the way he did Starman, right?

Stripesy, we've known each other
for a very long time.

If my advice to your former partner

led the JSA crossing some noble line,

I only told the truth then.

As I do now.

Okay, so if Benedict Cumberbatch here
is correct,

how the heck are we supposed
to put diamond back together?

With the power of light, you silly boy.

With the staff.

The staff still isn't strong enough.

What now?

I got an idea.

[quirky music]

You're staring at me.

-We're concerned, Beth.
-I'm fine.

Could you take those off, please?

I need to keep them on.

-[beeping]
-They help me see what's real.

[beeping]

They help you see what's real?

What are you talking about, Beth?
What's not real?

It's hard to explain.

Try, honey.

No.

You guys didn't feel like
talking about the divorce?

Well, I'm not ready to talk about this.

Besides, it's much safer
if you don't know.

So that's what this is about?
The divorce?

It doesn't make me feel great.

It sucks, to be honest.

But that's not what this is.

[electrical crackling]

Oh, my gosh.

Okay, got it.

Maybe I should take you
down to the hospital.

Yeah, I'll come along.

Why don't you guys figure out
what you're doing with your lives.

Divorce. No divorce, whatever it is.

And let me know when you do.

-Beth.
-Where are you going?

You both have told me
to make friends for years

because you're so busy with work.

Because you don't have
time for me anymore.

So I did.

And right now, they need me.

If anything besides the staff
can fuse the diamond back together,

it'll be Jennie's ring. Thanks.

But she didn't leave us
any way to find her.

Oh, I got a lead,
and it'll be a quick trip.

I don't know if Courtney or Mike
will ever trust us again.

Well, I mean, we'll just have
to earn their trust back.

How?

Don't feel bad.

You tried your best.

Listen, Court, the diamond,

it does weird things,
even without Eclipso in it.

It turned into leeches.

We'll make sure Jennie doesn't touch it.

Yeah, where is she anyway?

Pat won't tell me.

Why not?

Because he knows
I'd go find her without him.

Eclipso is taking his revenge
on the JSA out on us.

Yeah, Court,
but what if he comes back here?

And you and Dad
leave us alone with The Shade?

[doorbell ringing]

Not alone.

Hi.

I'm here to protect you.

[cheerful music]

-[turns on radio]
-[radio host] And in other news today,

the Cakes by Aaron Bakery
issued an apology

after it mistakenly delivered
a wedding cake

to a funeral. [chuckles]

The bakery hoped the funeral party
would forgive the error

as well as the bride and groom who,
as part of the mix-up--

[woman sings on radio]
I'm sorry

So sorry

That I was such a...

[clicks off]

Court, I'm sorry.

Why did you lie to me?

I thought you were better off
not knowing what happened.

How could you think murder was okay?

I didn't.

And I don't. There was a vote.

So they voted to do it?

Some of them did. Yeah.

Dr. McNider had lost his daughter.

Eclipso had threatened
everyone's family. They were scared.

They thought that
they were out of options.

They thought the people
that they loved were gonna die.

What did you do?

It's what I didn't do.
I didn't stop them.

I mean,

do you understand how much damage

you've done by keeping the truth
from us?

Yolanda would have known that she wasn't
the first member of the JSA

to take a life and regret it.

She might have quit anyway.
You all could have.

Maybe. But we were flying blind.
We didn't have the full story.

You're right.

And I'm sorry.

I just didn't want the way
you saw the JSA to change.

I didn't want the way
you saw me to change.

Well, it has.

[emotional music]

[police radio chatter]

[melodious music]

[thudding]

[scoffs]

[snickering]

[beeping]

The Shade, here?

Eclipso free?

The JSA... killing someone.

I'm sorry, Beth.

Did Dr. Mid-Nite help do it?

[Dr. McNider] I made a vow
never to take a life.

Dr. McNider?

Hello?

Hello?

[quirky music]

Hey, keep an eye on the bad guy
on the couch.

I'll be back with reinforcements.

Don't do anything stupid.

[snarls]

When are you going to tell me
where we're going?

When we get there.

Okay.

Holding out on me doesn't help.

Don't make things worse
than they already are.

Don't shut me out.

[emotional music]

Check that out.

It had to be an accident.

Yeah, maybe. There was
another fire earlier this week.

A green one. Burned down
an abandoned orphanage.

Why would Jennie do that?

I don't know.

But she's in Civic City.

Pat, it's a big city.

Yeah, there is only one place I'd go.

[dramatic music playing]

[cheerful music]

[digital beeps]

[Dr. McNider] Hello?

Dr. McNider?

Is that you?

[wind blowing]

The connection just got much stronger.

Where are you?

At my friend's house.

The Shade is here.

The Shade?

He said he's here to help.

I know he tried to kill you
the night the JSA died.

Kill me? No, Beth. He saved me.

[Beth] The Shade was a member
of the ISA.

He helped kill the Justice Society.

Shade may have toyed with
playing the role

of supervillain for his amusement,

but I don't think he ever wanted
any part in killing us.

I suspect he may have been
trying to pull me to safety.

But I was lost in his shadows

dragged into the Shadowlands.

How did The Shade get his powers?

In the 1800s, The Shade was
nothing more than a con man and a thief.

He was hired to procure a black diamond,
but instead had a forgery made.

It was for a cabal
called The Men of Tears.

They had heard a story
about a lost island, a black diamond,

and a ritual to summon a powerful god
from a shadow world beyond.

They wanted to trap that god

so that they might use it
to destroy their enemies.

This dark ritual called for a sacrifice.

So instead of paying The Shade what
he was due, the cabal kidnapped him,

and decided he was to be that sacrifice.

But the diamond
he provided them was a fake,

and Eclipso was already
trapped in the real one.

The ritual was botched,
but it opened a doorway

to the dark power of the Shadowlands.

A power the fake couldn't contain.

-[demonic sound]
-The dark energy needed a vessel.

The Shade became the vessel.

[breathing heavily]

I have some questions.

Hello, Emily.

It's Barbara.

-Who's Emily?
-My dear sister, I am so sorry.

I didn't help you when Father fell ill.

Instead, I left you all alone...

to watch him die.

While I lied...

and cheated my way into oblivion.

I had unspeakable power.

And while you were by my side,
my dear sissy...

I tried not to abuse it.

But then...

time took you from me...

and I lost my way.

[Dr. McNider] I'll help you
however I can from here.

We have to bring you back.

I'm not sure that's possible.

If The Shade put you in the Shadowlands,

maybe there's a way
he could help get you home.

Can you open the files on Eclipso?

There might be something there
that could help.

Of course.

[beeping]

Whoa.

That's a lot of reading.

[mechanical noises]

I haven't been here in ten years.

This was a work space
for me and Starman.

Each of the members had one.

This was ours.

Let's go. Meeting room's upstairs.

Pat.

Yeah.

Look.

I think you were right.

Jennie's been staying here.

The Helix Institute for
Youth Rehabilitation?

Somebody named Todd Rice was sent there.

His name's on all of these.

I think that's Jennie's brother.

[mechanical whirring]

[mechanical noises]

[electrical sparking]

-Damn it.
-[engine powers down]

I thought robotics would be a lot more
like Legos. I guess not.

[revving]

[man over radio] Are you seeing
what's going on in the sky right now?

Wherever you are,
whatever you are doing,

stop right now, look out your window,

at the craziness that is happening
in the sky right now.

There is a cloud in this thunderstorm
arcing pink lighting across the sky...

No way.

[melodical music]

What is this place?

I don't know.

You sure? You never know
what you're not telling me.

According to Jennie's notes,

it's called the Helix Institute
for Youth Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation from what?

And what is your
relationship with Mr. Rice?

Oh, well, we're friends of his sister's.

You know, her name's actually
right here on your sign-in sheet.

Jennie-Lynn Hayden.

Yes, well, sh... she is here.

Oh.

But I'm afraid her brother is not.

Huh.

Right this way, please. Follow me.

[piano music playing]

[door opens]

Jennie?

Courtney? Pat?

Hi.

I'll give you some time
to collect your brother's things.

Thank you.

What are you doing here?

We need your help.

We read about the fires.

Are you okay?

So what happened?

Todd's adoption files were sealed,

so I broke into the federal building...

trying to find them.

When I couldn't,
I got frustrated, angry...

sad.

You know what my power does
when that happens.

It either doesn't work...
or it works too well.

I forgot everything you taught me.

I'm sorry.

I don't know what to do.

Okay.

Jennie.

Hey, it's okay, all right?

Just try and be calm.

You're not alone in this.

Now what's happened to your brother?

He was arrested for shoplifting
a few months ago, but ended up here.

Then he vanished last week.

He's out there somewhere.

And I know he needs my help.

I can feel it.

He has this picture, the same one I do.

Maybe he's looking for me too.

Maybe that's why he got into trouble.

I'm sorry about the fires.

I really am. But...

he's my family.

You do anything to protect your family.

You just do.

[engine starts]

[line ringing]

-Hello.
-Mr. Bones, this is Nurse Love.

Did you know that Todd Rice
has a sister?

No, I didn't.

I thought you might
find that interesting.

No, I don't think they'll be back.

I told them Todd wasn't here.

-[Mr. Bones speaks indistinctly]
-Yes.

Yes, of course.

[people chattering]

Did you see anything here yesterday?

What is that?

I think it's a gumdrop.

[people chattering]

[chirpy music]

Thunderbolt.

[Jennie] A monster in a diamond?

How is any of this even possible?

Eclipso doesn't follow the rules
of our world.

What else is out there?

What else did the JSA fight?

Are there ghosts?

There is, in fact. A Gentleman Ghost.

Hey, we need to focus on
the diamond right now.

Will this help Yolanda and Rick?

Imprisoning Eclipso
will at least be a start.

I'm sorry I left.

Hey, you're here now.

Yeah, and you can stop this.

[digital beeping]

Okay. Give it a shot, Jennie.

[dramatic music playing]

[sizzling]

Oh, no.

Ms. Whitmore? Ms. Whitmore.

We have to get them to stop.

What do you mean?

You did it.

The Shade lied.

Restoring the diamond reconnects
our world to the Shadowlands.

Indeed it does.

Allowing me to access my powers again.

And to heal.

Splendid.

Oh, Barbara.

I'm so, so sorry... to deceive you.

Putting the diamond back together,

it won't trap Eclipso,
it will summon him.

-[loud clattering]
-[Stargirl gasps]

Uh... Aah!

Pat!

[grunts]

Ah!

[both grunting]

[yelling]

To the shadows with you.

[Stargirl] Pat!

Courtney!

-No, no, no.
-[screaming]

[panting] Court.

Courtney.

No. No.
