Race Across the World (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 3 - Tatacoa Desert - Colombia - full transcript
Setting off from Panama City, the remaining four teams take to the Caribbean Sea, but there are complications when a state of emergency is declared in the destination of their next checkpoint.
Reaching the
other side of the world
has never been easier.
But by flying over,
are we forgetting
how to travel through?
Mexico City, North
America's largest Metropolis,
to ushuaia, Argentina, the
most southerly city in the world...
20 hours by plane.
But could you travel
the length of Latin
america at ground level, and
all for the price of the airfare?
What have we
got ourselves into?
Five pairs of ordinary
brits are attempting just that.
Let's go!
They will cover
over 25,000 kilometers...
Moments like this,
you'll remember
for the rest of your life.
In a demanding
and challenging race, which
soars high into the andes,
crosses vast deserts,
and navigates some of the
world's most volatile regions.
He's coming over with a gun.
Have they
got what it takes...
Got no Google maps,
got no mum, got nothing.
Both physically...
Someone call an ambulance.
And emotionally?
We need a miracle
to get out of here.
The rewards are great.
This is crazy good.
This has brought
us closer together.
The first
team to the finish line
will claim the prize of
20,000 pounds, in a race...
Let's go. Let's go.
Across the world.
Excitement, adventure, trauma.
Oh my god.
Previously, five
teams battled through five
south American countries.
This is not
the best day of my life.
Hang on, where's my money belt?
Have you seen?
Back to back buses...
We smashed two
countries in two days.
Got dom and Lizzie
to Panama City in first place.
Woo!
Oh my...
No way!
When Sam
began to feel the heat...
Countries are hot, but I didn't
think it would be this hot.
I can't deal with it, I'm just
going to get a flight home.
Jo's maternal
instinct kicked in.
Anything I can do to
make his journey easier,
I will try and do.
I don't think my uncle's
put in too much hard work.
I think he's been
tossing about, to be fair.
Uncle and
nephew emon and jamiul
continue to splash the cash...
Is that
what you want?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's 107 each.
We've got to spend
to make moves.
To leave Jen
and Rob in last place.
Oh, no!
I'm a little bit
gutted about that.
I'm absolutely gutted.
But for
Michael and shuntelle...
We had
some really bad luck.
We lost our money.
The race
came to an abrupt end.
Panama City... the
second checkpoint
in the race to ushuaia.
With over 17,000
kilometers still to go,
the sudden departure
of shuntelle and Michael
leaves four teams remaining.
Lessons to be learned,
and we've got to be careful
as we kind of go forward.
We have to be more vigilant.
It's made me realize
that that could have been us.
And I'm not really
ready to go home.
We need to learn from this.
If that happened
to us, well, that'd be it,
wouldn't it?
To lose that amount
of money, it just...
It just shows how
quickly it can be taken away.
So I'll ask for
Michael and shuntelle,
we've got to make sure
we don't forget anything.
Teams can
only leave the checkpoint
in the order they arrived.
Do you want to look
after my passport, then?
The less stuff I have
to look after, the better.
Thanks for putting
the responsibility on me.
With a two hour
lead over their closest rivals,
brother and sister dom
and Lizzie are first to depart.
Being around each
other 24/7, it's quite intense.
But we're getting
used to it, I think.
Although we bickered
and argued the whole way,
we've still worked
well as a team.
After the race,
hopefully, we can
say we're not just siblings,
we're best friends, as well.
Hello.
Buenos dias.
Thank you very much.
My pleasure.
Oh!
Is that our next instructions?
Here we go.
Your third checkpoint is Quito.
I know where that is.
It's capital of Ecuador.
2,000 kilometers
away, Quito, in Ecuador...
The second-highest capital
in the world, at 2,850 meters
above sea level.
It is also the closest
to the equator.
To reach it, the teams
must travel through the cities,
jungles, and mountain
ranges of Colombia
as they enter south
america for the first time.
But there's a more
immediate hurdle...
Crossing the notorious Darien
gap, a dense area of jungle
stretching 160
kilometers that connects
central to South America.
It's considered the
most dangerous place
in the western hemisphere.
Ruled by paramilitary
groups, the teams
will have no alternative
but to navigate
around this lawless terrain.
I would have quite liked
to cross the Darien gap.
Yeah, I think
we could die, so.
Yeah.
Daily schedule
for ferries to capurgana...
9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm.
If we can get
on that 3:00 pm one,
everyone's going to
be a day behind us.
So I think it's pretty
important that we make it.
Definitely.
East of Panama
city, on the country's
Caribbean coastline,
lies the small port of tupile,
where the teams can catch
a boat and bypass the Darien
gap to enter Colombia.
In we go. In we go.
Vamos, vamos.
We're not going to
make the 3 o'clock ferry.
Why are you being
so pessimistic?
Because it's 12:30, dom.
It takes two hours
and a half to get there.
So it's going to be
3:00 when we get.
So? Lizzie: And it leaves then.
We need to buy a ticket.
There is no point getting
yourself worked up, saying
we're not going to make it.
I'm just
being realistic.
But what's the point in...
Like, because you don't know.
Ok.
Timings aren't exact
in Central America, are they?
Right.
Pretty much every
single bus, taxi...
Let's just end this
conversation now, dom.
Ok.
When we were
about 13, 14 years old,
we started fighting quite a lot.
And I think that's
because we didn't
understand each other, and the
changes we were going through.
No.
I'd say now, we
definitely argue less.
But we do
still have little spats.
Yeah.
There's the sea.
There doesn't
seem to be anything here.
We're not... we're
not friends anymore.
But I feel like, to be
that close as children,
there must be
something still there.
And I'd love to find that again.
Lo siento.
We were trying to
go to capurgana.
- Capurgana.
- Si.
Si.
Is there a ferry today?
Si.
What time?
Ok.
Oh, 3:30.
3:30.
In 10 minutes. 10 minute.
10 minutes?
Ok.
So now, your little
hissy fit in the car...
Yeah.
Seems pretty
pointless, doesn't it?
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, to be fair,
I didn't know, did I?
I feel better now.
On to Colombia we go.
Where did you think it was?
Quito.
Is it Quito?
I am a white witch.
Oh, you're so annoying.
That's so funny.
Two hours
behind the leaders,
and second team to
depart Panama City, Jo
and her 19-year-old son, Sam.
A big part of this adventure
is to spend as much time
with my mom as I can,
as she's one of the biggest
parts of my life.
You're still living at
home, but in five years' time,
you'll be doing your own thing.
So I suppose I'm grabbing
onto him before he leaves,
and having this
experience before he goes.
So we have to get a boat.
There's only three a day,
and we two have missed it.
Dom and Lizzie would
have gotten 3:00 pm.
So hold on, we're
going to be getting
the same one as everyone
else will be getting?
Potentially, yeah.
With the last boat
of the day already departed,
Jo and Sam need to leave the
comfort of the checkpoint hotel
and fend for themselves.
Oh.
It's all right.
Wouldn't choose to
come on holiday here, but.
I've seen worse.
Being stuck in Panama
city, it does mean that we're
18 hours behind dom and Lizzie.
And the others
will be closer to us.
There's nothing
we can do about it.
So it'll make it a
much tighter race.
Already en route
to Colombia, dom and Lizzie.
It's weird, because
you wouldn't believe
we're bypassing one of
the most dangerous parts
of the world, the Darien gap.
Because on the other
side, it's just loads and loads
of tiny little paradise
islands with palm trees,
white beaches, and blue water.
And it is nice just to go
in-between the two of them.
The total journey
time from tupile to capurgana,
the first town across
the Colombian border,
is eight hours.
I think we must be here.
It's pitch black.
That's all I really know.
I have literally no idea.
For all we know, we
could be in Jamaica, so.
Ooh!
There's some awesome lightning.
Are we here at capurgana?
Because it's late,
we've had to stop early.
After three
and a half hours,
the siblings have reached
playon chico, 122 kilometers short
of their destination.
I don't think this is
attached to the mainland.
Nope.
We're literally
on a little island
in the middle of nowhere.
I don't even know if
we're still in Panama, or...
Colombia.
We're in
no-man's-land, literally.
What are we going to do?
Just 383
meters wide, playon
chico is one of 378
San blas islands,
home to the indigenous gunas.
Until the 1990s, the main form
of currency here was coconuts.
I didn't... I didn't know we'd
be able to speak English here.
Oh.
Hola.
Hola.
Um, do you speak
any English at all?
No.
We're looking for
somewhere to sleep.
Do you know anywhere
where we could stay?
- Si.
- Yeah?
Ok?
Mm-hmm.
Oh, wow.
Oh, this is so cool.
Now, this is beyond what I
expected about 10 minutes ago.
Amazing.
Pay tomorrow?
Si?
Ok.
How did we get so lucky?
The only thing is, he
hasn't told us how much it is.
I think we haven't
got much option here
on this little
island, so I think...
We have to... we pay
what we're asked to pay.
Whatever the price is,
because he's done us a favor.
Yeah.
Um, we need to pay you?
Si.
Um, how much is it
for
Yeah, good.
50, is that right?
Si.
Lorenzo.
We've spent far too
much over the past two days.
Yeah.
Do you see that?
Those are dolphins.
And I'm not even joking.
Literally right there.
Oh, there!
Oh my god.
I don't want to go.
I know.
It's such a shame that we're
not staying here for longer,
to take things slow.
Third leg, here we come.
20 hours behind
the current leaders, uncle
and nephew emon and jamiul.
I think from the
start of the race to...
To now, I think our
relationship has become closer.
But we are still learning
about each other.
We have been getting
frustrated with each other
in there, I'm sure we have.
But you're wise,
you took a hard hit.
The pair have
spent the most money, by far...
Over a third of
their total budget,
with six legs still remaining.
I think that we just
need to plan better.
We're going to
have to work more,
because so far, I don't think
he's put in too much hard work.
The...
You need to have
a captain of the ship,
do you know what I mean?
Yes.
Colombia.
Too late for
yesterday's ferries...
South America, here we come.
Jo and Sam make
the 116-kilometer journey to tupile
for the first boat of the day.
We are literally in
the middle of nowhere.
I really didn't expect
there to be a border stop.
Yeah.
Well, I think they're telling
them to put the camera down.
Yeah, it's all looking
quite... they're all army...
Guns, and everything else.
Feels very much like we're
going to the Darien gap, doesn't it?
Put the camera down.
Guys, look again.
What?
He's coming over with
it... coming over with a gun.
I've never experienced
this sort of traveling before.
Nothing's ever scared me.
Polar bears scare
me, but nothing else.
What were they checking for?
I don't know. I suspect...
Must have been drugs.
There's cartels and things
going through the Darien gap,
it would be drugs and
guns they'll be looking for.
I don't think they're
looking for Internet.
Oh, this is just beautiful.
I know.
Sam desperately
wants to see the world.
But I'm not sure he could
quite do it on his own yet.
Adios, Panama.
Yeah, peace out.
Bring on Colombia.
It would be nice for him to
find his feet traveling with me.
The best water transport ever!
From my perspective,
I think only travel
gives you that real excitement.
And I think this probably
is the last opportunity to do
a proper backpacking thing.
But you never know.
I think we must
be in Colombia, though.
Should bloody well
hope so, after a...
That took while
longer than I expected.
Seven-hour boat ride.
The gateway to
South America, capurgana
is a remote village
known for its quiet bays,
backed by dense
rainforest, making it only
accessible by air or water.
What number
country is this?
Guatemala, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama...
Seventh country.
Ola.
Hello.
We're trying to go to medellin.
Today? Today.
Today?
Yes.
Today is not possible
that you'd reach medellin
because our boats are leaving
before 10 o'clock the morning,
all of them.
Oh, there's no
roads here, is there?
There's no road.
So you can't get anywhere today?
No.
At all?
Well, yeah.
We've lost our lead essentially.
If everyone gets the 9am
boat and it arrives today,
everyone will be then leaving
at the same boat as us tomorrow.
Yeah.
I'm quite frustrated by the fact
that we can't leave here today.
But, where does
frustration get us?
No, I know.
Closing
in just 40 kilometers
from capurgana Jo and Sam.
This is very nice.
3 hours behind on the
midday boat, emon and jamiul.
I enjoy going on boats.
Got everything?
I think so.
And about to
get the last one of the day
from tupile, married
couple Jen, and Rob.
Hello.
Ola.
Capurgana
si.
So you want to sleep
on there in one night?
In one night.
Next day, go to the
capurgana it's a long way.
It's a long way?
I just didn't realize that it
would take us overnight.
Just a shame we
can't get further away.
Last isn't a good place to be.
No.
But, the positive side, we
have gained on the leaders.
That's not too bad.
It's terrible.
Wow this is rickety.
We might just have to smash
a bit more cash this next round.
But if it keeps
us in the game...
Then,
then that's...
It's all good.
It's all good, yeah.
Beneath all the trauma,
it's actually really fun.
Oh my god, the
boat flooded robby.
Here we are.
5pm.
Without the need
for an overnight stop,
Jo and Sam have
reached capurgana
where the race leaders have
been stuck since this morning.
So what's up.
Oh.
Oh my god.
Guys.
Oh.
I'm so pleased.
- It's a nice place.
- Yeah, its really beautiful.
We've been here since that time.
Oh god.
What you got there, man?
A map.
80 kilometers
away, arriving
on the island of ustupo for
the night, emon and jamiul.
We're about to come stay here.
It's got too dark.
And what we're
going to do is go up
in the morning, first flight,
and get into Colombia.
Thank you very much.
These areas are
infested with mosquitoes.
So the first time we're
putting up our mosquito nets
or trying to anyway.
Jen and Rob will
bear it down on playon
chico, where dom and Lizzie
stopped the night before.
I hope there's some
hotels on the island.
Where might we
stay for the evening?
Hostel.
Ok.
Yeah, ok. Rob: Your hostel?
- Yeah.
- Si.
Ok.
Cuanto es?
25, 25.
25, 25?
So, 50.
Yeah.
What, dollar?
Yeah.
No.
Is it just one hostel?
Yeah.
Just one?
50 us dollars for one night
in a hostel on this island?
We've been paying like six.
Can we work
here to make it cheaper?
We only have one option and
therefore we have to take it.
Uh, can we sleep in these?
Cheaper?
We don't need a room, we
just need a roof over our heads.
Don't we?
Oh, robby.
- One, one.
- One, one.
15.
So 30 together.
- To sleep on the hammocks.
- Yeah.
- Ok.
- Muchas gracias.
Muchas gracias.
Are you happy
about that? Are you...
No, I'm really
not happy about it,
but I know we've got no choice.
Well, can I get my bag off then?
Well, no I better keep
it on because there's
nowhere to put it.
This trip's going to
be really tough, actually.
Yeah.
I
just get miserable.
I mean, I'm not very
good when I'm hungry.
I'm not very good
when I'm tired.
I'm not very good when
I don't know where I am.
You don't see that
every day, do you?
We've always
been cautious when we're
somewhere that we don't know.
I just always think everybody's
trying to Rob me all the time.
Hiya.
Yeah.
A high five.
Oh I got a hit
with the locals, uh.
People generally tend to kind
of get lax on holiday and a bit,
you know, oh I'm
in the holiday spirit,
I've had a few tequilas.
Whereas, I would always pay
more attention to my bag and money.
Oh, god.
Robby, I'm so scared.
Why are you being so nice?
People aren't nice
like this in england.
It's quite awful,
actually I don't give anybody
the benefit of the doubt
which is actually really sad.
That's a shame but, yeah.
Nice to meet you.
You ok?
Beautiful name.
This trip is going to
challenge all of those things.
It is.
But you know what,
that's a good thing.
I think so yeah.
Because I
will learn to be a better person,
a different person.
Whenever in england that
would a kid come up to you
and cuddle you, only when
it was rubbing your pockets.
Putting the race
to one side for the evening,
the leading teams
hang out in capurgana.
We've been trying to
sort of relax a bit more.
We were just
intensely traveling.
And if you go all out for
this whole race, you enjoy it.
Yeah.
Ok.
Jesus, what's this?
8pm, an alert
via the team's GPS trackers.
Oh.
Good god.
What, there's a message?
Something bad's going to happen.
A state of emergency
has been declared
in Ecuador and travel to
that country is now forbidden.
Gosh.
A state of emergency
could be anything.
A war, a terrorist, a
natural disaster, flood.
With no phones
or access to the Internet,
the teams are unaware
of dramatic scenes
unfolding at their
next checkpoint
in the center of Quito.
Demonstrations have
broken out all over the city,
protesting
government cuts to fuel
subsidies and workers' rights.
With unrest spreading, an
official state of emergency
has been declared
throughout the country,
shutting Ecuador's borders and
making travel to the checkpoint
of Quito impossible.
So you can't go
to Ecuador at all?
It's quite concerning now.
As a consequence,
the third checkpoint is
now villavieja, tatacoa desert.
Where on earth is that?
Right.
Oh my god.
What a turn off for the books.
You think we should
get the map, huh?
Yeah.
The
third checkpoint will
now be in Colombia, at the
heart of the tatacoa desert.
Well that's thrown
some funds up in the air.
We might have to completely
change our direction.
To reach it, the
teams have several options.
Travel via the vibrant
cities of medellin
and the nation's capital,
Bogota, the main bus
transport hub in the country.
Or, take in the
spectacular countryside
the southwest has
to offer by going
via Cali, famous for
its laid back dance
culture and mountain views.
Well, to tatacoa desert.
Yeah.
Wherever it is.
We need to hope that
all the other teams have
gone in the wrong direction.
With routes to plan
and strategies to consider...
Do you know where
villavieja tatacoa is?
Tatacoa.
So this checkpoint
is in Colombia.
The teams retire
for the night in preparation
for the race ahead.
Ooh.
Night, love.
10am, and ready
to depart capurgana in pole
position, dom and
Lizzie and Jo and Sam.
Is that dom and Lizzie?
That's dom and
Lizzie over there.
But even earlier
starts from the others
mean surprise arrivals.
Oh my god.
Oh.
Rob and Jen.
Let's get our bags on.
No time to wait.
A bit awkward, isn't it?
Everyone seems smarter.
Same time.
The same time.
Oh.
So close, yet so far guys.
- We're leaving.
- You're leaving?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Are the both of you are leaving?
So have you heard about
the checkpoint change?
Yeah, yeah. Checkpoint change.
Really sad about Ecuador.
Excuse me, Please.
Ok.
Jen.
What?
Why are they all here?
What the hell?
Oh my god.
All four teams.
Are you going now?
Yeah, oh my god.
Oh hello, darling.
Good to see you.
Oh bless you.
You getting on
this boat, our boat?
No, I don't think so.
But it looks like we need to.
Yeah, this is the
last boat of the day.
Shit.
Two minute boat.
Elizabeth,
Por favor.
Enjoy yourself, guys.
See you later.
Samuel, Joanna.
Robby, we need
to get on that boat.
It leaves right now.
It leaves right now.
It's once a day.
So if we don't get on this,
we're stuck here till tomorrow.
Well, let's get our
passport stamped quick.
I'll do your passport.
You go and find out how
much tickets are and try and get
us on that boat to necoclí.
Rob is running down the road.
They're trying to
get us to the platform.
The boat's gone.
There's no more.
Oh my days, oh
my days, oh my days.
Billeto necoclí dos.
Dos.
Passport.
Passports I
need a passport.
Oh god, the boat is going.
I can't buy it until
I show her my passport.
Oh no. Where is it?
Where is it? Mine's stamped.
You ok? Jen: Yeah.
Oh.
There we go.
Sorry.
Two tickets to necoclí the
ferry that's going now, please.
Muchas gracias.
Muchas gracias.
I don't think Jen and
Rob are going to make it.
We've created this lead
since the start of the race
so I want to keep it.
Get out of my way.
Get out of my way.
There they are again.
Is that them?
Oh.
We're here.
Jo and Sam.
Oh, we're going.
Ok.
Adios.
Oh my days, oh
my days, oh my days.
Please wait for
me two minutes please.
You're going in the next boat.
Second boat please.
Ok.
What time does that leave?
Maybe 10 minutes.
Oh, great. Great.
Right. Muchas gracias.
The crazy thing is that
they think we've missed it
and we're here for 24 hours.
Yes!
- Woo!
So actually...
Back in the game.
We are so back in the game.
Oh, and the boys,
the boys are here.
We should probably
hide from them.
They're not going
ahead of us now.
We're in last place.
We have to stay here tonight.
Under the impression
the last boat of the day
has already left,
emon and jamiul
are left behind in capurganá.
In the morning we'll head back
out and get back on the race.
We left the boys behind.
Oh, man.
They are going to be so upset.
This is a dive shop here, is it?
Yeah,.
We can go ask for a job, then.
Might as well.
I feel really sneaky.
But then I feel really, like,
happy that I've been sneaky.
Stuck in
capurganá for 24 hours,
the boys take the
opportunity to earn some cash
at a local scuba diving school.
All this gear is kind of heavy,
so we're helping put all
the gear on our customers.
Is that ok with you?
- That's fine.
- Sounds good to me.
- Ok, let's go.
Are you actually
going to work this time,
or just make me do the work?
We'll be out in the sea, si...
It'll be nice.
I like the sea,
so I'll give it a go.
The way I've been
brought up, I've
always been told to try to
achieve the best I can achieve.
I remember in school, if I
didn't do good in my grades,
my father would just
go straight to the school
and tell my teachers to put
me right at the front of the class
to make sure I listened.
So we're going to need
help to put the gear together.
These things kind
of build up a way of life.
And that's why winning
is the best option.
If you win, you've
achieved the best.
How was that, guys?
Pretty good.
Awesome.
The last
couple of jobs obviously
I've taken a backseat and
sort of overlooked everything.
And this job is
completely different.
It was equally shared
between me and jamiul.
And we had to work hard.
We did everything
together, so I enjoyed it.
It shows that he
can put in the effort,
and he can do the work.
It's been good.
With work
done for the day...
We just asked him.
But stranded
until morning, the boys look
into their own.
How long is it from the
necoclí to villavieja tatacoa?
Cuanto hora?
Days?
Here's to neiva.
- Oh, so it's in neiva.
- It's in neiva?
It's in neiva?
Ok.
Right, we've got
our route planned.
They found
out that the fastest route
to the checkpoint is to
head via Medellín to neiva,
the nearest major
transport hub to villavieja.
Ok.
We're 24 hours behind now.
Everybody else is ahead of us.
But we're hoping to
kind of creep up on them
and take them by surprise.
I reckon we should
head to the bus station.
Head towards the bus station
to try and find somewhere to...
Why do you want to
sit by the bus station
when you can sit on the beach?
Now on the
Colombian mainland, Joe
and Sam, and dom and Lizzie.
With Jen
and Rob close behind.
All right, let's move then.
Robbie, Robbie,
Robbie, Robbie, Robbie...
What's this?
What, what?
Go that way.
The leading
teams are taking the first
bus south to Medellín.
Everyone is going now.
I think it's going to be better
to stay here and
get on a night bus,
and then we save
on accommodation.
What's your
preferred idea, then.
Get on this bus.
I think we get the 8 o'clock.
Well, we've got to.
The bus is going.
It's been quite nice
with Jo and Sam.
I've really enjoyed it, yeah.
Yeah.
But we need to crack
- Separate.
Separate.
We need to
go our separate ways.
We should really plan
where we're going to head
on to next after Medellín.
I think the more
obvious route would be
going straight down via Bogota.
Yeah.
Ok.
But we want to work.
There's a job
available in guatapé,
where you can help with the
horse-riding trips and I think
that's something i'd
really love to do because I
used to work at stables.
Which is two hours
outside of Medellín.
Lizzie's plan to
top up their budget means
a detour to the town of guatapé,
82 kilometers east of Medellín.
I'm a little bit
scared of horses.
I quite fancied
going to Cali
because Cali is the
salsa capital of Colombia.
It's a nine-hour bus today to
Medellín, and then from there,
we go to Cali.
Good?
We have a plan.
Jo is aiming
to travel straight to Cali,
420 kilometers beyond
Medellín, all on buses.
Most of the time
I'm enjoying the race.
But then quite a lot
of the time, I'm not.
It's just like you go
through highs and lows.
And I think with eight
weeks I will struggle.
Going from Panama
to Colombia on a boat,
going from the islands
and the beautiful water
was absolutely amazing.
But then stuff like doing the
nine-hour, 10-hour bus ride,
I get so bored because
there's nothing to do.
And I can't deal with that.
So it's not pleasant.
Do you think it's got
anything to do with your adhd?
It probably does.
I don't know.
I've never been able to
explain why I'm anything.
When I adopted Sam
when he was six months old,
he was very hyper.
And he was quite
disruptive at nursery.
And in fact, the
nursery owner said,
did his birth mother drink?
And I said, well, yeah, she did.
Why?
And she said, oh, I've just
seen children a bit like Sam.
We went off and did
a little bit of research
and found this condition
called fetal alcohol disease,
or fetal alcohol effects.
And it was just like
reading a story about Sam.
Because you get
frustrated, don't you?
Well, I get frustrated
that I can't explain it.
Basically, how it
affects the brain
is the wiring is just off.
If you said, you know,
don't touch that, it's hot,
he would touch it.
I'm sorry that you're
struggling with this bit.
So we'll try and get
things right and try
to prioritize what's important.
We're going to Medellín.
And is there anything
that you'd like to do there?
Well, that is where
Pablo Escobar is, isn't it?
Well, was, yeah.
I'd really love
to go to a tour of...
Ok.
Well, let's do it.
Can we do that, shake on it?
Shake on it?
Jo and Sam's new
plan, to postpone the 12-hour bus
journey to Cali and
instead take a break
from the race in Medellín.
When I was younger, I couldn't
deal with pressure or stress.
So that's when i'd
spiral off and kick off.
No one ever really knew I
had fetal alcohol syndrome,
but they knew I had adhd.
And it was a hard
thing to deal with.
On this journey, I will
just have to figure out
different ways of dealing with
the stress and the pressure
that comes in front of me.
Right.
Well, guys, this is farewell.
We'll see you in a
few days probably.
- Yeah.
- Bye, guys.
Bye.
As the teams
separate to find accommodation,
10 hours behind and just
leaving necoclí, Jen and Rob
settle in for the night.
If he said to me, do you want
to sleep in a bed right now
or do you want to sleep on a
bus, naturally I'd take a bed.
But we just have
to deal with it.
It's not ideal, is it, but if we
want to stay in the game...
Still be in the game, we
don't really have a choice.
This is our best
option, I think.
Yeah.
And we are much happier for it.
We're enjoying it a lot more.
Well, I'm absolutely
exhausted and can't do anything.
And he's taken his socks
off, and his feet stink.
Give it five minutes.
It'll calm down.
6:00, Medellín.
Morning.
Buenas dias.
Jen and Rob are
planning for another night bus.
Oh, where's he gone?
What the hell?
Oh, he's here.
Need
do it from Cali.
Oh, oh!
My bag is so heavy.
No, I'm fine.
Just leave me here.
Go without me!
Nestled in a
valley between the andes,
the city of Medellín, the
second largest in Colombia.
Once known as the murder
capital of the world due to warring
drug cartels in the
1980s, in recent years,
Medellín is a city reborn,
flourishing with new business,
arts, and culture.
So welcome to
Pablo Escobar district.
I will explain the mural,
the graffiti, the pictures, and
also a little bit of history.
Please, after you.
We just met the guys
on the Pablo Escobar tour.
It's a lot of money,
particularly on a budget,
but I think Sam
wants to do this.
And he's fascinated by it.
And I think, just
blow a bit of money,
and hopefully he
gets a lot out of it.
At the height
of his grip over Medellín
in the 1980s, Pablo
Escobar was one of the most
powerful criminals
in history, supplying
80% of the world's cocaine.
This is the mural of the
members of the Medellín cartel.
Over the
past couple of weeks
there's been a few
things that I've missed out
I've really wanted to see.
And finally I'm going to
see something I want to see.
So it's quite a nice
feeling that mom's
listening to me, actually.
So this was the rooftop
Pablo Escobar got killed.
Pablo tried to escape
from the back of his house,
get onto the neighbor's
rooftop, and then he got killed.
It's very chilling
to know that that's
where he got killed.
But at the same
time, it's really cool.
80 kilometers
east of Medellín...
All right, dom.
We need to find
out where this job is.
Dom and Lizzie
have arrived at guatapé.
Wow.
Oh, my god.
This is so amazing.
I wish parts of Yorkshire
were this colorful.
Often refer to
as the most colorful town
in the world, it's looked
over by the pedra del peñon,
a 200-meter granite
rock with a brick staircase
of 659 steps built into it.
In its shadow, dom and
Lizzie's job for the day.
So...
Sweeping.
Uh-huh.
Just here, or...
What's that?
I'm not sure.
So basically,
it's picking up poo.
They said it'd be fun
working with horses.
Hopefully they haven't
eaten too much today.
Ugh.
I've got horse poo on my fingers
should we just sack this off?
Do you just want me to do, dom?
Because if you've got a
problem with the job, I'll do it.
I'm willing to work hard.
Ok.
Bye.
It's Lizzie's job
choice, so I'm going
to let her clean the poo up.
What, do you want money?
Stop complaining.
I feel like coming to
guatapé, we've gone a bit
out of our way to do this.
And I know we need
to earn this money back.
But we have lost our lead now.
So I'm not really
chuffed, to be honest.
Hey!
One perk of the job...
Dom, do you want to get on?
Do you think
that's a good idea?
They're
not going to run off.
Ok.
Getting
to ride like a llanero.
Go on, dom.
A Colombian cowboy.
And then you put
your feet in the stirrups.
Are you pooing yourself a bit?
That's an understatement.
There you go.
And if you feel like you're
going too fast, just shout.
I'll stop.
- Go.
Come on.
Oh, ok.
Ok.
Oh!
So I finally
found something
that I can do better
than him, and it's
quite satisfying for me.
No, no, no.
This is too fast.
I'm going to fall off.
Ah, gracias.
50 for me.
20 for me.
I put the work in, so...
Muchos gracias.
Welcome to Bogota.
Dominating a high
plateau 2,640 meters above sea
level with modern
skyscrapers standing
next to colonial churches,
Colombia's capital,
Bogota, the lady of the andes.
Founded by the
indigenous muisca people
long before the arrival
of the conquistadors,
it is now the second most
congested city in the world.
Robbie, stop walking
away from me.
What are you doing, chick?
I just want to know
what you're doing.
We're looking for a hostel.
Well,.
Jen and Rob arrived
in the city at 6:00 am
after two long nights
spent on buses.
Hello, Buenas dias.
60,000 pesos.
Let's keep looking.
Let's keep looking for prices.
What's the matter?
We could be walking
around till 2:00 pm, couldn't we?
Let's give it till 2:00, then.
- Give it till 2:00?
- Yeah.
Well, you said 2:00.
That was a joke,
because then we could be
walking around until 2:00 pm.
All right.
Let's do that, then.
No, no, no.
No, this is ludicrous.
Almost everything is
exagerated with Jen,
I think, which is... which
is part of her charm.
I mean, i'm
absolutely exhausted.
I've not slept for three days.
I've not showered
for three days.
But at the same time,
something four days.
I would like to brush my teeth.
I would like a glass of water.
It's often explaining
that things aren't
quite as bad as they are.
The room is all yours.
- No way.
- Oh, wow.
Yes.
Oh, amazing.
It's the first bed
in three days.
I think that's how our
relationship works, really.
A dime to winning.
A wish doesn't come
true if you make it public.
Ok.
I'll make it secret, then.
Goodnight tonight's meal.
I'm eating. You're not.
For a dime?
Crikey.
They still stink.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
Having left capurganá
24 hours after the other teams,
emon and jamiul have
made it to Medellín
on an important day in
the city's football calendar.
The fans are amazing.
You can really tell the
passion for football here.
Everyone is singing
and dancing outside.
Football is probably bigger
here than it is in the UK.
Local team
atlético nacional are playing
their league rivals, junior.
The football
is my passion.
It's not jamiul's.
I've seen him play football.
He's got two left feet.
He's really crap at football.
I like the
hustle and bustle.
I like the fans going
crazy and chanting.
I'd say I'm more
of an atmosphere
fan than a football fan.
Cuanto es?
So 55,000 each.
That's our daily budget, man.
I would like to experience it.
But if it's the race or the
experience, at this stage,
I would choose the race.
You want to choose
the race over the experience?
Yes.
My uncle's put me and the
race ahead of his passion
and his wants.
And I'm quite moved by that.
So, what, should we go to
the bus station and get tickets?
While three teams
are taking well-established routes
towards the checkpoint,
the boys are looking
for a more direct
bus to neiva, the town
they heard about in capurganá.
Right now we're assuming
that everybody else
is a good 24 hours ahead of us.
But I'm hoping that we
can catch up to them.
No.
Neiva.
No.
No neiva?
However finding
this less-traveled route
is proving difficult.
I think these guys ..
Hola.
We want to go to neiva.
Neiva?
Neiva.
12.
Oh, way down there.
This'll do my head in.
Hola.
You go to neiva?
Neiva.
Quando hours neiva?
12.
So we get to neiva 8:00 am, si?
Yeah.
This is exciting.
We've just spent how much?
152,000?
150,000.
They've managed to
find an overnight bus to neiva,
a move that could help
them get back in the race.
It should be 170.
This is.
How did we get so lucky?
Apparently Cali
has the prettiest girls,
so I'm sure you'll
have plenty to look at.
She is so embarrassing.
Jo and Sam
have reached Cali.
The second largest
city in Colombia
is known as the salsa
capital of the world,
thanks to its dance culture.
Sam would just like spend money
and not actually
go in it, whereas we
do need to earn some money.
And I thought working
at the salsa bar
would be really good fun.
Having overspent
and Sam's Escobar tour,
Jo's hoping to earn
some money back
doing something she enjoys.
La matracka, a club the
historic cabrero district,
is famous for its salsa
and tango parties.
Jo and Sam's task...
Keep the tables clean and
clear the empty glasses.
It is so hard to...
I don't understand any of this.
What happened?
Sam?
Yeah, one minute.
One minute.
But Sam is struggling
with the language barrier.
I don't understand
what they're saying.
The whole place is clean.
What to do is go around
all the empty tables
and wipe the chairs.
We've done that.
Well, have you done
all these end tables.
No, you've done
those end tables.
No, I've done the ones
with glasses on them.
So you do the empty
ones and the chairs.
We're actually cleaning
stuff that's already clean.
When I can't
understand anyone,
I just feel like an idiot.
I'm out of my comfort
zone, basically.
I just hate big
crowds of people.
I feel like everyone's
watching, and I don't like it.
I can't deal with this.
It's a discomfort
I can't explain.
It's just a really
horrible feeling
that you've continuously
got, like you're on your tiptoes,
trying to figure out what to do.
I don't know what it is.
It's just me.
Sam.
What am I doing?
I am wasting my time.
I want to go now.
Darling, she's
just given us a job.
She's...
I don't care if she's
given us a job.
I know it's not a difficult job.
I'm wasting my time.
On the surface
it looks like he's
being a petulant 19-year-old,
but I don't think he is.
I just don't think he can cope.
As you know, me, I
am one big problem.
You're not one big problem.
You're complicated.
He's never been
great with big crowds.
And he feels stupid if
he can't communicate.
And I think this is probably
what some of those issues are.
I'm out of the race.
I quit.
I'm done.
Enough.
Done.
You're being ridiculous.
This might be
the end of it for us.
Grandma gave
me this to give to you.
Oh.
Do you miss her?
Oh.
Thinking of you all the time.
Hope it's going well.
Big hug to you and Sam.
That's lovely.
Well done for keeping a secret.
I just wasn't in a
good place last night.
And when I'm not
in a good place,
my easiest option
to go to is quitting.
Just had to clear my head a bit.
Happy birthday.
I don't ever like having
conflicts with my mom,
but we always get through it.
So I'm glad she's happy.
And if she's happy, I'm happy.
Did you bring me one?
Sorry, no.
You get me a drink tonight?
Yeah, it's on me.
It's on me.
On the move
again, Jo and Sam
are off to neiva,
the closest transport
hub to the checkpoint.
So yeah, back to racing.
Final, final day of this leg.
300 kilometers
lies ahead of them, much of it
along winding mountain roads.
The bus is about 30
centimeters from the edge.
Jesus Christ.
It'll take us two
days to get there.
Just approaching neiva
after our 12-hour shift.
Take the last little
sprint to the finish line
and we'll be there.
Jobs a good'UN.
After
traveling overnight
on a more direct
route, emon and jamiul
are first to arrive in neiva.
They must now
head north to reach
the third checkpoint near
the village of villavieja,
37 kilometers away.
Go on. Let's go,
let's go, let's go.
I'm hoping that
we've pulled up, man.
All depends on how
the other teams get on.
Departing
Bogota, Jen and Rob.
Also heading to neiva,
but with a plan to get ahead.
Can we get out at villavieja?
- Si.
- Si.
Yeah?
Will you shout, it's villavieja?
And then we get out?
Securing
an early drop off
could avoid a
76-kilometer detour.
This guy is
like a "Mario kart" racer.
That's good, because it
means we'll get there quick.
Yet to leave Bogota...
Dom and Lizzie.
Neiva?
Neiva.
Neiva?
It's neiva?
Neiva.
Neiva?
Oh, si.
Ok,.
Getting through
the capital's notorious traffic
at rush hour means
a slow getaway.
The traffic is awful.
No mas. No mas.
We could be arriving
ahead, just north of neiva.
So now we've got to
cross the river, though.
I don't understand how
we're going to do that.
There must be roads.
This is it?
Oh, god.
It doesn't look very "it."
Villavieja?
Si.
That way.
Gracias.
What, down there?
Yeah.
Jen and Rob
are now just two kilometers
from villavieja, but they
face a further hurdle...
The magdalena river.
This was a massive risk.
I hope it pays off.
Yeah.
We haven't saved cash, but
hopefully we've saved time.
Oh, I've seen a boat.
Do you?
A boat just crossing
the river now.
Get me on a boat man.
Holla!
We're gonna need a boat now.
Across the river...
Seems like we've
come into a little time.
- Right.
- Oh, hello.
Here we are.
Should I pull the garmin out?
Emon and
jamiul are closing in
on the third checkpoint and
are notified of its exact location
by the GPS tracker.
Proceed to bethel hotel.
16 kilometers
outside of villavieja
lies a path to the
checkpoint hotel,
at the heart of
the tatacoa desert,
named after its venomous
inhabitants, rattlesnakes.
This vast, arid area has
a Mars-like landscape,
and its position
near the equator
gives it a unique view of both
northern and southern skies,
attracting astronomers
from all over the world.
Hello, villavieja.
We're so close,
Robbie, I can smell it.
All right.
Robbie.
Be the turtle.
Be the turtle?
Don't be the hare.
Be the turtle.
Oh.
Come on.
Oh, it's warm, man.
Hola, amigos!
- Hola.
- Bethel hotel?
- Bethel hotel?
- A hotel?
Si?
You can take us now?
Go, go, go!
I'm ready to
brush my teeth, man.
I can smell the wine.
Gotta be here.
Gotta be close, man.
One moment we're crossing
a river, the next moment
we're in a desert.
Makes no sense.
I spy with my little eye
something beginning with a w.
Window.
No.
Wall.
Nope.
Oh, my god.
We're here.
I
don't see no hotel.
I can't see anything for miles.
Those buildings
in white over there.
I can't walk there.
I feel like the rubber on my
trainers are going to melt.
We are trekking through
the middle of the desert.
Ridiculous.
I thought I can see a sign.
We can see it.
Or is it a mirage?
That's got to be the hotel.
Third checkpoint, here we come.
Check in! Wait!
Check in!
Hola.
Bienvenidos a Colombia.
I see the book.
Ok.
Prepare yourself to be last.
Oh, god.
Do you want to do
the honors this time?
Do it, man. Do it.
Oh, my god!
No way.
What?
They came in first?
Ha!
Oh, my gosh.
I don't care.
Amazing.
Oh, my gosh.
I do not believe that.
Gracias.
I'll close that for you.
Thank you.
To come first, amazing.
It's an awesome feeling.
Previous legs
we were being a bit fancy.
That's why we made mistakes.
And on this leg, we've
learned from our mistakes.
We've been fortunate
with the people that we've met.
The locals have
helped us quite a bit.
Races like this can be
done on fine margins.
There is no room for error.
Ah!
12:20, two hours.
Yeah.
Yeah!
I actually cannot
believe that we
have gone from last to second.
Oh, wow.
Definitely back in the game.
Yeah.
I'm dead proud of us.
Just little Jen and
Rob from reading.
Boom, second.
Oh, if a bug or something
jumps out at me, I'm gonna...
You'll be fine.
Seven hours later.
I really can't see anything.
Hola.
Buenos noches.
Third.
Jamiul and emon came first.
Oh, that's brilliant.
With three teams
having made it to the tatacoa
desert, emon and jamiul
are now in first place,
after starting the leg 20
hours behind the leaders.
We sort of expected
to come third or fourth,
because we took a
slightly circuitous route.
I mean, the roads were just...
Horrible.
Rubbish.
Where's Liz and dom, then?
I know.
That's amazing.
I feel like maybe
if we do come last,
it'll be a good kick up
the ass for the next leg.
Might make me race a bit harder.
I hope so.
Anyway, we're not going
to have that discussion now.
Let's just go.
Ok.
Don't start, Lizzie.
- No, no.
That's why I said let's stop.
Next time...
Bring it on.
The teams plunge
into deepest, darkest Peru.
It's exhausting.
Oh, look at you!
And
the sky's the limit.
I can do this.
I can do a hell of a lot more.
other side of the world
has never been easier.
But by flying over,
are we forgetting
how to travel through?
Mexico City, North
America's largest Metropolis,
to ushuaia, Argentina, the
most southerly city in the world...
20 hours by plane.
But could you travel
the length of Latin
america at ground level, and
all for the price of the airfare?
What have we
got ourselves into?
Five pairs of ordinary
brits are attempting just that.
Let's go!
They will cover
over 25,000 kilometers...
Moments like this,
you'll remember
for the rest of your life.
In a demanding
and challenging race, which
soars high into the andes,
crosses vast deserts,
and navigates some of the
world's most volatile regions.
He's coming over with a gun.
Have they
got what it takes...
Got no Google maps,
got no mum, got nothing.
Both physically...
Someone call an ambulance.
And emotionally?
We need a miracle
to get out of here.
The rewards are great.
This is crazy good.
This has brought
us closer together.
The first
team to the finish line
will claim the prize of
20,000 pounds, in a race...
Let's go. Let's go.
Across the world.
Excitement, adventure, trauma.
Oh my god.
Previously, five
teams battled through five
south American countries.
This is not
the best day of my life.
Hang on, where's my money belt?
Have you seen?
Back to back buses...
We smashed two
countries in two days.
Got dom and Lizzie
to Panama City in first place.
Woo!
Oh my...
No way!
When Sam
began to feel the heat...
Countries are hot, but I didn't
think it would be this hot.
I can't deal with it, I'm just
going to get a flight home.
Jo's maternal
instinct kicked in.
Anything I can do to
make his journey easier,
I will try and do.
I don't think my uncle's
put in too much hard work.
I think he's been
tossing about, to be fair.
Uncle and
nephew emon and jamiul
continue to splash the cash...
Is that
what you want?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's 107 each.
We've got to spend
to make moves.
To leave Jen
and Rob in last place.
Oh, no!
I'm a little bit
gutted about that.
I'm absolutely gutted.
But for
Michael and shuntelle...
We had
some really bad luck.
We lost our money.
The race
came to an abrupt end.
Panama City... the
second checkpoint
in the race to ushuaia.
With over 17,000
kilometers still to go,
the sudden departure
of shuntelle and Michael
leaves four teams remaining.
Lessons to be learned,
and we've got to be careful
as we kind of go forward.
We have to be more vigilant.
It's made me realize
that that could have been us.
And I'm not really
ready to go home.
We need to learn from this.
If that happened
to us, well, that'd be it,
wouldn't it?
To lose that amount
of money, it just...
It just shows how
quickly it can be taken away.
So I'll ask for
Michael and shuntelle,
we've got to make sure
we don't forget anything.
Teams can
only leave the checkpoint
in the order they arrived.
Do you want to look
after my passport, then?
The less stuff I have
to look after, the better.
Thanks for putting
the responsibility on me.
With a two hour
lead over their closest rivals,
brother and sister dom
and Lizzie are first to depart.
Being around each
other 24/7, it's quite intense.
But we're getting
used to it, I think.
Although we bickered
and argued the whole way,
we've still worked
well as a team.
After the race,
hopefully, we can
say we're not just siblings,
we're best friends, as well.
Hello.
Buenos dias.
Thank you very much.
My pleasure.
Oh!
Is that our next instructions?
Here we go.
Your third checkpoint is Quito.
I know where that is.
It's capital of Ecuador.
2,000 kilometers
away, Quito, in Ecuador...
The second-highest capital
in the world, at 2,850 meters
above sea level.
It is also the closest
to the equator.
To reach it, the teams
must travel through the cities,
jungles, and mountain
ranges of Colombia
as they enter south
america for the first time.
But there's a more
immediate hurdle...
Crossing the notorious Darien
gap, a dense area of jungle
stretching 160
kilometers that connects
central to South America.
It's considered the
most dangerous place
in the western hemisphere.
Ruled by paramilitary
groups, the teams
will have no alternative
but to navigate
around this lawless terrain.
I would have quite liked
to cross the Darien gap.
Yeah, I think
we could die, so.
Yeah.
Daily schedule
for ferries to capurgana...
9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm.
If we can get
on that 3:00 pm one,
everyone's going to
be a day behind us.
So I think it's pretty
important that we make it.
Definitely.
East of Panama
city, on the country's
Caribbean coastline,
lies the small port of tupile,
where the teams can catch
a boat and bypass the Darien
gap to enter Colombia.
In we go. In we go.
Vamos, vamos.
We're not going to
make the 3 o'clock ferry.
Why are you being
so pessimistic?
Because it's 12:30, dom.
It takes two hours
and a half to get there.
So it's going to be
3:00 when we get.
So? Lizzie: And it leaves then.
We need to buy a ticket.
There is no point getting
yourself worked up, saying
we're not going to make it.
I'm just
being realistic.
But what's the point in...
Like, because you don't know.
Ok.
Timings aren't exact
in Central America, are they?
Right.
Pretty much every
single bus, taxi...
Let's just end this
conversation now, dom.
Ok.
When we were
about 13, 14 years old,
we started fighting quite a lot.
And I think that's
because we didn't
understand each other, and the
changes we were going through.
No.
I'd say now, we
definitely argue less.
But we do
still have little spats.
Yeah.
There's the sea.
There doesn't
seem to be anything here.
We're not... we're
not friends anymore.
But I feel like, to be
that close as children,
there must be
something still there.
And I'd love to find that again.
Lo siento.
We were trying to
go to capurgana.
- Capurgana.
- Si.
Si.
Is there a ferry today?
Si.
What time?
Ok.
Oh, 3:30.
3:30.
In 10 minutes. 10 minute.
10 minutes?
Ok.
So now, your little
hissy fit in the car...
Yeah.
Seems pretty
pointless, doesn't it?
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, to be fair,
I didn't know, did I?
I feel better now.
On to Colombia we go.
Where did you think it was?
Quito.
Is it Quito?
I am a white witch.
Oh, you're so annoying.
That's so funny.
Two hours
behind the leaders,
and second team to
depart Panama City, Jo
and her 19-year-old son, Sam.
A big part of this adventure
is to spend as much time
with my mom as I can,
as she's one of the biggest
parts of my life.
You're still living at
home, but in five years' time,
you'll be doing your own thing.
So I suppose I'm grabbing
onto him before he leaves,
and having this
experience before he goes.
So we have to get a boat.
There's only three a day,
and we two have missed it.
Dom and Lizzie would
have gotten 3:00 pm.
So hold on, we're
going to be getting
the same one as everyone
else will be getting?
Potentially, yeah.
With the last boat
of the day already departed,
Jo and Sam need to leave the
comfort of the checkpoint hotel
and fend for themselves.
Oh.
It's all right.
Wouldn't choose to
come on holiday here, but.
I've seen worse.
Being stuck in Panama
city, it does mean that we're
18 hours behind dom and Lizzie.
And the others
will be closer to us.
There's nothing
we can do about it.
So it'll make it a
much tighter race.
Already en route
to Colombia, dom and Lizzie.
It's weird, because
you wouldn't believe
we're bypassing one of
the most dangerous parts
of the world, the Darien gap.
Because on the other
side, it's just loads and loads
of tiny little paradise
islands with palm trees,
white beaches, and blue water.
And it is nice just to go
in-between the two of them.
The total journey
time from tupile to capurgana,
the first town across
the Colombian border,
is eight hours.
I think we must be here.
It's pitch black.
That's all I really know.
I have literally no idea.
For all we know, we
could be in Jamaica, so.
Ooh!
There's some awesome lightning.
Are we here at capurgana?
Because it's late,
we've had to stop early.
After three
and a half hours,
the siblings have reached
playon chico, 122 kilometers short
of their destination.
I don't think this is
attached to the mainland.
Nope.
We're literally
on a little island
in the middle of nowhere.
I don't even know if
we're still in Panama, or...
Colombia.
We're in
no-man's-land, literally.
What are we going to do?
Just 383
meters wide, playon
chico is one of 378
San blas islands,
home to the indigenous gunas.
Until the 1990s, the main form
of currency here was coconuts.
I didn't... I didn't know we'd
be able to speak English here.
Oh.
Hola.
Hola.
Um, do you speak
any English at all?
No.
We're looking for
somewhere to sleep.
Do you know anywhere
where we could stay?
- Si.
- Yeah?
Ok?
Mm-hmm.
Oh, wow.
Oh, this is so cool.
Now, this is beyond what I
expected about 10 minutes ago.
Amazing.
Pay tomorrow?
Si?
Ok.
How did we get so lucky?
The only thing is, he
hasn't told us how much it is.
I think we haven't
got much option here
on this little
island, so I think...
We have to... we pay
what we're asked to pay.
Whatever the price is,
because he's done us a favor.
Yeah.
Um, we need to pay you?
Si.
Um, how much is it
for
Yeah, good.
50, is that right?
Si.
Lorenzo.
We've spent far too
much over the past two days.
Yeah.
Do you see that?
Those are dolphins.
And I'm not even joking.
Literally right there.
Oh, there!
Oh my god.
I don't want to go.
I know.
It's such a shame that we're
not staying here for longer,
to take things slow.
Third leg, here we come.
20 hours behind
the current leaders, uncle
and nephew emon and jamiul.
I think from the
start of the race to...
To now, I think our
relationship has become closer.
But we are still learning
about each other.
We have been getting
frustrated with each other
in there, I'm sure we have.
But you're wise,
you took a hard hit.
The pair have
spent the most money, by far...
Over a third of
their total budget,
with six legs still remaining.
I think that we just
need to plan better.
We're going to
have to work more,
because so far, I don't think
he's put in too much hard work.
The...
You need to have
a captain of the ship,
do you know what I mean?
Yes.
Colombia.
Too late for
yesterday's ferries...
South America, here we come.
Jo and Sam make
the 116-kilometer journey to tupile
for the first boat of the day.
We are literally in
the middle of nowhere.
I really didn't expect
there to be a border stop.
Yeah.
Well, I think they're telling
them to put the camera down.
Yeah, it's all looking
quite... they're all army...
Guns, and everything else.
Feels very much like we're
going to the Darien gap, doesn't it?
Put the camera down.
Guys, look again.
What?
He's coming over with
it... coming over with a gun.
I've never experienced
this sort of traveling before.
Nothing's ever scared me.
Polar bears scare
me, but nothing else.
What were they checking for?
I don't know. I suspect...
Must have been drugs.
There's cartels and things
going through the Darien gap,
it would be drugs and
guns they'll be looking for.
I don't think they're
looking for Internet.
Oh, this is just beautiful.
I know.
Sam desperately
wants to see the world.
But I'm not sure he could
quite do it on his own yet.
Adios, Panama.
Yeah, peace out.
Bring on Colombia.
It would be nice for him to
find his feet traveling with me.
The best water transport ever!
From my perspective,
I think only travel
gives you that real excitement.
And I think this probably
is the last opportunity to do
a proper backpacking thing.
But you never know.
I think we must
be in Colombia, though.
Should bloody well
hope so, after a...
That took while
longer than I expected.
Seven-hour boat ride.
The gateway to
South America, capurgana
is a remote village
known for its quiet bays,
backed by dense
rainforest, making it only
accessible by air or water.
What number
country is this?
Guatemala, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama...
Seventh country.
Ola.
Hello.
We're trying to go to medellin.
Today? Today.
Today?
Yes.
Today is not possible
that you'd reach medellin
because our boats are leaving
before 10 o'clock the morning,
all of them.
Oh, there's no
roads here, is there?
There's no road.
So you can't get anywhere today?
No.
At all?
Well, yeah.
We've lost our lead essentially.
If everyone gets the 9am
boat and it arrives today,
everyone will be then leaving
at the same boat as us tomorrow.
Yeah.
I'm quite frustrated by the fact
that we can't leave here today.
But, where does
frustration get us?
No, I know.
Closing
in just 40 kilometers
from capurgana Jo and Sam.
This is very nice.
3 hours behind on the
midday boat, emon and jamiul.
I enjoy going on boats.
Got everything?
I think so.
And about to
get the last one of the day
from tupile, married
couple Jen, and Rob.
Hello.
Ola.
Capurgana
si.
So you want to sleep
on there in one night?
In one night.
Next day, go to the
capurgana it's a long way.
It's a long way?
I just didn't realize that it
would take us overnight.
Just a shame we
can't get further away.
Last isn't a good place to be.
No.
But, the positive side, we
have gained on the leaders.
That's not too bad.
It's terrible.
Wow this is rickety.
We might just have to smash
a bit more cash this next round.
But if it keeps
us in the game...
Then,
then that's...
It's all good.
It's all good, yeah.
Beneath all the trauma,
it's actually really fun.
Oh my god, the
boat flooded robby.
Here we are.
5pm.
Without the need
for an overnight stop,
Jo and Sam have
reached capurgana
where the race leaders have
been stuck since this morning.
So what's up.
Oh.
Oh my god.
Guys.
Oh.
I'm so pleased.
- It's a nice place.
- Yeah, its really beautiful.
We've been here since that time.
Oh god.
What you got there, man?
A map.
80 kilometers
away, arriving
on the island of ustupo for
the night, emon and jamiul.
We're about to come stay here.
It's got too dark.
And what we're
going to do is go up
in the morning, first flight,
and get into Colombia.
Thank you very much.
These areas are
infested with mosquitoes.
So the first time we're
putting up our mosquito nets
or trying to anyway.
Jen and Rob will
bear it down on playon
chico, where dom and Lizzie
stopped the night before.
I hope there's some
hotels on the island.
Where might we
stay for the evening?
Hostel.
Ok.
Yeah, ok. Rob: Your hostel?
- Yeah.
- Si.
Ok.
Cuanto es?
25, 25.
25, 25?
So, 50.
Yeah.
What, dollar?
Yeah.
No.
Is it just one hostel?
Yeah.
Just one?
50 us dollars for one night
in a hostel on this island?
We've been paying like six.
Can we work
here to make it cheaper?
We only have one option and
therefore we have to take it.
Uh, can we sleep in these?
Cheaper?
We don't need a room, we
just need a roof over our heads.
Don't we?
Oh, robby.
- One, one.
- One, one.
15.
So 30 together.
- To sleep on the hammocks.
- Yeah.
- Ok.
- Muchas gracias.
Muchas gracias.
Are you happy
about that? Are you...
No, I'm really
not happy about it,
but I know we've got no choice.
Well, can I get my bag off then?
Well, no I better keep
it on because there's
nowhere to put it.
This trip's going to
be really tough, actually.
Yeah.
I
just get miserable.
I mean, I'm not very
good when I'm hungry.
I'm not very good
when I'm tired.
I'm not very good when
I don't know where I am.
You don't see that
every day, do you?
We've always
been cautious when we're
somewhere that we don't know.
I just always think everybody's
trying to Rob me all the time.
Hiya.
Yeah.
A high five.
Oh I got a hit
with the locals, uh.
People generally tend to kind
of get lax on holiday and a bit,
you know, oh I'm
in the holiday spirit,
I've had a few tequilas.
Whereas, I would always pay
more attention to my bag and money.
Oh, god.
Robby, I'm so scared.
Why are you being so nice?
People aren't nice
like this in england.
It's quite awful,
actually I don't give anybody
the benefit of the doubt
which is actually really sad.
That's a shame but, yeah.
Nice to meet you.
You ok?
Beautiful name.
This trip is going to
challenge all of those things.
It is.
But you know what,
that's a good thing.
I think so yeah.
Because I
will learn to be a better person,
a different person.
Whenever in england that
would a kid come up to you
and cuddle you, only when
it was rubbing your pockets.
Putting the race
to one side for the evening,
the leading teams
hang out in capurgana.
We've been trying to
sort of relax a bit more.
We were just
intensely traveling.
And if you go all out for
this whole race, you enjoy it.
Yeah.
Ok.
Jesus, what's this?
8pm, an alert
via the team's GPS trackers.
Oh.
Good god.
What, there's a message?
Something bad's going to happen.
A state of emergency
has been declared
in Ecuador and travel to
that country is now forbidden.
Gosh.
A state of emergency
could be anything.
A war, a terrorist, a
natural disaster, flood.
With no phones
or access to the Internet,
the teams are unaware
of dramatic scenes
unfolding at their
next checkpoint
in the center of Quito.
Demonstrations have
broken out all over the city,
protesting
government cuts to fuel
subsidies and workers' rights.
With unrest spreading, an
official state of emergency
has been declared
throughout the country,
shutting Ecuador's borders and
making travel to the checkpoint
of Quito impossible.
So you can't go
to Ecuador at all?
It's quite concerning now.
As a consequence,
the third checkpoint is
now villavieja, tatacoa desert.
Where on earth is that?
Right.
Oh my god.
What a turn off for the books.
You think we should
get the map, huh?
Yeah.
The
third checkpoint will
now be in Colombia, at the
heart of the tatacoa desert.
Well that's thrown
some funds up in the air.
We might have to completely
change our direction.
To reach it, the
teams have several options.
Travel via the vibrant
cities of medellin
and the nation's capital,
Bogota, the main bus
transport hub in the country.
Or, take in the
spectacular countryside
the southwest has
to offer by going
via Cali, famous for
its laid back dance
culture and mountain views.
Well, to tatacoa desert.
Yeah.
Wherever it is.
We need to hope that
all the other teams have
gone in the wrong direction.
With routes to plan
and strategies to consider...
Do you know where
villavieja tatacoa is?
Tatacoa.
So this checkpoint
is in Colombia.
The teams retire
for the night in preparation
for the race ahead.
Ooh.
Night, love.
10am, and ready
to depart capurgana in pole
position, dom and
Lizzie and Jo and Sam.
Is that dom and Lizzie?
That's dom and
Lizzie over there.
But even earlier
starts from the others
mean surprise arrivals.
Oh my god.
Oh.
Rob and Jen.
Let's get our bags on.
No time to wait.
A bit awkward, isn't it?
Everyone seems smarter.
Same time.
The same time.
Oh.
So close, yet so far guys.
- We're leaving.
- You're leaving?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Are the both of you are leaving?
So have you heard about
the checkpoint change?
Yeah, yeah. Checkpoint change.
Really sad about Ecuador.
Excuse me, Please.
Ok.
Jen.
What?
Why are they all here?
What the hell?
Oh my god.
All four teams.
Are you going now?
Yeah, oh my god.
Oh hello, darling.
Good to see you.
Oh bless you.
You getting on
this boat, our boat?
No, I don't think so.
But it looks like we need to.
Yeah, this is the
last boat of the day.
Shit.
Two minute boat.
Elizabeth,
Por favor.
Enjoy yourself, guys.
See you later.
Samuel, Joanna.
Robby, we need
to get on that boat.
It leaves right now.
It leaves right now.
It's once a day.
So if we don't get on this,
we're stuck here till tomorrow.
Well, let's get our
passport stamped quick.
I'll do your passport.
You go and find out how
much tickets are and try and get
us on that boat to necoclí.
Rob is running down the road.
They're trying to
get us to the platform.
The boat's gone.
There's no more.
Oh my days, oh
my days, oh my days.
Billeto necoclí dos.
Dos.
Passport.
Passports I
need a passport.
Oh god, the boat is going.
I can't buy it until
I show her my passport.
Oh no. Where is it?
Where is it? Mine's stamped.
You ok? Jen: Yeah.
Oh.
There we go.
Sorry.
Two tickets to necoclí the
ferry that's going now, please.
Muchas gracias.
Muchas gracias.
I don't think Jen and
Rob are going to make it.
We've created this lead
since the start of the race
so I want to keep it.
Get out of my way.
Get out of my way.
There they are again.
Is that them?
Oh.
We're here.
Jo and Sam.
Oh, we're going.
Ok.
Adios.
Oh my days, oh
my days, oh my days.
Please wait for
me two minutes please.
You're going in the next boat.
Second boat please.
Ok.
What time does that leave?
Maybe 10 minutes.
Oh, great. Great.
Right. Muchas gracias.
The crazy thing is that
they think we've missed it
and we're here for 24 hours.
Yes!
- Woo!
So actually...
Back in the game.
We are so back in the game.
Oh, and the boys,
the boys are here.
We should probably
hide from them.
They're not going
ahead of us now.
We're in last place.
We have to stay here tonight.
Under the impression
the last boat of the day
has already left,
emon and jamiul
are left behind in capurganá.
In the morning we'll head back
out and get back on the race.
We left the boys behind.
Oh, man.
They are going to be so upset.
This is a dive shop here, is it?
Yeah,.
We can go ask for a job, then.
Might as well.
I feel really sneaky.
But then I feel really, like,
happy that I've been sneaky.
Stuck in
capurganá for 24 hours,
the boys take the
opportunity to earn some cash
at a local scuba diving school.
All this gear is kind of heavy,
so we're helping put all
the gear on our customers.
Is that ok with you?
- That's fine.
- Sounds good to me.
- Ok, let's go.
Are you actually
going to work this time,
or just make me do the work?
We'll be out in the sea, si...
It'll be nice.
I like the sea,
so I'll give it a go.
The way I've been
brought up, I've
always been told to try to
achieve the best I can achieve.
I remember in school, if I
didn't do good in my grades,
my father would just
go straight to the school
and tell my teachers to put
me right at the front of the class
to make sure I listened.
So we're going to need
help to put the gear together.
These things kind
of build up a way of life.
And that's why winning
is the best option.
If you win, you've
achieved the best.
How was that, guys?
Pretty good.
Awesome.
The last
couple of jobs obviously
I've taken a backseat and
sort of overlooked everything.
And this job is
completely different.
It was equally shared
between me and jamiul.
And we had to work hard.
We did everything
together, so I enjoyed it.
It shows that he
can put in the effort,
and he can do the work.
It's been good.
With work
done for the day...
We just asked him.
But stranded
until morning, the boys look
into their own.
How long is it from the
necoclí to villavieja tatacoa?
Cuanto hora?
Days?
Here's to neiva.
- Oh, so it's in neiva.
- It's in neiva?
It's in neiva?
Ok.
Right, we've got
our route planned.
They found
out that the fastest route
to the checkpoint is to
head via Medellín to neiva,
the nearest major
transport hub to villavieja.
Ok.
We're 24 hours behind now.
Everybody else is ahead of us.
But we're hoping to
kind of creep up on them
and take them by surprise.
I reckon we should
head to the bus station.
Head towards the bus station
to try and find somewhere to...
Why do you want to
sit by the bus station
when you can sit on the beach?
Now on the
Colombian mainland, Joe
and Sam, and dom and Lizzie.
With Jen
and Rob close behind.
All right, let's move then.
Robbie, Robbie,
Robbie, Robbie, Robbie...
What's this?
What, what?
Go that way.
The leading
teams are taking the first
bus south to Medellín.
Everyone is going now.
I think it's going to be better
to stay here and
get on a night bus,
and then we save
on accommodation.
What's your
preferred idea, then.
Get on this bus.
I think we get the 8 o'clock.
Well, we've got to.
The bus is going.
It's been quite nice
with Jo and Sam.
I've really enjoyed it, yeah.
Yeah.
But we need to crack
- Separate.
Separate.
We need to
go our separate ways.
We should really plan
where we're going to head
on to next after Medellín.
I think the more
obvious route would be
going straight down via Bogota.
Yeah.
Ok.
But we want to work.
There's a job
available in guatapé,
where you can help with the
horse-riding trips and I think
that's something i'd
really love to do because I
used to work at stables.
Which is two hours
outside of Medellín.
Lizzie's plan to
top up their budget means
a detour to the town of guatapé,
82 kilometers east of Medellín.
I'm a little bit
scared of horses.
I quite fancied
going to Cali
because Cali is the
salsa capital of Colombia.
It's a nine-hour bus today to
Medellín, and then from there,
we go to Cali.
Good?
We have a plan.
Jo is aiming
to travel straight to Cali,
420 kilometers beyond
Medellín, all on buses.
Most of the time
I'm enjoying the race.
But then quite a lot
of the time, I'm not.
It's just like you go
through highs and lows.
And I think with eight
weeks I will struggle.
Going from Panama
to Colombia on a boat,
going from the islands
and the beautiful water
was absolutely amazing.
But then stuff like doing the
nine-hour, 10-hour bus ride,
I get so bored because
there's nothing to do.
And I can't deal with that.
So it's not pleasant.
Do you think it's got
anything to do with your adhd?
It probably does.
I don't know.
I've never been able to
explain why I'm anything.
When I adopted Sam
when he was six months old,
he was very hyper.
And he was quite
disruptive at nursery.
And in fact, the
nursery owner said,
did his birth mother drink?
And I said, well, yeah, she did.
Why?
And she said, oh, I've just
seen children a bit like Sam.
We went off and did
a little bit of research
and found this condition
called fetal alcohol disease,
or fetal alcohol effects.
And it was just like
reading a story about Sam.
Because you get
frustrated, don't you?
Well, I get frustrated
that I can't explain it.
Basically, how it
affects the brain
is the wiring is just off.
If you said, you know,
don't touch that, it's hot,
he would touch it.
I'm sorry that you're
struggling with this bit.
So we'll try and get
things right and try
to prioritize what's important.
We're going to Medellín.
And is there anything
that you'd like to do there?
Well, that is where
Pablo Escobar is, isn't it?
Well, was, yeah.
I'd really love
to go to a tour of...
Ok.
Well, let's do it.
Can we do that, shake on it?
Shake on it?
Jo and Sam's new
plan, to postpone the 12-hour bus
journey to Cali and
instead take a break
from the race in Medellín.
When I was younger, I couldn't
deal with pressure or stress.
So that's when i'd
spiral off and kick off.
No one ever really knew I
had fetal alcohol syndrome,
but they knew I had adhd.
And it was a hard
thing to deal with.
On this journey, I will
just have to figure out
different ways of dealing with
the stress and the pressure
that comes in front of me.
Right.
Well, guys, this is farewell.
We'll see you in a
few days probably.
- Yeah.
- Bye, guys.
Bye.
As the teams
separate to find accommodation,
10 hours behind and just
leaving necoclí, Jen and Rob
settle in for the night.
If he said to me, do you want
to sleep in a bed right now
or do you want to sleep on a
bus, naturally I'd take a bed.
But we just have
to deal with it.
It's not ideal, is it, but if we
want to stay in the game...
Still be in the game, we
don't really have a choice.
This is our best
option, I think.
Yeah.
And we are much happier for it.
We're enjoying it a lot more.
Well, I'm absolutely
exhausted and can't do anything.
And he's taken his socks
off, and his feet stink.
Give it five minutes.
It'll calm down.
6:00, Medellín.
Morning.
Buenas dias.
Jen and Rob are
planning for another night bus.
Oh, where's he gone?
What the hell?
Oh, he's here.
Need
do it from Cali.
Oh, oh!
My bag is so heavy.
No, I'm fine.
Just leave me here.
Go without me!
Nestled in a
valley between the andes,
the city of Medellín, the
second largest in Colombia.
Once known as the murder
capital of the world due to warring
drug cartels in the
1980s, in recent years,
Medellín is a city reborn,
flourishing with new business,
arts, and culture.
So welcome to
Pablo Escobar district.
I will explain the mural,
the graffiti, the pictures, and
also a little bit of history.
Please, after you.
We just met the guys
on the Pablo Escobar tour.
It's a lot of money,
particularly on a budget,
but I think Sam
wants to do this.
And he's fascinated by it.
And I think, just
blow a bit of money,
and hopefully he
gets a lot out of it.
At the height
of his grip over Medellín
in the 1980s, Pablo
Escobar was one of the most
powerful criminals
in history, supplying
80% of the world's cocaine.
This is the mural of the
members of the Medellín cartel.
Over the
past couple of weeks
there's been a few
things that I've missed out
I've really wanted to see.
And finally I'm going to
see something I want to see.
So it's quite a nice
feeling that mom's
listening to me, actually.
So this was the rooftop
Pablo Escobar got killed.
Pablo tried to escape
from the back of his house,
get onto the neighbor's
rooftop, and then he got killed.
It's very chilling
to know that that's
where he got killed.
But at the same
time, it's really cool.
80 kilometers
east of Medellín...
All right, dom.
We need to find
out where this job is.
Dom and Lizzie
have arrived at guatapé.
Wow.
Oh, my god.
This is so amazing.
I wish parts of Yorkshire
were this colorful.
Often refer to
as the most colorful town
in the world, it's looked
over by the pedra del peñon,
a 200-meter granite
rock with a brick staircase
of 659 steps built into it.
In its shadow, dom and
Lizzie's job for the day.
So...
Sweeping.
Uh-huh.
Just here, or...
What's that?
I'm not sure.
So basically,
it's picking up poo.
They said it'd be fun
working with horses.
Hopefully they haven't
eaten too much today.
Ugh.
I've got horse poo on my fingers
should we just sack this off?
Do you just want me to do, dom?
Because if you've got a
problem with the job, I'll do it.
I'm willing to work hard.
Ok.
Bye.
It's Lizzie's job
choice, so I'm going
to let her clean the poo up.
What, do you want money?
Stop complaining.
I feel like coming to
guatapé, we've gone a bit
out of our way to do this.
And I know we need
to earn this money back.
But we have lost our lead now.
So I'm not really
chuffed, to be honest.
Hey!
One perk of the job...
Dom, do you want to get on?
Do you think
that's a good idea?
They're
not going to run off.
Ok.
Getting
to ride like a llanero.
Go on, dom.
A Colombian cowboy.
And then you put
your feet in the stirrups.
Are you pooing yourself a bit?
That's an understatement.
There you go.
And if you feel like you're
going too fast, just shout.
I'll stop.
- Go.
Come on.
Oh, ok.
Ok.
Oh!
So I finally
found something
that I can do better
than him, and it's
quite satisfying for me.
No, no, no.
This is too fast.
I'm going to fall off.
Ah, gracias.
50 for me.
20 for me.
I put the work in, so...
Muchos gracias.
Welcome to Bogota.
Dominating a high
plateau 2,640 meters above sea
level with modern
skyscrapers standing
next to colonial churches,
Colombia's capital,
Bogota, the lady of the andes.
Founded by the
indigenous muisca people
long before the arrival
of the conquistadors,
it is now the second most
congested city in the world.
Robbie, stop walking
away from me.
What are you doing, chick?
I just want to know
what you're doing.
We're looking for a hostel.
Well,.
Jen and Rob arrived
in the city at 6:00 am
after two long nights
spent on buses.
Hello, Buenas dias.
60,000 pesos.
Let's keep looking.
Let's keep looking for prices.
What's the matter?
We could be walking
around till 2:00 pm, couldn't we?
Let's give it till 2:00, then.
- Give it till 2:00?
- Yeah.
Well, you said 2:00.
That was a joke,
because then we could be
walking around until 2:00 pm.
All right.
Let's do that, then.
No, no, no.
No, this is ludicrous.
Almost everything is
exagerated with Jen,
I think, which is... which
is part of her charm.
I mean, i'm
absolutely exhausted.
I've not slept for three days.
I've not showered
for three days.
But at the same time,
something four days.
I would like to brush my teeth.
I would like a glass of water.
It's often explaining
that things aren't
quite as bad as they are.
The room is all yours.
- No way.
- Oh, wow.
Yes.
Oh, amazing.
It's the first bed
in three days.
I think that's how our
relationship works, really.
A dime to winning.
A wish doesn't come
true if you make it public.
Ok.
I'll make it secret, then.
Goodnight tonight's meal.
I'm eating. You're not.
For a dime?
Crikey.
They still stink.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
Having left capurganá
24 hours after the other teams,
emon and jamiul have
made it to Medellín
on an important day in
the city's football calendar.
The fans are amazing.
You can really tell the
passion for football here.
Everyone is singing
and dancing outside.
Football is probably bigger
here than it is in the UK.
Local team
atlético nacional are playing
their league rivals, junior.
The football
is my passion.
It's not jamiul's.
I've seen him play football.
He's got two left feet.
He's really crap at football.
I like the
hustle and bustle.
I like the fans going
crazy and chanting.
I'd say I'm more
of an atmosphere
fan than a football fan.
Cuanto es?
So 55,000 each.
That's our daily budget, man.
I would like to experience it.
But if it's the race or the
experience, at this stage,
I would choose the race.
You want to choose
the race over the experience?
Yes.
My uncle's put me and the
race ahead of his passion
and his wants.
And I'm quite moved by that.
So, what, should we go to
the bus station and get tickets?
While three teams
are taking well-established routes
towards the checkpoint,
the boys are looking
for a more direct
bus to neiva, the town
they heard about in capurganá.
Right now we're assuming
that everybody else
is a good 24 hours ahead of us.
But I'm hoping that we
can catch up to them.
No.
Neiva.
No.
No neiva?
However finding
this less-traveled route
is proving difficult.
I think these guys ..
Hola.
We want to go to neiva.
Neiva?
Neiva.
12.
Oh, way down there.
This'll do my head in.
Hola.
You go to neiva?
Neiva.
Quando hours neiva?
12.
So we get to neiva 8:00 am, si?
Yeah.
This is exciting.
We've just spent how much?
152,000?
150,000.
They've managed to
find an overnight bus to neiva,
a move that could help
them get back in the race.
It should be 170.
This is.
How did we get so lucky?
Apparently Cali
has the prettiest girls,
so I'm sure you'll
have plenty to look at.
She is so embarrassing.
Jo and Sam
have reached Cali.
The second largest
city in Colombia
is known as the salsa
capital of the world,
thanks to its dance culture.
Sam would just like spend money
and not actually
go in it, whereas we
do need to earn some money.
And I thought working
at the salsa bar
would be really good fun.
Having overspent
and Sam's Escobar tour,
Jo's hoping to earn
some money back
doing something she enjoys.
La matracka, a club the
historic cabrero district,
is famous for its salsa
and tango parties.
Jo and Sam's task...
Keep the tables clean and
clear the empty glasses.
It is so hard to...
I don't understand any of this.
What happened?
Sam?
Yeah, one minute.
One minute.
But Sam is struggling
with the language barrier.
I don't understand
what they're saying.
The whole place is clean.
What to do is go around
all the empty tables
and wipe the chairs.
We've done that.
Well, have you done
all these end tables.
No, you've done
those end tables.
No, I've done the ones
with glasses on them.
So you do the empty
ones and the chairs.
We're actually cleaning
stuff that's already clean.
When I can't
understand anyone,
I just feel like an idiot.
I'm out of my comfort
zone, basically.
I just hate big
crowds of people.
I feel like everyone's
watching, and I don't like it.
I can't deal with this.
It's a discomfort
I can't explain.
It's just a really
horrible feeling
that you've continuously
got, like you're on your tiptoes,
trying to figure out what to do.
I don't know what it is.
It's just me.
Sam.
What am I doing?
I am wasting my time.
I want to go now.
Darling, she's
just given us a job.
She's...
I don't care if she's
given us a job.
I know it's not a difficult job.
I'm wasting my time.
On the surface
it looks like he's
being a petulant 19-year-old,
but I don't think he is.
I just don't think he can cope.
As you know, me, I
am one big problem.
You're not one big problem.
You're complicated.
He's never been
great with big crowds.
And he feels stupid if
he can't communicate.
And I think this is probably
what some of those issues are.
I'm out of the race.
I quit.
I'm done.
Enough.
Done.
You're being ridiculous.
This might be
the end of it for us.
Grandma gave
me this to give to you.
Oh.
Do you miss her?
Oh.
Thinking of you all the time.
Hope it's going well.
Big hug to you and Sam.
That's lovely.
Well done for keeping a secret.
I just wasn't in a
good place last night.
And when I'm not
in a good place,
my easiest option
to go to is quitting.
Just had to clear my head a bit.
Happy birthday.
I don't ever like having
conflicts with my mom,
but we always get through it.
So I'm glad she's happy.
And if she's happy, I'm happy.
Did you bring me one?
Sorry, no.
You get me a drink tonight?
Yeah, it's on me.
It's on me.
On the move
again, Jo and Sam
are off to neiva,
the closest transport
hub to the checkpoint.
So yeah, back to racing.
Final, final day of this leg.
300 kilometers
lies ahead of them, much of it
along winding mountain roads.
The bus is about 30
centimeters from the edge.
Jesus Christ.
It'll take us two
days to get there.
Just approaching neiva
after our 12-hour shift.
Take the last little
sprint to the finish line
and we'll be there.
Jobs a good'UN.
After
traveling overnight
on a more direct
route, emon and jamiul
are first to arrive in neiva.
They must now
head north to reach
the third checkpoint near
the village of villavieja,
37 kilometers away.
Go on. Let's go,
let's go, let's go.
I'm hoping that
we've pulled up, man.
All depends on how
the other teams get on.
Departing
Bogota, Jen and Rob.
Also heading to neiva,
but with a plan to get ahead.
Can we get out at villavieja?
- Si.
- Si.
Yeah?
Will you shout, it's villavieja?
And then we get out?
Securing
an early drop off
could avoid a
76-kilometer detour.
This guy is
like a "Mario kart" racer.
That's good, because it
means we'll get there quick.
Yet to leave Bogota...
Dom and Lizzie.
Neiva?
Neiva.
Neiva?
It's neiva?
Neiva.
Neiva?
Oh, si.
Ok,.
Getting through
the capital's notorious traffic
at rush hour means
a slow getaway.
The traffic is awful.
No mas. No mas.
We could be arriving
ahead, just north of neiva.
So now we've got to
cross the river, though.
I don't understand how
we're going to do that.
There must be roads.
This is it?
Oh, god.
It doesn't look very "it."
Villavieja?
Si.
That way.
Gracias.
What, down there?
Yeah.
Jen and Rob
are now just two kilometers
from villavieja, but they
face a further hurdle...
The magdalena river.
This was a massive risk.
I hope it pays off.
Yeah.
We haven't saved cash, but
hopefully we've saved time.
Oh, I've seen a boat.
Do you?
A boat just crossing
the river now.
Get me on a boat man.
Holla!
We're gonna need a boat now.
Across the river...
Seems like we've
come into a little time.
- Right.
- Oh, hello.
Here we are.
Should I pull the garmin out?
Emon and
jamiul are closing in
on the third checkpoint and
are notified of its exact location
by the GPS tracker.
Proceed to bethel hotel.
16 kilometers
outside of villavieja
lies a path to the
checkpoint hotel,
at the heart of
the tatacoa desert,
named after its venomous
inhabitants, rattlesnakes.
This vast, arid area has
a Mars-like landscape,
and its position
near the equator
gives it a unique view of both
northern and southern skies,
attracting astronomers
from all over the world.
Hello, villavieja.
We're so close,
Robbie, I can smell it.
All right.
Robbie.
Be the turtle.
Be the turtle?
Don't be the hare.
Be the turtle.
Oh.
Come on.
Oh, it's warm, man.
Hola, amigos!
- Hola.
- Bethel hotel?
- Bethel hotel?
- A hotel?
Si?
You can take us now?
Go, go, go!
I'm ready to
brush my teeth, man.
I can smell the wine.
Gotta be here.
Gotta be close, man.
One moment we're crossing
a river, the next moment
we're in a desert.
Makes no sense.
I spy with my little eye
something beginning with a w.
Window.
No.
Wall.
Nope.
Oh, my god.
We're here.
I
don't see no hotel.
I can't see anything for miles.
Those buildings
in white over there.
I can't walk there.
I feel like the rubber on my
trainers are going to melt.
We are trekking through
the middle of the desert.
Ridiculous.
I thought I can see a sign.
We can see it.
Or is it a mirage?
That's got to be the hotel.
Third checkpoint, here we come.
Check in! Wait!
Check in!
Hola.
Bienvenidos a Colombia.
I see the book.
Ok.
Prepare yourself to be last.
Oh, god.
Do you want to do
the honors this time?
Do it, man. Do it.
Oh, my god!
No way.
What?
They came in first?
Ha!
Oh, my gosh.
I don't care.
Amazing.
Oh, my gosh.
I do not believe that.
Gracias.
I'll close that for you.
Thank you.
To come first, amazing.
It's an awesome feeling.
Previous legs
we were being a bit fancy.
That's why we made mistakes.
And on this leg, we've
learned from our mistakes.
We've been fortunate
with the people that we've met.
The locals have
helped us quite a bit.
Races like this can be
done on fine margins.
There is no room for error.
Ah!
12:20, two hours.
Yeah.
Yeah!
I actually cannot
believe that we
have gone from last to second.
Oh, wow.
Definitely back in the game.
Yeah.
I'm dead proud of us.
Just little Jen and
Rob from reading.
Boom, second.
Oh, if a bug or something
jumps out at me, I'm gonna...
You'll be fine.
Seven hours later.
I really can't see anything.
Hola.
Buenos noches.
Third.
Jamiul and emon came first.
Oh, that's brilliant.
With three teams
having made it to the tatacoa
desert, emon and jamiul
are now in first place,
after starting the leg 20
hours behind the leaders.
We sort of expected
to come third or fourth,
because we took a
slightly circuitous route.
I mean, the roads were just...
Horrible.
Rubbish.
Where's Liz and dom, then?
I know.
That's amazing.
I feel like maybe
if we do come last,
it'll be a good kick up
the ass for the next leg.
Might make me race a bit harder.
I hope so.
Anyway, we're not going
to have that discussion now.
Let's just go.
Ok.
Don't start, Lizzie.
- No, no.
That's why I said let's stop.
Next time...
Bring it on.
The teams plunge
into deepest, darkest Peru.
It's exhausting.
Oh, look at you!
And
the sky's the limit.
I can do this.
I can do a hell of a lot more.
