the car around the track

[NARRATOR] In the volcanic
mountains of Kapedapek,
Speed is competing in the most
unusual race of his life.
[tires squealing]
Ah!
[gasps]
[gasps]
[SPEED] The story really
begins before that car
nearly sent me
into the molten lava.
I received an invitation
from the country of Kapedapek
to compete in their
Fire Festival Race.
Gentleman, my country
likes its privacy.
I don't care what the
League of Countries says,
we don't want tourists!
I'm giving you an order,
Chief Zuma!
Open up your borders
or you'll be sorry!
Hmm... We're a proud people
and we do not take
orders from anyone.
Tell me, Chief, is there a
brave man among your tribe?
Yes.
Who is he, huh?
He's Kabala, the greatest
car racer on Earth.
That's your opinion, Chief,
because we know a driver
who we think is the
greatest racer on Earth.
[ZUMA] Then we will open our borders
if your racer beats ours!
[SPEED] And so, I went to
Kapedapek to race against Kabala
and others to decide which
of us was the bravest.
The race started when
the volcano erupted.
I will take you to the
finish line of the race
located at our border.
Come with me in the helicopters.
[ZUMA] But first, remember:
If Speed loses,
visitors will never be
allowed here again.
I hope Speed's all
right down there.
[SPARKY] Careful!
[SPRITLE] It's hard to
believe Speed's racing
underneath that volcano.
[SPEED] I've lost some time
because of that molten lava,
and I'm not sure if I'm headed
in the right direction.
I'll have to trust to luck.
[KADAR] I'll win easily.
None of the others has a chance.
[laughs]
[SPEED] That's strange.
I wonder what's causing
all the accidents.
[gasps]
[KADAR] An underground lake.
It blocked the way, so none
of us can continue the race.
We'll have to turn back.
Chief Zuma will have to tell
the League of Countries that
nothing could be decided
because the race was never finished.
Mr. Kadar.
Huh-- Oh, it's you, Speed.
What do you want?
Did you happen to see
that crash back there?
Wait a minute.
You think I caused it.
Well, you have any
evidence of that?
No...
[KADAR laughs]
--[rumbling] --[DRIVERS scream]
[rumbling continues]
A whirlpool!
[gasping]
[gasps]
[CREATURE roars]
[DRIVERS scream]
[SPEED whimpers]
We got to get away.
It won't be easy...
[gasps]
[SPEED] Oh... It was stone...
[KABALA chuckles]
[gasps]
The trees are made of stone.
The forest is petrified.
[gasps]
--[THUG A] Oh... --[gasping]
[THUG B] Beautiful...
[THUG Cl How sparkly...
Ah... [laughs]
What do we care about the race
when we found a
fortune like this?!
There are enough diamonds
here to make me
the richest man in the world!
But, Kadar, we were
told if we touched
any treasure while racing
it would be the end of us.
Shut up! We'll take as many
diamonds as we can grab!
[ALL grunting]
[THUGS screaming]
[gasps]
[SPEED] Wow...
[KADAR] Get back!
[SPEED] Huh?
[KADAR] So this is the
treasure of the Kapedapeks.
The most fabulous fortune
in the world,
and it's going to be mine!
Get back, I said!
The treasure belongs to the
Kapedapeks! You can't have it!
I'll pull this trigger if you don't leave!
[KABALA] I'm here to
protect the treasure.
[KADAR] I'm warning you!
Get out of here! Get out, or I'll shoot!
All right, I warned you!
[SPEED grunts]
Huh?!
So it's you, Speed!
[SPEED] Mm-hm.
Sorry I interrupted.
You're really going to be sorry,
Speed. I'll make sure of that.
Get rid of him.
[THUGS grunting]
[SPEED grunts]
'Kay...
[KADAR grunts]
[SPEED grunting]
[KADAR yelps]
[KABALA chuckles]
[SPEED] Huh...? Oh...
Racer X! You were disguised.
What's the meaning of this?
Will you tell me that? Huh? Well?
[SPEED] Just what are you
doing here anyway?
[RACER X] Well, Speed, ll...
[RACER X gasps]
[SPEED] What's the matter?
[RACER X] Look out!
[SPEED grunts]
[THUG A screams]
[gunshot]
[KADAR laughs]
[KADAR] Fools! So you both
tried to protect
the treasure of Kapedapek.
I'm surprised at you, Racer X.
Too bad you wasted your time
coming here, because it'll
cost you your life.
[laughs]
[rumbling]
And now, I've had more than
enough of your interference.
[SPEED] Oh... No!
[SPEED, RACER X scream]
Huh?!
[KADAR laughs]
And now, men,
we can take as much of
the treasure as
we can carry!
Don't leave any behind.
Try to take it all.
Our trunks are all filled up.
What about the rest
of this stuff?
Looks as if we're gonna have
to leave some of it here.
[KADAR] That's what you think!
I'll find room for it.

[THUGS] Whoa...
[KADAR] I'll find room for that!
[gulps]
[THUGS gasp]
Well, now we haven't
left anything,
so let's get out of here.
[engines revving]
It sounds as if they've gone.
Now we've got to find
our way out of here.
There must be another tunnel
somewhere. Let's look for it.
[RACER X] Mm-hmm.
Ah! There's a way out
right up ahead!
[SPEED] Racer X, why did
you disguise yourself
as a Kapedapekan?
[RACER X] Hm? I'll tell you.
I was taught to drive
mountainous roads
by a Kapedapekan named Kabala.
I knew none of the tricks of
how to race along those
tortured roads and broken
trails when I first met Kabala.
Every racing car driver in the
world was afraid of him,
but he was kind and helpful to me.
He taught me various techniques
which only he knew,
and then, when I became a
professional racing driver,
ll had a race with Kabala
on a mountain path.
Suddenly, before he had a
chance to avoid it,
there was a landslide, and his
car fell into the valley below.
I searched for him, but I
never saw him again.
So, to return his kindness,
I disguised myself as Kabala
and tried to protect the
treasure of the Kapedapeks.
And the borders of this land?
That's right, Speed. This race
was begun because someone didn't
like Kapedapek keeping
its borders closed.
And if you win this race, Speed,
the borders of Kapedapek
will be opened to anybody in
the world; the country'll be ruined.
That's nonsense! I'm getting
back into the race!
I don't care about any
silly reason for racing
like you just gave me!
I'm racing to win, that's all!
And I'm going to do it!
I'll see you at the
finish line, Racer X!
There's nothing you can
say that will stop me
from trying to be
the winner! Nothing!
[RACER X] Speed! Come back here!

All I'm interested in is winning.
[rumbling]
[PRIEST] Ah, welcome,
Chief Zuma.
We have been expecting you.
The cars will soon be reaching
the finish line here.

I've brought along
some friends of Speed Racer.
They'll be close to the border
here and ready to leave.
When the volcano erupts again,
the Fire Festival will be ended,
and the volcanic
road will be closed.
When will it erupt?
[PRIEST] Very soon.
[SPRITLE] Oh, Speed doesn't
have much time!
We'll go watch for him!

strangers wandering around.
That's why we keep
our borders closed.

land and went where you
are not allowed, and so,
for that, you will pay!

[SPRITLE] Oh! Oh, no!

a good boy! Let me go!
They were too greedy, and anyone
who becomes too greedy
is punished one way or another.

I can't leave this
treasure here,
I've got to try to
get away with it.
[screams]
[SPEED] That's Kadar's car.
Well, that's the end of him.
There's not much time,
Speed. We'd better hurry.

[SPRITLE whimpers]

The mountain's erupting!
[TRIXIE] Sparky, what
are we going to do?
[SPARKY] Just hope that Speed
comes out of that tunnel!
[TRIXIE] Oh! The rock's closing!
BOTH gasp)
- Oh, look at Speed!

- [TRIXIE] Speed you did it!

Oh, Speedy!
[chuckles]
Well, Speed won the race.

Gentlemen, it was a tie!
[CHANCELLOR] Hmm! No matter
what it was, I demand you
open your borders for anyone
who wants to come!

We'll never open our borders
even if you decide
to send an army!
[SPEED] That's enough!

will never race again
because of your argument?
Ninety-six of us started,
but only two of us
were able to finish.
There's been more than
enough trouble.
Why don't you and Kabala
fight to settle it?
