NightMan (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 5 - In the Still of the Night - full transcript

NARRATOR:
Johnny Domino was
one of San Francisco's

hottest young jazz musicians,

but fate and a cosmic event

were about to change
his life forever.

What the doctors told him
seemed impossible.

WALTON: John,
your brain has managed

to acquire the capacity

to pick up certain
frequencies like a radio.

But, Doc, I'm only
hearing bad stuff.

Yes, exactly.

You're tuned
to the frequency of evil.

Who sent you?

Hold it, now.
I'm on your side.

RALEIGH: A whole new line
of super tools

developed for super policemen.

A belt which enables him
to overcome gravity.

Fabrics which are
virtually bulletproof.

A stealth mode which
makes him seem to disappear.

A holographic display,

which makes him appear
to be where he ain't.

Sir, we placed
the pheromone detectors

all around
the perimeter of the park.

But we killed
the other one.

When it shows up, you'll have
your new toy to play with.

An extra-dimensional
life form

as intelligent as we are
is not a toy.

It is the scientific
discovery of a millennium.

And I'll be
the discoverer.

Prepare the van.
Tonight, we catch
the beast.

MAN: You know
you want this
as much as I do.

Mm-mmm. Sammy,
come on, please
don't do that.

GIRL: Sammy, come on,
you're spoiling everything.

Don't.

Sammy!

Stop it!

You didn't have
to do that.

Sammy, stop it!

You're always
playing games.

No, Sammy, Sammy,
something's here.

Come on,
let's get out of here.
Would you just relax, okay?

Station, this is code 12.

Hello, you called?

Yeah, a cop called in
a code 12 at the park,

said something weird
was going on.

I knew you were
headed that way
to pick up Andrea, so...

What, you decided
to make me late again?

I'll cruise by.

This better be good.

We got him.

Park entrance.

I won't hurt you.
No. Please...

Hold it right there!

Stay where you are!

Please let me go.

You'll be safe now.

The one who did it,
just got away.

You saw the beast?

Yeah, huge thing with
a big red eye and cape.

A cape?

Excuse me.

Officer... Mullins.

You found the body.
What else did you see?

I'm not supposed
to discuss it.

JOHNNY: This girl
needs a doctor. Now.

Put her on the gurney.

It was...
Well, it was tall.

Over six feet, and
had a patch or a...

I don't know,
it was foggy.

You're doing fine.

What else
can you tell us?

Charlie?

Don't make a long day
any longer, Frank.

Hey, Charlie, now
you know I can't let
this one slide.

Keep what's left of your
dignity and walk away.
Can you do that?

No, I can't.
Not from this one.

Now, with or without
a badge, Charlie,

you're stuck
with me on this.

And you know why.

I wish I could get you
to take up shuffleboard.

It had a cape.
A cape?

And one of its eyes
was sort of glowing red

and it looked
right through me.

Thank you
very much, officer.

That'll be all.

I think you know
the rules.

Everyone behind
the lines.

The citizens of this city

have a right to know
what's going on.

An attack took place.

A death occurred.

The attacker got away.

Paris.

Would you please mind

escorting this lady
behind the tape, please?

Behind the tape, please.

Did you get it?

Hey, take a look at this.

I'll take that, miss.

Let's go.

It's kinda strange that
a civilian research group
like the Beckford Foundation

seems to be
on equal footing with
the police department.

Don't you think, Jake?

Jake?

Jake?

I found this over there.

It looks like it's
most likely from
one of our victims.

But I want
that cloth analyzed.

I've never seen
anything like it before.

There's no
sign of her.

The girl
just disappeared.

Clock is ticking
on our project,
gentlemen.

Find her.

And find the beast.

Yeah?

RALEIGH: Raleigh.

So what happened?

You look terrible.

JOHNNY:
Wait till you see the suit.

No.

No, not my suit.

My beautiful suit!

How could anything slice
through Armadrillion?

The cabling
to the eyepiece
was severed.

RALEIGH: Holy...

It is cut
clean through, man.

Yeah.
Are you all right?

Yeah.

You saw it?

I saw it.
You know what it is?

I don't know
what it is.

Yeah, well,
whatever it is,

maybe on the memory
of the scanner.

I'll fix the cable.

We may have something
in the memory.

The camera on the belt
is pretty sturdy.

Not so sure I wanna
see that thing again.

Shortly after midnight,

one the city's worst
murders took place

only a few feet from
where I'm standing.

Police officials have
deferred all inquiries
to the Beckford Foundation

who have been asked
to serve as consultants
in this investigation

due to their startling claim
the death of Sammy Farnsworth

may have been caused
by an escaped research animal.

However, one witness
described the attacker
as a man

standing nearly
seven feet tall,

possibly wearing a cape,

and some sort of mask.

Was this a vicious attack
by a crazed animal,

or by man dressed to kill?

This is Elaine Barnes,
Channel 6.

That, we didn't need.

We don't need
this either.

What was that?

See?

It isn't a human.

RALEIGH: It isn't
an animal either.

JOHNNY: It felt like
something in between.

I kept getting
conflicting emotions.

Like raw evil
with a desperate need.

Yeah, like for
a nice tall meal?

No. No, it didn't
want me.

But it wanted something.

And it's not gonna
stop until it finds it.

You ever heard
of knocking?

You let him have
the body again,
didn't you?

And all the evidence
in one little package.

Not now, Frank.

You can't keep this
covered up forever.

Charlie, how many people
have to die here?

Have you forgotten
David Kelshaw?

That was a long
time ago, Frank.

There's nothing
I can do about it.

I can't bring back
the dead.
What about this girl?

You just gonna let her
die like the others?

That's way
out of line, Frank.

Does she have any idea
what's gonna happen
to her next?

Has anybody told her
what kinda pain
she's gonna endure

on her way
to her last breath
in three days?

Look, I don't like it
any better than you do,
but I got an order,

Do you hear me?
An order.

Let the Beckford boys
handle this.

Oh, the Beckford boys.

I see.

Well, it's starting
all over again,
isn't it, Charlie?

First, it was the army.

Now, it's
the Beckford Foundation.

Well, the names have changed,
but the powerful people
behind them haven't.

Charlie, can't you see
what's happening here?

The military would never
turn research this secret
over to a civilian group.

The Beckford Foundation
is a cover.

It's a way to move
cost from the public
defense budget

to the secret intelligence
budget, can't you see that?

You're probably right, Frank,
but what am I gonna do?

I got more to lose
than you do.

Well, that's
too bad, Charlie.

Then the whole thing's
gonna end up
the same way, huh?

Only this time,

maybe there'll be more
than one of those things
on the loose.

And maybe this time...

they won't be able
to stop 'em.

You think
about that, Charlie.

Yeah?

FRANK: Tell me
about it, Johnny.

Tell you about what, Dad?

The park, you were there.
Tell me about it.

How did you know that?

Son, it's all
over the scanner.

You found some
girl in the park,

and you took her
to County General.

Johnny, did you come
in contact with her?

Of course,
I carried her in.

Did you touch any
of her slash wounds?

How did you know
about the slash wounds?

The MO is exactly the same
as a series of attacks that

Charlie Dann and I
investigated in this city
eight years ago.

Some kid named David Kelshaw
was mauled by some animal
in that same park.

What happened?

He died.

Sad thing was,
he didn't know--
none of us knew

that he was hurt that bad.

What did the autopsy say?

Never saw one.

The department shut
the investigation down.

Or I should say they decided
to let the army take over
the investigation

due to some sensitive issues
of national security

or some such BS.

Johnny...

You gotta
promise me something.

You won't get anymore
involved in this thing

than what happened
last night.

Dad...
Yeah, Dad,
I promise.

I am involved.

You saw a man
with a cape?

Uh-huh.
Pen, pen, pen.

Did you get
a good look
at him?

Uh-huh.

He was wearing
a red thong bikini?

Right.

Damn it! Ugh!

I'm getting nowhere
on this thing.

Oh, Robin.

Where's that number
of the guy who brought
the girl to the hospital?

Farley said he's
some kind of musician.

Oh.

Who are you?

Some kinda musician.

Johnny Domino?

Sit down
in this chair
and talk to me.

I have been hearing
all about your heroics.

Just so I don't misquote.

I just got off work...

and I took a ride
with my mountain bike
around the park.

I have this thing
with insomnia.

The girl, John.
We'll slip into
your bio later.

What about the girl?

I heard her scream.

Found her, took her
to the hospital.

Average, huh?

Oh, and I didn't
see a guy with a cape

or a glowing red eye.

I saw your spot
on the news.

What were you wearing?

Beg your pardon?

In the park,
what were you wearing?

Okay, fine.
Never mind.

You obviously came here
to make a point. Go.

I've been listening
to the calls you've
been getting.

I think that you're
on the wrong track.

Ah!

And you're here
to set me straight.

Where were you
eight years ago?

In a training bra.

My dad was a cop.

And he told me a story
you might like to hear.

ELAINE: "July 1, 1990."

My God! There it is,
on the front page.

"Fort Pershing guard
saves fourth victim

from serious injury during
heroic capture of an escaped
research animal."

"Army medics dismissed
various reports

of alluding sightings
of a mysterious beast."

"Head of research project
Dr. Louis Borloff

cannot be reached
for comment

but Dr. Gerard Parker--"

Parker?

He was the one
I talked to
in the park.

That means the projects
have got to be related.

"Parker led the team
to recapture the animal."

"...three days later
from a superficial wound."

MAN: Sir?

We have the analysis
of the material found
in the park.

It shouldn't have
been there, sir.

We cross-referenced with
the DOD and found it was
from a killed project.

Who brought it
into the park?

We're still running
the DNA test.

So far, we've eliminated
the dead boy.

But we're checking
the blood of a
young woman

who was admitted
into County General
last night

with slash wounds.

You've kept her
away from the press?
Yes, sir.

Besides, she's unconscious.

Yes, well when the end comes
it won't be pretty.
See that she is isolated.

Oh, and Gonzalez.

The clock is ticking
on the end of our project.

Find the beast.

Okay, Johnny, now
what's this all about?

I didn't level with you
the first time you called.

What are you
talking about?

I got pretty close
to the thing that
attacked the girl.

Oh, Johnny...
We gotta talk
to this guy Borloff.

How do you know
about Borloff?

Dad, saving
this girl's life,

depends on us
getting his help.

What's your relationship
with him?

To tell you the truth,

Johnny, I wasn't
his favorite person.

Maybe better let me
do the talking.

Yes?

We wanna talk to you
about what happened
in the park last night.

Go away.

He's still
a sweetheart.

Here, let me give it a try.
He may remember me.

Want to chat
for old times sake.

Dr. Borloff?

BORLOFF: Go away.

Huh, see, he's
warming up.

Nostalgia gets me
every time.

Dr. Borloff.

Uh, this is
Officer Dominus.

You may remember me
from Fort Pershing,

eight years ago.

I had nothing to say then,
I have nothing to say now.

Yeah, well, I'm
the one that found
David Kelshaw in the park.

Now we have
one boy dead,

and a girl who's gonna
die in a few days
if you don't help us.

Doctor, do you want
more blood on your hands?

I remember you.

Come in.

What is it that you want?

FRANK: We wanna know
what's out there
killing people.

Why should I know?

Because the same thing
happened eight years ago.

You were a
civilian employee,
working for the army

doing secret research.

What kind of medical
experiments were you
doing, doctor?

I'm a physicist.

I don't do
medical experimentation.

Did you ever see
any of the victims?

David Kelshaw,
or any of the others?

No.
No.

Yes.

That is, I think
I remember reading
something about them.

What do you know
about the recent attack?

It's none of
my business anymore

so I'm no
longer interested.

So I'm no longer interested.

FRANK: Yeah, well
I'm interested.

I remember it like
it was yesterday.

I remember the way
David looked
when I found him.

He had nothing but
scratches on his arm.

You know what
he looked like
72 hours later?

He didn't even look
human, doctor.

One big viral infection
covered his entire body.

Tell us
about the animal.

Look, I can't relive
ugly memories anymore.

Not even to
save a life?

Please!

Come on, Johnny.

It's true
what people say.

It's a zoo out there.

JOHNNY: Come on.

FRANK: What the hell
was that all about?

You got one of those
flashes, didn't you?

I could tell by
the look on your face.

Any of those old attacks
ever happen at the zoo?

Yeah, why?

Our friend's going
hunting tonight.

Dan here.

Hey, Charlie, it's Frank.
I'm at the zoo.

What're you doing
at the zoo at night?

Even the animals asleep.

I'm doing what you
should be doing.

BORLOFF: Sunday the 11th.

10:30 p.m.

The pheromone detectors
I placed around the perimeter

have been tripped
at several locations.

The discrepancy in
the concentration
between the pheromones

of this creature
and the first

confirms my worst fears.

This one's male.

Charlie...

There's something
else here, too.

Frank, get out of there now!
That's an order!

You can't give me orders.

Charlie, you get
down here... now.

Where's that smell?

It smells like
something died.

One hundred yards
and closing faster.

I'll have one chance
to bring him down.

What the hell happened?

Where did it go?

No!

I gotta get you
to the hospital.

First, I need
some answers.

What was that thing?

A grave mistake.

But who are you?
What are you?

How did you come down
out of the sky?

Your secrets first.

Well now,
it doesn't matter.

Without an antiviral
vaccine, I'll be dead
within 72 hours.

Is there one?

There was.

But it was destroyed
right after the first beast
was destroyed.

Can we get some more?

We'll need blood
from the new beast.

This isn't the same one
that appeared
eight years ago?

No. That one was female.

Which can only mean
they probably started
the project up again.

And it's too late to stop
them from letting more
of them come through.

Come through what?

A gate.

A gate the army's
opened between dimensions.

Hey!

Step aside, Doc, give me
a clear shot at him!

No! No, you mustn't.

Go on back where I can
take him off from here!

Get back, you
might get hit.

I am probably
dead already.
Get back!

I can't see.

I can't see.

I had him, Charlie.
I had him dead.

Yeah, we don't get him
dead or alive right now.

So you saw him?

Oh, I saw him, it,
whatever it was.

He's a freaky thing
with a big red eye and...

I've never seen anything
like it before.

Where did he go?

He went into the woods.

Look,
we'll find it, don't worry
about it. We'll find it.

We'll take him.

Not this time,
you don't.

Excuse me, Lieutenant?

What exactly didn't
you understand?

I got a guy who looks
like swiss cheese,

a bunch of dead
animal carcasses...

and a really big gun
that says

I'm keeping this guy
and what's happened
to him as evidence

for what you guys
have been up to.

Take him
to the hospital.

You got a problem
with that?

This is gonna cost
your badge, Lieutenant.

Fly it with somebody
who cares.

Take him to the hospital.
You're gonna be okay.

Proud of you, Charlie.

Yeah, right.

You just want another cop
out of work so you can have
somebody to hang around with.

So, what exactly
did you see?

Charlie, you're not
gonna believe this.

The first one ran faster
than a damn cheetah.

And the second one,
I swear, flew out of here
like a big bird.

Flew out of here?
Yeah.

Now you're telling me
that there were two of 'em?

Yeah.
Come on, Frank,

I don't wanna
hear this.

But I do.

I'd be interested
in both of them.

What?
You're Frank Dominus,
aren't you?

I forget. Hey, catch up
with you later, okay?

Mr. Dominus, there was
a struggle here tonight

and some people
got hurt, again.

One of them, I believe,
for the second time.

Second time?

Well, whoever
belongs to this unusual
piece of fabric,

was in the park
last night
and again tonight.

And he, or she... It,

took a beating
and got cut up.

From what I can tell
from the girl
in the hospital,

two encounters with
the beast will translate
to one very sick puppy.

Any idea who
the condemned party
might be?

You know, I've had
a really bad night.

And I haven't got a clue
as to what you're talking
about, honey, but...

I can tell you this.

They're looking for
one beast and I think
that's plenty.

Don't you think so?

Excuse me.

Hey, you just get here?

Yeah.
That reporter's here.

You all right?

I'm fine, just fine.

Slow news night.

Actually, it was
pretty busy.

So, do you do
another set?

Three's enough
for one night.

Guess that means,
I'm batting zero.

I don't get my man
at the zoo,

and that theory of mine
got blown out of the water.

What theory is that?

That you might know more
about what you're saying

about the man who was
running around the zoo
in a cape and wet suit.

Why would I know
something about it?

Well, for one thing,

you mentioned your father
worked on the case
eight years ago, right?

Well, I ran his name
and found out
about a dismissal.

You know, cops aren't
immune to doing odd things

to get back
into the limelight.

So, you thought
it might be my father
in that cape.

Or you.

Trying to do things
on his behalf.

Then, there was your
finding the girl, getting
her out to the hospital

without anybody else
in the park seeing you.

And if you were biking...

What did you get her
in the hospital in?

Maybe I used my cape,

and flew.

Okay, all right.

Maybe it was
a little far-fetched.

But you know
a dream story,
you have to admit.

Right up until the time
your father showed up
in the park

in his civvies, and
you were right here.

Wha...
What is it?

That night in the park...

What?

That thing took
a swipe at me.

Oh, my God.

It's... spreading.

And you didn't tell anyone?

Why?

Oh, another
stupid guy thing.

You gotta get
to a hospital.

They can't do anything.
No, I don't mean
the public hospital,

the hospital
where they sent Borloff to.

My dad said
the police sent Borloff
to Country General.

No, the ambulance
was redirected
to Fort Pershing.

That means the only man
who can stop this is
in their control.

Maybe if you'll go
on the airways,

get this thing out
into the open...

They'll never
let it happen.

What...
Where are you going?

To visit a sick friend.

JOHNNY:
Excuse me, nurse. Hi.

Mr. Domino. Hi.

How's Gloria doing?

I'm sorry, Mr. Domino,
I'm not permitted to--

Did I hear the nurse
say Mr. Domino?

Are you the man
who brought
my little girl in?

Yes.

They wouldn't let me
or my husband see her today.

We could see her as much
as we wanted to yesterday.

Then the new doctor
showed up.

They won't let
her own mother in.

Do you think
there's something
they aren't telling us?

She is going to
be all right, isn't she?

I'm sure everyone's
doing everything
they can.

She isn't going
to die, is she?

I can't
let that happen.

She's all we have
in this world.

You just couldn't leave
well enough alone,
could you?

Well...

You're going to make
one more contribution
to our project.

You're gonna help us
capture the beast
once and for all.

I'll never help you.

You've brought this
on yourself.

The gate should never
have been reopened.

That may be.

But the fact remains.

It isn't after me.

It's after you.

And you're going
to be our bait.

JOHNNY: Raleigh.

Hey, man, where
the hell have you been?

I'm listening.

You're kidding.

You're not kidding.

MAN: Sir.

We've placed the pheromone
detectors all around
the perimeter of the base.

If that thing comes
anywhere near this place,

we'll know about it.

We just had a possible
sighting on the east side
of the base.

But it's disappeared.

Something that size

Doesn't matter.

We know where
it's going.

Oh.

It's you again.

I'm gonna get you
out of here.

BORLOFF: No, leave me.

You'll die here.

It will find me
one way or another.

It's searching for you?

I killed
the first creature.

I was trying to draw blood
to make a vaccine
for the virus.

The drugs we gave it
made it go berserk.

You ordered it shot?

Only with
tranquilizer darts.

But there were
too many men,

too many darts.

I wish to die.

It was an accident.

Yes.

But it let out a shriek
that could be
heard in hell.

Probably was.

That's why
the other one came.

When they reopened the gate,
a male came looking
for the female.

It was its mate.

You're very perceptive.

Parker carried out
the order.

Tell me about
the vaccine.

You need the antibodies
in its blood.

What about the gate
the creature came through?

It's in a secret
underground bunker

below the main building.

If I got you there,

will the creature follow?

Yes.

We could send it home.

What the hell?

He didn't get out
of here by himself.

Well, don't just
stand there.

Have them seal
all the exits.

Check every vehicle.

Security, come in.

You know, the last thing
he said to me was

that we should send
the creature back.

The gate.
Come on,
let's go!

Let's go!

I'll enter the startup codes.

I must caution you,

that when the sequence
is completed,

and I trip the veil control
to open the gate,

the beast will know it,

and he will come.

That's what
I'm afraid of.

Yes, well,
however dangerous,

getting the blood
from the creature is
the only chance we have

of saving your friend,
Mr. Domino,

as well as
the young woman.

That's the last
of the codes.

Now, for the
veil control...

PARKER: I wouldn't
do that if I were you.

Shame, shame.

Is someone trying
to steal my pride
and joy?

My immortality.

Let it go back, Parker.

It doesn't belong here.

What have we here?

You must be the thorn
in my side.

I've been
looking forward
to meeting you.

Your tranquilizer gun
doesn't scare me.

Really, well how
about this one?

Fifteen rounds of hollow point,
does that frighten you?

BORLOFF: Power has a way
of deranging people.

You wanna know
what power is?

Power is an illusion.
It comes and it goes.

But science...

the expansion of the mind,
of human potential,

that's lasting.

O Captain! My Captain!

Your mistake was not
realizing the full potential

of your discovery.

But I will.

BORLOFF: Even if it means
discovery is destruction?

You were always
so melodramatic.

PARKER:
Well now, it's time
to say goodbye, doctor.

No more meddling.

Is that all you've got,
tough guy?

BORLOFF: He's here.

I see him.

It was Borloff!

I wasn't even there!

Give me the syringe.
RALEIGH: No, you can't
stick that in him.

He is a wild animal.
BORLOFF: He'll kill you.

You know Borloff
didn't kill your mate.

Get away from him. He thinks
you're trying to stop him
from going home.

Just like I know
you didn't mean to
harm that girl in the park.

Because of you,
the girl will die.

There's something
in your
blood that kills us.

We need your blood...

I told you
it's no use.

Now, stay away from him
or he's gonna kill you!

If he wanted to kill me,
I'd be dead.

He took the syringe.

BORLOFF: No, you
mustn't follow him
into the Vortex.

He's gone.

We're doomed.

He's gone.

But he gave us
what we needed.

Oh, he's looking good,
sounding good.

Apparently,
no side effects.

How about you?

I'm fine.
Grateful to be alive.

I do keep on having
one really strange
nightmare, though.

About what?

Well, this angel,
it's carrying me
high above the city,

and I feel totally calm
and peaceful, but then,

when I look at its face,
it's got this enormous
red, glowing eye.

JOHNNY: You had that
dream too? I thought
I was the only one.

Fascinating.

Both of you having
the same nightmare.

Not anymore.
I got rid of mine.

How

No.

I stopped eating
pepperoni pizza
after midnight.

Enjoying yourself?
Yeah, I'm having a great time.

I wanna thank you again
for everything, Mr. Domino.

Johnny. Don't thank me.

Thank the doctor who
found the antidote
to the virus.

Borloff, who isn't
returning any of
my phone calls.

In fact no one is.

I have the story
of my career and no one
wants to talk about it.

I guess we'll
never know.

Are you sure you don't
know anything about the large
circular metal pieces

the military took from
Fort Pershing's main building?

None. Sorry.

But, stay
and enjoy yourselves.

Drinks are on the house.

So, about this angel...

Did this thing have
a red eye sort of in the
middle of its forehead?

Like a flying cyclops?

What a shock.
More fog.

So is Barnes still
trying to pump you
for information?

Yep.

If she only knew
the half of it, huh?

Like...
like that point
the other night.

when the beast seemed
to be on the same
wavelength as you.

I don't suppose that thing
you did works from
one dimension to the next.

No, come on.

That would be
unbelievable.

It was Borloff!

What?
