Patlabor: The New Files (1990–…): Season 1, Episode 12 - Ni nin no karuizawa - full transcript

"Labour" is the common name
for robots developed for industrial use.

Their use became widespread
in construction and civil engineering,

but Labour-related crimes
sky-rocketed as well.

To combat this, the Tokyo Metropolitan
Police created a Patrol Labour unit:

the Special Vehicles, section 2.

This is the origin of Patlabor.

Somebody notices that
girl who came rushing in,

pushing against the waves
of people crashing by.

Fanned by the city's winds,
she does a silent dance just for fun,

making yesterday shine.

Even on days when sadness drops by
for a visit,

you stay in step,
staying true to yourself.

Red-hot glory...

When you believe
in that far-off future,

that's when you're even greater.

I want to tell you everything
I'm feeling now, 'cause...

Mobile Police Patlabor

Two in Karuizawa

Typhoon 17, which made landfall
this evening at Mikawa Bay,

is of average size and strength,
and has not changed course.

It is causing heavy rainfall
in all areas, and is moving northwards.

It is expected to cross Honshu and enter
the Sea of Japan early tomorrow.

Stay tuned for further...

Listening to the news
shan't do us any good at this point.

That doesn't sound
like the information nut I know.

I said "at this point," didn't I?

Before we'd left the health spa,
maybe, but not now...

when all we can do is drive straight
through it.

Or do you want to go back?

Still, you gave the top brass that big
salute, saying, "I will return to Tokyo!"

And I was in such a hurry that I
tripped going down the stairs...

and twisted my ankle.

After making such a fool of myself,
I have no intention of going back there.

I know you hate award dinners, so
you planned to skip it, too.

Don't laugh at me, all right?

That's not why I left.

You can't work the clutch
with your foot like that?

That officer's conference
didn't go very well...

Look, I don't want to pile on the bad
news here, but I don't trust this car.

You don't trust it?

Italians keep building cars without
really understanding electricity.

I mean, even those Supercars of theirs
blow up sometimes

That was a long time ago.

Electric systems are still their
weak point; that much hasn't changed.

It's dark and it's raining.

There's a heavy load
on the electric system.

I'm just saying that if
anything happens, it's not my fault.

Anyway,
why didn't you take your own car?

Safety inspection.

I dropped it off so it'd be ready
when I got back from the conference.

Well, if we don't run into traffic,
I don't think it'll give us any trouble.

Oops. Is that a traffic jam up there?

Goto, look!

Road Closed if Daily Rainfall
Exceeds 130mm.

Ah no.

So what do you think we should do?

Go back through Komoro, Ueda, and
Matsumoto to get to the Chuo Expressway.

I see.

So now we're back where we started.

Hey, you're thinking
about that konnyaku [yam cake], aren't you?

It had occurred to me.

Come on, Shimonita konnyaku
[yam cake] is great!

And thanks to that side trip, we
didn't get out of Karuizawa until late,

despite the fact that
we left the spa so early!

Come on, don't say it like that.

We never did find any.

I wanted to say,
"While we're wasting our time here,

they're closing the roads!"

If you had just given up on it
and headed straight for Tokyo,

we could've been on the
Kan'etsu Expressway a long time ago!

Yes, I suppose you're right.

Keep your eyes on the road.

Yes, ma'am.

Komoro Bypass Closed Due to Rain

Make it quick.

Let's see...

We can go back to North Karuizawa
to get to Shibukawa.

Ow!

We can get onto the
Kan'etsu Expressway from there.

This is a no-smoking car.

Have a heart, okay?
I've been holding off all day!

Non-smokers are sensitive to smoke.
I don't want to be told off by Keiko.

Keiko?

Oops.
This is definitely a non-smoker's car.

You're such a slob.

Wait, doesn't that route
of yours take us through Onioshidashi?

Wouldn't that area be closed off, too?

It's possible, but there's no way
to tell unless we go there.

We can't just sit here and wait
for the typhoon to pass?

Right on all counts, as always...

Are you being sarcastic?

Sarcastic? If that sounds sarcastic
to you, I think I have a problem.

All right, all right, I'm driving.

Does that hurt?

No, I'm fine.

I'm starving...

Once we get onto the Kan'etsu
let's stop and get something to eat.

I want to stretch a little, too.

Goto?

Yes?

Eyes forward!

What did you want?

Forget it.

I just wanted to say thanks,
that's all.

Really?

Forget it!

Closed

We have two options:

One, find another road.

Two, take down the chain and
keep going.

Two is out of the question.
We're police officers.

Which leaves us with option three.

Hey, do the headlights
seem dimmer to you?

You're just imagining it.

Really? Maybe I am.

So what's our third option?

All the main roads are closed,
so we have no way out.

There may be others,
but if the main roads are like this,

then I doubt we can expect anything
from overblown back-roads.

Still, we can't just sit here and wait
for the typhoon to pass.

Right.

Do you want
to find somewhere to sleep?

Sleep?

I don't want to drive
all night.

I don't have that kind of stamina.

"Active-Service Assistant Inspector
Falls Asleep at Wheel, Causes Accident?"

And then they'd say,
"Members of the Notorious SV2,"

and start detailing
what we're notorious for!

I'd rather you didn't compare yourself
to me, but I understand.

So that settles it then?

That settles it.

Um, Goto? Wait a minute!

What?

What do you mean?
You want to stop here?

Is that a problem?

But it's... This is a...

I don't want to go in there.

If we went back to Karuizawa I'm sure
we could find a regular hotel or inn,

but I didn't think we'd want to run
into anybody from the conference.

I was just trying to be careful.

But...

If we're just going to sleep,
what's the difference?

Well, I suppose you're right...

No Vacancy

Don't look at me like that!

Shinobu?

Could you pick a room?

Oh. Sure.

Which one?

Whichever. Just pick one you like.

Oh. Okay.

I suppose it doesn't really matter.

Room 202!

Yes, ma'am.

Are you into this kind of thing,
Shinobu?

No, but you said it didn't matter, so...

It makes me wonder...

How about some tea?

I'll just grab a beer.

If you want, why don't you go
ahead and take a shower?

A shower...

I bet the glass steams
up if you use hot water.

I'll take one after I make sure.
You can go first, Goto.

Oh, okay.

Here, you can have this.

Don't look, okay?

I'm not going to look!

Shinobu?

Hey, Shinobu.

Look, you can't see through it now.

After you.

I thought she'd be relieved...

What the heck
is she doing out there?

Thank you for letting me use
the bath first.

You're welcome.

Oh, you didn't drink yours?

I thought I'd save it for later.

Yes, they do taste better
after you come out of the bath.

Whew, that's good...

What?

Um... I...

I'll go get my change of clothes.

A change of clothes?

How many changes of clothes
do women need for a two-day trip?

Huh? She was planning
on a three day trip all along?

Black Rattlesnake Drink

I wonder if it actually works.

Well, I'll use the shower.

Okay, have fun.

Hey, that was sneaky.

Look who's talking.
Maybe I should use my handcuffs.

No, that won't be necessary.
I'll stop.

Next typhoon report: 1:00.

How tired I am...

Um, Shinobu?

It's late,
so maybe we should turn in.

Oh. Um, sure.

I'll take the sofa.

But there's no extra blanket.

There isn't?

There's just this one.

I can do without.

Look, you need a blanket.

I'll be fine with a bath towel
across my stomach.

But...

Yes?

Would it really bother you
if I took the sofa and you took the bed?

That's okay.

But that doesn't solve
our basic problem here.

And what would
that "basic problem" be?

For one, we're...

Or is it a problem?

I wouldn't know.

Well, okay.

Good night, then.

Do you know how
to turn off the lights?

Not really.

Shinobu? Are you awake?

You actually got
a good night's sleep?

I suppose so. How about you?

Actually,
I don't remember sleeping at all.

Can you drive? Stay alert, now.

I want a reward.

Like what?

Once I'm finished being chauffeur
for you,

how about going to a hot spring
with me?

I suppose I could go to a hot spring
in town, like the Azabu #10 spring,

or maybe the Soshiya hot spring.

Oh. Just as a day trip?

Even if the winds of
time push me from behind,

I want to go my own way.

Yes, you can search
the whole world over,

but there's only one dream
for the two of us.

Oh, let's make that dream come true
a bit at a time...

until it shines in all the colours
of the rainbow.

I always want to be joined
in tenderness to you...

in my 100-carat heart.

This story is a work of fiction...
but in ten years, who knows?

My grave-keepers, I have arisen in search
of revenge and my amulet!

The dungeon master, the ruler of that
underground labyrinth, has returned!

Some maintenance crew members
disappeared at about the same time!

Come on, Noa! Let's start looking!
Follow me!

I swore I'd never go
down there again...

What awaits our little party?
Terror or riches?

Next time!
The Dungeon Again!

Target, locked on!
