Race Across the World (2019–…): Season 3, Episode 3 - Banff - Alberta - full transcript
The race is on again as the five pairs head south to the third checkpoint, the Rocky Mountain resort town of Banff. Which team will come in last place and be eliminated?
The desire to explore our planet
has never been stronger.
But in travelling over,
are we missing the joys
of journeying through?
Canada. The second largest
country in the world.
From Pacific to Atlantic Ocean -
flight time seven hours.
But could you successfully navigate
this gruelling 16,000km route
at ground level...
...all for the price
of doing it by air?
Five pairs of ordinary Brits
are about to undertake just that.
Run! Go, go, go. go- 9°!
In a demanding
and challenging race...
All I'm saying is I'm going to die.
We're all going to die.
...they'll head deep into the wild...
Oh, my God, the sea is ice.
...cross vast prairies...
This is awesome. Road trip!
...soar high into the Rockies...
just once in a lifetime, innit?
If we see a bear,
I'm going to kill you.
Aah!
...to the very edges
of civilisation...
We are going to go into
the remote wilderness here.
We can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
...without smart phones or bank cards
and with a limited budget.
It's dark, it's raining.
We've got no money.
We are going to have to find
a car share. I don't like this!
They'll need charm...
Parlez-vous anglais?
Mission accomplished.
...hard work...
We're absolutely brassic.
We can claw all the money back.
Yeah. We'll work.
...and ingenuity to get them through.
I can give you a ride.
Are you going to kill us? No.
Have they got what it takes
both physically...
It's just the hardest thing I think
I've clone. ..and emotionally?
It's hard, but you've just made us
feel like family.
I believe in you. I know.
I just don't believe in me.
I'm not giving up.
The rewards are great...
Mother Nature at her best.
Never seen anything like it.
...and for the first team to the
finish line, a prize of £20,000.
Every second counts.
In a race... If they come behind us
I'm taking the bag off you.
...across the world.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Mid-life crisis
is going really well.
Yeah, I'm quite enjoying my crisis.
Yeah.
Five teams headed into the wild.
Stop singing!
Splashing the cash...
This is expensive but we're taking
matters into our own hands.
...got Tricia and Cathie
to Dawson City a day ahead.
It's me and you, sweetheart.
Ladi persuaded daughter Monique
to rough it.
It just goes to show that I can
suck it up when I need to.
I've got a three-bedroom trailer.
Are you going to kill us? No.
Mobeen learned something
new about wife Zainib.
I just don't get her sometimes.
To tackle the wilderness...
It is quite cool
to be in the forest.
I just don't want to see
a bear.
...Marc and Michael played it safe...
It seems super easy. Michael. Stop!
...while car sharing
brought Claudia to the brink...
Come on. This is a nightmare.
You've just got to keep working it.
...as both teams remain on the road.
Who's that? That's Kev.
It's Kev and Claudia
In the far north
of the Yukon territory...
Wow.
All this vastness.
...the second checkpoint
in the Race Across Canada.
This last week has been
tough at times,
and I think this makes it worth it.
It makes it worth it, yeah,
exactly what I thought.
Now the engines are fully burning,
I kind of feel like
I'm really to get going.
Bit nervous, cos I don't know
where we're going.
For the teams already in town...
I'm in need of a drink, Dad.
...a 36-hour break
before they can move on.
Here's to the second leg, clone.
Second leg, clone.
I'm hoping the next leg
we don't have to go up,
because, A, it's colder,
B, it's more remote.
There's nothing there except polar
bears. Exactly, so I don't want...
No, there's no polar bears
in the Arctic.
There are polar bears in the Arctic.
Oh!
About to learn
their next destination...
...the first team into Dawson City,
Tricia and Cathie, are first out...
Oh, l00k at that.
...with a 25-hour head start
over their nearest competitors...
Oh, my God.
Let's go, let's go, let's go!
...and two teams yet to check in.
Dad, just slow down. Come on.
If they come behind us, Marc,
I'm taking the bag off you.
If you hadn't noticed,
I'm not good at running.
Bombay Peggy's, just here, Marc. OK.
Fourth.
We're not bottom, we're climbing,
we've still got six legs to go.
More than enough time
to catch up on people.
I am happy to be here
at Dawson City.
I am not happy to be fourth
because I want to be bloody first.
I can't hide
the competitive side of me.
You ready?
Let's do this.
Third check point is Banff.
At least I know where it is.
Do you? Yeah. Good girl.
Perched in the Rocky Mountains
4,500 feet above sea level
the highest town in Canada, Banff.
A picturesque resort set amongst
jagged peaks and glacial lakes,
such as Lake Louise, world renowned
for its tranquil, turquoise waters.
The third checkpoint is 2,700km away
in the province of Alberta,
and on this leg,
there is a need for speed.
"The team that reaches there
in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
Yeah, but we've got 48 hours
on the others.
25 and two places haven't come in.
The threat of elimination means that
every decision counts.
Their first challenge will be
to get out of the Yukon
and back to civilisation
by joining the Alaska Highway south.
Next to no public transport
means teams face a stark choice.
Hire cars are costly,
endangering race budgets,
while car sharing,
although potentially cheap,
can be slow and unreliable.
Obviously we had that big spend
with the car, we are over budget.
We've got to be careful, haven't we,
this one? We do have to be careful.
We can hitch as much as possible.
Then the teams will need to choose
the best way to approach Banff,
by traversing the Rockies
themselves,
or by circumventing them, passing
through Alberta's major cities.
Right in the middle of the Rockies.
Oh, my God, that's awesome.
If we did go down the city route,
the transport's going to be
more reliable,
but I'd hate to come so close
and not actually
come through the Rockies,
that would... I'd be gutted.
It's got to be done.
Cos if we go to Edmonton, it's going
to be like going to Cardiff.
We need to get out of Dawson
as quickly as we can.
As quickly as possible, yeah.
I think people will
underestimate us.
You got your little trusty sign
saying safe haven't you?
I have, actually. Good girl.
When you get to a certain age,
especially women,
we do become invisible.
You know, they do say, "Women
of a certain age shouldn't..."
Ugh. really?
We're not going to be eliminated,
there's no chance of it.
I'm really confident in us
as a team. Definitely.
Ancl I do quite enjoy
proving people wrong. Mmm.
I quite enjoy that.
I wonder if you could help us,
we're looking to try and get down
to Whitehorse today. Good luck! OK!
Last to arrive into Dawson...
Ah, fifth. Shame, but that's the way
the cookie crumbles, innit?
...Claudia and Kevin,
54 minutes behind Marc and Michael.
Whoa, that was hard work wasn't it?
Yeah. Did you use a car? No.
We used a car. You used a car?
Oh, did you? Yeah.
How did you get up here, then?
We hitchhiked the whole way.
Oh, my God!
They actually rented a car.
You know, we clone it
on our own two feet.
There's only 55 minutes in that,
and we've still got that money
in the bank, still in the race.
Oblivious to the impending
elimination,
both teams must wait 36 hours
before setting off on the next leg.
Due to leave,
25 hours behind the race leaders,
Monique and her father Ladi.
But they're nowhere to be seen.
I don't know where they are,
that's the thing.
Leapfrogging them,
Zainib and Mobeen.
"The team that reaches there
in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
This is the round that we...
Splash the cash.
We can always hire a car.
We need to get out of Dawson City
today, don't we? Yeah.
Let's get out. Cos the need
for speed is essential.
Are you heading to Whitehorse,
by any chance?
No. No, no.
The nearest car rental options
are in the Yukon's capital.
I'm excited. I don't want to come
last that's all that matters,
stay in the game. We are going to be
very competitive.
Ancl we can get competitive
with each other.
Normally it's to do with things
like...
Well, normally it's like
who's right...
I'm right
versus whether you're right,
and that's like a major competition
that's ongoing forever more.
Yeah. But usually I'm right.
Have you got any good tips
whilst you're car sharing?
Don't stink. Don't stink, yeah.
Yeah, and don't talk too much.
That's what I've been telling
you for eight years. I know.
And you're like,
"Oh, you can't change me."
I think we both wear the pants.
Like... What?
We do, like, there's not one
person that wears the trousers
in the relationship and it...
It changes.
Excuse me, sir, just wondering
if you're headed to Whitehorse?
Yeah, I probably could.
Yeah? Boom!
Smashed it! Smashed it.
We've lost a big amount of time
on the ladies that have come first,
who, er... Who are...
Who are really nice,
they're called Tricia and Cath,
they got in on Monday.
He's boring the arse
off of Cody right now.
Cody, tell us about yourself.
On their way north
in the previous leg,
Zainib and Mobeen struggled
to get out of Whitehorse.
That's a bit cool.
Follow me guys, come on in.
Let's have a look.
Hoping to avoid the same fate
heading in the opposite direction,
they get the local lowdown
from hostel owner Sarah Lee.
Why don't we, in the morning...
Yeah.
...phone some of the RV places
and see if they have a haul back
that needs to go back?
So, they may have an RV
that has to get back to Edmonton.
Oh, wow.
So, then you can take the RV back to
Edmonton for them. Is that a thing?
For free? It is, yeah. We love it.
Haul backs enable hire firms to move
their vehicles between branches,
sometimes in exchange
for free rental and fuel.
Oh, my God. If we get an RV
we don't need to bed and board,
cos you can sleep in the bloody RV.
It could be game changing.
You can completely drive from here
to Edmonton in 28 hours,
if you don't really stop.
If the... If the RV comes through...
Keep a level head... I know, yeah.
..cos if you get too excited...
You get excited, and you crash down.
...you're open to extreme
disappointment.
But they're not
the only team in town.
It hurts when I stand up.
I want you to rest up your leg
more than anything, yeah? Yeah.
Back in Dawson... "The team that
reaches there in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
Shit.
We've got a hell of a lot
of catching up to do,
if we've got any
chance of making it.
Next to get going, Marc and Michael,
over 45 hours behind
the current race leaders.
You've really got to push as hard as
you can on this one. I'm going to.
He... I am competitive. He's more
competitive than I am, I'd say.
Going to the gym,
when I used to run on the treadmill
I used to have, like, private wars
with people, without them knowing.
That is a long way to go. I mean,
this would have been an ideal time
to have a car, wouldn't it, but...
It's going to be so expensive.
Yeah, that's why
we need to get a lift this morning
so that we can get to Whitehorse
early afternoon
and then we go straight down to
Watson Lake. We need to move quick.
I'm anxious, I'm nervous,
I'm under pressure.
It's a challenge to get out of this
city, it's kind of the Dawson vortex
and I've had friends who haven't
been able to get out for months.
But me and Micky, I think we're in
a really good place,
and beginning to gel as a team,
and I feel like this could be the
beginning of something.
I'm just praying we get a lift.
If we was here all clay
it would be soul destroying.
54 minutes later...
I think we knew
the elimination was coming. Yeah.
And we're in fifth place at the
moment, so, urn... Doesn't bode well.
...Claudia and Kevin
start the elimination leg
having spent more of their budget
than any other team.
We've blown the budget
on the first two legs,
but we could catch up
by renting a car.
So, pick up a hire car
at Whitehorse, down to Edmonton,
drop off the car. That would be crap
from my perspective,
because I would really like to see
Lake Louise,
which is on the other side.
This is the knockout stage,
all right? Yeah,
but also please be aware that
that is the one place
that I wanted to go
since we started this trip.
Right.
Kevin's objective,
the city of Edmonton,
is on the other side of the Rockies
to Claudia's must-see Lake Louise.
If common sense prevails
as it should do,
and if we do see an opportunity
to get in front of the other racers,
then I think we'll take that.
But then equally if there's
an opportunity to see something,
then I want to take that.
We've got the hire car,
so we need a paid job definitely,
cos that paid job will hopefully pay
half of what we're going to spend.
I know her brain is fantastic,
full of great ideas but...
...this is a different ball game,
this is about
using your life skills.
This is serious shit,
get rid of the heart,
now start thinking with our brain.
My clad always has to have the last
word, always thinks that he's right.
We'd better get through
if we're doing this,
because I'm missing out on the one
thing I came to Canada to see. OK,
but that's what I'm saying is,
we can't afford to go there.
I really hope that on this trip
he'll listen to me
and hopefully make some
joint decisions on this.
So we're definitely heading
to Edmonton, yeah?
A quick start to Kevin's plan.
Honestly, we're so grateful,
so grateful. Absolutely perfect.
A ride south with
Catholic Missionary Miriam.
So, how have you guys
camped your way through the Yukon?
I mean, you know,
we did it for a few nights,
the nice thing is we're going south
now, so it's going to warm up a bit.
You're welcome just to
camp at my place. Really?
In the yard, yeah, that's it.
Definitely like to take you up
on that offer!
440 km away...
Morning! Are you heading
to Fort Nelson?
If you can cover the fuel,
I'll get you down there.
That's fantastic.
...Tricia and Cathie have managed
to car share to Watson Lake,
aiming to stretch their lead
even further.
Give me half an hour...
Yeah, great. I'm Cathie. I'm Barry.
Hi, Barry, nice to meet you.
But he said give him half an hour.
Which car is it? I don't know.
What's his name? Barry.
Ah, brilliant Barry.
Is that him?
No.
And he hasn't come out? No.
He might be in the loo. OK.
There was a guy who came in
called Barry.
He was here, but he left
about half an hour ago,
maybe he was just
pulling your chains.
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.
Perhaps he was just
pulling our chain.
But it's critical for us
to get a lift,
because it's an elimination round.
Every hour that we stay here...
ls every hour that they're going to
catch up with us. ..is every hour
that somebody's going to gain.
Ancl then that's it for us.
Eager to hunt
Tricia and Cathie down,
the prospect of a free set of wheels
to Edmonton...
It's going to save us
a shed load of dough.
...has Mobeen champing at the bit.
We have a few that need to go
down south pretty quickly.
Yeah, yeah, we can do that.
What are there conditions?
Do we need to pay or...?
Since you're doing us a favour, we
can give you 100% discount. Amazing.
Yeah, we can reimburse you the fuel
when you get back. Really?
There's a couple of things wrong
with it, but... That's fine.
Safe to drive, right?
Safe to drive, yeah.
It is missing a tyre right now,
but I think we can probably
slap one together,
so I would say
we need a couple of hours. OK.
It is what it is, yeah, perfect.
Cool. Thank you.
You're feeling smug, aren't you?
Look at you, you've got your smug
face. No, I'm not feeling smug!
I'm not. Ah, look, it's Ladi! Ladi.
How you doing?
Yeah, good, good, good.
Monique's injured herself.
Oh, no, is she OK? Pretty badly.
We're going to have to get
a vehicle. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And Cath and Trish are, like...
They're miles ahead. Smashing it...
They've got a jump on us big-time.
Take care.
We thought we had outsmarted him
there,
but, nope, they're just as
on it as us.
I mean, it's really good
that we've got all this for free
and we've got a guaranteed ride
up to Edmonton,
but it looks like it's going to be
very close this leg.
We need to be taking this
a lot more serious,
this is not a jolly any more.
That's what I'm thinking.
Are they going to get the same deal
as what I've got? That's the thing.
Whoa! Things are heating up.
Holed up a few blocks away, Monique.
I fell down the stairs
and I've hurt my foot,
I needed to go to the hospital, and
it's turned out to be six stitches,
so I can't really run,
I can just about walk.
Her injury means
she and father Ladi
left the checkpoint three
and a half hours later than planned.
Me and Dad, I think, have just sort
of got into the swing of things.
It would be so, so annoying
if we got eliminated now.
Hello, father. Hello, daughter.
Give me some good news.
Look out the window.
An RV? How much was it?
Nothing. You're joking!
Whoop-whoop!
I do honestly put my clad on this
pedestal, I think he's my superhero.
And it's taking us
all the way to Edmonton.
Sick!
Whenever I'm scared, I'll call Dad.
Whenever I'm in danger,
I'll call Dad.
I say in danger but, I mean, like,
if my tyre's flat or something,
I'll call Dad.
There's a bit of a caveat, yeah?
Oh, God.
It doesn't have windows.
Are you joking? I'm not joking.
I encourage that, I'm like,
"If you're in trouble,
"you call your dad first, yeah?"
But I think there is
a danger in that sometimes
because there is that over reliance.
I mean, it has a front window
and windshield and everything else
like that, but some of
the back windows... not there.
Road trip, road trip.
We've paid nothing for it,
and accommodation-wise, look how
much we're going to be saving
over this, just the three days
having this.
It is a shame
about the windows, though.
Oh, my God! It's cracking, Dad.
Oh, right, OK. Urn...
Oh, wow!
They haven't even used duct tape.
This is a disaster.
As Ladi's bargain banger stalls...
Got a temporary fix on it, let's go.
Well, why did he give us
the one without windows?
It's on us now to make time back.
...rivals Zainib and Mobeen
ease into second place.
This is awesome, road trip!
Is that Ladi?
Nah, no broken windows.
Ah, that's going to be quite chilly
at night.
Poor Monique, she was already
struggling with the camping.
Not see any moose yet, Dad.
Nope. And I don't really want
to encounter a moose,
not with the windows like that.
Oh, my God!
We are screwed.
I mean, we're screwed already,
I mean, look at the time.
This race is about growing,
you know?
There are things that I've not
necessarily been able to teach
Monique yet so being eliminated now
is not an option for us.
The sun did not dry off
the tent this morning
so Dad's using his face flannel
to dry off the remains.
After a night in missionary Miriam's
yard, Kevin is on a mission.
I know the car hire is expensive,
but this is a must for us,
we're in fifth,
we need to get back into the game.
Thank you so much for letting us
stay last night,
it was just absolutely lovely.
Oh, it was my pleasure.
We now need to get a hire car
for the clay.
I can help you look, if you'd like?
Yeah, that would be amazing. OK.
Sorry for the mess.
That's all right, don't worry.
We can have a look here.
So for Whitehorse...
No cars available.
They're almost always sold out
at this time.
One thing, if you want to
consider it, is I have an uncle
who lives in Spruce Grove,
which is just outside Edmonton.
Right. So, if you were considering
this you could use our van,
drive it to Edmonton,
drop it off at my uncle's,
but, I mean,
it's completely up to you.
But how would you
get your car back, though?
Oh, my uncle is driving back
in, er, two weeks. Really? Yeah.
That's actually a complete
game changer for us.
OK, well, I mean, I don't... No, no,
no, as in, in an amazing way,
in the sense of how much that was
going to cost us
in terms of our budget, so. Yeah.
SHE SPEAKS FRENCH
He says it's completely fine.
Is this really happening?!
An offer they can't refuse -
their own set of wheels to take them
almost 2,000km to Edmonton.
What a fantastic option
that we've got now. I know.
That can save us so much money.
So, there's a particular with the
trunk, er, you have to keep it open
with a snow broom, but it usually
holds well, there you go. Perfect.
We'll look after your little baby
for you and, um... Have fun.
Thank you, thank you so much.
Ancl we're off.
Let's rock and roll. Bye!
I just cannot believe the kindness
of people,
and this is beyond anything
that I would ever have dreamed
of anyone doing.
I just... It's just bloody mad.
Over 1,000km closer
to the checkpoint...
I think we're just on the top edge
of the Rockies now.
...Tricia and Cathie are first
to enter the province of Alberta.
Oh, wow! Look at that!
Its western border
shaped by the Canadian Rockies,
part of a colossal mountain range
that stretches all the way
to New Mexico.
Before they ascend
into the mountains, a pit stop.
We are proud to welcome you
to the Grande Prairie Stompede!
Hi.
England. UK.
Thank you! Thank you!
In the late 19th century,
the area's pristine grass lands
drew great cattle drives
from the United States.
This cowboy past is celebrated today
by the Grande Prairie Stompede.
Wow, you can feel
the floor going...
It is absolutely crazy here.
I really don't understand
what's going on.
To help balance the books...
We get all this wet bedding out,
we want to keep it clean
and fresh in here.
...the girls have agreed to give
a helping hand
to chuckwagon racer Derek.
Big piles, and they're all boys
so they're a messy bunch.
We did overspend on the last leg,
hiring a car.
I think we're still in the race.
Oh, we're definitely.
We've just got to keep moving...
Yeah. ..but also enjoy it. Oh, yeah.
Oh, my hot flushes are literally
burning in the stomach.
This is actually, like,
being on fire.
I hate going through the menopause,
but you've just kind of got to
suck it up and get on with it.
I'm absolutely loving doing this
with Cathie at this age,
cos we can appreciate it more.
If I was 18, 19, I'd be like,
yeah, let's go pubbing,
let's jump on the rodeo,
but not actually appreciate it,
and I wouldn't do it with anybody
else but Cathie. I couldn't.
She'd kill me for starters.
We'll haul her to the poop pile.
OK. Ah!
Tricia and Cathie first met aged 13,
when Cathie's family
moved from Plymouth to Aberystwyth.
I was really worried about
that first clay in the new school
because I'd been bullied previously.
I didn't know whether I would
make friends and I remember
I went back home,
and I just burst into tears,
and my clad was mortified,
and he was like, "What's the matter?
What's the matter?"
And I said,
"I had a really nice clay."
Ancl obviously with Trish it became
a very special friendship.
It was a magical time. It was.
Still is now. Yeah, yeah.
I love these horses,
they're just so majestic.
I-I-I like them from afar.
So that's Bugsy
and he just wants to say hello.
Yeah, yeah, he'll give you
a scratch. If we were at home,
she would definitely not
go anywhere near a horse.
This is one of the...
Oh, he's looking at me weirdly.
He's got a funny eye, that's why.
There you go. Hello. Quite warm.
It's nice.
It's fantastic and I'm so pleased
that she's able to see more
than she thought she was going to.
She surprises me every clay.
You did it! Well clone.
I'm proud of you.
Are you heading to Watson Lake
at all? No, OK, thank you.
In danger of losing touch
with the other teams -
Marc and Michael,
looking to get to Watson Lake.
Our budget's really quite tight.
If we were to get a cab it's going
to cost over $1,000. Yeah, I know.
There might be
a ride down for you tomorrow.
Yeah, that would be great.
My brother-in-law is from Watson
and he's going to be heading
back there tomorrow. OK.
I live about 5km from here,
come out there and, er,
hang out with me
for a little while, if you want.
Let me get my propane and... Yeah,
sure. ..we can get going. Thank you.
A lift tomorrow with Larry's
brother-in-law Sheldon
could get the boys back in the race.
Nice to meet you, Sheldon.
Michael. Michael.
While tonight, some bear therapy.
WOW!
I'm more accurate when I'm thinking
that it's coming at me.
I think I'd be less accurate
if it was coming at me,
I'd be panicking all over the place.
See, look, I'm doing it now,
cos I'm thinking about it!
Too high.
Originally from Texas,
gun instructor Larry
has lived in the Canadian wilderness
for 35 years.
If you didn't come then, probably
would have given up, to be fair.
Really? Yeah. Well, you never
give up, I've played enough sports
where you don't ever give up.
You never know.
Yeah, you're right, you never know.
Somehow gone from thinking we're
going to be stuck in Whitehorse
for a week to meeting
that one person
and being fortunate enough
for them to help us.
I'm shocked and happy all in one.
Going to have some moose, eh?
I haven't had moose before.
Do you mean... You actually mean
the meat, don't you?
To me a mousse is like
a chocolate mousse!
THEY LAUGH
Marc's all right,
he feels relieved that we've got
this lined up for tomorrow.
He's able to accept that
and be happy with that,
but, for me, we're not
moving fast enough.
Think they're definitely
the nicest ribs that I've ever had.
Yeah. Oh, mama.
And even though this is
the right decision,
I'm just worried that we're
kind of losing pace with everyone.
Bear spray's good but, you know,
really should be packing,
you know, a gun or something, right?
Why are you telling me that?
I'm just letting you know.
You're just letting me know what?!
That, you know...
Bear spray doesn't work?
As the brothers wait it out...
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Look at that! Ah!
...Claudia and Kevin snake around the
jade green waters of Muncho Lake.
Wow. Are we camping in this tonight?
Look at that view.
Let's get the tent out.
That's it, just...
There we go, beautiful.
Christ.
Yeah, maybe not quite that position.
You all right? LAUGHING: Yeah!
I don't think there are many people
that will be lucky enough
to say that they've woken up
to a view like that.
This is what makes you
want to come to Canada.
It's going to be
a fresh one tonight.
Feel like this is
commitment to the budget.
It's all money in the bank,
innit, eh?
Ancl the thought of seeing
Lake Louise,
OK, it might not happen,
but, yeah, I've always wanted to do
something like this
and it's just nice
to do that with Dad.
There's a calm between us now,
and we're living in the moment.
You know, Christ,
we are bonding again.
Right, here we go again.
Here we go again, yeah.
Aiming to get themselves moving
once more, Tricia and Cathie,
backing themselves to approach
the checkpoint through the Rockies.
Are you going anywhere near jasper
at all today?
I'm actually not, but I am willing
to take you guys there.
Oh, my God, that would be amazing.
But I want to know
what your guys' budget,
because with how
the fuel prices are,
it's expensive to travel
back and forth. Yeah.
Is 600 OK for you guys?
600? 600? Really?!
We're nowhere near that figure.
We've spent 600 already this week
so I think maximum we could do
is 200, you know, that's...
That's the closest we could go,
really, isn't it? Um...
Bear with me. Are you OK?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just...
Yeah, it's fine.
The shock of that,
sort of a kick to the guts.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting that.
No, I wasn't.
I've been, I guess
pretending to be confident,
pretending to be something I'm not
whilst asking for a lift.
But you get to the point where
you're like, do you know what?
I'm clone, I can't do that any more,
I can't be that version of me.
We'll find another lift.
Yeah we... We'll get there.
Yeah, we will. We will. Yeah.
Let's hope something comes up,
cos we can't be here tonight,
we can't get stuck here tonight.
We need to stay in the race.
While the leaders sit still...
I had a dream that Cathie quit.
Why? Car sharing and trying to find
rides is too hard for her.
...two teams are hot on their heels.
I lose track of the clays. Same here.
200km behind them...
We are motoring now.
...Claudia and Kevin
are approaching Fort St john.
What does that mean?
There is a handbook in there,
can you just get that out and have
a look for me? It's all in French.
Tyre pressure, I think.
After two days solid driving...
I am draining out the bodily fluids,
of which there's lots of it.
...Monique and Ladi
have reached Grande Prairie.
In all honesty, I would have liked
to have got further,
but I can only be so many hours
on the road.
But a break from driving does not
mean a break from the race.
Ooh, there's a tampon wrapper
on the floor.
There's nothing wrong
with cleaning at all,
there's a long line of people
in our families that have cleaned
for a living and it's just something
that you just have to do sometimes.
Following up on an ad
in the job's directory,
they're pulling a shift
at a local barbecue joint
in exchange for some readies
and potential perks.
This means that if we need to have
a great push at the end
to get to Banff, then we'll be able
to splash the cash to get there.
And, hopefully,
we will be fed barbecue.
Amazing.
It's not the worst, but my foot's
really, really hurting.
Sit down, I just don't want you
on your feet too long.
Monique is moving into another phase
of her life,
she's finding her feet in terms of
her career and world of work,
before you know it, she might
be getting engaged and married
and children, and then, you know,
that time with her
will not be the same,
it will be a different dynamic.
If you want me to do some, let me
know, we can take it in turns.
I think this race will be
almost like a last hurrah, just us,
while she's still my princess.
This is unreal.
Oh, my God, that tastes so good.
I want her to be independent,
I want her to be fearless and strong
and think that she can just
conquer the world
and do anything by herself,
but to know I'm there in the wings.
Ready? Yeah.
I'm stuffed.
I'm hoping the other contestants,
they're still behind us
we don't want a foot race at the end
because... we'd probably lose that.
I'm quite excited about this, I've
never been in a Winnebago before.
Oh, they're wonderful. just great.
Currently in last place, Marc
and Michael are back in the game.
I'm glad you're coming with us.
I think we're glad.
OK. I'll tell you afterwards.
They've landed a lift of 500km
with Paula and her family.
Oh, my word, look at that.
There's too many! Oh, wow.
86 bison so far. 86? Yeah.
And I hadn't seen a bison
until today. That's mad.
Feels good being on the road.
Feel like we've just sort of
figured it out.
It's really cosy in here, isn't it?
It is.
Especially if you're sitting
by a handsome man. Oh!
Did you like that?
Yeah, that was nice.
A bear.
Make a note of that, Michael, yeah?
That's your responsibility
when you sit in the front seat.
He's got it.
Winding me up.
Just cos he's older
doesn't mean he's in charge.
Our dad made us quite competitive
when we was younger,
and we ended up being pitted
against each other all the time,
which then made me hate him,
cos he was good at everything.
I was only good at eating.
Well, you had some qualities.
If it was football, Dad would put us
on two different teams,
knowing eventually
we'd play each other.
The other sport was tennis,
he trained Michael to be a
double backhander drop shot player
and trained me to be
a forehand hard server,
so... completely opposites
working against each other.
Unfortunately, it's also had
a knock-on effect
with who we are as people.
My dad passed away when I was 20
and then Micky went off to uni
and I stayed behind,
but never dealt with the whole
losing my dad,
I just put it into
the back of my head
and me and him just didn't spend
time together.
We didn't talk to each other
about it, we just left it.
So, this is kind of like
healing for you both?
Yeah, this is 16 years
in the making, I think.
Bye-bye. Best of luck. Take care.
After 20 days racing,
the brothers decide to bed down
in the great outdoors
for the first time.
There's not going to be many bears
round here, it's a populated area,
so for you, it's a good first
introduction to camping.
Yeah. Yeah? Yeah.
Just do it here? Yeah. Yeah.
Hey, guys, do you know
this is a RV only spot?
Is it? Yeah. Yeah.
Oh! Ancl so it begins.
Today's been a really good clay.
Met some more great people,
travel led far,
so we've clone well with the race.
Still got that niggly feeling
of we don't want it to end now
cos I feel like we're getting the
hang of it.
We've clone it. You've clone it.
You did it with me,
I couldn't have done it without you.
At night, I'm going to padlock it
with my padlock.
I'm not a fan of padlocking
ourselves in, Marc.
I don't want to be dragged out.
How are we going to get out?
We're not padlocking ourselves in,
that's silliness. Oh, OK.
We're right next to a forest.
Do you think a padlock is going
to stop a bear? I don't know.
With big sharp claws. Rrr!
Ahead of the boys...
We'll stack one side and then
we'll, er, make a space there.
...Claudia and Kevin come to a halt
in Fort St john.
Founded in 1794, the oldest colonial
settlement in British Columbia.
First paid job in three weeks.
Put two hands on there,
bend down properly, bend your knees,
keep your back straight. Yes.
Ow, Dad!
That literally went into my knee.
So clumsy. No, you are clumsy.
What, for being here?
Despite a free set of wheels,
their hobbled budget is now
close to half its original size,
making the prospect of paid work
at a craft brewery too good to miss
for former publican Kevin.
So normally in the UK when we
deliver beer, we stack like this,
yeah, and that way...
Well, this teaches me something!
That way it won't slide off
the rail, you see?
My dream was always to have
a little village country pub
and my wife at the time,
yeah, we made the pact,
we sold the house,
and we made a brilliant go of it.
Seven clays a week, 24 hours a clay,
there is no getting away from it,
you are just committed.
One of the things you miss out
on being a publican, you know,
family birthdays,
friends' birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries, everyday parties,
a barbecue that's going on.
Raising your child
ever cross your mind?
Ancl raising a child, yeah,
that comes into play.
Um, well reminded there.
I loved it, building the castle,
building the business dream.
Morning.
You having a Guinness?
No problem, yeah.
Thing is, I don't think it ever
leaves you, does it?
Well, it doesn't leave you,
it's just... just engrained.
After the divorce,
I lost the business,
I lost everything I had,
it was devastating.
I was living on
beans on toast again.
Hello, mate.
Hello, you, can I get you a drink?
He does carry a lot of pride
and rightly so, like,
the business that he and my mum
set up was incredibly successful.
But, for me, that's not really what
matters, it's about spending time
with your child growing up
and creating memories that way,
and I think that probably hurts him
if he actually thinks about it
too much.
I guess that's why it's nice now,
spending time with him
and creating new memories.
We've actually achieved quite a lot
today for the longevity of the race.
We've given it our best.
Made a spelling mistake.
After 22 and a half hours
without advancing their race...
What?
Really? What?
I'm going to cover the gas.
You're kidd...
We're happy to put
some money towards it. Yeah, yeah,
it's going to cost a lot
of money for gas,
but I'm going to cover one
trip of the gas. Oh!
Oh, my gosh, you're amazing. Ah!
Tricia and Cathie have resurrected
the potential ride to jasper
by finding another passenger
to share the expense.
We're going to jasper.
We're going to jasper.
Can't believe it. I could cry.
Wow. This scenery is incredible.
It's spectacular.
So glad we chose this route.
On the other side of the Rockies...
So, we're in Edmonton? Yeah,
I think we need to try and find
an RV place now.
We can even ask people, like,
where's the nearest RV place
to drop this off?
Do you want to pull into the
McDonalds and figure it out,
rather than going further
and further into the city?
I'm tempted just to keep going down
this road and looking for a sign.
Rising unexpectedly
out of the wilderness,
North America's northernmost
large city,
the capital of Alberta, Edmonton.
A perfect place to spot the
Aurora Borealis in the wintertime,
and in the summer enjoy
up to 17 hours of sunshine a day.
This is it. Done 2,000km which is
the longest I've ever driven
in 48 hours, really.
It's within striking distance
of the checkpoint -
but Zainib and Mobeen will have to
cover the final 400km
under their own steam.
Can I hand you the keys back?
I've emptied the sewage,
the important thing, eh? Perfect!
All we've been doing all clay
is racing, basically.
Last two clays we've just
been driving. Yeah.
We need a bit of a break,
and so while we're in the city,
if we've got a chance to earn some
money back, we may as well do that.
Edmonton is a city of immigrants,
making up close to a quarter
of the population.
The first Chinese
settled here in 1890.
We want to show you how to mix
the dough. Oh, perfect, yeah.
Let me see your muscle. Yeah, yeah.
Mr To, I can do it. Muscle.
I can do it, Mr To.
Siu To arrived in 1978, and soon
after launched his first restaurant.
His green onion cakes are so popular
there have been calls for them
to become the official
dish of the city.
OK... Hold it from the bottom.
All of it?
Yeah, all of them.
Congratulations,
you have very strong wife.
That's why she does
everything for me.
Yeah, I tell you,
you'd better be careful.
Having met Zainib when I did,
I was always her junior,
at uni, at work, in terms of career.
Yeah. Ah, beautiful.
I was in awe of her.
Make sure they don't...
They don't stuck.
Girls better than boys.
You've had all the compliments,
I've had none.
I finished in the last 10% in my
year group in medical school,
I had to repeat my second,
third and fourth year exams.
I work under the radar,
you can take all the glory.
It was quite tough.
He's very, very slow.
Yeah. Everything he does, so slow.
Yeah? OK.
What are you doing, just watching?
I'm encouraging you.
You need to find... Find her a job.
I don't always outwardly show it,
but I don't think I could do life
with anyone other than Mobeen.
So, you guys have to
finish all this dough.
No problem.
Because a lot of people in farmers'
market, they're waiting for this.
Thought it'd be a break
from the race,
it's a different kind of race now.
It's nice to know
that you've got your person
and you've found that person
in life. It's comforting.
The husband and wife
is co-operating, yeah. Yeah.
When we put our heads together,
we actually get the job clone
and we get it clone fast.
Restaurant is a husband and wife
team, that's called a mom and pop.
Here you go, mama. Thank you, papa.
Back across the Rockies...
This is literally the last bit
to get to the checkpoint.
...Tricia and Cathie have ascended
1,000 metres to the town of jasper.
Originally a fur trading post,
now the bustling focal point to the
largest of seven national parks
in the Canadian Rockies, and just
290km from the checkpoint in Banff.
Let's just hope that we haven't
just missed the bus.
We have one bus every day,
it left at 1:35 this afternoon.
Ancl that's the only way
to get to Banff? Yes.
We're a pretty remote town.
It's an elimination round
and we need to get...
We need to get there tonight,
otherwise there's a risk that
we're going home. Oh, I'm sorry!
It's such a massive tourist area
and there's no buses.
Well, there are. Once a clay.
But it's all once a clay.
I feel like I'm swimming uphill.
We were quite smug
about having a big lead.
Are you heading to Banff? Oh, OK.
No worries, thank you.
That smugness came back and bit us.
Early night.
Because we're losing a night now,
it's given the other teams...
A chance to catch up. ..a chance...
Well, two of them will probably have
overtaken us by now.
It puts us in a quite
precarious position. Yeah.
I don't even want to think about it.
We need to get a wiggle to catch
these buses. I'm coming. I know.
The teams set their sights on Banff.
I reckon we'll make it.
PMA, positive mental attitude.
Be careful.
The last to arrive will be
eliminated from the race.
You guys have travel led a long way.
Quite far. Our mum was convinced
that we'd be here four clays
and we'd kill each other,
and we'd end up coming back
worse than we were.
Oh, well, she'll be thoroughly
pleased with you two.
We are the dark horses.
So, they've got a route Edmonton
to Calgary, not to Banff.
Where's the best place to get
onward travel to Banff?
OK, so that's $163.
Thank you so much.
On the move... So hopefully get
there as soon as possible now.
...Zainib and Mobeen
are going to Calgary,
127km shy of their ultimate goal.
I'm not sure who's going to be
eliminated this week,
it could be us.
This is anyone's game just now.
Ah!
What? Oh, for flip's sake.
Next coach to Calgary
leaves at 3:45.
From there to Banff is there
another bus that goes?
I don't know how to get you
to Banff. Today. Today. Yeah.
If we were to drive from here
to Banff,
how long roughly would it take?
Through the highway,
four hours and seven minutes.
I think we should just get a taxi.
Yeah, just get a taxi.
Thank you so, so, much.
Thank you so much for your help. OK.
We always said that our plan
was to use the money
we saved to spend
in order to get there quickly.
It's elimination,
so, do you know what?
We just have to suck it up
and get on with it.
Monique and Ladi splash 12%
of their remaining budget
to go directly to Banff.
If this was the end of my journey
today I will be very upset,
very upset.
SOOkm to the west...
It's a massive relief
to be on the bus. Huge relief.
Just hope and pray we're not last.
Yeah.
...Tricia and Cathie have found
a way out of jasper,
but only as far as Lake Louise.
We were so far ahead.
But we lost a night last night,
we haven't seen anybody.
Right, see how we get to Banff
from here.
There is a bus service. One would
have just gone, unfortunately.
OK. Are you guys in a hurry
to get there? Major, major hurry.
Yeah. Major hurry? Yeah. I don't
know if you want to run over
and see if maybe the bus is just
running a couple of minutes late.
There's no bus out here.
We need to win this race.
Come in fourth, at least.
After covering over 1,900km,
it's time for Claudia and Kevin
to wave goodbye to their wheels.
First port of call
is drop off the car.
We don't know how
we're going to get to Banff,
do not need any delays stopping us
getting to that checkpoint.
They've reached Spruce Grove,
just outside of Edmonton...
There we go.
...home to Uncle Norm.
Thank you so much,
we really, really appreciate it.
Hiya.
Now, we are aiming to get Banff
at some point today.
I'll drive you to whatever bus
station, er, you need to get to.
OK, that would be... This might be
a really cheeky thing to ask,
but I don't suppose you could
actually drive us to Banff?
Why not? Yeah? Yeah.
Amazing, thank you so much.
Absolutely brilliant.
Let's just drive to Banff. OK.
Awesome.
Ballsy? Yeah, absolutely,
but we are on our way.
Lay back and enjoy the ride, Norm.
So, your family have clone
so much for us,
we just... can't be
more thankful, really.
Happy to be sharing a bit of
a leg of your journey.
There's a big lake in Banff.
Lake Louise? Lake Louise?
It's the one destination on her tick
box that she's always wanted to do.
Well, she'll be awful close to it.
Not close enough.
There you go, $250. Thank you.
Thank you so much. You're welcome.
Nervous and anxious.
Fingers crossed not last,
cos I'm not ready to go home.
In 1883, Banff became
a resort town overnight,
when railway workers
discovered hot springs
at the base of Sulphur Mountain.
Today, the teams will need to
climb to its summit,
to sign in and avoid elimination.
BEEPING
"Proceed to the Rimrock Hotel."
Their GPS tracker tells them
how to get there.
"Head to the Banff gondola
fourth floor observation deck."
I know what the bloody gondola is.
All right, don't worry about that,
it's where we've got to get to
to finish.
Ascending over 2,000 feet
by cable car...
Oh, Jesus! Have you seen how far
we've got to go up?
Yeah, don't look at it, love,
it'll freak you out, just don't look
at it. Starting to freak me out.
Where do you think
the checkpoint's going to be?
Up a mountain.
I'm going to be hiking in my Croce!
Passing Calgary - Monique and Ladi,
90 minutes from Banff...
Mountain or not, we've got to make
it to the checkpoint,
hopefully it's not last.
Weather's fine, roads are clearing.
I'm really buzzing here,
we've absolutely smashed it.
...while Claudia, Kevin
and Uncle Norm
are about to enter Banff
National Park by the east gate.
Do we know which way you're going?
Where we going, straight on?
Uh... Banff, so west.
Have we missed it?
You've missed the exit, Dad.
Shit! Oh, God!
Oh, don't tell me we've got
to go 25km up and back again.
Where am I going? I've got no idea.
Thank you so much for
everything today. Yes, thank you,
nice to meet you, good luck.
Lovely to meet you.
You're going to make it, that's all
you gotta think... Yes, we are.
I think this is a good spot
for another ride, it's busy.
We have the chance now
to get to Banff a clay earlier.
Oh, jeez!
We come all this way and I can't...
I can't lo...
You're going to be fine.
Look at me, look at me.
I believe in you. I know,
I just don't believe in me. No.
I have faith in you,
you can do this.
Rimrock Hotel. We're doing well.
The sign says...
Isn't it easier to go down there
and walk along till we see it?
But the sign says this way. Just...
No, it's saying down there.
Steps forward.
Oh, my good God,
it swings and everything.
I won't let you go.
Are we there yet? Not yet.
I need a wee wee.
Whee! Wow! Look at that, gorgeous.
We're just going to concentrate on
the bear, all right?
I'm looking at the floor.
just looking at the bear.
OK, right, here. Right.
Oh, my God.
Hand on the book. Sweaty palms
for menopausal women, all right?
OK, come on, then.
Oh, please, please.
I don't want to do this.
THEY SCREAM!
Oh, my God, we're saved.
It is a relief.
Oh, no way! No way! Not far away!
We did pretty well.
We caught up on the girls,
I don't think we want any one
particular pair to go.
Yeah, it's awful to think about it.
Yeah.
My foot is going to balloon.
As soon as we get home,
we're going to put some ice on it.
Are you ready for a run? No.
Shit.
"Four teams have arrived in Banff,
"sadly this means you've been
eliminated from the race.
"Please await instructions
for your homeward travel."
Well clone!
Oh, my God!
This is brutal, with, um,
Michael and Marc, that's sad.
With four teams safely signed in,
Marc and Michael's time in the race
is at an end.
I'm gutted, not going to lie.
We've clone really well, this leg,
we've hitched all the way
from Whitehorse.
Fair play to the other teams.
Everyone just got there really fast.
It's been incredible
and it's pushed us
and took us to levels I didn't think
we could get to, so...
What, as brothers? Yeah, as brothers
but also, like, in ourselves.
I just felt like I had to
show you something,
cos I didn't think
I had that much to offer,
I just feel really fortunate to have
shared those experiences with you.
I'm looking forward to our lives
again at home, but together.
Aw. Hugs? Aw!
Nice, and we actually...
That was a nice hug. Yeah.
Four teams remain.
10,000km of Canada
still to be conquered.
That was the other teams'
chance to overtake. Yeah.
Yeah, but they haven't.
I know. I just...
We know when each other
is struggling
and then immediately
support each other. Beautiful.
I have to be honest, I was a bit
disappointed seeing us second,
I wanted to be first. We weren't
even close to being eliminated.
Yeah. That's what
encourages me more,
because I think we've got
so much more to give. Yeah.
It was crunch time.
I fell down the stairs,
I could have walked a bit more
carefully, but I made it.
I knew she was resilient,
but this stuff is epic.
Do you think we're getting
the hang of this? I do.
Yeah, we do, I do think we're
getting the hang of this.
It's slightly bittersweet for me,
it's tough knowing that
Lake Louise is down the road,
and I haven't made it there.
Is that what I'm going to live
to regret?
But we've now got another five weeks
to race in. I want more.
Agh! I'm getting so wet
because of you.
The teams race across
badlands and prairies...
Then there's mile after
mile after mile!
...to catch a train to the Arctic.
Oh, my God, the sea is ice.
If we don't get on that train,
then we might as well
book our flights home. What?!
Well, that's it, we're out.
Bloody hell.
This is about keeping us sane.
Don't know why I'm so emotional.
You have to laugh at this point.
has never been stronger.
But in travelling over,
are we missing the joys
of journeying through?
Canada. The second largest
country in the world.
From Pacific to Atlantic Ocean -
flight time seven hours.
But could you successfully navigate
this gruelling 16,000km route
at ground level...
...all for the price
of doing it by air?
Five pairs of ordinary Brits
are about to undertake just that.
Run! Go, go, go. go- 9°!
In a demanding
and challenging race...
All I'm saying is I'm going to die.
We're all going to die.
...they'll head deep into the wild...
Oh, my God, the sea is ice.
...cross vast prairies...
This is awesome. Road trip!
...soar high into the Rockies...
just once in a lifetime, innit?
If we see a bear,
I'm going to kill you.
Aah!
...to the very edges
of civilisation...
We are going to go into
the remote wilderness here.
We can't get a bus out of here.
We can't get a train out of here.
...without smart phones or bank cards
and with a limited budget.
It's dark, it's raining.
We've got no money.
We are going to have to find
a car share. I don't like this!
They'll need charm...
Parlez-vous anglais?
Mission accomplished.
...hard work...
We're absolutely brassic.
We can claw all the money back.
Yeah. We'll work.
...and ingenuity to get them through.
I can give you a ride.
Are you going to kill us? No.
Have they got what it takes
both physically...
It's just the hardest thing I think
I've clone. ..and emotionally?
It's hard, but you've just made us
feel like family.
I believe in you. I know.
I just don't believe in me.
I'm not giving up.
The rewards are great...
Mother Nature at her best.
Never seen anything like it.
...and for the first team to the
finish line, a prize of £20,000.
Every second counts.
In a race... If they come behind us
I'm taking the bag off you.
...across the world.
Breathe through it.
You can cry when you're sat down.
Mid-life crisis
is going really well.
Yeah, I'm quite enjoying my crisis.
Yeah.
Five teams headed into the wild.
Stop singing!
Splashing the cash...
This is expensive but we're taking
matters into our own hands.
...got Tricia and Cathie
to Dawson City a day ahead.
It's me and you, sweetheart.
Ladi persuaded daughter Monique
to rough it.
It just goes to show that I can
suck it up when I need to.
I've got a three-bedroom trailer.
Are you going to kill us? No.
Mobeen learned something
new about wife Zainib.
I just don't get her sometimes.
To tackle the wilderness...
It is quite cool
to be in the forest.
I just don't want to see
a bear.
...Marc and Michael played it safe...
It seems super easy. Michael. Stop!
...while car sharing
brought Claudia to the brink...
Come on. This is a nightmare.
You've just got to keep working it.
...as both teams remain on the road.
Who's that? That's Kev.
It's Kev and Claudia
In the far north
of the Yukon territory...
Wow.
All this vastness.
...the second checkpoint
in the Race Across Canada.
This last week has been
tough at times,
and I think this makes it worth it.
It makes it worth it, yeah,
exactly what I thought.
Now the engines are fully burning,
I kind of feel like
I'm really to get going.
Bit nervous, cos I don't know
where we're going.
For the teams already in town...
I'm in need of a drink, Dad.
...a 36-hour break
before they can move on.
Here's to the second leg, clone.
Second leg, clone.
I'm hoping the next leg
we don't have to go up,
because, A, it's colder,
B, it's more remote.
There's nothing there except polar
bears. Exactly, so I don't want...
No, there's no polar bears
in the Arctic.
There are polar bears in the Arctic.
Oh!
About to learn
their next destination...
...the first team into Dawson City,
Tricia and Cathie, are first out...
Oh, l00k at that.
...with a 25-hour head start
over their nearest competitors...
Oh, my God.
Let's go, let's go, let's go!
...and two teams yet to check in.
Dad, just slow down. Come on.
If they come behind us, Marc,
I'm taking the bag off you.
If you hadn't noticed,
I'm not good at running.
Bombay Peggy's, just here, Marc. OK.
Fourth.
We're not bottom, we're climbing,
we've still got six legs to go.
More than enough time
to catch up on people.
I am happy to be here
at Dawson City.
I am not happy to be fourth
because I want to be bloody first.
I can't hide
the competitive side of me.
You ready?
Let's do this.
Third check point is Banff.
At least I know where it is.
Do you? Yeah. Good girl.
Perched in the Rocky Mountains
4,500 feet above sea level
the highest town in Canada, Banff.
A picturesque resort set amongst
jagged peaks and glacial lakes,
such as Lake Louise, world renowned
for its tranquil, turquoise waters.
The third checkpoint is 2,700km away
in the province of Alberta,
and on this leg,
there is a need for speed.
"The team that reaches there
in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
Yeah, but we've got 48 hours
on the others.
25 and two places haven't come in.
The threat of elimination means that
every decision counts.
Their first challenge will be
to get out of the Yukon
and back to civilisation
by joining the Alaska Highway south.
Next to no public transport
means teams face a stark choice.
Hire cars are costly,
endangering race budgets,
while car sharing,
although potentially cheap,
can be slow and unreliable.
Obviously we had that big spend
with the car, we are over budget.
We've got to be careful, haven't we,
this one? We do have to be careful.
We can hitch as much as possible.
Then the teams will need to choose
the best way to approach Banff,
by traversing the Rockies
themselves,
or by circumventing them, passing
through Alberta's major cities.
Right in the middle of the Rockies.
Oh, my God, that's awesome.
If we did go down the city route,
the transport's going to be
more reliable,
but I'd hate to come so close
and not actually
come through the Rockies,
that would... I'd be gutted.
It's got to be done.
Cos if we go to Edmonton, it's going
to be like going to Cardiff.
We need to get out of Dawson
as quickly as we can.
As quickly as possible, yeah.
I think people will
underestimate us.
You got your little trusty sign
saying safe haven't you?
I have, actually. Good girl.
When you get to a certain age,
especially women,
we do become invisible.
You know, they do say, "Women
of a certain age shouldn't..."
Ugh. really?
We're not going to be eliminated,
there's no chance of it.
I'm really confident in us
as a team. Definitely.
Ancl I do quite enjoy
proving people wrong. Mmm.
I quite enjoy that.
I wonder if you could help us,
we're looking to try and get down
to Whitehorse today. Good luck! OK!
Last to arrive into Dawson...
Ah, fifth. Shame, but that's the way
the cookie crumbles, innit?
...Claudia and Kevin,
54 minutes behind Marc and Michael.
Whoa, that was hard work wasn't it?
Yeah. Did you use a car? No.
We used a car. You used a car?
Oh, did you? Yeah.
How did you get up here, then?
We hitchhiked the whole way.
Oh, my God!
They actually rented a car.
You know, we clone it
on our own two feet.
There's only 55 minutes in that,
and we've still got that money
in the bank, still in the race.
Oblivious to the impending
elimination,
both teams must wait 36 hours
before setting off on the next leg.
Due to leave,
25 hours behind the race leaders,
Monique and her father Ladi.
But they're nowhere to be seen.
I don't know where they are,
that's the thing.
Leapfrogging them,
Zainib and Mobeen.
"The team that reaches there
in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
This is the round that we...
Splash the cash.
We can always hire a car.
We need to get out of Dawson City
today, don't we? Yeah.
Let's get out. Cos the need
for speed is essential.
Are you heading to Whitehorse,
by any chance?
No. No, no.
The nearest car rental options
are in the Yukon's capital.
I'm excited. I don't want to come
last that's all that matters,
stay in the game. We are going to be
very competitive.
Ancl we can get competitive
with each other.
Normally it's to do with things
like...
Well, normally it's like
who's right...
I'm right
versus whether you're right,
and that's like a major competition
that's ongoing forever more.
Yeah. But usually I'm right.
Have you got any good tips
whilst you're car sharing?
Don't stink. Don't stink, yeah.
Yeah, and don't talk too much.
That's what I've been telling
you for eight years. I know.
And you're like,
"Oh, you can't change me."
I think we both wear the pants.
Like... What?
We do, like, there's not one
person that wears the trousers
in the relationship and it...
It changes.
Excuse me, sir, just wondering
if you're headed to Whitehorse?
Yeah, I probably could.
Yeah? Boom!
Smashed it! Smashed it.
We've lost a big amount of time
on the ladies that have come first,
who, er... Who are...
Who are really nice,
they're called Tricia and Cath,
they got in on Monday.
He's boring the arse
off of Cody right now.
Cody, tell us about yourself.
On their way north
in the previous leg,
Zainib and Mobeen struggled
to get out of Whitehorse.
That's a bit cool.
Follow me guys, come on in.
Let's have a look.
Hoping to avoid the same fate
heading in the opposite direction,
they get the local lowdown
from hostel owner Sarah Lee.
Why don't we, in the morning...
Yeah.
...phone some of the RV places
and see if they have a haul back
that needs to go back?
So, they may have an RV
that has to get back to Edmonton.
Oh, wow.
So, then you can take the RV back to
Edmonton for them. Is that a thing?
For free? It is, yeah. We love it.
Haul backs enable hire firms to move
their vehicles between branches,
sometimes in exchange
for free rental and fuel.
Oh, my God. If we get an RV
we don't need to bed and board,
cos you can sleep in the bloody RV.
It could be game changing.
You can completely drive from here
to Edmonton in 28 hours,
if you don't really stop.
If the... If the RV comes through...
Keep a level head... I know, yeah.
..cos if you get too excited...
You get excited, and you crash down.
...you're open to extreme
disappointment.
But they're not
the only team in town.
It hurts when I stand up.
I want you to rest up your leg
more than anything, yeah? Yeah.
Back in Dawson... "The team that
reaches there in fifth place
"will be eliminated from the race."
Shit.
We've got a hell of a lot
of catching up to do,
if we've got any
chance of making it.
Next to get going, Marc and Michael,
over 45 hours behind
the current race leaders.
You've really got to push as hard as
you can on this one. I'm going to.
He... I am competitive. He's more
competitive than I am, I'd say.
Going to the gym,
when I used to run on the treadmill
I used to have, like, private wars
with people, without them knowing.
That is a long way to go. I mean,
this would have been an ideal time
to have a car, wouldn't it, but...
It's going to be so expensive.
Yeah, that's why
we need to get a lift this morning
so that we can get to Whitehorse
early afternoon
and then we go straight down to
Watson Lake. We need to move quick.
I'm anxious, I'm nervous,
I'm under pressure.
It's a challenge to get out of this
city, it's kind of the Dawson vortex
and I've had friends who haven't
been able to get out for months.
But me and Micky, I think we're in
a really good place,
and beginning to gel as a team,
and I feel like this could be the
beginning of something.
I'm just praying we get a lift.
If we was here all clay
it would be soul destroying.
54 minutes later...
I think we knew
the elimination was coming. Yeah.
And we're in fifth place at the
moment, so, urn... Doesn't bode well.
...Claudia and Kevin
start the elimination leg
having spent more of their budget
than any other team.
We've blown the budget
on the first two legs,
but we could catch up
by renting a car.
So, pick up a hire car
at Whitehorse, down to Edmonton,
drop off the car. That would be crap
from my perspective,
because I would really like to see
Lake Louise,
which is on the other side.
This is the knockout stage,
all right? Yeah,
but also please be aware that
that is the one place
that I wanted to go
since we started this trip.
Right.
Kevin's objective,
the city of Edmonton,
is on the other side of the Rockies
to Claudia's must-see Lake Louise.
If common sense prevails
as it should do,
and if we do see an opportunity
to get in front of the other racers,
then I think we'll take that.
But then equally if there's
an opportunity to see something,
then I want to take that.
We've got the hire car,
so we need a paid job definitely,
cos that paid job will hopefully pay
half of what we're going to spend.
I know her brain is fantastic,
full of great ideas but...
...this is a different ball game,
this is about
using your life skills.
This is serious shit,
get rid of the heart,
now start thinking with our brain.
My clad always has to have the last
word, always thinks that he's right.
We'd better get through
if we're doing this,
because I'm missing out on the one
thing I came to Canada to see. OK,
but that's what I'm saying is,
we can't afford to go there.
I really hope that on this trip
he'll listen to me
and hopefully make some
joint decisions on this.
So we're definitely heading
to Edmonton, yeah?
A quick start to Kevin's plan.
Honestly, we're so grateful,
so grateful. Absolutely perfect.
A ride south with
Catholic Missionary Miriam.
So, how have you guys
camped your way through the Yukon?
I mean, you know,
we did it for a few nights,
the nice thing is we're going south
now, so it's going to warm up a bit.
You're welcome just to
camp at my place. Really?
In the yard, yeah, that's it.
Definitely like to take you up
on that offer!
440 km away...
Morning! Are you heading
to Fort Nelson?
If you can cover the fuel,
I'll get you down there.
That's fantastic.
...Tricia and Cathie have managed
to car share to Watson Lake,
aiming to stretch their lead
even further.
Give me half an hour...
Yeah, great. I'm Cathie. I'm Barry.
Hi, Barry, nice to meet you.
But he said give him half an hour.
Which car is it? I don't know.
What's his name? Barry.
Ah, brilliant Barry.
Is that him?
No.
And he hasn't come out? No.
He might be in the loo. OK.
There was a guy who came in
called Barry.
He was here, but he left
about half an hour ago,
maybe he was just
pulling your chains.
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.
Perhaps he was just
pulling our chain.
But it's critical for us
to get a lift,
because it's an elimination round.
Every hour that we stay here...
ls every hour that they're going to
catch up with us. ..is every hour
that somebody's going to gain.
Ancl then that's it for us.
Eager to hunt
Tricia and Cathie down,
the prospect of a free set of wheels
to Edmonton...
It's going to save us
a shed load of dough.
...has Mobeen champing at the bit.
We have a few that need to go
down south pretty quickly.
Yeah, yeah, we can do that.
What are there conditions?
Do we need to pay or...?
Since you're doing us a favour, we
can give you 100% discount. Amazing.
Yeah, we can reimburse you the fuel
when you get back. Really?
There's a couple of things wrong
with it, but... That's fine.
Safe to drive, right?
Safe to drive, yeah.
It is missing a tyre right now,
but I think we can probably
slap one together,
so I would say
we need a couple of hours. OK.
It is what it is, yeah, perfect.
Cool. Thank you.
You're feeling smug, aren't you?
Look at you, you've got your smug
face. No, I'm not feeling smug!
I'm not. Ah, look, it's Ladi! Ladi.
How you doing?
Yeah, good, good, good.
Monique's injured herself.
Oh, no, is she OK? Pretty badly.
We're going to have to get
a vehicle. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And Cath and Trish are, like...
They're miles ahead. Smashing it...
They've got a jump on us big-time.
Take care.
We thought we had outsmarted him
there,
but, nope, they're just as
on it as us.
I mean, it's really good
that we've got all this for free
and we've got a guaranteed ride
up to Edmonton,
but it looks like it's going to be
very close this leg.
We need to be taking this
a lot more serious,
this is not a jolly any more.
That's what I'm thinking.
Are they going to get the same deal
as what I've got? That's the thing.
Whoa! Things are heating up.
Holed up a few blocks away, Monique.
I fell down the stairs
and I've hurt my foot,
I needed to go to the hospital, and
it's turned out to be six stitches,
so I can't really run,
I can just about walk.
Her injury means
she and father Ladi
left the checkpoint three
and a half hours later than planned.
Me and Dad, I think, have just sort
of got into the swing of things.
It would be so, so annoying
if we got eliminated now.
Hello, father. Hello, daughter.
Give me some good news.
Look out the window.
An RV? How much was it?
Nothing. You're joking!
Whoop-whoop!
I do honestly put my clad on this
pedestal, I think he's my superhero.
And it's taking us
all the way to Edmonton.
Sick!
Whenever I'm scared, I'll call Dad.
Whenever I'm in danger,
I'll call Dad.
I say in danger but, I mean, like,
if my tyre's flat or something,
I'll call Dad.
There's a bit of a caveat, yeah?
Oh, God.
It doesn't have windows.
Are you joking? I'm not joking.
I encourage that, I'm like,
"If you're in trouble,
"you call your dad first, yeah?"
But I think there is
a danger in that sometimes
because there is that over reliance.
I mean, it has a front window
and windshield and everything else
like that, but some of
the back windows... not there.
Road trip, road trip.
We've paid nothing for it,
and accommodation-wise, look how
much we're going to be saving
over this, just the three days
having this.
It is a shame
about the windows, though.
Oh, my God! It's cracking, Dad.
Oh, right, OK. Urn...
Oh, wow!
They haven't even used duct tape.
This is a disaster.
As Ladi's bargain banger stalls...
Got a temporary fix on it, let's go.
Well, why did he give us
the one without windows?
It's on us now to make time back.
...rivals Zainib and Mobeen
ease into second place.
This is awesome, road trip!
Is that Ladi?
Nah, no broken windows.
Ah, that's going to be quite chilly
at night.
Poor Monique, she was already
struggling with the camping.
Not see any moose yet, Dad.
Nope. And I don't really want
to encounter a moose,
not with the windows like that.
Oh, my God!
We are screwed.
I mean, we're screwed already,
I mean, look at the time.
This race is about growing,
you know?
There are things that I've not
necessarily been able to teach
Monique yet so being eliminated now
is not an option for us.
The sun did not dry off
the tent this morning
so Dad's using his face flannel
to dry off the remains.
After a night in missionary Miriam's
yard, Kevin is on a mission.
I know the car hire is expensive,
but this is a must for us,
we're in fifth,
we need to get back into the game.
Thank you so much for letting us
stay last night,
it was just absolutely lovely.
Oh, it was my pleasure.
We now need to get a hire car
for the clay.
I can help you look, if you'd like?
Yeah, that would be amazing. OK.
Sorry for the mess.
That's all right, don't worry.
We can have a look here.
So for Whitehorse...
No cars available.
They're almost always sold out
at this time.
One thing, if you want to
consider it, is I have an uncle
who lives in Spruce Grove,
which is just outside Edmonton.
Right. So, if you were considering
this you could use our van,
drive it to Edmonton,
drop it off at my uncle's,
but, I mean,
it's completely up to you.
But how would you
get your car back, though?
Oh, my uncle is driving back
in, er, two weeks. Really? Yeah.
That's actually a complete
game changer for us.
OK, well, I mean, I don't... No, no,
no, as in, in an amazing way,
in the sense of how much that was
going to cost us
in terms of our budget, so. Yeah.
SHE SPEAKS FRENCH
He says it's completely fine.
Is this really happening?!
An offer they can't refuse -
their own set of wheels to take them
almost 2,000km to Edmonton.
What a fantastic option
that we've got now. I know.
That can save us so much money.
So, there's a particular with the
trunk, er, you have to keep it open
with a snow broom, but it usually
holds well, there you go. Perfect.
We'll look after your little baby
for you and, um... Have fun.
Thank you, thank you so much.
Ancl we're off.
Let's rock and roll. Bye!
I just cannot believe the kindness
of people,
and this is beyond anything
that I would ever have dreamed
of anyone doing.
I just... It's just bloody mad.
Over 1,000km closer
to the checkpoint...
I think we're just on the top edge
of the Rockies now.
...Tricia and Cathie are first
to enter the province of Alberta.
Oh, wow! Look at that!
Its western border
shaped by the Canadian Rockies,
part of a colossal mountain range
that stretches all the way
to New Mexico.
Before they ascend
into the mountains, a pit stop.
We are proud to welcome you
to the Grande Prairie Stompede!
Hi.
England. UK.
Thank you! Thank you!
In the late 19th century,
the area's pristine grass lands
drew great cattle drives
from the United States.
This cowboy past is celebrated today
by the Grande Prairie Stompede.
Wow, you can feel
the floor going...
It is absolutely crazy here.
I really don't understand
what's going on.
To help balance the books...
We get all this wet bedding out,
we want to keep it clean
and fresh in here.
...the girls have agreed to give
a helping hand
to chuckwagon racer Derek.
Big piles, and they're all boys
so they're a messy bunch.
We did overspend on the last leg,
hiring a car.
I think we're still in the race.
Oh, we're definitely.
We've just got to keep moving...
Yeah. ..but also enjoy it. Oh, yeah.
Oh, my hot flushes are literally
burning in the stomach.
This is actually, like,
being on fire.
I hate going through the menopause,
but you've just kind of got to
suck it up and get on with it.
I'm absolutely loving doing this
with Cathie at this age,
cos we can appreciate it more.
If I was 18, 19, I'd be like,
yeah, let's go pubbing,
let's jump on the rodeo,
but not actually appreciate it,
and I wouldn't do it with anybody
else but Cathie. I couldn't.
She'd kill me for starters.
We'll haul her to the poop pile.
OK. Ah!
Tricia and Cathie first met aged 13,
when Cathie's family
moved from Plymouth to Aberystwyth.
I was really worried about
that first clay in the new school
because I'd been bullied previously.
I didn't know whether I would
make friends and I remember
I went back home,
and I just burst into tears,
and my clad was mortified,
and he was like, "What's the matter?
What's the matter?"
And I said,
"I had a really nice clay."
Ancl obviously with Trish it became
a very special friendship.
It was a magical time. It was.
Still is now. Yeah, yeah.
I love these horses,
they're just so majestic.
I-I-I like them from afar.
So that's Bugsy
and he just wants to say hello.
Yeah, yeah, he'll give you
a scratch. If we were at home,
she would definitely not
go anywhere near a horse.
This is one of the...
Oh, he's looking at me weirdly.
He's got a funny eye, that's why.
There you go. Hello. Quite warm.
It's nice.
It's fantastic and I'm so pleased
that she's able to see more
than she thought she was going to.
She surprises me every clay.
You did it! Well clone.
I'm proud of you.
Are you heading to Watson Lake
at all? No, OK, thank you.
In danger of losing touch
with the other teams -
Marc and Michael,
looking to get to Watson Lake.
Our budget's really quite tight.
If we were to get a cab it's going
to cost over $1,000. Yeah, I know.
There might be
a ride down for you tomorrow.
Yeah, that would be great.
My brother-in-law is from Watson
and he's going to be heading
back there tomorrow. OK.
I live about 5km from here,
come out there and, er,
hang out with me
for a little while, if you want.
Let me get my propane and... Yeah,
sure. ..we can get going. Thank you.
A lift tomorrow with Larry's
brother-in-law Sheldon
could get the boys back in the race.
Nice to meet you, Sheldon.
Michael. Michael.
While tonight, some bear therapy.
WOW!
I'm more accurate when I'm thinking
that it's coming at me.
I think I'd be less accurate
if it was coming at me,
I'd be panicking all over the place.
See, look, I'm doing it now,
cos I'm thinking about it!
Too high.
Originally from Texas,
gun instructor Larry
has lived in the Canadian wilderness
for 35 years.
If you didn't come then, probably
would have given up, to be fair.
Really? Yeah. Well, you never
give up, I've played enough sports
where you don't ever give up.
You never know.
Yeah, you're right, you never know.
Somehow gone from thinking we're
going to be stuck in Whitehorse
for a week to meeting
that one person
and being fortunate enough
for them to help us.
I'm shocked and happy all in one.
Going to have some moose, eh?
I haven't had moose before.
Do you mean... You actually mean
the meat, don't you?
To me a mousse is like
a chocolate mousse!
THEY LAUGH
Marc's all right,
he feels relieved that we've got
this lined up for tomorrow.
He's able to accept that
and be happy with that,
but, for me, we're not
moving fast enough.
Think they're definitely
the nicest ribs that I've ever had.
Yeah. Oh, mama.
And even though this is
the right decision,
I'm just worried that we're
kind of losing pace with everyone.
Bear spray's good but, you know,
really should be packing,
you know, a gun or something, right?
Why are you telling me that?
I'm just letting you know.
You're just letting me know what?!
That, you know...
Bear spray doesn't work?
As the brothers wait it out...
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Look at that! Ah!
...Claudia and Kevin snake around the
jade green waters of Muncho Lake.
Wow. Are we camping in this tonight?
Look at that view.
Let's get the tent out.
That's it, just...
There we go, beautiful.
Christ.
Yeah, maybe not quite that position.
You all right? LAUGHING: Yeah!
I don't think there are many people
that will be lucky enough
to say that they've woken up
to a view like that.
This is what makes you
want to come to Canada.
It's going to be
a fresh one tonight.
Feel like this is
commitment to the budget.
It's all money in the bank,
innit, eh?
Ancl the thought of seeing
Lake Louise,
OK, it might not happen,
but, yeah, I've always wanted to do
something like this
and it's just nice
to do that with Dad.
There's a calm between us now,
and we're living in the moment.
You know, Christ,
we are bonding again.
Right, here we go again.
Here we go again, yeah.
Aiming to get themselves moving
once more, Tricia and Cathie,
backing themselves to approach
the checkpoint through the Rockies.
Are you going anywhere near jasper
at all today?
I'm actually not, but I am willing
to take you guys there.
Oh, my God, that would be amazing.
But I want to know
what your guys' budget,
because with how
the fuel prices are,
it's expensive to travel
back and forth. Yeah.
Is 600 OK for you guys?
600? 600? Really?!
We're nowhere near that figure.
We've spent 600 already this week
so I think maximum we could do
is 200, you know, that's...
That's the closest we could go,
really, isn't it? Um...
Bear with me. Are you OK?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just...
Yeah, it's fine.
The shock of that,
sort of a kick to the guts.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting that.
No, I wasn't.
I've been, I guess
pretending to be confident,
pretending to be something I'm not
whilst asking for a lift.
But you get to the point where
you're like, do you know what?
I'm clone, I can't do that any more,
I can't be that version of me.
We'll find another lift.
Yeah we... We'll get there.
Yeah, we will. We will. Yeah.
Let's hope something comes up,
cos we can't be here tonight,
we can't get stuck here tonight.
We need to stay in the race.
While the leaders sit still...
I had a dream that Cathie quit.
Why? Car sharing and trying to find
rides is too hard for her.
...two teams are hot on their heels.
I lose track of the clays. Same here.
200km behind them...
We are motoring now.
...Claudia and Kevin
are approaching Fort St john.
What does that mean?
There is a handbook in there,
can you just get that out and have
a look for me? It's all in French.
Tyre pressure, I think.
After two days solid driving...
I am draining out the bodily fluids,
of which there's lots of it.
...Monique and Ladi
have reached Grande Prairie.
In all honesty, I would have liked
to have got further,
but I can only be so many hours
on the road.
But a break from driving does not
mean a break from the race.
Ooh, there's a tampon wrapper
on the floor.
There's nothing wrong
with cleaning at all,
there's a long line of people
in our families that have cleaned
for a living and it's just something
that you just have to do sometimes.
Following up on an ad
in the job's directory,
they're pulling a shift
at a local barbecue joint
in exchange for some readies
and potential perks.
This means that if we need to have
a great push at the end
to get to Banff, then we'll be able
to splash the cash to get there.
And, hopefully,
we will be fed barbecue.
Amazing.
It's not the worst, but my foot's
really, really hurting.
Sit down, I just don't want you
on your feet too long.
Monique is moving into another phase
of her life,
she's finding her feet in terms of
her career and world of work,
before you know it, she might
be getting engaged and married
and children, and then, you know,
that time with her
will not be the same,
it will be a different dynamic.
If you want me to do some, let me
know, we can take it in turns.
I think this race will be
almost like a last hurrah, just us,
while she's still my princess.
This is unreal.
Oh, my God, that tastes so good.
I want her to be independent,
I want her to be fearless and strong
and think that she can just
conquer the world
and do anything by herself,
but to know I'm there in the wings.
Ready? Yeah.
I'm stuffed.
I'm hoping the other contestants,
they're still behind us
we don't want a foot race at the end
because... we'd probably lose that.
I'm quite excited about this, I've
never been in a Winnebago before.
Oh, they're wonderful. just great.
Currently in last place, Marc
and Michael are back in the game.
I'm glad you're coming with us.
I think we're glad.
OK. I'll tell you afterwards.
They've landed a lift of 500km
with Paula and her family.
Oh, my word, look at that.
There's too many! Oh, wow.
86 bison so far. 86? Yeah.
And I hadn't seen a bison
until today. That's mad.
Feels good being on the road.
Feel like we've just sort of
figured it out.
It's really cosy in here, isn't it?
It is.
Especially if you're sitting
by a handsome man. Oh!
Did you like that?
Yeah, that was nice.
A bear.
Make a note of that, Michael, yeah?
That's your responsibility
when you sit in the front seat.
He's got it.
Winding me up.
Just cos he's older
doesn't mean he's in charge.
Our dad made us quite competitive
when we was younger,
and we ended up being pitted
against each other all the time,
which then made me hate him,
cos he was good at everything.
I was only good at eating.
Well, you had some qualities.
If it was football, Dad would put us
on two different teams,
knowing eventually
we'd play each other.
The other sport was tennis,
he trained Michael to be a
double backhander drop shot player
and trained me to be
a forehand hard server,
so... completely opposites
working against each other.
Unfortunately, it's also had
a knock-on effect
with who we are as people.
My dad passed away when I was 20
and then Micky went off to uni
and I stayed behind,
but never dealt with the whole
losing my dad,
I just put it into
the back of my head
and me and him just didn't spend
time together.
We didn't talk to each other
about it, we just left it.
So, this is kind of like
healing for you both?
Yeah, this is 16 years
in the making, I think.
Bye-bye. Best of luck. Take care.
After 20 days racing,
the brothers decide to bed down
in the great outdoors
for the first time.
There's not going to be many bears
round here, it's a populated area,
so for you, it's a good first
introduction to camping.
Yeah. Yeah? Yeah.
Just do it here? Yeah. Yeah.
Hey, guys, do you know
this is a RV only spot?
Is it? Yeah. Yeah.
Oh! Ancl so it begins.
Today's been a really good clay.
Met some more great people,
travel led far,
so we've clone well with the race.
Still got that niggly feeling
of we don't want it to end now
cos I feel like we're getting the
hang of it.
We've clone it. You've clone it.
You did it with me,
I couldn't have done it without you.
At night, I'm going to padlock it
with my padlock.
I'm not a fan of padlocking
ourselves in, Marc.
I don't want to be dragged out.
How are we going to get out?
We're not padlocking ourselves in,
that's silliness. Oh, OK.
We're right next to a forest.
Do you think a padlock is going
to stop a bear? I don't know.
With big sharp claws. Rrr!
Ahead of the boys...
We'll stack one side and then
we'll, er, make a space there.
...Claudia and Kevin come to a halt
in Fort St john.
Founded in 1794, the oldest colonial
settlement in British Columbia.
First paid job in three weeks.
Put two hands on there,
bend down properly, bend your knees,
keep your back straight. Yes.
Ow, Dad!
That literally went into my knee.
So clumsy. No, you are clumsy.
What, for being here?
Despite a free set of wheels,
their hobbled budget is now
close to half its original size,
making the prospect of paid work
at a craft brewery too good to miss
for former publican Kevin.
So normally in the UK when we
deliver beer, we stack like this,
yeah, and that way...
Well, this teaches me something!
That way it won't slide off
the rail, you see?
My dream was always to have
a little village country pub
and my wife at the time,
yeah, we made the pact,
we sold the house,
and we made a brilliant go of it.
Seven clays a week, 24 hours a clay,
there is no getting away from it,
you are just committed.
One of the things you miss out
on being a publican, you know,
family birthdays,
friends' birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries, everyday parties,
a barbecue that's going on.
Raising your child
ever cross your mind?
Ancl raising a child, yeah,
that comes into play.
Um, well reminded there.
I loved it, building the castle,
building the business dream.
Morning.
You having a Guinness?
No problem, yeah.
Thing is, I don't think it ever
leaves you, does it?
Well, it doesn't leave you,
it's just... just engrained.
After the divorce,
I lost the business,
I lost everything I had,
it was devastating.
I was living on
beans on toast again.
Hello, mate.
Hello, you, can I get you a drink?
He does carry a lot of pride
and rightly so, like,
the business that he and my mum
set up was incredibly successful.
But, for me, that's not really what
matters, it's about spending time
with your child growing up
and creating memories that way,
and I think that probably hurts him
if he actually thinks about it
too much.
I guess that's why it's nice now,
spending time with him
and creating new memories.
We've actually achieved quite a lot
today for the longevity of the race.
We've given it our best.
Made a spelling mistake.
After 22 and a half hours
without advancing their race...
What?
Really? What?
I'm going to cover the gas.
You're kidd...
We're happy to put
some money towards it. Yeah, yeah,
it's going to cost a lot
of money for gas,
but I'm going to cover one
trip of the gas. Oh!
Oh, my gosh, you're amazing. Ah!
Tricia and Cathie have resurrected
the potential ride to jasper
by finding another passenger
to share the expense.
We're going to jasper.
We're going to jasper.
Can't believe it. I could cry.
Wow. This scenery is incredible.
It's spectacular.
So glad we chose this route.
On the other side of the Rockies...
So, we're in Edmonton? Yeah,
I think we need to try and find
an RV place now.
We can even ask people, like,
where's the nearest RV place
to drop this off?
Do you want to pull into the
McDonalds and figure it out,
rather than going further
and further into the city?
I'm tempted just to keep going down
this road and looking for a sign.
Rising unexpectedly
out of the wilderness,
North America's northernmost
large city,
the capital of Alberta, Edmonton.
A perfect place to spot the
Aurora Borealis in the wintertime,
and in the summer enjoy
up to 17 hours of sunshine a day.
This is it. Done 2,000km which is
the longest I've ever driven
in 48 hours, really.
It's within striking distance
of the checkpoint -
but Zainib and Mobeen will have to
cover the final 400km
under their own steam.
Can I hand you the keys back?
I've emptied the sewage,
the important thing, eh? Perfect!
All we've been doing all clay
is racing, basically.
Last two clays we've just
been driving. Yeah.
We need a bit of a break,
and so while we're in the city,
if we've got a chance to earn some
money back, we may as well do that.
Edmonton is a city of immigrants,
making up close to a quarter
of the population.
The first Chinese
settled here in 1890.
We want to show you how to mix
the dough. Oh, perfect, yeah.
Let me see your muscle. Yeah, yeah.
Mr To, I can do it. Muscle.
I can do it, Mr To.
Siu To arrived in 1978, and soon
after launched his first restaurant.
His green onion cakes are so popular
there have been calls for them
to become the official
dish of the city.
OK... Hold it from the bottom.
All of it?
Yeah, all of them.
Congratulations,
you have very strong wife.
That's why she does
everything for me.
Yeah, I tell you,
you'd better be careful.
Having met Zainib when I did,
I was always her junior,
at uni, at work, in terms of career.
Yeah. Ah, beautiful.
I was in awe of her.
Make sure they don't...
They don't stuck.
Girls better than boys.
You've had all the compliments,
I've had none.
I finished in the last 10% in my
year group in medical school,
I had to repeat my second,
third and fourth year exams.
I work under the radar,
you can take all the glory.
It was quite tough.
He's very, very slow.
Yeah. Everything he does, so slow.
Yeah? OK.
What are you doing, just watching?
I'm encouraging you.
You need to find... Find her a job.
I don't always outwardly show it,
but I don't think I could do life
with anyone other than Mobeen.
So, you guys have to
finish all this dough.
No problem.
Because a lot of people in farmers'
market, they're waiting for this.
Thought it'd be a break
from the race,
it's a different kind of race now.
It's nice to know
that you've got your person
and you've found that person
in life. It's comforting.
The husband and wife
is co-operating, yeah. Yeah.
When we put our heads together,
we actually get the job clone
and we get it clone fast.
Restaurant is a husband and wife
team, that's called a mom and pop.
Here you go, mama. Thank you, papa.
Back across the Rockies...
This is literally the last bit
to get to the checkpoint.
...Tricia and Cathie have ascended
1,000 metres to the town of jasper.
Originally a fur trading post,
now the bustling focal point to the
largest of seven national parks
in the Canadian Rockies, and just
290km from the checkpoint in Banff.
Let's just hope that we haven't
just missed the bus.
We have one bus every day,
it left at 1:35 this afternoon.
Ancl that's the only way
to get to Banff? Yes.
We're a pretty remote town.
It's an elimination round
and we need to get...
We need to get there tonight,
otherwise there's a risk that
we're going home. Oh, I'm sorry!
It's such a massive tourist area
and there's no buses.
Well, there are. Once a clay.
But it's all once a clay.
I feel like I'm swimming uphill.
We were quite smug
about having a big lead.
Are you heading to Banff? Oh, OK.
No worries, thank you.
That smugness came back and bit us.
Early night.
Because we're losing a night now,
it's given the other teams...
A chance to catch up. ..a chance...
Well, two of them will probably have
overtaken us by now.
It puts us in a quite
precarious position. Yeah.
I don't even want to think about it.
We need to get a wiggle to catch
these buses. I'm coming. I know.
The teams set their sights on Banff.
I reckon we'll make it.
PMA, positive mental attitude.
Be careful.
The last to arrive will be
eliminated from the race.
You guys have travel led a long way.
Quite far. Our mum was convinced
that we'd be here four clays
and we'd kill each other,
and we'd end up coming back
worse than we were.
Oh, well, she'll be thoroughly
pleased with you two.
We are the dark horses.
So, they've got a route Edmonton
to Calgary, not to Banff.
Where's the best place to get
onward travel to Banff?
OK, so that's $163.
Thank you so much.
On the move... So hopefully get
there as soon as possible now.
...Zainib and Mobeen
are going to Calgary,
127km shy of their ultimate goal.
I'm not sure who's going to be
eliminated this week,
it could be us.
This is anyone's game just now.
Ah!
What? Oh, for flip's sake.
Next coach to Calgary
leaves at 3:45.
From there to Banff is there
another bus that goes?
I don't know how to get you
to Banff. Today. Today. Yeah.
If we were to drive from here
to Banff,
how long roughly would it take?
Through the highway,
four hours and seven minutes.
I think we should just get a taxi.
Yeah, just get a taxi.
Thank you so, so, much.
Thank you so much for your help. OK.
We always said that our plan
was to use the money
we saved to spend
in order to get there quickly.
It's elimination,
so, do you know what?
We just have to suck it up
and get on with it.
Monique and Ladi splash 12%
of their remaining budget
to go directly to Banff.
If this was the end of my journey
today I will be very upset,
very upset.
SOOkm to the west...
It's a massive relief
to be on the bus. Huge relief.
Just hope and pray we're not last.
Yeah.
...Tricia and Cathie have found
a way out of jasper,
but only as far as Lake Louise.
We were so far ahead.
But we lost a night last night,
we haven't seen anybody.
Right, see how we get to Banff
from here.
There is a bus service. One would
have just gone, unfortunately.
OK. Are you guys in a hurry
to get there? Major, major hurry.
Yeah. Major hurry? Yeah. I don't
know if you want to run over
and see if maybe the bus is just
running a couple of minutes late.
There's no bus out here.
We need to win this race.
Come in fourth, at least.
After covering over 1,900km,
it's time for Claudia and Kevin
to wave goodbye to their wheels.
First port of call
is drop off the car.
We don't know how
we're going to get to Banff,
do not need any delays stopping us
getting to that checkpoint.
They've reached Spruce Grove,
just outside of Edmonton...
There we go.
...home to Uncle Norm.
Thank you so much,
we really, really appreciate it.
Hiya.
Now, we are aiming to get Banff
at some point today.
I'll drive you to whatever bus
station, er, you need to get to.
OK, that would be... This might be
a really cheeky thing to ask,
but I don't suppose you could
actually drive us to Banff?
Why not? Yeah? Yeah.
Amazing, thank you so much.
Absolutely brilliant.
Let's just drive to Banff. OK.
Awesome.
Ballsy? Yeah, absolutely,
but we are on our way.
Lay back and enjoy the ride, Norm.
So, your family have clone
so much for us,
we just... can't be
more thankful, really.
Happy to be sharing a bit of
a leg of your journey.
There's a big lake in Banff.
Lake Louise? Lake Louise?
It's the one destination on her tick
box that she's always wanted to do.
Well, she'll be awful close to it.
Not close enough.
There you go, $250. Thank you.
Thank you so much. You're welcome.
Nervous and anxious.
Fingers crossed not last,
cos I'm not ready to go home.
In 1883, Banff became
a resort town overnight,
when railway workers
discovered hot springs
at the base of Sulphur Mountain.
Today, the teams will need to
climb to its summit,
to sign in and avoid elimination.
BEEPING
"Proceed to the Rimrock Hotel."
Their GPS tracker tells them
how to get there.
"Head to the Banff gondola
fourth floor observation deck."
I know what the bloody gondola is.
All right, don't worry about that,
it's where we've got to get to
to finish.
Ascending over 2,000 feet
by cable car...
Oh, Jesus! Have you seen how far
we've got to go up?
Yeah, don't look at it, love,
it'll freak you out, just don't look
at it. Starting to freak me out.
Where do you think
the checkpoint's going to be?
Up a mountain.
I'm going to be hiking in my Croce!
Passing Calgary - Monique and Ladi,
90 minutes from Banff...
Mountain or not, we've got to make
it to the checkpoint,
hopefully it's not last.
Weather's fine, roads are clearing.
I'm really buzzing here,
we've absolutely smashed it.
...while Claudia, Kevin
and Uncle Norm
are about to enter Banff
National Park by the east gate.
Do we know which way you're going?
Where we going, straight on?
Uh... Banff, so west.
Have we missed it?
You've missed the exit, Dad.
Shit! Oh, God!
Oh, don't tell me we've got
to go 25km up and back again.
Where am I going? I've got no idea.
Thank you so much for
everything today. Yes, thank you,
nice to meet you, good luck.
Lovely to meet you.
You're going to make it, that's all
you gotta think... Yes, we are.
I think this is a good spot
for another ride, it's busy.
We have the chance now
to get to Banff a clay earlier.
Oh, jeez!
We come all this way and I can't...
I can't lo...
You're going to be fine.
Look at me, look at me.
I believe in you. I know,
I just don't believe in me. No.
I have faith in you,
you can do this.
Rimrock Hotel. We're doing well.
The sign says...
Isn't it easier to go down there
and walk along till we see it?
But the sign says this way. Just...
No, it's saying down there.
Steps forward.
Oh, my good God,
it swings and everything.
I won't let you go.
Are we there yet? Not yet.
I need a wee wee.
Whee! Wow! Look at that, gorgeous.
We're just going to concentrate on
the bear, all right?
I'm looking at the floor.
just looking at the bear.
OK, right, here. Right.
Oh, my God.
Hand on the book. Sweaty palms
for menopausal women, all right?
OK, come on, then.
Oh, please, please.
I don't want to do this.
THEY SCREAM!
Oh, my God, we're saved.
It is a relief.
Oh, no way! No way! Not far away!
We did pretty well.
We caught up on the girls,
I don't think we want any one
particular pair to go.
Yeah, it's awful to think about it.
Yeah.
My foot is going to balloon.
As soon as we get home,
we're going to put some ice on it.
Are you ready for a run? No.
Shit.
"Four teams have arrived in Banff,
"sadly this means you've been
eliminated from the race.
"Please await instructions
for your homeward travel."
Well clone!
Oh, my God!
This is brutal, with, um,
Michael and Marc, that's sad.
With four teams safely signed in,
Marc and Michael's time in the race
is at an end.
I'm gutted, not going to lie.
We've clone really well, this leg,
we've hitched all the way
from Whitehorse.
Fair play to the other teams.
Everyone just got there really fast.
It's been incredible
and it's pushed us
and took us to levels I didn't think
we could get to, so...
What, as brothers? Yeah, as brothers
but also, like, in ourselves.
I just felt like I had to
show you something,
cos I didn't think
I had that much to offer,
I just feel really fortunate to have
shared those experiences with you.
I'm looking forward to our lives
again at home, but together.
Aw. Hugs? Aw!
Nice, and we actually...
That was a nice hug. Yeah.
Four teams remain.
10,000km of Canada
still to be conquered.
That was the other teams'
chance to overtake. Yeah.
Yeah, but they haven't.
I know. I just...
We know when each other
is struggling
and then immediately
support each other. Beautiful.
I have to be honest, I was a bit
disappointed seeing us second,
I wanted to be first. We weren't
even close to being eliminated.
Yeah. That's what
encourages me more,
because I think we've got
so much more to give. Yeah.
It was crunch time.
I fell down the stairs,
I could have walked a bit more
carefully, but I made it.
I knew she was resilient,
but this stuff is epic.
Do you think we're getting
the hang of this? I do.
Yeah, we do, I do think we're
getting the hang of this.
It's slightly bittersweet for me,
it's tough knowing that
Lake Louise is down the road,
and I haven't made it there.
Is that what I'm going to live
to regret?
But we've now got another five weeks
to race in. I want more.
Agh! I'm getting so wet
because of you.
The teams race across
badlands and prairies...
Then there's mile after
mile after mile!
...to catch a train to the Arctic.
Oh, my God, the sea is ice.
If we don't get on that train,
then we might as well
book our flights home. What?!
Well, that's it, we're out.
Bloody hell.
This is about keeping us sane.
Don't know why I'm so emotional.
You have to laugh at this point.
