Party of Five (1994–2000): Season 2, Episode 12 - Hold on Tight - full transcript

Bailey and Justin are almost amused to bump into each-other with their partners in the cellar, Julia makes a scene over lack of privacy and claims the attic to turn into her room. Bailey however rightly lays a better claim, being older and having shared his room with Owen. Julia not only meanly fights him but assumes that Sara turning up at the band singers audition she hoped for must by Bailey's doing and willingly convinces soon unamused Justin to successfully apply for the TV studio job Bailey hoped to pay his college with. Charlie cheerfully accepts helping out Kirsten with her babysitter income taxes and is delighted they end up in bed, but she maintains that changes nothing. Ross expected Claudia to resume violin lessons swiftly now her cask is off, but she fakes pain and ultimately confesses she chose to give up music to have a 'normal life', actually still Jody's terrible influence. Only Bailey respects her decision, the other siblings' nagging only infuriates her. A letter from Boston accepting Bailey as student makes Julia see reason again.

I was worried you were gonna
be at school or something.

Um, yeah.

Listen, I really need
to talk to you.

I mean, you're the only
sensible person I know.

This might not be
the best time. I mean, don't you think
playing the violin

should be
my decision? I mean,
they're all acting like

they know what's best for me,
but when really...

Oh, hey, you're fixing
the, uh...

Oh. Claud, I...

Someone's here?

Yeah. Someone is.

I'll call next time.

I'm sorry.

[exhales]

Close call.

Is she okay?

She seems really upset.

Yeah.

She's torn up about
all this violin stuff.

I'll deal with it.

I'm just glad,
on top of everything else,

she didn't, you know...

That would've
been a mistake.

It's too soon.

Yeah. Exactly.

Are you crazy?
It's cute.

Yeah, well,
you're biased.

Julia, wanna see
something really gross?

Hmm?

Wow, that was fast.
You've got a gig already?

Yeah. Baptism by fire.
The first show is next week.

But this picture
of me, ugh!

I mean, it looks like
those paintings

of the kids with
the really big eyes.

Hey, Justin.

Hey, uh... So?

So...

[exhales] Yes.

-Yes?
-Yes.

-You got it?
-I got it.

Oh!

Seven-fifty an hour
plus overtime.

Give me two weeks
for that first paycheck,
and we'll splurge.

Mmm. That is so fantastic.

-You got a job?
-Hey, congratulations.

Yeah, at Channel 12.

Channel 12?

Yeah. You know,
that TV station?

Are you kidding?

Well, it's nothing
glamorous,

total "low man
on the totem pole" stuff,

but, you know,
it's still cool.

Wow. That is...
That is so low.

You knew I wanted
that job.

Wait, you applied?

He applied?

I guess Justin
was more qualified.

I can't believe
that you would actually--

What?
Follow your example?

Like it was
a coincidence

that Sarah tried out
for the band

after I said
I was going to.

-What? Bailey--
-God, Julia!

It hurts, doesn't it,

I mean,
having someone take
something that's yours?

I mean, I did hurt you,
didn't I?

Good, 'cause
I wanted you to know

how it feels, how I felt.

Hey, that job could've
helped me get into a college.

So what? You think that
makes a difference?

You think that
getting into that band
mattered any less to me?

You just take
whatever you want, Bailey!

So, what is this,
an eye for an eye?

I don't know.
You tell me.
You started it.

I started it?
What are you, five?

I tell you what, Julia.

Why don't you just go take
the stupid attic, okay?

Lock yourself up there,
and stay
the hell out of my life!

Oh, that's a joke, right?

Because I'm not even
in your life.

I am totally irrelevant.

You could care less
what I think, or how I feel,
or what I want--

Yeah, you're right.

You're exactly right.
I don't care.

Yeah. Well,
who needs you?

Who needs you?

Sarah.

Justin.

Sarah.

Okay, you tell me.

You explain to me how I'm
supposed to get up on-stage

and sing and pretend like
I'm having a great time

when I feel so completely
lousy about this?

I don't...

Why are you turning this
into some big thing?

"You have such
a great voice, Sarah."

I totally meant that.

But that's not why
you told me

about the audition, Bailey.

It was spite,
plain and simple.

You wanted to get back
at Julia, so you used me.

-I didn't...I didn't use you.
-Yes, you did.

You put me in the middle,
and I don't wanna be there.

Look, I didn't mean for you
to get caught in this

or to get hurt
or anything.

You know that.

But you meant to
hurt her, right?

Look, I don't understand what's
going on with you guys, Bailey.

You used to be good friends.
Now it's like all you do is...

Fight. And you do these
crummy things to each other.

And you know what?
You wanna do that?

Go ahead. Just leave
me the hell out of it.

Justin! Justin, wait a second.

Why are we fighting?

I mean, I helped you get
this great job.

The only reason
you told me about it

was to get back at Bailey.
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!

Don't deny it.

Look, there is
no way you two are

the only ones who applied.

Are you gonna feel bad
about everyone else too?

No. It's just I haven't
known those people

for, like,
seven-eighths of my life.

And you know
what else?

This, uh, little war
you guys are having

doesn't exactly bring out
your best qualities.

Julia?

[rock music playing]

Vivaldi.

Concerto Opus 7.

It's worth at least
40 bucks.

I'll give you 15.

Fifteen?

What? Are you deliberately
trying to insult me,

or do you have something
personal against Vivaldi?

-[sighing]
-Look,

let's make a deal.

You see these
disks here?

They enough
to get me Hole,

the Red Hot
Chili Peppers,

Foo Fighters...

And basically
anything--

By anybody who
hasn't been dead
for the past 200 years

[Julia]
What is it they say about
college acceptance letters?

Thick they want you,

thin they don't?

This was in the mail.

[music playing on stereo]

"Mr. Salinger, we are pleased
to inform you of your...
Early admission."

Oh, my God.

Oh, my God. No way.

This is...

This is...

Return address
says Massachusetts.

Uh, yeah.

It's... Boston. That's...

And I didn't know
you were applying...
That far.

I, uh...
I didn't tell anybody.

And I'm not
going to tell yet.

Sarah or Charlie
or anyone.

Okay.

Wow.

Who would've thought?

Is something wrong?

No.

I don't know.

Charlie, have you
told anybody about us?

Not yet. Have you?

Not yet. Right.

That feels right.

If people knew
that we were--

What?

We were what?

Back together?

Are we back together?

I think... Maybe.

Don't you?

No.

No. We never make plans.

We never leave
this apartment.

And everything
we talk about,

it's just stuff
from before.

What are you saying?

Do you wanna
go out more? Do you...

Do you wanna
make more plans.

Do you wanna tell people
that we're together?

Not really.

Do you?

It's like we're just
holding on to each other.

We're just...

We're just lying here
holding on
to each other.

So maybe this...

Maybe this was never
about starting again.

Maybe we were just...

Trying to find a way
to end this, you know?

That isn't so angry
and doesn't hurt so much.

I keep thinking...

Keep imagining how
things would've been
if we'd met later.

Five or six years later.

With all this other stuff
figured out.

Like I would've been
walking down some street,
you know,

Some crowded street,
and...

I would've seen you...

And there would've
been something,

I don't know,
in your eyes,

something.

And I would've known.

Just known.

I would've said... "There she is.

There she is.
She's the one."

And I would've been too.

[thumping]

[louder thumping]

What are you doing?

Oh. Hey.

Thought you were
going out with Sarah.

Yeah. We were
gonna, but...

Where's Justin?

[Julia] He's, um...

Well, I told him
I was doing this, so...

Anyways, I think it'll
probably need a face-lift

by the time you're finished
trashing the place,

but I figured
it was fine for now.

You're...

You're doing this for me?

Well, yeah.

I mean,
I know we haven't been
getting along great lately.

And I've been
thinking about you a lot.

About you going away.

I mean, you may
only be here

for another
six months, so...

[Bailey] So what?

All we do is fight
all the time, anyway.

I mean, I thought you'd be
happy about it, Jule.

Like,
jumping-up-and-down happy.

Are you kidding me?

I'm gonna miss you.

I'll really
miss you, Bay.

[playing classical piece]
