Patlabor: The New Files (1990–…): Season 1, Episode 5 - Saiyaku no hi - full transcript

"Labour" is the common name for robots
developed for industrial use.

Their use became widespread
in construction and civil engineering,

but Labour-related crimes
sky-rocketed as well.

To combat this, the Metro Police
created a Patrol Labour unit:

The Special Vehicles, Section 2.

This is the origin of Patlabor.

If the area of your dreams
comes under attack by tears

Or if you're just feeling down

Just call out my name in your heart

Hurry up, hurry up, wings of love

I'm going to fly into your skies

Condition green

I want to save you
from that deep sadness

I'm always picking up that
same pain on the radar in my heart

Mobile Police Patlabor

Shaft's Counterattack!

[Safety First]

You must've fought a monster.

The Zeroes?

Everyone saw them off
to the manufacturer.

Looks like they'll be spending
New Year's over there.

I suppose it shan't be a very happy
New Year's Eve for Shinobu.

Well, maybe this'll change things.

Change things?

Forget it.

I'm calling it a night.

That black Labour will probably
be too busy with preparations...

and adjustments
to come back this morning.

But it shall come back, though.

There's no reason
for it not to come back...

for a return match with the Ingram.

If anything comes up, give me a call.

I'm praying I shan't need to.

Good morning.

Hey. Get any sleep?

[Don't waste water]

[Don't waste water]
I was wide awake for some reason,
but now I'm dead tired.

It happens.

Do you think
the same person's piloting it?

The Black Labour, I mean.

Maybe.

It may be even stronger
than it was last time.

And what about you?

Huh? Me?

What do you think, Asuma?

Which kind of car is easier to drive?
A manual or an automatic?

An automatic, of course.

If you're just driving around
for fun, yes.

But a manual gives the driver
a much greater feeling of freedom.

Do you understand
what I'm getting at?

The Zero is an automatic.

An Ingram with you at the controls
can stop the Black Labour.

I have to stop it.

Is something wrong?

Black "LABOUR" Comes Back!

Peacemaker defeated

Kanuka!

Where's Bud?

I think he's still asleep.
He must be tired.

He went all-out.

Even a boy like Bud will settle down
for two or three days.

When's the next showing?

Let's be dramatic about this,
okay, Kurosaki?

Chief Utsumi! You have a phone call!

A police inspector
just came here a while ago!

Well, Japanese police are the best.

You ought to respect them.

This is no time to make jokes!

Listen, Utsumi.

They've had their eye on you
ever since the Harumi incident!

Which is why I'm hiding
on this ship.

Admirable, isn't it?

I warn you, what you're doing
is criminal, plain and simple!

Don't do anything to
implicate the company!

And one more thing: look up
the meaning of the word "admirable!"

Ooh, that's telling me off!
But Director, you must understand...

that every word you say...

makes me more difficult to deal with.

At my age, nothing's better
than green tea.

Liking hot tea over rice,
pickled plums,

and soy sauce
has nothing to do with age.

Do you remember
a man named "Utsumi," Goto?

How could I forget the one
who was in the car at Harumi...

with the man who shot
Officer Kumagami...

and is a witness
in the Black Labour incidents?

He was forced to resign
from Shaft Japan,

but he's a strange character.

We don't know anything
of his personal history.

The man was a section chief
at a huge company like that!

Such things don't just happen.

And that's not all;
it gets even stranger.

For instance, why did the Black Labour
pick that particular spot?

Don't keep me in suspense.

Shaft Japan owns rooms
in the Twin Tower Building.

I bet they could see how
the Labour fought very well from there.

I think that that's why
it came ashore there.

Sounds like it'll be tough
to get any leads from Shaft Japan.

That's for sure.

At any rate, it looks like
this Utsumi is the key to it all.

That much I'm certain of.

Do you have any leads
from trailing those Labour specialists?

They're all staying at a hotel in town.

We're understaffed, so we can't
follow them everywhere they go,

but if they start to move,
I'll give you a call.

Is your stomach bothering you?

Huh? No, I'm fine.

But...

Normally, we'd be on
New Year's break starting tomorrow,

but with that debacle last night...

Tamiko!

I promised her we'd go to
a hot spring together.

My, only a fool
would get married!

If you're feeling frustrated,
why don't you get married, Ota?

F-Frustrated?

Not at all!

Hey, Izumi!

[Do not run in the corridor!!]
What? You want me to ask Kumagami?

- Yes.
- But I'm not cut out for that sort of thing!

I think you are.

I am?

Just bring up the topic, okay?

Please.

I'm going to regret this.

I'll pick up from where you leave off.

And don't tell her I put you up to it.

Aren't you cold?

I like the cold in winter. It's bracing.

Did something happen
between you and Izumi?

Let's skip the cheap tricks, Captain.

Richard Won and the man who calls
himself Utsumi are one and the same.

You're right about that.

But nothing I know would be
of any use to the investigation,

so please leave me out of it.

You two were involved, weren't you?

Chief!

You could at least knock, Kurosaki.

Bud's gone!

Playing hide and seek, is he?

Should I go ashore and look for him?

What?

He hid on the launch
we use to go buy supplies!

Let me practice
against a moving target!

We don't have enough shells.

Anyway, what would you
practice on?

Then let me practice
with the riot gun!

We don't have any more shells
for the riot gun...

than we do for the revolver cannons.

Practice is over, Officer Ota!
Go have your Labour checked over.

But...

There's no telling
when we'll get a dispatch.

Roger.

Okay. You're next, Noa! Let's do it!

Roger.

Hold on, Izumi!
There's a ship passing by!

Hey!

It's okay.

What's okay?

Okay!

Hey! Noa!

Oh, man...

Bud!

What's the meaning of this?

Apparently, he went out
to SV2 to say "hi."

That sounds like fun.

Chief!

So did you run into anybody?

I made it as far as the front gate.

But then I remembered that man
we saw at the airport, so I came back.

Too bad you didn't remember
that before you left.

I hate this!

Bud...

No matter how good I get,
I can't brag to anybody!

I'm the one who took out the Zeroes!

I want to brag to Sis!

That's not like you at all.

What are you so worked up about?
You only cleared Level One.

When does Level Two start?

Soon.

Bud's dangerous.

To pick a delicious piece of fruit,

sometimes you must go out
on a fragile-looking branch.

Everything has its risks.

Hey, you're smiling.

I've always thought of you
as the type of person...

who would use a stick
to knock the fruit down, Chief.

I know you from Hong Kong,
that's why.

I think I've learned that
doing things that way...

sometimes crushes the fruit that
you went to all that trouble for.

You're still up?
Is it something I can help with?

No, I'm about to turn in, myself.

Come on, let's go.

'Morning!

Good morning!

'Morning!

Ah, it's cold!

Everybody is late this morning.

Actually, you're the last one in.
Everybody's down in the hangar.

I thought we weren't going
to hang them up this year.

Yes, but Sakaki said that
since they're good-luck charms,

Division 2 should
hang plenty of them up.

It's strange. This should be
just like any other day,

but when you feel the year winding
to a close, it's bracing.

New Year's is certainly something special.

It's a kind of punctuation.

Happy people hold on to that feeling,

and people who are down think,
"This year, I'll turn over a new leaf!"

It's like... I don't know...
Like something new is about to start.

Well, aren't we all grown up!

Don't make fun of me! I'm serious!

We're off to a new start together.
I like that.

["When leaving, do not
forget to lock your door."]

Hello, SV2 here.

Goto? It's Matsui.

They're moving.

Those specialists are all
checking out at once.

My head's starting to itch.

The president told me
what you're up to.

He told me to go to this
"auction" of yours.

Oh, dear.

Why didn't you talk to me
about this, Utsumi?

Well, Director...

That's because I really hate you.

No matter what you think about me,
you have Shaft Enterprises...

to thank for making you
what you are today!

There you go again...

I'd be happy anywhere, just so long as...

I can do what I want, how I want.

I hate to say it, but Shaft Japan
isn't too cosy in that respect now.

How really self-centred...

Don't worry.

Come what may, I'll return the Griffin
and its basic data to you.

I've never caused
the company any harm.

Right?

Chief Utsumi knows about this?

Do you want to go ask him?

No, that's not necessary.

But I'm just not sure
if we really need something like this.

All the better if we don't have to use it.

Call it insurance.

Chief!

I'll be right there.

Bud's just a child.
Don't put too much confidence in him.

Understand?

Round Two will be visible
from every hotel room, gentlemen.

I hasten to add that it is not
the Labour itself that is being sold,

but rather its development staff,
so please bear that in mind.

This may get a little bumpy,
so please hold on.

[Monthly Parking]

They got me. I fell for it
hook, line, and sinker.

No, it's enough. Thanks, Matsui.

Sir?

I hate to say this,
but forget about going home tonight.

I hear you.

Load up the spare batteries!

Don't dawdle!
Get the carriers warmed up!

And don't forget the big kid!

We knew this dispatch
would be coming,

so nothing needs to be said.

If this doesn't end here,
we shan't have much of a new year.

Kumagami. Yamazaki. Shinohara.
Izumi. Shinshi. Ota.

I'm counting on you.

Yes, sir!

The Hikari 7, bound for Shin-Osaka,
shall depart in a moment.

Please wait to board.

The unidentified black Labour
has come ashore...

once again near the Kasai Sealife Park.

This Labour was involved in the Harumi...

and Gates of Babylon incidents
this summer, and...

Go.

Grandma...

I'll be fine. I can go by myself.

You'd better go.
You'll regret it if you don't.

I'll catch up as soon as I can.

[Transfer]

Is the heater set too high?

No, it's fine.

When I looked out, the
storm had passed a long time ago.

The morning dew
betrays how yesterday's...

sorrows have been washed away.

Dawn is let loose by
unbolting the panels of night.

Even machines and
the buildings all wake up.

Now I can see so far
ahead, an unfolding panorama;

Wherever I watch from,
I see a peaceful, happy island.

What I want to tell to you,
What I want to show to you:

The shining gate to
our dreams lays open to us,

right now before our eyes.

This is a work of fiction...
but in ten years, who knows?
