Relatively Evil (2019–…): Season 1, Episode 4 - A Family to Fear - full transcript

59-yr-old Susan Greene and 62-yr-old Dennis Goins get a new lease on love later in life. After they tie the knot, the couple must face each other's dark side, and worse, family members. ...

Narrator: This is the true story

About what happens
when an outsider

Is let in,

And families are torn apart.

Lies...

She wasn't very happy about mom
and dennis being together.

Narrator:...Betrayal...

They said they found
a body outside,

And they didn't tell us
who it was.

Narrator:...And murder...

That was no way to go.

[ gunshot ]

Narrator:...It's all relative.

Snyder: Someone was trying
to conceal this dead body.

That's a "what are you
gonna do" moment.

Narrator: It's a new year,
and new love is in the air

For 62-year-old dennis goins
and 52-year-old susan green.

You ready for this?

Yes.

I remember that phone call
like it was yesterday --

When my mom gave me
that call saying

That she met a man.

Oh, boy. [ laughs ]

That's all I can say.

But she told me his name
was dennis and he was great

And he was the the knight
in shining armor.

And he hung the sun, moon,
and stars.

And he proposed
on valentine's day.

Narrator: But before the two
can marry,

They have a funeral
to attend.

At 87 years of age,

Dennis' father passed away.

The eldest of
his father's two sons,

The pair shared a special bond,

Making the loss
especially hard.

Beach: Dennis was an
intelligent, happy-go-lucky guy

That never had a bad day.

Soberanes: He had money...

But dennis wasn't flashy.

He had an air about him.

He was a pretty private person.

Narrator: He's also
very grateful

To have susan by his side
during this difficult time.

Major: With mom and dennis,

They had something so special.

It was so unique.

Beach: And he was looking
for somebody to be his soulmate

To spend
the rest of his life with,

And sue was it.

Narrator: As the newcomer,
it's important for susan

To show her support
to her future in-laws.

Major: Dorothy, dennis' mom,

Oh, she was just
a pleasant human being.

She was just genuine,
just like dennis.

Narrator: But she finds out
the others in the family

Are cut from
a very different cloth.

Dennis' brother is named gary.

He's younger than dennis.

They were not alike.

Soberanes: Gary was jealous
of dennis from childhood on up

Because, you know,
dennis was the golden child.

He always did well,
he always prospered,

And gary didn't.

Narrator: Nothing bugs him more
than how dennis got in

On the ground floor
in silicon valley

And made it big.

I am guaranteed
that gary was resentful

Of dennis and his success.

Narrator:
And dennis' relationship

With his only daughter

Is also on shaky ground.

I'd say aubrey was
a bit of a wild child.

She was an only child
in a fairly well-off family,

So she never really
had to beg for much.

And I think that's part
of what her downfall was.

Major: Aubrey was in her 30s.

From what I know,
she never really had a job.

She was always
asking him for money.

Narrator: There is no hiding
that money problems

Lie at the root
of this family tree,

Which makes the issue

Of their deceased patriarch's
estate a contentious one.

Well, ultimately, when
dennis's father passed away,

All of the funds
that dorothy and dennis' dad

Had together went
into dorothy's trust.

I'd estimate the trust
at probably a million dollars.

Hi.
Good to see you again.

Thank you for coming.

Thank you.

Major: Dennis was put in charge
of the trust

Because gary wasn't
responsible with money.

Hey, bud.
Good to see you.

Good to see you, too.

Remember
that business proposition

We were talking about?

Do you really think this is
the time or the place?

Every time I try
and talk to you,

You just, like,
ignore me.

It's dad's funeral.

As far as I know, gary
had odd jobs here and there.

But I don't know
what exactly he did.

Everything okay?

This is none
of your business.

This is
between me and my brother.

Mom didn't like gary.

There was always
some type of turmoil or trouble

That always came with his name.

It soon will be
her business.

Narrator: Despite the explosive
family dynamics,

Susan is all in for better...

...Or for worse.

Two months after the funeral,

Dennis and susan
take a giant step closer

To their happily ever after.

When they buy their dream home

Far from dennis'
overreaching family.

Grants pass is its own
little entity. [ laughs ]

It's southern oregon.

It is beautiful.

A big small town --

Best way to put it.

Major: It was just
such a neat house.

It was very mountainous,
and I believe it was like 40,

401/2 acres
or something like that.

It was huge.

Dennis was an avid hunter.

He wanted to have
some land of his own.

It had the wild game
and everything like that.

Narrator: Once they're settled,

Susan finds a job
working at an animal clinic.

All our clients adored her.

Veterinary office.
Can I help you?

She would go out
and hug the clients

And hug the dogs
and hug the cats.

And how does 2:00 sound?

She was just a very friendly,
outgoing person.

[ gasps ]

It was always
kind of humorous

Because susan was
such an animal lover

And didn't want anything killed,

And dennis was a hunter,
you know.

Narrator: For dennis and susan,
it's about new love,

A new town,
and a new life.

Everything has
fallen into place.

That is,

Until dennis' family
sneaks back into the picture.

Since their last encounter
at their father's funeral,

Tensions between the brothers
have been running high.

It was my understanding
that gary had asked dennis

For $100,000
to buy a long-haul truck.

Did you get a chance to look
at that information I gave you?

You never learn,
do you?

Dennis had become the executor
of the account,

And he wanted to protect
his mom's moneys.

Money's there.
Yeah.

The money's there,
but it's not set up

For any half-baked idea.

Soberanes: Gary was angry.

He was angry
that he couldn't get any money.

I feel it was a point
of contention

That dennis
controlled the trust.

Narrator: Dennis insists their
mom's estate is off limits,

But he's willing to consider
loaning gary the money himself.

Okay, but a couple of things
need to happen first.

You have to have
a trucker's license

Before you drive
a big truck.

He gave him a couple of options
as to --

"you can go to school, you can
do this, you can do that."

Fine.

Narrator: What gary
doesn't realize

Is that willing
to consider really means

Dennis must run it
by his soon-to-be wife.

Susan was definitely
not gary's advocate.

So how did it go
out there?

He tried to hit me up
for some more money.

Why do you do this?

Hon,
he's my brother.

And she knew from day one
that he was going

To try to do
something like this.

You seriously need to think
this stuff over.

Mom wanted to make sure dennis
wasn't being taken advantage of.

How much
did he ask you for?

He's gonna
empty out your pockets.

I am so concerned about
what he's doing,

And every time he comes here,
it's for my --

Hey, bro,
we gonna do this?

Yeah.

Narrator: Despite their move,
the issue of money

Continues to threaten
to tear this family apart.

I would say that dennis' money
is more trouble

Than it was worth.

Vandehey: I never
in a million years

Thought that it was
as serious as it was.

Narrator: In early summer 2010,

Susan green and dennis goins
are settled

Into a life of domestic bliss,

And both are
looking forward

To making their partnership
official.

Before meeting dennis,
my mom was very --

I wouldn't say
she wasn't happy,

But I think she was lonely.

She definitely found
that prince charming

That she was looking for.

Narrator: But as always,
with a new spouse

Comes a new family.

And when dennis' younger brother
gary pressures him for money,

Cracks in the couple's
perfect facade start to form.

You would think money
makes you happy,

But brings a lot of headaches.

Gary needs a $100,000 loan
for a new business venture.

While dennis
considers the request,

Gary hits him up
for even more money.

His brother just was like a dog
with a bone.

You know, just keep going,
going, going,

And he wouldn't let it go,

Wouldn't let it go,
wouldn't let it go.

Gary: Two months rent,
pay off my credit card,

A little over 20...
Monthly bill...

Emergency room bill...

All I would need is $75...

$200 for a new windshield.

Approximately $435...

This gives me a little room.

Soberanes: Susan would
just like,

"he's asking for money again,"

And she would tell me
about e-mails

Where he would be harassing
dennis for money.

Mom didn't like the fact
that he was being used

Because she cared
for him so much.

I just don't want him
to make a fool of you.

It was putting a strain
on their relationship.

I got it.
I'm handling it.

Narrator: But when it comes
to gary,

There is no reason
to believe

Anything can ever be
under control.

Vandehey: Dennis had noticed
that his mom

Had been just giving
gary money left and right,

And he wanted to protect
his mom's moneys.

Beach: She was early stages
alzheimer's.

Her cognitive senses
were fading quickly.

Mom,
you need to sign this.

Okay?

Where?

Sign on this line
right there.

Narrator: To be safe,
dennis puts

All of dorothy's funds
into a trust.

This means he must co-sign any
future transactions she makes.

What's going on here?

This isn't about you,
brother.

Oh, I think it is.

Beach: They had an altercation
where gary pulled a gun

On dennis in front
of his mother,

And basically,
dennis told him,

"if you're ever gonna pull a gun
on me, you better use it."

Not here.

You need to go home.

Because mom's going
gonna see one of her sons die

Right in front of her
right now.

When having the conversation
about, you know, dennis' money,

Was it more trouble
than it's worth?

Money, the root
of all evil.

Beach: Dennis was always alert
is the best way to put it.

And I know dennis always had
a weapon within reach.

He was very measured. Dennis
wouldn't really talk about it.

He was a real
private person.

It was very frustrating.

I could tell
that he didn't know

How to get out
of this situation.

But gary wasn't the only one
always having a hand out.

Narrator: Dennis' only daughter,
aubrey,

Never needed for anything,

And that's the way
her father wanted it.

But now she is 30 years old
and has a boyfriend in tow.

Major: Aubrey is
a unique individual.

Not nice. [ laughs ]

Soberanes: I would not describe
her as very friendly.

I met her, but she did not...

Chat with any of us.

She just was standoffish,

Almost to the point
of kind of being rude.

Sue's impression was that
she was a very spoiled girl

Who always got what she wanted,

And then, when daddy said no,

Then she threw her tantrums.

Major: Dennis did
give her money.

He was not supporting her fully
in her 30s.

You remember susan.

But she was still coming around
asking for money.

Susan:
We weren't expecting you.

What brings you up
this way?

I could use an advance.

Alright.
Wait right here.

I would say aubrey's boyfriend
that she brought was...Sketchy.

You know, just not --

I wanted to lock my car
and my doors,

Let's just say that.

So when's the wedding?

Susan: Soon.

We're hoping
you can join us.

Must be true love.

Major: Aubrey wasn't
very happy about

Mom and dennis
being together.

My mom tried to have
a relationship with aubrey,

And aubrey
gave a lot of pushback.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

Love you.

When you have resources
like that that are yours

And you have family
constantly that need help,

It just goes on and on and on,
and then the spiral begins.

What was all that?

Vandehey: I believe
the biggest argument

That dennis and susan
ever had

Was about family.

Just taking care of her.

Whenever you have a blended
family, things like that happen.

It is what it is.

I'm done.

Narrator: How hard can one
push their partner

To cut ties
with a toxic family,

Especially when susan's
own financial troubles

Come into question.

I did get the impression that
she had a big credit card debt.

Soberanes: Susan doesn't talk
about money.

She would just talk about her
working to pay off her debts

That she brought
into the relationship.

And I'm not gonna ask.
It's one of those things.

Major: Mom did come
to the marriage with some debt.

She had a lot of the credit
cards and stuff like that

That, you know,
she was living off of.

Dennis was very adamant

That he was not going to pay off
that credit card debt.

Narrator: Still, once dennis
and susan get married,

Her money woes
would all go away.

You're giving away
all the money.

I don't think I should
have to explain it to you again.

Money just corrupts.
It's not worth anything.

Dennis was a very
generous person,

But you have
to draw the line somewhere.

When are you gonna learn?
You've got to stop this.

Narrator: For many couples,

Money troubles would hold up
a wedding

Or, at the very least,
necessitate a prenup.

That's not dennis
and the soon-to-be susan goins.

Once the big day arrives,

They prepare to walk down
the aisle without looking back.

For the wedding,
I wasn't able to go

Because I had
two young kids at home,

And I was expecting
my little girl.

Dennis' daughter aubrey did not
go to the wedding either.

Beach: She reached out to dennis
a couple days before

And said, "dad, I need money.

Can I get up there?
Can you loan me some money?"

And dennis
was finally exasperated enough

And said, "just forget it,
don't worry about it."

So she was not at the wedding.

Narrator: But they aren't
the only family members missing.

Dennis' brother
was not at the wedding.

What's going on here?

Beach: Gary was so upset.

It was about money
and resentment.

This isn't the last.

Narrator: Without anyone
to object,

Dennis and susan say "I do"
in front of a few close friends.

It was beautiful.

Fairy tale.

Narrator: The bittersweet day
comes and goes.

And at first,
dennis and susan's life

Is nothing short
of wedded bliss.

Soberanes: They were
in their heyday.

Denise would always have
his vodka on the rocks.

Susan would have
a glass of wine.

It was fun.

Narrator: But no honeymoon
lasts forever.

A year after saying their vows,
the greed and resentment

Surrounding their relationship
returns with a vengeance.

They weren't
real public fighters,

At least around us.

They would bicker about
how sue had to work

To pay off
the debt of her credit card.

Dennis was a very
generous person,

But you have to draw
the line somewhere.

Soberanes: There always comes
a point where you're just like,

"I'm done with just handing
over money,

You know, I'm not just
the bank."

I'm assuming it was hurtful
to dennis,

But he was not a real sharer.

So, you know,
he was a manly man.

He didn't talk about feelings
or anything like that.

Narrator: On Friday,
October 21, 2011,

Susan leaves the house
to run errands.

Most every Friday, mom
was over at the car dealer

Getting her car detailed
or cleaned or whatever.

So I went ahead and I gave mom
a call,

She picked up the phone,

And it just so happened
to be, "hey, how's it going?

Are you okay?"
"yeah, I'm fine."

Narrator: As is their routine,

24 hours later,
amy checks in again.

So I called
Saturday afternoon.

No answer,
went to voicemail.

I said, "you must be out
gallivanting, having fun."

Narrator: The weekend passes,
and no one hears from susan

Or dennis.

And then Monday morning
rolls around.

So I get to work at 8:00.

Susan's supposed to be there
at 8:00.

Susan always called me
or texted me -- always.

I never did not hear from her

If she was
gonna be running late,

Later than usual.

So I called the sheriff because
they're out in the county.

And they said they would do
a wellness check.

It's a fairly common call
that we get

When family, friends
can't get a hold of somebody.

So patrol deputy responded
to the residents.

Both the vehicles were parked
under the carport.

Knocked on the door...

Police.

...And nobody answered.

I got a call
from a detective.

They said, "well, someone
went out there,

But no one
was answering the door."

And I said, "there's --
that's not right.

Something's wrong.
You need to check again."

From my understanding,
she was fairly assertive

That we need to go back
and double check.

Soberanes: And he said, "do you
take responsibility

If we knock this door down?"

I said, "I will take all
the responsibility in the world.

Something's wrong.
You need to get in there."

Snyder: They start walking
around the residence.

Fairly rural setting, the house
is set up on a hillside.

Get to the side of the house,
and there's a blue tarp.

Turner: It was clearly
laying over something.

Each corner of the tarp

Had big rocks
about this size at each end.

They backed out,

And now they know they're
gonna have a crime scene.

Vandehey: And then the first
indication that something

Was not good was that

They said they found
a body outside,

And they didn't tell us
who it was.

Narrator: This is just
the beginning of the horror

That is unfolding at dennis
and susan's dream house.

Turner: At this point,
they don't know

What they're gonna find
in the house.

Snyder: They knew that dennis
and susan lived there together,

And so you don't know
if it's a murder-suicide thing.

Narrator: October 24, 2011,
marks the second full day

No one has been able to reach
dennis and susan goins.

And when police check in
on the couple,

A shocking discovery
is made.

Turner: When they removed one
of the rocks

To lift back the tarp,

They found the body

Of who they later determined
was susan goins.

Susan was shot once
with a shotgun to the head.

Half of her face
was removed as a result.

She was found face down.

Narrator: Susan goins is dead,

And there is no sign
of her husband, dennis.

As law enforcement, we see
a lot of unimaginable things,

And so we're we're trying
to be prepared for everything.

The mere fact that you have this
deceased female under a tarp,

Rocks were placed on it
to hold it down,

The thinking is that someone
was trying to conceal

This dead body.

That's a "what are you
gonna do" moment.

Did the husband kill her?

Narrator: Police react
to the scene quickly,

Taking cover and calling
in the s.W.A.T. Team.

Unit 1 in position.

The concern is the unknown.

Is he inside the house
waiting for law enforcement

To come in and ambush them?

I've responded to domestic
violence calls and been ambushed

By a guy with a shotgun before,

So I know that domestic violence
situations can be very volatile.

They're looking for people and
anything that can be a danger

To investigators that are gonna
come in behind them

And process the crime scene.

Narrator: After clearing
the main floor,

The team heads down
to the lower level.

That's when the search
for dennis comes to an end.

They find dennis goins
shot multiple times.

Dead.

With his sunglasses still on.

And blood spatter
all over his glasses.

There were no weapons loose
anywhere.

They knew
it was a double homicide.

It wasn't a suicide --
murder-suicide situation.

It never crossed my mind

That dennis
would ever hurt susan.

That didn't even
enter my mind.

It wasn't even a thought.

Narrator: With a double murder
on their hands,

Detectives methodically
worked their way

Through the crime scene.

He was found 10 to 12 feet
approximately from the safe.

They found ammunition, guns,
credit cards.

They found a receipt
to a handgun.

No cash was located.

And a holster that would match,

But no handgun.

Snyder: It was definitely
an option in our minds

That somebody was here
to commit robbery.

Narrator: Officers quickly
determine

That the missing handgun
is not the murder weapon.

The pellets from susan were
of this similar make

And manufacturers
the pellets that were

From the body of dennis goins.

And so at that point, we knew
that a 20-gauge shotgun

Was one of the guns
that was used.

Turner: We believe that they
were murdered

In either late afternoon

Or early evening
of Friday, October 21st.

People had heard from susan
on Friday.

They had not heard from her
after Friday afternoon.

Turner: She came home.

Was ambushed and was running
for her life when she was shot.

[ gunshot ]

We believe that dennis goins was
forced to go into the basement

And forced to open the gun safe
to get money.

Narrator: But it's impossible
for investigators to tell

Who was murdered first.

Susan or dennis?

Snyder: Definitely
from the onset,

It seemed to us
like this was a personal thing.

It wasn't a random killing.

It was somebody that knew them.

He had to know that
there is even a house there.

Narrator: The heartbreaking news
of the couple's demise

Travels fast.

8:28 p.M.

[ sniffles ]

That's when I found out
that my mom died.

My daughter was on my hip.

I fell to the ground.

My daughter was caught
by my ex-husband.

Have you ever experienced
that silent scream?

[ voice breaking ]
October 24, 2011.

Sorry.

I mean, you kind of think
at the back of your head

Something's wrong,

But I was just hoping
they were hurt.

But yeah, that was tough.

Miss that son of a bitch.

[ sniffles ]

That was no way to go.

Narrator: After speaking
with the couple's friends,

Detectives learned about
the contentious relationship

Between dennis
and his brother gary.

That's when I started
getting the backstory

About gary goins.

Gary goins had threatened
to kill them before

Over money.

We knew he had been
to the house before,

So he knew where this safe was.

Hey, bro. Did you get
a chance

To look at that information
I gave you?

They realize now
that gary goins,

Dennis goins' brother,
is a potential suspect.

Narrator: Gary goins is located
near his home

In pollock pines, california,

Six hours from dennis' home
in grants pass.

He was actually taken into
custody by the sheriff's office

Down in el dorado county
in california

To be interviewed.

Sorry to keep you waiting.
We had quite a drive.

Yeah, yeah.

Yeah.
We came from oregon.

Oregon?
Yeah.

That's where my mom
and my brother

And my sister-in-law live.

Yeah.
Grants pass.

He looked like
an average guy.

Didn't look nervous
at all.

Okay.

I hate to be
the bearer of bad news,

But you mentioned
that you had some family

Up in grants pass area.

Your brother and sister-in-law
were found murdered

On Monday.

So I'm very sorry
for that news.

They were found murdered
Sunday or Monday?

Monday, Sunday?
Monday.

Is this a joke?

No, sir.

No, sir.

And we did want
to talk to you.

I understand --
where did this happen?

We don't know.

Where did it happen?
How did it happen?

We don't know.
Come on.

We don't know.
It happened out there.

We believe it happened
at the residence,

But we're not sure
at this point.

Okay?

Snyder: He acted dumbfounded.
He never cried.

He didn't show
any emotion.

We told him
it looked like a murder.

And we asked him
where he had been lately.

And he said, "well, I wasn't
around there last weekend.

I was at a friend's house."

Narrator: Gary tells police
his friend raymond

Lives in the bay area,

Also six hours
from grants pass.

Yeah.
Thursday night, Friday night?

Saturday night?
Yeah.

And he not only said
I was at his alibi's home,

He also talked about things
they did that weekend

And that he'd been there Friday,
which would have been an alibi

For the murder
because we know they were alive

Friday morning
and Friday early afternoon.

Narrator: Gary swears he knows
nothing about the murders,

And the interrogation
comes to a conclusion.

He acted nothing
like a homicide suspect.

He was pretty cool
and calm most of the time.

Any questions or anything
you want to ask us?

No.

Just find out who did this.

Make sure my mom's okay.
Alright.

Narrator:
Once the camera is off.

Gary has one thing
he decides to add.

Gary goins pointed the finger
towards aubrey.

Gary had said that aubrey
wanted to kill them for money.

Narrator: The accusation comes
as a surprise to detectives.

How could a daughter murder
her own father?

It's rare, but not out
of the question.

Dennis goins and susan goins

Did not have a will.

Place looks nice.

So the next of kin
would be children.

That would be
the recipients

Of any of the assets
of their estate.

Narrator: But could there be
a reason

That goes beyond
an inheritance?

I don't get a whole lot
of cases

That have this much forethought
in the planning and execution --

Literally.

It's more than
the family dynamics.

It's just different.

Man: Your brother
and sister-in-law

Were found murdered.

You know anybody that might
have wanted to hurt them?

Narrator: While gary goins
is questioned about the murder

Of his brother dennis
and sister-in-law susan,

He points the finger
at his niece aubrey.

The 30-year-old
is the sole inheritor

Of her father's estate.

She ended up getting everything
that was dennis goins'.

Narrator: Detectives track down
aubrey and bring her in.

One theory gary had was
that aubrey was on drugs

And wanted money.

Beach: One of dennis'
greatest fears was that aubrey

Would inherit that money

Because he knew
she wouldn't handle it

In the way he had hoped.

Tell me about your relationship
with your dad.

Aubrey: It's fine.

Normal.

Did you get along
with susan?

Kind of.

Where were you
on Friday the 21st?

I was at home.

Can anyone verify that?

Narrator: Aubrey's alibi
places her in the bay area,

Six hours away, at the time
of the double murder,

And there is no evidence
to suggest she is lying.

That means someone else is.

So when we interviewed
gary goins, we asked him

Where he was over that weekend

After he had said
he'd been out of town

At a friend's house
named raymond.

From Thursday morning
till late Sunday night,

I was in the bay area.

Raymond lived in
the redwood city area.

Grants pass, it's about
a six-hour,

Six-and-a-half hour drive.

We met with raymond
at that point.

We're letting him know
that he was gary's alibi

And we needed to know
when gary showed up.

Our point of emphasis
was, "when did he arrive?"

Was there enough time for him
to commit these murders

And drive down there?

Raymond was adamant
that gary showed up

Saturday mid-morning.

Narrator: Gary told police
he was at raymond's house

Thursday through Sunday.

If he did in fact arrive
Saturday morning,

Gary had plenty of time
to commit the murders.

Was he acting
any different?

I explained to raymond
that it'd be beneficial to us

To look at his residence
and see if gary had left

Anything behind that
could help us out.

I asked raymond
where gary slept,

And he said he slept
on the futon in the living room.

So, doing my due diligence,
I lifted up the mattress

On the futon,

And down on the floor
under the mattress is a shotgun.

This shotgun is
a 20-gauge shotgun,

And we know we're looking
for a 20-gauge shotgun

That was used to kill
dennis and susan.

Raymond was upset,
feeling like gary

Was trying to pin
this murder onto him.

His best guess was that
when he went to bed,

Gary brought it in the house
and stashed it under the futon.

Narrator: Police subpoena
gary's bank records

And search his home.

There, they find evidence
that he had recently

Come into a large sum
of money.

Between the cash that had been
deposited in his account

And the cash seized
from his home,

It was just a little
under $12,000.

Narrator: Detectives can't prove
where the cash came from,

But their luck isn't all bad.

Turner: Gary goins' friend
finds on a top shelf

Of his shed,
pushed away in the back,

A shirt that is folded up,

And in the shirt
is a firearm.

He's concerned
because it's not his firearm.

So he calls the police.

This firearm
that's recovered

Is that same firearm

That was stolen
from the gun safe

Of dennis goins.

And the shirt
is subsequently analyzed,

And it has the dna
of gary goins on it.

Narrator: Gary goins
is arrested for the murder

Of his brother
and sister-in-law,

And on may 19, 2015
he is found guilty

And sentenced to life
in prison without parole.

[ voice breaking ] gary goins is
the monster that haunts me.

He's not a nice man.

He is the devil
reincarnated.

He just -- he's a psychopath.

Vandehey: It's hard to see

That there's dead souls
out there,

And gary's a dead soul.

Soberanes:
I think that gary thought

With dennis out of the picture,

He could get to dorothy easier
and get her money.

Not necessarily
dennis' money,

But knowing that dennis
had cash in his safe,

There is quick money
right there.

Vandehey: You know,
thinking about why he had

To kill both of them,

We can't think logic
with someone like gary.

But in his mind,

I'm assuming
if he killed them both,

Then there'd be no witness.

Snyder: To kill a family member
is one thing,

But did kill
a family member for money,

It doesn't make any sense.
