Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983–1987): Season 3, Episode 7 - Utopia Now - full transcript

Lee and Amanda go camping to track down an errant spy and a tax lobbyist who has a stash of explosives.

Nice work, Hollis.

We got 10 minutes before the
swing guard makes his rounds.

The rockets are
in the second row.

Mr. Sacker's gonna be
very happy with you, Hollis.

All right.

We haven't heard from Curt Hollis,
code name "Leprechaun," in three weeks.

Isn't this the guy who dropped out
of sight in Morocco for over a month?

Right. We finally tracked him down
in Tangiers living with a belly-dancer.

He's good but he has
this thing with the ladies.

Sounds like someone
else we know.

Cool it, will you?

I thought he just got back from
some hairy operation in Tehran.

He did.

I'm worried I might have sent
him back in the field too soon.

It was just supposed to be a simple
surveillance operation. Fill him in.

Yeah, Hollis' mission
was to find Peter Sacker...

probably the most outspoken
tax reformer in the country.

Lately, there have
been some reports.

Looks like Sacker's followers aren't
the harmless revisionists they claim to be.

Hollis was sent out to
confirm these reports.

He was supposed to locate and
infiltrate Sacker's base of operations.

A small community
he calls New Utopia.

We sent a team into the
location that he radioed from...

but there was no one there.

You think he got burnt?

Burned out is more probable.

Sacker was on a watch list.

He's not connected with any
violent or subversive behavior, yet.

Why send me, huh? Why
can't you put a rookie on this?

Oh, I am. I want
you to take Amanda.

Oh, Billy.

She grew up in Virginia.
Should know the countryside well.

She probably did a lot of
camping there with the Blue Jays.

Would you like a
chicken sandwich?

Uh... Amanda, this
isn't going to be a picnic.

Oh, I know. I'm not
expecting a picnic.

Wha...? Got enough reading
material there to start a library.

No, just the Junior
Trailblazers manual, campsites...

and the Junior Trailblazers map.

- Nothing wrong with the agency maps.
- I know. I've got twine and a compass...

and my Swiss Army knife. And
then there's my ace in the hole:

one waterproof match.

- Only one?
- Good scout only needs one.

I hate to disappoint you...

but this is nothing but a
chickenfeed assignment. Heh.

All right. Here we go.

Uh... I don't believe this.

According to this map, the
road we're on doesn't even exist.

- Well...
- "Well," what?

Well, go ahead and ask.

- Ask what?
- Ask me...

to get out the Junior Trailblazers
map so we can find out where we are.

Okay, Amanda, would you please
get out the Junior Trailblazers map?

- Surely.
- Hmm.

Excuse me.

Ahem. This area
does look familiar.

I think I used to come
camping here when I was little.

- Oh. Uh...
- Ahem. Yeah, what?

It works better that way. Ahem.

Well, Amanda, I'm afraid your knowledge
of the Blue Jays' secret campsites...

- isn't going to help us.
- You know what?

- What?
- Maybe not.

- What?
- But I bet you Cobb's Corner might.

And just what is
a Cobb's Corner?

Cobb's Corner is this little general
store out in the middle of nowhere.

You used to be able to go
there and have a root beer...

and find out what was
going on in a 50-mile radius.

You boys did a good job.

What's the matter?
You don't look happy.

I'm not.

You said we were supposed to be
blowing power lines, transformers.

So since when do we need
anti-aircraft rockets to do that?

I'll do the thinking. You're
paid to follow orders.

And you're paid a
lot. All of you are.

I'd like to know
what's going on.

I don't mind taking the risk, I just
want to know what I'm taking them for.

Let's get something
straight here, Hollis.

You were hired
on as a mercenary.

Yours is not to reason
why. Understood?

- You just follow orders.
- Yes, sir.

Tell me, Rogan, what do
you think of our Mr. Hollis?

He's wrapped a little
too tight for my money.

But if he just flew in from Central
America, I guess that's understandable.

What about you? How
do you feel about all this?

Like you said Mr. Sacker,
we're getting paid to do a job.

Your reasons are
your own business.

So you're not even a little bit
curious about what it is I'm up to here?

I got some ideas.

Let's just say, the
less I know, the better.

Hey, give me a hand
over here, would you?

And stay out, you
good-for-nothing!

Whoa!

- A little misunderstanding.
- What?

Are you kidding?

What do you folks need?
Gas? Food? Something to drink?

No, actually, we're looking
for a place called New Utopia.

Ain't we all?
Doesn't ring a bell.

Yeah, we're trying to find
a couple of friends of ours.

Peter Sacker and Curt Hollis.

Ask the missus. I'm only
here a couple days a month.

Well, maybe you
ought to introduce us.

My mama didn't
raise no fools. Heh.

Huh. Uh...
- Amanda.
- You're right.

I should wait here by the car.

Go on in.

You mangy dog.

Oops. Sorry about that. - Oh!

It's all right, ma'am. Close
only counts in horseshoes.

That was a miss.

- Hello there. Been hunting?
- Hi.

- Yup.
- Junior Trailblazer?

Hey.

- Ha-ha.
- Give me a break, lady.

- You think it's corny? I know.
- Yeah.

My boy, Philip, made it all the
way to Raccoon. He thinks it's corny.

Wow.

And it's too bad she couldn't
tell us anything about New Utopia.

It's all right.

- I ran into a Junior Trailblazer.
- What?

I ran into a Junior...

Look, just go on straight down
this road, when we get to the bend...

we'll kind of bear to the right.

I don't believe this.

- Hello.
- Can't you read the sign, pal?

We're not trespassing. We're
here to see Peter Sacker.

Mr. Sacker doesn't see visitors.

Ah. Well, we're making a
documentary film on him...

Mr. Sacker doesn't see visitors.

- Got it?
- Yeah. Yeah, I got it.

Now what?

Now we find out why
Mr. Sacker is so shy.

- Come on. We're going to be late.
- I'm coming.

- Hey, didn't Mom leave a message?
- I didn't see one.

You better bring that
chalk back from school.

- Let's go.
- Yeah.

- You know what that is?
- What?

That's an abandoned town where the
men who built the Potomac Canal lived.

- It's an historic landmark.
- Well, right now...

it's Peter Sacker's
version of Walden Pond.

Let's go down and see if
we can get a history lesson.

Yeah.

Hey.

Francine, have you
heard from Lee yet?

No, it's... He's not
due to call till 2:30.

- Why, something wrong?
- I'm not sure.

Was talking to a
source, telling me that...

Mr. Sacker once pulled a gun on
his opponent at a political convention.

And spent six months
in a mental institution.

I didn't read
anything about that.

According to my source, it was
hushed up in the interest of party unity.

That's terrific. Now we've got Lee out
there looking for a whacked-out agent...

an even wackier, probably
dangerous tax reformer...

with a housewife for a partner?

Stay on this, please, Francine.
I want to know their every move.

Yeah. Get him on the phone
right now. I need him now.

Wow.

- Look at this.
- Yeah.

Why do they need
all these computers?

Or all the explosives and
anti-personnel land mines.

And look at this.

Anti-aircraft. Hand-held.

- Why do they need that?
- That's a good question.

What's this stuff over here?

- I don't know.
- Army field radar units.

This make any sense to you?

There are X's at the White
House, Senate office buildings...

the Capitol, Library of
Congress, Pentagon.

And then these X's out
here in the middle of nowhere.

Don't know, but I got a feeling there's
more happening here than tax reform.

Yeah, you can bet on it.

- Come on, we better get out of here.
- All right.

Hey, man. How you doing?

- Can we stop for a minute?
- Yeah.

- Whew.
- Ahh.

- What do you got here?
- Don't know.

Amanda, those
Stinger rockets we saw?

- Yeah, that's a...
- Yeah, a safety cap off of one of them.

What are they planning up here?

Look, this whole slope's
been cleared away.

Ah...

- Power lines.
- Power lines?

You know those X's on the
map? They're power lines.

Next to 245. You know
when you drive past that spot...

how your radio goes
crazy with the static?

- Yeah.
- Well, the X's are power lines.

- That I don't know.
- Power lines and rockets.

We'd better get this back to...

So much as breathe,
and you're history.

Hey, aren't you overdoing
it a little with the gun?

- We didn't do anything wrong.
- Search him.

Well, I mean, come
on, we were just hiking.

You know? It's a... What?

It's a great day to be in the country.
- Shut up.

Oh. Uh...

He's clean.

I'm clean.

- Move it.
- Yeah, we better move it.

Move it along. Let's
go now. Come on.

Yeah. MAN 2: All right,
Sanchez, Miller, Ricky...

To your right.

- Oh, could I have this now?
- No.

- Okay. It's all right.
- Come here, darling.

- Nice try.
- I...

Forget trying to escape.
The mesh is wired to an alarm.

Okay. I know that was Hollis. He
looks exactly like his picture. But Lee?

Mm?

Are we in big trouble
or just average trouble?

I wish I knew. He took my gun, he
didn't respond to the greeting code.

You think he's gone over?

We may just find out.

- It's a great day to be...
- Cut the code crap.

I wanna know who you are
and what you're doing here.

Scarecrow. Seven-Alpha.
Security clearance 11.

Leprechaun. Delta 5.
S.C. 9. Who are you?

I don't have a code name.
Amanda King. We're here to help you.

Help me? You two wanna help me?

As soon as you get a
chance, you get out of here.

I'm on the biggest case in my
career and you two are about to blow it.

What's going on? What
are those weapons for?

Heh. Uh-uh.

No way, buddy. I ain't sharing
the glory with anybody on this one.

- All right, what're you two doing here?
- Uh, it's like I told them.

- We were just hiking.
- Spare me.

We found your camera
equipment in the truck.

Okay, you're onto us.

- We're filmmakers.
- That's right. And...

well, what we would really
like is an interview with you.

Yeah. We'd like to do a documentary
on you and your community.

Why would you want to
do a documentary on me?

Are you kidding? Peter
Sacker, the most innovative...

radical tax reconstructionist
of the 20th century? Come on.

Boy. Where were you four years
ago when I was running for office?

If I had three more
like you in my camp...

I'd probably be running
this whole country by now.

Instead of running around
trying to convert people...

to causes they don't
even understand.

Only have one
course of action left.

All right, we'll check you out.

If you're legit, you can
have your interview.

In the meantime, try to
enjoy your accommodations.

Do you get the feeling his elevator
doesn't go all the way to the top?

- Amanda?
- She's not here, Grandma.

- What are you doing?
- Hmm?

No. No, no, no. Ha, ha.

Gee.

- What's her car doing in the driveway?
- I don't know.

Haven't seen Mom
since we got back.

- Where's Jamie?
- Oh, Buck's helping him fix the stereo.

Oh. Here, you can have
all you want. Stereo?

I didn't think there was
anything wrong with the stereo.

Uh... No problem. I'll just get my
soldering iron, a little speaker glue...

and it'll be as good as new.

Be back with that glue.

- Buck, have you seen Amanda?
- No, I saw her car at home.

I just figured she
was out for a walk.

- Jamie, did she leave a note?
- I didn't see one.

Oh. That girl, I swear.

Oh. It's a definite plan.

Best way for an insurgent
terrorist group to isolate...

You know, mother is gonna be
awfully worried if I'm not home tonight.

Hey.

Telling me you're scared?

- Yes.
- I don't blame you.

I'm a little worried myself.

I just don't think we can
trust Hollis for anything.

Well, you know, if we're gonna get
out of this, we got to do it ourselves.

You got it.

Amanda, I think we can pick this
lock if we could just get to that knife.

International Federal Film.

Hello, I'd like to speak
to Lee Steadman, please.

I'm sorry, Mr. Steadman
isn't in right now.

He's out on location today. Can
one of our other directors help you?

Yes, how about Amanda Keane?

Oh, I'm sorry, Miss
Keane is on location too.

Perhaps you'd like to speak
to one of our producers.

No. No, thank you.

Lee missed his 4:30 check-in.

And someone is checking
their covers. It's trouble.

Activate a backup team. If
Lee misses his 6:30, send them.

Okay.

What the hell is
going on out there?

How's it going? AMANDA: Fine.

Okay. Now, I'm just going to tie
a bowline so it won't slip, all right?

The rabbit comes up the hole, goes
around the tree, back down in the hole.

- Don't tell me.
- What?

- Junior Trailblazers.
- Yeah.

- I thought so.
- Okay. Come on.

Let me get this out.
Wait a minute. It's on...

- Are you ready?
- Yeah.

One, two, three.

Damn.

Okay. It's just a
little short, that's all.

"Just a little short."

"Little short."

Okay, what if I get down lower?

- Perfect.
- Yeah.

- Okay.
- Now, very, very carefully.

- Slowly.
- Easy.

Oh, you got it. Okay.

Pick up the slack.

I think it's there. Yep.

All right, let's see.

- Just... Just use the, uh...
- What? What?

- Use the little tweezer.
- There.

Look, I say we let them go.

Keep them here, somebody's
bound to miss them.

They're gonna send
somebody else out here.

I say we can't take any chances.
We've worked too long and too hard.

In two days, our teams
are gonna put a crimp...

into the communications
network in Washington...

but only if we have
the element of surprise.

You're the boss.

I'm just saying that if somebody
comes out here snooping around...

it could screw
up this operation.

In two days, they
can look all they want.

It won't make any difference
then. Just get rid of them.

I can't just execute them out here.
There's people in this community...

that won't take kindly
to killing civilians.

They'll blow up anything,
but they're not into murder.

Then lose them, quietly.

There must be a dozen
places in those backwoods...

where bodies won't be
found for a decade or two.

Okay.

Come on in.

Got more room in there?

I got it.

- Okay.
- Come on.

- Let me get these down here.
- Get down.

Hollis.

- That should validate his cover, huh?
- Yeah. Come on.

All right.

Go like clockwork.

Better.

Yeah, five easy,
unprotected targets.

Only need to hit three, and
PREDEC 2 goes into effect.

President gets evacuated to
the Underground White House.

And you get a chance
to revenge an old grudge.

Hmm. Well, since
you've guessed...

if blowing up the leader's the
only way to make political change...

then that's what I intend to do.

- They're gone.
- What?

The film people. They
jumped Hollis and took off.

Put out an alert. Simple, huh?

Hey, those film people, they're
gone. I want you to find them.

Yeah, guys, over there. Come
with me. Find them! All right.

When I get this started, you get on
the CB, try to relay a message to Billy.

I'll give you the channel
and the call letters.

All right.

That side. See anything?

I found them. Over here.

They're here.

This is an emergency.
Somebody, come in, please.

Hold on, Amanda. This
is going to get rough.

They're heading for the
fire road. Right on their butt.

Does anybody hear me?

This is Baby Moon.
What's your problem?

Hello, Baby Moon.
We need the police.

Uh, honey, I'll try old Smokey,
but he's in the next county.

No, there's no time for that. Tell
him he's gotta relay an SOS for us.

Call International Federal
Film in Washington.

- You will have to relay an SOS for us.
- Four, Delta, Charlie.

- Four, Delta, Charlie.
- Red Bravo, three-three.

Red Bravo, three-three.

I copy, Little Darling.
Baby Moon, over and out.

Turn around. Something
wrong with the way we're headed.

I can't turn around. What's
wrong with the way we're heading?

I don't remember, but I've
been hiking up here before.

- Well, think.
- I'm trying.

I remember. Stop!

- Why?
- It dead-ends...

into a pond.

Hollis is right, Mr. Sacker.

We kill them here, some of
these men aren't going to like it.

Take them out in the woods. I want
them dead and I want it taken care of now.

Yes, sir.

Hey, where'd he go with that?

Well, folks, time for a
little drive in the country.

Watch him. See
that he does his job.

You should come with me.

I'm afraid that's all we have
to go on right about now.

You're asking us to
go to a PREDEC 3...

because some trucker
named Baby Moon...

relayed an SOS to some CB
nut called Gearjam Granny?

The message
those nuts relayed...

included the call letters
of one of my best agents.

Our PREDEC 2 entails evacuating
the president and Joint Chiefs of Staff...

to the Underground White House.

We'd better be damn
sure of ourselves.

We do know that the
Washington communication lines...

are in danger, code
name, Red Bravo.

That much the agent
was able to relay to us.

Why hasn't this agent been able to
give us any more specific targets?

They were in trouble before
communications were cut.

If you had ever been a
field agent you'd know that.

Now, we don't even
know where they are.

- Gentlemen, the bottom line is...
- Excuse me, Mr. Melrose.

The bottom line is, we can't take the
chance that this information is false.

If this is a subversive
terrorist attack from the inside...

or part of a coordinated external
attack on the United States...

we have to secure the safety of the
president and his Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I'm afraid if there's any threat, we have
no choice but to initiate a PREDEC 3.

Be prepared for a
PREDEC 2 state of alert.

You'd better be right
on this one, Mr. Melrose.

Yes, sir.

Better hurry. There's
not much time.

All right, now you'd better
tell me what is going on here.

Look, this thing has
gotten way out of hand.

I thought I could handle
it, but I'm in over my head.

- What is Sacker up to?
- I'm not sure.

Got teams blowing up Washington's
communications network...

day after tomorrow.

But it's just a diversion. I'm
not sure what he's really up to.

He keeps talking about revenge,
but I don't know who or how or...

I think the man's
gone off the deep end.

Lee.

Look, hit me and
make it look good.

- The key.
- No time for it, come on.

Nothing I could do.
He surprised me.

Save the performance
for Sacker. I'm not buying.

Nothing at the original
coordinates, Billy.

- Like the earth swallowed them up.
- Keep looking.

- It's over a hundred square miles.
- Keep looking.

- You rested? Come on, let's go.
- Oops! No.

- We've gotta cooperate.
- There's a swamp that way.

- Yes, but the highway is that way.
- Swamp is better.

At least the trucks
can't follow us there.

Yeah. Oh, no, no, no.

All right, all right.

Why didn't you go after them?

I figured you wouldn't
want this one getting away.

Besides, they're not going
very far in those chains.

Who are you working for?

Well, no matter. You're
gonna wind up with your friends.

Buck, I am really worried. I
mean, we haven't heard a word.

She has never gone this long without
leaving some kind of a message.

Easy. I know how
it is after a hard day.

Hit the first bar for a little happy
hour, maybe meet somebody, get lucky.

That may be you.
That's not my daughter.

Look, the chances of her
being hurt are practically minimal.

She's probably run off.

Happens every day.

Women can't cope with the pressures
of everyday living, so they split.

- I'm gonna call the police.
- Forget it.

Takes 24 hours before they'll
act on a missing-persons report.

I think they've given up.

Let's see if we can find
someplace to dry out.

Keep your eyes open.
They're out there somewhere.

Tighten it up. Don't need
to lose any of you guys.

This is as far as the trucks can go.
- Okay. Go on foot from here.

Ah... LEE: Here.

- One match.
- Yeah, you're a pretty good scout.

- Yeah.
- Wait. Ho, ho, ho.

Don't make the fire any bigger.

They've probably given up for the
night, but we shouldn't take chances.

Let's hope it stays.

- Still cold, huh?
- Yeah, just a little.

Look here. Let's huddle closer.

- Let our body heat warm us up.
- Yeah.

- How's that?
- Oh, that's much better. Thank you.

- Yeah? You sure you're okay now?
- Yeah, it's much better.

Good.

- I'm scared.
- Hey...

I know we've been
in tight places before.

But this time I'm really scared.

I know.

I keep thinking of the first
time we met at the train station.

If I'd never given you that
package, you wouldn't be...

Come on, now. Come
on, it's not your fault.

Nobody forced me to
take it. I knew the risks.

I'm an adult. No guts, no glory.

Hey.

Look, it's not over yet.

They've got to look for us on
foot, right? That evens it up a little.

You know, that's one of the
things that I really like about you.

You always find
the silver lining.

Yeah. It's no business
for a pessimist.

- Lee.
- Mm-hm.

If we don't make it...

- Hey.
- Wait.

If we don't...

I just want you to know that...

I...

really am glad to
have known you.

Well, the same goes here.

You know, to tell you
the truth, Amanda...

I've learned a lot from
you in the last couple years.

Lee, I always thought I
was pretty much a burden.

Well, really, I have learned a
lot about people, about myself.

You know, stuff they
don't teach at the agency.

That's really
nice of you to say.

- What's the matter? Oh.
- Oh. I got a cramp right...

Over there.

Get down.

I see something.

There.

Hold your fire. Hold your fire.

We'll wake up the countryside. Keep
those lights pointed at the ground.

- Did we get them?
- I'll check it out.

Forget it. There's quicksand
and God-knows-what out there.

They'll never get
through it tonight.

Post two men so they don't
come out the way they went in.

Tomorrow, we come back in the morning
and have a good old-fashioned manhunt.

I think we ought to get a little rest.
- Yeah.

- We got a long day ahead of us.
- Okay.

Aah!

Amanda... AMANDA: Shh.

I like to sleep on my right.

Yeah, well, I like to
sleep on my left side.

Come on.

Yeah, that'll
light up real nice.

Another power line is down.

I think you should
wake the president.

I can trust your
judgment, Melrose?

Yeah, I think I can.

The president is
being evacuated.

There's still no sign
of Lee and Amanda.

Francine, check
everything you can.

- We've checked everything twice.
- Then triple-check it.

One more sweep.

I had to do some rescheduling.
By now, PREDEC 2 is in effect.

I want those two.

Aside from Hollis, they're the
only ones who can tie us into this.

They're a memory. Spread out.

Keep an eye out over on that side.
- All right, I got it.

Okay. LEE: Maybe
this will slow them down.

Easy.

- Got it? Okay.
- Yeah.

This place was closed
before. Come on, it's worth a try.

Excuse me. I'd like to ask you a
few questions if you don't mind, okay?

Wanna know if you've
seen these people.

Have you seen that gentleman?
- Uh-uh.

How about him? - No.

- This lady?
- She looks familiar.

- Over there. She went that way.
- Thank you. Come on.

Wait a sec.

I don't know if we can
make it much farther.

I know. It's only a matter
of time before they catch up.

Wait a minute,
what's that? Come on.

My God, I knew it was out here,
but I didn't think it was this close.

On the other side of this fence is the
president's Underground White House.

Now it's all starting
to make sense to me.

This is what Sacker
was really after.

It's like Hollis said. The bombs
and map, they were just a diversion.

Yeah, if enough communication
lines are knocked down...

a condition called
PREDEC 2 goes into effect.

The president is evacuated to
the Underground White House...

by helicopter.

That's what the
anti-aircraft missiles are for?

Yeah.

We've only got one
choice, Amanda.

We got to double back and
just hope we can slip by them.

Yeah, this should
just work. Come on.

I hope Amanda's little friend
is right. Strike teams alerted?

- Just waiting for your orders.
- Let's do it.

- Initiate contact. MAN
1: Red team, move out.

Blue team, move out. - Let's go.

Come on, flank them, come on.

We're under attack.
- Take cover!

Come on, they must
have doubled back.

Got it.

All right.

Now, you tell your boys that
the game is over and we won.

No way.

- Throw down your weapons.
- Into the stream.

All right, now you get up.

All right.

We know what's going down.
You're gonna tell me where.

- I don't know what you're...
- The president.

Sacker's gonna try to kill
him. Tell me everything...

or you're going up
as an accessory.

There's a slope about a mile behind
the camp. We cleared the trees.

- I think he's there.
- See, that wasn't so bad, was it?

Okay. You're gonna take us
back to where you left your truck.

Now move it.

Don't push me. - Hey.

Listen, I think I figured
out Sacker's revenge plan.

Come on, I hear the
president's helicopter.

This is the spot.

- Cover him.
- Yeah.

Sacker!

Uh-uh.

That was close. LEE: Yeah.

Only counts in horseshoes.

Mother, I'm sorry. Look, I
just couldn't call you, okay?

No, there was no telephone.
Mother, I'm very sorry.

I was up to my neck.

Amanda, you know that I trust
you and that I love you very much.

And I know that you wouldn't
purposely do anything wrong.

- But...
- Mother, I'll talk to you later, okay?

- Hello there.
- Hi.

Well, thanks for the picnic. You sure
know how to give a girl a good time.

You make a mean
chicken sandwich.

- Oh, my BLT is even better.
- Oh, toasted wheat?

- Yeah. Mm-hm. Just a touch.
- Crisp bacon? Mayo? Perfect.

- Lee.
- Mm?

- About last night...
- I know, I know.

Just two cold people
seeking a little warmth, right?

Not exactly.
