That's a good one!

Looks like somebody's caught a cold.

Some New Year's this is!

It's gotten really chilly in here!

It was really cold up in the Land of Ezo...
[Ezo: old name for Hokkaido.]

There were blizzards every day...

There you go again! You're talking about
that time you met a bear, aren’t you?

I don't know if this story
really fits with a happy New Year...

...but just listening to the snow
makes me want to tell it anyway.

What story?

I thought I'd never tell
this to anyone in my life...

...but I'll at least let you hear it.

It's the story of how
I met someone I'll never forget.

Now, the blizzards up there are nasty.

I was heading for a village
close to the town of Oshamanbe.

Why? No, don't bother asking me that!

So there I was, walking through the snow...

Give it up, all of you.

I'm afraid you won't find me very appetizing.

I slashed and I slashed,
but they still kept coming.

It was a Sisyphean task.

Eventually, I was about to give in.

My opponents didn't fear death, after all.

I thought I was a goner.

And I was ready to face my demise, when...

The arrival of that creature saved my life.

The wolves saw him and ran away.

But then he suddenly vanished.

Thinking back on it, that was Jamaikuru.

Jamaikuru!

The Ainu dog Jamaikuru...

The aforementioned dog
is a blind and fierce hound...

...uh, who has caused i-immense
damage to the r-r-residents of this fiefdom...

He who can bring the h-head
of the aforementioned dog...

...will receive a reward.
A reward of 500 ryo in gold!

Heh, that 500 ryo will be mine!

I think you are laughing too soon!

What are you, scared? It's just a dog!

You idiot! It may be a dog,
but it's bitten several men to death!

Your meagre skill isn't going to...

And you think that a samurai swinging
around a broadsword will do any better?

What? Shut up!

The five hundred ryo will be mine!
You all should leave while you have the chance!

Hey, masseur! What did
you come here for, anyway?

Oh, I'm here for the blind
dog Jamaikuru's head as well...

It's Jamaikuru!

Ja-Jamaikuru!

It's Jamaikuru!

See, I was after the money.

And it was 500 ryo, no less!

With that kind of money,
I could go down to Nagasaki and
get a great Western doctor to fix my sight.

The rumours of 500 ryo were
what brought me to Ezo in the first place.

And back then, I was getting
more and more sick of my blindness.

J-Ja-J-J-Ja-Ja-J-Ja...

That son of a dog!

I got him!

Five hundred ryo! Five hundred ryo!

I'm rich!

Now let's finish him off...

Ah, he's still alive!

As a blind man myself, I could
understand what he was thinking.

He was trying to lure his
enemies in, then defeat them.

That dog...

Jamaikuru...

Good grief...

Thanks to you, I didn't
end up lost. I truly thank you.

Traveller...

You have blood on your garments.

What have you slain with
that sword-cane of yours?

Oh, you mean this?

I've just slain about ten wolves.

Ten Ezo wolves?

I take it you're a swordsman then?

Oh, no...that'd be an exaggeration...

You are here to slay
the Nichene-Kamuy, then.

Nichene?

Nichene-Kamuy. The wicked god.
You wish to slay that dog, do you not?

Yes, actually I do.

In spite of your blindness?

I know, it is quite pitiful.

I just want the 500 ryo.

I am hoping that the
money shall help me see again.

Is that so? And you have
come from Edo for that?

But that dog will never be caught, no matter
how many ryo the Matsumae Fiefdom pays.

You know something about Jamaikuru?

Yes.

Is there something more to this, then?

I did think to myself that 500 ryo
seemed a bit much for a reward...

That dog, you see...

...knows the location
of the village's treasure.

Eh?! That dog does?

That dog knows the location of the treasure?

That is why the Matsumae
Fiefdom has issued a reward for him.

What do you mean, the dog knows it?

You seem to be a good person, so I'll tell you.

Until just ten years ago...

...this place was a hamlet
called Pauchikara Village.

Pauchikara Village...

It was a peaceful hamlet that never knew strife.

But then, they learned that the samurai of
Matsumae Fiefdom planned to attack the hamlet.

Their target was the treasure that
had been passed down in the village.

The Chieftain carved a map to the
treasure on Jamaikuru’s forehead.

Most of the villagers died in the battle,
but the survivors were tortured for the location
of the treasure, and they perished as a result.

All of the villagers were killed
without revealing the treasure's location...

...but one man could not
bear the suffering any longer...

...and told them that the map to the
treasure was on Jamaikuru's forehead.

The samurai of Matsumae have been
pursuing Jamaikuru for the past ten years.

But he cannot be caught.

Jamaikuru cannot be caught.

Is that so?

Is that the truth?

If only I'd known...

I wouldn't have come all the way to Ezo!

The lord of Matsumae Fiefdom is truly awful!

Doesn't the treasure belong to the village?

Now, traveller...

I have a favour to ask of you.

What might that be?

Will you slay Jamaikuru?

Y-You've got to be kidding!

I cannot help but pity
him after hearing that story!

It is because I pity him that
I am asking you to slay him!

What do you mean?

I believe that he is living a life of torment.

He is chased about and forced to kill...

He has to kill again when he is cornered...

Would you consider that a life of happiness?

Poor Jamaikuru...

I'll bet he is wishing for death.

And I know he wants to
be at rest by Rakkuru's side.

Please, put him out of his misery!

Well, I hear what you're saying...

But I'm a blind man. I'll never find him.

I know where you can find him.

And I can tell you.

You know where Jamaikuru is?

He is nearby.

There is a deep valley
just below the mountain.

In that valley are the graves
of the villagers of Pauchikara.

Nobody knows of those graves.

Rakkuru's grave is there, as well.

Jamaikuru stays by Rakkuru's
graveside from nightfall to daybreak.

He also sings at the grave
of the man who cared for him.

Do you hear Jamaikuru's sorrowful howls?

I would never slay him, not even for 500 ryo!

The truth is, traveller...

The map is no longer
on Jamaikuru's forehead.

What? It's not?

I removed it long ago.

How did you know about the map?

Didn't you say that all
the villagers were killed?

I think I have to explain myself to you, traveller.

The truth is...

I was the one who told them about the map!

I was captured and tortured
with sleep deprivation...

Sleep deprivation?

They kept me awake for days on end.

I ended up in a trance...

...and told them against my will!

I'm a traitor!

How many times I have wished for death!

But I cannot die so long as Jamaikuru lives.

You've tormented yourself to that extent?

He has been tormented on my account.

Jamaikuru!

Jamaikuru!

If you're there, come on out!

Jamaikuru...

I'm not here to slay you.

I wanted to speak to you,
as one blind man to another.

Please understand me.
I want to be your friend.

Only the blind can understand the blind, am I right?

You've had it so hard.

Will you come over here, Jamaikuru?

Come...

Come over here...

You've gone through so
much pain, haven't you?

Wh-Wh-What's the matter?

J-Jamaikuru...

Y-You...

You took that blow on purpose, didn’t you...

And so I cried.

I cried like I'd never cried before in my life.

The elder was right.

Jamaikuru didn't want to live.

I understood what was in
his mind...so clearly that it hurt.

Wasn't that a rather
unfitting story for New Year's?

No, that's not true.

That was a perfect New Year's story.

Did you understand it, Sabu?

I did, Ichi.

Brother Sabu!

Let's go fly a kite!

Sure!

Hurry! Hurry!

Ha, I'm on my way!

Perhaps the heavens
heard Ichi's tragic recollections.

That night, there was a
snowfall over Edo unlike any before...

...that lasted until dawn.

It was a thick, white snow, much like
the one that fell on the mountains of £20.

As the first day of spring comes,
the skies of Edo are clear and blue...

...and the peak of
Mt. Fuji seems larger than ever.

But there is no sky in
the jail of Tenma District.

Of all things, Sabu the thief-taker
is arrested and thrown in prison.

There, he finds a world entirely
different from the cheerful outside.

The cold wind bites at his skin.

And no mercy is given
to a fresh convict like him.

He is tormented to the point of collapse...

The prison boss, who can
put up with it no longer...

...and attempts to escape with Sabu...

...is a member of a group
of thieves who stole 5000 ryo.
