Spring Tide (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 5 - Episode #1.5 - full transcript

Children find a car in the water where they are swimming. Inside the car is a dead man. Stilton's old colleague and ally, Mette Olsäter, takes the case and quickly starts a murder investigation. The dead man, Nils Wendt, has been missing since 1987. Where has he been all these years, and why has he turned up now? Olivia tries to take it easy after the attack. She is certain that Jackie Berglund is behind it. But she is more worried about her cat, Elvis, who she hasn't seen since. When she watches the news about the dead man in the car she immediately recognises Nils Wendt - the man she saw on the beach in Nordkoster. She contacts Stilton right away. Mette Olsäter goes to see Linn Magnusson, who feigns shock at the news that her old business partner, Nils Wendt, was murdered. Linn doesn't tell her that he recently contacted her, and that they met in person.

A brutal murder was committed
in the summer of 1990.

A pregnant young woman
was buried on this beach...

to be drowned by the tide.

One eight-year-old witness
was all we had to go on.

Ove Gardman here. Speak after the beep.
- Could you call or email me...?

- Are you working on the Nordkoster case?
- No, but you can ask Mette Olsäter.

- Mette Olsäter?
- Yes. - I'm Olivia Rönning and...

Are you Arne's daughter?

They killed Vera.

- I want the guys who did it.
- I'll ask around.

- This is no good.
- Christ, what happened?

- Linn Magnusson speaking.
- It's Nils.

You recorded our last conversation
in Kinshasa?

- Here.
- The original?

Somewhere I'm expected to be
by July 1st at the latest.

If I don't get there,
it will be sent to the police.

- Did anyone look like this girl?
- Hard to say. Maybe.

Did she associate
with a Jackie Berglund?

Look into a woman by the name of
Olivia Rönning. A young woman.

Look at me! Great.

Everyone, wave at me!
Sophie, swim a bit closer.

Nice...
Everyone...

Yes, look this way.
Last one. Good!

- Mum!
- Wait a minute.

- But Mum...
- Hang on. I'm sending this to Moa's mum.

- Mum!
- Hang on.

- But Mum...
- Yes.

Can I have my mask?

- Where's Simon?
- I don't know.

Simon!

Simon, come back!
It's far to deep there!

No, it isn't!

There's an undercurrent.
It's dangerous! Come back!

But I can stand!

Mum! There's a car under the water!
And there's someone sitting in it!

SPRING TIDE

Yes. I'm in her flat now.

Yes. It's disappeared.

I don't know what to do.

- Can we talk later, Mum?
- Okay. Yes, bye.

Mum said just before she died: "If
your sex life doesn't work, skin the cat."

Well, I don't know.
Maybe it was some metaphor.

What?
Why don't you get some Viagra?

Lots of men your age do.
It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

It's better than worrying
it'll go limp every time, isn't it? What?

I got myself reading glasses. What?
I know it's not the same thing, but...

I've got to go...
Hi, Bosse!

What have we got here?

Someone you recognize?

Take Lisa off the Farsta murder.
Call in Stig, Lena and Zoran.

- Book Number Six and clear your diary.
- Okay.

- What time is it?
- It's 2 pm.

You were up till 5 this morning.

- You haven't seen him?
- No.

- Have you been outside?
- I was down there 15 minutes ago.

- But he'll be back, Olivia.
- He's never been away all night.

- Hey, you know what?
- Elvis.

You've just woken up.
Have a shower and I'll make breakfast.

What if he escaped
when that idiot broke

in? He could have got
out and been run over.

- I think he just jumped into the yard.
- I was there all night.

Maybe he found a rat
and wanted to be alone.

Stop it.
- Listen...

Why don't we call the police?

He wasn't chipped.

Not about Elvis.
A nutter attacked you in your own home.

You should have reported it yesterday.

Aren't they answering?

No.

The police?
- I was ringing Stilton.

- Why ring him and not the police?
- What would I tell them?

A nutter attacked me because
I snooped around a shop assistant...

who I think was involved in a murder

- Stop making excuses. You're scared.
- What the hell of?

Nils Wendt. He was found dead
in a car in Lake Mälaren.

Here he is as a young man.
The picture was taken in Kinshasa in 1987.

At the time he was part-owner
of Magnusson Wendt Mining.

Wendt disappeared
the same year the picture was taken.

Questions: Where has he been since 1987?

Why did he turn up here and now?
Who killed him and why?

- I'm off to the press conference.
- Mette...

divers found a phone that may
have fallen out of the car.

- Is it working?
- No, but Tech have it.

A woman figured in that investigation.
Wendt had a de facto a partner.

Hansson, I think her name
was Hansson. Check that, Bosse.

Sure.

- I know you'll stoop low, Linn but murder?
- No one can tie it to us.

- But we know.
- We don't know a thing unless we want to.

- Why are you so upset?
- An innocent person was murdered.

- Damn, it's Tom Stilton!
- Well, I guess it was to be expected.

- What?
- Of Stilton.

He lost it in 2008.
Had a breakdown and disappeared.

- Now he's in the gutter, where he belongs.
- We'll question him.

He was beaten up, probably by the guys
who killed Vera Larsson.

Absolutely. Put out an alert.

Rise and shine, Stilton, old boy!

Here's Minken, bloody Nightingale,
with provisions.

Freshly made java,
sandwich, croissant, the lot.

- Hi.
- Shit you gave me a fright!

I've got coffee for you.
Come and sit down.

Look what Minken's got for you.

I have to find the shits who beat me up.
Talk to Acke or whatever his name is.

Sure, sure...

I can talk to Acke, but...
You're asking a lot of favors now, Stilton.

Is there any dough for Minken in this?
I used to get paid.

Do I look like I've got
pockets full of cash?

- Will you talk to him or not?
- Of course I'll talk to him.

Elvis!

Call me immediately if she
contacts you again. Got that?

Yes.

Good. What exactly did she want?

She showed me a photo of a woman
and asked if you knew her at Gold Card.

- Why did she ask that?
- She didn't say.

Who was the woman in the photo?

Do you think he was alive when I started
the car and began driving?

- I think you'd have heard that.
- We had...

What do you think happened?

Why are you lying here?

What is it? What's wrong?
What happened to Elvis?

Has that bitch done something?

Good work. I'll call you later.
I can't talk now. Bye.

You're fucking crazy!

- Nils Wendt's been murdered.
- I saw that.

- Here in Stockholm.
- Yes.

How the hell can that be?
He's been missing...

- Almost 30 years.
- And now, he's been murdered here.

- Isn't that weird?
- Yes. It's unreal.

- You don't seem shocked.
- Why should I be?

He took off with two million.
I don't have any sympathy for him.

No, but he was murdered!

He'd probably got mixed up in more shit.

No, I have to go inside now.

- Wonder where he's been all this time?
- It's a mystery.

Thousands have died in Nepal...
and large aftershocks today...

- But what will happen if she reports you?
- I don't know.

- It was wrong but I'm proud of you.
- Hang on.

...Kinshasa 1987.

Police say Nils Wendt was carrying a fake
passport when he was found murdered.

- That's him.
- Who?

Where he was for the 28 years
since he disappeared is still a mystery.

Acke!

- What happened to you?
- I was beaten up.

- Who by?
- Well, presumably the people who...

beat Vera to death.

- Will you catch them?
- "Catch them"?

But... Jelle is an old cop. It would
be great if you got those bastards.

Yes, I agree.
Let's make a deal.

If I get them, you fucking quit using
and go to rehab.

That's the most I've ever heard you say.

You're changing the subject.
Do we have a deal?

Do we?

Yes, sure.

- Yes.
- Hi, how are you?

- Brilliant.
- Where are you?

Mosebacke Square.
What do you want?

Remember I told you about a man
I saw at Nordkoster?

Yes.

His name's Nils Wendt.
He was murdered here in Stockholm.

Talk to the people
in charge of the investigation.

Hello? Hello?

Had you and Nils Wendt
been in touch recently?

No, I... I haven't been in touch
with him for 28 years.

This is obviously a huge shock to me.

All these years I thought that he...

Yes. That he...?

I've had so many thoughts...

That maybe he'd killed himself.
Maybe something had happened.

Or he'd been killed.
Or maybe he'd just disappeared.

- But what's your theory?
- He obviously ran off...

and changed his name to Dan Nilsson.

- Do you have any idea why?
- No.

Can I ask you a question?

Do you know where he was
all these years?

Why do you want to know?

Don't you?

Linn.

I'm wanted on the phone.
But if there's anything I can do...

Time permitting, I'll be glad to help.

As you said, we had a common past.

- Did you part amicably?
- What do you mean?

The last time you met, was it amicable?

Yes, as far as I recall.

Tom! Tom!

What do you want?

I can't get hold of the woman
in charge of the case.

They won't put me through.

- Who is it?
- Mette Olsäter. You know her, right? Look!

Do you think he's a bloody undercover?

- Is that Wendt?
- Yes.

- You have to show that to Mette.
- I'm telling you, I can't get hold of her!

Then we'll go and see her.

- Now?
- Yes.

What's that?

Up there on the left.

Here.

She lives here?

Yes.

Will you come in with me?

I'll wait here.

Here you are.

Hi!

- Olivia Rönning?
- Sorry for barging in.

I asked the police for your number
but they won't give it out.

So I asked Tom Stilton to bring me here.

- Is Tom here?
- Yes. He's in the car.

Go inside. My husband's there.

Like that. Then fold it again.

Hello! Hello!

Hello! And you are?
- Olivia. Mette said...

Sure. I'm Marten, Mette's husband.

We're about to eat. Are you hungry?
- Well... it smells delicious

Jolene is at a basketball camp.
She loves it.

I'll put your stuff in here.

Abbas?

Abbas...
Yes, he's fine too. Come on.

- It smells good, doesn't it?
- What is it?

No!

Kids, go upstairs. I'll shout
when the ice cream's served.

Tom is here.

- Hi, Tom! Do you want to eat?
- No, thanks, I'm fine.

- You had something to tell me?
- Yes.

I wanted to show you a video
I took at Nordkoster...

where that woman was killed
all those years ago.

It's Nils Wendt
going down to the beach.

- Are you sure it's him?
- He came to my cottage to use my phone...

and said his name was Dan Nilsson.

- I have to have this. Send it to me?
- Sure.

But what was he doing
on Nordkoster?

He had a cottage there years ago.

- Yes, but why there, on that beach?
- I don't know. What were you doing there?

For the assignment about the beach case.

I wanted to go and see
where it happened and... Yes.

- You went there just for that?
- Yes.

- So who is this Wendt?
- Well, Nils Wendt...

Hey, hey, hey!
I told you to play upstairs.

Come on, let's go through.

Listen! Upstairs now!

Nils Wendt...

Ho owned a mining company
with Linn Magnusson: MWM.

He disappeared in Kinshasa in 1987.

A Swedish journalist, Jan Nyström,
disappeared there at the same time.

His car was found in a lake.
He was dead behind the wheel.

Just like Nils Wendt yesterday?

The Congolese police
decided it was an

accident. They claimed
he was very drunk but...

the autopsy report disappeared.

But did Wendt have any link
to the journalist?

Nyström was writing a book
about Wendt's company...

a book which presumably was very critical.

- MWM...
- Was a bloody exploitative company.

It plundered every region down there...

then got into bed with
the foreign minister.

Bastards!

- Marten!
- Right. Let's have some wine.

- No, I'm driving, thanks.
- Tom?

Right... Tom, how did you meet Olivia?

- I found him in a bin room, actually.
- Really? What were you doing there?

- Is Kerouac still alive?
- Yes, he is.

But I think he's got arthritis.

- Why do you think that?
- Well...

He doesn't have
the elegant footwork he once had.

- Who is Kerouac?
- I'll show you.

No! No, Marten...

Yes, yes, yes.
She has to experience this.

Come on.

- Does he still smoke dope?
- No!

Well... This is it.

Are you a police officer too?
- Hell, no! I'm a child psychologist.

Now, let me show you.

Can you see anything moving up there?

No.
- No, exactly. But...

Here's an old classic.

Now...

Look.

There he is... Kerouac.

Is that a spider?
- Yes, a real cave spider.

No ordinary house spider, a cave spider.
He's incredibly old.

He loves music.

It took me a few years
to work out his taste.

Look. Look how he's enjoying it!

Yes, he is.

- Do you have any pets?
- Yes, a cat.

- Children who fight in cages?
- Yes.

And who beat you up?

Probably the ones who killed Vera Larsson.

- The woman in the caravan?
- Yes.

Have you talked to Forss?

- Is Forss in charge of the case?
- Yes.

Always that bloody Forss!

- Tom... It's more than six years ago.
- I know it's a long time ago.

But there are things you can't forget
or perhaps don't want to forget.

I don't care if you forget or not, but if
you want Vera Larsson's killers caught...

you'll have to swallow your pride
and talk to Forss. Or, I'll have to.

All right, my friends,
it's time for oxtail ragout.

Mette, I remembered something else
from Nordkoster.

When Wendt came to borrow my phone,
he had a bag.

He just left it there and walked away.

How strange!

So I opened it.
It was completely empty.

Why did he want to use your phone?

He said he wanted to call a boat taxi
to go to Strömstad.

What time was that?

- About 11 pm.
- I see.

Do you think he could be involved
in the murder?

- Well, at least you got rid of Wendt.
- Yes.

One less hassle.

What's wrong?

- It doesn't solve my main problem.
- The original tape? - Yes.

- Do you think he's serious?
- About July 1st?

Nils would have put safeguards in place.

Drop me off here.

Don't you want me
to take you to the caravan?

There's something I have to tell you.

I hit Jackie Berglund this morning.

- You did what?
- She killed my cat yesterday.

Jackie Berglund?

A man came and threatened me,
saying I'd been snooping around her.

Then I found Elvis dead.

- So you hit her?
- Yes, in her shop.

Do you know who
Jackie Berglund is?

Yes,
a fucking call-girl who killed my cat.

Yes. And next time she
might kill someone else.

First she went to Videung
and asked about myself.

Then she talked to one of his escort girls.

Then she came to my shop and hit me.

- Just like that?
- Basically, yes.

Then yesterday she met Tom Stilton.
What the hell happened to him?

- Well, he's down and out.
- So why is she seeing him?

Is she looking into that Jill case?

- Have they reopened it?
- No.

They couldn't access anything sensitive.

- You guarantee that?
- Yes. I guarantee it.

Hi, darling.
- I thought you were working late.

I was. But I missed you.

A cigarillo?

- You stopped smoking years ago.
- Yes...

But now I'm having a cigarillo.

Just like that?

I haven't slept with anyone else.

I'm not ill.
My company's doing very well.

So...

I guess I'm just having a little...

personal crisis.

You never have crises,
certainly not one a cigarillo would fix.

You bulldoze your crises.

I want to make love.

Training for the Tjejmilen?
(ladies 10 km race)

- Did you find Acke?
- Yes.

He doesn't know
who you're talking about.

He doesn't know who the cage guys are.

In short, he doesn't know shit.

Is he telling the truth?
- I don't think so. He's scared shitless.

Speaking of ladies,
where do you get your earrings?

You're just jealous, Stilton.

See you.

I have information
about Vera Larsson's murder.

- She was probably killed by cage fighters.
- Cage fighters?

In one video you can see
a tattoo on one assailant.

'CF' stands for Cage Fighters.

They fight in cages
in an old bomb shelter in Västberga.

One is Acke Andersson.
He lives in Flemingsberg.

- Who's the information from?
- A reliable source.

- Why was the CID put onto this?
- So something gets done. Follow it up.

Certainly.

Your old sidekick Stilton
is sleeping rough.

Did you know that?

But he's the source.

- Bosse...
- Yes.

Wendt booked a ticket
in the name of Dan

Nilsson on the 4.35 am
train from Strömstad...

then took the 7.45 express
from Gothenburg...

arriving here at Central
station about 10.50.

He rented a car there at about 11.15.

Around noon he checked into the
Clarion Hotel on Ringvägen.

Forensics are examining his room.

- Any news on his phone?
- No.

They're so slow!

- Olivia.
- Hi, this is Ove Gardman.

I just got your messages
that you were trying to reach me.

Hi, good to hear from you. It's about
an old murder case I'm studying.

It happened in Hasslevikarna in 1990.
I believe you witnessed it.

- Yes, that's right. But how funny!
- What do you mean?

Well, something weird happened to me
in Costa Rica last week.

Why aren't you answering your phone?

- Did you hit Jackie Berglund again?
- Very funny.

Listen, Nils Wendt and Ove Gardman
met by chance just over a week ago.

In Costa Rica.
They talked about the beach case.

- Nils Wendt went straight to Nordkoster.
- Wait.

- Wendt and Gardman met?
- In Costa Rica.

How the hell do you know?

Ove Gardman just rang.
I'd been trying to reach him.

He said Wendt talked about a threat
and hidden evidence.

- That's very strange.
- I know. He hides for 27 years...

then he goes to Nordkoster
after Gardman talks to him.

That's when I saw Wendt on the beach.

He seemed to be looking for something.

Did you tell Gardman that?

Yes.

What do you think he was looking for?
