No Ordinary Family (2010–2011): Season 1, Episode 18 - No Ordinary Animal - full transcript

The Powell's lives are in danger when a super-villain with animal-like powers is tasked by Mrs. X to eliminate the family. Meanwhile, good girl Daphne takes a rebellious step by ditching school with boyfriend Chris to attend a Sara Bareilles music video shoot; JJ becomes suspicious of Mr. Litchfield's motives when he's presented with different equations from those of the rest of the academic decathlon team; and Katie makes a shocking discovery about Joshua - aka The Watcher.

We were no longer
an ordinary family.

And we soon realized

we weren't alone.

I hear people's thoughts.

I can make them think

or not think certain things.

I don't love you.

Stay out of my life, Joshua.

Forever.

You think Dr. King is in charge?

This is so much bigger
than any of you think.

Mr. Winnick?

So, what do you want?

To offer you a job.

Hello?

Something you
don't see every day.

Police think it was
an animal attack.

In Montcliff Park? Right?

Closest thing I've
seen to wildlife there

was an obese squirrel
eating waffle fries.

Whatever did this
didn't do it for food.

There are no bite marks.

What do you think it
was, a mountain lion?

No, man, mountain
lions have what,

four claws? This thing had five.

Weirder still, police combed
the trail, didn't find any tracks.

What kind of animal
doesn't leave tracks?

Come here.

You got a friend over at
the coroner's office, right?

Yeah, why?

Why don't you give him a
call? See what he turns up.

What are you thinking?

Maybe this wasn't an
animal at all. Maybe it was a...

A super?

You should've seen the photos.

This poor woman,
clawed beyond recognition,

but no evidence
of an animal attack.

All the supers I know are
super-human, not super-animal.

We've already seen
humans turn into mist, fire...

Guess we can't rule out
anything until we know

exactly how the Trilsetum's
capable of affecting people.

Well, I'll bet Dr. King
already knows.

Look, now that you're
part of his project,

you've gotta have access
to some sort of database,

a list of patients
and their abilities?

Well, he is meticulous.

I'm sure he keeps
records of everything.

We have to know
what else is out there.

Hey. Hey.

Guess what?

I don't know. I'm not the
one who can read minds.

Anyway,

do you know who
Sara Bareilles is?

How could I not? She is
on every playlist you make.

Yeah, I pay attention.

Well, I just found out she's in
town, shooting her new video

at Windward Amphitheater.

Seriously? Yeah.

When?

Well, today, as
in this afternoon.

Well, that's a good
enough reason to ditch.

Ditch?

As in school?

Yeah. Wait...

Isn't that what you
were gonna say?

No, I just thought that it
was cool she was in town.

I can't actually go.
My parents would...

Look, you just tell
them it's all good,

in your oh-so-persuasive
brainwashing way.

I don't really like to do that

too often.

Besides, I was gonna finish my
history paper during math class.

Okay, so, that's it?

If your history paper
was done, you'd ditch?

I guess.

Okay. Great. That's all
I need to know, okay?

Mr. Litchfield, I
couldn't help but notice

that my packet has
different practice

problems than the
rest of the team.

Giving you the same work as them

would be like asking Stephen
Hawking to play Chutes and Ladders.

But this equation,

it's beyond anything they'd ever
ask in an Academic Decathlon.

Are you afraid you aren't up
to the challenge, Mr. Powell?

At least tell me what
I'm trying to solve.

I mean, where did you get this?

It doesn't matter.

How do you expect me to balance

a complex bio-chemical equation

without some sort of context?

Just answer them.

Dr. King?

Stephanie, come in, come in.

Always lovely to see you.

Thank you.

You know, I was thinking,

in order to be a more
effective part of your team,

I should probably get to know the
patients you treated before I started.

If there's a
database of patients

and their reactions
to the serum.

A database...

For instance,

did any of the past patients
display animalistic tendencies?

I haven't come across that
yet, no. Why do you ask?

There was a death in
Montcliff Park this morning.

The police thought it was an
animal based on the claw marks,

but the evidence was
inconsistent, so I...

So you thought it
might be one of ours.

Look, just so you know,

we're very thorough
with our evaluations.

But I'll let you know if I come
across anyone with claws.

I have a few questions for you.

The first is,

are you an idiot?

Excuse me? It's a
yes or no question.

Are you an idiot?

No.

Good.

Then you must have
had some logical reason

for leaving behind
that woman's body.

I mean, a non-idiot would know
that there has to be an autopsy,

and an autopsy could
lead to some very

uncomfortable questions
as to her identity.

People heard her screaming.

What was I supposed
to do? Kill them, too?

Just because I'm like this,

I'm not an animal.

Regardless,

that body cannot
be traced back to us.

What do you want me to do?

Go fetch.

George St. Cloud, please?

George.

You know that Jane Doe
you were asking about?

I... I think you need
to see this for yourself.

He sounded spooked. Said
he'd never seen anything like it.

Well, do you know what he meant?

I didn't want to get
into it over the phone

in case your hunch
about the super was right.

Well, maybe he
was lifting evidence.

You know, like the
killer's fingerprints or DNA.

Whatever he found, it was
definitely something strange.

That was crazy.

When I go to a morgue, I
expect to see dead people, yes,

but pre-dead people.

Maybe there was
something about Jane Doe

the killer didn't want
anyone else to find out.

That would explain why
he went after the body.

And then maybe the
coroner got in his way.

And that would explain why
the coroner needs a coroner.

At least you guys were
able to snag his report.

Listen to this,

according to the autopsy,
Jane Doe's DNA was mutated.

"Her cells were filled with chloroform
and adenosine triphosphate."

Why does that sound familiar?

Because they're
the same chemicals

I found when I tested our blood.

Jane Doe had a huge amount
of Trilsetum in her system.

So the victim was a super, too.

Area units be advised,
aftermath of a 10-90E.

Vicious animal attack
at Laurel and Woodson.

Guys, is this gonna
mean more blood?

'Cause I already need
a night-light to sleep.

We got it. Stay here.

Hey!

JJ.

Little dude. I've
been looking for you.

And I feel a request coming on.

Okay, well, see, Daph and I were

planning on cutting
out early today.

Daphne's ditching school?

It's a work in progress.

She won't leave unless she
finishes her history paper.

I'm sure she'll finish
it. She's a smart girl.

But she's not as smart as you.

I was thinking you
could write it for her.

Why would I do that?

Come on, JJ.

What?

I know what's what.

What do you mean "what's what"?

You're gonna make
me say it? Here?

In front of the
mortals of PB High?

Because I'm sure
they would love to know

that they go to school
with a super-genius.

You think about
it, Powell, okay?

I can't believe you
told Chris about us!

I had to! No.

You wanted to! You could've
kept pushing his thoughts.

But that's so manipulative.

What kind of a
relationship is that?

So your dirty-haired boyfriend is
more important than our family?

You know, if Mom
and Dad found out...

But they don't have to. Look,
for the first time in forever,

I finally get to be myself
with somebody I care about.

He knows what happened
to me and yet he still likes me,

maybe even more because of it.

Do you know how that feels, JJ?

Fine. I will write
your dumb paper.

But I need something in return.

Now, Mr. Litchfield is
acting weirder than normal.

I need you to read
his mind and find

out why this Academic Decathlon

is so epically important to him.

Deal?

Deal.

What are you doing here, Powell?

Desk sarge sent me down,
see if I could get a sketch.

Sorry, no witnesses,
so no sketches.

Yeah, this place is a mess.

We don't even got a body, and no
clue what the hell happened here.

What'd you get?

It's the same killer.

His claw marks are
all over the place.

Victim looks like he was
some sort of drug addict.

Yeah, question is,
what kind of drug?

I couldn't get close enough.

That's my specialty, hon.

I'll be right back.

Okay. You were half
right. He was a drug addict.

Guess what his
drug of choice was.

The Trilsetum?

Exactly.

Come on, let's go.

Okay, we're all
clear. You ready?

No, but let's do it.

And just where do you
two think you're going?

Oh, God, we're dead.

No, we're not.

Yes. We're going to
get suspended and my

dad's gonna kill
me. Therefore, I die.

No. You can do anything you want
in this world. Anything, any time.

Just remember how
special you are, Daph.

Chris Minor,

I'm not surprised to see you
trying to exit the premises, again,

but with Daphne Powell?

You both need to
join me in my office.

Immediately.

Daphne.

Vice Principal Nance,

we're not going to your office.

No real need to go
to my office, is there?

A note, get us a note.

And you should write us a
note excusing us from class.

You know what?

I'm going to write you a note
excusing you both from class today.

Come on. Do one more.

How about some extra money?

For gas.

Before you go,

buy yourselves a little
something special, on me.

All right, here's what we know,

two supers have been
targeted and killed.

And it seems a
third is our suspect.

But why kill one
of his own kind?

You know what, can
I just ask a question?

Does it really matter?

If this guy wants
to find all the

super-villains and
take care of them,

why should we stop him?
He's doing us a favor, isn't he?

George,

people are being
murdered in cold blood.

Yeah, cold-blooded people.

That second victim had
an impressive rap sheet.

Wouldn't doubt if the
same goes for Jane Doe.

So you're saying,
when it comes to

supers, it's guilty
until proven innocent?

Chances are, yeah.

Powell family excluded.

Look, if our super-vigilante
wants to take out all the bad people,

why should we risk our
own lives getting in his way?

After what I've seen firsthand,

these people being turned
into monsters against their will,

I can't say that any
of them deserve to die.

Especially not like this.

Now, if no one can stop
this guy, then we have to.

With or without your help.

Steph, do not be like that.
You know I'm gonna help you.

The problem is, we gotta figure
out where this guy is headed next.

I'm sorry. I didn't
mean to scare you.

No, it's my fault.

I tend to spaz
when I find strange

men lurking in front
of my apartment.

Not that you're strange.

Or even necessarily lurking.

Can I help you?

Actually, I'm looking
for a friend of mine.

I understand he's
been staying here.

Well, if you're talking
about Joshua, trust me,

this is the last place
you're gonna find him.

Really?

Yep.

Now, I'm pretty
sure he's been here.

Well, I'm even prettier
sure that he's not here now.

We broke up and I
haven't talked to him since,

so...

Well, all right.

Okay.

I'm sorry to have bothered you.

It's you.

It's me what?

Oh, my God!

Okay, whoever you think I am,

I'm pretty sure you've got me
confused with somebody else.

Ain't no use lying to me.

I know you're one of them, too.

I'm not lying.

At times like this I
make it a firm policy

to exclusively tell the truth.

Okay.

Someone or something
tried to attack me.

A man, but with claws.

And not like hot,
Wolverine claws,

but like scary,
wild animal claws.

And he said he was
looking for Joshua.

Okay,

and what are you looking for?

Well, maybe he was right.
Maybe Joshua's here, too.

Under your bed?

I don't know.

He lied about everything else,
maybe he can turn invisible, too.

Katie, Joshua's not coming back.

All right.

Then who just telekinetically
launched that manimal

into my neighbor's car?

What the...

Did I just do that?

Yeah, I think that
you just did that.

Okay. I need to sit down.

All right.

So far this guy's
only attacked supers.

So he must have known
somehow that Katie has powers.

How?

I didn't even know
I have powers.

And also, how the
hell do I have powers?

Katie, I'll take you to the
lab and we'll run some tests.

No, no.

We have to take
her someplace safe.

If this guy went after Katie,
he's not working off some hit list.

He's like an animal. Hunting.

Hunting anyone who has powers.

The kids. Kids.

I'll pull them out
of school right now.

I can get there
faster. All right.

Me and Katie'll
meet you at the lair.

Okay. Let's go.

Okay.

What are the odds you're
calling me with good news?

I got news,

you tell me if it's good or not.

The list of targets you gave me,

it's incomplete.

What are you talking about?

There's people out there

with the scent who aren't on it.

Like this family, the Powells.

Are you sure?

Well, you don't pay me to guess.

So,

what do you want
me to do about it?

Kill them all.

List or no list.

If there's Trilsetum in their
blood, I want them dead.

The kid refuses to do the work.

This sounds more like a "you"
problem than a "me" problem.

Maybe if I knew why these
equations were so important, I could...

You have three
degrees, Mr. Litchfield.

And you're teaching high school.

Since when has knowledge
helped you achieve anything?

I can't just force him to do it.

We each have our own
ways of getting things done.

Do I need to show you mine?

No, sir.

I'll get it done.

Mr. Powell! Mr. Powell!

I said you needed
to finish this.

Why were you unable to
complete these equations?

Look, I have to get
to my next class.

I'll speak to your next teacher.

They'll understand
if you're tardy.

But I need to see some progress.

You need to see a shrink.

What was that?

Mr. Powell, don't
underestimate my authority here.

JJ? Mom?

Mrs. Powell,

I was just complimenting your
son on his tenacity and haircut.

Great. Look, we have
a family emergency,

and I need to take JJ out of
school for the rest of the afternoon.

Whatever you need.

Keep up the good work, JJ.

Where's your sister? She's
not in her fifth-period class.

I don't know. What's going on?

Okay, I'll explain later.

Just, right now, we
just need to find her.

It's not safe for any
of us to be alone.

Well, I don't think
that she's alone.

Wait.

JJ, Daphne could
be in real trouble.

If you know where
she is, you need to...

She's with Chris. They ditched.

And went where? I don't know.

Chris just said that they were
gonna do something special.

Thank you so
much for coming out.

Are you ready to do this?

Sorry. You guys
are not on the list.

Come on, it's a video shoot.

You're telling me
there's not enough room

for two more
people in the crowd?

Unless they changed the
definition of "not on the list,"

then yeah, that's
what I'm telling you.

At least we tried.

But we haven't tried everything.

Look, come on. We're here.
Let's just have some fun.

You really wanna
go back to school,

listen to Ms. Becker
drone on about cosines?

You're a good person,
Daphne. You deserve this.

So, what do you say?

I say...

Excuse me.

Look, I told you...

I know, we're not on the list.

But what you didn't realize
is that we're with Sara's label,

and you need to escort
us to the front row.

Right. Sorry.

Let me get you some laminates.
Follow me to the front row.

Thanks.

You are so cool.

I know. Keep telling me that.

Angular, like the Joker.

In the cartoon, not the movie.

And intense,

Hulk-like eyes.

Okay.

What?

Not green eyes.
Dark, intimidating eyes.

You said Hulk-like.

I meant in demeanor.

Hair?

Lots of it.

Scruffy, unkempt, dark.

Very Tony Stark in his
Demon in a Bottle days.

How did someone as fine
as you become such a geek?

What are you doing?

Trying to make something
move across the room and hit you.

Of all the frigging sidekicks to

get superpowers,
it had be this one?

We got him.

How about these guys?
Any of them look familiar?

Yes. That one.

Lucas Winnick.

Well, his file says that
he's currently on death row.

Well, then, what was he
doing standing in my front yard?

I think I know.

Lucas Winnick is a
patient of Dr. King's.

Wait, you've met the
guy who attacked me?

Not just that.

I think I created him.

Maybe he wants
some sort of revenge.

Well, I'm not gonna stand
here and wait to find out.

Where you going?

His last known address.

We have to find this
guy before he finds us.

Wait, Jim. Has anyone
heard from Daphne?

She wasn't at school?

No. And she's not
answering her cell.

I'm gonna go look for her.

No, no, no, you find Winnick.

I'm going to go
back to the house,

see if Daphne's there and
bring her back here, okay?

All right. Okay.

I'm gonna need a bigger lair.

Daphne?

Daphne! If you're here with
Chris, we'll talk about that later.

But right now we have
to get somewhere safe.

She's not here, Dr. Powell.

But I don't want you to worry.

Now that I got her scent,

I can find her
for you real quick.

Look, if you're angry about
what happened to you, I can...

Angry?

Why would I be angry?

You set me free.

And for that, I ask
you to spare my family.

You mean like "you
scratch my back,

"I scratch yours" kind of thing?

Look,

you've been given a second
chance. Don't waste it like this.

And do what?

Get a job?

You know anyone
else who's going to

hire somebody off of death row?

Anyone else? Did
someone hire you to kill us?

Doesn't matter.

No. No, look,

if there's someone else behind
this, you could turn them in.

Make a deal. We have
a friend that's an ADA,

maybe we could help
you get a lighter sentence.

After everything I've done?

You'd really do that for me?

Yes. Yes, I would.

Why?

Because,

more than anyone, we understand
what you're going through.

Dr. Powell, your concern means

absolutely nothing to me.

On the bright side,

at least you won't have to watch
me kill the rest of your family.

Look! Look, look.

What?

It moved!

It didn't move.

Well, then, you
must not have been

looking, because
it definitely moved.

Look. There.

You shook the table.

Okay, fine. So I
shook the table.

It's only because
this is so frustrating!

I have moved a guy,
a vase, and a chair.

Why can't I just move a
stupid glass when I want to?

You found Winnick?

No.

The address
belonged to his mother.

And as far as she
knows, he's still in prison.

You sure she's not hiding him?

Did you see a big scratching
post, or a giant litter box?

Wait a minute,
where's Stephanie?

She didn't get back
from the house yet.

What? Why didn't you call me?

Where you going now?

Home!

Steph? Stephanie?

Oh, my God! Oh, my God. Steph.

I'm fine. My metabolism.
I'm a fast healer.

Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

Oh, God!

What happened?

Winnick.

He found me.

And I think I stained the floor.

Okay. Hang on, sweetheart.
I'm going to call 911.

No, baby, no.

What? No.

An ER doc will take my
blood, ask too many questions...

I don't care. You need...

This is my fault.

I did this.

Just be quiet, please.

I created him.

All right.

Daphne.

Where's Daphne? I'm
going to get you out of here.

Come on. Daphne!

Isn't this better
than social studies?

Best ditch day ever.

Thank you.

No, thank you.

I'm just the idea man. You're
the one that pulled it off.

Hey, look, I know this
sofa's really comfortable,

but wouldn't she be
better off in a hospital?

I have a very stubborn wife.

I just need time to let
my speed-healing work.

You know a great
place for that would be?

A hospital.

Look, Jim, find Daphne.

JJ.

Look, I don't know
where she is. I swear.

Yeah, but you can find out.

By hacking into her email,
her phone, whatever it takes.

Dad, if I do that, she'll
never speak to me again.

If she gets killed she'll never
speak to you again, either.

You make a good point.

I got it. It's a
text from Chris.

It says that they're on for
Sara B at Windward Hall.

Not again. What?

My dad's calling.

I'm gonna find some place that
sounds like the library to call him back.

Okay, good luck with that.

Daphne?

Daphne Powell?

My name is Lucas
Winnick. The school sent me.

Look, I can explain...

I'm sorry. I have
some difficult news.

Your mother's been attacked.

What?

Her condition's very serious.
She's at Saint Joseph's.

Oh, my God.

There's no reason to
get too alarmed just yet.

But obviously we wanted
to inform the family.

All right. Let me just go tell
my boyfriend what happened.

I'm sorry, we don't
have time for that.

If you could just come with
me, I could take you to her.

Sure.

I'm sorry. I didn't
know where to park.

I'm just around this corner.

What happened to
my mom, exactly?

It appears as though she
was attacked in your home.

Random, really.

Attacked?

Yeah, the police think it
was some kind of animal.

And I can assure you

it was not.

Daphne, get out
of here. Go home.

Dad!

Brave man. Deciding
to orphan his children.

Go home!

You know that stuff
they injected you with?

They say it brings out who
you really are at your core.

Well, you must have been
one animal when you were a kid.

Well, that's what
your mama says.

Speaking of family,

I think I still got a
little bit of your wife

left under my fingertips

if you want something
to remember her by.

Dad, stop!

Just call the police, okay?

His powers are going
to wear off, right?

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

I didn't know what
he might do to you.

What about Mom?

He said something about
her. Is she going to be okay?

Her fever's 106 and
her pulse is thready.

Mom?

What's going on?

Mom? Mom!

She looks worse.

Well, her body's
trying to heal itself,

but she seems to have
contracted some kind of infection.

All right, that's
it. Hospital. Now.

No, no, Jim.

They'll find out about us.

We'll be even more exposed.

Dad.

It looks like
Staphylococcus aureus.

It could kill her
if it's untreated.

We could try beta-lactam
antibacterials?

Cephalosporin?

Oxazolidone?

If we push the wrong one,
it could make her worse.

And I don't have time
to do the research.

I'm sorry, but this
is my call now.

And there is one doctor
we can take her to.

Someone you can trust?

Not exactly.

Oh, my God. What...

She was attacked.
One of your supers.

What are you talking about?

The man you had
Steph inject last week.

He did this. And
now she's dying.

Well, we have to
get her to a hospital.

They have the
proper equipment to...

You know that can't happen!

Why not? Stop! Enough!

No more games!

You know what we are. And
we know what you're doing.

So let's stop pretending and do

everything we
can to save her life!

Right now!

Okay.

Staphylococcus aureus.

It's aggressive.

The super who attacked her

must've been carrying some
kind of drug-resistant bacterium.

Then give her medicine.

The infection's too widespread.

What about your serum?
The Trilsetum formula.

Steph said it's like
some sort of miracle cure.

With extremely
unpredictable side effects.

I don't care!

If anything happens...

I can't let anything
happen to her.

Here, let me. She's my wife.

Nothing's happening.
It didn't work!

Jim, just wait.

But she's dying! She needs more!

Give her another shot! Please!

Be patient. Let the
Trilsetum do its job.

Jim?

Sweetheart.

What am I doing here?

Sweetheart. I'll explain later.

Just rest now, okay?

Rest.

Just rest, honey.

Okay.

How can I help you, Miss Powell?

JJ asked that I
give this to you.

The answer to the
equation you gave him.

Oh, God.

Thank God Powell delivered.

That bastard would have killed
me if I'd come back empty-handed.

Something else I
can help you with?

No. Thanks.

Hey, JJ, it's me.

Listen, something
weirder than usual

just happened
with Mr. Litchfield.

And I think that
we should talk, so

call me whenever
you get this. Bye.

Hey.

Hey!

How's your mom doing?

She came home last
night. She's gonna be okay.

Well, good. I'm glad.

I had a lot of fun
with you yesterday.

Me, too. I guess.

Chris, I really think that
we should just take a break

from this whole
mind-pushing thing...

Wait. Come on, Daphne. Relax.

Think about all the
cool stuff we could do.

I don't know, Chris.

Just wait until you see the
wish-list I've been working on, okay?

We're gonna have so much fun.

Sir, the CEO is here to see you.

I'm not really
prepared for that.

Get up, Dayton.

I know how you've missed me.

This is a welcome surprise. I
thought you were still abroad.

I can only be an
absentee landlord if

I trust my super,
and currently, I do not.

Well, our year-end fiscal
report has never been rosier.

I don't give a damn about that.

Why are the supers
running free around this city?

I'm very sorry. I take
full responsibility.

It's my fault.

I allowed you to operate with no

oversight when clearly
you need a firm hand.

Which is why, from now on,

I shall be directly
overseeing your every move.

So tell me,

any more surprises?

Well, there is one thing.

My research has
brought us closer to

solving the equation
for power permanence.

Once I've identified
the final variable,

I'll be able to make
the serum's effects last

without re-injections.

Dayton, had I not heard
this intriguing news,

this conversation would've
ended very differently for you.

Hey, I just came to
grab my mom's stuff.

Yeah.

Katie, are you all right?

Um...

I figured out why I have powers.

It's 'cause of Joshua.

I thought that when he left,
that I would just move on.

But I couldn't, I didn't.

It was like he'd left a
piece of himself with me.

But I dismissed that as
an emotional response,

not a physiological one.

So when I administered a
battery of tests to try and learn

why I was experiencing
these super-like symptoms,

I really did not expect
to receive these results.

Oh, my God, Katie.

You're pregnant.

Hey!

Where do you think you're going?

You shouldn't even
be on your feet.

No, I was just gonna
go for a quick run.

I've been cooped up
in this house all day.

I'm practically
bouncing off the walls.

Stephanie, you
were just injected.

This stuff could have side
effects we don't even know about.

I feel fine.

In fact, I feel better
than fine. I feel great.

I'll be back in a
minute. Literally.

I promise.

Honey.
