Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 9, Episode 5 - Frozen: Thin Air, Fat Chance - full transcript

See the little ants crawling up?

Yeah, I see them.

What do you think? You
wanna sit down and have a meal?

[Wes] It's not gonna
do a whole lot for us.

I do feel like we're
getting down to it.

Where we have to have
some food, some protein,

even if it's small amounts.

[Jermaine] Cook
them or eat them raw?

I think sit right
here and eat them.

Until you don't want to anymore.

[Wes] I'll go with that.

[Spits and groans]

[Laughs and spits]

That's nothing tasty
about that at all.

I'm a survivalist, but eating
the ant, it's disgusting.

[Spits]

Tastes like
dish-washing detergent.

That sucks, man. I was
so excited about that.

[Wes] My number one
survival skill's being stubborn.

I ain't quitting, me.

- I don't have a problem with this right here at all.
- It's crazy.

I really don't like it.

It's small wins.

I think there are about 10,000
small wins in this whole pile.

Hmm.

- You eating the bone marrow?
- Mmm-hmm.

Hey, that's good for you.

[Jake] I feel like a vulture.

[Narrator] On day
nine of the challenge,

Jake delivered a significant
protein win for his team.

A coyote. Doesn't seem
like it's been dead that long.

That's the last of the meat.

- [Waz] That's a problem.
- Yeah.

The next kinda push
forward is gonna be.

Tackling the fish.
We're getting 'em.

[Waz] I'm making
this crawdad trap.

Pretty confident there
are gonna be crawdad.

In and around this area.

We got some trees with their
roots growing out of the banks.

So as that water rushes past.

Bugs are gonna get
caught up in there,

so I know there's gonna be
crawdad sorta hanging around.

In Australia we
call them yabbies.

[Sara] Are you gonna
bait it with coyote stuff?

Yeah, I've already got
coyote kidney in there.

[Sarah] Awesome.

[Waz] These rocks are
very loose under foot.

The last thing I
wanna do is fall in,

'cause then I'll lose
a lot of body heat.

Whoa.

My feet are freezing.

I wanna get right up
under the backup here.

Under this ledge.

All right, so that's
sat off nicely there.

My feet are at a pretty
harsh sting right now.

So I'm gonna head back
over, get these feet by the fire.

And warm up a little bit.

Think if we can get
some of these trout,

it's gonna boost everything.

How am I supposed to get
over there without getting wet?

Why I hate this weather
so freaking much,

no matter how much
water I'm drinking,

it's like my skin's
getting dryer,

my lips are cracking
and bleeding more.

I'll try here in the
rapids a little bit.

I don't see any signs of them
even coming through here.

[Sighs]

[Sara breathing heavily]

Waiting for the sun
to beat the wind.

That's well
described right there.

[Jermaine] I'll go
check the snares.

[Wes] Jermaine, he is
trying so hard to snare rabbits.

He's been out there every
day with no returns so far,

and good lord, anything to
eat would be good besides ants.

[Narrator] After 10
days of trap failures,

and Sarah's fish
basket still incomplete...

[Jermaine] We just
gotta get it done.

So we can get
it [bleep] in there.

[Sarah] I hate to say it, dude.

But this is a situation
of survival over ego.

[Stuttering] I... I agree!

[Narrator] ...A growing hunger
exacerbates team frustration

[Wes] Well, I hope that
damn fish trap gets don

I'm getting awfully
impatient I swear.

I might have to talk to her.

Like she's a
16-year-old daughter.

- Hey, I gotta talk to you for a second.
- Mmm-hmm.

Sorry if it's causing
you anxiety,

and I don't wanna have
anxiety with you or at you.

- Okay.
- [Sighs]

- Fish basket's taking forever.
- I know.

It's like four or five days now.

- I know. Mmm-hmm.
- You're a craftsman.

But we gotta get this
mother in the water.

- I'm hungry.
- I feel ya.

I am [bleep] hungry.

I don't wanna be [bleep]
with you or anything else.

No, no, I appreciate it.

I'm just, I'm stressing
about it in my head.

And I don't wanna have
any anxiety between us,

because we get along fantastic.

Yeah. No, I appreciate.

The open, honest
communication, dude.

I'd much rather that you
have this conversation with me.

Than, you know, just
sit there and boil in it.

[Wes] I don't want to do that.

And hopefully between
Jermaine, what he's up to,

you finishing this sucker up.

And me fishing,
we'll get some food.

- Yeah.
- Thank you.

Yeah, no problem.

[Jeremy] I'm exhausted
and I'm starving.

Let's see if that permafrost
has melted some,

see if we can catch a grub.

[Trish] All right, let's try it.

[Narrator] Trish and Jeremy
attempted to procure cattail.

By burning through
a foot of permafrost.

[Jeremy] That's still solid.

[Sighs]

[Narrator] Only to
come up empty-handed,

leaving them 10 days
without consuming any food.

It's like ice under
the surface layer.

Of this bark, did
you notice that?

[Jeremy] Yeah, I notice it.

I know a lot of times grub
gets in these rotten logs.

If we can find some grubs.

Then we might be
able to catch a fish.

If we can't catch
a fish on grubs,

we can at least eat the grubs.

[Trish] Hey, Jeremy.

- You find something?
- [Trish] I think so.

Heck yeah!

[Trish] Found a big old worm.

[Jeremy] Good find, Trish.

I'm gonna cut me a fishing pole.

[Trish] Jeremy is feeling
pretty similar to me.

With not eating for 10 days.

This is definitely the
toughest physical challenge

I've ever taken on.

But Jeremy and I can do.

Pretty much everything
together as a team,

to just keep each other
motivated to keep going.

[Jeremy] I'm hoping them
fish and stuff are moving.

Along that bank over
in that deeper water.

- Is that two lines each?
- [Jeremy] Yeah.

- There you go.
- Thank you.

You're welcome.

Which location are
we gonna try first?

This one closest to us?

We haven't tried anything
on the right side of the lake.

I don't know.

It didn't look like it had
the drop-off that we need.

[Narrator] After their partner Joe
was forced to leave the challenge...

[Sighs] This just
wasn't my time.

[Narrator] ...Ky and
Gabby remain steadfast.

In their efforts
to score a fish.

- Looks like a nice little drop-off there.
- Right there.

[Gabby] All you can
do is cast and try, right?

[Ky] It's a bit frustrating
Gabby and I have got.

Everything dialed
in in this place,

except for how to get
food at the moment.

We had a success earlier on.

But the lake was in
different condition.

When they only had one
option for a breathing hole,

which was where
we made it in the ice,

they were all coming here.

And now they go
wherever they like,

far and wide.

We know they're there.

Yeah. It's kinda defeating.

We're sitting here
for hour and hours.

Trying to pull something in.

Hope for the best, and
not even getting a nibble.

Ooh, ooh! I just felt a tug.

- [Gasps]
- I think you have one.

Get her in, get
her in, get her in!

- It's huge!
- Get it.

[Gasps] I can hardly
fit my hands around it!

Oh, my gosh!

- [Gabby] That's a beauty.
- [Laughs]

- Oh, my gosh, it's shooting row out.
- Ooh! Eggs!

Quick, catch it! That's food.

Wow, we got food for tonight!

- That's awesome, Ky.
- That's a victory.

That's a huge girl, wow.

All right, let's kill her
so we get this over with.

- Yeah. Do you have the hatchet?
- I do.

[Gabby] Losing a
partner any time is tough.

This challenge is
no joke, but, um,

Ky and I have this.
There's no doubt in my mind.

We're gonna finish
this challenge together.

[Ky] Welcome to the kitchen

[sighs] How long
you think we have?

[Ky] I think there's enough in
there that we start eating now.

You did good, Ky.

- You did real good.
- [Laughs]

[Laughs]

- Look at that.
- [Giggles]

How good does it taste?

It tastes sweet,
like... amazing.

[Gabby] I already feel better.

This was our last
key to the puzzle.

[Gabby] Now I have the task of.

Trying to catch a
bigger fish than Ky.

[Both laugh]

[Winds blowing]

- [Sarah] You heard that, right?
- [Wes] Yup.

Big thing.

- [Growling]
- Shh, shh, shh.

[Footsteps]

[Jermaine] They're pacing.

[Wes sighs]

[Animal growling]

Guess it's back
to trying to sleep

with wildlife outside your camp.

Later.

Hey, Wes. What do you call that?

That's a mountain lion.

Those are definitely fresh.

Less than 50 feet
from the shelter.

- [Wes] Looks like he's checking us out.
- Yeah.

Oh, wow.

They're certainly
not scared of us.

Usually we're in the woods
and we look like humans,

and the mountain lions really
don't want anything to do with us.

Here, we look like animals.

We're wearing hides.

They look at us just
like they would a deer.

Or an elk, and so
we're actually prey.

We're one of the many things
that they can eat out here.

[Jermaine] I'll go
check the snares.

Hey, good luck, buddy.

- [Wind blows]
- Oh! Brutal.

There's a distinct
creepy feeling.

Any time that you feel
there's an animal around,

but the thought of walking
to check the snares,

it's scaring the hell out of me.

But we need a
food win. We need it.

Nothing.

The traps are perfect.

I mean, if you
look at these traps,

you'd think you bought
them at the store.

But nobody wants to come in.

That set-up is so perfect.
Just go in there, rabbit.

See if I missed anything.

This whole area's
a little creepy.

Looks like there's a den.

We know a mountain
lion's been around our place.

I have my hatchet ready.

[Whispers] Yeah, it's scary.

I don't know how smart this is.

I'm just trying to scan,

make sure we're
not being looked at.

It feels like
something's hunting me.

It feels like
something's hunting me.

So we out of here.
We're leaving.

Other lion tracks. See the paws?

You can really feel
they're present. It's scary.

We do not run if a
mountain lion's around.

Because then you'd become prey.

So don't do that.

Don't run.

That fish really
just revitalized me.

Body and mind feel
good after that meal.

My head's in it,
I'm ready for this,

I'm excited about the
approaching extraction.

- I feel like I'm still riding high from that.
- Yeah.

Yeah, between pus draining
into your stomach, and...

Due to the lack of
brushing my teeth.

And being able to floss,

I've had some food that's
caught under one of my teeth.

I think I need to
call the medic.

[Josh] Hey, Ky. What's going on?

Well, I've got a bit of
an abscess in my jawline.

It's been festering
for a few days now,

but I can taste, like,
the pus in my mouth.

And this jawline's
really tender to touch.

I'm highly aware
that any abscess.

Around the head area.

Is something that medics
will be concerned about.

All right, let's
have a look inside.

Okay, yeah, I do
see some swelling.

You can see kinda, like, the
fluid building up down here.

Having an abscess in your jaw.

There's a number of
issues that could come of it.

She could lose a portion
of the jawbone or the tooth.

Infection that close to
the brain is a problem.

Infection can
get into the blood,

which would be an issue.

- We'll see if it gets better or worse.
- Okay.

So you can stay
in the fight, okay?

If this abscess can go
away, then I'll feel happy.

To continue through
the challenge.

'Cause I'm like, what's the
problem, how can I fix it?

[Jake] So today, I'm gonna be
working on a figure 4 deadfall.

The big thing is
finding the right rock.

That will drop and
crush the animal.

Definitely big enough for a mouse
and certainly big enough for squirrels.

I'm gonna bring
that back to camp.

Keep my eye out for some sticks.

The deadfall trap is
fairly straight forward,

but the other side
of it is it's so fickle.

Because you need that trigger
stick to be just super sensitive.

So, just a mouse
brushes against it.

And the whole thing collapse.

Here's the notch back here.

See, I'm a little worried 'cause
this edge just seems a little.

Wonky doodle.

Okay.

Have you ever been
successful with one of these?

[Waz] Yeah, yeah. In Australia,
we used to catch a bunch.

Of different, like, field mice.

- [Jake exclaims] - [Waz]
It's all right, it's all right.

[Jake] Yeah. God.

- Put some weight on it.
- Uh-huh.

[Waz] Will you ever let go?

[Jake] This rock is just, I
mean, if I sneezed right now,

it'd probably go off.

All right, nice work.

[Clears throat]

[Sara] I keep getting
short of breath.

[Breathing heavily]

I just don't understand why
I'm getting short of breath.

Oh.

Okay.

[Sighs]

This is Sara for the medic.

I'm getting short of breath
and I'm not sure why.

Could you just come down
and check on me for a second?

Thank you.

[Katrina] Hey, Sara.

- [Sara] Hey.
- What's going on?

[Sara speaking]

[Katrina] Okay.

Let me take some vitals on you.

I wanna listen to
your lung sounds.

I wanna check your pulse oxi.

- How much oxygen you have, okay?
- Okay.

- [Katrina] Having any, like, chest tightness or...
- No.

[Katrina] And what
were you doing.

When you started
feeling short of breath?

- Just walking around.
- Walking?

We are at a very high elevation.

And when people
aren't used to this,

uh, even a little
bit of exertion.

Can really, really
do a lot on the body.

Deep breath for me.

Good. Out.

Checking Sara's vitals. Her
heartrate was extremely elevated.

Her oxygen saturation was low.

It's called high altitude
pulmonary edema.

- Okay.
- And sometimes people will get that.

When they're exerting themselves
in high altitude, which we are.

[Narrator] High altitude can
increase pressure in the blood vessels.

To the point that capillaries
leak fluid into the lungs,

which if left untreated,
could turn fatal.

I think you're feeling,

you know, just a
little out of breath.

But we just don't want you
to start getting a fluid buildup,

you know, in your
lungs from this.

[Sara] I'm actually concerned
about the shortness of breath.

I'm not from a place
that's higher in elevation.

And I guess my body's
just now reacting to that.

As soon as you
feel short of breath,

um, just go ahead
and kind of relax.

Try to get your breath back.

Just take a minute, kind of sit
down and catch your breath, okay?

[Sara] I didn't even
think about altitude.

At all.

Sometimes I just question,
I could be back in Louisiana.

In 80 degree temps.

Never wanna quit,

but I think this challenge
definitely test me more.

Than any of them ever has.

[Trish] Even though we haven eaten
for energy, it's mind over matter out here.

And my spirit's still
good. I'm not giving up.

[Jeremy] I'm gonna go
there and check my bait.

So what I've noticed
down here is that.

As you walk up down the creek.

You'll see the
trout, they'll dart in

'cause they see your
shadow or they see you.

And they get scared
and they run off.

So what we're gonna do is.

Put our poles in right here
and let the poles do the fishing.

While we ease back.

You move too
much, it runs them off.

I know.

[Jeremy] I get lightheaded.

A trout.

- A trout.
- [Trish] No. [Gasps]

Yay! You got one! Oh, my god.

Yay, first fish.

- [Jeremy] That's a win in my books.
- Look at all the colors on it.

[Jeremy] Finally, I
caught something.

- [Trish] Yay.
- [Jeremy laughs]

Catching this fish is amazing.

We're finally figuring out the
curve to this Montana winter...

He's gotta get rinsed off.

...and slowly succeeding.

[Jeremy] We can check our lines.

- Look, look, I'm getting another hit.
- Come on.

Yeah, he's on, he's
on. You got fish on.

- Oh, my god.
- [Bleep]

[Both exclaiming]

[Laughing]

[Trish] That's even bigger.

[Jeremy] Oh, that feels
good we got two trout.

That means I'm
getting food in my belly.

I know it looks small,

but after 10 days,
if you haven't eaten,

this is like the
biggest fish ever.

[Both laugh]

[Wes] Sarah, am I gonna be
able to sink that fish basket here.

Before the sun goes down?

- I just gotta focus on this.
- All right.

Frustrated with Sarah.

She's making a fish basket,

which can reasonably
take two days,

but this is going
on day five now.

I need for this damn
thing to be in the water.

[Sarah] The fish
trap is finally done.

[Wes] Oh, sweet.

I'm stoked about this. This has
been a massive labor of love.

So you can see, big old cone.

One way in,
hopefully no way out.

Thing of beauty.

Sarah, can we set that?

- [Sarah] Yeah.
- [Jermaine] Good luck.

- May the crawfish gods be with you.
- Something's gonna be with us.

This is gonna work out.

Whoo, it's been a
long time coming.

And I'm so happy that
she got that fish trap done.

- Okay, so the deepest spot is right there.
- [Sarah] Yep.

[Wes] Problem is is
that the water's rolling.

And I'm gonna have to put.

- A pretty substantial rock on it.
- Yeah.

- [Wes] 'Cause you know I'm going in, right?
- Yep.

- There's no way I can't go in.
- Yeah.

[Wes] The icy
creek, it's freezing.

The only reason it's not
frozen is because it's moving.

[Bleep] This is gonna be cold.

[Sarah] Ah, I do not envy you.

[Wes groans]

[Wes exclaims]

- [Sarah] You good?
- [Wes groans]

[Wes] Your toes
instantly go numb.

And then 30 seconds
later, they're hurting a lot.

It's really, really awful.

- Ooh, boy.
- Hey, now.

Hey, now.

Okay.

I mean, that looks
good right there.

Sarah, I know I was bitching
and moaning at you all day,

but that is an
outstanding piece of work.

- Thanks, man.
- Good job.

Really good job.

[Sara] All right, I'll
start handing you stuff.

Hold on, I can't... I'm
trying to catch my breath.

It's weird.

So a little earlier today..

[Sighs] Okay.

...um, I was walking and I just got
short of breath for all of a sudden.

I have no idea why.

Then it happened again
and it happened again.

The medic told me the
reason I'm short of breath.

Is because, basically, we're
in Montana and it's cold,

- but elevation.
- [Jake] Well, that make sense.

[Sara] Yeah, it
does, doesn't it?

[Jake] Sara is struggling
with something.

It's getting to the point where I
get, you know, a little concerned.

I mean, I really want my whole
group to be feeling healthy.

And I'm starting
to question that.

So I am checking
our deadfall trap,

disappointed that it
hasn't been triggered,

is clearly has had something
munching on the trigger stick.

Eh, it just...

I think if a rabbit
was to do that,

it probably would have gone off,

but there's no way a mouse
or something like that's.

Gonna set off that
trigger. It's just not...

Um, not sensitive enough. It
needs to be more sensitive, like me.

Hey, buddy, you
need a hand up here?

[Jake] I would love a hand.

If this doesn't get that mouse,

nothing's going to.

[Waz speaking]

[Jake speaking]

[Waz speaking]

- [Jake speaking]
- [Waz laughing]

[Trish] That's a gorgeous trout.

[Jeremy] It's
something to eat, Trish.

[Trish] Yep, finally.

[Jeremy] Look at that smile!

- [Exclaims]
- Smiles for dinner.

Midnight moose
lodge has had a win.

[Trish] Mmm-hmm.

[Jeremy] I can't wait to just
feel protein in my stomach.

- [Trish] How beautiful they look.
- [Jeremy] Mmm, mmm, mmm.

- Let's try.
- Give it a try?

Which one you
want to go with first?

Let's do the little guy.

Little guy?

I ain't never ate trout.

So here I am in Montana
eating trout for the first time.

God, that trout's good.

Just having something
in your stomach.

And knowing that you're
getting some source of protein.

Is definitely a morale boost.

- You're on a streak.
- We are.

[Trish] First trout
out her is pretty good,

and I have my partner
to thank for that.

Gonna be my first eyeball.

Gary, you better be proud of me.

It's amazing, but I've grown
quite fond of these little ants.

They're very tasty.

That could also be
'cause I'm starving.

So the hunger has set in,

and I'm getting a
little light-headed.

I call it a spinny day.

There's always gonna
be those really dark times.

Where, you know,
you might feel defeated,

beaten, hungry...

...spinny.

The optimism comes from knowing,

you know, we came up with plans.

The plans are solid.

We need some cooperation
from mother nature.

We have a rabbit.

This is awesome.

Oh, yeah.

I'm feeling, like,
beyond elated.

Let's surprise the other people.

Wes, it's set.

Wanna set another one?

- I'm running out of gas.
- [Wes] All right.

Yo, [bleep] That [bleep]!
We have the damn...

- [Wes and Sarah exclaiming]
- ...Party tonight.

- [Sarah] Whoo!
- [Wes] Trapper Jackson!

Trapper Jackson!

Oh, my god.

[Wes] No, you didn't.

[Sarah] Give me that.

- [Wes] Holy moly.
- [Jermaine] Let's get to cooking.

- [Sarah] Whoo!
- [Wes] Trapper Jackson!

Trapper Jackson!

Oh, my god.

[Wes] No, you didn't.

Put that thing
down, get your knife,

- skin this thing...
- [Sarah] You got it.

- Give me that.
- [Wes] Oh!

[Jermaine] ...Start the fire.

Get out!

You're feeling good.

- Oh, my gosh.
- [Jermaine] We're about to feel good.

Okay, kiss it later.
Clean that thing, baby...

- [Sarah] You got it.
- ...'Cause we are hungry.

I'm feeling beyond elated.

You've been working at
that for damn ten days.

Oh, look how beautiful.

- [Exclaiming]
- It's still warm.

[Jermaine] With the
prize of the rabbit,

I'm feeling accomplished.

I'm feeling like
the black cowboy.

Let's get cooking,
let's start a fire.

Get that war paint going.

- [Sarah] T for trapper.
- [Exclaims]

I'm so glad, not only for
the team that we get to eat.

But for Jermaine.

[Jermaine] Let's
get this party started.

Thank you.

[Wes] After eating
ants and rosehips,

I mean, this is
exactly what we need.

And my body knows it.

[Jermaine] We're searing
to keep the moisture in.

A little wild sage will give a
nice floral aroma to the rabbit.

[Wes] We got some
good stuff coming.

[Jermaine] It's
like a rabbit bacon.

[Sarah] Could not be more
thankful for this amazing feast.

What a relief.

- [Jermaine] Voila!
- Ooh, look at that.

[Jermaine] Literally
after the first bite,

you can feel your body
start to re-energize.

[Sarah] Oh, yeah.

This first taste of rabbit
is just phenomenal.

I eat a lot of rabbit back home,

but for whatever reason,

this rabbit tastes better
than any that I've had before.

Mmm, that's delicious.

[Jermaine] Oh, we're
gonna sleep good tonight.

- [Gabby] You heading that way?
- [Ky] Yeah.

- [Gabby] Good luck.
- [Ky] Thanks.

- [Gabby] You have fun chewing that birch bark.
- [Ky scoffs]

I've developed an abscess
in my tooth and jawbone.

I'd hate to tap due to something
as simple as an infection.

Birch bark, the inner
bark, if you chew on it,

it can help fight
infections like this.

So this is a birch.

I'm just gonna cut off
a bit of the outer bark.

And see if I can find
some of the cambium layer.

To, like, have a
bit of a chew on.

[Narrator] Birch
contains methyl salicylate.

Or wintergreen oil,

which can help reduce
pain and inflammation.

Should be good.

Let's see if it helps.

This tastes really bad.

But almost medicinal.

I have faith in it
helping out the abscess.

[Gabby] So with Ky
not feeling very well,

I'm gonna pick up the slack.

Collecting firewood,
boiling water.

I don't have any
doubts for Ky and I,

but, um, we just have to
keep our eyes on the prize.

Really to get through
this challenge.

[Sara] The wind, I
mean, it's kicking.

[Waz speaking]

[Sara] It's gonna
be a long night.

It's super cold.

[Jake] Ah, [bleep].

[Sara] The cold winds, that's
the one thing I cannot stand.

[Jake speaking]

- [Sara] Me?
- [Jake] Yeah.

[Sara] Absolutely not.

[Coughs] Oh, my god.

5:00 this morning, I
just wanted to go home.

[Jake] Oh, really?
Just that cold?

Oh, yeah.

I mean, it was just the
most miserable night Eve.

I mean, the winds are
gusting at like 15, 20.

It just cuts you to
your core out here.

[Jake] Sara has
been going through it.

I mean, the challenge is
physically and mentally taxing.

I can't fault her for that.

[Crying]

I don't know what
is wrong with me.

My emotions are
all over the place...

...and I don't know why.

My body hates the cold so much,

and it's reacting
to the elevation.

This challenge, it's just hitting
me harder than I was expecting.

Trying to sleep with
wildlife outside your camp.

[Sara speaking]

- Oh, yeah! Oh!
- [Trish exclaiming]

[Narrator] The FSR,
or frozen survival rating,

weighs each group's ability to
complete the challenge as a team.

[Jermaine] Cook
them or eat them raw?

I think sit right here and eat them
until you don't want to anymore.

[Narrator] As hunger sets in...

I really don't like it.

[Spits in disgust]

[Narrator] ...Wes,
Sarah, and Jermaine.

Stepped up their
efforts to secure protein...

Hey, now!

[Narrator] ...And Jermaine'
determination finally paid off.

[Jermaine speaking]

Mmm, that's delicious.

[Narrator] Their team
FSR rises for 55 to 71%.

[Jeremy] My stomach's growling.

[Narrator] Desperate for food...

- Heck yeah.
- [Trish] That's a big old worm.

[Narrator] ...Jeremy and
Trish were taken to the edge.

I'm sitting here thinking, you know, we're
gonna go through the whole challenge.

Not eating anything.

[Narrator] But a new strategy
led to their first food win.

- Trish!
- Look at that little tongue.

[Narrator] ...Causing
their FSR to jump.

From 19 to 48%.

- [Gasps] There's something on there.
- [Gabby] Got it?

[Narrator] After
losing their partner...

[Ky] Wow, we got
food for tonight!

[Narrator] ...Ky and Gabby
scored another big win...

You did good, Ky.

- [Laughing]
- You did real good.

[Narrator] ...But also
suffered a setback.

Got a bit of an
abscess in my jawline.

[Narrator] Their
FSR holds at 59%.

- [Waz] Put some weight on it?
- [Jake] Uh-huh.

[Narrator] Jake, Waz, and Sara
implemented several strategies.

To procure their next meal..

This is the deepest
area I can find.

[Narrator] ...But the punishing
element took a toll on Sara...

I'm so [bleep] cold.

Deep breath for me.

Her heart rate was
extremely elevated.

[Narrator] ...Leading to a drop in
the team's FSR from 78 to 62%.

My emotions are
all over the place.

[Narrator] Unless Sara
can rebound quickly,

her challenge is at risk.

[Waz] Are you okay?

I don't really know what's
wrong with me, I'm just emotional.

[Jake] We're in a
really [bleep] situation.

It's understandable
to be emotional.

It's okay. It's a
brutal challenge.

[Sara] This challenge feels
like being locked in a cooler.

And then having those giant barn
fans blowing on you at all times.

You just have to know that
Waz and I are here 100%.

No, I know, you
guys are excellent,

absolutely excellent.

I have no idea what the
[Bleep] is wrong with me.

[Jake] I hope that Sara's
able to get over this hump.

Because I think
she's a great person,

and I think she's very capable
of doing everything out here.

[Waz] Being emotional's
okay. Everyone's emotional.

I never cry. That's the thing.

- [Waz] I cry all the time.
- I don't.

- I don't like it.
- [Waz] I probably cry more than everyone in this room,

three or four times a week,

in front of my kids, everything.

I don't mind that vulnerability.

It's a good thing. It's human.

It allows you to
process the emotions.

That you're feeling and
going through, which is...

Which is amazing.

But I came into this challenge,

and I said to myself, "I
don't care who I'm with,

I want everyone to make it."

I want everyone to do
everything they want to achieve.

And, like, get everything
out of it they can.

It's a big part of my
personality and character.

Is helping the people around me.

It's something I always
try and teach my kids.

Like, if you have someone
around you that needs help.

And your in the
position to help them,

then that's your duty
and obligation to do that.

She came into
this not confident,

and I want to watch
her walk out of here.

With all the
confidence in the world.

[Sara] I'm not a quitter.
[Bleep], this is hard.

[Jake] Yeah, no it is.

[Waz] Definitely feel
the effects of the altitude.

And the cold air and...

[Sara] I know it's
definitely gotten to me,

just shorter of breath, quicker.

[Katrina] All right,
good morning, guys.

- Hello.
- Hey.

[Katrina] I'm here to
do your vitals, all right?

- [Waz] Okay.
- [Katrina] So let's pull you guys out,

check your vitals, make sure
everything's going all right.

Okay, who's first?

[Katrina] Uh, Sara, go
ahead and come on out.

Sara, over the past few days,

uh, has been exhibiting some
symptoms that I'm really worried about.

Her oxygen saturation,
every time I check it,

it's getting a little
bit lower and lower.

So today, I'm gonna
check her vitals.

And see if they've
improved at all.

[Sara speaking]

[Katrina] So at this point,

[clears throat] You are
running a low-grade fever, okay?

With the trouble, you know, the
complaints you've had as far as, like,

trouble breathing, um,

- you've had a cough.
- You're not tapping me.

[Katrina] Your oxygen
saturation is at 92,

and it's concerning
because at a certain point,

that becomes very
unhealthy, all right?

You know, you also should
not be having a fever, right?

You're in a very
cold environment.

Your fever's at 101.4.

So at this point, I am gonna
have to medically tap you...

[Cries]

...and we're gonna get you
to a lower elevation, okay,

and get you some
supplemental oxygen.

[Sara] Three days, man.

[Katrina] The elevation
affects everybody differently.

Please, I'm...

[Katrina] There's acute
mountain sickness.

Or, um, high-elevation
pulmonary edema,

which I'm really
concerned about.

For your particular
vitals, okay?

[Sara] I don't believe this.

All the stuff the medic
was saying to me,

it went in one ear
and out the other.

I didn't listen to it because
I want to be out here,

and that's how I feel.

Are you, like,
serious? Are you...

We don't have the
right equipment up here.

To be able to look inside
and see if there's actually.

Something going
on with your lung.

I do not feel comfortable
letting you continue, okay?

Sara, this isn't
you failing, babe.

This really isn't.

You've done so well
on this challenge.

You've pushed yourself so hard.

This is not you
failing, this is...

- It's not fair, man.
- [Waz] This is them making sure.

Your kids have a mother
in a week or two weeks.

[Ethan] We want to
get you out of here,

put you on oxygen.

If you want to say
goodbye to the guys.

Yeah, sure.

Bye, guys.

You did well. I'm proud of you.

- [Crying] It's not fair.
- You did good.

You did good. Just be
proud of yourself, all right?

[Sara] Bye, Jake.

[Waz] Your health is the most
important thing out of anything, you know.

That's tough to watch.

I mean, they're
making the right call.

If she's got that kind of fever.

[Waz] Yeah.

You can have a seat right here.

We'll get you some
oxygen right now.

[Katrina] Just try to take some good,
good deep breaths for me, all right?

[Waz] But the kids
need a mother, like...

- [Jake] Well that's the...
- If it's a health thing, it's a health thing.

Yeah, I was so pissed
when I was medically tapped.

But, you know, a
couple weeks later,

it was like, had they not
done that, I would have died.

[Ethan] I'm sorry.

[Sara] I don't think
I should be tapped.

I mean, this meant
everything to me.

I mean, I was gonna
be so proud of myself.

For defeating something
that I absolutely cannot stand,

which is cold weather.

And I mean, I
had three days left.

I came into this challenge not
knowing that I could do an hour.

I did 11 days.

But gosh dammit,

I want that 14 so bad
'cause I know I can now.

I do these challenges
to push myself.

And to show that I
am tougher than I look.

I completely pushed myself
out of my comfort zone,

and I would do it
in a heartbeat again.

Montana did not defeat me.

I guess my body has defeated me.

[Narrator] Sara was given
supplemental oxygen.

And taken to a lower
elevation for treatment,

where she was able
to safely recover.

Before returning home.
