NightMan (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 21 - Double Vision - full transcript

[THEME MUSIC PLAYING]

[SAXOPHONE MUSIC PLAYING]

I am telling you
that Jessica put me
in charge of the club

before she left
for Hawaii.

[SIGHS]

No way.

She always puts me in charge
when she goes on vacation.

MAN: All units converge
on Sector Three.

I repeat.
All units move
to Sector Three.

[THRILLING INSTRUMENTAL
MUSIC PLAYING]

They can run,
but they can'’t hide.

[GRUNTS]

RALEIGH: Did she specifically
ask you to this time?

She doesn'’t have to.

See, we'’re so close
that it'’s just...

understood.

[DEVICE CHIRPING]MAN: Turn here.

[TIRES SCREECHING]

[GRUNTS]

JOHNNY: Wait!
You'’re hurt!

Yeah, he'’s gotta be.

Call 911.

RALEIGH:
All right.

MAN:
Turn right here.

[LAUGHS] He'’s gonna
run right into us.

Hey, Al.

It'’s Dr. Bauman.

[GUNSHOT]

[THUD]

Oh, I'’m sorry, Al,
but you were a bad boy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa.

Who are you?

He ran in front
of my car.

I hit him. Is he...

He'’s just unconscious.
He'’s gonna be fine.

I'’m a doctor.
We need to get him
to a hospital.

No, don'’t move him.

He might have
internal injuries.

[SIRENS WAILING IN DISTANCE]

We'’ve already
called 911.

That'’s probably
the ambulance,

or the police.

Yeah, you'’re right.

He'’s gonna
be fine though.

He'’s gonna
be fine.

[SIRENS GROWING LOUDER]

[CAR DOORS SHUTTING]

COP: All right,
what happened here?
What happened?

He ran out in
front of my car.

I'’m not getting
a pulse.

Okay, all right.
The ambulance is
on its way.

Let me try.

Hey, I know this kid.

This is Al Newman.

Fairmont University'’s
star quarterback.

Sir...

you just mowed down
a Heisman Trophy candidate.

We'’re all very upset about
this tragedy, Dr. Hatcher.

But we have to carry on
with our research.

Our work... The most
important thing here.

I'’m sure you're right.

It just feels so empty
right now.

Tell me everything you
remember about the events

leading up to
Alpha'’s termination.

Do you have to
call him that?

It just sounds
so clinical.

He was
absolutely clinical.

This is the "Alpha
New Man" project.

Calling him
"Al Newman" didn'’t
change what he was.

Now, I put you
in charge.

How do you think
he got off campus

without triggering any
of the sensory systems?

Well, three people
left campus.

I managed to get
two of them back.

It had to have been
a security equipment problem.

Yes, I had Wells
check that.

All systems are
fully operational.

Now.

But that doesn'’t preclude
an intermittent problem,
does it?

No.

You did
a wonderful job

getting those others
back to campus.

Yes, our secrets
are still safe.

Now, if you'’ll
excuse me.

Wells...

I, uh...

I think we better
keep a closer eye
on Dr. Hatcher.

She'’s getting just
a little too emotional.

FRANK: Talking about
your cheap shots...

They make it sound
more like murder
than an accident.

RALEIGH: It wasn'’t
even Johnny'’s fault.

FRANK: What the hell
has happened
to journalists?

Tabloids happened.

"If it bleeds,
it leads," happened.

Just don'’t let 'em
get to you, son.

They'’re just doing
their job.

It'’s pretty hard
to sugarcoat killing
a 20-year-old kid.

If I had
just seen him...

Johnny, don'’t do
this to yourself, son.

He'’s right, man.
That guy stepped out
right in front of us.

Absolutely.

[CELL PHONE BEEPING]

Hey, guys.

Lousy picture.

Just came by to see
how you were doing.

Okay, I guess.

This kind of thing'’s tough.
It plays with your head.

We got a shrink
at the department

that can help
you out if you wanna
go down that road.

That'’s a little drastic
at this point, Charlie.

Fine. Your call.

Look, I read
the accident report.

What about the two guys
who left the scene?

What about '’em?

Well, sometimes after
the shock wears off,

you remember things.

Anything else
you can tell me?

The car they were driving.

Yeah.

You described it as
a late model black sedan.

You got anymore?

License plate.

The letter'’s read...

Jaz. J-A-Z.

Good. That'’ll help
narrow it down.

They haven'’t determined
cause of death yet.

The autopsy'’s this afternoon.

Tell you what.

Why don'’t you tag along
with me and see what else
we can dig up?

Yeah. Okay.

We'’ll both go.Frank!

Thought you had that
security job you were
flying to Seattle for?

I'’ll cancel it.

I thought you said
this was your biggest
paycheck to date?

Raleigh, that'’s
just money.

This is family.

Dad, I know you'’d do
anything for me.

But I want you to go.

Listen...No, I will be okay.

I promise.

Four times three
is twelve.

Four times four
is sixteen.

Four times five
is twenty.

Four times six
is twenty-four.

I miss Al.

So do I.

When'’s he
coming back?

Oh, Yvette...

Honey, we'’ve talked
about this, remember?

He'’s not
coming back.

He'’s in heaven,
like my goldfish, Chloe.

Yes.

LESLIE: Actually, Lieutenant,
I'’m not a medical doctor.

I have a PhD
in microbiology.

You knew the deceased
from your work
at the university?

Yes. Al Newman was
one of my favorite students.

His parents
asked me to make
the arrangements.

Thanks.

Hey, Doc.Hey, Dann.
How'’s it going?

Good.

[TIRES SCREECHING]

Johnny?

What'’s
the matter?

Nothing.

My God!
He'’s gone!

He'’s gotta be in
one of the other bins.

I just checked
on him this morning.

Al Newman is gone.

"Gone"?

As in just got up
and walked away, huh?

Yes, Lieutenant.

[SIGHS] Great.

Now we gotta find
a missing corpse,

or a walking dead man.

I think I just
saw him, Charlie.

Where?Out there.

This thing is getting
to you, isn'’t it?

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

LESLIE: What happened
to Al'’s body?

We stole it.

Leslie, we can'’t let
the petty ordinances

of city bureaucrats
interfere with our work,
can we?

What if some bumbling
medical examiner

just happened to
stumble on our project?

So you took the body
only to keep our work secret?

Of course.
Why not?

Maybe so that they
couldn'’t establish
the real cause of death.

[CHUCKLES]
You know, Leslie,

you have a sinister mind.

Actually, it'’s rather Gothic,
don'’t you think, Wells?

Very Gothic.

The local villagers
and they'’ve got torches

and pitchforks.

You know, if I didn'’t
know better, Wells,

I'’d say that Leslie here
is capable of leading them
right up to the castle.

[SAXOPHONE MUSIC PLAYING]

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

Thank you.

Thank you
very much.

MAN 1: Hey, Domino,
run over any kids lately?

[PEOPLE EXCLAIMING]

MAN 2:
Hey, get off his back!

I'’ll be back after
a short break.

[SIGHS]

You'’re the one.

You killed
my brother!

You killed
my brother.

[STRAINING]

Give me my brother.

[SOBBING]
I have nobody...

Please.

Please.

Please... [SOBBING]

At first I thought
I saw a ghost.

The resemblance
is amazing.

Identical twins?Yeah.

How can a football star
like Al Newman
have a twin brother

and nobody knows
about it?

You'’ll see.

[IMITATING CAR ZOOMING]

Hi.

RALEIGH: Hi.

What'’s your name?

I'’m Raleigh.

You wanna play
with my truck?

Uh, maybe later, Adam.

I see why they kept
Adam'’s existence a secret.

Shades Of Mice and Men.

You'’d think people
would be a little more
enlightened these days.

This explains why I saw
a dead man walk
out of the morgue.

[ADAM EXCLAIMING IN PAIN]

[WHIMPERING]
Oh, God!

I gotta go home.

Where is
home, Adam?

I gotta go now.

Maybe we can give
you a ride, Adam.

I gotta hurry!

[THRILLING MUSIC PLAYING]

God, look
at him move.

JOHNNY: You think he might
lead us to the people
who stole his brother'’s body?

RALEIGH: I think
it'’s worth a shot. We'’ll never catch him on foot.

You take the Prowler,
I'’ll...Yeah.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING]

You up there, J?

I got you,
you'’re heading
east on 6th.

Look at this guy go.

Hey, did you get
the speedometer
checked lately?

No, why?

It says here that Adam is
running 40 miles per hour.

So it'’s impossible
for a human being

to run 40 miles
an hour, Johnny.

Most people would say
it'’s impossible for
a human to fly, too.

Uh-oh.

I think he spotted me.

Whoa.

Just what I was afraid of.
He went cross country.

That'’s okay.
I still got him.

I'’ll keep you posted.

[EXCLAIMS]

Where you
been, Adam?

Nowhere.

How'’d you get past
the electronic sensory
system, Adam?

I don'’t remember.

I got a little something
that might help you remember.

Is there
a problem, officers?

Yeah. This ain'’t Halloween.

And you'’re trespassing.

Arrest him.

[GRUNTS]

[GRUNTING]

I'’ll help you, Spiderman.

LESLIE: Adam!

WELLS: Maybe this
will slow you down.

[GUNSHOTS][GRUNTING]

Is that your best shot?

[YELLING]

[GRUNTS]

[THUD]

Goodbye,
Spiderman.

[BELT CHIRPING]

CHARLIE: Well, your car
was ID'’d at the scene.

The victim'’s
a student here.

It'’s kind of like
two plus two.

So here we are.

That'’s a first rate
piece of deduction.

And you'’re correct.

I was one
of the two men
in that alley.

You got a name
on the other guy?

Officer James Wilson.

He'’s on vacation
this week,

but I can put you
in touch with him
when he gets back.

I'’d appreciate it.

Al Newman was a fairly
well known athlete
at this university.

So you didn'’t
recognize him?

No. I'’m not much of
a football fan. You?

You left the scene
before the police arrived
the other day.

Why?Well, we knew that
they were almost there,

and well, we weren'’t
feeling too welcome.

This Johnny Domino

was acting
pretty belligerent.

Oh, really?Mm-hmm.

How'’s that?

Storming around.
Yelling how it
wasn'’t his fault

that this jerk ran
right in front of him

and deserved
what he got.

Between you and me,

I think Domino
had a few
too many cocktails.

But, hey,
who am I
to judge?

Thanks for your help.

That is the second time
Adam Newman has
left this campus

without permission.

You know, fool me once,
shame on you.

Fool me twice,
shame on me.

We were just,
just able

to re-establish
control remotely.

Look, there was
no real harm done.

He just went to see
Johnny Domino.

Look, I'’ve invited him
here this morning.

I'’ll smooth everything over.

But you are
missing my point.

The essence of this project

is about control.

And if we can'’t maintain
control over our subjects,

I'’ll have to terminate
these experiments.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

[MOUTHING]

Oh, sorry. I was looking
for Dr. Hatcher.

She'’ll be back.
You can come in.

Okay. Thanks.

I saw you on TV!

The commercial for
the House of Soul.

[CHUCKLES] Yeah.

You play music on...

Saxophone.

Yeah.

I really like
your music.

You should come down
to the club sometime.

When?

Whenever you like.

What are you reading?

It'’s about a horse
that goes over a rainbow.

And, um, there'’s
a bunch of colors in it.

LESLIE: Hi.

Sorry I'’m late.

I just got here myself.

Well, I see you'’ve
met Yvette.

Sort of.
I'’m Johnny.

I know.

Why don'’t you take
a little break, honey,
so we can talk?

Okay.

It'’s nice to
meet you, Johnny.

Same here.

Now, Mr. Domino...

You wanna know why
we have Adam Newman here,

and why he'’s such
a big secret.

I think I know about
the second part.

You know about
his problem?

Then let'’s talk about
our work with Adam.

We'’re part of
the human genome project.

What we do here
is map and describe

the function of the thousands
of genes that make
each of us who we are.

The DNA code.

I'’ve heard of it, yeah.

Well, identical twins are
like gold in that research.

Especially when there are
some radical diversions
between them.

Like the mental differences
between Al and Adam?

Exactly.

Come on. I'’ll show you
one of our labs.

Okay.

[GROANS]

Johnny. Johnny,
Johnny, Johnny.

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny!

[LAUGHS] Hey, Yvette.

How about now?

How about now what?

You said I could go to
the House of Soul anytime.

How about now?

Sure. If you like.

I'’ll even
buy you lunch.

What'’s the matter?

I can'’t leave.

Did you change your mind?

No, I just don'’t
leave here.

Oh. You need to get
permission first?

No, I already
got permission.

YVETTE:
Is that your car?

Yeah.

I like purple.

Okay, I'’ll go.

Okay.

[PHONE RINGING]

Dr. Hatcher.

Which one left?

All right.
I'’ll handle it.
Thanks.

JOHNNY: And this is
the backstage area.

Dressing rooms...

Basically where the musicians
get dressed, hang out.

You know...

You okay?
Do you have a headache?

I have some aspirin
in my dressing room.

[GRUNTS IN PAIN]

Johnny.

[DEVICE BEEPING]

She'’ll be okay
in a few minutes.

It'’s all right.

It'’s okay.

It'’ll be okay.

It'’s all right.

What happened to her?

Yvette has a cranial implant
designed to
keep her on campus.

You never mentioned
holding people hostage

as part of your work.

I didn'’t tell you
the whole truth
earlier today.

I didn'’t feel I could.

I have one of those
government
security contracts.

The penalties for violating
them are pretty stiff.

After all that'’s happened,

I know that I'’m not the one
that should be threatened
with prison.

What'’s really
going on, Doctor?

In a word... Cloning.

And not sheep or cattle.

Humans.

This is going on
at the university?

Yes. Bauman is
a brilliant scientist.

He brings in grants
worth millions,

so the trustees
leave him alone.

How does this project
affect Yvette?

LESLIE: She'’s one
of our subjects.

Just like Al
and Adam Newman.

Who aren'’t really twins.

No.

Adam is a clone
of Bauman.

Just like Al.

The reason he
seems so slow

is because of accelerated
growth hormones,

which enable Bauman
to age a human fully
in a matter of months.

Unfortunately, mental maturity
can'’t quite keep up.

And how do you
fit in, Doctor?

I came to the project
last summer

thinking that I was
the luckiest genetic
researcher in the world.

We were gonna find cures
for every illness

the human body
ever suffered.

Then I met
Al and Adam Newman.

And I realized
what a fool I was.

Why?

'’Cause they might
as well have been rats.

They were treated like
laboratory animals,

not people.

That'’s why I circumvented
the security system

and took them off campus.

Unfortunately,
Al overreacted
and ran away.

And ended up dead.

Tell me about
the security system.

It'’s a more
sophisticated version

of the invisible electronic
fence people use
for their dogs.

There'’s a station
on every campus,

and if the subject
goes beyond that,

they get an intense headache

which grows worse
with time or distance.

Which made
Yvette collapse.

Yeah.

She endured pain from hell
to be with you today.

That'’s nothing compared
to what Bauman will do

if he finds out
she left campus again.

I don'’t think
she should go back.

Well, what do you suggest?

Quite a story, Doc.

Mr. Domino thought
you'’d be interested.

Well, at least I know he'’s
not going off the deep end.

I mean, that'’s good.

But to be honest with you,
I'’m not sure

there'’s anything you've
told me that'’s illegal
under current statutes.

Except for the theft
of Al Newman'’s body.

You have any idea
where they might have
taken it?

I'’m almost certain
it'’s somewhere in
the Science Center.

It'’s a pretty big place.

Don'’t suppose Bauman
will let me nosey around
without a search warrant?

No. Absolutely not.

But suppose I could
find out where they'’re
keeping the body?

You do that and I got
probable cause to move on.

[GASPS]

This is really cool.

Is all this stuff yours?

JOHNNY: Yeah.

[BELL RINGS]

Where'’d you get it?

JOHNNY: Whoa, whoa.
Be careful with that stuff.

You wanna play
a game with me?

Sure.

What do you wanna play?

Um...

Hide and go seek.

You'’re It.

[CHUCKLES]

"Hide and go seek."

I give up, Yvette.

Olly olly oxen free.

You win.

Oh, no!

Space Man!Give me that!

No, Yvette.

Give me that.

No! No!

I got a big,
red eye.

Don'’t...[LASER BEAMING]

I'’m sorry.

I didn'’t mean to.

I know.

You just shouldn'’t play
with other people'’s things.

You don'’t like me
anymore?

Don'’t cry.

I need a hug.

I'’m gonna
put this back.

Okay?
But please remember,

don'’t touch anything.

Okay.

Okay?Okay.

Hey, yo, Johnny.

Sorry. I didn'’t know
that Johnny had company.

I live here now.

You live here now?

Uh-huh.

Hey, Raleigh.

Hey.I see you'’ve met Yvette.

Yeah, yeah. I mean,
this is all a bit
sudden though, isn'’t it?

I mean, where'’d
she come from?

A petri dish.

That'’s what
Dr. Bauman says.

Yeah.
[CHUCKLES]

She'’s from
the university.

She'’s staying here
a while.

Ooh. You'’re starting
your own sorority, hmm?

It'’s complicated.

I bet.Yeah.

Hey, I got the results back
from those tranquilizers.

Range from a mild sedative
to strong enough
to kill an elephant.

Or a star quarterback.Yeah.

RALEIGH:
What happened to that?

Don'’t ask.

Come here.

[FOOTSTEPS]

[DOOR CLOSING]

Dr. Hatcher.

Didn'’t expect to
find you down here.

But you did.

What is it, Wells?

Dr. Bauman wants
to see you in
his office right away.

I have to
make a phone call.

He said it was
an emergency.

Where'’s Yvette?

Off campus.

But under my control.

You'’re gonna have
to get her back.

Why?

I'’ve decided to
shut this project
down for a while.

[POP]

Yvette. Did you...

Whoa! Whoa, whoa.

You'’re supposed to put
those clothes on.

But I was too hot.

I know, I know.

What'’s that?

My breast.

No, not that.

That.

I don'’t know.

I like your jacket.

It'’s soft.

[CHUCKLING]

I want Al.

I want Yvette.

I know you do, Adam.

I'’ll bring Yvette
to see you soon.

First I need you
to do something.

Remember the secret place
I told you to go
if there was trouble?

I need you to go
there now.

I'’ll bring Yvette
there, too, okay?

Okay.

Oh, wait.

[DEVICE WHIRRING AND CHIRPING]

And be careful of
the security guards.

I know.

WELLS: There he goes.

DR. BAUMAN: As I expected.

Just track him.

Don'’t take custody.

Once we get Yvette,

we'’ll carry out
all the terminations
at once.

You were right.

It is a surgical
incision scar.

Something planted
under the skin.

What?

You didn'’t know?

Only about
the cranial implant.

Wait a second.

I never get
the chance
to use this.

Does that thing hurt?

No, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no.

It'’ll be fine.

[BEEPING]

It'’s a tracking device
putting out radio signals.

That'’s how our friends
found Al Newman.

What'’s the range
on this thing?

Standard receiver'’s about
a mile and a half.

Oh, no.What?

If they can find
Al and Yvette,
they can find Adam.

All right. You get
them out of here.

I'’ll go get Adam.

All right. Let'’s go.

[THRILLING MUSIC PLAYING]

Raleigh, I still
don'’t see Mr. Domino.

Don'’t worry,
he'’ll be there.

He just likes to get there
in his own way, you know.

[SIREN WAILING]

Ah, yes. Yes.

He got me.
He got me.

Ten miles
over the limit.

I'’m scared.

Hey, hey, hey.
There'’s nothing to be
scared about.

They'’re just gonna
give us a ticket,

and we'’ll be
on our way.

LESLIE: It'’s okay,
honey. It'’s okay.

It'’s gonna be fine.

Good evening, officer.

I messed up, huh?

WELLS:
You have no idea.

Drive.

DR. BAUMAN: All units
in the vicinity,

move in and apprehend
Adam Newman.

Hi, Adam.

Hey...

It'’s you again.
But you'’re not Spiderman.

No, call me Night Man.

What do you say
we get out of here?

How?

Oh, cool!

[GASPING]

Okay.
Everybody out.

[GUN COCKING]

Now.

They catch
the other one?

No. Adam has managed
to elude us for now.

Good.

You know, I was sure that
would please you, Leslie.

Your unusual attraction
to our three suspects

always puzzled me.

So I ran a DNA test.

And I discovered
your little secret.

I don'’t know what
you'’re talking about.

I'’m talking about the source
of the genetic material

that you were supposed
to mix with mine

in order to create
Yvette, Adam, Al...

You switched it.

Didn'’t you,
Leslie?

You used your own.

Yvette, I want
you to meet
your genetic mother.

Mommy?

Yes.

The mother?

I was hoping I could offset
the bastard they have
for a father.

What kind of
a doctor are you?

You'’re a scientist,
not a housewife.

These are test subjects,

not family members.

What do you plan on doing
with these, uh,
test subjects, Doctor?

I'’ll take care
of Leslie.

Shall we?

Okay.

Back in the car.Hey.

Open the door.

So, uh, what'’s it
gonna be?

Long walk off
a short pier?

Just get in.

Ah!

[CAR ENGINE STARTING]

[WATER SPLASHING]Nighty night.

[THUD]

[WATER SPLASHING]

ADAM: Hey,
wait for me.

Adam, no,
go back.

Adam, welcome.

How did you get here?

Night Man brought me.

Night Man?
Who'’s Night Man?

You killed my brother.

Oh, Adam.
Look at me.

I'’m your dad.

No![GRUNTS]

[BELT CHIRPING]

Nice night.

[GIGGLING]

[GRUNTS]

I'’m not finished yet.

[GRUNTS]

[WATER SPLASHING]

[GLASS BREAKING]

[SLOW SAXOPHONE MUSIC PLAYING]

LESLIE: Thank you
for all your help.

You'’ll let me know
where you'’ll end up?

As soon as it'’s safe.

Take care.

Adam, Yvette. Come on,
it'’s time to go.

Hey, Charlie.
What'’s up?

I'’ll tell you
what'’s up.

Biggest legal dogfight
I'’ve seen in years.

Over Adam and Yvette?

Yeah. You got the State,
the human genome group,

got the university who says
they'’re part of its research.

And you got
the three pharmaceutical
companies

who funded Bauman.

What are you gonna
do about it?

They want me to take
custody of Adam and Yvette.

That'’s them over there,
isn'’t it?

Seems to me, you left out
the most important person.

The genetic mother.

Who wants to take them away
from all those institutions.

I understand what
you'’re saying, Johnny,

but I got a job to do.

Charlie, can'’t you just
look the other way?

Let them have
a normal life?

JOHNNY:
What if Dr. hatcher had taken
them out of your jurisdiction

before you got here?

[SIGHS DEEPLY]

You know, I think I need
to get my eyes checked.

I'’ve been having
this kind of
double vision lately.

Guess that really isn'’t them
over there after all, is it?

How about
I buy you a beer.

Make it two.
I like my beers cloned.

[THEME MUSIC PLAYING]
