Pokémon (1997–…): Season 21, Episode 22 - Smashing wth Sketch! - full transcript

The friends learn about Pokémon Ping Pong.

-[Kukui] Alola!
-[all] Alola!

Class, today is all about
Pokémon Ping-Pong.

Now, presenting our special teacher.

Ilima at your service. It's nice to spend
more time with you.

All right! This is going to be great.

But why is Ilima teaching us?

You don't know? It's because Ilima has won
countless Pokémon Ping-Pong tournaments.

Ilima's good, really good.

I think we should begin
by going over the rules.

Pokémon Ping-Pong is a game where Trainers
and their Pokémon compete in pairs.

Let's start with the serve.

First, you bounce the ball
in your own court,

then it enters your opponents' court.

It must also bounce
in your opponents' court,

or it is considered out of bounds.

From there, the opponent
attempts to return the serve.

Again, if the ball does not bounce in
the server's court, it's out of bounds.

Now the server's partner
attempts a return.

The Pokémon and Trainer
take turns returning the ball.

You know, it sounds kind of familiar,
but I'm not sure I get it.

I think seeing it in action will help.

Why don't we demonstrate this
with an actual game?

-Lana, would you like to be my opponent?
-Sure.

-You can do it, Lana!
-Mm.

Now, let's get this started!

Smeargle!

Wow, Ilima's partner's a Smeargle!

Smeargle. The Painter Pokémon.
A Normal type.

Smeargle uses the liquid
that comes out of its tail

to make unique marks
that establish its territory.

Why don't I serve first?

-Smear!
-Pop.

It's well within the rules for
your Pokémon to use a paddle, its body,

-or even a move to return the ball.
-That's awesome!

Lana and Popplio are really good at this.

My data on Pokémon Ping-Pong
is fully uploaded.

The first to score 11 wins the game.
A match is made up of three games

and the first to win two games
takes the match.

How would you all like to give it a try?

-I can't wait!

[narrator] It's Pokémon Ping-Pong,

where Trainer and Pokémon
play together as a team

and the Pokémon already seem
fairly comfortable with it!

Rallying back and forth is boring.

-I think it's time for us to have a game.
-You've got it!

Pikachu, let's smash it!

-Pikachu! Pika!
-[groans]

Ash, are you all right?

Uh, I'm fine.
It looks worse than it feels.

Oh. We'll win the next one, so just serve!

Uh, sure.

-Here it comes!
-Maro! Maro!

-We've got it!
-Pika!

-[groans]
-Pika.

Pikachu.

-Toge! Toge!
-Oh!

[both groan]

-Come on, Togedemaru.
-Toge!

-I said I had the ball.
-Maru!

[both grumble]

-You all right?
-Oh, dear. This will never do.

Now, what is the most important
component of Pokémon Ping-Pong?

Um, um, um, um, um... right!

A power smash.

I'd say it's the serve.

Neither one. It's consideration.

Consideration?

Pokémon Ping-Pong is a discipline

in which a Pokémon and its Trainer work
as partners.

If one partner lacks consideration
for the other,

the distance between them grows
and they lose coordination.

-That makes sense.
-Pika.

-Sorry about that.
-Togedemaru.

Ilima, what's the best way for Trainers
to work together with their partners?

It's best to find ways for Trainer
and Pokémon to display strengths.

You could clearly decide who plays offense
and who plays defense, for example.

-Offense?
-And defense?

You see, defense is receiving a serve

and offense is making
a smash for the point.

You decide who is best suited for which.

-Pi! Pika!
-Pikachu's totally awesome on offense.

Marowak, too,
hitting stuff is his specialty.

-Marowak!
-I have one more question, please.

What can we do to get better
at playing Pokémon Ping-Pong?

There's no trick to the answer.
Simple is best.

Take the ball that's hit to you,
then try to hit it back. It's easy.

-Take the ball, then hit it back.
-Oh, I like that. Easy.

I'm glad you approve.

It's time we start playing
some games for real.

Count me in!

Our first round will feature Ash
and Pikachu playing against...

[Rotom] Mallow and Steenee.

Okay, here it comes. [grunts]

-There.
-Pika!

Steenee!

-Impressive return.
-Eevee.

[grunts]

[grunts] Yeah!

-Pikachu, use Iron Tail for the smash!
-Pika! Chu! Pika!

-Amazing!
-Did they win it?

-Send it back with Magical Leaf!
-Steenee!

All right. What a cool smell that is.

-Whoa! It's a perfumed Magical Leaf.
-You're kidding.

Then we'll just send it on back
with an Electro Ball! Ah!

Pikachu.

-Steenee, use Double Slap for the smash!
-Steenee!

[both yelp]

They softened their opponents up
with perfume,

then smashed them with Double Slap.

We just witnessed the secret tactic
that's known as From Riches to Rags!

All right!

Next we have Lillie and Snowy versus...

[Rotom] Sophocles and Togedemaru.

-Here it comes. [grunts]
-[grunts]

-Vul!
-Toge!

-[Sophocles and Lillie grunt
-[Togedemaru and Snow grunt and trill]

This could be an extended rally.

Now, that's enough!

If I put my mind to it,
from a theoretical point of view,

this point will be mine, all mine!

Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! [screams]

[groans]

-Snowy, we did it!
-Vulpix!

Togedemar! Togede!

And, finally, we have Kiawe
and Marowak versus...

[Rotom] Lana and Popplio!

I'll be the first to serve! Ah!

[Ash] He's fired up, all right!

-Bring it!
-[Mallow] And Lana's all confident.

The zenith of my mind, body and spirit,

like the great mountain of Akala,
become a raging fire and burn!

[all gasp]

Inferno Overdrive Serve!

-That was actually a bluff.
-Huh?

-What was that?
-It's called a feint.

Now's our chance.
Let's end this with a Shadow Bone smash!

Maro, Maro, Maro, Marowak!

-Popplio.
-Pop! Pop!

-What a good shot.
-Great return!

Indeed and it's a drive shot as well.

-A drive shot?
-What?

A power hit with a top spin
and a strong spin on the ball

can completely change its direction.

[Kiawe grunts]

-Lana, you can do this!
-Go for it!

-Pika!
-[grunts]

What was that? A normal return?

It makes sense.
Lana is playing defense, after all.

-But Marowak's got a chance to smash it!
-Go right! Use Iron Head!

Marow...

-Popplio, use Aqua Jet!
-Pooooooooooop!

-Incredible.
-A drive shot. Stronger than before.

[grunts]

You've got it this time!

Carry this past the ocean's horizon.

-Here it comes. Marowak, get back!
-Maro.

All right, Hydro Vortex Attack!

See, I can bluff, too.

[frustrated grunting]

-Another feint!
-The same trick as Kiawe.

Nothing can help them out now.

[all] Huh?

That's the ultimate strategy,
Bone-Toss Return!

-Good going, Marowak.
-Maro!

Just what I was waiting for.

Go, Popplio!

[squeals]

[Kiawe and Marowak yell]

[both groan]

-Marowak! Marowak! Marowak!
-Total defeat.

-No.
-Huh?

It was out of bounds,
so one point for you.

-Huh?
-Marow?

[Pokémon cheer]

-[Ash] That was really fun!
-[Mallow] The best!

If it isn't inconvenient,
I was hoping you all would do me the honor

of coming to watch the Pokémon Ping-Pong
tournament this weekend.

-You'll be playing in it?
-With everything I've got.

-We'll all be there to cheer you on!
-[all] Can't wait!

I'm very humbled.

[crowd cheers]

[Ash] Awesome! Look at all the people.

[Kiawe] This is the tournament that
determines the best team in Alola.

That means Ilima and Smeargle must have
won the previous tournament, correct?

Not according to my data.
They were beaten in the final round.

Huh?
-See, there happens to be

an incredible team that wins
this tournament every single year.

Oh, so they're who Ilima got beaten by.

-What's the Trainer's name?
-It's Ikari.

Better known to us as Dragon Rage Ikari.

Cool! That means
he's a Dragon-type Pokémon specialist.

No. He just happens to remind people
of Dragon types.

-Huh?
-Hey, could that be him over there?

Hey! Did you forget I beat the living
daylights out of you last time? Huh?

My memory is just fine.

What's the idea of coming back to Alola
to get your clock cleaned again?

Believe it or not, I returned in order
to make another attempt to beat you.

Oh, please! I don't know
what training you did in Kalos, pal,

but you don't stand a snowball's chance
in Wela Volcano of beating me!

[all] Who's that Pokémon?

It's Eevee!

[Eevee] Eevee!

Round one matches start now.

Dragon Rage Ikari leads the pack
for this one.

I wonder what his game's
going to look like.

Here I come!

Mienshao!

[Ash] Who's that Pokémon?

Mienshao. The Martial Arts Pokémon.
A Fighting Type.

Mienshao uses the fur on its arms
like whips.

When it starts a series of attacks,
nothing can stop it.

-You're toast in no time! Got it?
-Shao!

Bring it on!

[snarls and grunts]

-Mienshao!
-[referee] One, zero!

Weak return!
Aim for the very corner of the table!

[whimpers]

-What's that guy's problem?
-Pika.

He's not showing the consideration
Ilima was talking about.

That's it. I know the reason
Ilima wanted to play in the tournament.

-Huh?
-Maybe Ilima feels ashamed

that a nasty opponent could've beaten him.

So it means he's here to win.

That just makes me
want to cheer for Ilima more.

Look. Here comes Ilima in the flesh.

[all] Go, go, Ilima, go!
Beat that guy and have a great show!

[all squeal]

Keep it down! It's disrespectful to
the art of Pokémon Ping-Pong

to stand on this ground
and utter such adolescent squeals.

Who in the world is the old woman?

[squeals]

[grunts]

Squawk until you're blue in the face!

Your immature musings
are quite the disgrace.

Gorgeous is best.
With me, that's the case.

Along with Wobburomi,
we'll be the winners of this race.

Wobbu...

-When you serve, aim for the ace!
-Yes, my coach!

-All right. Wobburomi, are you ready?
-Wo... Wobbuffet.

-Eevee!
-[chuckles]

Take that!

We can win this. Can't we, Wobburomi?

Wo... Wobbuffet.

Wo!

They used Counter?

-Then we'll just use Sketch.
-But what's Sketch?

Sketch is a move that copies the same move
a Pokémon's opponent just used.

[grunts]

[all grunt]

They're countering all over the place!

[all grunt]

Check this fashionable move. Charm's away!

[gasps]

[grunts]

Now's your big chance. [laughs]

Huh? [whines]

[groaning and whining]

[referee] Love, one!

[snarls] Who cares? We're just warming up.

-[thuds]
-Huh?

We're just about to get to the good part,

so, couldn't you wait a second,
pretty please?

[Team Rocket] We're off with a new blast!

[crowd cheers]

[Rotom] It's time for the final match!

[Kiawe] I just knew this would be
the final matchup!

[Ash] Yeah!

[all] Go, go, Ilima, go!
Beat that guy and have a great show!

Eevee!

So, Dragon Rage. We face off again.

Please. Big deal.
You're not going to know what hit you

I'm going to win this match!

It's always about you, isn't it?
Instead of both of you.

So, Manners Man thinks
he can lecture me, huh?

Well, the lecture's over, Ilima!

-[grunts]
-Use Pound to finish them off!

Mienshao!

[referee] One, love!

My kind of score!

-It just nicked the corner.
-They really are good.

Go for it, Ilima! Hit them hard!

-Go, go, Ilima, go, go, go!
-Smeargle, this is just the start.

Smeargle. Smear!

So, time to teach you a lesson, Ilima!

-[grunts]
-Get the point, Mienshao!

[grunts]

[grunts]

[referee] One, all!

-Nice return, Smeargle.
-Smear--

-Mienshao!
-[both] Huh?

Now I'm really mad!
This is all your fault!

You get the point on the next return or
you'll be sorrier than you've ever been!

[whimpers]

Come on! It was Ikari's mistake
that cost them the point.

Now I'm feeling really sorry for Mienshao.

Me, too, but the matchup's pretty even.

Mienshao!

[snarls] Will you get it together?

-Ilima just evened the score.
-And now it's ten to ten.

-That's a deuce.
-I've read all about a deuce before.

In a deuce situation,
they change server every point,

and the winner has to win by
a total of two points.

That means, since both teams
have already won one game apiece...

-Mm-hm.
-[giggles]

The winner of this game
will win the match!

[cheerleaders] Go, go, Ilima, go!
Beat that guy and have a great show!

Go, go, Ilima, go!
Beat that guy and have a great show!

[cheerleaders squeal]

My serve... now!

-[grunts]
-[screams]

Smeargle!

Huh? Hit it!

Mienshao!

-[referee] Advantage, Ilima and Smeargle!
-[crowd cheer]

That twist was simply the best.
Thank you.

Smeargle.

-Mien...
-Mienshao!

[whimpers]

You've done it now.

The next time you miss, you just
better hope there is no next time!

[Ilima] It isn't good training
to focus on negatives.

You should focus more on the positives
and encourage your partner.

Don't make me laugh!
I've got my own way of playing this game!

-As I thought. It's I instead of we.
-Say what?

The Trainer alone cannot possibly win
at this game.

The only thing I care about is
my own power.

Mienshao knows that better than anyone!

When I'm stronger, my team's stronger!
No one's going to tell me different!

That's not what Pokémon Ping-Pong's about.

Spare me! If you want to be a big shot,
do it after you beat me.

Here it comes... loser!

[both grunt]

-Smash it with Drain Punch!
-Shao!

-Now use Sketch!
-Smeargle! [grunts]

[snarls] I'll take you out of the game
with my slick, mondo smash! Ah!

[gasps]

-Hey, look out!
-Get out of the way!

Not I. I won't give up!

[grunts]

Use High Jump Kick and smash it back now!

[grunts]

-[gasps]
-Smear!

-Smeargle?
-Smeargle.

[screams]

Shao!

Mienshao.

Mien...

[referee] Game, set, and match!
Ilima and Smeargle are the winners!

[all] Well, all right!

Ilima and Smeargle won it!

[all] Way to go, way to go! Ilima, whoa!
You're the winner! What a great how! Yay!

Smeargle, thanks so much.

-Smeargle!
-Eevee.

[Ikari grumbles]

I'm sorry.
I regret having made my earlier remarks.

The relationships between Pokémon
and Trainer are many.

There are, of course, examples of strict
training leading to enhanced teamwork.

Next time,
you can count on us beating you.

Huh?

But until then, don't you dare lose
to anybody else.

Mienshao!

I won't and I hope that we remain
good rivals going forward.

Right!

[cheering]

[birds chirping]

[cheerleaders]
Take care, Ilima, sad to see you go!

Take care, Ilima,
we're going to miss you so!

Now, there's no reason for you
to cry just because of me.

[sobbing]

I must say, you've got class,
taking your own multi-island cruise

on your way back to Kalos.

I'll be back as soon as I can

and I'm looking forward to seeing each
and every one of you upon my return.

[all] Great!

It's too bad. You're leaving so quickly
after we just got to meet you.

That's so sweet.
I realize our time has been short.

But you all have taught me so very much.

I hope that we'll aim for the heights
together in the future.

[all] Right!

[Ash] Ilima, have a good trip!

[all] Have a good trip!

-[Mallow] We'll be waiting for you!
-[all] Goodbye. Take care.

[narrator] Saying goodbye is bittersweet
for Pokémon School graduate Ilima,

but it won't be too long
before he says hello again.

Then he and our heroes will show each
other how much they've grown,

as the journey continues.
