Nashville (2012–2018): Season 3, Episode 8 - You're Lookin' at Country - full transcript

It's country music's biggest night of the year at the 48th Annual CMA Awards in Nashville. Up for a total of 11 awards between them, Rayna and Luke's evening begins with an unfortunate ...

Previously on "Nashville"...

Just tell Micah that I love him, okay?

- When's she coming?
- She's not.

Teddy: She is the full package.

You get what you pay for.

They're prostitutes?

Think they prefer the term "escorts. "

They made me look like a total idiot!

It's a reality show.

Luke: No matter what happens, win or lose,

we got each other's backs.

I am gonna win those awards, though.

[Laughs]

[Sighs]

Where the heck did I put my speeches?

"Speeches" plural?

Well, I am up for five, you know,

but don't worry, darling...
I'll save a few for you.

Oh, just five?

I'm sorry, honey, 'cause, you know,

your future wife's up for
six, but who's counting?

[Laughs]

You're not nervous, are you?

[Sighs] No.

Yeah, maybe a little bit.

You know, it's a big deal this year

'cause of the label and everything.

Did you look in your bag?

Well, yeah, I looked in there once.

They could be buried down there.

I don't know what the hell I did with them.

----

When were you gonna tell me about this?

What?

Prenup?

I figured it was a given, to be honest,

and that we would talk about it,

but I sure as heck wasn't
planning on it tonight...

Not with all these awards to win

and us looking so damn gorgeous.

Found your speeches.

Thanks, babe.

It's going to be an action-packed hour

of arrivals tonight as we get ready

for the 48th annual country music awards.

[Sighs] Well, I can't say
I've ever shown up to the CMA's

looking like a hippo in tulle and lace.

Oh, stop it. You look gorgeous.

Ooh!

Well, there's nothing I
can do about the belly,

but what do you think about the top part?

Is it too revealing? Mnh-mnh.

I'm meeting Avery's parents tonight.

They're flying in from Ohio.

Meaning what, exactly?

Meaning I'm not great with normal.

They're gonna love you. You're
giving them a grandchild.

Uh-huh.

Surprisingly under-represented
is Juliette Barnes,

with just one nod this
year, for song of the year.

Juliette, you might recall, was
a no-show at last year's awards

when news broke of her mother's suicide.

Mama, wake up!

[Crying] No!

Look what you're doing to me!
You cannot force me to do this!

I'm your mama!

What are you hiding? Give me my...

What are you hiding?!

Can't imagine what will be
going through Juliette's head

as she walks the red carpet here tonight.

You all right?

Is the car here? I am ready to go.

Cheers.

Not exactly sure why we're celebrating.

You haven't won yet.

Well, what can I say? I
got a good feeling about it.

Why don't you go and get dressed?

Come on! We got to go!

I'm not exactly in a hurry.

- If I didn't have to go, I wouldn't.
- Seriously?

We're about to perform live
in front of millions of people.

Everybody across the
country's gonna see us tonight.

Yeah, and everybody thinks that I'm stupid

and a waste of a human being.

This one person says

I should just do everybody
a favor and kill myself.

All right, you know what? You
can't read that crap, okay?

And you sure as hell
can't take it seriously.

This isn't the reality show

we're shooting tonight, all right?

This is the CMA's.

It's live.

Nobody can edit you...

To make you look like a fool or...

A freak.

You're a good person.

You're talented.

You've done this all on your own.

Do you think your folks
are gonna be watching?

Probably not.

But after tonight, it's not
gonna matter much, is it?

Hey, dad, what song were you nominated for?

Oh, uh, "ball and chain. "

Luke Wheeler had a big hit with it.

"Ball and chain"? What does that mean?

Oh, it's when you're stuck with somebody.

Like my mom's stuck with me?

Hey, she's not stuck with you, buddy.

She just... Needed a little breather.

We all do once in a while.

She'll be back soon.

Mwah. I know it.

Go grab your shoes, all right? Time to go.

All right.

You look incredible. Mwah!

I'm so lucky to have you

and Micah and the CMA's in my life!

[Chuckles]

So... Have you talked to
Micah's grandparents yet?

[Sighs]

I mean, they must have
some idea where Kiley is.

Well, I mean, they're still in Texas.

I left a couple messages.

But hopefully, they'll get back to me soon.

Yeah.

Look...

I know it's been stressful
having Micah here full time,

but it's fun, too, right, hasn't it?

Micah: Zoey! I can't find my shoes!

He really likes you. You know that?

Coming!

All right.

[Sighs]

The stars are shining
bright with the biggest acts

in country music appearing tonight,

including Carrie Underwood, Brad paisley,

Luke Wheeler, Rayna Jaymes, Blake...

[TV mutes]
- Hi. - Hey.

How's fishing?

The best. [Laughs]

Maddie caught more fish than I did.

Taught her how to make a fire.

I ate way too damn many s'mores.

It was perfect. How about you?

Good... I was working with Terry mostly,

trying to get him gigs and, uh,

trying to get Rayna to
listen to him, actually,

but she's kind of busy right now.

CMA's are starting soon. You gonna watch?

No, I'm not much for award shows.

Yeah, me either, but I got
a bunch of friends nominated,

plus an Uncle whose co-write

is up for single of the year, so...

Only validation I need for my music

is to know that people like it, so...

I'll be in my room.

Well, don't expect me to make dinner.

I won't!

- 'Cause I ain't missing this.
- I know.

You know what? Maybe I
should've brought my other hat.

You know I'm fine with a prenup, right?

I thought we agreed we weren't
gonna talk about this tonight.

Did we? I don't remember that.

Here we go.

Just that it caught me by surprise.

You know, it was just so out of the blue.

Fine. You want to talk about
it? Let's talk about it.

My ex-wife, married to
me for all of six years,

took me for more than half
of everything I'd ever earned

in my entire life to that point.

And I'm sorry about that.

But that's not me, and
I think you know that.

Yeah, I do. I do know that.

And believe me, anything
I earn from this point on,

I'm fine with 50/50.

Anything we earn.

Yeah, anything we earn.

[Knock on window] Man:
Sir? We're ready for you.

All right.

[Sighs]

Let's go rack up some shelf bling.

[Cheers and applause,
camera shutters clicking]

Photographer: Hey, Luke! Look this way!

[Cheers and applause]

[Cheers and applause]

Reporter: You're not only here tonight

as country's newest power couple,

but you're here as competitors.

How does that feel?

If either of us is lucky enough

to take home a trophy tonight,

it'll end up in the same
house, so that's a win-win.

Although, I have to say,

if I'm lucky enough to
get a trophy tonight,

I might have to take it
to my highway 65 offices.

[Laughs] Oh, there we go.

Rayna's busy building this great label.

Any plans to sign your future husband here?

As much as I'd love to see
Rayna calling all the shots,

I am staying put at Edgehill.

Well, one more question for you guys.

You're up for tonight's top award,

entertainer of the year.

Any predictions?

Woman: Sadie!
- I think it's just gonna be a classic case

man: Sadie, over here! Sadie!
- Of letting the best man win.

- Sadie, can I get your autograph?
- Or woman.

I love you! Isn't that right, Sadie?

- Hello.
- Hi, honey.

Ohhh!

This girl right here is on a roll...

Two singles on the charts and
up for new artist of the year.

I couldn't be prouder.

Well, signing with Rayna Jaymes
was the icing on the cake.

Well, you're sweet, but I am
rooting for you tonight, girl.

Thank you. Wait. Can we take a picture?

Say "highway 65"!

Highway 65!

Thank you. I'll see you later. Bye.

All right, Rayna Jaymes, Luke Wheeler...

A beautiful couple on
the red carpet tonight.

What about you, Sadie? Are
you here with anyone special?

Oh, I've been so busy touring,

I could barely pick out
a dress, let alone a date.

[Cellphone chimes]
Well, you look beautiful.

Thank you.

I- I'm... Gonna go on
inside, so just wish me luck.

Woman: I love you, Will! Good luck.

I'm so excited to be here.

I mean, I-I'd be thrilled just
to have a ticket to this show,

but to be nominated and getting to sing,

it's crazy! It's crazy, indeed.

Now, Layla, isn't it ironic

that you moved to Nashville
to be a country singer

but you ended up on another
reality show instead?

Yes, situationally, it is,

but if you're talking about verbal irony,

which is the use of words
to express the opposite

of their literal meaning...
A- and I believe that

that's what you're
attempting to do right now...

Then no, no, it's not.

Hey, uh, before we go in there,

I just want to give a shout-out
to my home state of Texas!

Hook 'em horns! Whoo!

[Cheers and applause]
