- Did you get anything?
- A couple of sea trout.

Whitethroat, greenshank,
common sandpiper, anything else?

Crested grebe, redstart… There's a pair
of tufted duck over in the back pond.

All right.

All right. See you later.

You give me a hand to fix that fence
some time? Deer keep taking the trees.

OK.

Oi!

Where have you been?

Fishing.

- I got up early.
- Did you hell! You never came in last night.

- So?
- Don't talk to me like that.

Pen, he's here.

David, this has got to stop.

- Now, go on. You're going to be late.
- What about my birds?

- He hasn't got time.
- That ain't my fault, is it?

I'll be late. Sort the birds out.

Go on.

- Hiya, Penny. I've brought Anne-Marie.
- Yes.

Hello, love. Well, come in.
I'll show you round.

He's cute.

He's bored.

- Pulls his feathers out.
- That right?

Shouldn't keep birds like this.

Well, that's none of our business, is it?

Well, it is if you have to look after 'em.

This little owl, it needs mouse or rabbit.

Something with a bit of fur
and bones in it, not just dog food.

What's up, David?

Penny says you've been
staying out at night again.

And you've been hangin' round
your mother's place.

This is supposed to be
a fresh start here, in't it?

He's a bastard.

You can't expect people to be perfect.

We've talked about this.

There's a girl starting today.
You go and say hello.

I'm gonna be late for school. See ya.

Stop!

Where are you going?

- My class.
- Which is?

- Learning Support Three.
- God help us.

- Right, name?
- David Witton.

That's one demerit for being late.

And one for incorrect uniform.

So what you have to… what you have to…

Darren, can you just…?

Yeah, sit down.

Darren and Garry, can you just listen?

- I am listening!
- No, to me, not to Garry.

So, here, who can tell me
the verb in this sentence?

Come on.

Now just quiet!

Can we just concentrate on this
for a second, please?

Ow!

Er, Tracey.

Tracey, can you read this out to me?

No, miss.

Why not?

Cos we're all stupid, us.

OK…

Right. Someone… someone else, please.

Lee, what about you?

"The… dog… ran…

…towards… the house."

Towards the house.

Just you stop that! We'll have none…
Stop that now.

And the verb is, Lee?

"Ran".

Yes, thank you. Thank you, Lee.

- Poof!
- Fucking Jackie Chan.

Right! Right!

That is… Settle down. Settle down now.

Now we're going to look for the word
that describes the…

Billy, can you…?

Will you just sit down?

David?

David?

What?

I said, what are you looking at?

Great tits.

He's right! She has got great tits!

Hey, miss!

Your nipples have gone hard.
You can see 'em right through that top!

Great tits! Great tits!

Great tits! Great tits! Great tits!

Great tits! Great tits! Great tits!

Great tits! Great tits! Great tits!

Great tits! Great tits!

It was a mistake. She didn't
understand what I was saying.

- Whatever it was, you'll have to say sorry.
- All right.

Will you send David back if he's naughty?

No, love. We're all staying here.
I'm just a bit cross with David, that's all.

Anne-Marie. Have you said hello to David?

Hi.

- Hi.
- Anne-Marie's up from Lancaster.

- She staying for a while.
- Can I eat in my room?

I suppose.

What are you looking at?

Nothing.

Town's a dump.

Yeah.

It's shitville. They can't keep me 'ere.

- What are you doing?
- Someone needs to show me around.

No.

- I can't. It's almost midnight. Just go back.
- Don't know the way.

Eh, I thought it were you.

This is him.

Fucking classic you laid on Owthwaite.

- Snobby bitch.
- All right?

- All right.
- My brother.

- Who's this?
- Anne-Marie.

- How old are you then?
- Sixteen.

Are you fuck!

- Do you wanna come down the front?
- No.

- We're just going back.
- No, we weren't! Come on.

- Come on!
- Shit.

Whooo-hooo!

Shit, man!

Mind the fucking seats!

You fucking poof, Mel!

Want some whizz?

No.

How about you, Street Legal?

Go on then.

Chicken.

Fuck off, ya Chinky bastards!

- Shut up!
- Stop looking at my knickers!

I'm not!

Just get inside, will you? Sssh!

What took you?

Nothing.

That were good that.

- Where were you going before?
- None of your business.

OK, shit!

I'm not tired. What do you want to do now?

Go to sleep.

Hey, Davey!

- Davey!
- Hiya!

- You all right?
- Fine.

- You watching the tide?
- I'm watching it.

Wanna see what we can get?

All right.

Thank you.

Have you got a fish in there?

She throws them away, you know.

Oh?

You're David.

- Just like your dad.
- My dad?

He'd take you out.
Bring me back a rabbit.

I think you're remembering it wrong.
I never knew my dad.

My mum put me in care.
I haven't lived there since I was small.

You're good to her.
She doesn't deserve it.

Robbie, come on, come on.

David, are you still here?

There you go.

What are those?

Parus major.

Great tits.

Can you get on with that, please, Tracey?

So what are they doing?

Nesting.

There's probably chicks in there by now.

People confuse them with blueys,
but it's the head you have to look at.

Black and white, see?

Who taught you all about that?

Nobody.

I go up to the nature reserve
and just pick it up.

Well, go on then.

Well, they'll take insects and grubs.

But you can just give them some of these.

Keep still.

Oh, look at that!

That's very interesting, David.

Did you bring your note from yesterday?

I forgot.

Well, I still need that, OK?

Right!

Have you finished?

I can't do it. Pathetic.

Yes, you can. You've only got to fill in the gaps.

Here they are.

Clever, innit?

They wait for the tide, then wade the channel.

- Why do they do it?
- It's all fenced off over there.

Houses, dogs and cars.

I think they come here for the peace,
don't you?

Did you know my dad?

Why?

Somebody told me that he used to
bring me down here when I was a kid.

Yeah. Yeah, he did, yeah.

You never said.

Well, you never asked.

What was he like?

Came and went with the seasons, son.

Like a plover.

Then one year, he just…

stopped coming back.

How old was I?

Four, five.

And what happened?

Well…

I didn't see you again after that.

I think that's when they took you into care.

Then, one summer,
you must have been about 13,

you just, kind of, turned up.

And you recognised me?

Yeah, course I recognised you.

Couldn't I have stayed with you?

Look at me.

I think we'll send these buggers back, eh?

Till we finish that fence.

- Look, it's easy.
- I'm not keen. What about her?

She isn't up to it. She isn't fucking up to it.

A couple of weeks, just keep it shut.
Don't let him go home.

- I can't.
- Just a couple of weeks, for fuck's sake.

- No!
- I always come back, don't I?

You all right, boy?

Hey!

Jesus, where have you been?

Nowhere.

- I tell you, she's been on summat.
- I've not!

Don't tell me that. Look at me!

- You weren't in at 11.
- Am I not allowed now?

- I'll have a talk later.
- Oh, yeah.

You're the one to get her back on track,
aren't you? She'll listen to you.

I can't send you back, you know,
any time I like.

Why don't you then?

She was with me.
I was showing her round town.

Were you?

For Chrissake's sort 'em out.

How did you get him to do that?
He won't bloody come near me.

- He don't like you.
- Bollocks!

Why d'you keep him?

To make you feel good?

Go on, get to school.

OK, you have ten minutes left.

Come.

Ah, yes… Witton.

Hello, David.

Now, Miss Owthwaite tells me
you have a hidden talent.

What?

I was just telling Mr Wilson and Mr Carr
about the nature reserve.

We have an inspection team
visiting the school next week.

I thought you could give us a tour.
Show us what you know.

It won't be too much trouble for you, will it?

Come on.

Come on.

Pretty fucking Polly.

Come on.

Come on.

Aagh!

Fuck!

Shit!

Fucking bird!

Fucking bird!

Fuck that!

- Come away from there.
- You shitty, smelly, shitting, bastard bird!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight!

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

Hey!

- What did you do that for?
- Shouldn't fucking stick out, should he?

And neither should you.

Nature Boy.

David.

- It were an accident.
- Why did you let him?

What? I promise, he was only trying…

You just let him do what he likes.

He's… he's not a bad person.

You're not my mother.

No, no, no, Mum. It's all right.

Where did my dad go?

Where did he go?!!

You don't know, do you?

Eh?

He went and…

…you just put me away.

Is that what they told you?

Jesus! It wasn't me.

Your dad did it.

What?

Bastard doesn't trust me.

So fucking bright spark,

he goes and leaves you on the island.

With the pervert.

Pervert?

He fucks little boys. I'm not to say anything…

- Look, you are lying!!
- Yeah, they know all about him.

I don't understand.

Go away.

Go away.

Go away. Go away.

Go away.

Go away, go away.

Go away, go away, go away,
go away, go away, go away.

Go away, go away, go away,
go away, go away…

Go away, go away, go away,
go away, go away, go away.

Go away, go away, go away,
go away, go away, go away…

Ought to keep them out.

Yeah.

- What's up?
- Nothing.

I saw my mum.

Right.

I'm remembering stuff.

What do you remember?

Is it true… what she said?

Nothing ever happened, I promise.

It's such a long time ago.

I think the world of you, you know that.

Can we leave it?

I'm going for a swim.

Cheeky!

You're not supposed to come down here.
It's closed to the public.

I'm here now.

No!

No, the tide's too strong.
It carries you round to the point.

Oh, shut it. You can look after me.

It's cold!

It's beautiful!

How long have you come here?

Always.

What's that?

Calm down. It's only whizz.

What did you do that for, shit for brains?!

Shit for brains!

Go on.

You can fuck me.

No.

Why would we do that?

There's a reason for everything here.

It doesn't matter how cruel it is.
Can't you understand that?

- I like swimming. Maybe I'll come again.
- Not without me.

The tide's too strong.

OK.

Don't tell anyone else about this place.

It's private.

- Like a secret?
- Yeah.

- Come on, I'll show you round.
- No, I'm tired.

Hey!

Don't you fancy me?

Don't know.

Everyone else does.

At the last place,
he was always having a fiddle.

Touching me.

"Keep that trap shut, girl,
or I'll pull you fucking inside out."

Bastard.

Will you tell me something?

There's a guy who works here.
I think, I think…

…that he did something like that.

We go fishing.

Fishing?

- Did he try to do you?
- No.

No, this was a long time ago.
He's not like that, not now.

It's a secret.

Yeah.

Right.

"And now the voices were raised,
soft and taunting to begin with.

'You dirty Micks!'

'You filthy old Prods!'

Tempers flared and voices grew louder."

Sssh!

"'Kick the Pope!' 'To hell with King Billy!'

No one knew who threw the first stone.

One seemed to come
from each side simultaneously…"

Oh, miss, it shit on me!

That's normal behaviour, Shelley.
We're on their territory.

Well, let's move on. Let's keep going.

Agh! It fucking bit me!

Stay calm, Darren.
You're just making it worse.

But, sir, it fucking bit me!

Come on now!

Hurry, you boys. What are you doing?

- He nicked me Coke!
- Never mind that. Just settle down!

David.

I wonder if you can tell us what a passerine is?

Er, pipits, skylarks and swallows.

They only stay here long enough to breed.
They have other places.

They stay for a while until it's time
and then they go.

Most of them try and make it back
after the winter, but…

some of them don't make it.

He's impressive.

We're just trying to value him properly.

Sir, look.

David! I think we should leave it!

Come back now! We can't do anything!

David!

- Calm down, everyone.
- It's horrible!

Oh, sir, he's bloody butchered it.

He's killed it! That's horrible!

It's all over him.

Where's he going?

David! David!!

David, come back!

Shit!

You're fucking dead!

Anne-Marie, if you've got any idea where
David's gone to, you have to tell us.

Please, love.

- I'm telling you, I don't know.
- I think you do.

Are you calling me a liar?

I think you'd better leave
this with us now, Pen.

- I'm just worried, that's all.
- We are all.

They're looking for, son.

What did you say?

Because they'd ask you, wouldn't they?

Eh?

Pervert on the island.

Did you hurt someone?

Yeah.

What happened?

No one ever knew.

The kid never let on.

But I had to get away.

So I came here.

I tried to change.

Keep meself to meself.

Then your dad asked me to
look after you for a couple of months.

Did he know?

He trusted me.

Your mum wasn't very well
and he said he'd be back soon.

I thought…

I…

I thought, like, it was a test.

He never came back?

No.

Things got…

Things got…

…difficult,

So I rang them up.

I told them who it was
and they come and took you.

I had children of my own once.

All right?

Get in.

Get in the fucking car.

Are you looking after David?

- You shouldn't come here.
- Yeah, I kn…

Look…

will you please just give him this?

And tell him…

Tell him that's all there is, really.

You look nice.

This is it!

- Dirty bastard!
- Hey, Nature Boy!

Is he fucking you in there, is he?

She told us about you and your sicko pal!

- Come on! Get out here!
- Come on!

Come on!

Come on!

It's just the old gadge in there.

Right! Tell me where he is now!

Come on, you bitch!

You know. Where does he go?

No!

Get in!

Woooh-hoo-hoo!

Come on! Come on!

No chance! Woooh-hoo-hoo!

There you are, you bastard!

Come on!

You're not getting away this time!

He's knackered!

Get him! Go on!

Woo! Woo! Woo! Wooo-hooo!

Yeee-ha!

Shit!

Come on!

Come on!

What's the matter? Why won't it start?

- Shit!
- The fucking tide's coming in!

My fucking car! My car!

Let's get fucking out of here.

Bill, come back, you…!

Bill!

Deck!

Wait for us!

Deck!

Deck!

Deck!

Deck!

Anne-Marie?

Anne-Marie!

Anne-Marie!!

Haa! Haa! Go on!

Haa! Haa!

Go on! Go on!

Go on!

Oh, David!

- Are you… are you all right?
- Yeah.

I hoped… I thought you might
be with Anne-Marie. She's run off.

Why did you let the birds go?
They'll just die.

They'll die if they stay.

Please stay.

We can work something out
and when Anne-Marie gets home…

No!

No.

Wait a minute.

Your mother came.
She asked me to give you this.

She said it were all she had.

Thanks.

- I've got to go.
- OK.

Subtitles ripped by Peterlin

Hello.

What the hell do you think you're doing?

See ya.

You're a fucking liar!

You'll lie about fucking anything!

I can't do anything!

Just leave me alone.

Is it true that your wife is working
for Blexco as a PR consultant?

Davey.

Where you been? I've been waiting for you.

Jen?

We won't leave this wood. There isn't gonna
be a runway here, cos you can't get us out.

You'll have to kill me first.

Come on, just do it.

I think you should go and find your dad
if that's what you want to do.

I'm getting them out.
It's too dangerous, as far as I'm concerned.

Jenny! Jenny!

You can come if you want.

It's up to you.

You coming?

I… I can't.

- Do you like candy floss?
- Yeah.

Oh, my God!

What's wrong with you, David?

Why didn't you make her come out
of that stupid tunnel?

You should have made her come out!

This there someone else?

You're just like him.

A bit tricky.

Thomas! There's someone
in the fucking house! Get out!

He doesn't want me.
He doesn't care.

You're just like me, Davey.

You're a runaway, too.

Dad!
