Race for the Championship (2022–…): Season 1, Episode 3 - Old School Versus New School - full transcript

I know what some of my fans

have to go through and
endure on a given weekend

when they're sitting
in the grandstands

with a bunch of other race fans

that aren't
necessarily Kyle fans.

Few years ago... this guy I
knew he wasn't a fan of mine,

he was a hater...

He came to us at races sometimes

and kept asking me for sign...

For signing pictures
of my car wrecked.

Like he just loved me wrecking.

When people hear
the name Kyle Busch,

what do you think is the first
thing that comes to their mind?

Oh, y'all are so loving.

Kyle Busch driver
number 18 M&M's Toyota

for Joe Gibbs Racing.

People either love Kyle Busch.

Sup? Oh, my God!

Hey there, Grandma Susie.

It's Kyle Busch
here. What! Oh, my!

Now and then. Or they
love to hate Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch is an ass.

Kyle Busch is the
quintessential bad guy.

Unfortunately, you
race with idiots.

My pit crew did absolutely
nothing to help me out tonight.

I don't know what y'all
are whining about.

He's the perfect villain.

He can act the way he does,
because he backs it up.

Kyle Busch will win.

He may not yet be
the best of all time,

but he is the best of his time.

The only thing that he
wants to do is go out

and win races and
make people mad.

When people hear
the name Kyle Busch,

what is the first thing that
comes across their mind?

"Damn, he's one
hell of a talent."

"But I hate that guy."

Welcome to race
six of the 2022 NASCAR season.

It's the second
annual Grand Prix

at the Circuit of the Americas
here in Austin, Texas.

The first road course this
new next-gen car will face.

Are the teams ready
for the challenge?

COTA is a road course
that was built essentially

for Formula One cars.

It's a very technical racetrack,
and the thought of these

heavy stock cars
going around 21 turns.

A lot of drivers might not have
that place quite figured out.

It's narrow, very windy,
and then all of a sudden,

it's really fast.

There's more opportunity
to make a mistake.

How's it
going? - Hey, bud.

How are you? Got
time for a picture?

Yes, sir. He's
taller in person.

On TV, you look like a runt.

Yeah.
That's my face.

I think I look
like a little kid.

I'm Harrison Burton.

I drive the number 21 Ford,

for Wood Brothers Racing.

It's my first year
in the Cup Series,

and the hardest thing in racing

is to make a step
to a higher series.

And it's a sink or swim moment.

It's one of the hardest
sports to be a newcomer.

And the guys on the track
don't forget it either.

You've got a bright yellow
bumper for the entire season.

It's almost like when you
have a student driver sticker.

Saturday in
the Xfinity Series

to Sunday, the Cup
Series, is a huge jump.

I equated it to going
from the shallow

to the deep end of the pool.

I was told by a rookie,

"Nope, in the pool I
know which way to swim.

Cup racing is like getting
dropped in the ocean.

I don't even know
which way is shore."

The Burtons are
synonymous with NASCAR.

If you're a NASCAR fan, Burton
is a name you recognize.

Harrison comes from
a racing family.

His uncle is Ward Burton.

His cousin is Jeb Burton.

His dad is Jeff Burton.

He's got some shoes to fill.

I've won races at pretty much
every level I've been at.

He's gonna
have one chance.

He goes by Noah.

Harrison Burton's
gonna win in Texas!

What a move!

But this is a
whole nother level.

That one guy that used to
dominate Xfinity is everybody.

It's a bunch of killers in here.

2022 is a contract
year for Kyle Busch.

Any driver will tell you when
they're in a contract year,

they want to be performing
the best they can.

We haven't seen that
from Kyle Busch.

I was
bragging on Kyle Busch,

and then it just went away,
man... Oh! Is it gonna spin?

Speaking
of going away.

I don't think Kyle Busch
has been the Kyle Busch

that we expect, that
Hall of Fame driver

who's a threat to
win every time out.

Please go ahead and
roll.

Kyle Busch as he
spins out right here again

going over those curves
a little too aggressive.

It was bottoming out
worse. It bottomed out?

Yeah. Okay.

Bang's off the ground and
the tires are on the ground.

Nate! Let's undo that
last change in the back.

He's gonna make some adjustments
or be telling that crew chief,

"I need to get in
the corner harder."

Kyle Busch expects
to be the best.

The only thing he cares
about are results.

So it's like it's off on
grit down through the esses.

Okay.

And then Kyle Busch
had a lazy spin in the end

of the esses at turn 7.

And then it's Joey Hand having
major issues with the...

The first road course race
with the new generation car,

it is the EchoPark
Automotive Grand Prix.

You gotta add in
where I'm going.

I'm following these
other drivers.

That's my plan.

I guess so.

You think I need a
cowboy hat like that?

I got one.

I just pretty much stay in
the corner and look awkward.

Me too, yeah.

That's me every week.

Follow the herd.
Follow the herd.

I don't know where we're going.

We're going to intros.

Jump on it
for Harrison Burton!

How you doing, man?
Good to see ya.

Good luck, buddy. All right.

You're Kyle,
my husband's favorite!

Please, Kyle!

Kyle, come here!

Kyle!

Kyle!

All right, fellas. Here we go.

Surely struggle with the car.

I know the chains aren't ideal.

I know the stuff we have
in the car is not ideal.

You know, look, we'd love
to have been fastest.

I'd love the car
to drive perfect.

I love to be on the pole.

I'd love to lay down
on a bed of roses.

But... it's not happening.

There's a lot of things that we
could say we're going to suck,

but we're not gonna...
ing suck, so suck it up,

find a way.

Let's kick some... ing ass.

What do you got,
Chase? Deal with it.

I like it. Let's do it.

I'm good.

You know what I
am worried about?

Absolutely... ing
nothing. There you go.

The hell you
doing back here with me?

My slow ass? Sucking.

Well, I'll try to
follow your ass.

Just watch out
when I'm backwards.

Start your engines!

Green flag.

Back here at
Circuit of the Americas.

The cars are rolling.

Green flag.

They're door to door.

Four-wide midpack
as they head down

the hill into turn 2.

Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch
were leaning on each other.

Kyle Busch got to the
inside and Chase Elliott.

And you can tell Elliott's
not happy about it.

Look out on your left.

We got a
spinner, it's Kyle Busch...

Is around from
the 13th position.

Looks like that's turn 12.

He grabs the gear and
gets moving again.

That was my bad.
Locking up a rear.

Kyle Busch, losing
about 13 spots

because of that spin in turn 12.

He is now 27th.

Junk, junk, junk, junk.

Did I mention junk?

Copy on the junk.

I'm not feeling
good about the car.

It's not giving me
that warm and fuzzy.

You'll get better as
you go, better as you go.

My job is to do the
best I can with what I have.

With that, the
results will follow.

Chase Elliott's
had a pretty good car today.

They just
keep making that 9 car

better and better.

But everybody has one
more pit stop to go.

NASCAR pit crew is
football special teams.

Sit around for 35 minutes

and are expected to be
ready to do jobbing,

at nine and a half seconds
to do it and that's it.

Five, four, three, two.

The pits are open,
and they are busy.

Chase Elliott in. Announcer
#5: They asked him

to cheat to the right
about six inches

just to give jackman
enough time and space.

Trouble with their
pit stop here.

Chase Elliott
pitted from fourth place,

came out 11th.

You also have to understand
that they're human,

and they will make mistakes.

How many more
times this year am I

gonna get... on pit road
on the last... ing stop?

Yeah, I'm with you.

You kind of get past that shock

and then you go on damage
control right away.

And then what did you
do, like, peel it off

and re-index it or something?

I take it off about that much,

turned it, shoved it
again, it wouldn't move.

The car was on the
ground, that's my fault.

Are you sure? Yeah.

I guarantee it.

It's on me. It's good.

I mean, we're just trying
to talk through it here,

you know? Yeah.

It happens. We just gotta be
able to adjust to it or know,

you know? ... it.

Terrible... ing timing, it's
always... ing something.

God damn it.

God damn.

Chase
Elliott had the best

track position he
had had all day,

but when he came in to pit
the jackman on the right side

didn't get the car
jacked high enough

to hang that tire
on the right rear.

He went from
fourth to 11th on that stop.

You have to drive harder
than anything else

I've ever driven.

You have to be what feels
like the closest to crashing

to go fast, which is crazy.

These races are battles.

It's intense over here
in the back of the park.

Ross Chastain,
he just has not made a mistake.

The things that we were doing
were helping on the race car,

made our way up into the
fourth or fifth position

coming into the last lap

and was trying to make
a move on my teammate

who was in front of me...

Slammed into me, and I spun out.

I was furious.

I'd never been the
most aggressive guy,

but when you put that helmet on,

your job is to go to battle.

Like, oh, that's Kyle Busch?
I gotta go take the fight

to that guy.

Well, I'm gonna go race him,

and I'm gonna try and beat him.

Good job, man,
quite a fight all day.

Chastain
takes the lead back.

Here he comes.

Chastain, will he answer?

Gonna have to move them both.

Oh, oh! Announcer #2: He is!

He got moved and moved him back.

Ross Chastain is going to get

his first NASCAR Cup Series win.

Trackhouse
Racing, your new Cup winner.

Wow! What a finish.

They will replay the last lap

of this race till
the end of time.

Chase Elliott for...

Good rebound for Chase Elliott.

Good job.

I hate the pit stop,

and ultimately...
- Me, man.

I know it sucks, you
know. You deserve better.

Gotta just believe in the guys.

We just got to keep working
through it, you know?

Yeah.

You know, I hate to get
frustrated, but, like...

Oh, yeah, it's warranted.

I understand, I understand.

Good job. Really good
point to stay forward,

top 20 at a road course.

Good job, everybody.

He, like, merged across me,
and got, like, way slow,

and I just tapped him and he...

Let's celebrate it.

I was last car on the racetrack,
whatever that was... 28th.

Didn't even care at that point.

never forget.

Got a top-5 finish taken
away and go onto next week.

I'm almost done.

Almost done.

Always almost done.

Did you feed the fish? Yeah.

I can't believe
she's still kicking.

This is my longest
lasting fish.

From what I heard, that's
not much of a record.

Should I leave the
light on for it?

Yeah. Okay.

People always ask me that
at school, they're like,

"Oh, where does your
boyfriend go to school?"

I'm like... He works.

"He doesn't."

And they're like, "Oh." Kind
of a low-life.

Sometimes the weekends are
harder, and you come back,

and you're down on
yourself or, you know,

that something's not just right.

Yeah. I just get excited now.

If you come back to
the motorhome after,

and you're, like, happy
you know?

I like to see you
happy, so. Yeah.

That's cool.

Ever since I met her, a
little over five years ago,

she's been completely
into dance...

Teaching, choreographing dances.

Go for it.

Yeah. I'm not much of a help

when it comes to
the dance stuff.

Boom, boom.

Foot just kind of needs to stay.

We're both trying to figure
out what each other's doing.

I'm always impressed.

Wah! That's, like,

my favorite move.

Yeah.

Good.

Harrison, do you remember
when I taught you

your ballet
positions?

I know it's all about
your feet, right?

Like, this whole deal,
right?

Yeah. Golly.

Tear my ACL out.
Nice and relaxed.

You're missing the
graceful aspect.

Oh, I'm not graceful?

First. Boom.

Connect the heels.

Straighten the knees. Second.

Boom. Uh-huh.

Third. Boom.

Uh-huh, fourth.

Boom. No.

Boom. Yes.

Boom. Sixth.

Mm. Good job. Yes.

Platinum first place.

Ooh, it's the wifey.

Hello.

Hi. How are you?

Good. What's going on?

Nothing. Just got back from
the doctor's appointment.

Oh, sweet. I just got done
with all my signing stuff.

Well, I'm making meat loaf
and acclimating a fish

to a new fish tank, so.

Mom, meat loaf.

I knew you were
gonna do it. Now.

For almost 10 years.

We had to go to a
fertility specialist.

We have our son. He's 7 now.

We're like, "Okay, you know,
we're ready to do this again."

Back to the doctor's
appointment.

Yeah. Tell me about the
doctor's appointment.

They're like, "We're not
sure why this isn't working.

Why don't you try a
gestational carrier?"

Head size, body size,
all that's good?

They basically said that she's
right now measuring tiny,

except her legs are really
long, and she's super active.

So she's me.

Meat loaf's done. Oh.

All right. Well, I'm pretty
much wrapping up here,

so I'll be on my way home to
enjoy some of that meat loaf.

All right, I'll see
you when you get home.

So I like to
say that Kyle helmet-on

versus Kyle helmet-off

are two totally separate people.

Helmet-on, that is his job.

Now, you take Kyle
away from that element.

He's just a really
genuine dad and husband.

Hey, are you gonna
pull that tooth out now

before we go? Do it.

Do it. Don't you
want to get paid?

Get paid.

Why do you always
need ChapStick?

Because your mom
likes soft lips.

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

Sometimes people have a
hard time differentiating,

like, race car driver
and dad and husband.

Well, I don't have any idea
where this is gonna travel.

This seems excessive.

Oh, I know what it does.

I don't know where it's
going, that's all I'm saying.

It wasn't a race.

It ain't even gonna
fit in the car.

Okay.

We're already late all the time.

I know, you are.
Because I do everything.

Years ago, whoever
worked on your car,

you picked whoever could
do the best possible job

on pit road as the jackman,

as the tire carrier,
as the changer,

and you just went
on, and that was it.

Nowadays, they're
literally scouting talent

for those particular positions.

They are guys from
outside of our sport,

they're not racers,
they're just athletes.

You're not gonna touch a wrench.

Your only job is strictly
to just pit stop that car

when it comes down pit road.

All of this comes with
an element of danger.

Not only does it require

a lot of choreography and
grace and athleticism,

you're also doing this
with cars zipping past you.

These guys literally jump out in
front of 3,400-pound race cars

traveling at high rates
of speed to change tires.

Weeks of lifting
weights, hours upon hours

of watching video.

Is this the first stop?

I was expecting him to
be gone, but he stalled.

Days of preparation
lead up to three,

four, five, six opportunities
on a Sunday to do your job.

Three, two, one.

If you just hold it, hold
it, like here and then...

And then go up, make it.

Ready?

Three, two, one.

The next-gen car, being its
first year on the racetrack,

we're making adjustments on
the car 'cause we may be off.

Definitely need to
have some smarts

and not just be, "I jack car.

I change tire."

Those guys don't work.

Today,
the NASCAR Cup Series

will take to the action
track in Richmond.

Kyle Busch
has a ton of wins here.

So if it's going to happen
and Joe Gibbs Racing

is gonna finally break
back in victory lane,

today's the day I
think it could happen.

Going to Richmond, you
know that Kyle Busch

is gonna be in contention.

Kyle Busch has
gotten around William Byron.

He'll grab second.

At a place where we
wouldn't be surprised to see him

in victory lane.

It's this very strange penalty.

The tape penalty was
pretty frustrating.

It is illegal to
put tape on the grill opening.

They meant to put it
over the brake duct.

You can't run around
the car during a pit stop

and just sit there and
be like nice and smooth

and place it on the
front of the car.

It was not even close to
where it needed to be place.

I think that comes to
sometimes the pit crew guys

not having a complete
understanding

of all the rules, where
a brake duct actually is,

and knowing where exactly
you want to place that.

It's a race killer
for Kyle Busch.

That 11
car is extremely fast.

Hamlin clears Byron.

Checkered flag for Hamlin.

All right!

A disappointed Kyle
Busch finishes ninth

while his teammate,
Denny Hamlin,

celebrates in victory lane.

Much like a
kicker who missed

the game-winning field goal,

when a pit crew member puts
the tape in the wrong spot

or makes the wrong adjustment,

it's easy to highlight
on television,

because this is
professional sports.

This is U.S. motorsports at
the absolute highest level.

If you don't feel
there's pressure,

then you don't
understand the job.

If you don't perform,
you'll be replaced.

Could've had a win
already at this point

of the season, but don't.

Just need to clean up all the
mistakes that are happening.

We are creating a win banner
for Denny's win yesterday

at Richmond.

And here it is, all done.

Ran out of space.

Dale Jarrett
won the first-ever race

for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Dale Jarrett's
gonna win the Daytona 500!

And they've never looked back.

Tony Stewart wins it.

It's a
powerhouse organization

for extremely top-tier drivers,
has everything going for them.

That starts at the top.

He's a coach.

We still call him Coach Gibbs.

Super Bowl-winning
coach for Washington.

I was a big fan when I saw
him walking through the garage

for the first time
back in the '90s,

I couldn't believe it.

He was at our sport, right?

He's since become as successful,
if not more so, in NASCAR

as an owner.

He's developed Joe Gibbs
Racing into a dynasty.

We look up at
that wall and we say,

"It's important,
the stuff up there,"

and we know that we're
judged by winning.

When you can win like
that, I think it's great

to get everybody
together to say thanks.

Hey, gang.

As you guys know, it's been a
struggle for us for a while.

We don't point fingers.

All we do is every single person
here kind of gets to work,

and you guys always
come out the other side.

Let's hang a banner.

Whoo-hoo!

Ol' hurrah down
there. Yay, yay.

Oh, hanging banners?

Mm-hmm.

What up? What up? Hey.

All right, all right.

Any cars around you that
were doing something unique?

To me, the biggest thing was
I was trying to get to the 48

and then it just died.

So, yeah, you were
catching him like crazy.

Yeah, he stepped
it up. 15 to go.

Okay, so he stepped
it up, too, right?

Yeah. Yeah. He was like,

"Oh, I'm not gonna
let the 18 pass me."

So he drove harder.

I mean, do you not see that?

Look it right there,
he's... ing la-di-da.

And then, "Oh...
Here comes Kyle.

He ain't gonna pass me."

Look at you motivating people.

I motivate everybody.

Damn right. Most of the time

they just want to take a picture
when I'm side by side with them,

so they run me
hard for two laps.

This one, I woke up for 15.

I'm a computer, right?

Like I'm the best
damn tool we got,

so I'm the most
expensive one, as well.

So I'm trying to give
them the same information

of, like, what I'm feeling

and what I'm understanding
the vehicle doing

and to help them kind of
correlate some of the changes

that we've been going
through through the year

to help understand making
sense of all of that.

Exactly.

They don't hear all of
everything that happens in here,

and sometimes we
beat them with that

and sometimes we get beat
by them because of that.

We're driving in to
the Wood Brothers.

I want to carry on the
legacy that the Wood Brothers

and their drivers have started.

Going to the Wood Brothers
is like going to the Celtics.

And he's moving.

They've just been
here since the beginning.

David Pearson
pits his Mercury,

and the Wood Brothers give him
enough fuel to go the distance.

One of the original
powerhouse teams.

Well, well, well. How's it going?

It's good to see you.
Yes, sir. Good to see you.

You doing all right?
Yeah, you got a good arm

on you, look like. I'm trying,

I'm trying.

They have such a connection to
every era of NASCAR history.

I don't think that
you can really

put a price on how valuable

that is to still have them
racing in the Cup Series.

We've got a helmet
we need you to sign.

I can sign it. Yep.

It was signed at the time
by every living driver

that had ever driven our car.

So it's kind of a way to
honor the older drivers

and now you.

Instead of listing the
drivers for the Wood Brothers,

the easiest thing to say is if
you drove for the Wood Brothers,

the Hall of Fame is
perhaps in your future.

There's more Hall of Famers
that drove for the Wood Brothers

than people that end up
not in the Hall of Fame.

I mean, from Dale Jarrett

to Kyle Petty to,
back in the day,

the Pearsons, I mean, there's
so many historic drivers.

Respecting the craft
and paying homage to the guys

that came before you,

that means a lot to those guys.

The famous
red and white number 21.

I'm more nervous for
this than I am to race.

Oh.

All right, number
21 coming in to the most skilled

pit crew in the world
probably, the Wood Brothers.

David
Pearson's done it,

Silver Fox, as he storms
across the finish line.

Trevor
Bayne gets the win

for the Wood Brothers.

The
youngest driver here with

the oldest continuous
racing team.

Am I dreaming right now?

Well, this is fairy tale stuff.

That's awesome.

All right, so
he's got a Sunday race,

a Tuesday race.

What is GoPro at the Prices?

- Is he doing karting now?
- Just to play around,

it's just for them to
go have a track day.

Okay. I'm just making
sure we're not doing

a fourth racing series,
like, I cannot add on.

We can. No, I cannot.

We could race every day.

Yay!

You two are fully aware
we're having a baby?

Brexton is now the busiest
6 year old I've ever met.

But now you got to think
there's gonna be three

or four more times in the middle
of the night we're getting up.

I know, I'm going to...
Literally think I should start

an energy drink
company, 'cause if not.

I knew it was gonna be needed.

I can foresee the future.

Are you ready for the
Martinsville race, Dad?

I sure am. I'm ready to go.

Are you gonna win it?
Well, that's the plan.

We go to the racetrack to win.

Hopefully we can.

We made it,
everybody. We're here.

Hey, Brex, you want
to do some film stuff?

Yeah. Now that Brexton

started racing, he takes it
just as seriously as Kyle does.

Before the races,
Brexton's studying film

and going through it with Kyle.

Good start. And do you
always fire in the same spot?

Aren't you supposed to
wait for the first arrow?

Brexton Busch,
don't start there.

That's not the restart zone.

You're up high where
you're supposed to be.

And then these other two
are like, "Wait, what?

Which way are we supposed to go?

And they are
six-wide in the back.

What's my favorite thing to say?

Go,
go, go, go, go!

She screams every lap.

I am pretty loud.

And he's excited for you!

You ready for
Mountain Creek, then?

Yeah, 'cause I'm
gonna kick their...

You're gonna kick their butts?

Well, you better hope so,

because if you don't,
we got it on film.

You feel like you've
got an ace in the hole

having your dad around?

No.

No, I do. I think I do.

I think that's my
biggest advantage.

I mean, this guy was
throwing tennis balls at me

in a quarter midget, because
I was getting distracted.

So he likes to call himself
a hardass, 'cause he was.

And it sucked when
I was a little kid,

you know, I'm just
trying to have fun,

and he's yelling at you, right?

You may as
well get conditioned for it

with people that love you,

because these people
out here don't love him.

They're not supposed to.

They're supposed to defeat him.

You've got to be
a hardass in here.

Martinsville already
is inherently difficult,

because it's a flat track.

It's a short track,
it's a one-lane track.

Teams will tell you
qualifying's always important,

but there are certain racetracks
where it's extra important.

Martinsville is one of those.
It's hard to pass there.

So if you don't qualify
well, you're already

behind the eight ball.

Qualifying,
it's next from Martinsville.

Kyle Busch is still looking
for kind of that spark.

Let's see if
he can get into the top five

across the line. He will not.

Doesn't even make it out of
the first round of qualifying.

And this the 21 car
driven by Harrison Burton.

What an iconic car.

What an opportunity
for Harrison.

Big wheel lock up.

I don't think he's gonna
be happy with that lap.

Damn it.

He's had a little bit of a rocky
introduction to the Cup Series.

Hey, this is the big leagues.

I'm not looking
forward to starting

wherever we're gonna
start.

We'll try and fight
through the field.

Like, that's
why I didn't feel like

we missed air pressure.

I just think I...
up, you know?

Yeah, I did it both laps,
though, a little bit.

I like that you try and make
it about you, but I think

I just screwed up.

Yeah, that sucks.

Damn it.

Yes.

It felt like we had a
pretty fast car there.

So to not go put it
up front is a bummer,

'cause that's your job.

When you miss it, it hurts.

When you have a bad stop,
you don't want to come back

and have another bad stop.

That stop's in the past, okay?

We got another stop.

So we've put up something
about, like, this quote,

like, "Be a goldfish."

I'm pretty sure
goldfish actually have

a much longer memory than people
like to give him credit for.

So there's that.

But if certain things are
happening that didn't end well,

learning from that
and remembering that,

that is important.

Pit stops
will be crucial here,

even more than normal.

If you lose spots on pit road,

you may never get them
back on the racetrack.

Announcer #2:75 years of racing
at Martinsville Speedway.

One of NASCAR's original tracks.

That is a very
technical racetrack.

There is a specific line
that you got to run.

If you don't do it,
you're gonna look

like a fish out of water.

Being a rookie is trial by fire.

You're getting
thrown to the wolves.

Start of this race, don't
worry about a damn thing

except going like hell.
Make it happen, man.

You know what you need
to do with this car,

Have fun.

It's time to
get those game faces on...

400 laps of racing
at Martinsville.

Drivers!

Start your engines!

Three, two, one.

Green flag, green
flag, green flag.

Chase Elliott
leads the field to turn 1.

Good
jump by Elliott.

He will slip away, take
sole possession of the lead.

Kyle Busch is arguably
the best short track driver,

he should be
competing for the win.

Kyle
Busch up a spot,

back a spot, between
15th and 18th position.

Right now,
he's just cruising around

in 16th and 17th.

Not really showing a lot
of speed right there.

Yeah, copy that.

You're driving the
heck out of that thing,

trying to make all
the time you can,

and you just continue
to fall backwards.

And so it's maddening at times,

because you can't put the car
on your back and carry it.

It was probably the hardest
race to pass I've ever been in.

When you mess up in qualifying,
it really carries over

in races like that
in particular.

Everyone's really just
stuck behind each other.

Pit road open this time.

Pit
stops. Lap 185.

Chase Elliott has led them all,

and now he will lead those on
the lead lap onto pit road.

Get ready. Here they come.

Three, two, one, here.

Here's the
race leader, Chase Elliott.

Byron makes
his way down pit road.

William
Byron's team wins the battle

off the pit road.

Byron, the new race leader,
Chase Elliott second.

I'm not sure
I'm gonna find out...

Just do what you
can on the track.

You have to drive
it for what it is,

and sometimes it's
not good enough.

Kyle Busch still
fighting a tight condition

on his race car.

It's... ing time to go.

All right, yep, P28.
They're three laps down.

Obviously not what we
wanted out of that stop.

Wind the
clock for William Byron

off four and he will win
tonight at Martinsville.

Career win number
four for Willy B..

Could've done
things slightly better.

We had one mid-nine,
another mid-10,

but the rest of the day was...

I know we were chasing
it a little bit.

Pit crews are
gonna make mistakes.

It will happen, and they
don't want that moment

to be pinned on them,

when you're the reason
things went wrong.

The way that you
recover from mistakes

really is to put it behind you.

Driver's got to be able to
forgive that immediately.

You can't carry that grudge
against that tire changer

or that carrier the
rest of the race,

the rest of the year.

The guy that created that
problem... clean slate.

Do you think if
your crew knew you better,

they would understand
your frustrations?

I don't think they give two...

No? No.

Like, they're told what
to do, and they do it.

It's a job. I don't
think they care

whether or not I'm mad or sad

or crying or happy.

They're doing their job.

The biggest thing is if I'm
mad or I'm yelling or whatever,

it's at the car.

It's not me versus the
crew or the crew chief.

It's us trying to
tame that beast.

Do you think a lot
of people mistake

you yelling at the crew
instead of the car?

Absolutely, I am misunderstood
my whole life, yeah.

Imagine that your
mentor is also your father

who had success with
what you're trying to do.

Jeff wants him to do
as good as he possibly can,

and he knows he has
greatness in him.

But Jeff is gonna
be hard on him.

Jeff is that type of coach.

Knowing Harrison, like,
if he has a bad day,

he's gonna own it.

So I'm sure that he was
like, "I was lost today."

You want to give him all the
answers to put to the test

before he has to take it.

But there's some you
just can't give him.

You have to let
him figure it out.

And sometimes he's not
gonna figure it out,

and you're gonna be
frustrated by that,

and he's frustrated.

Even after this rookie year,

that'll never go away.

I'm a pretty laid back guy.

Got a really long fuse,
but when it goes, it's bad.

You know, when you're an
emotional 21 year old,

and you had a bad
race or a good race,

and here comes old dad.

Sometimes you're like,
"Man, get out of here.

I'm pissed, right?"

And sometimes, well,
you need to hear it.

It normally is what
you need to hear.

Just one mistake in qualifying

and all of a sudden, you
know, you start in the back,

and it doesn't matter
how good you are.

That one mistake really bites
you in the butt for sure.

Just, you know, keep going.

Being an owner and
a driver is certainly

a balancing act.

You're happy there?

Dirt and mud really
kind of forced me out

of my comfort zone.

I can't see.

You win a race, and
it puts you in the playoffs.

We only need one, but
we've got to make some hay.

This is our only chance.

I'm out of control.

It is scary, but
pray that it all works out.

We are going high speeds,
and we are in a cage.

Hey, you all right, man?
