Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 9, Episode 1 - Frozen: Rocky Road Ahead - full transcript

I guess it's low 20s
out right now.

Even under the pelts,
it is really, really cold.

Oh, my god. It is hot.

I feel just absolutel
whipped and helpless.

This is really,
really challenging.

whoa! Massive paw print

They look like bear to me.

They're in such close
proximity to our area.

Well, I think we should
all carry a spear when
we come out.

If my foot falls off,
it falls off. I'm not tapping.

this isn't supposed
to be like this.

joe!

Joe!

You okay?

Joe!

facing some
of the most brutal terrains
on earth...

it's like my flesh
is being burned.

the xl challenge
has pushed the limits
of human endurance

And tested the will to survi
against all odds.

Oh! *bleep*

Oh! *bleep*

now,
12 naked and afraid veter

Take on the most punishing
environment yet,

The rocky mountains, montana

A 3,000-mile wall

Dividing the north american
continent.

Here, 10,000-foot peaks
plunge into frigid valleys

Where blistering winds
drive temperatures
well below zero.

This unrelenting
winter landscape

Hosts some of the deadliest
land predators on earth.

Wolf packs that consume ove
300 pounds of meat
in a single day.

And grizzly bears,
emerging from hibernation,

Ravenous, searching
for their first meal
in months.

Now, these elite survivalist
take their next step toward
becoming legends...

These storms just move
in out of nowhere.

...As they attemp
to endure 14 grueling days I
this ice covered wilderness

It's a whole new mental game.

where the threat
of frostbite and hypothermi
are constant.

three hours in cold
exposure can lead to death,
but out here,

I think you'd be in trouble
in about 20 minutes.

temperature below freezing.
This place is insane.

I hope we can
make it.

can this group
of modern day warriors
conquer the blistering cold

In one of the most
severe environments on earth

It's kinda deep here.
Should've worn my
thigh-high boots.

at an elevation
of 6,300 feet,

Steep, treacherous slopes
collide to form a deep,
frozen gorge.

I have been naked in the snow
once or twice before,

But there is always
alcohol involved.

So, this is a first.

This will be
my last challenge.

I have loved doing
these challenges.
They push me to my limits.

I feel, what better way to
do it than freezing
my ass off?

hello!

hey, how's it going?

Oh, look at you
all dressed up!

-I love the outfit.
Very special.
-Thank you.

- Oh, hey! Another person.
- Oh! Here we go!

Because I absolutely
despise the snow

And I'm putting myself
into this kind of situation
knowing that I hate it,

This challenge will mean
more to me than anything.

here,
in this snowy mountain valle

Jake will be seeking
xl redemption

With xl legend, waz,

And first time
xl challenger, sara.

The wind is the thing for me.

Cuts through the clothes,
all the way to your bones, so.

Listen, we're gonna have to
take these off in here
in a second...

- I know.
- ...So I'm not looking forward
to that, that's for sure.

not at all.

seven miles
to the northeast,

1,500 pound moose
lay claim to the river
that bounds a frozen meadow

Who is that?

Hey, are we crazy or what?

Yeah!

I've done only
warm-weather challenges.

On my previous challenge
in peru,

One of my partners just, um

We had problems.

-Trish, shut up.
Right now.
-No.

I'll never *bleep* shut up.

It did not bring out
the best of me at all.

It brought out the person
that I don't like to see.

I'm hoping to prove
to my new partners that

I am a team player,
it's like, I want

All of us to bond together
and work as a team.

- Hey, guys.
- hey!

- holy crap.
- Amazing to see you out here.

I mean, I've done three other
challenges and every one
of them,

I felt like I've left stuff
on the table.

This challenge here,

I'm going in with the mindset
that I don't wanna leave
nothing on the table.

40-day
xl veteran, trish,

Will be partnered with
rod and jeremy,

Who are both
seeking redemption

From their own xl challenges

- You guys ready to do this?
- You've got to be crazy.

Well, I think anybody out here
has got to be crazy.

ten miles
to the southwest,

Hurricane-strength winds
strip the snow off of froze
mountain top.

I've done this thre
times now.

The hardest thing I ever saw
was the cold.

But nothing like this.
If you can survive this,
you can survive anything.

- Hi!
- How's it going?

good.

nice to see another
crazy person out here.

- Hey!
- is that a third?

It's been more than a year now
since I left montana,
I promised myself,

I'd never be unprepared agai

So, since then,
I've dedicated all my time
and preparation

Just for
cold-weather survival.

Let's see if it paid off.

here,
above a frozen lake,

40-day xl finisher, gabby,

Will combine her experience
with first time
xl challengers,

Joseph and ky.

Could not be happier
to see you two out here.

- Aw, that's so nice.
- That is so nice.

six miles
to the east,

Packs of wolves hunt the woo
below a rocky ridge line.

With this challenge,
it's gonna be a grueling
14 days.

Uh, but I have to make it uh,
because of my south african
medical tap

And then out of ecuador
on a covid tap.

Uh, I need to finish
a challenge.

Yeah, it's killing me.

- no way!
- Hey! What's happening, sarah?

I haven't seen
you since africa.

This is no accident, is it?

- Man, it's good to see you.
- Good to see you, too. Oh!

Mmm.

Oh! We're partnered up again.

- This is gonna be
awesome, man!
- Yeah.

wes and I,
we've been on the challenge
together and I know that

He's going to be on the same
kinda level that I am
in skills.

Also, somebody that I can
learn from as well.

- Ca-caw!
- What! Who's that?

- I'm jermaine.
- Got a cowboy coming
into camp.

Black cowboy!

I put myself in strange
situations all the time
just to test my skillset.

So, the black cowboy
had to come out.
I'm ready to roll.

wes will be seeki
xl redemption

With 40-day xl vet, sarah

And first time
xl challenger, jermaine.

You guys ready to get cold?

I don't think we have much
of a choice now, baby.

let's do it.

- You ready?
- Ready as we're
gonna get, right?

- Let's see what we got!
- Let's get naked.

- Yes! Let's get naked!
- all right!

Oh! Feeling it.

That is lovely right there.

Whoo!

all right.
So long, genitals!

Ah!

All right. Oh, my gosh!
I'm freezing. Hah!

Come on, brother!

- There it is.
- There we go.

Oh, I'm not really enjoying
what I'm feeling right now.

I'm immediately regretting
this cold decision.

oh, my god!

we're gonna need to go,
my feet are getting
frozen quick.

-Come on, let's go.
We'll get it.
-Okay.

- Ooh! That's cold. Argh!
- Yeah.

- All right.
- let's move quick.

- Let's get there
and get the bags.
- Let's get these bags.

each survivalist
has brought one item

And each group has been
provided with a map
of their surrounding area.

- giant...
- The tree right here, I think that's that one over there.

we need to
make our way right over here.

We need to move.
We need to move.

- Like, right now.
- We gotta get out.

- Oh, holy cow! You guys just
wanna step in my footprint.
- you liking the snow?

- ah! *bleep*
-holy cow!

yep, that snow hurts.
It hurts.

- I recognize some resources
down here, I think that's...
- Okay.

- By the lake?
- That's south, that way.

- agreed!
- Watch your step 'cause there's

- Plenty of prickly pear around here.
- - yeah, I saw that.

let's not damage
these feet on day one.

we come over,
look at this area here.

So, it's gonna be heading
straight down here and

We'll hook her out
to the right and...

- we gotta get out of this wind immediately.
- - yeah.

Yeah, we're losing body
heat right now,
so we gotta move.

Yeah. This ground is freezing.

Oh! *bleep* get in!

Okay, huddle up,
huddle up, huddle up!

Let's see where we can
get out of this wind.

- Yeah!
- That's going down.

- Yeah!
- Let's get out of the wind.

- Out of the wind.
- Yeah!

- So, we just head down?
- Yeah.

- Oh, yeah!
- Yeah, have to go that way.

- Let's get down,
let's get down.
- Let's go.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It has been seconds
and I'm already freezing.

- huh!
- Woo! Whoo!

- mmm!
- yeah!

this ground is freezing.

- yeah, I think it's gonna get a lot worse here.
- - oh, yeah.

- holy smokes!
- oh, my god!

- Painful.
- - you want a piggyback?

oh, my god.

yeah, it hurts.

here again,
I am so sorry.

if you go in
the footprints,
it's gonna be a little bit

Better for you, but...

I think it gets better
right up here.

We get under some trees.

the cold is terrifyin
to me.

I mean, the wind's ripping at,
like, 30 miles an hour.

Oh, my god,
I'm in so much pain.

Oh, my god!

Like, I'm in so much pain.

Oh!

oh, man.
This is tough.

Hey, did you guys see
that big ass rock right there?

- Yeah.
- Is that us?

If we get behind it,
we get out of this wind
for a second.

- all right.
- that'll help us.

oh, man!

- we get on the other side of this.
- - yep, we'll be golden.

- We could stop, take a look at the map again.
- - yeah.

formulate a game plan.

- Check this out.
- oh, yeah.

There's like a nest in here.

- All this.
- nice and...

- This is dry.
- Good!

In the bag.

- good find.
- Let's grab all of this out of here.

okay, tell you what, oh!

uh!
Get on the other side of the rock fast.

ahhh!

- This side of the rock.
- Don't have to ask me twice.

let's check that map.

there's the rock.

- And there's
the shelter location.
- We're gonna have to just cut

Across down here 'cause
there's fish, there's water.

- And that's resources for making a decent shelter.
- - absolutely.

- We need, we need to seek
shelter right now.
- that's my priority.

-Let's go do it.
Let's go get fire.
-And lots of firewood.

all right.

if we don't get
out of the wind
and stay warm over a fire,

We're not gonna make
it through this challenge.

- that wind!
- oh!

- whoo!
- Damn.

Hey, watch your footsteps.
Let's double time,
guys, it's cold.

Ah! Whoo!

my feet hurt.

it's needles
I'm walking on.

there's briars
everywhere.

You know there's one thing
with the briars

And there's another thing when
you feet are frozen and you're
stepping through briars.

yeah,
you don't feel them.

Hey, somebody's got
blood on their feet already.

uh-oh!

We gotta get to the tree.
That's it.

thinking about
just kicking it in gear.

You're not getting out
this snow.

there's not a whole
lot of other options.

All right, jeremy.
I'm following you, brother.

- let's go!
- Come on, rod.

I'm coming.

- Just get out of this wind
for a few minutes.
- Yeah.

It gets southside now.

Oh, sun!

- yeah, buddy!
- Oh, give me sun!

Oh! Hey. Look at that.

- what the heck!
-ooh, kidding me?
Come on.

Oh, man!

If I see what I think I see...

- sweet mary and joseph.
- - peanut butter and jelly time.

oh, buddy!

oh!

- Oh, I see something really nice in there.
- - oh!

in these
frigid conditions,

Each team is given
the framework of a shelter.

Looks like an abandoned
shelter up here.

animal pelts.

oh, I see hides.

a fire starter
and a pot for boiling water

- We need to get our torsos covered.
- - yeah.

- Let's get going.
- let's get going.

- okay. Yeah, I do.
- You got a blade there?

I work professionall
as a taxidermist

And the side part of that
is a lot of creating
my own clothing.

- Pretty warm.
- way colder than I am.

- You good?
- Yeah, I'm good.

cool.
The design looks like, it's very native.

it does look
very indigenous.

Pretty sure this
is kind of like

A modified version
of a hogan shelter.

So, the style of shelter that
we have is a hogan-style
shelter

That would've been the type
used by indigenous cultures
in this area

And I am very impressed
with the technology that
they developed.

the sturdy
framework of this modified
winter hogan

Is ideal for holding heavy
amounts of insulation

That can withstand sustaine
periods of wind and snow.

- And it's gonna do just fine
for us, I can tell you that.
- Yeah!

Currently, the top priority
is getting a fire going.

The shelter is not sufficient
as it stands.

The hides are not gonna
do it alone.

So, we're gonna have to get
all three of these components
coming together.

Let's get to fire-making.

Okay.

Guys, we need to get the cut.

- Yeah, sure do. Let's get a...
- Yeah, my feet's getting numb.

shoes,
we gotta get shoes, guys.

I was just looking down
at my feet and they are
turning purple.

- yeah, they are a...
- - shoes are the first and foremost.

yeah, we gotta get
these feet covered.

Yeah, my concern coming into
this challenge was
the circulation in my feet.

- I mean, you can feel how cold they are.
- - yeah, they're cold.

His, his feet
are blue. Purple.

in these extreme
temperatures, frostbite can
occur in minutes.

Water inside the cells
of exposed skin

Forms ice crystals

Which rupture,
killing the cells.

The damaged areas
of the body must be amputate

To prevent infection
from spreading.

- we gotta do something or my feet's...
- - yeah, yeah

yeah, they sure are.
Your toes are not good.

argh! My feet
are gone.

My right one,
I can't even feel it.

*bleep*

If you can see
those trees over there,
those ten-foot high ones?

If I take 'em off the ground
level and we just

- Laid 'em out and make
that a part of the shelter?
- Make a...

- And that's...
- Yeah, yeah.

I can feel it in with
other *bleep* but no,
I think it's perfect.

Yeah, no, no, I'm gonna
hold it tight for you,
so it's easy to chop.

- If I hurt you, then I would
feel really sad.
- Not bounce it.

Chop all the way down there.
It's not gonna hurt me.

you don't have to chop
between my fingers.

beavis and butt-head
right here.

Okay.

gosh, we're so strong!

for this
frozen challenge,

Teams will be evaluated eac
week on a modified scale.

The fsr,
or frozen survival rating,

Weighs each group's ability
to complete the challenge
as a team.

Waz's skills are now legenda

After surviving 60 days
in the amazon.

- whoo!
- Oh, my god!

oh!

jake has proven
himself to be a strong,
hard-working teammate.

timber!

sara's
determination came through
in her last challenge.

I may have a nervous
breakdown on you, okay?

I'm gonna keep
this fire going.

but, her inabilit
to cope with cold,

Could be a huge liability.

Their combined fsr,

Or their chance of reaching
their frozen survival
mission target

Starts at 64%.

- How you doing there, sara?
- Well, it went out
like, twice.

All right. Try this.

like, I've had it lit.

- this is just about
keeping it lit? Yeah.
- twice.

- Yeah.
- yeah.

Let's see if I can get this
damn thing going again.

fire is the most
important thing, so...

This is one
of my top priorities.

Without it,
I'm not gonna make it,
so and I know they won't.

Right now,
I'm highly uncomfortable.

Throughout my previous
challenges, um, I think
the most difficult aspect

Was staying warm.

It's really cold.
Or at least, I am.

And hopefully, it keeps going,
the rain doesn't put it out.

I think one of the things
that I would like to get
out of this challenge is just

Knowing that I can do this.

But we have gotta have a fir

Maybe, I just need
a big pile of magnesium
in here or something.

- you definitely want to have a, a big pile.
- - a bigger pile, yeah.

that'd be sure,
that stuff would kick
that one off.

that's what I'll do.

Come on.

Don't you dare go out.

yeah, sara!

Nice job.

- the fire's good.
- I love that smell.

as soon as you get
that smoke, that first little
smell of that fire.

Always makes me feel good.

working out in cold
climate is miserable, but t
be out in a place like this

With two great partners,
kinda helps with the misery
just a little bit.

Yep, there's a lot of stuff
we need to get done out here

So, we're just trying to mak
as much of a wind-block

As possible.

Take advantage of the daylight
and just trying to pile on
as much as I possibly can.

What are your thoughts
on this?

Be more specific 'cause
I have a lot of thoughts
on this.

Trust me.

Where do you
want me to begin?

about this, uh,
shade that's just come over...

- mmm-hmm.
- - it has made it a lot colder.

yeah, yep.

We have couple of hours
before that sun hits
the ridge.

truth is,
we're not gonna get
everything done.

I feel like if we get
the *bleep* for the floori

As long as we're on top
of those

Branches and enough
to keep the hides from
getting wet, we'll be golden

You look wild, woman.

Yeah, you, right back at you.

all right, I'm gonna
start getting some of these
branches down and, uh...

I'm gonna look for um,
dead wood, see if there's
anything laying around.

- perfect.
- - like, that one to your left.

- Yeah.
- mmm-hmm.

Just a matter of figuring out

Which branches are gonna
be best to

Thread into our shelter.

Oh, it's gonna get really,
really frigid out here.

Yeah.

One thing I forgot up here.

Air's thinner,
you get tired a lot quicker.

Just gotta remember
to slow down.

First time I came out here,

I just went, you know,
pedal to the metal.

You get so fatigued
so quickly and so dehydrated.

You know, you don't
even realize it's happening
before too late.

even though
joe completed his first
and only challenge in montan

It wasn't without
severe difficulties.

I need a minute, I feel sick.

Oh, yeah. I need to sit down,
I'm feeling really,
really lightheaded.

Oh, wow.
That came on suddenly.

ky's track recor
through three challenges

Has proven her arsenal
of primitive skills.

And gabby has also beaten
three different environments

But nothing is punishing
as the frozen wilderness
of montana.

There you go!

having completed
all their previous challenge

The team receives an initia
frozen survival rating

Of 71%.

- there's cat tracks here.
- - yeah?

That's pretty close
to camp.

I think a fire is gonna
be important to deter them.

Looks like they're following
the deer.

wow! Oh, well.
At least, maybe they got
a good meal.

- oh! Hey, guys!
- heya!

we got bones
over here.

And there's definitely
a prevalent game trail
next to us here, too.

oh, there's a lot
of bone.

Still hair on this,

Still flesh on this.

Um, I don't think this
is a victim of the cold.

I think this is a victim
of a predator.

Judging by the amount of

Tracks we see here,
it was likely a lion.

three mountain
lions are known to roam
this area.

These large cats can leap
up to 40 feet on to
unsuspecting prey.

There's, there's so many
tracks through this valley,

Um, right here by the pond.

It's concerning.

buckle up 'cause
it's about to get chilly.

I might go around here
just for a minute.

It's, this is all junipers.

I mean, sure as hell ain't
gonna keep the rain out

Unless we had
it ten feet thick.

Juniper is really sparsy.

So, we're trying it right now
and use it for wind break.

As you can see, it's like,
ain't much wind breaking that.

So, we gotta get a lot of it.

Yeah, make it out here,

You gotta stop the wind.

jermaine's
ingenuity helped his team
survive 44-degree temperatur

In the smoky mountains.

We did it.

complimented
by sarah's elite
taxidermy skills,

Which are invaluable
for crafting clothing
from pelts.

I'm gonna get these boys
all toasty warm.

wes brings prove
hunting skills to the team.

But has been unable
to complete his last
two challenges.

the team begins
with a projected group
success rate

Of 56%.

Whoo!

my feet
are frozen, jermaine.

Frozen.

Ooh!

I'm shivering a lot.

- gotta get by a fire.
- - yep.

I can't
feel my feet.

- No, I can't either.
- I don't wanna go hypothermic.

yeah, boys.
Get yourselves in here if you need to warm up.

hypothermia occur
when the body's core
temperature falls

Below 95 degrees.

Symptoms begin with
shivering and increased
heart rate.

But as the body's temperatur
continues to drop,

The heart actually slows
resulting in loss
of consciousness

And organ failure.

I mean, these hides
are really important
to the survival challenge.

You can have
an amazing shelter,
you can have a good fire,

But if you do not
have proper insulation,

Which comes from pelts,
in this kind of environment,
you will die.

Look at that discolor.

If my feet wasn't cold,
I'd be 100% right now.

The cold's mad at me,
but my foot's the one
that's gonna,

It's gonna take it the worse.

guys, we don't have
a lot of

Sinew up here,
but I'm gonna take this off.

Hand me the knife.
I gotta cut.

- I'll just make a quick cut.
- mmm-hmm.

trish
has successfully completed
two brutal challenges,

Including 40 tumultuous day
in the amazon.

- Whoo!
- wow, get it, girl.

Don't hug me when
it's mouth is open.

rod is
a proven hunter.

But his recent 40-day
challenge was cut short
by a medical evacuation.

Jeremy has proven himself
on one challenge.

But quit on two others

Including his previous
xl attempt in africa.

As a result, the likelihood
of them completing
the challenge as a team,

Is only 47%.

Well, that tree right there
would be easy to cut down.

I can get up above it.
Those would be good
boughs to lay on.

that's probably
a good idea.

We need to cut something big
so we don't have to keep

Running back up and down
this hill.

Right. Let me try
and get back up the hill.

you get one big
giant one, we'll get
some good boughs.

We have very limited amount
of time to get material to put
around our shelter.

Hopefully, it will be
okay tonight.

Ugh!

Don't fall.

- huh?
- I said, don't fall.

*bleep*

yep, this is all
gonna be loose.

Oh! Argh! Ugh!

Oh, crap!

oh! Argh! Ugh!

this is terrible.
This bank is so dangerous.

I've had back issues
where if I

Stand up too quick or I twis
or turn or if I slip
on something,

It will hurt my lower back.

And, you know, that makes
it difficult 'cause if I get
hurt or injured,

I'm gone.

That's a really poor way
to start off a challenge.

But hopefully, after a day
or two, my back
won't hurt anymore.

oh, oh, oh, oh!

- Timber, rod. Timber!
- Timber!

you can feel
that temperature
dropping already, can't you?

- uh-huh. Indeed.
- didn't take much.

you guys, what're you seeing?
What do we need the most?

um, everything.

- Everything.
- - it is a touch drafty inside.

I think, maybe if I keep
bringing you leafy boughs
that you can

Thread on the inside,
would that work?

- yeah, you want me to sit inside and keep going?
- - yeah, maybe.

Yep, I can. Sounds good.

This location presents
a whole new set of challenges.

This wind, it's ferocious.

But thankfully,
we have a wind being blocked
by rock on one side.

You got it, joe.

- I can smell it.
- it's a fire.

- it feels good,
though. Doesn't it?
- Oh, indeed!

Here, I'll just give you some
more branches.

- just keep adding small little...
- I do.

at least we can regulate
the temperature that way
and the height.

I mean, we have to get just
a little bit bigger. I'm gonna
come up through this hole.

okay.

takes about a million
juniper branches to fill
this sucker in.

You put one layer on
and the wind cuts right
through, you just gotta do

Multi stacks.

Takes forever.

yoo!

- woo!
- There is a change
in the air.

temperature's dropping
the sun's starting to go dow
and you can feel it.

It's changing

Five degrees every
five minutes.

It's, it's starting to become
freezing now.

- It's getting chilly, right?
- It's getting chilly.

You know, first day,
you start your shelter

And you get it going as much
as you have time for.

And that's about the stage
where we're at right now.

Our shelter's okay.

Uh, but it's not good
by any means.
It's gonna take another

Day or two

To really get it tightened up.

So, it's gonna be
a cold night.

We know night one sucks.

hey, rod.

I'm doing what I can,
man, my feet are gone.

My right one,
I can't even feel it.

My feet kill me every single
time I step outside.

But I don't wanna sit
in a shelter 14 days.

Rod, I think we need to get
what you got cut
and bring it back.

- okay.
- We gotta get firewood.

- Yep, okay. Sounds good.
- like, immediately.

The sun is setting

And it took us a little
longer to make sure
our shoes are ready to go.

But there's just so much
to do on the first night.

So many things that need
to be done that are priority

The whole shelter's not
covered in yet and uh,

We need to get some
firewood, but, uh,

We have very limited
amount of time.

I thought about it 'cause
that's not doing nothing.

- It's not doing nothing
for us. No.
- No, it sure isn't.

I mean, this shelter's big
enough that, you know,
we could have

Another three or four
people in it.

And so, that's a lot of roo
to have to heat.

So, we're gonna take one wal
basically almost down
and move that in,

So we have a lean-to shelte
and a wind-block

On the north side

And we're gonna try to make
it so we have less space
to heat,

So we can stay warm
without spending
too much energy.

This is not good.

I'm gonna tell
you right now,

- We're gonna be
in trouble tonight.
- Yep.

- I don't think we'll all be sleeping very much anyway.
- - no.

It's gonna be
a brutal night.

oh, yes!
That is gonna feel amazing.

Cook my feet, bitch.

oh, god!
It's almost worse when your feet start defrosting

- 'cause then you realize how much it sucks, again.
- - how much they hurt?

- Oh, my gosh.
I cut my toe open.
-oh, my!

I told you you needed
to check the bottom
of your feet.

ah.

- what is that?
- That is like half of my toe's gone.

that's half
his *bleep* toe.

my feet are
really banged up.

And...

I am feeling really,
genuinely concerned

Just because

You know,
we're out here on ice

And snow and I've now got
these open holes in the bottom
of my feet,

So I need to be careful.

Don't wanna have to tap
out because of my feet.

- there's literally ice on the floor on our shelter.
- - uh-huh!

I feel like
the temperature's dropped
20 degrees.

This ground's gonna suck
the heat out of us.

yeah.

oh, I'm shaking.

Getting super cold.

No, not... No. I'm gonna
make it through the night.

just have to power
through this night of misery

it's too cold.

Make sure there
aren't any bears.

Okay, okay. Oh, sharp!

- you look there.
- okay. This.

- *bleep*
-this.

trying to get
warm again.

it's night one.
I'm finishing up my hat.

It's been a pretty good
night so far.

We took fire shifts,

Um, at the moment,
ky and joe are sleeping.

I'm feeling pretty competen
at this point.

If we can make
this shelter stronger

And continue to work together,
we're gonna be in good shape.

- it's started to refreeze.
- - yeah.

that's, that's...

- what's starting to refreeze?
- - our water.

are you kidding me?

Wow.

so, how're you feeling
right now?

I'm starting
to shiver.

once we have boots,
that's gonna be another
gamechanger.

We gotta figure it out

'cause

It's about to get really cold.

- I'm starting to shiver.
- are you?

it's cold.

Well, that wind is like
45 mile-an-hour gusts.

this shelter sucks.

this is probably
the worst shelter I've ever
been in.

- it is the worst I've been.
- - the worst one.

- we ain't trapping any heat in this damn thing.
- - no.

- I hope we have enough firewood for tonight.
- - *bleep*

That's not good.

I don't know how this
is gonna work.

oh, my god!
It's super cold.
I'm freezing.

your back's so cold.

I'm freezing.

we survived the night.

We're gonna get this shelter
insulated up a little bit
better than it is.

We did as much as we
could yesterday, but...

It needs more.
We need lots more trees.
I was just looking at it.

yeah, the thing
that sucks is all the *bleep*
that we've

Trapped down in the next
couple days starts drying up.

So, it is gonna be
just non-stop.

I'm gonna go do
some work.

- is my face swollen?
- huh?

is my face swollen?

- yeah, you look a little bit swollen.
- Yeah, I can feel it.

Well, last night
was absolutely horrible.

Um, my face looks like I got
into a fight with mike tyson.

Pelts are wonderful.

Keep you warm,
but I'm allergic to them.

We got a nice fire, though.

How are your feet feeling?

There's just like from them,
kinda swelling up
and splitting

Like, they were oozing
a little bit.

And then, they stuck
together like this.

- From the ooze.
- oh, no!

I don't know how
hopeful I'm gonna be today,
but I'm gonna try.

it's concerning.

okay, I'm gonna get up and go out.
Trish, don't let me step on your feet.

- you're getting
firewood or floor? Okay.
- firewood.

-How you feeling?
You feel good?
-Useless.

- You? Look at me.
- Yeah.

out there like
a crutch to the team,
sitting in a shelter,

And tending to my feet.

I mean, that's not what
I came here to do.

It just feels like I'm

Not contributing and...

I'm not liking that at all.

we need a pot of snow
and I'm too cold to get up
and go get it.

I'm fixing to get some.

- Here, I'll get you some.
- You gonna grab it?

- Here I'll get it.
- Just gonna get it
right there.

- Or you can get it over there.
- I'm gonna get fresh snow.

- pack it in tight, so it's...
- Okay.

you know, even though
my back right now is right
around probably a six in pai

If their limitation tells
them, "my feet hurt,
I need to stop,"

I respect that.
They need to stop.

When I can,
I'm gonna do whatever
I can to help the team.

I feel rain.

*bleep*

- I definitely feel rain.
- I just felt it, too.

if it starts raining,
it's gonna suck.

If we're wet
and our beds are wet,

That's gonna be miserable.

that ain't
gonna be miserable,

It's gonna be a hypothermic
mid-tap.

morning of day two!

We made it. I think if that's
our hardest night, then
we're gonna be okay.

- We got this.
- But then, I've also

Quite often had surprises
on day nine!

So, then, day 12.
so, I'm not gonna get
too cocky just yet.

You know, this is an ideal
location for us

With the wind being blocked
by rock on one side.

I think we have
a good foundation,

Um, but, the next few days
we're gonna have to work
to fortify that.

ah!

There's some weather
coming in, guys.

great.

like, if it
comes this way,

Which...

That is the wind direction,
we're gonna get some rain.

Okay.

Yeah, we've gotta, um,
put some stuff on our shelter.

If it's a light shower...

- uh-huh.
- ...We'll get drizzled on,
but if it's sustained,

- We're in trouble.
- right.

- It's cold.
- All right, I'm gonna get as
many little boughs as I can.

- okay.
-Just and when...
We just need to

Just bump up that top.

- it's raining.
- is it?

yeah, it's starting
to rain, guys.

Oh, gotta get wood.

*bleep*

I'm cold. Gotta push
mentally.

Okay.

That's gonna do it.

I'm shivering a lot, dude.

Oh, I gotta get inside.

*bleep*

I'm freezing right now.

Just making sure

I don't go hypothermic.

But I feel like I'm about to,
so I'm just getting warm.

you doing good in there?

just can't stop
the shivering.

- I can't like shake it,
you know what I mean?
- Yeah.

- I mean, I'm definitely
pre-hypothermic.
- Yeah.

if...

You don't get warm
and it goes into hypothermia,
you are out of here?

Yeah.

I would really hate
to lose jermaine.

But if he goes
into hypothermia,

This challenge
is over for him.

It's just over.

There's no coming back
from that.

I am scared right now, dude.

this is really bad.

Mmm-hmm.
Yeah, it's a good one.

jermaine's getting
really cold.

He's shivering uncontrollabl

So, I'm gonna keep a close e
on that, make sure he's
the guy next to the fire.

And we'll see if we can't
turn that situation around
real quick.

It's nice and hot.

Nice and hot.

I think I'm getting better.
My hands aren't shaking like they were.

One thing I don't wanna
do is get medically tapped.

I'm trying to just get warm
'cause once I get my core up,

Then uh,

It should be all right.

Crazy challenge.

Ridiculous, yeah.

how's it looking? Did...

I feel like we can
get a heap on there
quite quickly, huh?

yeah, I'm filling
a lot of gaps inside here
at the moment.

perfect!

I got a lot of, um,
thicker stuff off that
last one.

perfect.

is it just me or is it
colder today than
it was yesterday?

it's much, much colder
today than it was yesterday.

this is so much harder
to do when you're weak.

I am noticeably weaker today.

I know my blood sugar's
definitely down.

I mean, even standing up,

I got a momentary period
of dizziness.

I promised this team
I would give them
everything I have.

No matter what.

One step at a time.

Don't think about the day.

Right here.
This is what's important.

joseph, you should
just rest.

Honestly, I can't have you
falling down on us.

- Just drop that, rest. Please.
- I understand.

- I'm coming up.
- all right.

- You get it?
- yes.

All right.

We need you.

like, physically, I feel drained.
Right now, I'm ready for a nap.

Take, uh, quite a bit
of water in and just rest

For a little bit to
kinda recoup a little.

joe, how
you feeling, man?

I just started feeling
nauseous, that's why I had
to lay down quick.

oh, I understand.

- ooh.
Excuse me. Yeah.
-ooh. You okay?

what's that?

- uh, joe's a little nauseous in here.
- - joe is?

- yeah.
- Yeah, it's just that level of dehydration, I know it.

I just, yeah it's a prime
characteristic of it.

in cold, dry air
sweat evaporates
almost instantaneously,

Making hydration levels
hard to track.

In addition,
heart rates elevate

To keep internal body
temperatures up,
which accelerates dehydratio

try and stay
hydrated, joe.

We're gonna finish
this together.

rod, do you need
to come in and warm up?

No, let me keep going.

I'm afraid if I stop, I'm not
gonna be able to stand
back up.

yeah.
I understand that.

Rod's a hard worker.

Been really trying hard
to pull for the team.

He's definitely trying to make
sure that we'll be,
we'll be okay tonight.

- Let me just sit these right here.
- - yeah.

- rod, why don't you come in and take a break?
- I got this last one.

Okay.

Guys, you think that's enough
wood for tonight?

- Or you think we need more?
- No, I think, I think, you did
an amazing job down there.

- I think we're good, rod.
- - I think we're okay.

okay.
And my back's killing me.

I appreciate it.

I appreciate your commitment
to our team.

- Come on, rodney. Get in here.
- okay.

Get your tail in here
and warm up.

- How's your feet feeling?
All right, well, get in here.
-they're frozen. Okay.

- Listen to your team.
- But once I get in,
I ain't coming back out.

that's all right.
That's all right.

- oh, it's always easy just to stay...
- little bursts

Of rod are better than

Big bursts of rod and then,
he leaves 'cause
he's hypothermic.

I doubt I'll leave 'cause
I'm hypothermic.

If I leave,
it's 'cause of my back.

I took a risk on day one

Climbed up that hillside
to cut those trees down and
I'm paying the price for it

I can deal with it.

And I've been dealing
with it, you know,

It's one of those things that

I don't know if it's gonna
get better, if it's gonna
get worse.

And if it drags out,
I've gotta go get
attention for it.

- you all right, rod?
- Bit hurt.

You need to just take a break,
rod, you need to
get off your back,

Lay down,

Let me and trish handle this.

We got ya!

It sucks.

Rod is a huge part
of this team.

I know he's hurt
and he's in pain.

I can see he don't wanna
go home.

But he's contemplating it.

-Hey, I need you.
Trish needs you.
-Yeah.
