Packed to the Rafters (2008–2013): Season 5, Episode 11 - The Right Time - full transcript

Ben is confident he'll get a bank loan to buy the cottage, but misses his first appointment due to Carbo's absurd indoor game. After Julie insisted to give even Frankie her job back, the 'sparkies' are reunited, but tiptoeing insecurity. The whole gang joins a picnic and 'touch football' game in the park organized by Carbo, who failed thus to seduce Ben into staying in Syndey. Retta has a stillbirth. So Ben is confronted with one of Mel's former hospital colleagues and opts for a new life with Emma, but she backs out, claiming he's not ready and may never be to commit fully again. Reviewing a fake Italian restaurant for the paper consummates Dave and Julie's complete reconciliation.

When's the right time?

Mother Nature always knows.

When to grow,
when to flower, give fruit.

If only it was that easy
for the rest of us.

Oi, Benno, beer o'clock?

It's five minutes past.

-Hey, it's looking all right.
-Mm.

I finally found something
I'm good at other than

pulling beers
and annoying Donna.

Hey, mate, keep this up
then we can start

saving ourselves some bucks.

Hey, uh, seriously,

do you reckon
we could grow some bananas?

-Hey, boys.
-Oh.

Hello, beautiful.

-You'd know.
-Know what?

Bananas. You reckon
we can grow some here?

Ah, they, grow in clusters
about six meters high.

I don't think
you'd have the space.

Ah, right.

Besides, they're not trees
at all, they're herbs.

-Bananas?
-Yeah.

Hey, I've got
to show you something.

-Ben.
-Back in a tick.

Isn't it a bit early for this?

Dun, dun, dun, dun,
dun, dun, dun, dun.

What?

Off the TAFE site.

You can finish
your course online.

-And the farm--
-Oh, it's a farm now, is it?

All right.
Market garden. Whatever.

Counts towards your marks
like a project.

And there's another thing.

Scallions.

There's a big demand for them.

You have been busy.

Yeah, and check this out.

A loan application.

What?

You're still into this?

-Well, yes, but...
-But what?

Ah, shouldn't we,
I don't know...

Talk to my lecturer?
See how much she's asking?

Already did. She loves you.
Teacher's pet.

It's a done deal
if we get the loan.

But what if we don't?

Well, we'll find out tomorrow.

That's when
the appointment is.

Ben, I don't have my half
of the deposit sorted.

Yeah, I already told you,

the insurance money,
there's heaps.

Well, that's your money.

Being invested in our future.

What's wrong?
We said we wanted this.

Oh, I just didn't expect us
to go ahead this fast.

When you say "herb",
do you mean like mint?

All good in the hood?

Is that a yes?

- Okay.
-Is it? Yes?

-Yes! Yeah!
- Yes, yes!

-Did you just--
- No.

-No.
-Oh, I'm sorry.

-Should we tell him?
-Not yet.

There's other people
to tell first.

How much are they asking?

Actually it's all done.

I've made an offer
and they've accepted.

Oh, so your loan's been
approved?

No, not yet, but it will be.

Mel's insurance money's
a fair deposit so...

Well, hang on,
you've made an offer

before your loan's
been approved?

You haven't paid them in
advance or anything, have you?

-No, not yet.
-Good.

Oh, thanks for the vote
of confidence.

No, darling,
it's a big investment.

We just want to make sure you
go about things the right way.

Mom, it's happening.

We just want to make sure
that you're both happy for us.

Well, if your heart's set
on it...

It is.

Then we're happy for you.

Might even fix up your wiring.

Thank you.

You're the best.

The time was right.

I was sure of it.

A huge commitment.

Well, we're the ones
who've been on his case

-to invest in something.
-Mm.

And if he falls,
we'll be there to catch him

-like we always have.
-Will we?

Yeah.

We've just been through
a bumpy patch, that's all.

Come on.
You and me are like...

swans.

What's football
got to do with this?

-No swans, the birds.
-Oh.

So we're an endangered
species?

No. No, we mate for life.

Oh.

And major brownie points,
by the way.

What for?

The way you took Ben's news.

Oh, what'd you expect?

-Oh, Mom, please.

And I suppose
this was all your idea?

Ah, well...

No, we made
the decision together.

Ah, well, if the decision's
already been made...

Mom, it's not like that.

It's what we want to do
and it's not that far.

We'll visit
and you can visit us,

have weekends in the country.

It's a beautiful place.
You'd love it.

Wouldn't she, Ben?

Yeah, there's trees,
fresh air and...

-goats.

-Oh, Mom.
-I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

I'm very happy for you.

It sounds idyllic.

Perhaps I should just go
and pop the kettle on.

- Weekends?
-Oh, come on.

It's not like
she'll be around all the time.

Weekends'd be lovely.

In the country.

With goats.

Oh, Mom.

So far so good.

Ah, you've still
got to tell Carbo.

Ah, no probs.

If I'm happy, he's happy.

-No, no, no, no, no, no!
-Carbo!

Come on, you knew
we were thinking about it.

Oh, yeah, and I've thought
about getting my chest waxed.

-Really? When?
-About a month back.

It was just a thought.

Anyway, the point is,

it was a dumb idea
just like this.

We're not the only ones
moving on.

I'm not going anywhere.

In fact, if you want to grow
more vegies in the yard...

That's not what I meant.

Yeah, you're going
to be a dad soon.

In like, a year.

Six months actually.

See? Ages?

Although, they say your first
is usually late,

so maybe like, six and a bit.

And that's pretty soon.

Come on, this is a great
opportunity for us.

Yeah, it is.

But I am going to miss our
games nights like charades.

Oh, me too.

But we'll make up for it,
hit the town.

Yeah, only when
I can drink again.

You're still my best mate.

For some people,
it's never the right time.

So when Emma went to London,
I put on five kilos.

I'm not very good company
though, am I?

Don't be silly.

I'll tell you what.

tomorrow night?

-Mm-mm.
-Well, what about we grab

an early dinner and a movie?

-Mm.
-My shout.

So, how are you anyway?

Oh, I can't complain.

I've been reading

Yeah, after what you said
about me forgetting things...

Oh, Ted forget what I said.

I mean, not that you
necessarily would forget.

I- I-- I'm just being, um...

-Concerned?
-Yes.

-But you were right.

Well, there were a couple
of weird things that happened,

you know, silly things,
so I went online.
