Race Across the World (2019–…): Season 3, Episode 7 - Liverpool, Nova Scotia - full transcript
Their journey started on Canada's Pacific coast 41 days ago. Now the teams have the Atlantic within their reach as they race to the seventh checkpoint at the seaside town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
The desire to explore our planet
has never been stronger.
But in travelling over,
are we missing the joys
of journeying through?
Canada, the second-largest country
in the world.
From Pacific to Atlantic Ocean -
flight time, seven hours.
But could you successfully navigate
this grueling
16,000-kilometre route
at ground level?
Five pairs of ordinary Brits
are attempting just that...
Come on! Run!
...in a demanding
and challenging race.
All I'm saying is, I'm going to die.
We're all going to die.
They'll head deep into the wild...
Who gets to do this?
...Cross vast prairies...
This is awesome! Road trip!
...soar high into the Rockies...
This is what dreams are bloody
made of, innit? All this vastness.
...to the very edges of civilisation.
We are heading into the unknown.
We can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
It's dark, raining,
got no money.
Honestly, this is awful.
Oh! I don't like this!
They'll need charm...
Parlez-vous anglais?
Mission accomplished.
...hard work...
We're haemorrhaging money.
We can claw the money back.
Yeah, we'll work.
...and ingenuity to get them through.
What a difference a day can make.
Oh, you're kidding me!
Have they got what it takes?
Oh, Dad! This is the hardest thing
I think I've done.
You know what's impressed me? You.
I really, really appreciate it.
I believe in you.
I know. I just don't believe in me.
I just cost us the race, Dad.
The rewards are great...
Mother Nature at her best.
Never seen anything like it.
...and for the first team to the
finish line, a prize of £20,000...
Every second counts.
...in a race...
If they come behind us now,
I'm taking the bag off you.
...across the world.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Seen enough or do you want
a bit more?
Previously...
Back in the land of the living!
...the teams reached
Canada's big cities.
It's bloody bedlam, innit?
So you just have a dig
for no reason?
A quarrelsome Zainib and Mobeen...
We decided we will pay
for your bus ticket.
Thank you so much!
...had a helping hand...
Does that mean you love me?
I've always loved you.
...to leapfrog from fourth to first.
Yes! Come on! We did it!
I think we should double-check
the ferry time. OK.
After missing the early boat...
We're now in last place.
...Monique kept her team in the fray.
We don't need to get accommodation.
We can just go straight through.
Tricia and Cathie's
best-laid plans faltered...
Can I just have... just
a minute of headspace?
...and they fell into last place...
Gutted. Gutted. Pants.
...but a bitter blow to
Claudia and Kevin's budget...
500 bucks on hotel rooms
just destroyed us.
...left them on the brink.
Claudia is... Yeah,
she's not in a good place.
I mean, she's ready to go.
This is a vibe that I like.
I feel like I'm on holiday.
Like, people, civilisation.
Yeah, being in a city's
kind of cool.
The sixth checkpoint
in the race across Canada
and a chance for the teams
to explore before they can move on.
I want to keep first place.
Do not want to let it go.
How are you feeling?
I don't want to say smug...
But smug.
With just two legs left to run,
Zainib and Mobeen are
top of the leader board
and the other teams have 12 hours
to make up.
We are the only ones
that haven't won a leg,
but it's not the final one,
so it don't matter!
We've learned from a lot of
our mistakes
and we're being more clever
in terms of our planning.
Have they peaked too early? Ooh!
That's what I'm saying.
It's disappointing to be fourth,
but it's only 20 minutes
behind second and third.
Well, there's only one way to go
now... Yeah, exactly.
...and that's up, whereas there's
a lot of room for people...
To go down! ..to come down.
But position in the race
isn't everything.
With precisely $551.55
of their budget left,
Claudia and Kevin are running
on fumes.
You know, there's not a lot
of money left in the wallet.
It's easy to hang up your clogs
and walk away,
but I don't want to go home
just yet.
I think we've just got into
the swing of it.
I'm just not sure
I want that to end yet.
I don't want it to end. And when
we go home, I don't want it to end.
Maybe we needed this crash course
in, you know,
being around each other
every minute of every day.
I think there's moments
of just sheer brilliance
between the two of us.
We got 550 bucks in the wallet.
We can eke out the next leg.
Hopefully, there's
a couple of opportunities for work.
I think we've got to give it a go.
So we're going to do this, yeah?
We're going to give this
one big last push?
I think we have to, until
we've run out of money, really.
11pm.
Hi! Hey.
We'd like to check out, please.
First to find out where
they'll be heading next,
Zainib and Mobeen.
I believe this is for you.
Ooh, thank you! Thank you!
Liverpool!
Don't want to go to Scouseland!
Why are they sending us there?
THEY LAUGH
I love it! I'm a Manc!
After starting their race 41 days
ago on Canada's Pacific Coast,
the teams now have the Atlantic
within their reach...
...1,100km from Quebec City, lapping
the shores of the seventh checkpoint
at the seaside town
of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
Somewhere around here... Here it is!
Yeah, there it is. Boom, boom!
Nova Scotia, New Scotland.
Nova Scotia,
along with New Brunswick
and Prince Edward Island,
forms the Maritimes, so called
for the huge role the ocean plays
in Canada's three smallest
provinces.
We've got 12 hours ahead of
everyone else, so it's ours to lose.
Let's go!
We're hitting the East Coast
now, so...
We keep hearing about
the hospitality,
so maybe we can use them...
- Use them and abuse them!
But so late in the day,
Zainib and Mobeen's options
out of town are limited.
Excuse me!
Hello, sorry to bother you.
There is a bus.
What time does it leave?
Tomorrow. 9.45.
It gives a chance to the other teams
to catch up, basically,
and make their moves.
I'm thinking of getting a hotel
and then get up early morning,
get on that bus tomorrow,
put ourselves ahead of the teams.
Here, get this open.
Let's have a look at what route
we are thinking,
so that we can get started
in the morning.
To reach Liverpool,
the teams could head inland
through New Brunswick's capital,
Fredericton, then catch a ferry
across the Bay of Fundy
to Nova Scotia.
Alternatively, they could navigate
the picturesque fishing towns
along New Brunswick's coast,
allowing them to cross
to Nova Scotia by land.
There is a job working with
a lady who owns hotels.
And it's a bed and board.
We really get to know the person
that we're working for
and then they do give us
a lot of help.
We can then decide what route
will be faster for us.
Planning an early start tomorrow,
Zainib and Mobeen aim to head along
New Brunswick's coast
for a job in Miramichi.
We've got the edge here.
We've raced smart and used
our personalities, I guess,
to know people. And a lot of people
have given us a lot of help.
It's awesome.
I want to go win this now.
If we make out an early exit
from Quebec City,
we keep our lead.
You think about it.
I'm going to bed.
Let's walk and drink.
Who's Zara? Me.
That's my Starbucks name.
Forget trying to spell out Zainib
to them!
9.45am.
So can I please book two tickets
going to Rimouski
this morning at...?
9.45 this morning? Yeah. Perfect.
Are there any other buses
later in the day?
At 2.00. OK.
Thank you.
2pm. That's ages away!
So that means we put ourselves
five hours ahead
of whichever team wants to get on
that bus, which is good to know.
Thank you. Mereci!
On the first available bus
out of town,
Zainib and Mobeen are on their way
to Rimouski,
looking to head into New Brunswick
from there.
It's good to know that we're ahead
of the other teams.
I've just got to go remind myself -
we went from fourth to first,
we can easily go from first to last.
Morning! Morning. Morning!
Next to depart...
There it is... Liverpool!
..Liverpool.
...the two teams in second place,
neck and neck.
Well, it's been nice, guys.
Good luck. Good luck.
See you at the next checkpoint!
Right. Ready for this? Yep.
We've got $550 left in the budget.
We have to get a job and earn money,
so that dictates our route.
We could do the brewing job...
Right. ..which is guaranteed work.
So, Picaroons Brewing Company,
Fredericton.
Aiming to scrape together
enough cash
to get them through
the final two legs,
Claudia and Kevin are heading inland
to a job in Fredericton.
First things first, we need to
pick up some supplies. Yeah.
Look at that. Look at the price
of that! Bloody hell!
Now that we've only got two
legs to go,
I just want to go
the most direct route...
Yeah, same here. ..because we need
to be first or second. Yep.
Yeah, so what do you think
could be quicker?
It could do that.
It could do that.
Or it could do that as well.
I don't think we should
get bogged down on it.
What are you thinking, Dad?
I'm just thinking
we need to make a choice
cos we're wasting time now.
It's a tricky one.
We're struggling.
We know that
we need to get on with it!
Look at the bloody length on that!
While two teams dither...
It's got to the point where
I've actually been measuring out
the grams and what you get
per penny.
Let's just go back to
the bus station
and we'll find out
information there.
...already at the bus station...
Can you help us, please?
...last to leave the checkpoint,
Tricia and Cathie.
We are trying to get
to New Brunswick.
Towards that...
There's one going to Rimouski...
OK. ..this afternoon at 2.00.
OK. Two tickets.
It's $150.51. OK.
You're going to be the last persons.
So we're getting the last tickets
on this bus?
We may see other teams,
but who knows?
So we need to get our tickets now.
Bonjour! Bonjour! Parlez-vous
anglais, s'il vous plait?
Yes. Yes? I do. Hello!
We're trying to get to, eventually,
Liverpool in Nova Scotia.
There's only one bus.
It's leaving at 2.00,
but there's no more room.
So we'd have to wait until tomorrow
to get... Tomorrow morning. OK.
Bonjour.
Bonjour.
Riviere-du-Loup... Yeah.
There's no more room until tomorrow.
Really? It's at 9.45.
In the morning?
What a bummer!
Despite leaving the checkpoint
20 minutes after the others,
Tricia and Cathie secure the only
tickets on the last bus out of town
towards New Brunswick.
Hey, you. You all right?
How did we get here, like,
quicker than them? I don't know.
Maybe we spent too long planning.
I don't know.
At the minute, it looks like we're
in second place. We've just gone...
Yeah.
Oh, here's our bus.
Oh, here's our bus!
Should we go and wave them goodbye?
No! Absolutely not!
That's horrible.
But quite funny. No!
Stop it!
I feel awful, but I don't.
I don't. Sorry, but I don't.
Also travelling to Rimouski
four and a quarter hours
after Zainib and Mobeen...
There's a job in Miramichi.
And then coming down to Shediac.
Yeah, there's jobs available there.
...the best friends are planning
to fit in two jobs
before reaching Nova Scotia.
I think that's a really
good route, actually.
We've talked about strategy.
We're going to build up our money
so that, in the last leg,
we can just go.
So what are our options here?
For the two teams left behind
in Quebec City...
So we can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
HE CHUCKLES
We're !
It's a negative situation
that we're in.
I mean, I can be positive
and be like,
"Yeah, I hope we get a lift."
But hope's not guaranteed, is it?
The next few hours are crucial
because we need to get out
of here tonight.
If we don't get out of here,
we'd just be out of the race
with a load of money.
Alternatively, we can spend money
and try to continue.
You can't get back time,
you CAN earn money.
Parlez-vous anglais?
Yes.
We need to get to Riviere-du-Loup.
How much?
400.
Can you do it any less than that?
Cos we're on a very tight budget.
OK, give me 340...
3407340. Fine.
340. Fine. Yeah, let's go.
Forking out 18% of their remaining
budget,
Monique and Ladi are on their way
to Riviere-du-Loup,
over 100 kilometres shy of
where a bus could have taken them.
We don't know about onward travel
from there,
but it's a risk that
we've had to take.
And I guess we just hope
it pays off.
Bonjour! Excusez-moi. OK.
We are travelling to Fredericton.
Yes. We're trying to car-share
out of town.
With the cost of a taxi
out of the question...
So you have to walk to the ferry...
Yep.
...cross the river with the ferry
to Levis...
To Levis? Levis, on the other side.
OK. Thank you.
Merci beaucoup. Thank you.
...Claudia and Kevin take a gamble...
Right, 15.40 for the both of you.
And that's for a return, both ways?
Yes, exactly, back and forth.
Do you want to take the risk?
We're hoping that we're going to
get a lift... Just a single.
So just two singles, please,
to go over.
...the price of ferry tickets
on finding a ride,
across the St Lawrence River
and the town of Levis.
We don't want to be coming back
through this tunnel.
Yeah, I think those
that are coming on cars
have parked in the car park there
and they just then just come onto
the roll-on/roll-off ferry, innit?
We need to just get off the ferry
before the cars get off the boat.
It's quite lovely out here!
Almost 500 kilometres away...
It's quite warm as well,
even though it's windy.
...Zainib and Mobeen have entered
their seventh province,
New Brunswick - the only one
that's officially bilingual,
with English and French
spoken interchangeably.
After catching their second bus
of the day,
husband and wife have
reached Campbellton...
We're not doing a paid job, so
I'm a bit worried for the finances
now on this leg.
...stretching their lead...
It's so bad, but the thought of
actually shoplifting
has crossed my mind.
What has it boiled down to?
...and looking to stretch
their budget.
How much are your bruised,
black bananas?
If you need to get rid of
anything... You guys can have them.
Thanks!
Yeah, we're not going to
sell them, anyway.
You guys can have a drink
from the fountain, if you want.
We can have a drink as well?
From the fountain? Yeah, yeah.
Thanks, man.
Every little helps, man.
I've got no shame now!
I've become a tramp.
Total, utter tramp!
This is a lot of Canada Dry.
Right. That's all the cars
gone, then.
I think it's going to be the bus
tomorrow morning, Dad. Yep.
In Levis, Claudia and Kevin's bid
to kick-start their leg
has gone nowhere.
We're just going to get the ferry
back tonight,
stay there and get the bus
in the morning.
There's Quebec. This is Levis.
It's not touristy this side,
so it's going to be cheaper.
We just can't afford to stay
in Quebec this evening.
So, effectively, we're now looking
on the other side of the river,
in Levis. We can get the 9.00 ferry
across the river to Quebec again.
At least we know we've got a bus
out of here tomorrow morning.
Having spent $7.70 to get here,
they're ten kilometres further away
from where they need to be -
back in Quebec City, to catch
tomorrow's bus out of town.
What a day! What are we left with,
2107 I didn't count all the change.
Oh. we'll have about $220,
probably. OK.
Thank God for microwave pot noodles.
I know! $1.79. Oh!
It's a bargain, innit?
It's quite spicy.
Bonjour! Ah, bonjour!
After spending the night
in Rimouski...
Ooh, look at this!
Oh, look at this!
What a beautiful car! Yeah!
...Tricia and Cathie have persuaded
hostel owner Paul
to drive them to a nearby town...
Your ride is OK? My car is...
Very, very nice. Yeah?
It is so beautiful.
...from there, aiming to find
onward transport south.
So we're heading down to Miramichi.
Maybe I drive you directly...
Oh, thank you! Thank you!
Two hours more. Oh!
We're feeling really good
this morning.
I think Tricia and I,
being a pair of females,
probably have an advantage
being picked up.
We are the old ladies of the group.
That means we might actually
have jumped everybody
and started into first now.
I know, we might...! Ooh!
Oh, my goodness!
I think you have
the lucky day today.
It's definitely a lucky day.
200 kilometres behind...
Bonjour!
- Sorry.
Oh.
OK.
Outright no, but...
HE SIGHS
...after their taxi spend yesterday,
Monique and Ladi are also
looking for a lift.
Oh. OK.
I'm not going to kill you
or mug you. Damn!
Bonjour! Pardon?
Oh, you know what, !
Do you know, I hate doing this,
and I'm going to say it -
we have a very different experience
standing in a garage
based on any of
the other competitors.
Like, just plain, simple fact -
we do.
I don't enjoy doing this.
I already have preconceived ideas
about the way we look
versus other people in the back
of my head. And it's not nice.
I don't enjoy hitchhiking.
Although me and Dad have lucked out
many a time when it comes to asking
for lifts, there's many times where
you feel... unwelcome or unwanted.
Parlez-vous anglais?
Francais.
OK.
Wow.
Wow, wow, wow, wow!
If I was at home, if I've ever
been in a situation where I felt
I've been judged, I wouldn't
put myself in that position again,
whereas in this journey, you're
still having to put yourselves
in those positions.
It's just not a nice feeling.
So, yeah.
Monique, I feel you all the way.
You just have to keep on
trying and hoping.
Having Monique have to go through
this doesn't fill me with joy.
You want to protect your children
from the harms of this world
as much as you possibly can.
But this is an experience
that we're both going through,
and it's good that she isn't
doing this alone.
Bonjour! Er...
Parlez-vous anglais?
I'm an English guy.
Ah! Bro!
What's up?
Me and my daughter are trying to get
a lift over to Fredericton.
Are you going in that direction?
Yeah, I'm going that direction.
Can you give us a lift there?
Of course, without saying so!
I'm just going to get the gas and
then I think I will bring you guys.
It'll be wickedly appreciated,
my friend. No problem.
How you find yourself up in Canada?
Just following my dreams, bro.
Yeah, yeah, I hear that.
I hear that.
And straight from Jamaica?
Straight from Jamaica.
Oh! I've got family in Jamaica.
My daughter is half-Jamaica.
I'm Nigerian, but my partner
is from Jamaica.
I give it five minutes
before Dad mentions he's got
a jerk pan at home,
if he hasn't already mentioned it.
Oh, my days!
Back in the running,
father and daughter have a ride
of 273 kilometres to Fredericton.
So, this is the ultimate
question now. Right.
Do you have a jerk pan in your yard?
Me have a jerk pan in my yard!
Took you 20 minutes.
What, it took me 20 minutes
to talk about jerk? Yep!
Yeah! Because he loves it!
Exactly! It makes the world
go round.
It's a must. That's it.
Jerk pork... Yeah. ..jerk chicken,
roast fish. Right.
Yeah, man! Dad's not even Jamaican!
No, it's the twang.
It comes out when he's jerking
sometimes, the twang,
or when you bump into Jamaican
people in a truck in Canada!
That's when I put my applewood
on there,
so I get enough of the smoke
that comes with the applewood...
Because of the smoke!
Yeah! Yeah, man!
If there's one thing that I do know,
it's everywhere that I go
in the world,
I always buck up with a Jamaican...
Yeah.
...and I always buck up with
a Nigerian. Nigerian, yeah.
It's comforting. Yeah.
I must admit, you have really
made my trip to Canada now.
THEY LAUGH
250 kilometres closer
to the checkpoint...
I've got to clean
the chairs!
Having reached the picturesque
fishing town of Miramichi,
Zainib and Mobeen are straight down
to business...
It's not the most pleasant,
but in return for a meal
and somewhere decent to sleep,
it's worth it, in my opinion.
...hoping their boss, Mrs Pershad,
will make an appearance.
So where does Mrs Pershad live,
then?
She currently resides in Moncton.
So does she drive out
to Moncton herself? Yes.
Moncton is on Zainib and Mobeen's
route south.
I was just wondering if she could
give us a lift tomorrow,
if she's going to be here.
We can always ask, can't we?
Absolutely. You don't ask,
you don't get.
That's what we've learnt.
Bed and board options usually mean
that you're hanging around people
for a lot longer, and I think
that gives us a chance
to really get to know them
and them a chance to get to know us,
so that we can then -
in the nicest way - use them.
Hello! Mrs Pershad!
Hello! How are you?
I'm doing good, thank you.
Nice to meet you. I would like
you all to join us for supper.
Let's do it. Excellent, yeah!
You got it? Oh, wow. Amazing!
Smells so good.
I really hope that you'll enjoy it.
Thank you so much.
Originally from India, Mrs Pershad
emigrated to Canada 40 years ago.
I came as a new bride.
It was an arranged marriage.
And after coming out of the flight,
my sari was flying everywhere!
You came off that plane
with a sari?
Like, I'd be too afraid to do that.
It takes a little bit of courage...
Of course! ..to stand out...
Yeah. ..different...
What I received living here
in Miramichi
was beyond my expectation.
This has all been so nice.
The food has been amazing.
Honestly, I've not had a biryani
since we left,
and I've missed it massively.
Pleasure was all mine.
We need to get to Truro,
past Moncton.
If you're willing to cramp up, I can
take you back tomorrow with me!
So that actually works perfect
for us.
Moncton sorted!
So... we have just got the most
fabulous options available to us...
Too many to choose from!
..the first of which is nothing...
...and the other option
is car sharing.
Having finally caught the bus
out of Quebec City this morning...
I don't suppose you're going
this way, by any chance,
New Brunswick?
No. No? OK.
...Claudia and Kevin are still close
to 400 kilometres away
from Fredericton, where they plan
to resuscitate their finances.
Should we just get a slushy?
I've starved myself for weeks...
...and you're on about
getting a slushy?
It is draining, not having any money
and trying to get a lift
from other people and
ask for free stuff.
It's hard. It really is.
Just been another long five hours of
trying to car-share this afternoon.
Bottom line is this -
we've got pocket change
and a few notes at the moment.
We are living on the bones
of our arse.
If we get to the point of
no money tomorrow
and we can't make it to the job,
then tomorrow is the final day.
But I really would like
to get to the sea,
just to say that I've got there -
from saltwater to saltwater -
to see it through to the bitter end,
knowing that we gave it
every potential shot that
we possibly could do.
it, let's have fun.
Let's have an ice cream.
We've lasted 43 days
without buying an ice cream.
Yeah, it,
let's have an ice cream.
I want a Cornetto with nuts on it.
Just outside of Miramichi...
Lovely to meet you. Yeah,
lovely to meet you guys too!
We're going to be the crew here,
helping with the tepees here...
Amazing! Brilliant.
OK. Let's do this.
...one of the oldest continuously
inhabited indigenous settlements
in Canada. In summer, visitors
are able to stay here,
to experience what life was like for
the Mi'kmaq people centuries ago.
One, two, three!
Keep going your side, Cathie.
Helping the local Mi'kmaq youth
get the site prepared,
young-at-heart Tricia and Cathie.
Ow, ow!
It's really good fun,
putting up the tepee.
That's it.
And what's even more exciting
is that, tonight,
we'll be able to spend the night
in it. And we're being fed.
That's helped our budget enormously.
So, we need to turn these round
a hit.
Hang on a sec.
Tricia, I think it's OK.
Tricia just loves to be involved.
I just let her get on with it.
Right, hang on, hang on, hang on.
I haven't got my foot right.
I've just got it.
I'm just holding it.
I'm more likely to sort of
stand back and wait.
It's just how we're different.
Is there anything I can help with?
No, love.
You sure? Yeah, yeah.
I'm just craving some time
without anybody around.
Yeah, I think she's a bit pissed off
with me today
and needs a bit of time on her own,
which I understand.
Shall I just roll this so that
it doesn't get tangled over here?
Will that help?
Not really. OK.
I'm doing OK, love. OK.
I love spending time with Trish,
we have such a laugh, but when
you're with someone 24 hours a day,
you know, you're bound to have
a moment where you just think,
"All right, do you know what?
Just give me a bit of space!”
Closer to town...
Hello, Mrs Pershad!
Hi, good morning! How are you?
We're fine.
...Zainib and Mobeen's lift
with Mrs Pershad
will take them to Moncton.
You know the rafting experience
that we're doing,
it all depends on the tide
of the water.
But they have their eyes focused
187 kilometres beyond there,
near the town of Truro, Nova Scotia.
Later today,
an unmissable opportunity.
During high tide
in the Bay of Fundy,
large volumes of water will funnel
through a narrow inlet
to create a huge tidal bore
that the couple hope to raft.
Their trips start at 5pm.
Give me about 40 minutes
and we are ready to go.
That would be amazing.
Thank you, Mrs Pershad.
Thank you so much.
Race hard and have some fun.
Pfft.
I'm just waiting for Terry
to come back. OK.
And as soon as he comes,
we're ready to go. Perfect.
OK? OK, thank you.
When she said 40, I didn't
think it would be 40.
To catch it, they'll need to cover
over 300km in four hours.
I hope she knows how to put
the pedal to the metal.
Almost 300km behind
the leading teams,
Claudia and Kevin's search for a
ride to Fredericton
began 22 hours ago.
Right now, we can't afford
a hotel for accommodation. No.
The important thing for us is to get
to Fredericton as soon as possible.
If we can do that by lunchtime,
I mean, it's happy days.
You guys are going to Fredricton?
We are. Are you going there?
My name's Amber. I'll take you.
What? Really?
I will, yeah. Oh, my God!
I'm planning on opening my shop.
My shop's right down the road.
Then we can take off. OK.
Yeah, that'd be amazing.
Do you want to do that? Yeah.
Brilliant. Absolutely. Awesome.
I'm Kev, by the way. This is my
daughter, Claudia. Yeah, Amber, sorry.
Nice to meet me.
Pleased to meet you.
I love what you guys are doing.
I couldn't.
I don't have the balls to, but...
I'm sure you do!
My shop's right here.
It's not far. Oh, cool.
Take a look around. If you have any
questions, let me know.
I won't be long.
How bizarre!
We're in a cannabis shop.
Recreational use of cannabis
has been legal in Canada since 2018.
Is it your first
time in a cannabis shop?
Yeah, absolutely. Obviously in the
UK, cannabis is illegal.
Completely illegal?
Completely.
It's just bizarre it's in, like,
some sort of sweet jars.
Yeah.
Can I take a photograph?
Yeah, go right ahead.
You've even got cannabis lip gloss!
What?!
Did you guys eat this morning?
We're OK. We've had a cereal bowl.
You OK?
I'll buy you breakfast if you want.
We can't ask that. You're already
doing us a massive favour.
I'm offering. You didn't ask,
I offered. There's a difference. OK.
We can... We can accept an offer.
OK. Yeah.
We'll pick up some breakfast
on the way, then.
It's hot!
Oh!
OK. Al right, ready to roll?
Absolutely.
What a difference a day makes.
To basically running down our
budget,
now I'm eating bagel with bacon,
egqg, cheese. Beautiful.
Obviously it was meant to be that
we're supposed to carry on, Dad.
Can't give up yet.
Claudia and Kevin are finally
on their way
to pick up some much-needed work.
If this is the map of Canada,
how would you say your journey...?
Like, up and down? Yeah.
OK. Wow.
Emotionally, mentally, and actually
physically up and down.
Well said. Well said.
I admire that a lot.
You have no idea.
I knew my father
for two years of my life.
I haven't talked to him since I was
pregnant with my first,
but you are very lucky to be able
to do that with your dad.
I'm jealous on that one,
I can't lie.
I wish I would have done something like
that with my mom, may she rest in peace.
She passed away about a year
and a half ago.
At least you can try and do
something like that with your girls.
Oh, yeah. Oh, I'm going to cry...
Oh, I'm sorry.
I just don't want to cry and drive.
I'm happy. I'm kind of happy to be,
like, a little drop in the water
and be part of it, you know?
Yeah, awesome.
Already in Fredericton...
This is so nice, Dad.
Yeah, I know it is.
...Monique and Ladi kill time
before their onward journey.
Sitting down, enjoying the sun.
Imagine having a jerk pan
out here now.
Bisected by the Saint John River,
the capital of New Brunswick
is a cultural hotbed of theatres,
art galleries and museums.
Monique and her dad, however,
have opted
for the white sand
beaches of Killarney Lake.
Are you coming on a road trip
again with me
when this is over and done with?
I'd fly somewhere.
All right.
As much as I could spend another
hour here,
you know we're going to have
to go soon.
I thought I had meat on my butt
and whenever I ride a bike,
I'm reminded how much
of a pancake batty I have.
I can feel it in my bones.
Blame your mum!
Departing at 6:20pm,
the bus to Saint John.
Are we going the right way, Dad?
From there, they will be able
to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia.
Excuse me, sir. Yeah?
I'm wondering whether you can help.
Do you know about the ferries that
go from Saint John to Digby? Yeah.
The ferry leaves Saint John
at 8am.
OK. And arrives in Digby at 2:15.
I believe it's roughly $120
per person.
OK.
So far this leg we've spent $646.60.
So worried about the budget,
considering we hadn't worked this
leg, so...
Do you know of anyone in Saint John
that may be looking for someone
to help them work?
Let me send a few messages and see.
I have a few friends
that own pizza places.
Oh, that would be brilliant.
Thank you so much.
We can do anything -
cleaning, cooking.
We've done it all.
One o'clock tomorrow?
OK. Perfect.
Yeah, so one o'clock tomorrow
at the Tipsy Tomato,
and you can work until 8:00
or 9:00 at night.
Oh, my God.
You're an absolute godsend!
Thank you so much.
I'm excited now.
I've never worked
in a pizza restaurant.
I'll tell you what, though. When
lockdown hit, I applied for Domino's
cos I thought, "I can drive
and I like pizza."
I didn't get accepted, though.
Thank you so much. It's been a
pleasure to spend time with you.
Are you heading towards Truro,
by any chance?
No.
Argh.
Mrs Pershad has dropped Zainib
and Mobeen 140km away
from catching the tidal bore.
Excuse me. Do you know how far Truro
is from here?
Probably about an hour from Truro.
Yeah?
Are you heading that way,
by any chance?
I'm heading for Halifax, so, yes.
Oh, my gosh. Could you drop us off?
That's not a problem, actually.
If you'll just let me go
to the bathroom, I'll come right
back. Yeah, please.
That would be amazing.
Sounds like we've got a ride.
We're going to get
you there. Don't worry.
And welcome to Nova Scotia.
Oh, nice! We made it.
Zainib and Mobeen clock
up their eighth province.
Almost entirely surrounded by sea,
Nova Scotia's history and daily
life is inextricably bound
to the Atlantic Ocean,
embodied by the 160 lighthouses
guarding its coast.
Where the hell is this place?
Guys, I think we're going
the wrong way.
Keep putting this address
in, it keeps changing.
The highest tide in the world fills
the Bay of Fundy
with billions of tonnes of water.
Back to Truro, Andrea.
Yeah, bite my head off.
Well, I'm sorry, but...
No, it's not your fault, Andrea.
Sorry. It's not me, it's the
navigation. I'm aware it's not my fault.
No, it's not yours.
I'm going back the way we came.
Yeah.
I'm pretty good at doing that.
Don't want you guys to have a fight.
Are you kidding?
How many fights is that today?
Oh, look, you can see people
on their boats there.
Oh, my gosh. We made it.
You're going to feel like I'm
rushing you. That's fine.
Time and tide wait for no-one. We had to send our
crew out, so we're going to get you up to them,
but this is going to be fast
and furious. OK. Awesome. Let's go.
That's awesome.
That's how we do it. That's how we
do it.
Oh, yeah, that's quite fast.
It didn't feel like we were
going to make it
and I'm so happy
that we're here now.
There we go.
Whoa!
Oh, yeah!
Oh! Agh!
Whoa, we're going to sink, mate.
Unsinkable! Just like Titanic!
Oh, shit! I was gone then!
I nearly went!
Incredible.
Oh, my days!
After everything that we've been
through today, that was worth it.
When we were in those big waves
and it filled up,
I thought he'd sunk the boat.
That was pretty epic,
so for me to say that I enjoyed it
means that I REALLY enjoyed it.
Not only was it fun,
but it means that we get
into checkpoint tomorrow.
If it's OK, on me, like, I'll pay
for the hotel
for a night for you guys.
You can't do that. You...
That's too kind.
No, no, no, no.
Like, it's just...
It's the least I can do.
This doesn't happen in real life,
does it? No!
Courtesy of Amber, Claudia and Kevin
have reached Fredericton...
You guys are good to check in
whenever you want.
It's already paid. Oh... Brilliant.
...with a place to stay tonight
and $94.35 left in their pockets.
It's been a really hard week
and I think, like,
it's just really hit us,
what we're actually doing.
We've got no money and...
VOICE BREAKS
And then out of the blue, this...
...godlike creature comes in, sweeps
us off our feet, packs us into her car.
Wasn't going to go today,
but she thought, ", I'll give
you a lift anyway."
And here we are in Fredericton,
outside the brewery,
ready to go in and do a bit of work.
I mean, how does that happen?
Thank you so much. No, thank you,
guys. It was a pleasure to meet you.
I had such a ball, such a...
Random adventures are the best.
I love helping people and...
...I lost my mom...
...so to see, like, parent and child
doing something like this...
Awesome. Thanks very much indeed.
Ciao. Thanking you! Have a good one.
...I want to support it as much as I
can, cos we're not all that lucky.
I think there is one person
in a million like Amber.
It's like a bloody sauna in here.
Oh. Bloody net!
Ooh, my...
Pt!
What am I doing?
I need Velcro or something.
Just on my mouth!
Take one corner,
take the other corner.
It will collapse.
Having also spent the night
under canvas...
...Monique and Ladi are in
the bustling port of Saint John,
the gateway to Nova Scotia.
Hi. We was in contact with Steve
and he said that you guys
may have a shift for us today.
Absolutely.
But before they can jump
on a ferry...
Red, Radler... Oh!
Red, Radler.
So, we have the Red and the Radler.
Awesome, thank you. Thank you.
The ferry's not until
tomorrow morning.
We want to make sure our budget's
as healthy as possible
going into the last leg.
Thanks for waiting.
What's your feeling about
clam pizzas?
Dad loves working behind the bar
because he just gets to talk
to everyone.
He's chatting to people now.
Travelling across Canada
and just happened to pick up a shift
here today.
And that will help us on our budget
on our way,
because we've got a limited budget.
The important thing is
are you having any fun?
Oh, yeah, most definitely
having fun.
Canada's a great place.
There you go. Thank you. Enjoy.
Thank you, Phillip. Appreciate it.
Phillip, who I met inside the bar
and I was talking to,
he's just bought us a punnet
of strawberries.
Aw! That's so nice!
I know. How lovely! It's just
like, wow.
Gestures of kindness
are always overwhelming...
...in particular when it comes
from places that you don't expect...
...where you have experienced
some extreme hardships.
They mean a lot.
So tomorrow we just need
to be up at the crack,
get to that ferry terminal.
There's no way
that we're missing that.
Already in Nova Scotia...
I hope there's a bus.
I really hope there's a bus.
Hi, me and my wife are trying
to get to Liverpool.
Is there anything that goes today?
The closest I could get
you would be to Halifax today.
OK.
...Zainib and Mobeen have the seventh
checkpoint in their sights.
I only have enough space
for one more person on my bus.
Oh! Oh, God.
Has everyone checked in, though?
Can we be put on, like,
the wait list?
Um, I don't have a wait list.
I just have to wait for them
to arrive. To come.
If it wasn't raining like it is,
I would be willing to give
hitchhiking a go.
But it's miserable outside.
It looks pretty full.
Yeah, it looks rammed.
They're just doing the final
count now. OK. Thank you.
Please.
If we don't get this bus, it might
give the others a chance
to either catch up or overtake.
Yes, there are two seats available.
Thank you so much, guys.
Just 227km now
stand between them...
You are a life-saver, sir.
Thanks. Thank you so much, sir.
Thank you so much.
...and the checkpoint in Liverpool.
Close call. I think that's the
summary of our whole trip so far.
We've been taking chances
and it's been paying off.
I could do this all day!
Before Claudia and Kevin can focus
on the checkpoint,
finally, an opportunity
to resurrect their budget.
This is getting me one step
closer to saltwater.
That's what it all boils down to.
For ex-publican Kevin,
a bus man's holiday.
I'm quite enjoying it as well.
Fredericton is home to two
university campuses.
Keeping the students happy -
one of the highest number
of taprooms per head in Canada.
I think your dad's sweating
a bit on the other end.
Love it. Yeah? Make him work for it.
You might need to give him a hand.
Yeah?
Yeah. He's getting behind
a little bit. OK.
Pack these up, and that should be it
for the shift.
Getting dizzy now.
Here you go.
Cheers, guys. Cheers. Cheers.
Ah!
What a difference a day can make.
I went through a phase yesterday
of wondering if...
...if that was it.
But I didn't want to give up.
If it went the wrong way,
we could have been skint last night.
And I think tonight I can sleep
safe in my bed
knowing that we're in a good
position. We could do this.
I think there's someone up there
looking down on us.
If it was Nan's way, she'd be the
one that would be down here going,
"Just keep trying. Go on,
you can do it."
Is it in here?
With all the signs?
Oh, my word! Look at this.
Hello!
Just short of the border
with Nova Scotia,
Tricia and Cathie have reached
Shediac, famed for its seafood
and 90-tonne claim to the title
“largest lobster in the world...
You do the first bit with the claws.
With the claws. OK. So you do that
bit, and then I'll take over
when it comes to the tail
and twisting, yeah? The tail...
And then we're not talking
over each other.
OK, cool.
To continue filling
their war chest...
All right, ladies and gentlemen,
we've got some lobster for you.
...the best friends need
to rediscover their teamwork.
Our job today is to try and help
you crack open your lobster.
And get the most out of the meat.
Get the most out of it
with the least amount of mess.
You're going to just gently lift
the tail
and keep it on the plate.
No, don't do that. You will get
juice everywhere.
You'll get juice everywhere. So just
make it flat. The important thing
is to elongate the tail,
so pull the tail gently.
You can twist it... And then twist
from the body. That's exactly right.
Yeah, I keep butting in when she's
talking about things.
Um, I keep doing it.
Gently widen it. If you want to pull
off your leg. That's it.
Not your leg, but THE leg.
Yeah, that's it.
Because we're getting close
to the final,
we're both getting really, really
anxious about wanting to get there
and wanting to get there first, so
any little thing is now like,
"Oh, it's all wrong!"
It takes a bit of brute force,
but just so that you're opening
it out.
You can pull the chicken out of...
Chicken?
You can take the lobster
out of the knuckles with that.
There's no point in hanging
on to things that aren't important.
No.
Yeah, that's it. And if you
twist it...
Perfect. You've done this before,
haven't you?
No, it's my first time.
We have a moment of tension.
It's gone. Yeah. You know,
it's been and gone and, you know,
we talked about it and...
It's done. ..moving on.
Enjoy the rest of your meal. Yes.
We are having fun now.
We're back to us again.
And this leg has
been hugely successful
as far as finance is concerned.
And there's an added perk.
Oh, look at that!
And now we're in Nova Scotia.
Oh!
Their boss's father is visiting
his girlfriend in Truro,
so a free ride helps them become
the second team into Nova Scotia.
Bit of a storm brewing there,
isn't there?
And we're heading straight
towards it.
Almost 300km
in front of them...
Right, love, we're going to go
straight down over the bridge.
...Zainib and Mobeen have
reached Liverpool.
Watch. Watch your left,
watch your left.
"Make your way to the boat house
at White Point Beach Resort."
Sorry to bother you.
I'm trying to get to the boat house
at White Point Beach.
Where's your car now?
We don't have any cars.
You'll have to get a cab.
Are you able to take us there?
We'd be very grateful.
Sure. Thank you.
They're heading out of town
to the seventh checkpoint.
We need to race off now.
See you later!
OK. Let's get on the beach.
I have to say, it feels
a bit ominous. Sounds weird.
Can't see anything. Can't see shit.
As warm, moist inland air
is cooled by the chilly waters
of the Atlantic, it produces fog.
Look. It's nice, isn't it?
It's kind of scary, but nice.
The area experiences over 100
foggy days a year,
leading many a ship off course
and into danger.
Is that reception there?
Go on, do the honours.
Oh!
Hi. Hi there!
Welcome to White Point.
Made it! Would you like to sign
the book?
Yes!
How did we do that again?
That's how we roll.
We are in first
going into the last leg.
It's ours to lose.
Thank you so much. All right.
Have a great visit.
I think we've been extremely lucky
this leg.
Like, it feels like we've just
about caught each connection.
We're going to carry on
networking onwards.
It seems to work well.
Nice, eh?
I love this. Oh, love it.
I'm just... I'm wondering where the
others are and what they're doing.
It's almost like, hurry up,
where are you?
Can I have your attention,
please? We have some guests on today
and they could use your help getting
to Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
If you think you can be
of assistance,
you can come to reception.
Are you the party that's
going across Canada?
Yep.
I'm game.
Oh!
Crossing the Bay of Fundy,
Monique and Ladi have found
themselves a free ride
all the way to Liverpool.
I'm absolutely buzzing.
We're on the move.
Also on their way...
Yep, OK. Let's go.
...with yet another B&B owner coming
to their aid, Tricia and Cathie.
All right. We're on the road.
This is amazing, Bill.
This really is.
Are you heading
to Prince Edward Island?
No?
Despite more than doubling
their cash reserves at the brewery,
Claudia and Kevin
have just $178 left.
We've got a job
in Prince Edward Island.
The important thing is just to get
there today as cheaply as possible.
It's pretty bleak conditions
right now,
but we've just got
to do our best.
So they're striking out
for more work,
to Prince Edward Island,
across - at 12.9km -
Canada's longest bridge.
Let's hope someone's feeling
kind today.
Weather's getting worse now.
I am not prepared to give
this up yet.
We just need one punter
to come along. Just one.
It can all change on the flip
of a coin, can't it?
drenched.
Look, it's brightening up over
there now, so maybe another hour...
I've not got another hour in me.
Really?
I'm not giving up.
BEEPING
"Make your way to the boat house
at White Point Beach Resort."
Come on, Dad. It's close.
My Achilles is killing. If I run,
I'L snap it,
and then we won't have anything left
for the final leg.
For the two teams closing
in on the checkpoint...
I can't run. Give me the bag.
I'm with you.
...every second counts.
Did it say boat house?
It says...
Oh, God. It says...
I can't read it,
but it does say boat house.
Round there, I reckon.
What do you think?
I don't know. Cathie?
You're only as strong
as your weakest link.
It's OK, Dad.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Let's go.
Careful, this is quite rough.
I think it might be safer
to walk on the path.
Is the reception this way?
Oh, God.
We got this.
Here's reception.
And here's the book!
Good morning! Welcome to
White Point. Good morning!
Thank you.
OK. Oh, my God.
I hate this bit. You ready?
We've done the best. We've done the
absolute best we can. Everything.
Go on. Ready? Yeah.
Yeah! Yes! Yeah.
It feels amazing. It feels amazing
to get to the last leg second.
And with plenty of money. Yeah!
Thank you. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Wow. We might actually... Win this.
We might actually win.
Not too far behind Tricia
and Cathie,
but Zainib and Mobeen, they kept
their lead.
Anything can happen.
We're still in the game,
but we're not in the position
we want to be in. Bittersweet.
Earlier on in this leg, we thought
that we were out
budget-wise, time-wise, everything,
and then, all of a sudden, things
just clicked into gear
and clicked into place,
and we were contenders again.
I'm not too sure how the other
teams got on.
We didn't see Kevin and Claudia.
They could be in a position where
they're counting their coins,
not able to splash
the cash in the final round.
weather is shit.
Running out of options...
Yeah, there are no buses leaving
for two days,
so this is our only option.
Dad still wants to carry on,
but we've been at this for over six
and a half hours.
You never really want to give up in life
and you want to give everything your all,
but I think you always have
to weigh up
whether it's worth carrying on.
Going the other way.
That's all right. Thanks anyway.
This isn't the way it's
supposed to end.
Enough's enough now.
You sure this is what you want?
Yeah. Absolutely?
We had a really good day yesterday.
I just want to leave it at that.
Yeah, and I'll agree with
you on that.
We can't afford to carry on.
No.
We've done well. We've done
really well.
OK.
Honestly, we should be bloody proud
of ourselves.
Home.
And this is just the start
of the journey. It's not the end.
We've got a bloody long
way to go still.
I've never stopped loving
my daughter. Never.
And she feels
that I did stop loving her and...
...and that's my fault,
because I never told her.
We have made massive,
massive ground.
I've loved every minute of this.
The fact that I have spent
45 days with my daughter,
it's just been the best thing
I've done in all my life.
For me, the bigger picture
has always been about mine and Dad's
relationship and having that
opportunity to spend the time together.
This is the beginning of our
next race,
I guess, as father and daughter
and how our life continues.
It means nothing unless you
come first at the last leg.
After 15,000km,
eight provinces,
the finish line
and £20,000 is approaching.
I'm back! That's my girl.
We can do it. Whoa!
The whole race. Oh, Jesus...
Every decision has been made
with this leg in mind.
This is unreal. It's heating up!
has never been stronger.
But in travelling over,
are we missing the joys
of journeying through?
Canada, the second-largest country
in the world.
From Pacific to Atlantic Ocean -
flight time, seven hours.
But could you successfully navigate
this grueling
16,000-kilometre route
at ground level?
Five pairs of ordinary Brits
are attempting just that...
Come on! Run!
...in a demanding
and challenging race.
All I'm saying is, I'm going to die.
We're all going to die.
They'll head deep into the wild...
Who gets to do this?
...Cross vast prairies...
This is awesome! Road trip!
...soar high into the Rockies...
This is what dreams are bloody
made of, innit? All this vastness.
...to the very edges of civilisation.
We are heading into the unknown.
We can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
It's dark, raining,
got no money.
Honestly, this is awful.
Oh! I don't like this!
They'll need charm...
Parlez-vous anglais?
Mission accomplished.
...hard work...
We're haemorrhaging money.
We can claw the money back.
Yeah, we'll work.
...and ingenuity to get them through.
What a difference a day can make.
Oh, you're kidding me!
Have they got what it takes?
Oh, Dad! This is the hardest thing
I think I've done.
You know what's impressed me? You.
I really, really appreciate it.
I believe in you.
I know. I just don't believe in me.
I just cost us the race, Dad.
The rewards are great...
Mother Nature at her best.
Never seen anything like it.
...and for the first team to the
finish line, a prize of £20,000...
Every second counts.
...in a race...
If they come behind us now,
I'm taking the bag off you.
...across the world.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Seen enough or do you want
a bit more?
Previously...
Back in the land of the living!
...the teams reached
Canada's big cities.
It's bloody bedlam, innit?
So you just have a dig
for no reason?
A quarrelsome Zainib and Mobeen...
We decided we will pay
for your bus ticket.
Thank you so much!
...had a helping hand...
Does that mean you love me?
I've always loved you.
...to leapfrog from fourth to first.
Yes! Come on! We did it!
I think we should double-check
the ferry time. OK.
After missing the early boat...
We're now in last place.
...Monique kept her team in the fray.
We don't need to get accommodation.
We can just go straight through.
Tricia and Cathie's
best-laid plans faltered...
Can I just have... just
a minute of headspace?
...and they fell into last place...
Gutted. Gutted. Pants.
...but a bitter blow to
Claudia and Kevin's budget...
500 bucks on hotel rooms
just destroyed us.
...left them on the brink.
Claudia is... Yeah,
she's not in a good place.
I mean, she's ready to go.
This is a vibe that I like.
I feel like I'm on holiday.
Like, people, civilisation.
Yeah, being in a city's
kind of cool.
The sixth checkpoint
in the race across Canada
and a chance for the teams
to explore before they can move on.
I want to keep first place.
Do not want to let it go.
How are you feeling?
I don't want to say smug...
But smug.
With just two legs left to run,
Zainib and Mobeen are
top of the leader board
and the other teams have 12 hours
to make up.
We are the only ones
that haven't won a leg,
but it's not the final one,
so it don't matter!
We've learned from a lot of
our mistakes
and we're being more clever
in terms of our planning.
Have they peaked too early? Ooh!
That's what I'm saying.
It's disappointing to be fourth,
but it's only 20 minutes
behind second and third.
Well, there's only one way to go
now... Yeah, exactly.
...and that's up, whereas there's
a lot of room for people...
To go down! ..to come down.
But position in the race
isn't everything.
With precisely $551.55
of their budget left,
Claudia and Kevin are running
on fumes.
You know, there's not a lot
of money left in the wallet.
It's easy to hang up your clogs
and walk away,
but I don't want to go home
just yet.
I think we've just got into
the swing of it.
I'm just not sure
I want that to end yet.
I don't want it to end. And when
we go home, I don't want it to end.
Maybe we needed this crash course
in, you know,
being around each other
every minute of every day.
I think there's moments
of just sheer brilliance
between the two of us.
We got 550 bucks in the wallet.
We can eke out the next leg.
Hopefully, there's
a couple of opportunities for work.
I think we've got to give it a go.
So we're going to do this, yeah?
We're going to give this
one big last push?
I think we have to, until
we've run out of money, really.
11pm.
Hi! Hey.
We'd like to check out, please.
First to find out where
they'll be heading next,
Zainib and Mobeen.
I believe this is for you.
Ooh, thank you! Thank you!
Liverpool!
Don't want to go to Scouseland!
Why are they sending us there?
THEY LAUGH
I love it! I'm a Manc!
After starting their race 41 days
ago on Canada's Pacific Coast,
the teams now have the Atlantic
within their reach...
...1,100km from Quebec City, lapping
the shores of the seventh checkpoint
at the seaside town
of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
Somewhere around here... Here it is!
Yeah, there it is. Boom, boom!
Nova Scotia, New Scotland.
Nova Scotia,
along with New Brunswick
and Prince Edward Island,
forms the Maritimes, so called
for the huge role the ocean plays
in Canada's three smallest
provinces.
We've got 12 hours ahead of
everyone else, so it's ours to lose.
Let's go!
We're hitting the East Coast
now, so...
We keep hearing about
the hospitality,
so maybe we can use them...
- Use them and abuse them!
But so late in the day,
Zainib and Mobeen's options
out of town are limited.
Excuse me!
Hello, sorry to bother you.
There is a bus.
What time does it leave?
Tomorrow. 9.45.
It gives a chance to the other teams
to catch up, basically,
and make their moves.
I'm thinking of getting a hotel
and then get up early morning,
get on that bus tomorrow,
put ourselves ahead of the teams.
Here, get this open.
Let's have a look at what route
we are thinking,
so that we can get started
in the morning.
To reach Liverpool,
the teams could head inland
through New Brunswick's capital,
Fredericton, then catch a ferry
across the Bay of Fundy
to Nova Scotia.
Alternatively, they could navigate
the picturesque fishing towns
along New Brunswick's coast,
allowing them to cross
to Nova Scotia by land.
There is a job working with
a lady who owns hotels.
And it's a bed and board.
We really get to know the person
that we're working for
and then they do give us
a lot of help.
We can then decide what route
will be faster for us.
Planning an early start tomorrow,
Zainib and Mobeen aim to head along
New Brunswick's coast
for a job in Miramichi.
We've got the edge here.
We've raced smart and used
our personalities, I guess,
to know people. And a lot of people
have given us a lot of help.
It's awesome.
I want to go win this now.
If we make out an early exit
from Quebec City,
we keep our lead.
You think about it.
I'm going to bed.
Let's walk and drink.
Who's Zara? Me.
That's my Starbucks name.
Forget trying to spell out Zainib
to them!
9.45am.
So can I please book two tickets
going to Rimouski
this morning at...?
9.45 this morning? Yeah. Perfect.
Are there any other buses
later in the day?
At 2.00. OK.
Thank you.
2pm. That's ages away!
So that means we put ourselves
five hours ahead
of whichever team wants to get on
that bus, which is good to know.
Thank you. Mereci!
On the first available bus
out of town,
Zainib and Mobeen are on their way
to Rimouski,
looking to head into New Brunswick
from there.
It's good to know that we're ahead
of the other teams.
I've just got to go remind myself -
we went from fourth to first,
we can easily go from first to last.
Morning! Morning. Morning!
Next to depart...
There it is... Liverpool!
..Liverpool.
...the two teams in second place,
neck and neck.
Well, it's been nice, guys.
Good luck. Good luck.
See you at the next checkpoint!
Right. Ready for this? Yep.
We've got $550 left in the budget.
We have to get a job and earn money,
so that dictates our route.
We could do the brewing job...
Right. ..which is guaranteed work.
So, Picaroons Brewing Company,
Fredericton.
Aiming to scrape together
enough cash
to get them through
the final two legs,
Claudia and Kevin are heading inland
to a job in Fredericton.
First things first, we need to
pick up some supplies. Yeah.
Look at that. Look at the price
of that! Bloody hell!
Now that we've only got two
legs to go,
I just want to go
the most direct route...
Yeah, same here. ..because we need
to be first or second. Yep.
Yeah, so what do you think
could be quicker?
It could do that.
It could do that.
Or it could do that as well.
I don't think we should
get bogged down on it.
What are you thinking, Dad?
I'm just thinking
we need to make a choice
cos we're wasting time now.
It's a tricky one.
We're struggling.
We know that
we need to get on with it!
Look at the bloody length on that!
While two teams dither...
It's got to the point where
I've actually been measuring out
the grams and what you get
per penny.
Let's just go back to
the bus station
and we'll find out
information there.
...already at the bus station...
Can you help us, please?
...last to leave the checkpoint,
Tricia and Cathie.
We are trying to get
to New Brunswick.
Towards that...
There's one going to Rimouski...
OK. ..this afternoon at 2.00.
OK. Two tickets.
It's $150.51. OK.
You're going to be the last persons.
So we're getting the last tickets
on this bus?
We may see other teams,
but who knows?
So we need to get our tickets now.
Bonjour! Bonjour! Parlez-vous
anglais, s'il vous plait?
Yes. Yes? I do. Hello!
We're trying to get to, eventually,
Liverpool in Nova Scotia.
There's only one bus.
It's leaving at 2.00,
but there's no more room.
So we'd have to wait until tomorrow
to get... Tomorrow morning. OK.
Bonjour.
Bonjour.
Riviere-du-Loup... Yeah.
There's no more room until tomorrow.
Really? It's at 9.45.
In the morning?
What a bummer!
Despite leaving the checkpoint
20 minutes after the others,
Tricia and Cathie secure the only
tickets on the last bus out of town
towards New Brunswick.
Hey, you. You all right?
How did we get here, like,
quicker than them? I don't know.
Maybe we spent too long planning.
I don't know.
At the minute, it looks like we're
in second place. We've just gone...
Yeah.
Oh, here's our bus.
Oh, here's our bus!
Should we go and wave them goodbye?
No! Absolutely not!
That's horrible.
But quite funny. No!
Stop it!
I feel awful, but I don't.
I don't. Sorry, but I don't.
Also travelling to Rimouski
four and a quarter hours
after Zainib and Mobeen...
There's a job in Miramichi.
And then coming down to Shediac.
Yeah, there's jobs available there.
...the best friends are planning
to fit in two jobs
before reaching Nova Scotia.
I think that's a really
good route, actually.
We've talked about strategy.
We're going to build up our money
so that, in the last leg,
we can just go.
So what are our options here?
For the two teams left behind
in Quebec City...
So we can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
HE CHUCKLES
We're !
It's a negative situation
that we're in.
I mean, I can be positive
and be like,
"Yeah, I hope we get a lift."
But hope's not guaranteed, is it?
The next few hours are crucial
because we need to get out
of here tonight.
If we don't get out of here,
we'd just be out of the race
with a load of money.
Alternatively, we can spend money
and try to continue.
You can't get back time,
you CAN earn money.
Parlez-vous anglais?
Yes.
We need to get to Riviere-du-Loup.
How much?
400.
Can you do it any less than that?
Cos we're on a very tight budget.
OK, give me 340...
3407340. Fine.
340. Fine. Yeah, let's go.
Forking out 18% of their remaining
budget,
Monique and Ladi are on their way
to Riviere-du-Loup,
over 100 kilometres shy of
where a bus could have taken them.
We don't know about onward travel
from there,
but it's a risk that
we've had to take.
And I guess we just hope
it pays off.
Bonjour! Excusez-moi. OK.
We are travelling to Fredericton.
Yes. We're trying to car-share
out of town.
With the cost of a taxi
out of the question...
So you have to walk to the ferry...
Yep.
...cross the river with the ferry
to Levis...
To Levis? Levis, on the other side.
OK. Thank you.
Merci beaucoup. Thank you.
...Claudia and Kevin take a gamble...
Right, 15.40 for the both of you.
And that's for a return, both ways?
Yes, exactly, back and forth.
Do you want to take the risk?
We're hoping that we're going to
get a lift... Just a single.
So just two singles, please,
to go over.
...the price of ferry tickets
on finding a ride,
across the St Lawrence River
and the town of Levis.
We don't want to be coming back
through this tunnel.
Yeah, I think those
that are coming on cars
have parked in the car park there
and they just then just come onto
the roll-on/roll-off ferry, innit?
We need to just get off the ferry
before the cars get off the boat.
It's quite lovely out here!
Almost 500 kilometres away...
It's quite warm as well,
even though it's windy.
...Zainib and Mobeen have entered
their seventh province,
New Brunswick - the only one
that's officially bilingual,
with English and French
spoken interchangeably.
After catching their second bus
of the day,
husband and wife have
reached Campbellton...
We're not doing a paid job, so
I'm a bit worried for the finances
now on this leg.
...stretching their lead...
It's so bad, but the thought of
actually shoplifting
has crossed my mind.
What has it boiled down to?
...and looking to stretch
their budget.
How much are your bruised,
black bananas?
If you need to get rid of
anything... You guys can have them.
Thanks!
Yeah, we're not going to
sell them, anyway.
You guys can have a drink
from the fountain, if you want.
We can have a drink as well?
From the fountain? Yeah, yeah.
Thanks, man.
Every little helps, man.
I've got no shame now!
I've become a tramp.
Total, utter tramp!
This is a lot of Canada Dry.
Right. That's all the cars
gone, then.
I think it's going to be the bus
tomorrow morning, Dad. Yep.
In Levis, Claudia and Kevin's bid
to kick-start their leg
has gone nowhere.
We're just going to get the ferry
back tonight,
stay there and get the bus
in the morning.
There's Quebec. This is Levis.
It's not touristy this side,
so it's going to be cheaper.
We just can't afford to stay
in Quebec this evening.
So, effectively, we're now looking
on the other side of the river,
in Levis. We can get the 9.00 ferry
across the river to Quebec again.
At least we know we've got a bus
out of here tomorrow morning.
Having spent $7.70 to get here,
they're ten kilometres further away
from where they need to be -
back in Quebec City, to catch
tomorrow's bus out of town.
What a day! What are we left with,
2107 I didn't count all the change.
Oh. we'll have about $220,
probably. OK.
Thank God for microwave pot noodles.
I know! $1.79. Oh!
It's a bargain, innit?
It's quite spicy.
Bonjour! Ah, bonjour!
After spending the night
in Rimouski...
Ooh, look at this!
Oh, look at this!
What a beautiful car! Yeah!
...Tricia and Cathie have persuaded
hostel owner Paul
to drive them to a nearby town...
Your ride is OK? My car is...
Very, very nice. Yeah?
It is so beautiful.
...from there, aiming to find
onward transport south.
So we're heading down to Miramichi.
Maybe I drive you directly...
Oh, thank you! Thank you!
Two hours more. Oh!
We're feeling really good
this morning.
I think Tricia and I,
being a pair of females,
probably have an advantage
being picked up.
We are the old ladies of the group.
That means we might actually
have jumped everybody
and started into first now.
I know, we might...! Ooh!
Oh, my goodness!
I think you have
the lucky day today.
It's definitely a lucky day.
200 kilometres behind...
Bonjour!
- Sorry.
Oh.
OK.
Outright no, but...
HE SIGHS
...after their taxi spend yesterday,
Monique and Ladi are also
looking for a lift.
Oh. OK.
I'm not going to kill you
or mug you. Damn!
Bonjour! Pardon?
Oh, you know what, !
Do you know, I hate doing this,
and I'm going to say it -
we have a very different experience
standing in a garage
based on any of
the other competitors.
Like, just plain, simple fact -
we do.
I don't enjoy doing this.
I already have preconceived ideas
about the way we look
versus other people in the back
of my head. And it's not nice.
I don't enjoy hitchhiking.
Although me and Dad have lucked out
many a time when it comes to asking
for lifts, there's many times where
you feel... unwelcome or unwanted.
Parlez-vous anglais?
Francais.
OK.
Wow.
Wow, wow, wow, wow!
If I was at home, if I've ever
been in a situation where I felt
I've been judged, I wouldn't
put myself in that position again,
whereas in this journey, you're
still having to put yourselves
in those positions.
It's just not a nice feeling.
So, yeah.
Monique, I feel you all the way.
You just have to keep on
trying and hoping.
Having Monique have to go through
this doesn't fill me with joy.
You want to protect your children
from the harms of this world
as much as you possibly can.
But this is an experience
that we're both going through,
and it's good that she isn't
doing this alone.
Bonjour! Er...
Parlez-vous anglais?
I'm an English guy.
Ah! Bro!
What's up?
Me and my daughter are trying to get
a lift over to Fredericton.
Are you going in that direction?
Yeah, I'm going that direction.
Can you give us a lift there?
Of course, without saying so!
I'm just going to get the gas and
then I think I will bring you guys.
It'll be wickedly appreciated,
my friend. No problem.
How you find yourself up in Canada?
Just following my dreams, bro.
Yeah, yeah, I hear that.
I hear that.
And straight from Jamaica?
Straight from Jamaica.
Oh! I've got family in Jamaica.
My daughter is half-Jamaica.
I'm Nigerian, but my partner
is from Jamaica.
I give it five minutes
before Dad mentions he's got
a jerk pan at home,
if he hasn't already mentioned it.
Oh, my days!
Back in the running,
father and daughter have a ride
of 273 kilometres to Fredericton.
So, this is the ultimate
question now. Right.
Do you have a jerk pan in your yard?
Me have a jerk pan in my yard!
Took you 20 minutes.
What, it took me 20 minutes
to talk about jerk? Yep!
Yeah! Because he loves it!
Exactly! It makes the world
go round.
It's a must. That's it.
Jerk pork... Yeah. ..jerk chicken,
roast fish. Right.
Yeah, man! Dad's not even Jamaican!
No, it's the twang.
It comes out when he's jerking
sometimes, the twang,
or when you bump into Jamaican
people in a truck in Canada!
That's when I put my applewood
on there,
so I get enough of the smoke
that comes with the applewood...
Because of the smoke!
Yeah! Yeah, man!
If there's one thing that I do know,
it's everywhere that I go
in the world,
I always buck up with a Jamaican...
Yeah.
...and I always buck up with
a Nigerian. Nigerian, yeah.
It's comforting. Yeah.
I must admit, you have really
made my trip to Canada now.
THEY LAUGH
250 kilometres closer
to the checkpoint...
I've got to clean
the chairs!
Having reached the picturesque
fishing town of Miramichi,
Zainib and Mobeen are straight down
to business...
It's not the most pleasant,
but in return for a meal
and somewhere decent to sleep,
it's worth it, in my opinion.
...hoping their boss, Mrs Pershad,
will make an appearance.
So where does Mrs Pershad live,
then?
She currently resides in Moncton.
So does she drive out
to Moncton herself? Yes.
Moncton is on Zainib and Mobeen's
route south.
I was just wondering if she could
give us a lift tomorrow,
if she's going to be here.
We can always ask, can't we?
Absolutely. You don't ask,
you don't get.
That's what we've learnt.
Bed and board options usually mean
that you're hanging around people
for a lot longer, and I think
that gives us a chance
to really get to know them
and them a chance to get to know us,
so that we can then -
in the nicest way - use them.
Hello! Mrs Pershad!
Hello! How are you?
I'm doing good, thank you.
Nice to meet you. I would like
you all to join us for supper.
Let's do it. Excellent, yeah!
You got it? Oh, wow. Amazing!
Smells so good.
I really hope that you'll enjoy it.
Thank you so much.
Originally from India, Mrs Pershad
emigrated to Canada 40 years ago.
I came as a new bride.
It was an arranged marriage.
And after coming out of the flight,
my sari was flying everywhere!
You came off that plane
with a sari?
Like, I'd be too afraid to do that.
It takes a little bit of courage...
Of course! ..to stand out...
Yeah. ..different...
What I received living here
in Miramichi
was beyond my expectation.
This has all been so nice.
The food has been amazing.
Honestly, I've not had a biryani
since we left,
and I've missed it massively.
Pleasure was all mine.
We need to get to Truro,
past Moncton.
If you're willing to cramp up, I can
take you back tomorrow with me!
So that actually works perfect
for us.
Moncton sorted!
So... we have just got the most
fabulous options available to us...
Too many to choose from!
..the first of which is nothing...
...and the other option
is car sharing.
Having finally caught the bus
out of Quebec City this morning...
I don't suppose you're going
this way, by any chance,
New Brunswick?
No. No? OK.
...Claudia and Kevin are still close
to 400 kilometres away
from Fredericton, where they plan
to resuscitate their finances.
Should we just get a slushy?
I've starved myself for weeks...
...and you're on about
getting a slushy?
It is draining, not having any money
and trying to get a lift
from other people and
ask for free stuff.
It's hard. It really is.
Just been another long five hours of
trying to car-share this afternoon.
Bottom line is this -
we've got pocket change
and a few notes at the moment.
We are living on the bones
of our arse.
If we get to the point of
no money tomorrow
and we can't make it to the job,
then tomorrow is the final day.
But I really would like
to get to the sea,
just to say that I've got there -
from saltwater to saltwater -
to see it through to the bitter end,
knowing that we gave it
every potential shot that
we possibly could do.
it, let's have fun.
Let's have an ice cream.
We've lasted 43 days
without buying an ice cream.
Yeah, it,
let's have an ice cream.
I want a Cornetto with nuts on it.
Just outside of Miramichi...
Lovely to meet you. Yeah,
lovely to meet you guys too!
We're going to be the crew here,
helping with the tepees here...
Amazing! Brilliant.
OK. Let's do this.
...one of the oldest continuously
inhabited indigenous settlements
in Canada. In summer, visitors
are able to stay here,
to experience what life was like for
the Mi'kmaq people centuries ago.
One, two, three!
Keep going your side, Cathie.
Helping the local Mi'kmaq youth
get the site prepared,
young-at-heart Tricia and Cathie.
Ow, ow!
It's really good fun,
putting up the tepee.
That's it.
And what's even more exciting
is that, tonight,
we'll be able to spend the night
in it. And we're being fed.
That's helped our budget enormously.
So, we need to turn these round
a hit.
Hang on a sec.
Tricia, I think it's OK.
Tricia just loves to be involved.
I just let her get on with it.
Right, hang on, hang on, hang on.
I haven't got my foot right.
I've just got it.
I'm just holding it.
I'm more likely to sort of
stand back and wait.
It's just how we're different.
Is there anything I can help with?
No, love.
You sure? Yeah, yeah.
I'm just craving some time
without anybody around.
Yeah, I think she's a bit pissed off
with me today
and needs a bit of time on her own,
which I understand.
Shall I just roll this so that
it doesn't get tangled over here?
Will that help?
Not really. OK.
I'm doing OK, love. OK.
I love spending time with Trish,
we have such a laugh, but when
you're with someone 24 hours a day,
you know, you're bound to have
a moment where you just think,
"All right, do you know what?
Just give me a bit of space!”
Closer to town...
Hello, Mrs Pershad!
Hi, good morning! How are you?
We're fine.
...Zainib and Mobeen's lift
with Mrs Pershad
will take them to Moncton.
You know the rafting experience
that we're doing,
it all depends on the tide
of the water.
But they have their eyes focused
187 kilometres beyond there,
near the town of Truro, Nova Scotia.
Later today,
an unmissable opportunity.
During high tide
in the Bay of Fundy,
large volumes of water will funnel
through a narrow inlet
to create a huge tidal bore
that the couple hope to raft.
Their trips start at 5pm.
Give me about 40 minutes
and we are ready to go.
That would be amazing.
Thank you, Mrs Pershad.
Thank you so much.
Race hard and have some fun.
Pfft.
I'm just waiting for Terry
to come back. OK.
And as soon as he comes,
we're ready to go. Perfect.
OK? OK, thank you.
When she said 40, I didn't
think it would be 40.
To catch it, they'll need to cover
over 300km in four hours.
I hope she knows how to put
the pedal to the metal.
Almost 300km behind
the leading teams,
Claudia and Kevin's search for a
ride to Fredericton
began 22 hours ago.
Right now, we can't afford
a hotel for accommodation. No.
The important thing for us is to get
to Fredericton as soon as possible.
If we can do that by lunchtime,
I mean, it's happy days.
You guys are going to Fredricton?
We are. Are you going there?
My name's Amber. I'll take you.
What? Really?
I will, yeah. Oh, my God!
I'm planning on opening my shop.
My shop's right down the road.
Then we can take off. OK.
Yeah, that'd be amazing.
Do you want to do that? Yeah.
Brilliant. Absolutely. Awesome.
I'm Kev, by the way. This is my
daughter, Claudia. Yeah, Amber, sorry.
Nice to meet me.
Pleased to meet you.
I love what you guys are doing.
I couldn't.
I don't have the balls to, but...
I'm sure you do!
My shop's right here.
It's not far. Oh, cool.
Take a look around. If you have any
questions, let me know.
I won't be long.
How bizarre!
We're in a cannabis shop.
Recreational use of cannabis
has been legal in Canada since 2018.
Is it your first
time in a cannabis shop?
Yeah, absolutely. Obviously in the
UK, cannabis is illegal.
Completely illegal?
Completely.
It's just bizarre it's in, like,
some sort of sweet jars.
Yeah.
Can I take a photograph?
Yeah, go right ahead.
You've even got cannabis lip gloss!
What?!
Did you guys eat this morning?
We're OK. We've had a cereal bowl.
You OK?
I'll buy you breakfast if you want.
We can't ask that. You're already
doing us a massive favour.
I'm offering. You didn't ask,
I offered. There's a difference. OK.
We can... We can accept an offer.
OK. Yeah.
We'll pick up some breakfast
on the way, then.
It's hot!
Oh!
OK. Al right, ready to roll?
Absolutely.
What a difference a day makes.
To basically running down our
budget,
now I'm eating bagel with bacon,
egqg, cheese. Beautiful.
Obviously it was meant to be that
we're supposed to carry on, Dad.
Can't give up yet.
Claudia and Kevin are finally
on their way
to pick up some much-needed work.
If this is the map of Canada,
how would you say your journey...?
Like, up and down? Yeah.
OK. Wow.
Emotionally, mentally, and actually
physically up and down.
Well said. Well said.
I admire that a lot.
You have no idea.
I knew my father
for two years of my life.
I haven't talked to him since I was
pregnant with my first,
but you are very lucky to be able
to do that with your dad.
I'm jealous on that one,
I can't lie.
I wish I would have done something like
that with my mom, may she rest in peace.
She passed away about a year
and a half ago.
At least you can try and do
something like that with your girls.
Oh, yeah. Oh, I'm going to cry...
Oh, I'm sorry.
I just don't want to cry and drive.
I'm happy. I'm kind of happy to be,
like, a little drop in the water
and be part of it, you know?
Yeah, awesome.
Already in Fredericton...
This is so nice, Dad.
Yeah, I know it is.
...Monique and Ladi kill time
before their onward journey.
Sitting down, enjoying the sun.
Imagine having a jerk pan
out here now.
Bisected by the Saint John River,
the capital of New Brunswick
is a cultural hotbed of theatres,
art galleries and museums.
Monique and her dad, however,
have opted
for the white sand
beaches of Killarney Lake.
Are you coming on a road trip
again with me
when this is over and done with?
I'd fly somewhere.
All right.
As much as I could spend another
hour here,
you know we're going to have
to go soon.
I thought I had meat on my butt
and whenever I ride a bike,
I'm reminded how much
of a pancake batty I have.
I can feel it in my bones.
Blame your mum!
Departing at 6:20pm,
the bus to Saint John.
Are we going the right way, Dad?
From there, they will be able
to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia.
Excuse me, sir. Yeah?
I'm wondering whether you can help.
Do you know about the ferries that
go from Saint John to Digby? Yeah.
The ferry leaves Saint John
at 8am.
OK. And arrives in Digby at 2:15.
I believe it's roughly $120
per person.
OK.
So far this leg we've spent $646.60.
So worried about the budget,
considering we hadn't worked this
leg, so...
Do you know of anyone in Saint John
that may be looking for someone
to help them work?
Let me send a few messages and see.
I have a few friends
that own pizza places.
Oh, that would be brilliant.
Thank you so much.
We can do anything -
cleaning, cooking.
We've done it all.
One o'clock tomorrow?
OK. Perfect.
Yeah, so one o'clock tomorrow
at the Tipsy Tomato,
and you can work until 8:00
or 9:00 at night.
Oh, my God.
You're an absolute godsend!
Thank you so much.
I'm excited now.
I've never worked
in a pizza restaurant.
I'll tell you what, though. When
lockdown hit, I applied for Domino's
cos I thought, "I can drive
and I like pizza."
I didn't get accepted, though.
Thank you so much. It's been a
pleasure to spend time with you.
Are you heading towards Truro,
by any chance?
No.
Argh.
Mrs Pershad has dropped Zainib
and Mobeen 140km away
from catching the tidal bore.
Excuse me. Do you know how far Truro
is from here?
Probably about an hour from Truro.
Yeah?
Are you heading that way,
by any chance?
I'm heading for Halifax, so, yes.
Oh, my gosh. Could you drop us off?
That's not a problem, actually.
If you'll just let me go
to the bathroom, I'll come right
back. Yeah, please.
That would be amazing.
Sounds like we've got a ride.
We're going to get
you there. Don't worry.
And welcome to Nova Scotia.
Oh, nice! We made it.
Zainib and Mobeen clock
up their eighth province.
Almost entirely surrounded by sea,
Nova Scotia's history and daily
life is inextricably bound
to the Atlantic Ocean,
embodied by the 160 lighthouses
guarding its coast.
Where the hell is this place?
Guys, I think we're going
the wrong way.
Keep putting this address
in, it keeps changing.
The highest tide in the world fills
the Bay of Fundy
with billions of tonnes of water.
Back to Truro, Andrea.
Yeah, bite my head off.
Well, I'm sorry, but...
No, it's not your fault, Andrea.
Sorry. It's not me, it's the
navigation. I'm aware it's not my fault.
No, it's not yours.
I'm going back the way we came.
Yeah.
I'm pretty good at doing that.
Don't want you guys to have a fight.
Are you kidding?
How many fights is that today?
Oh, look, you can see people
on their boats there.
Oh, my gosh. We made it.
You're going to feel like I'm
rushing you. That's fine.
Time and tide wait for no-one. We had to send our
crew out, so we're going to get you up to them,
but this is going to be fast
and furious. OK. Awesome. Let's go.
That's awesome.
That's how we do it. That's how we
do it.
Oh, yeah, that's quite fast.
It didn't feel like we were
going to make it
and I'm so happy
that we're here now.
There we go.
Whoa!
Oh, yeah!
Oh! Agh!
Whoa, we're going to sink, mate.
Unsinkable! Just like Titanic!
Oh, shit! I was gone then!
I nearly went!
Incredible.
Oh, my days!
After everything that we've been
through today, that was worth it.
When we were in those big waves
and it filled up,
I thought he'd sunk the boat.
That was pretty epic,
so for me to say that I enjoyed it
means that I REALLY enjoyed it.
Not only was it fun,
but it means that we get
into checkpoint tomorrow.
If it's OK, on me, like, I'll pay
for the hotel
for a night for you guys.
You can't do that. You...
That's too kind.
No, no, no, no.
Like, it's just...
It's the least I can do.
This doesn't happen in real life,
does it? No!
Courtesy of Amber, Claudia and Kevin
have reached Fredericton...
You guys are good to check in
whenever you want.
It's already paid. Oh... Brilliant.
...with a place to stay tonight
and $94.35 left in their pockets.
It's been a really hard week
and I think, like,
it's just really hit us,
what we're actually doing.
We've got no money and...
VOICE BREAKS
And then out of the blue, this...
...godlike creature comes in, sweeps
us off our feet, packs us into her car.
Wasn't going to go today,
but she thought, ", I'll give
you a lift anyway."
And here we are in Fredericton,
outside the brewery,
ready to go in and do a bit of work.
I mean, how does that happen?
Thank you so much. No, thank you,
guys. It was a pleasure to meet you.
I had such a ball, such a...
Random adventures are the best.
I love helping people and...
...I lost my mom...
...so to see, like, parent and child
doing something like this...
Awesome. Thanks very much indeed.
Ciao. Thanking you! Have a good one.
...I want to support it as much as I
can, cos we're not all that lucky.
I think there is one person
in a million like Amber.
It's like a bloody sauna in here.
Oh. Bloody net!
Ooh, my...
Pt!
What am I doing?
I need Velcro or something.
Just on my mouth!
Take one corner,
take the other corner.
It will collapse.
Having also spent the night
under canvas...
...Monique and Ladi are in
the bustling port of Saint John,
the gateway to Nova Scotia.
Hi. We was in contact with Steve
and he said that you guys
may have a shift for us today.
Absolutely.
But before they can jump
on a ferry...
Red, Radler... Oh!
Red, Radler.
So, we have the Red and the Radler.
Awesome, thank you. Thank you.
The ferry's not until
tomorrow morning.
We want to make sure our budget's
as healthy as possible
going into the last leg.
Thanks for waiting.
What's your feeling about
clam pizzas?
Dad loves working behind the bar
because he just gets to talk
to everyone.
He's chatting to people now.
Travelling across Canada
and just happened to pick up a shift
here today.
And that will help us on our budget
on our way,
because we've got a limited budget.
The important thing is
are you having any fun?
Oh, yeah, most definitely
having fun.
Canada's a great place.
There you go. Thank you. Enjoy.
Thank you, Phillip. Appreciate it.
Phillip, who I met inside the bar
and I was talking to,
he's just bought us a punnet
of strawberries.
Aw! That's so nice!
I know. How lovely! It's just
like, wow.
Gestures of kindness
are always overwhelming...
...in particular when it comes
from places that you don't expect...
...where you have experienced
some extreme hardships.
They mean a lot.
So tomorrow we just need
to be up at the crack,
get to that ferry terminal.
There's no way
that we're missing that.
Already in Nova Scotia...
I hope there's a bus.
I really hope there's a bus.
Hi, me and my wife are trying
to get to Liverpool.
Is there anything that goes today?
The closest I could get
you would be to Halifax today.
OK.
...Zainib and Mobeen have the seventh
checkpoint in their sights.
I only have enough space
for one more person on my bus.
Oh! Oh, God.
Has everyone checked in, though?
Can we be put on, like,
the wait list?
Um, I don't have a wait list.
I just have to wait for them
to arrive. To come.
If it wasn't raining like it is,
I would be willing to give
hitchhiking a go.
But it's miserable outside.
It looks pretty full.
Yeah, it looks rammed.
They're just doing the final
count now. OK. Thank you.
Please.
If we don't get this bus, it might
give the others a chance
to either catch up or overtake.
Yes, there are two seats available.
Thank you so much, guys.
Just 227km now
stand between them...
You are a life-saver, sir.
Thanks. Thank you so much, sir.
Thank you so much.
...and the checkpoint in Liverpool.
Close call. I think that's the
summary of our whole trip so far.
We've been taking chances
and it's been paying off.
I could do this all day!
Before Claudia and Kevin can focus
on the checkpoint,
finally, an opportunity
to resurrect their budget.
This is getting me one step
closer to saltwater.
That's what it all boils down to.
For ex-publican Kevin,
a bus man's holiday.
I'm quite enjoying it as well.
Fredericton is home to two
university campuses.
Keeping the students happy -
one of the highest number
of taprooms per head in Canada.
I think your dad's sweating
a bit on the other end.
Love it. Yeah? Make him work for it.
You might need to give him a hand.
Yeah?
Yeah. He's getting behind
a little bit. OK.
Pack these up, and that should be it
for the shift.
Getting dizzy now.
Here you go.
Cheers, guys. Cheers. Cheers.
Ah!
What a difference a day can make.
I went through a phase yesterday
of wondering if...
...if that was it.
But I didn't want to give up.
If it went the wrong way,
we could have been skint last night.
And I think tonight I can sleep
safe in my bed
knowing that we're in a good
position. We could do this.
I think there's someone up there
looking down on us.
If it was Nan's way, she'd be the
one that would be down here going,
"Just keep trying. Go on,
you can do it."
Is it in here?
With all the signs?
Oh, my word! Look at this.
Hello!
Just short of the border
with Nova Scotia,
Tricia and Cathie have reached
Shediac, famed for its seafood
and 90-tonne claim to the title
“largest lobster in the world...
You do the first bit with the claws.
With the claws. OK. So you do that
bit, and then I'll take over
when it comes to the tail
and twisting, yeah? The tail...
And then we're not talking
over each other.
OK, cool.
To continue filling
their war chest...
All right, ladies and gentlemen,
we've got some lobster for you.
...the best friends need
to rediscover their teamwork.
Our job today is to try and help
you crack open your lobster.
And get the most out of the meat.
Get the most out of it
with the least amount of mess.
You're going to just gently lift
the tail
and keep it on the plate.
No, don't do that. You will get
juice everywhere.
You'll get juice everywhere. So just
make it flat. The important thing
is to elongate the tail,
so pull the tail gently.
You can twist it... And then twist
from the body. That's exactly right.
Yeah, I keep butting in when she's
talking about things.
Um, I keep doing it.
Gently widen it. If you want to pull
off your leg. That's it.
Not your leg, but THE leg.
Yeah, that's it.
Because we're getting close
to the final,
we're both getting really, really
anxious about wanting to get there
and wanting to get there first, so
any little thing is now like,
"Oh, it's all wrong!"
It takes a bit of brute force,
but just so that you're opening
it out.
You can pull the chicken out of...
Chicken?
You can take the lobster
out of the knuckles with that.
There's no point in hanging
on to things that aren't important.
No.
Yeah, that's it. And if you
twist it...
Perfect. You've done this before,
haven't you?
No, it's my first time.
We have a moment of tension.
It's gone. Yeah. You know,
it's been and gone and, you know,
we talked about it and...
It's done. ..moving on.
Enjoy the rest of your meal. Yes.
We are having fun now.
We're back to us again.
And this leg has
been hugely successful
as far as finance is concerned.
And there's an added perk.
Oh, look at that!
And now we're in Nova Scotia.
Oh!
Their boss's father is visiting
his girlfriend in Truro,
so a free ride helps them become
the second team into Nova Scotia.
Bit of a storm brewing there,
isn't there?
And we're heading straight
towards it.
Almost 300km
in front of them...
Right, love, we're going to go
straight down over the bridge.
...Zainib and Mobeen have
reached Liverpool.
Watch. Watch your left,
watch your left.
"Make your way to the boat house
at White Point Beach Resort."
Sorry to bother you.
I'm trying to get to the boat house
at White Point Beach.
Where's your car now?
We don't have any cars.
You'll have to get a cab.
Are you able to take us there?
We'd be very grateful.
Sure. Thank you.
They're heading out of town
to the seventh checkpoint.
We need to race off now.
See you later!
OK. Let's get on the beach.
I have to say, it feels
a bit ominous. Sounds weird.
Can't see anything. Can't see shit.
As warm, moist inland air
is cooled by the chilly waters
of the Atlantic, it produces fog.
Look. It's nice, isn't it?
It's kind of scary, but nice.
The area experiences over 100
foggy days a year,
leading many a ship off course
and into danger.
Is that reception there?
Go on, do the honours.
Oh!
Hi. Hi there!
Welcome to White Point.
Made it! Would you like to sign
the book?
Yes!
How did we do that again?
That's how we roll.
We are in first
going into the last leg.
It's ours to lose.
Thank you so much. All right.
Have a great visit.
I think we've been extremely lucky
this leg.
Like, it feels like we've just
about caught each connection.
We're going to carry on
networking onwards.
It seems to work well.
Nice, eh?
I love this. Oh, love it.
I'm just... I'm wondering where the
others are and what they're doing.
It's almost like, hurry up,
where are you?
Can I have your attention,
please? We have some guests on today
and they could use your help getting
to Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
If you think you can be
of assistance,
you can come to reception.
Are you the party that's
going across Canada?
Yep.
I'm game.
Oh!
Crossing the Bay of Fundy,
Monique and Ladi have found
themselves a free ride
all the way to Liverpool.
I'm absolutely buzzing.
We're on the move.
Also on their way...
Yep, OK. Let's go.
...with yet another B&B owner coming
to their aid, Tricia and Cathie.
All right. We're on the road.
This is amazing, Bill.
This really is.
Are you heading
to Prince Edward Island?
No?
Despite more than doubling
their cash reserves at the brewery,
Claudia and Kevin
have just $178 left.
We've got a job
in Prince Edward Island.
The important thing is just to get
there today as cheaply as possible.
It's pretty bleak conditions
right now,
but we've just got
to do our best.
So they're striking out
for more work,
to Prince Edward Island,
across - at 12.9km -
Canada's longest bridge.
Let's hope someone's feeling
kind today.
Weather's getting worse now.
I am not prepared to give
this up yet.
We just need one punter
to come along. Just one.
It can all change on the flip
of a coin, can't it?
drenched.
Look, it's brightening up over
there now, so maybe another hour...
I've not got another hour in me.
Really?
I'm not giving up.
BEEPING
"Make your way to the boat house
at White Point Beach Resort."
Come on, Dad. It's close.
My Achilles is killing. If I run,
I'L snap it,
and then we won't have anything left
for the final leg.
For the two teams closing
in on the checkpoint...
I can't run. Give me the bag.
I'm with you.
...every second counts.
Did it say boat house?
It says...
Oh, God. It says...
I can't read it,
but it does say boat house.
Round there, I reckon.
What do you think?
I don't know. Cathie?
You're only as strong
as your weakest link.
It's OK, Dad.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Let's go.
Careful, this is quite rough.
I think it might be safer
to walk on the path.
Is the reception this way?
Oh, God.
We got this.
Here's reception.
And here's the book!
Good morning! Welcome to
White Point. Good morning!
Thank you.
OK. Oh, my God.
I hate this bit. You ready?
We've done the best. We've done the
absolute best we can. Everything.
Go on. Ready? Yeah.
Yeah! Yes! Yeah.
It feels amazing. It feels amazing
to get to the last leg second.
And with plenty of money. Yeah!
Thank you. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Wow. We might actually... Win this.
We might actually win.
Not too far behind Tricia
and Cathie,
but Zainib and Mobeen, they kept
their lead.
Anything can happen.
We're still in the game,
but we're not in the position
we want to be in. Bittersweet.
Earlier on in this leg, we thought
that we were out
budget-wise, time-wise, everything,
and then, all of a sudden, things
just clicked into gear
and clicked into place,
and we were contenders again.
I'm not too sure how the other
teams got on.
We didn't see Kevin and Claudia.
They could be in a position where
they're counting their coins,
not able to splash
the cash in the final round.
weather is shit.
Running out of options...
Yeah, there are no buses leaving
for two days,
so this is our only option.
Dad still wants to carry on,
but we've been at this for over six
and a half hours.
You never really want to give up in life
and you want to give everything your all,
but I think you always have
to weigh up
whether it's worth carrying on.
Going the other way.
That's all right. Thanks anyway.
This isn't the way it's
supposed to end.
Enough's enough now.
You sure this is what you want?
Yeah. Absolutely?
We had a really good day yesterday.
I just want to leave it at that.
Yeah, and I'll agree with
you on that.
We can't afford to carry on.
No.
We've done well. We've done
really well.
OK.
Honestly, we should be bloody proud
of ourselves.
Home.
And this is just the start
of the journey. It's not the end.
We've got a bloody long
way to go still.
I've never stopped loving
my daughter. Never.
And she feels
that I did stop loving her and...
...and that's my fault,
because I never told her.
We have made massive,
massive ground.
I've loved every minute of this.
The fact that I have spent
45 days with my daughter,
it's just been the best thing
I've done in all my life.
For me, the bigger picture
has always been about mine and Dad's
relationship and having that
opportunity to spend the time together.
This is the beginning of our
next race,
I guess, as father and daughter
and how our life continues.
It means nothing unless you
come first at the last leg.
After 15,000km,
eight provinces,
the finish line
and £20,000 is approaching.
I'm back! That's my girl.
We can do it. Whoa!
The whole race. Oh, Jesus...
Every decision has been made
with this leg in mind.
This is unreal. It's heating up!
