Race for the Championship (2022–…): Season 1, Episode 5 - Hometown Glory - full transcript

hello?

Hello.

where are you?

finishing my job.

oh!

the final piece is here!

are you ready?
are you ready

do you want to
close your eyes?

ta-da!

oh, how pretty.

do you love it?
yeah.

oh, look at that.
something actually worked.

looks pretty in here, mama.
nice job.

kyle and i went through
our infertility journey

for almost 10 years.

I'm not going to lie.
i'm panicking.
why?

i don't know.
i'm nervous.

having a gestational carrier...
for someone who is willing

to do that for a family,
it's amazing.

it takes an amazing
and special woman to do that.

and also, on my side, it was
sometimes a little bit hard

because i wanted to have
all the feels,

you know, like, the kicking
and all of that.

i'm just praying.

like, nothing has gone
how we planned in this journey.

and i just want
to deliver her.

like, i just want to be
the one who does it.

you're going to be the one
that gets to do it.

it's going to
be awesome.

like,
i feel like i just,

like,
already let her down

by not being able to
be there for her.

you haven't let her down.

you've given her life.

baby lennix.
baby mama.

when you say her name,
it makes it so much more real.

let's go.

all right.
i need to go get some shoes on.

All right.
happy trackhouse tuesday.

appreciate that.

and i'm going to tell
a little story.

so on friday, darian and tony
and i went to l.a.

and we took a tour of spacex,
and we took a lot away from it.

one of the guys giving us a tour
was the 13th employee of spacex,

and he told us that spacex gets
500,000 job applications a year.

when you work for a company
like that, people ask you,

"what do you do for a living?"
"well, i'm working for a company

that's going to send humans
to mars.

like, we're literally
going to save the human race."

and the thing is, if you
pull that down and look at that

on the scale of like 1/100
or 1% of that, in a way,

it's kind of what we're doing
at trackhouse in our industry,

right, is that we are going
to change this sport.

we're going to put ourselves in
the history books of this sport.

it's not just about
what we're doing.

it's about who we are
and how we treat each other

and how we put the brand first

and put trackhouse first
and what trackhouse stands for.

that's ambition,
that's passion,

it's pride in what we do.

and it's feeling like what we're
doing is important

and we're changing the world.

whoo!

thanks, everybody.

the big crowd here at cota.

not a single person has left.

they are now climbing
to their feet.

we're going to have
only two laps to go.

green flag is back out.

ross chastain looking for
career win number one.

he's up against the bumper
of tyler reddick.

reddick side by side.
chastain takes the lead back.

power move.
strong move.

When i got the 1 car
for trackhouse,

trackhouse had to win
in a certain amount of time,

and justin was honest
with us about that.

This could be the
spot allmendinger could pounce.

he's going to move him!
just now.

he gets into the fender
just a little bit.

he moves chastain
to the outside!

it's a dead heat
under the bridge.

For trackhouse to be
a powerhouse,

it was going to take early wins,

and cota was
the ultimate day.

Chastain,
will he answer?

he is!

and ross chastain beats
and bangs his way

to the checkered flag.

the 29-year-old watermelon
farmer from alva, florida,

has his first career win
in the nascar cup series.

I'm viewed as
aggressive, and i'm viewed as

that i don't care.

what got me here
was being aggressive.

29 times
this race has been decided

by a last-lap pass.

kyle larson, big push.

does he go to the outside?

he's gonna have to.
here he goes!

and he's in the wall.

opens the door up
for the 1 of ross chastain!

steaming to the line,
ross chastain will win!

ross chastain has picked up

his second career
nascar cup series win.

trackhouse was unproven.

that win was ultimately
what's going to set up

trackhouse for years to come.

oh, god.
thank you so much.

i don't even want to
leave here.

oh!
oh, my gosh.

i think that ross chastain
is still viewed as an underdog.

in the 2022 season,
he's become a first-tier driver.

i think that's what's taken him
from being

a watermelon farmer on the rise
to nascar star on the rise.

our goal was to get
a semi load to the acre.

or a little plus.

plus that's 45,000
to 50,000 pounds per acre.

ross chastain has had a very
nontraditional path

for success in nascar.

he's an eighth-generation
watermelon farmer,

grew up in a small town
in florida.

i was a fan of the sport
before i raced,

and most drivers
were fans of racing

before they ever
got behind the wheel.

their families
sometimes were involved.

mine wasn't as much.

everybody's family farmed
at some point,

and we were just crazy enough
and lucky enough

to be able
to stay in agriculture.

and it was in the family
long before any of us.

back eight generations ago
for chad and i.

and he's seventh and sixth.
and it's just what we've done.

I think his story
resonates with fans because,

for a lot of folks,

that's something
that they can relate to.

this is me. i'm a short-sleeve,
plaid, button-up-shirt-wearing,

blue-jean,
and round-toed-boot guy.

and now i'm a nascar cup
series driver.

He is in the fields
during the week

and in a race car
on the weekends.

and that's something
that bridges the gap

from that garage
to the grandstand.

and very few folks can say that.

you don't have to be different

than anybody else
to be a racecar driver.

you just need to be good
at driving cars.

it's finally here.

stock-car racing's
all-star night.

the nascar all-star race
at texas motor speedway.

24 drivers ready to go.

$1.1 million goes to the winner.
of tonight's all-star race.

nascar's all-star race.
no points. rules are different.

anything goes.
it's wild. it's unpredictable.

no points tonight.

just a lot of cash.
let's go get it.

all-star event.
let's do it.

stay in it all night.
be there for the million.

green flag is in the air,

and the 2022 nascar cup series
all-star race is underway.

the prestige of getting in the
all-star race is important,

and i've been fortunate enough
in my two years

in quality equipment
to make it in.

boy, how about this?

off 4, wheel-to-wheel,
chastain and kyle busch.

at the line,
a dead heat.

the all-star race,
it's one of the fastest tracks.

A podium finish

is like a slap in the face
to kyle busch.

he wants to win.

he's also racing,

trying to get another sponsor
on board that racecar.

he'll take the lead.
chastain loses the nose.

here comes cindric.

i got a flat.
right rear flat.

right rear flat.
coming hard.

We've got trouble
on the main straightaway.

kyle busch is caught
down a tire.

and a big crash
down in turn number 1!

ross chastain hammers in
from behind.

the car goes airborne,
nearly upside down.

i saw him slow down.

i saw the 2 car peel left
and go underneath him.

i was just trying to keep
going farther left,

and time i realized
it was going to make contact,

it was way too late.

A scary crash.

something went
on the kyle busch machine.

he virtually stopped in the
middle of the racing group.

ross chastain
with nowhere to go.

I made a decision to
go low on kyle

when he had the tire go down,

and i thought, "this is 100%
the right decision."

and as i got closer to him,

i realized it was
50%, 30%, 0% chance

this was the right decision.

What a wreck.

i froze a bit,
and i never changed from that

until right before
the point of impact.

what a change of events.

just like that.

those cars are junk.

you all right, buddy?

yes.
i'm good.

for me, most of my career,

it's all been about checkered
flags and fastest lap time.

i get to the track and i leave,
and that's it.

with trackhouse, it's bigger.

let's jump
into texas here.

and since you're the 1,
you can start it off.

yeah.

i got to the restart zone,
and i was like,

"all right, the 2's going low.
i'll just follow him."

and i made it clear.
like, i moved down way early.

and then by the time i got the
start/finish line, i was like,

"oh.... ."

to be the best,

you have to make minimal amount
of mistakes.

it's always your livelihood
that you could be out.

mess up,
you do the wrong things,

it's easy to give somebody
a good reason

to not let you drive
this racecar for a living.

i think he just was trying to
shut it down super quick

to minimize damage,
tire not coming apart

or trying to get back
to pit road.

we are all very fortunate
to work in this sport.

i have my dream job
that i've always wanted.

how i got here, i don't know.

how i've been able
to stay here now, i don't know.

i think kyle just slammed
on the brakes and tried

to move out of the way,
and you were pot committed.

i was to trying to
do the right thing, but...

i want to do everything i can

to be the best racecar driver
i can be.

so what's at stake?

Hello, everybody,
from the queen city,

charlotte, north carolina,
the home of nascar

and the scene of this week's
race, the coca-cola 600.

coca-cola 600
is one of those races

that every driver wants to win.

it's considered one
of nascar's crown jewels.

the coca-cola 600, i think,
has been a real coming-out party

for some of the biggest names
in nascar history.

jeff gordon, first career win
came at the coca-cola 600.

and, you know,
the emotional victory lane.

he's got tears in his eyes.

dale earnhardt, 1993,

spin a guy out
to get back on the lead lap.

Oh!
greg sacks getting tagged.

Got penalized.

got back on the lead lap again,
then goes on to win this race.

Charlotte, north carolina
is the home base of nascar.

this is a hometown race
for all of these teams.

they're based
in the charlotte area.

To win here is to win
in front of everybody.

everybody at the shop.

all your friends,
all your family.

There's no other race
like this on the schedule.

this is a hell of a week, man.

ohh!

come here.
i know it's bright.

it's time
to meet your brother.

are you ready?

i know it's a bright,
sunny day for you, girlfriend.

bright, sunny day
with nice, pretty sign.

you ready?

brexton.

congratulations,
big brother.

is she awake?

she doesn't really
wake up very much.

lennix.

lennix.

can i try to hold her?

of course
you can hold her.

she's real little, so we just
got to watch her neck, okay?

go.

perfect. look at you.
you're like a natural.

guess we can go out
on a date night, mom.

we have a babysitter.

we have a sitter!

she's going to learn your voice
and her name and your name.

look at all of her hair.

is she going to say
brexton first

or is she going to say dada
or mama?

you don't know?

is she going to be
a racecar driver?

yes!
you think so?

yes. i hope so.
oh, i can't afford
two of them.

i hope so.

it just doesn't
really feel real.

this is everything
we've talked about for so long.

yeah.
and now it's all here.

now she's here.

So kyle busch has
two families.

he has his family...
samantha, brexton, lennix.

kyle as a dad... a-plus.

would he give that same grade
to his jgr family?

probably not.

Kyle busch enters
the coca-cola 600 race week

without a contract
for the 2023 season.

Do you have any sort
of time frame

for when you want your plans
to be decided for next year?

yesterday.

you're getting antsy
about it?

i'm not getting antsy
about it.

if it happens, it happens.
if it don't, it don't. goodbye.

It's hard to think of kyle
anywhere else besides

joe gibbs racing just because

of the success
he's had while he's been there.

This guy, he is
a winner, plain and simple.

kyle busch has been there
since 2008.

he's an institution
at joe gibbs racing.

kyle busch out front!

no one has
battled through as much pain

and had as much perseverance
as 30-year-old kyle busch.

kyle busch, the 2015 nascar
sprint cup champion!

Once kyle got to joe gibbs
racing, something clicked.

he became a championship driver.

Kyle busch,
he's the winningest driver

of the decade, and now
he is joining elite company.

kyle busch
is going to win his second

nascar cup series championship.

no, there's not news on his
contract at joe gibbs racing.

why?
he has to have a sponsor.

you know,
with m&m's mars leaving,

the news
is all about the sponsor.

if jgr doesn't sign
a high-dollar sponsor,

they cannot afford
to keep kyle busch.

sponsorship is everything
in nascar, and kyle's lifeline

at joe gibbs racing
has been mars

and their investment
in kyle and his career.

Ever since kyle's been
with jgr, he's had mars m&m's.

that is one thing
that you can associate

with kyle busch
in the cup series.

now the uncertainty is,
well, what's next?

they're gone.

Let's go, boys.

welcome, everybody.
thank you. thanks for coming.

appreciate you being here.
let's get started.

With what kyle
had going on at home,

that provided him balance

to what was a very intense
professional atmosphere

his mind,
when he walks into the garage,

is to get that racecar
running as best it can,

as fast as it can,
and win races.

good luck on sunday.

thanks.
i hope so

about time for another coke win
this weekend.

and now you throw
a contract negotiation

and extension in the mix,

it's a total distraction.

you're the
greatest driver ever.
thank you.

appreciate that.
i try.

with not having a contract, how
does that play in the next year?

i mean, it's tough, you know,
but it's reality.

it is what it is.

which one's
your favorite?

if i can go on
and sign a deal

and have some peace of mind,
that would be great.

but have i made enough money
in my lifetime in our sport,

where if nothing happens,
am i okay just to walk away?

yeah, i am.

all right.
good to see you guys. thanks.

14 races
into the 2022 season,

i think nascar is pleased
as punch about the way

that the next-gen car

has transformed the landscape
in the cup series...

not just the fact that the car
is producing good racing,

but that it's changed the game
in terms of the players

we're seeing at the front,

trackhouse racing
being a great example that.

we felt like now that
the new car was here,

that this was the opportunity
to push the button,

we felt like we could win.

so we came into this season,

we had two drivers who had never
won a race,

never made the playoffs,

never finished better
than 20th in points.

I wanted two guys
that had never won.

i wanted two guys
that were hungry and were ready

to prove to the world
that they belong.

and i've got that
in daniel and ross.

Daniel suárez was there at
the ground level for trackhouse

when they came into nascar
the year before.

Trackhouse was formed
around suárez a year ago.

then they decided to add
a second car,

and they bring in ross.

i could not be more proud
of how ross and daniel

have bought into
the trackhouse vision.

daniel has grown, in two years,

to not be a driver
of trackhouse

but a leader
of the trackhouse narrative.

when i look at daniel suárez's
history in the cup series

and i look at the opportunities
that he's had...

joe gibbs racing,
stewart-haas racing...

those are definitely
playoff-caliber teams.

and you look at that
and you wonder,

how come this guy didn't win?

he's got talent.
he has the ability.

he's a former series champion
in the xfinity series.

but yet he's not been able
to escalate himself

to break through
that glass ceiling,

to go to the next level.

He's had fast cars,

but he just seems to not be able
to shake the bad luck.

it's one thing after another
after another.

there's been times this year
that we didn't fully execute.

we just have to get him
in better positions.

we need daniel to be rewarded
for all of his hard work.

this is the best version
of daniel suárez has ever been.

i'm from monterrey, mexico.

i would say that
every single driver,

if they want to go visit family,

they drive 30 minutes,
one hour, couple hours.

i'm the only driver that has
to go to a different country

to actually say hello
to my mom or dad.

my family never been
all together in a cup race.

my family being here
means the world to me.

having my mom and my dad
and my sisters

keeps me more calm.

they distract me
a lot of racing.

and to get your mind out
of that world for a little bit,

sometimes it's good.

and my father had to do
a lot of sacrifices for me.

he sold his business.
he put a lot of debt on himself.

he just had to make
a lot of sacrifices

that 90% of the parents
out there

i don't think
they would have done

what my father did.

my father loves racing.
he loves cars.

maybe he's not here
every single day,

but we talk every single day.

i have amazing family,
that they are healthy.

they love me.

my only thing...
and i know it's common...

is win racing championships

and that one is up to me.

since it's going to be
a really late race,

if dad wins, do you want us

to wake you up
really, really late

or wait
till the morning?

and do what?

remember how we used to dump
confetti in your room?

you want us
to do that again?

dump it on my face
in the middle of the night.

in the middle of the night?
okay.

feeding time.

you want to do it?
i'll bring her to you, baby.

okay.
that's good.

are you going to watch
daddy and uncle kurt on tv?

mm-hmm.
yeah?

can i take her
for a sec?

all right, you ready, bud?
give me a hug.

i got to go.

see you later, okay?

hey, girl.
see you in a little bit, okay?

yeah?
you going to hang with mimi?

yeah.

hey. here.

bye, baby.

see you later.

cheer us on.
scream loud.

it's what i'm wearing
to the tailgate.

okay.

got your hard card?

yeah.
all right.

how you feel
about your car?

um, i don't know.

i mean,
it's only a 20-minute practice

and you only get about 12 laps,
so it's hard to tell,

but it's going to come down
to execution on the whole day,

being there at the end
of 600 miles.

it's a long day.

it is
going to be a long day.

We're here
at the charlotte motor speedway

drawing ever closer
to the green flag

in the coca-cola 600.

nascar playing to
a full-capacity open house,

celebrating
this holiday weekend.

we've had 11 different winners
in the first 14 events,

and the fans are excited about
which driver will finish first.

gonna smash
a watermelon today.

the coca-cola 600.

when i looked up the history
of the sport, it stands out.

i want to win.

it doesn't matter
what, when, where.

i just want to win.

how come you guys have been
doing so good this year

compared to other teams?

we work hard.

for me, i see it as just another
race and another opportunity.

the 99
just keeps getting stronger.

Contract or no contract,
i go out to race for the win.

i give everything i got
every single time

i'm on the race track,
it doesn't matter,

and i feel like coach gibbs
always tells me,

like, "thanks for the fight.

gotcha.

you're putting it
all out on the line

and trying to make results.

you want to win.

we'll reconvene this week
and figure a time to talk.

the biggest thing
about strapping into the car
for the coke 600 is,

how well did you hydrate
all week long?

did you eat well?
are you feeling good?

are you all ready to go for this
longest race of the year?

drivers, start your engines!

all right.
fire in the hole.

have a good day, man.

score some points here.
try to battle for this win.

the coca-cola 600
is the longest race

on the nascar cup series
schedule.

600 miles.

and it also moves
from day into night.

it is such a long race
that it takes a mental toll

on you, for sure.

400 laps, you think about
that added stage.

there's a lot of fatigue
that sets in.

you're just trying to focus
for four-plus hours.

you get halfway
in that race, you're like,

"oh, my gosh,
we're only halfway."

by about mile marker 450, 500,

you're like falling out
of the seat,

like, "man, i am tired,

and i still got
another hundred miles to go."

you want to win the 600,
you first got to finish the 600.

For the 63rd time,

we're about to contest
the coca-cola 600

at the charlotte motor speedway.

ready, ready. go, go.
green.

the coca-cola 600 is underway.

the coca-cola 600 is underway.

first opportunity to see
this new-generation racecar

on the high banks
of charlotte motor speedway.

the biggest thing about
the coke 600

is the factors
in which you race under.

new leader off 4.

kyle busch
is out in front of denny hamlin.

kyle busch started fourth.

it took him nine laps
to get to the front.

You start in the day,
and then you go through

the transition in the dark.

the racetrack goes through
a lot of change.

Daniel suárez
in chase of the leader

and gaining ground
on kyle busch.

i feel like we had,
in my opinion,

the fastest car out there.

suárez very impressive.
bottom of the racetrack.

a battle for the lead is on
off 4.

daniel suárez takes the low line
on the exit of 4.

and i've always told myself,
"do not race in the day."

daniel suárez tries to root
underneath kyle busch.

the track's going to change.
just let everything come to you.

Let's call it
a dead heat now as they go to 1.

i did not do that.

Suárez with
the slight advantage.

taking kyle busch to the top!

kyle busch is holding tough
on the outside.

oh, he's loose!

busch is gonna spin!

the right front pops!

just keep her straight here.

lock it down.

and the crowd goes wild

when they see 18 go around.

he was trying to hang with you.
he couldn't do it.

he's going to have
flats here, guys.

right sides are flat.
left rear's flat.

put the scuffs on it.
change tires, change tires.

put the scuffs on it.

kyle busch with a long stop.

we already lost one lap,
so whatever you got to get done

here on this one.

will go a lap down,

but he'll be the only car
one lap down.

the biggest thing that happened
when i spun was

it ended up bending
or breaking the carbon splitter.

green flag's back out.

on the outside,
suárez with a big jump.

he'll lead the pack.

it got to a point where it was
loose and tight,

so now it's just evil.

these cars suck!
they are so bad!

this is a... joke!
- joke!

suárez is is having a tough time
with his car right now,

and he's losing spots.

10-4,
we're looking pictures,

trying to understand
what happened.

Daniel suárez
has dropped to 17.

i gotcha.
just hang on.

we'll get you fixed up.

chase elliott wins stage number
one in the coca-cola 600.

10-4, man. we'll these tires.
we're gonna check them out.

so, hey,

i didn't know... after the stop,
he said something to me

about them being pumped up.

so i don't...
just check the air.

it's on me.
i... it up.

hey.
it's good.

next time, tell me
you don't have them set

and we'll
put stickers on.

that's no big deal.
sorry.

all right?
it's a long race.

don't do it again.
i... it up.

Daniel suárez
has fallen back to 24th.

all right, bud.
it's on us there.

right rear pressure
is set a little high there.

couple pounds too high
on the right rear.

we're gonna get you
fixed up here.

car is still really good.

we got ahead of the track
right here.

good work, man.

The green flag out,
stage number two is underway.

you say ross chastain being
very aggressive in the 1...

that's the only
ross chastain i know.

now we've got to fight
for the lead off turn 2.

ross chastain,
your new leader.

no. no. we don't see
any problems with them.

we were super, super,
super tight.

car would not turn.

The car was a rocket.

it seems to me that it didn't
matter what we were doing,

what kind of mistakes
we were having,

i was coming from the back
to the front,

from the back to the front
several times.

trackhouse racing cars,

now the twosome battling
for the lead.

daniel suárez has drawn even
with ross chastain off turn 2.

when you have a car like that,

it's going to be up to us
to win this race.

That 99 car sure
wants to get back in front.

ross chastain, his teammate,
trying to hold him off.

but suárez has got the advantage

down on the bottom
of the racetrack.

can he make it stick off 4?

he's right there.
it's up to us either to take it

or to take it and throw it
in the window.

Daniel suárez racing
with his teammate.

out of 4, they're side by side.

they almost touch.
across the stripe.

advantage goes to chastain.

back it down,
back it down.

spinning on the bottom.
they're piling in.

keep backing it down.
they're coming up to the fence.

ryan blaney's car will hit
the outside wall

and collect a half dozen others

right in the middle
of the banking of turn 2.

stay up on the fence.
they're coming down the hill.

go head around up top.

chastain and suárez
on the restart,

and they both want the lead.

i race aggressive
with everybody.

when it comes to a teammate,

i've put in the effort this year
to race daniel differently

than i do other people

and to back that aggression
down and to give him more room.

still there.
even. on you tight.

i gave him air on the restart

so his car would handle better
and be able to stay closer

to my left rear,
and he passed me.

i didn't really plan
on that happening.

Suárez is out front
with three laps to go

in stage number two.

and then as soon as he got
in front of me, i had no air.

wherever the 1 car went,

the 99 stayed
right in front of it.

i don't understand why
he wants to race me so hard,

but not worry about
anybody else.

you know, that's racing.

he was doing things
that he forgot,

and then when i was doing
those things, he didn't like it.

i don't ever get mad
about that stuff,

but that's incredibly
over the line.

like, worry about
the other people.

it's part of racing.

him and i, we are good friends
off the track

and we are good competitors
inside the track.

it's the end of stage two here.
amazing job, man. nice drive.

Daniel suárez will
win stage number two.

teammate ross chastain
comes home in second.

trackhouse one-two
at halfway in the coca-cola 600.

coming to the restart zone
for stage three of four.

joey logano trying to hold off
the trackhouse duo

of daniel suárez
and ross chastain.

move the 99 to the front.

suárez leads,
teammate chastain behind him.

oh, these two guys
are putting on a show up front.

we're back in it here.
we'll have to pit here.

daniel suárez pretty happy
with his racecar.

they spent a lot of time,
though,

on the right side of the car.

daniel suárez has had a couple

of really underperforming
pit stops tonight,

and that has cost him
a lot of track position.

10-4.

the nut ratcheted,

but the wheel
was not pulled up straight.

so they had to jack it back up,
break the nut loose,

and tighten it back up.

we got it straightened out.
we're good.

we got a loose tire,
loose tire.

looking over the damage.

kyle busch still sitting
in the pit lane.

green flag's out.

ross chastain will lead them
back to 1.

and with problems on pit road,

chastain's teammate, suárez,
finds himself deep in the pack,

back at about the 15th position.

19 laps to go

in stage number three

of the coca-cola 600.

problems for kyle busch.

he slowed down
on the backstretch,

almost spun trying to
get onto pit road.

tire down?

yeah!

it has been a night
for kyle busch.

daniel suárez
just moved into fifth.

let's just ride here, maintain.
we're back in position.

we're doing good.

no pressure.

chastain is gonna cruise
to victory here in stage three.

listen,
you're the fastest car here.

you don't have to win it
during this restart.

you're gonna
run these guys down.

no problem.
i got it.

here we go for the fourth stage
of the coke 600.

93 laps remain
in nascar's longest race.

gonna be really tight.
you're really tight.

you're good. you're good.
come on. come on, come on.

ah, hang on.
hang on. hang on, hang on.

daniel suárez gets sideways!

then he gets clipped
by two other cars!

ah, we're done, boys.

and it's going to be
chris buescher's car

flipping in the infield grass,

as it barrel rolls a half
a dozen times before it finally.

comes to rest on its roof.

tremendous problems
along the frontstretch here

at charlotte motor speedway.

you all right?

and now you see chris buescher
moving around inside that car.

chris buescher is okay.

he climbs out
under his own power there.

crowd here at charlotte
gives him a standing ovation.

daniel suárez, he had
a great race going tonight.

i'm really proud of you,
dude.

i know that sucks. i know.
i know that sucks.

but, i mean,

we brought the best...
racecar to the coca-cola 600.

we're gonna win
races.

i know.
many of them.

you did good.
finish it off.

what's that, buddy?
finish it off.

i'll try, bud.
thank you.

After all this,
we're going to overtime

in the coca-cola 600.

two laps to glory here.

let's find out how this whole
thing is gonna go down.

they're on their feet.

they're waving everything
they have...

hats, towels, t-shirts.

the green flag is back out.

kyle larson gives ross chastain
racing room,

but larson will lead him
off turn 2.

here comes a big run
by that 3.

austin dillon
to the bottom of the racetrack.

3 car had tires,
he had a big run,

and he went for it.

Look out.
here it is.

he's there.

i was up top,
and all of a sudden

i was looking at his right door
as he plugged the fence.

Four wide.

oh, they wreck him!

unbelievable.

walk it down, walk it down.

there are seven cars
involved in that incident

coming off
turn number 4

with what would have been
the white flag.

we got nose damage.

the nose is torn up.

they were pushing me
to probably pit.

your tires still up?

but we had choice to start on
the front row,

and you have to try it.

1 should be struggling
once he gets to 1 here.

there was a big wreck
on the frontstretch.

somehow i made it
through the middle.

they were coming from
every which direction

and i was just driving through.

the seas parted for kyle busch,

and he shoots
the gap right through there.

we will line up and do it again.

oh, my gosh.

that just gave us
that opportunity

for that final restart
to try to go race for a win.

Our second overtime
is about to get underway.

denny hamlin will lead them
to the green flag.

kyle busch getting a push

from ricky stenhouse jr.
on the inside.

chastain at a real deficit,
and he knows it.

still lined up.
looking middle right here.

soon as we took off
in the restart zone,

i didn't have downforce.

i think i had upforce.
it was pulling me up.

and so i just hung a right
and got out of the way.

climbs the bank, and giving
everybody room behind him.

here comes kyle busch
to the outside.

he made a great move
to get beside us,

and i thought that he made
the race-winning move

by getting to the outside.

i just remember driving into
turn 1 side by side with him,

thinking that i was not
gonna lift.

It's a dead heat,
busch edges ahead.

but here comes hamlin,
battling back to the inside.

He slid up across my nose
in front of me,

same thing as suárez did.

and i knew if i stayed to his
outside and in the gas

that he would
just keep coming up

and i would end up in the wall.

power move by denny hamlin.

so i had to concede.
otherwise we'd both crash.

The longest
and one of the most exciting

coca-cola 600s ever.

denny hamlin, kyle busch...
teammates at joe gibbs racing.

and they come to the line.
hamlin wins by two car lengths.

you have the great finish

between joe gibbs racing
teammates

in denny hamlin, who has never
won the coca-cola 600;

and kyle busch, who had had
a pretty abysmal showing

up until the closing stages.

the fact that those two guys
were battling it out

toward the finish
shows you how you just

never know how these races
are going to end.

hey, is that awesome
or what?

lot of work there.

a second-place finish,
for a lot of drivers,

would be a great thing.
but with kyle busch,

the mantra has always been
"second sucks"

and especially
when it's to his teammate

at joe gibbs racing,
denny hamlin.

Coach gibbs to
celebrate with his crew.

we love you.
thank you for jesus. amen.

amen, baby!

In a contract year
that kyle busch is in,

he's racing every week,
basically kind of auditioning.

the best way to get what
you want from joe gibbs racing

or any team, for that matter,
is to go out and win races

and contend
for the championship.

denny did what he needed to do
to win, and we lost.

if you look at ross,
you lead a lot of laps,

you have an opportunity
to win a crown jewel race,

and then you leave
with a 15th-place finish.

ross's year,
while he's got two wins,

those aren't crown jewel races.

that's something that still
is missing from his résumé.

we didn't win this one.
it's fine.

we're going to go
and we have a chance.

let's just keep doing
what we're doing.

nothing changes.

really proud of you.
i know, man.

really, really proud of you.
thank you.

Daniel suárez climbed
from his car uninjured.

look at the damage to suárez.
that was just one hard hit.

daniel has to be frustrated.

they've had consistency
to a certain point,

but then something
always ends up going wrong.

i mean, you're talking
the ultimate disappointment...

to win a stage,
have speed in the car,

still looking
for your first win,

and then you finish 25th
has to be heartbreaking.

It was tough.

it wasn't easy
to swallow that one.

we made too many mistakes.

we are the ones
that decided to mess it up.

at this point of the season,
i think daniel's is at risk

from missing the playoffs.

daniel's got work to do.
that clock is ticking.

and he feels the pressure.

at this point in the season,

if you don't have a win,
you're sweating.

mistake after mistake
each weekend,

you might find yourself
out of the playoffs.

The big question mark
for daniel suárez is,

can he win in the cup series?

we have to keep pushing.

Chris buescher's
putting the pressure on.

and i'm preparing myself
for war.

Are you okay
with conceding

and finishing eighth, tenth,
miss the wrecks,

and ride around
and take a paycheck?

i'm not gonna do that.

might get fired.

wouldn't be the first time
i've been threatened
to be fired.

In this playoff format,
winning is everything.

the need to win right now
is getting pretty high,

and we're kind of sitting
in the danger zone.

Oh, the 12!
