Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 8, Episode 9 - A Gathering Swarm - full transcript

[bird screeching]

[snake hissing]

[coughing]

Try leaving now.

All right.

What a long walk.

Haven't trekked in a while.

I need a good drink
of water...

And got to have a good pot
of boil it in.

[coughing]

I'm tough enough, though.
I got to see it through.

Ooh.

Cool body temperature down.
Just gotta cool body
temperature.

See if that's an
ubos tree.

Please be the ubos tree.

Ha-ha.

Ubos tree.

I can drink this tonic.

It'll nullify anything
in my stomach that might be
bad from the water.

It's like an antibacterial.

It'll... Actually purifies
everything in your stomach.

Any nasties in there
won't survive with this in it.

See that?
Nice purplely juice.

That's what I want.

Tastes like hell.

Every ounce
of ubos tonic I drink,

Eight ounces of river water
doing nothing to it.

It's a game changer, really.

I left my area thinking maybe
I'd find greener pastures,

And I'm not sure

If this was
the right decision now.

If I don't come across
something soon,

I'm in trouble.

Someone needs to stop Clearway Law.
Public shouldn't leave reviews for lawyers.

[narrator] two miles south..

- [steven] good luck, babe.
- [amber] crush it.

[narrator] ...Steven and amb
await ej's return.

And hope their distant fishi
hole continues to provide.

[steven] we're not gonna
make it to 60 days
eating really small fish.

Now ej's not here anymore.

It's definitely different
without him, miss him, but
I hope he finds what he need

It's me and amber now.

We got to get food on the
table, and that means catchi
all the dang fish we can.

We got to do
what we do to survive.

[amber] damn, they keep
taking my bait.

[steven] thinking
ej was at least good luck
to have around.

I haven't gotten a bite yet.

Gotcha.

- Steven?
- Yeah.

[amber] how are you doing,
brother?

[steven] I literally have
not had a single bite today.

[amber] even though
steven and I can go
guarantee and get fish.

Got four.

That walk is really hard
on us.

It's about a mile
and a half to two miles

And we are really depleted
right now.

We've got about two weeks le
on this challenge.

I'm thinking, how much
can my body take of this?

I still haven't even
gotten a bite.
This is ridiculous.

I'm gonna get you.

I'm gonna get you,
you big horse.

First bite.

First real bite.

[amber] that is awesome.

[steven] got a little oscar.

[amber] lob enough to grill to
and have a boil.

- What do you think?
- [steven] oh, yeah.

We need the calories.

[narrator]
three miles north...

[waz] the jerky
has dried up a lot faster
than I thought as well.

[matt] right now,
the moisture is out of it.

It is officially preserved.

[narrator]
dan's perfect shot...

[dan] nailed him. Oh.

[narrator]
...Landed the biggest
food win of the challenge.

Oh, my heart is racing
right now.

Good shooting, buddy.

[narrator] ...And gave
a huge boost to their
new 60 day goal.

[dan] this is exactly, exactly
what I needed moving forward.

What we all needed.
So good.

[bird screeching]

How do you think
that tongue's gonna taste?

Hahaha.

It's gonna be mind blowing
for you.

Today, I get to introduce
the guys to one of my little
favorite gems I found,

And that is the delicacy
of a crocodilian tongue.

This should do the trick.

I'm gonna make
a quick steam rack

For a couple of pieces
of meat we have left.

So, I think
we're basically just gonna
put these two in the pot

With some of these
smaller sticks on top.

Put it like an inch
of water below it

And have it, steam it
into tasty, gooey goodness.

A couple of days ago,

I'm standing there looking o

Into the unknown
from 40 to 60.

Not totally sure that my bod
is gonna be able to make it

So just to have
a score like this.

It's incredible.

It makes me feel a lot
better about my decision

To stay here
for the long haul.

[matt] that's a jelly roll.
Here's the tongue.

[dan] that looks good.

[matt] and with these
two sitting like that
over the water,

They're only gonna
get cooked by steam,

Pure moisture and heat.

Oh, yeah.
She's starting to steam now.

All right, I'm gonna
pull her out and set her
on the table for now.

- [dan] thanks, man.
- [matt] careful.

[waz] that is ridiculous.

That looks incredible.

[matt] we're three
hungry dudes

And we're not small guys,

So we're gonna probably
put a hurting on this meat,

And I would say it's maybe
gonna last for two days.

[waz] you can see the moisture
still bubbling away inside it.

[matt] that jelly roll
is gonna be prime time.

[dan] ooh, it really
softened it up.

Yeah, it's just dripping.

[waz] right now,
we're getting
a lot of fat in us.

A lot of protein in us.

We really are setting
ourselves up for success

For the next part
of this journey.

Try it out.

- [dan] it's really good
and unique.
- [matt] good, right?

That's smokiness
on the outside

Is instantly contrasted
by that sweetness
of the tongue.

There's nothing wrong
about that.

[dan] this is next level
delicious.

Hmm.

Oh, my god. It's so good.
So good.

[waz] good job, guys.
We didn't waste
a single bit of this.

[matt] not one little slab
of meat or anything.

Survival can be delicious.

This is gourmet survival.

[bird screeching]

[snake hissing]

Hmm.

The hell?
It's like these things are
already cut down...

Pretty significant.

People.

Hello.

Hey.

I know that guy.

Am I glad to see you guys!

Are you alone?

Yeah, it's just me.

Oh, get over here,
you son of a bitch.

[dan] ej snyder,
godfather of naked and afrai

Just traipses
through the jungle
right into our shelter.

Blows my mind.

[matt] how long
you been walking?

About three hours or so.

- It's been a bit.
- No way.

- Hey, don't come
without presents.
- Oh.

Have yourself
some caiman jerky, friend.

You got here just in time.

I'm so happy.

All I've been eating is fish.

Ej is looking rough.

This guy needs some water,
and this guy needs some food.

- Sit down
on the bench there.
- Whoa.

Put your feet up.

[ej] look what you guys
got going on here.

[dan] luxury.

[ej] wow.

[dan] these guys on day 39,

They've decided,
you know what,

They're like,
we ain't done yet.

[ej] congratulations
for making 40.

Thanks, buddy.
I appreciate it.

[ej] even sign on to go 60.

[dan] yeah. We had some
unfinished business out here.

The sweet part's really gonna
come when you finish day 60

- And get that sense
of accomplishment.
- [ej] yeah.

No uneasy feat.

Proud of you guys.

Dan and waz, they made
their 40 and they decided
to stay 60.

That does my heart good.

We're sort of passing
the torch on to others

To become the next generation
of legends.

[waz] so, what made you
venture off on your own?

[ej] I was trying to find
some other hunting grounds.

Find food for my team.

I was with steven and amber
in an abandoned camp
with a big tree knocked over.

[matt] okay.
That was my old camp.

It's been nice.
There's a creek.

Oh, yeah.
The magic fishing hole?

[ej] yeah, it's a walk.

I didn't think
we could sustain every day
walking two miles

And walking down there,

I got on the hunt.

I told those guys that
I would be a couple of days.

I took a big gamble.

It almost killed me.

But when I got here, I knew
I made the right move.

Once I get my strength up,

'cause that was a hell
of a walk,

I want to get out here
and see what there is to hun

To get a big score
for amber and steven.

I sleep well on the ground,
so I won't need much room.

[dan] we definitely
have space for you.

I appreciate this.

- That's all good.
- [ej] yeah.

[steven] think I might grab
my fish and get over there.

- [amber] to the other side?
- Yeah.

I don't think
I've done that yet.

What is this?

Are those lemons?

Oh, my god.

Found some fruit back here.

There's these fruits, right?
With seed pods.

They look like little lemons.

And sure enough,
they're everywhere.

And we've never had these.

Like this is
a brand new food source.

[amber] let me see.

[gasps]

He brought us all this fruit.
And I'm like, this is amazing.

That has so much
vitamin c in it,

And it will give us
so much energy.

We really need the substanc
going on these long treks
like this.

Excited to try it.

[steven] yeah.

Are they gonna be fine
like that?

Yeah. I'm gonna head out,
see if they...

See if a turkey wants to play.

- Good luck, buddy.
- All right. Thanks, buddy.

[ej] see you, man.

Bring us home some bird.

He is a savage.

[matt] I'm headed out
on the hunt right now.

Sun's getting a little
lower in the sky

And a little magic in the air.

I'm going to hunt
one of these horned
screamers yet again,

Not to feed myself.

It's to feed ej because
it kind of hurts my soul
a little bit knowing

That he's had
such a rough struggle.

[bird screeching]

[matt] I'm trying to do
something a little different

Instead of finding
a spot to sit,

I found a horned screamer
to sneak up on.

I've watched these birds.

As the sun goes down,
they're getting ready
to go to their roost.

This bird is only gonna be
in this tree
for a few minutes.

They are very, very hard
to get close to and very hard
to get a shot at.

So, as I'm sneaking up,
I am slow, but yet I am fast.

[matt] yeah, buddy.

Come on.

Oh.

Absolutely incredible.

[grunting]

[panting]

Oh, god.
That's beautiful.

Look at the size of this bird.

That's a spur right there.

Oh.

It's a big bird. All right.

Let's get to camp.

I can't wait to frickin'
announce to ej that
his hunger strike's over.

[amber] ah.

[steven] home.
Home sweet home, baby.

Yes.

- You okay?
- Oh, yeah.

The hikes are long.

Jungle walking ain't walking
on a sidewalk.

It's thick and it's arduous

And we're tired.

It's... It's been a long day

And we've still got
to cook dinner.

Nothing's easy out here.

Cool. New fruit.

I remember researching it.

I don't remember
what it's called.

weaving these in, dan?

[dan] well, so these ones
we're putting
in groups of three

And then just lash them
to each other and put them up.

Got it.

[waz] so basically,
what I've gotta find

Is about probably 60
of these size pieces

For floor slats
for the treehouse and
that's all framed up,

We just need to put
some slats down

And put a ladder in and the
we can start using it.

So, they need to be
about eight feet,

Probably about another foot
above my hand.

So, this one's a good size.

I'll just take these back
and see how we do.

Basically, one of those
will be strong enough

To hold someone standing on it
without breaking,

It would be a nice place
to just overlook the fishing.

We've had a few birds come
and land in here recently,

So I might have me
a bit of a blind.

know how to rock it out here,

But they are skinny as hell

[matt] so, guys,
ej did find us

And I wanna let you know when
he showed up he was rough.

I mean, he was throwing up.
He was puking.

He was looking like hell.

He's had a rough time
this whole time.

But he's been feeling
his age on this one

And he's been telling me that.

He really wanted to come.
He wanted to make this trip.

It was important to him,
but we talked him out of it.

But ej's message to us
is that he's got two fellow
family members out here.

- Yeah.
- We need to bring them back.

You guys are willing
to go back with us?

We did the journey
just for you guys.

[waz] well, actually,
I know this place,
I used to camp here.

I've been using
that fishing hole, an hour's
walk away, right?

Yeah, that's a...
That's a bit of a walk.

-Yeah.
-And we've got...
We've got a fishing dock

You guys are gonna love,
that's about 30 seconds
walk from our shelter.

[matt] our place, it is closer
to extraction.

- It's got open water.
- Yeah.

We've gotten
three horned screamers,

Two anteaters, a brushtail
freaking tree rat.

- Oh.
- A six and a half foot caiman.

[amber] no.

It sounds like y'all
been slaying some meat.

[amber] I'm proud of ej.

And because of him,
we have people

Who want us to come
and join their team

In an area
that's better than ours.

I am immediately sold.

I mean, I love your spot.

- I want to check out
your spot.
- I've lived in both.

And let me tell you,
you're not gonna be...

You're not gonna be
disappointed to come back.

We got a caiman line set up,
but we'll grab it on way out.

- Let's do it, man.
- All right.

That's my fellow
seven legends, man.

I mean, he's a brother.
He's family.

You know, we've already been
through a lot together.

Waz and dan,
I'm excited to work with hi

And that they're here
for taking on 60 with us.

I respect that thoroughly.

I feel blessed to be with
a group of amazing people.

This is when we can, you kno
utilize all of our skills

And keep ourselves
surviving out here.

- Good bye, camp.
- Bye, camp.

Thank you for providing.

[ej] just gathering up
a few poles.

I'm not sure
what the consensus
is gonna be for sleeping,

But always use plenty of woo
for anything.

We chop it up for firewood,
building stuff,

But we'll just gonna bring
in a whole bunch of poles.

So, we have them.

The boys took off
to go get my team,
kind of nervous feeling,

You know, like a dad
waiting for his kid

To come back from college
for the first time.

Definitely make sure I have
a fresh pot of boiling water

Ready to go
when they get here.

In the meantime, I'm gonna get
stuff ready here.

I'm gonna do my best
to make sure
when they get here,

They're gonna feel like
they're at home.

We're adding two more people.
Now we're gonna have six.

So, anything I could do,

No matter how minor it seems
or small, it's a big deal.

Look.

[ej grunting]

Oh, my gosh.
That's a lot.

That's heavy.

[matt] personally,
I'm glad ej didn't come.
This is rough.

If he tried to push himself
on this, this could be
the end, you know.

He wouldn't have made it
two directions in one day.

I'm glad he was...
He was happy to let us
take the walk, you know.

In comparison
to the other ones.

What do you... How do you
rate this one?

[amber] I would say this
is the hardest challenge
I've ever been on.

- Hands down.
- Yeah, really?

It's my fifth challenge,
and the most extreme
environment right here.

[steven] the camungo cantina.

[amber] this is beautiful.

[waz] mr. Ej,
we found your friends.

[steven] hey, buddy.

- Hey, guys.
- Yeah.

That's a new man right there.

We're so happy.

Oh, we were so worried
about you, brother.

- Okay.
- I'm so happy.

Oh, my god.

So glad you made it safe.

We're all together now.

[amber] this is beautiful.

Oh, my gosh.
Look at the dock.

[steven] very cool.

It's the last stretch, man.

This is it?
We're all family now.

- Yeah.
- Two weeks of fam.

- Let's go for a swing.
- Yeah. Set it up there.

And this is, like, amazing.

What a great camp.

- You guys are so cool.
- Very cool, man.

- Do you like it?
- I love it, dude.

They are just floored.

Couldn't have sold them
on any more points
than what we did.

I mean, I think they realize
this was the right move.

All right. We're gonna let you
start thinking about dinner.

We start doing firewood.

Firewood's good.

Yeah, man. I'll go get
a heart of palm for us.

- I'll come and chop.
- Yeah.

[amber] I'm excited to try it.

[matt] we just made
this long trek,

And the easiest way to get

A thousands of calories
right now

Is to go get a heart of palm.

We know if we get a big one

We have the potential
to actually give everyone
a full stomach tonight.

And out here,
a full stomach is huge.

Good. Yep.

She's wobbling.

[matt] ho, ho, ho.

Ho!

Oh, that's the good stuff.

Let's just say
you will not be able
to eat all of it.

I'm gonna try.

- [amber] cheers, brothers.
- [dan] cheers.

Food's where you find it.

- It is incredible.
- Yeah, it's good.

Carbs, sugars.

[amber] thanks
for doing that, guys.

For sure.

[amber] oh, my gosh.
That was so much easier.

We really needed a break
from the two mile walk
every day.

[steven] it feels so
good to finally be,
like, all together.

Final group.

That's pivotal moments.

We're all looking
at the same finish line,

Determined to conquer
the impossible.

60 day challenge
in the hardest environment
on the planet.

That's what makes
legends legendary.

It's so cool. I'm so glad
we're all here together.

I'm the last woman standing
which is insane.

I was devastated last year
being pulled in louisiana
on the legend challenge.

But I know I can do this.

This is it, guys.

I started off as a fan,

And now
I'm in a legend challenge

Sitting among legends.

But not only that,
this is my home.

This is where I started
and where I started building

And to be able to,
like provide for everyone

And be on par
with everyone out here

Is kind of blowing
my ♪bleep♪ mind.

[steven] we're finally all
together as a family and...

And be able to use
all our skills together
and accomplish awesome things.

Let's kick this
amazon's ass together.

[matt] yay!

[amber] can we talk
about bed situation?

[waz] we'll show you
what we got right now.

That's matt.

This is dan,
and I'm over this side.

[dan] it's gonna be cramped.

[amber] okay.
There's four beds here
and there's six people.

How is this gonna work out?

[matt] we got that treehouse
we started.

[dan] it can totally be
altered or changed,
however we find practical.

[amber] yeah,
there's more room.

Steven and I can go
over there.

I built one here once
before eight years ago, so.

Skull crusher construction
company, here we go.

Adding two more to the trib

Means we're gonna
have to expand.

We're gonna get all togethe
as a team,

Kind of divide and conquer

And shore up this treehouse
that waz started.

Legends, we just roll.

[steven] what I was thinking
is just like those suspension
beds that we have in there.

[narrator] to modify
the existing platform,

The group plans to build
an a-frame roof

Covered with palms
above the upper level

And two elevated beds
for the lower level.

Materials are the first step.

What do we need other
than cordage and palm?

A whole bunch of palms.

- You can bring all of it over.
- Perfect. Go, team.

[waz] matt, ej and I
are gonna chop one
of the cordage trees down.

It's a bit of a labor
intensive job.

Right here. There she goes.
Boom.

[matt] then we have to peel
the outside layer of bark,

Which is about
half inch thick.

That's backbreaking work.

The cordage we're looking
for as the inside layer

Of that of that outside bark
of the tree.

[ej] we're doing more
stripping than I used
to in my single days.

[matt] this would be
enough for two beds.

[dan] we started getting
all our materials ready
for bedding and lashing,

Roofing supplies
for framework.

[steven] now we're gonna
make two beds.

One for me, one for amber.

[matt] never count out
the importance of comfort.

Without a doubt,
building out here

Is one of the probably
most calorie-

Demanding things you can do.

But steven and amber,
at this point,
they've had a rough go.

So, if we're spending
the calories for them,
I'll be happy to do so.

[ej] we can just
start on the roof.

It's gonna take two
of us to tie these...

- [waz] yeah.
- ...Damn roofs on.

The second one.

This one's kind
of short, but...

Keep it coming.
I'll take what I can get.

[ej] all right.

Treehouse is going
pretty well.

The bones are there.

Amber and I are doing
pretty good on the roof.

Looking pretty good.

We've still got to put
some walls up,

Strap down a ladder,

And then it should be ready
to go.

But at least for now,
the riverside inn
is open for business.

Looking like a treehouse.

Looking like a home.

[steven] all right.
First night in our shelter,
got a little fire going.

Got a little riverfront
property over there.

- So...
- I'm excited, man.

- Me too.
- It's so good.

-We're in a treehouse.
Like truly.
-I'm excited.

Sleeping in comfy
beds tonight.

Get some good rest.

It's a rough day.

[steven]
so, what are our plans today

[amber] we can go fishing.

[dan] I can show you
around the dock a little more
and do some fishing.

I got some lines to re-hook
and re-bait.

I'll do some active fishing.
Next to that tree.

That fallen tree over there.

It hasn't been fished
for a few days, so
it's probably pretty good.

[matt] working
on the treehouse,

We used a lot of calories,

So we just need
a little food in our belly.

Time to go to work.

[ej] I'm gonna try my luck
at blow darting.

Getting good at it.
That's my plan.

[matt] having guys
and gal out here

That know how to fish and know
how to put food on the table,
that's huge.

[steven] this is
a whole new area,
so I got to learn everything.

Get it, steven.

[dan] we're gonna re-bait
the lines that are down here.

[steven] this current
and this...

This new fishing environment.

[steven] it's totally
different from where we were.

What type of bait
you usually use?

- [amber] snails.
- [steven] the snails?

- [amber] mm-hmm.
- [steven] I have not used
the snails.

[amber] snails seems
to always work.

[steven] interesting.
Good to know.

[waz] yeah. I'm just going
to sit off those birds

In the middle of the day
and see what happens.

Since matt's turned up,
I've been learning a lot
with the bow and arrow,

Just getting better
and better.

That's part of being
a good survivalist,

Is picking up on little tips
and tricks from the people
around you.

I feel more and more
confident, ready
to test my skills.

[waz speaking]

[birds chirping]

[waz] we have to,
as a family,
have a big old feast.

The stress is on.

I have to thrive
in this kind of a moment,

Because to hunt, it means
you must embrace
your savage side.

[birds chirping]

Matt's always out hunting
the southern sector
of our area.

That leaves me
the northern sector to try

And find anything
like a caiman or capybara.

It's very, very quiet.
I have to push further north.

[birds calling]

[horned screamer squawking]

[horned screamer squawking]

♪bleep♪

[amber] dang it!

No biting. Just need
to get better bait.

Not a good fishing day
for me.

[birds chirping]

I am...

I'm sitting
in the blind. There's these
horned screamers...

They're very tough birds
to get real close to.

Horned screamers,
I still see them up
in the roost.

So, here shortly hopefully
they start coming back down.

[waz speaking]

We got six people now
in our group

And hopefully I get one
of these horned screamers.

That is my best way right now
to, to help the team.

[matt peaking]

[birds chirping]

[matt speaking]

[matt speaking]

Oh. Damn it.

When they're on high alert
like that,

Just a little bit of movement
and sound of my bow, took off.

By the time the arrow
got there, it was too late.

Tiring.

Didn't even see a snake today.

Been out for a couple
of hours, was hoping
to bring back some food.

Kind of disappointing,
but heading back in now.

[steven] I'm still kind
of learning this new
fishing environment.

It's totally different
from where we were,

But shorter than the hike
to the lake.

I'm going to take a breather.

[waz] hey, bud.

[matt] hey, waz.

Welcome home.

Disappointing.

But I just got to sit
and watch it
for a couple of hours

And learn their behaviors
and that sort of stuff.

[ej] that's what
needs to be done.

I'm getting closer,
closer every day.

[amber] dang!

Super bad I haven't caught
a fish.

[steven] it's hard here
on the active lines.

I'll probably will go get
a drink of water
and let this set.

At my last camp I got to be
a provider and I was like,

This is what I want.

Like, I really need this.

So it's frustrating not
being able to provide food.

Oh, yeah.

Just gonna sit for a minute.

There's like no bites
out here.

The way they're hitting
is just at weird times

And you don't know
how you have it

Until you really go
somewhere else.

Yeah, I understand.

Amber, she's a great
fisherwoman,

So I hope she can figure
something out.

You guys are the two
best fishermen I know.

[amber] it could take
a couple of days for us
to really nail it down.

[steven] there's a fish
on the line somewhere.

[amber] oh, you got a fish?

[steven] check out that line?

Jiggling.

[amber] it's going.
It's going.

[steven] there's something
gooey down here.

[amber] he's got
something gooey down here,
that's always exciting.

[steven] oh, you're ready
for this?

[amber] I'm ready.

- [steven] ta!
- [amber] oh, my gosh.

You got an eel.

[laughs] what! Dan. We got...

There's an eel.
Bring in that guy.

He crushed it.

[dan] check it out?

Well, look at that guy.

You've eaten one
of these before, right?

- No, not yet.
- No.

[dan] first time ever.

You're in for a treat
even though it's not
the six foot electric eel

Which stuffed us,

I'm stoked because
since we merged,

We really have not
eaten anything.

So we are kind of desperate
at this point.

[dan] give a little bite
for each of us.

Get a little food
in our bellies for dinner.

But matt is out hunting
and that is where
the big scores come in.

[dan] eel medallions,
five star amazon right there.

[waz] you'd pay $80
in a nice looking fine dining
restaurant for this dish.

- [dan] yes. Really?
- [waz] just a appetizer.

- [dan] yeah.
- [waz] two of these, like,
little scallop medallions.

[dan] yeah. Little bit
of truffle oil, garlic chip.

[dan] absolutely. Yeah.

[waz] just little morsels
of fatty goodness.

[steven] hey, buddy.

[amber] how did it go?

[matt] hunted the hell
out of it.

It did not have any thing
on the menu,
but it was beautiful.

[steven] we have
a little appetizer.

[matt] well, appetizers
are nice.

[amber] oh, my gosh, waz
that looks like a beautiful
sushi plate, chefing waz.

Two each and then
a couple of spare little bits
for whoever.

[steven] dig in guys...

[ej] I bet that you really
want to get that fatty white
meaty bit on the outside.

Thanks for doing this.

Dan, cheers to you, brother.

[dan] go, girl!

Cheers! Cheers!

I'm proud of dan,

But if I'm not able to provide
for my team with my skills,

I got to figure out
something else out.

[matt] hmm. Yummy!

[amber] oh, my gosh.
They're juicy.

Melts in your mouth.

Imagine a six foot
one of those.

Tomorrow I'm going
to head back on the hunt.

Something's good to happen.

I'll push the envelope.

Two weeks left till extracti
and between six people,

This isn't a lot of food.

We need a big score.

[ej speaking]

Yeah.

We gotta go.

Getting a little bit past
my hunting grounds today,

It's a little bit different
territory,

Just the way it sits so far.

It's definitely fertile lands
kind of country right here.

Thick, underbrush,
snake country.

[leaves rustling]

[matt] looking for anything
and everything?

Oh.

No.

Looking for any kind
of signs of wildlife,

Anything
that's going to tell me
what's in this area.

You know,
do what we got to do
to get out there,

Get food and keep us
in the fight.

Happy to jump
a snake or something.

So, if that means
I've got to hike out

And spend a couple
of hours out hunting,

I don't come back
with anything
that's just what it is.

It's a wild goose chase.

So we are setting up
our caiman rig out here

Right in this nice
little open area.

And we got some stanky bait.

We got a nice
little bendy tree,

Which will give some slack
to our line

And make sure
it doesn't break

And that's all
we can really do.

Fingers crossed, man.

Fingers crossed.

I'm out here quiet
as a church mouse.

There's just nothing
on the ground to hunt.

This place is not paying off.

[waz] hey, everybody.

[ej] hey, guys.

I covered a lot of jungle
this morning and didn't see
a single thing.

[matt speaking]

[matt] kind of ironic.

There's actually less food
right now with the six of us

Than just three of us
when we were here.

And that's because
with three people,

You have quite a bit
of a bubble.

Now, when you get six,
you just doubled it.

That's twice the distance
that our human smell
is traveling,

That our sound is traveling.

[amber] water girl.

I'm going to boil
three pots right now

And just get it done
for the day.

[dan] and that means
now I have to go
twice the distance

To find the game.

And this part
of the challenge,

You don't have a lot
of in the tank to go
hunt further.

[steven] been tough one today.

[amber] that lightheaded
is getting to me a little bit.

[matt] it's a bad day.

[ej] oh, what's up, dude?

- How'd it go?
- Uh.

Not too good.

I scoured what I believe
to be every walkable

Part of our environment here.

Nothing.

Couldn't find a thing.

It's just not where the,
the game is right now.

[waz] yeah,
we've got a pretty
big footprint.

So I've kind of decided
something has to happen

To try to get us
a little bit up in the game.

I'd like to do an actual hunt
in a different location.

- Spend a couple
of nights there.
- Good idea.

[matt] get a little bit
extra savage.

It's one of those things like,

I know it's safety
in numbers sometimes.

[steven] yeah, yeah.

- [matt] but also...
- [matt speaking]

At this point,
I'm putting in some long,
long days hunting.

So it's time for probably
a little remote hunting trip,

Somewhere I could
spend some calories
to get away,

Immerse myself in that spot

And see if it has
a big success.

And to take advantage
of all our opportunities

I want to take
a great fisherman with me.

Steven, if you're up for it,
buddy?

- I'd love you
to come with me.
- Absolutely.

With steven,
I could definitely focus
on the hunt a little better

Because never going
to let me down
with catching fish.

Let's go two nights,
three days.

It's going to be rough.

We're going to be
sleeping probably on the dirt.

[steven] I'll sleep in a hole
all day with you, buddy.

It's next level.

I'm fatigued.
I'm tired.

I'm starving,
malnourished, lack of sleep.

But it's like that
from day one out here.

So, going with matt,
I think it's a good call.

We went through
louisiana together.

We know how to keep
our smell and our noise dow

And it'll give us an
opportunity to maybe bring
something back

To the rest of the family.

Where are you
thinking of going?

Where we saw some of those
capybara tracks
just a little bit,

A little bit more open.

But if we can hunt here
and also hunt there,
it'd be great.

- That's going
to double our chances.
- Split offs.

[amber] divide and conquer.

[matt] taking a risk,
but it's also got huge reward.

[waz] you got to risk it
to get the biscuit.

[amber] uh!

Capybara biscuit.

Any time you do
something like this

It's got huge stakes involved.

Let me grab a fire starter
for you, steven.

[steven] thank you,
sweetheart.

The biggest risk
we're going to have
is that we go out there

And we get so calorie
depleted that
we are just burned up

And barely can crawl
ourselves back.

This is a huge,
probably 10,000 calorie
journey,

But where there's risk,
there's always reward

And there's a potential
we could bring back
so much food,

We can actually
all have a stuffed belly
for extraction day,

And that right there
is worth the risk.

[steven] I've got fishhooks.

I've got a little bit of bait.

[matt] got all our arrows,
knives.

- All right, let's do.
- [steven] do this thing.

[ej] if you can't get
a decent shelter
in one of those

Frickin' monster storms
comes back,

And you guys need to try
and make it back here.

No sense of getting
hypothermia.

[steven] we'll do it smart.

It's not our first rodeo.

We've got our best fisherman

Our best hunter going out.

Hopefully they can score
something big for us.

Have some excitement
while we're gone, will you?

When I was told,
six people dropped out

And I had to get
into the amazon
to help whoever I could.

This is the kind of moment
that I came out to do

To push myself
and help out the team.

[ej] happy hunting!

[matt] all right,
into the unknown.

It's a risk.

But we ain't gonna stop
and we ain't gonna quit.

[amber] get it!

[matt speaking]

♪bleep♪

[matt speaking]

[narrator] covering
three miles in two hours.

Steven and matt have
pushed farther north

Than any survivalist
in this challenge.

[matt]
this is untamed territory.

We have yet to see it
and our human scent

Has yet to disturb
the area so...

[steven speaking]

Ooh!

[matt speaking]

They're right there
across the bridge.

Looks like something's
beneath the grass
and grazing right there.

Capybaras are herbivores.

Oh, absolutely
looks fresh too.

[matt speaking]

It's a trek.

We had to cross the river.

We had to go
several miles north.

And we've got to build
a shelter.

We've got to build
a quick cowboy camp.

[matt] we could
real quickly put a...

- [steven] cross beam lean to.
- [matt] yep. Just put 'em.

Just cross beam lean
to right here.

[steven] I think
that's a good plan, dude.

What we don't want to do
is make much noise
right here.

Let's do,
like, fastest shelter
in naked and afraid history.

[chopping tree branch]

So, on this hunt
it's vitally important

That we keep
our human footprint
to a bare minimum.

There may have to be
a little bit of chopping,
but I mean a little bit.

Oh, yeah.

It's nice buddy to have
you out here,

Building a shelter
where we don't even
have to use our words hardly.

We both know exactly
what we're doing
before we do it.

[matt] but that looks
really good, buddy.

[steven] that was quick.

[amber] putting walls
in the back and then

I'm going to finish his side
and I'll start a fire
in the middle of that root,

So I can burn the root out.

I'm just trying to measure so

I can get a feel
for what we're doing.

With the guys gone,

I just want to finish
the shelter before steven
and matt come home

To have it 100%
buttoned up,
so we can finish strong.

[ej] how's that looking,
amber?

[amber] really good.

[dan] this looks great.
Good job.

[amber] thank you.

My body's starting
to slow down

Where on easy things
I'm like, whoa.

[ej] normal tasks used
to be easier now.

[amber] yeah.
Like, I haven't felt this
in this whole challenge.

[dan] I'll go out there
and check the lines
in a second.

Maybe do some fishing.

[amber] I'll join you on that.

[dan] after two days
of not catching fish,

I need to put some
more food on the table.

[amber] oh.
You got a fish?

[dan] a little rigor mortised.

[amber]
we're going to eat 'em.
I don't care.

[dan] it's a questionable.
It's right on the edge.

- [amber] smells
kind of fishy, though.
- [dan] yeah.

[amber] it's up to you.

If you feel though
it's edible go eat it.

I'll do that.

[amber] I'll have a bite
of it. Save me a bite.

[steven speaking]

[matt chuckling]

We got our shelter set up
and we got it done quick.

But the good thing is,
we still have time
to go out and scout.

We're about to head this way.

We're going to quietly
be sneaking across.

Keep our eye out
for anything,

Because at this point,
our tribe could use any win,

No matter how big or small.

If it's out there
I think we'll find it.

[steven speaking]

[steven speaking]

[birds chirping]

[matt speaking]

[horned screamer squawking]

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[horned screamer squawks]

[matt speaking]

It's about a 50 yard

Straight up shot.

[steven] oh, my god!

Did you hit him?
Did you hit him?

[matt speaking]

Oh, my god!
Wow!

- Branch is about as big
as my finger.
- An inch away.

And that arrow
is stuck in it right now.

It didn't even deflect,
it's stuck in it.

That was insane.

It took off
and the arrow wasn't in him?

[matt] yeah.

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[birds chirping]

[matt speaking]

[amber] fire feels
so good on my feet.

This is about done.

Hmm.
I don't know.

[amber] tastes funny?

If it tastes funny,
then don't.

Usually they shouldn't
have that smell.

I've ate some old fish before,
but they never had that
fishy fish smell

After cooking them.

Yeah, little fishy.

[amber speaking]

We pushed our self
so hard to fish more
to hunt harder,

To get some protein.

So this is disappointing,
but I'm just going
to keep trying.

[amber] can you hold it
outside for a day

And use it for caiman rig.

[dan] that's a good idea.

Damn it.
Damn it.

[matt speaking]

Looks like
there should be something.

So we're going
to keep hitting it up.

[matt speaking]

[waz speaking]

[dan speaking]

[waz speaking]

This is one
of the hardest places
in the world to come up

And do what we've done.

And, you know,
we're in this home stretch
now,

But the amazon
is definitely not a place
you should underestimate.

We need to get protein.

We need to get fats in us,

So that we can bring
this one home real strong.

[waz speaking]

[ej speaking].

We just trekked
through the jungle
in pitch black dark.

Just see how dark
it is out here.

One, two.

[steven] boom!

We sort of followed
the way the trail felt.

- Yeah.
- Um.

You know, on our feet
and I say that's one thing
about being barefoot

And butt naked as you
feel your place pretty good.

[twigs snapping]

What in the hell was that?

[steven speaking]

So, it's day 50.

Bright and early
and I'm walking around
the amazon

With a bow and arrow
looking for breakfast.

I haven't eaten protein
in a couple of days.

I've just had that heart
of palm for the last
couple of days.

And we're in this homestretch
trying to keep going

And we want to finish
with something strong.

[ej] happy day 50!

Happy day 50!

[amber] I am exhausted.

[dan] me too, man.

[ej] just feeling it today.

Hard to believe
where we're at.

[amber speaking]

I've got ten more
hard days left

To really use my energy
well and manage it.

I want to bring as much
as I can to the team.

[ej] pace yourselves,
we're not eating
all that much,

Long ways to go yet.

We're all kind of exhausted

I kind of just want
to wrap myself
in a bubble till day 60,

To be honest,
but trying to push
and stay motivated

And do what we need
to get there.

[ej] these next ten days
are critical that

We keep putting stuff
in our belly.

[amber] of course.

[dan] I'm not going
to be stagnant.

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

You know, if they were here,

They'd be leaving
some deep imprints
in this mud.

It's just unfortunate that
it just doesn't look like
anything coming down.

No.

[matt] so there's a lot
of horned screamers in here?

[steven] yeah.

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

On that limb,
fluffballs in there.

[steven speaking]

[matt] I don't think so.

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[matt] I'll sit back here,
and if it comes out,
we'll have a chance.

[water splashing]

[matt] watch out, buddy.

In the amazon,
you never know
what's hiding in the water.

And that could definitely
mean a catastrophic bite.

Careful, buddy.
Careful. Careful.

[steven] oh, what is that?

[matt] watch out, buddy.

Careful buddy.
Careful, careful.

[steven] oh, what is that?

I'm good.
I'm good.

I'm trying to grab this rat.

[matt] yeah,
if you can see 'em.

If you can grab by the tail,
just pull him out fast.

He might have
came out the top.

Just came into this hole
here right towards you.

- [steven] yeah.
- [matt] came out and went
in this hole in this tree.

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[steven] I don't know
where he could have gone,
buddy.

[matt]
they got the sneak on us.

[steven speaking]

[matt] that was exciting.

It's something.

I mean,
that's the most action
we've seen all day.

Definitely
not for lack of trying.

It's just a tiny bit of meat.

But, I mean, it's food.

And seeing food is few
and far between out here
in the jungle.

Jungle is unforgiving.

Tree rat one, savage king.

Well, we'll just get it
next time.

Come on, weather.
Give us a break.

Just little sun come out,
then the freaking animals
will come out.

[waz] no luck on the hunt
this morning,

But I'm going to take
that evening shift that
matt normally goes out.

Hopefully you come back
with something
that we're eating.

[birds chirping]

[ej] they're calling you?

- [waz] yeah,
they're laughing at me.
- [ej] yeah.

[waz speaking]

[ej] [laughs] sure.

Matt and steven off
to hunt for a couple of nights

As far as filling
our belly's up.

I'm taking that role
for this afternoon.

Those horned
screamers are sitting
pretty close up in the middle.

So I'm going to go see
if I can't bring one
back for dinner.

- [ej] oh, yeah.
- [dan] and you got
all the broadheads you need?

Yeah, I got everything I need.

[amber] good luck, waz.

We're just walking
out of camp right now.

I've got a bow
and four arrows.

A few of the horned screamers,
not too far upriver.

They're sitting
in a pretty good spot

That I know
I can have access to,

And I'll have a pretty
good shot at it.

It's just going to take
a little bit of time
stalking up on them

So they don't hear me coming

And I can get close enough
to get a shot away.

[waz speaking]

[birds chirping]

[horned screamers squawks]

They're right in the middle,
that's where the blind is.

So I'm going to sneak up
into the blind

And wait till
they're ready to go to bed.

And wait till they come up
into that roost
and get them there.

This is our little
hunting blind that we've made.

I can see down at the river
in a few different directions.

So I'm just going to sit here
and wait for 'em,
and see what happens.

[horned screamers squawks]

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

Day 50 to this challenge,
and I'll tell you what,

We are putting in more
calories than the average
person would do

In the first week.

Absolutely.

Just hoping that
we have a big score
for the group.

It's coming to a bit
of a price because

Steven and I
are getting worn out.

Yeah.

We have to downshift,
do some fishing real quick.

Get a little food
in our stomach.

We're keeping our heads up
doing what we do best.

We're tired.

We haven't got
a lot of caloric intake,
but you can't just stop.

If you stop, you die.

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven speaking]

[matt] oh, yeah.

[steven speaking]

Lucked out. Found a little
frog here.

It's going to come in clutch,
maybe we can catch
a little bit of dinner tonight

Before we post up shop.

[steven] let it drift
on down to the big boys.

Got to work.

[steven speaking]

[matt] oh, hold up.
Hold up. Hold up.

There we go.

[steven] there it is.

[matt smiling]

All right.
Whoo.

Holy crap.

[matt] little tiny fish
took forever.

All right. After a lot
of trial and error

Me and matt figured out
the key here,

Got a few these little
wolffish.

This right here is going
to give us a nice fish stew.

I think we both needed
it with the amount of calories
we put in today.

These aren't monsters.

But, you know,
four of these,
it's pretty good.

Every little bit goes
a long way out here
in the amazon.

[horned screamer quacks]

There're two good sized
horned screamers
sitting on the water

On the other side.

I almost had a good shot
of them on this side,

But the male want to mate
with the female,
messed it up for me

And she flew off
to the other side.

So, he followed her
over there.

That was one that just left.

Oh, that was the second one.

So, unfortunately,
no dice on those guys.

I think something might
have spooked them
on the other side,

Maybe a monkey
or something like that.

It's pretty frustrating
being so close to something

That you want to harvest
to eat and not being

Able to just reach out
and get it.

Especially with this group
getting weaker and weaker,

I need to get something
that can put a little bit
of food in our bellies

And keep us going,
keep us strong.

It's a rat.

The brush tailed tree rat
about ten feet,
15 feet in front of me.

Definitely that squirrel
shaped, like a weasel,
squirrel shape.

But I don't think
I'm going to get
any closer than this.

[waz] oh, you bitch.

I missed by a centimeter.

My other arrow's in the tree.

That was a decent shot.

I just hit the tree
instead of the squirrel.

I needed that.

Hey.

How did it go?

[waz] I almost got a squirrel.

Oh, man, I can't wait
for you to come home.

And you're going to bring us
bird and it's going to happen.

Maybe one day.

It will.

I'm excited for you.
I might take the bow.

You guys are okay with that?

[waz] yeah, of course.
It's here for everyone.

I shoot bow's back home.

I do competitions,
but I am a left-handed person

And we only have
the right-handed bow.

So, what I want to do
is teach myself something ne

How to shoot a bow

This is my first time

It's like trying to teach
your muscles new memory here.

Pretty close.

Oh, I nailed it right-handed.

Whoa! Uh.

Two bull's eyes in a row.

Man, that was awesome.

You know, one thing
I would do,

Since obviously
I can shoot this
right-handed now.

I wouldn't mind taking
this bow and try
to get something too.

Maybe something's telling me
to get out there and just try.

All right.

Me and the savage
himself over here,
finishing up our fish stew.

Much needed going
to give us the calories
we need to.

[burps] go out
and get the job done.

But we got to rest up.

We got to hydrate.

We covered
a lot of ground today.

That was disheartening
because of all the time
we spent sitting last night.

Hmm-mmm.

All the time so far today
didn't have much action.

- It's not over yet.
- Yeah.

But it's a...

- It's tough,
tough ground out here.
- Tough.

I think tomorrow
will probably be
our last shot.

We're putting in a lot
of calories into this
investment.

A lot of calories,
a lot of steps,
a lot of hours.

And we just need
to be able to get back.

So, we'll get some rest,
hydrate up, hit it hard.

Yeah.
Keep at it.

Boom!

[birds chirping]

[horned screamers squawks]

[steven speaking]

[matt speaking]

[steven] yeah.

[steven speaking]

[water splashing]

That was big.

So much big stuff
in this water,
it's ridiculous.

Day 51 and I haven't had
any luck catching anything.

So, I've got to have
something happen.

Like they're not even hitting,
like they're sunbathing
the fish.

That one right there
in the center.

He's just not having it.

Damn.

[birds chirping]

Oh, crap.
It's right there.

Oh, I see you.

I'm gonna tie this up
and go grab the bow.

I just taught myself
how to shoot a bow
right-handed

Because that's the only
bow we got.

So I want to go out
and try to get a bird

And get some damn food
for these boys.

[dan] are you ready for this?

You got an eel?
