Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 8, Episode 3 - In Your Face, Amazon! - full transcript
Six survivalists in the Amazon. Steven raids caiman nest risking danger. Dan and Waz team up to catch vultures threatening camp. Amber, Trish and Jen's huge project strains group dynamics.
it's crazy to kind
wrap my head around,
But I'm deep in the middle
of the amazon jungle,
By myself, looking for food
It's just me out here
right now. It's just me.
There's nobody around.
This is a hollow tree.
I hear this, like, strange
sound coming from the tree.
I don't really know
what it is.
It's almost like heartbeats,
almost, so.
There's all these
little insect wings.
Something's been having
a good meal in there.
Aw,!
Oh, my...
Ew...
The jungle is nuts!
three miles nort
of steven's camp...
Time to go to work.
waz also finds
himself alone in the amazon
After a bountiful day
of fishing...
Yeah, boy.
...Ended in rod'
sudden sickness...
you're almost home.
Almost home.
...And emergency evacuation
gary left day two,
rod left this morning.
Basically,
it's the waz show now.
I thought I was good.
I thought I'd made it.
Definitely the plan today,
I'm gonna head back
to that other fishing hole
That was about an
hour-and-a-half walk away.
And I'm confident at that
other fishing hole,
I'll just be dragging fish
out of the water
Like we did last time.
But I am really hungry
right now
And I need some calories
in my belly.
If I do catch some fish,
I'm gonna cook them up
straight away, eat them,
And then do
a little bit more fishing
Before I've gotta leave
and come home.
You see the lake's starting
to appear through there?
It's tough me being
out here by myself.
I've got to do
all of the jobs.
There's no one to help.
It makes it difficult.
You can see the fishes
coming up
And grabbing stuff
at the surface.
But I'm not focusing on that
I'm focusing on
the little things
I have to do every day
to get me to 40 days.
This is what we saw
the other day
When we got down here.
Just a lot of movement
on the surface.
I'm gonna get myself set up
And I'm gonna get some food
out of this water.
It's a good news day,
we got a grub.
Man, that storm's gonna
be big, isn't it?
I can hear the rain.
You can hear this wall of ra
just coming towards me.
It's really ominous.
You've gotta work out if
the juice is worth the squeeze
On everything that
you do out here.
If I can catch food...
It's definitely worth it.
There he is.
Come on.
You all right? There we go.
I'm gonna keep this guy.
Come on, buddy.
one mile
to the south...
It feels like rain.
dan begins his
second day without a teammate.
And without
significant protein.
my biggest fear in the
challenges by far,
is being alone.
I'm about
to climb this tree.
There's big anthurium
leaves right there.
It's so nice to patch holes
in the shelter
while it's raining.
You just weave
one of these up
into the wall, and...
It stops it immediately.
It just keeps thundering
and lighting out.
It makes me panic inside
when I hear thunder
and lightning.
I think it's 'cause
my first challenge in mexico,
It got down to, like,
42, 43 degrees at night.
half of my body's numb
I think maybe I, literally,
have ptsd from that.
Out here in the amazon,
I mean,
There all kinds
of crazy things
living in every tree.
Ants can start raining
down on you
Or other biting insects.
Very dangerous.
Oh, boy.
Of course the rain
starts now, ah.
Raiding ants all over me.
Ugh.
Ugh. Uh, god...
Ants are huge.
Oh, no.
Ah.
I still hate the rain.
five miles south.
Oh, nice. Hell, yeah.
amber has led trish and jen
to a steady supply of fish.
We'll take you to the amazon.
but a difference
in priorities...
We really need
to work on our roof.
they just don't care.
I gotta get
the bed frame together,
And I gotta get enough vines
to put it together.
They've been working
on their beds
For, like, four, five days.
has revealed
cracks in the all-female tea
-There's a storm coming in.
It's raining.
-Yeah.
Do we have firewood?
we have whatever
we have from last night
that we didn't burn.
I think we should
take a break,
And we should collect
firewood for tonight
if it's gonna start raining.
I can do this if you want
to do firewood.
we have some firewood.
Yeah, but we need more.
finishing up
your shelter, preparing
for your environment,
Is crucial out here.
Even though I've been sayin
we need to reinforce
the shelter for multiple day
With the girls,
it's not sticking yet.
And I think, truthfully, it's
gonna have to rain
For them to see
the detrimental effects of it.
- Jen, do you want
to start looking for firewood?
- Sure.
All right, let's
be optimistic.
It's raining right now.
Let's go get firewood
and stop what we're doing,
And then, um, let's
get ready for tonight.
We'll go without food
for a little bit.
I think amber's
very competent in her skill
and her experience out here
But sometimes she just, like
Doesn't have
great communication.
Yeah, we need
to get the fire going.
Jen, you wanna sit down,
I'll bring these in,
- And you can start the fire.
- Sure.
it's the delivery.
It's how you say it.
Yeah, you guys,
we don't have much time.
It's gonna come down
pretty bad.
just in case
the fire goes out,
We'll have these
to start the fire.
A nice little tinder bundle.
They're wet,
but it's something.
It's better than
having nothing.
damn, that's a breeze.
it sure is.
Whoo, we're about to get wet.
And our roof is looking slim.
Yeah, let's bring in
those logs.
You might wanna
get in the shelter.
It's getting colder.
Holy crap.
Come on. One last bite.
Take it. There we go.
Aw. Just got a little
one on there.
I've got a couple of fish
up here on land,
But this storm that's coming
is massive.
The sky's really ominous.
It's getting really windy.
I think something massive I
coming in,
Which is a little bit
dangerous for me,
So I'm gonna get outta here
I've a full-size fish there
that'll fill my belly up.
I've got a smaller one,
And then half the one
we're using as bait.
I'll eat that as well. There
no need wasting that.
I'm gonna need
a little bit of firewood.
But I'm getting
that fire goin',
And I'm gonna
have fish in my belly.
the wind's pickin' up.
I hate thunder.
With all the rain,
there's no animals here.
Which makes sense,
'cause the animals
don't wanna be crotch deep
in water either.
It's cold.
Temperature drops 20 degrees.
Hypothermia is a real thing.
Window makers falling
in this canopy
is a real thing.
It's really important
I get back to camp
as soon as possible.
Venture out and get
those leaves that I cut.
Oh, it's so wet.
It's thundering and lightnin
out here right now.
I'm getting anxiety.
I'm running out
trying to pick leaves,
And just shore up the shelte
as best I can.
These leaves are
totally worth the effort.
I'm able to, like,
just in ten minutes,
Stick these up in all
the holes inside,
And totally waterproof
the inside of my shelter.
Ouch.
Fire is too hot.
Okay, that's enough. Over it.
Damn.
Whoa.
Oh, my god!
Storm's coming in pretty good,
But it just dropped me a nice
new piece of firewood
And some shingling
right into my front lawn.
Thank god I wasn't
standing there.
It knocked the top
of that tree right off.
Holy , that could
have killed me.
A good ten, 15 feet off
the top of that tree fell off,
but... I don't know,
Now it's probably
30-feet tall.
Man, my heart is
racing from that.
It's intense.
Bone dry inside here
right now.
I'm gonna try to ride out
the storm as best I can.
this is
one of the hard things
about being out here solo
Is the fact that I've had
to walk an hour,
Catch these fish,
walk an hour back.
And, uh, I get back to camp,
I can't just eat 'em.
I can't just put 'em on a fi
and eat 'em.
I've gotta set them down.
I've gotta clean them.
I've gotta go
collect firewood.
It's a lot of work between
catching those fish
and eating those fish,
And that's why it would be
nice having another person,
Um, and have that division
of labor a little bit
Where things just run a little
bit smoother and quicker.
Oh, it's hot in there.
You wanna cook the fish
all the way.
There's parasites in there.
There's bacteria in there.
It's definitely not
something I wanna do
Is put some raw fish
in my mouth.
That's a big risk.
If you get sick out here, it
gonna be coming out both end
From a survival perspective
It puts you in
a real bad situation.
It's so delicious.
I can take a lot
of joy from this,
But, like anything with life,
If you have someone
to share that moment with,
Especially the good moments,
Then it's always just gonna
be that little bit
more special.
So, it would be nice
to have someone here.
Right now, I'm just gonna
sit here and enjoy this.
it's super windy,
a total downpour,
So, we're all hunkered down
in our shelter.
Tryin' to keep our fire goin
It's pretty intense.
I think this is, like,
the craziest storm we've had
Since we've been here.
None of us are
going outside in this.
No, ah!
Half of my shelter's
holding up,
The other half isn't.
But I just found a little spot
that is the most protected.
it's been
raining all night.
I'd appreciate if it stopped
anytime now.
I'm getting wet
on my butt.
Yeah, it's so hard.
This is the hardest rain
I think we've had.
You could hear
the thunderstorms rolling in
As it was going dark,
And then just
a deluge of water.
Like, it just dumps
so much water so quickly,
It was insane.
And also, I've been
itchy all day.
There is flies, there's ants
there's mosquitoes.
All these things just
constantly barraging you,
Biting you, sucking
your blood out.
I froze my ass off last night.
oh, my gosh.
Look at your butt.
the rain brings out
every type of insect,
Every single bug
you could ever think of,
And puts it in your shelter.
- This is what happens to us.
- Look at all that blood.
It's like these flies
that she just killed
with her finger on me
- Is, like, they're
just...
- Bastards.
...Horrible. And evil.
These little bastards.
They just suck your life
all day long.
holy crap. What
a freakin' nightmare.
Everything's totally soaked
I mean, just
totally saturated.
Soaking wet ground.
It was just tempest death
noah's ark flood rain.
I mean, it was dumping.
I'm hungry.
Haven't had any protein
in the past couple days,
But, uh, I need to put a roof
on my shelter.
I wish there were palms here
It's the only way
to make it even in
the realm of waterproof.
But there's not, so, I'm
gonna have to debris it up.
Towards the river,
There's a big grass bed
that's dead
And kind of overcoming
these big fallen trees.
And I'm gonna use that gras
as the base of my debris.
Since there is water.
Water brings animals.
So, this is
extremely dangerous.
The smaller the debris is,
the more compact I can get I
The more compact it is,
the better for waterproofing
If I can get this base on,
And then lash it down
really tight,
It's gonna help
my waterproofing.
It's like the song says,
it's all about the base.
Slowly adding this layer
To the roof of my shelter.
Making sure it's even.
Making sure I can't see
my bed underneath.
Priority number one
now that the roof's done,
Fire, water, food.
definitely not goin
in the water.
It's really such a mess
after a storm.
today, we
came up with a plan
That we're goin'
to work on the roof,
Which is great,
and get it done.
I was
cold enough last night,
- I don't need
to be cold anymore.
- Yeah.
We have so many tasks
and necessary things to do,
But it's paramount right no
To, again, reinforce
the shelter
To make sure that
the other half is waterproof.
Are you okay?
- Yeah, are you ready?
- Yeah.
Let's just go grab
hella palms right now.
Okay.
I've been
mentioning it every day,
"hey, we need
to work on the roof.
We need to work
on the roof."
And finally, trish
and jen said, "yes."
They wanna learn.
They're willing to work.
Whatever we've gotta do.
If we stack enough
of them, it'll be worth it.
Okay.
I feel like trish
and amber are both
really strong survivalists.
But there's some tension.
So, I'm just glad that
we can work together
To reinforce our shelter.
Add more palms.
It's extremely beneficial
for the temperature inside
As well as if it
potentially rains.
And, so, we're gonna
strip it in the middle,
- Lay 'em like this,
and then weave.
- Yep.
- Okay?
- Yeah. Let's do that.
It's like a razor
going through this thing.
Hmm-hmm.
Ow! ouch!
Ooh. Ah!
Ooh. Ah!
God, I really
scratched my boob.
That looks pretty gross.
That was pretty painful!
- Oh, trish.
- Yeah?
I totally hurt my boob.
Oh, yeah. Oh, god,
it's right across your nip.
Yeah. All the way.
It hit me right there,
and like.
Ah, you poor thing.
That sucks.
That looks as if
you got cut by a cat.
Maybe it could have
been a cougar out there.
- I wasn't sure.
- Could've been.
I thought we were
the only cougars out here.
-Are you okay?
-Yeah, I'm fine.
Just it hurts.
I'm resilient enoug
to get past the pain
And just keep pushing forward.
Should we rack and stack 'em?
Definitely.
we've tried a lot
of different ways
with the shingles,
But, I mean,
these allow fuller coverage
Because they create
the full sheet,
So they should
still be protected
even when they dry out.
That's great and that
really covered so much.
We had so much open here,
it was bad.
the girls and I are
communicating with each othe
we respect each other.
I see them.
I know that they can be
beasts in the wild.
the shelter
is every single day.
You can't just
set it and forget it, so...
We are learning that,
and we are doing what we can
to make sure that we stay dry.
why don't we go
cut some palm nuts
And get some larva
and then we'll kinda
go from there.
- yeah.
- And get some good fish, set up a couple of lines
And try to get some
more protein for us to eat.
all right, team taj
let's rally!
I didn't sleep so well
Ironically, not because
of the rain...
Even though it poured
all night long,
but because I was itchy.
But there's one advantage
to all this rain,
I am going to make myself
a little garden.
At home
I work on really remote,
bio-secure islands
Which means we try really ha
to prevent any introduction
Of plants or animals to the
That might go invasive.
And as part of that,
we don't let people
eat tomatoes
For 48 hours before going
on to the islands.
Because seeds of tomatoes
can pass through
digestive tract
Totally intact
and sprout really well.
So out here,
I thought of doing
some reverse biosecurity.
so I ate
a bunch of tomatoes
before starting the challenge.
All right. Last night
before we start the challenge.
I'm trying to squeeze in
one last snack.
A nice, big juicy tomato
with seeds that just so happen
To pass through
your digestive tract.
When I started the challenge
and went to the bathroom
for the first time,
I mixed it with some dirt,
And there's a bunch of
a little tomato sprouts
coming out of the ground.
To my surprise!
So I am going to bring
naked and afraid
From the paleolithic
to the neolithic.
This is the sunniest spot
I can find.
I think tomatoes
need full sun.
If I can start naked and
afraid agriculture out her,
that would be amazing.
Making little
terraces here.
This is going to be great.
Okay.
And I couldn't be more proud.
Check it out,
the little sproutlets!
Put a little water.
Grow big and strong.
I don't think anyone's
evert tried to have a garden
on any challenge before ever.
But to have a garden
and have it actually
produce food for me...
It will probably take
about 40 days
For these to produce fruit,
I'm guessing.
That's an evolutionary
human existence.
That's a big deal.
And there you have it.
Agriculture.
We'll see how they do.
today is a fishing day
so even though
it's pretty frustrating
Having to make
and hour and a half walk awa
to get there,
I'm happy to do that
to get food in my belly.
For me, it's worth
walking through mud,
far away from camp,
If it means
getting some fish out
of that lake.
But unfortunately,
this morning,
I'm also having to deal wit
a whole bunch of fire ants,
just all over me all at once
And I don't even know
where they came from.
I'm not going to
get upset by it.
The number one thing
I want to focus on today
Is to get some food.
I don't know if I like this.
I've been down here
for a while,
And I've not even had
a nibble, not a bite. Nothing.
I haven't seen any splashes
in the water.
I don't know
what has happened.
I wonder how
this works, like...
Maybe something
to do with the storm?
Something's happened
where the fish
aren't biting anymore,
Which is a little bit strange.
I'm trying to work that out.
It's really weird
that just... Zero bites.
Doesn't make a lot of sense
It's like the fish
have just gone on holiday
or something.
Yeah, no, there's nothing.
hey,
this is kind of solid.
- it is solid.
- it's a good log.
think we can drag this puppy?
Bust it in a few big chunks.
all right,
looking good, beauties.
Let's go to the water
in the sun
And let's come up with
a game plan.
now that
we're working together
I'm gonna talk to the girls
About really expanding
our horizon and just,
You know, do caiman hunts,
get a bunch of fish
and getting done.
I'm thinking we should
consider fishing down here.
I think we'll have
better fishing on the river
Because the pond
is really limited.
Like, it takes us
about an hour or two hours
in the morning
And if we miss that window
coming out of here
- I bet we'll get
some big fish.
- Yeah.
- we should have a dock built.
- - yeah.
This could be
a good team project.
Let's build a little platform.
- Maybe, um, that platform
could turn into a raft.
- A raft.
So build the dock
that is, essentially,
A two-in-one piece with a raft
And then, um,
set up an area where
we can move hyacinths
And actually have
a square set out
So we can actually
just go there and fish daily.
I was thinking of starting
to maybe cut that tree
And have it just drop
right across the hyacinths...
- Mm-hm.
- ...And see
this how far we can get.
the biggest tree
in the amazon!
We see this tree
that's right by the edge
of the water
And it looks long enough
that it could go
nearly halfway across.
let's chop it down.
That thing is gonna be perfect for our dock.
Once we cut down the tree,
it will act as our pier
out to the deeper water.
Then we'll clear out
the hyacinth to create
an open fishing platform
And build the raft
that attaches to the tree
like a floating dock.
I'm staying here for 60 days.
This dock is so necessary
because we have to transitio
away from our ponds
That we have near our shelte
to the river.
It's what will provide.
We're gonna cut down
this damn tree
And we're gonna make
an amazing dock.
the rewards are
a dock will clear almost
All the way to the other sid
So we can open up
our exploration
And maybe find something new.
The risks, however,
are that it's a huge tree,
So it's a big undertaking,
And, um, it's gonna take days
to cut this down, it's huge.
I'm gonna
take some hacks
And then we can
rotate back and forth.
- Do you know what I mean?
- yeah.
I'm following the tree
so that it's easier for us
to snap it.
sure.
- this tree is solid!
- yeah.
When I'm hacking
into this tree, I'm, like,
"oh, my god, of course,
it has to be the hardest
Goddamn tree in the amazon."
But with my team,
we are unstoppable.
- Okay, jen, you're up.
- Okay.
- I think I put
a good dent in it.
- Yeah, you did.
- Keep it consistent and then
we'll saw a little, too.
- Okay.
Ooh, everything is moist.
The weather out here
is unpredictable.
It can be hot and sunny
and then rainy and freezing
the next moment.
I need to get more firewood
'cause last night
I burned through a ton of it
I wanted to keep the fire
big and strong
while it was raining.
A couple more trips
and I'll be satisfied.
I was just paranoid, so...
so, I really
don't have much left.
You know, I feel like
when you're out here
you're constantly reminded
That danger
is literally everywhere.
You know,
there's all kinds of things
on land that could get me,
So you still
have to be vigilant.
One snakebite,
one bite of something out he
Could take me
out of this challenge
in five minutes.
Oh! ow!
Jesus christ!
what the was that?
I think it was a scorpion. Ow.
Kinda feels like
scorpion bites.
there are over
50 types of venomous scorpio
in the amazon
With sting effects ranging
from intense burning
and swelling
To paralysis.
ugh.
Actually maybe
it was a scorpion.
I can feel it moving
through my foot, like...
Looking for firewood
to bring back to my shelter
And take one step
and my foot is burning.
It feels different
than the bee sting
'cause the pain's moving.
It is excruciating.
I just wanna, like, clean it
That fat little toe,
it's swelling up like crazy.
Yeah, I think I'm good
for collecting firewood
for now.
It's no joke.
I'm hearing so many birds
and creatures
And a lot of frogs tonight,
So, um, a lot happening
out there right now.
- Why don't I see him?
- Right here.
- oh, my god...
- hurry!
...He's huge!
We have to be really careful.
It could burn your hand.
- ha!
-ooh, nice!
Oh, he's peeing!
oop, oop, oop!
Oh, my god.
that is
the biggest frog
I've ever seen.
- wow!
- Oh, my god.
Look at the size
of those legs.
the smokey jungle frog
Can grow up to
eight inches long,
But secretes
poisonous toxins from its sk
as a defense mechanism.
Here he is. And I tied him up.
I tied him up
on his little waist.
I have him
chained to the tree.
And all the stuff
on the ground,
this white stuff,
Is from when
I caught the frog last night.
It, like, secreted
a whole bunch of liquid.
And, um,
it's all on the ground
even today. It's still here.
So I'm really glad
that we made the decision
To not do anything with him
last night while it was dark
and we didn't really...
Like, we couldn't
see anything.
You see all the white.
That's from
untying the cord
that I had around the frog
Which was on his skin,
so it's turned my hand white.
Is it worth killing him?
how did
your hands feel after
you washed them last night?
I had a cut on my hand
and it started to burn.
mm, yeah.
it's not
really that safe.
I don't have soap or anything
to really clean with
out here, so...
you're gonna
let him go?
- Yeah...
- That's your decision?
...I'm gonna let him go.
I think so.
hi, buddy. Good news,
You've been set free.
- All right, buddy.
- bye, buddy.
Do you wanna get
some mud in there
and get really deep with it?
No, it's good.
It's cleaned off.
- Okay.
- Yeah, it's good.
I have to go deeper and deep
into the unknown jungle.
And the deeper you go,
the thicker it gets, uh,
the more dangerous it gets.
I mean, we're in the jungle
I mean, the ground is alive
like, you look at it
and it moves.
From scorpions to spiders
to snakes, you know,
Just everything.
This place is wild.
I gotta go find food,
I have to find
where the animals are.
First couple of days
I was here,
I ran into this bog marsh.
It's a pretty good
distance away.
That's a perfect
little breeding area
for these caimans,
So I'm gonna see if
maybe I can call one in
Or find a nest or something
I'm gonna try and call caima
like I call alligators
back at home...
...And see if I can get 'em
to call back to me.
I don't know a whole lot
about caimans,
but I grew up with alligator
I grew up in florida, so...
Water moccasins
and alligators is my jam,
But here it's different,
it's harder.
It's nerve-racking.
I'm expelling
a lot of calories.
To have a really big
protein source
would be great right now,
But especially not having
really any food
for the past 48 hours,
I need a big score, baby!
ooh. Get down.
After we decided
to let the frog go,
We wanted to get
an early start
at chopping down that tree.
We're actually
doing pretty good.
oh, yeah!
Looks pretty deep.
I think if we spent
15, 20 minutes each,
we'll get the tree down.
like, this is
a really hardy tree.
look at this.
Can you see it?
- oh, with the hole at the bottom?
- - yeah!
is that a wasp nest?
- oh, my goodness!
- yeah.
enough hornets
sting any of us, I mean,
We could be
seriously affected by that.
Just one hornet sting
is enough, like,
imagine a whole nest.
it's risky,
but the hornets' nest
is pretty high up
And when it falls
it should land
Out in the middle
of the water.
If we have to take breaks
to get away from them,
that's what will happen.
- you're up.
- all right.
I'll give it a shot
with this thing...
- Okay.
- ...See what happens.
higher.
Use one hand, babe.
-Are you micromanaging me?
-I'm just helping.
I cut down trees.
I know. I do, too.
amber can be
pretty fricking challenging
And, um, I have a hard time
with faking.
Like, I'm not a good faker.
I'm not a good liar.
do this,
you're so strong, trish...
- I'm not doing it.
- ...With one hand.
I'm not doing it
with one hand.
I've cut down
a lot of trees in montana.
I'm not gonna let
anybody tell me
what to do.
I'll take your suggestion
And if I feel like
it's something I wanna do,
yeah, I'll do it.
But if I don't,
I'm not going to do it.
Period.
this is, like,
one of the greatest tools.
We have used this tool
for everything.
Do you hear that?
I heard
a slight crack,
which is good.
is that tree ready?
Is this tree coming down already?
yeah, we're doing it.
Dude, this thing's going down.
ooh, baby!
amber,
get out of there.
Oh, it's going! Whoo!
It's going! It's going!
in your face, amazon!
cut down a tree today!
cut down a tree today!
bam, bam, bam, bam!
oh! Is that
a hornets' nest?
- it's out of the water.
- no!
- oh, no!
- fudge!
one of us
is gonna have to get a stick
and hit it in.
- I'll do it.
- Are you gonna
knock it in?
- Yeah, I'll go knock it down real quick.
- - oh, my god.
I'm gonna get
as close as I can
to knock it over in the water.
All right, careful,
some of the hornets
are still flying out, so...
I see it.
if she gets
stuck in the mud
she's going to get lit up!
oh, god.
here comes
the hornets.
yeah,
they're coming out.
Amber, you better
get out of there!
Oh, my gosh.
ow! Ow!
Oh, they're getting me!
hurry up, amber, go!
Amber, go!
holy , amber,
You better get the
out of there!
I think
that's as bad as...
- ow! Ow!
- hurry up, amber!
- Go, amber, go!
- - oh, they're getting me!
They're coming after her
and they're gonna
come up here after us.
They're still coming after me.
oh, my god.
Are you okay?
Yeah, I've got, like,
a couple of stings.
They would not stop
following me.
I was in panic mode.
My girls are just
looking at me like I'm crazy
I'm screaming.
I'm hitting them off of me.
- You okay?
- Yeah. They bit me
on my ears. Damn!
Your ears?
I think I got bit
about ten times.
- How's it look?
- oh, it looks swollen.
Right here.
All the little red bites.
Bit me here. Um, right there.
Those are the bite marks.
Bit me on my back.
I am on fire all over my body.
It hurts really bad
right there.
Okay. Tree,
half a hornets' nest down.
- we killed it.
- We need to come back tomorrow...
- Yes.
- ...And then
we'll do it again.
- Yeah.
- I'm gonna go
to the water...
...And get
in the water
to cool these bites,
- 'cause my neck is on fire.
- yeah.
- cool.
- all right, guys.
Amber decided to
knock the hornets' nest
off of its post on the tree.
You could say
that she had it coming.
My ears are on fire.
My neck. Oh, god.
Oh, my god.
I am in so much pain
right now.
- they're still swarming.
-yeah.
They're all over the tree.
- We'll definitely have to
take a break from...
- Yeah.
...Trying to knock
the rest of that off.
Let's this fire going.
Hope it doesn't
burn my shelter down
while I'm gone.
Being out here alone
sucks, man.
It's not only
because of the fact
That you have to
do all the work alone,
but just for me, you know,
I'm an extrovert.
It's hard to see the joy
in all of it
when you're by yourself.
Today I am going to go out
and scout for some resources
This jungle's a whole networ
of different ecosystems,
With different resources
And hopefully some fruits
and things like that
And other things
that I can utilize out here
But really I'd be lying
if I said
I wasn't just looking
for any sign of life.
Any sign of life at all,
anywhere else in this jungle
someone to join me.
I have a terrible
sense of direction,
But one thing I can do
is keep the river
on my right,
So that's the one thing
that'll help me
from getting lost.
If I went straight back
into the jungle right now,
I would never
find my way back.
I'm gonna
head over there.
I'm just gonna
go look at the nest.
yeah,
I'm gonna go with you.
I would like
to check that out.
that hornets' nest
was a nightmare.
I woke up and I was like,
"nice!" I didn't scratch them
or itch them.
They're all over my body.
They look like penny tags
with little dots
in the middle.
So, we decided to go back
and finally get
the nest off the tree
So we can start building
our dock.
how's the hornet nest?
- it looks empty.
-it does look empty.
what?
I don't see
any hornets in there.
You would have known
if the hornets
were still there.
- They would have been out.
- Yeah.
There's nothing in there,
but there's five million ants.
They're all coming out.
I'd rather focus on
the hornets first.
Well, there's no hornets
in there.
Well, these are fire ants
and they bite and they burn.
So now we have to really
come up with a plan
to knock that off.
there's no hornets
in there.
- I just wanna make 100% sure.
- - they're not in there.
I guess you're right.
Let's start throwing stuff
at it.
damn!
dammit!
- sorry, guys.
- it's fine.
coming in
with reinforcements.
no,
that's my firewood!
- It's going down.
- No, that is
really good firewood.
-Nah, it's going down.
-No, it's really...
I swear to god!
We'll get more!
-We'll get more.
Come on, come on.
-No, but this is gonna be...
this is a burner
all night long.
- Oh, come on.
- I really like this.
Come on.
just do
a different one.
dammit.
What we could do
is get the bamboo
And hit it
and just keep hitting it.
I can hold the end,
jen, while you smash
the front.
I'll hold the end for balance.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- start stabbing the out of them.
- - Yeah.
Just watch they don't
get on the bamboo
And start coming up.
Careful.
there we go.
That's a good chunk.
Ooh, that sounds good.
- it looks better.
- yeah, it looks great.
It's all coming up.
- Ants for everybody.
- We have ants flying.
Great job. That looks good.
all right, I'm gonna
go cut down a tree now
So we can start
building our raft.
The plan is build a dock
And then take apart the doc
at the end and use it
as a raft.
It's a two-for-one
price type deal.
We get a raft
and also a dock set up.
I wanna be right there
in the middle with the raft
So we may have to create
other logs to attach
To the top of the tree
and strap them on
As we walk across it.
The girls haven't built a ra
on any of their challenges
before.
I have a ton of experience
with building rafts
So hopefully they'll listen
to my guidance.
Jen, do you wanna
come look at this tree
with me really quick?
- Sure.
- Trish, do you wanna
come look, too, babe?
I'm taking a break.
I think amber's very confident
in her skills and her
experience out here,
However I have knowledge
that amber does not.
I know that jen has knowledge
that I do not.
We're all in this together.
We're trying to get to
the same place.
We have the same goal,
so I wish her leadership
Was a little less...
I don't know. Bossy?
I'm out here,
I'm searching for food
And I came across
some water vine.
It holds a tremendous
amount of water, like,
Half a liter in almost, like
three or four feet,
So I gotta cut it at one end
cut it at the other again,
Then lay it down
and then I can lift it up
And a little bit of gravity
feeds water into me.
It's a little bitter.
It tastes earthy
But it's fresh.
Got about a cup and a half
of water straight from
mother earth.
It's just nice
how nature provides
when you need it most,
But gonna keep on trucking.
I'm out here on a mission
right now, so I'm gonna
do the best I can
To kind of put something
on the table.
I'm gonna tread round here
for probably
Another hour,
hour and a half or so
'cause I got
a long trek back to camp.
It looks like
there's an opening
over on the other side,
So I'm gonna kind of
hug this ridgeline,
Go all the way around
and see what's over there.
Getting dense.
I'm walking through
the jungle and I'm not
finding too many resources.
The elevation
is changing a lot.
This terrain
is rough and dense
But the higher elevation
is nice.
Whoa.
The ground is a little drier
Pockets where there's sun
is nice, too.
Not so dank and still
like it is around my shelter.
temperature drops
considerably out here at
night-time when it rains
So I just wanna
make sure I'm prepared.
If we get big storms
It might roll from
the afternoon into the night
Or if we get, uh...
Sorry, I've got a fire ant
on my nuts.
They're ruthless,
those little things.
Ow.
Is that humans?
oh, what is that?
Is that humans?
oh, what is that?
Oh!
I think we got some monkeys
or something going on
over here.
- Is that a shelter?
- Is that a person?
what?
People! How're you doing, man?
- Oh, yes.
- I'm dan.
It's nice to meet you, man.
- Nice to meet you.
- It's so good to see someone.
How you been going, man?
I've been going, man.
- Is it just you?
- it's just me.
It's been days
of just talking to myself.
me too.
How long have you
been by yourself for?
Um, like, six days.
Yeah, that's crazy.
For me the word that I've used
to describe it so far
is just brutal.
he seems
like a good guy.
Strong, determined
and positive.
I couldn't be more happy
at the moment.
I got a big pyramid
that was designed for three,
Bone dry inside
all day yesterday
when it was pouring.
Like, you could sleep
without getting a drip
on you.
that sounds amazing.
- Got a dock built out
into the water.
- Yeah, nice.
I've gotten a big bird
and a snake.
Caught a couple of fish
out of there,
But it sort of
dried up recently.
I've just been setting
passive lines
And every day I've been
getting, like, three fish.
- Like the wolffish?
- All wolffish, that's it.
Dan's been explaining his camp
and obviously it doesn't
take much
For it to be better
than what I had set up
- I even have a tomato garden.
- Where did you get a tomato?
I ate a bunch of seeds
before I started.
- They're growing.
- That's the best.
Yeah, if you wanna
come hang out
at my place.
You don't wanna move in here?
is that what
you're saying?
- Is that what you're saying?
- maybe not.
Shelter's really good.
He's already got a bed
ready there for me.
All right, so, you're happy
if I come stay with you
for a bit?
- Please, please.
- Yeah?
I could really use it.
having a partner
is definitely gonna
make life easier
For the both of us.
A lot of the time
when you're alone
You just get through
the essential chores.
Just that division of labor
makes life easier.
I have a whole collection
of tools now.
Yeah, me too,
they left everything.
So I've got... Rod left
his bow and arrows here,
Including a fishing one.
- Okay.
- He also left his machete.
- Gary left his pulaski
right there.
- Hell, yeah.
We've got fire starters,
machetes for days.
We have an absolute cache
of weapons right now.
All right, so, I gotta
grab some stuff from here.
Basically just taking
all of the man-made stuff.
I'll grab this quiver.
I feel like
conan the barbarian.
Do you have
anything like that?
- It's just to lift
the pot off the...
- yeah, let's keep it.
It's a nice rack.
That's inappropriate.
- I don't have to deal with this.
- Can we call this off?
all right,
let's move out.
I honestly feel like
I'm walking into a war.
Just walking into battle.
- No one would mess with us right now.
- - no.
this tree
looks really good.
Let me cut this one down,
But I want you to know
that this tree
Is going to fall that way
because look at the bow.
It is going a little bit
already, yeah.
so, the next step
for making the dock
We have to chop down a tree
That has enough buoyancy in
That will be the best
for our raft to float.
I've back my battle buddy,
jen, with me and she's been
a great helper.
Whoo-hoo.
I am making a net,
a scoop net
And we're gonna use this ne
for both the pond
and the river.
Hopefully it'll hold up
To the things that have teeth
in the river, but...
It'll be a multi-purpose net
To scoop up bait fish
and maybe even piranha.
We could definitely
get a piranha with this.
Just can't keep it
in the net too long
'cause I'm sure
it'll bite right through
This fishing line.
Go a little more.
do it.
Ah!
It's gone that way.
Watch out, move!
Timber!
Oh, no.
- Well...
- dammit, right?
Can we cut it down?
We just have to be careful
because the second
That goes down more,
This is coming
all the way down.
- Correct.
- So, we need,
like, an escape plan
From that little tree.
The only thing we're gonna get
is that way.
Amber and I are cutting down
the tree for our dock and raft
And we get it down
but it's stuck on the trunk
And it's also stuck
in the trees above.
go, amber.
yeah.
It may end up rolling
this way more, though,
-Because it's gonna...
-no, it is. That's good.
It's okay.
yeah. I think it's...
we just have to
move faster than
the damn tree.
yeah, so maybe
you go behind, to your left
- And it'll come down this way.
- whoa.
you're doing good.
- Is it move at all or no?
- No.
- It's not gonna work.
- It's so unpredictable.
we're expelling
all this energy
But it's worth it
because we know
We need this tree in the water
To help out with our dock.
We need enough strength
on the branches
to wedge it off.
That's all we can do.
Or I can keep cutting
at an angle so it slides.
Does that make sense?
I can cut up on the tree base
- So that it has...
- a little bit more...
The weight, yeah.
We'll talk to trish about
what we're doing
And see if she can fish
while we finish it?
What a bust.
- Hey, trish.
- Yeah?
we may need you
to fish.
We are having
a situation with the tree.
- Yeah.
- it's cut down
But it doesn't wanna
come off the base
And we worked on that
for a while
Where we're just
spent right now.
- Mmm-hmm.
- it's bad, trish,
Like, it's stuck
on its weight.
If you wouldn't mind
fishing while...
Oh.
Amber's giving orders,
delegating tasks
Without asking anybody
what they wanna do,
Just saying,
"hey, this needs to be done."
I am exhausted.
If I tell them,
"hey, I need you
to go fishing,"
It just becomes frustrating
that they're just like,
"nope, I'm gonna do this,"
And I can't have
the pressure on me every day,
Going out fishing
when I'm attempting
To build a raft.
well, welcome home.
I like
the sounds of that.
- This is even pretty.
- right?
you got
the nice background.
Like, it's sort of
framed in by the tree.
Got the little snail shell
accents.
Amazon deco.
As I arrive I'm looking arou
And it really is
a beautiful place.
The shelter is amazing.
He's done a really good job
building that up
But more than that,
the shelter is framed
By this backdrop of this
massive tree
And it's just impressive
in and of itself.
Good work doing all this, too.
I'm proud of you, man.
Thanks. It's been a lot.
I'm really impressed
by what dan's done so far.
It's way better in relation
Not just the things
that are built
But the environment as well
and the resources,
The food that's available.
I feel like I'm gonna
really be able to add
to that for him.
It's gonna allow me
to do some stuff that I'm...
That I do well naturally.
Fishing is one of
those things.
I'd like to try
and get something
With a little bit
more fat in it,
Whether it be a capybara
or something like that.
I'll show you the dock.
Can check the lines.
This part here
needs to be reinforced.
With much weight on it
it's gonna fall over.
you feel like
that's gonna go in
if I stand on it?
- probably.
- probably.
No offence.
no, none taken.
I know what I weigh.
but I just have
lines tied up to this.
yeah, we can
set a bunch of lines up.
yeah,
we can set a ton.
- out that way.
- Yeah.
Well, very nice. Good job.
I like it.
I'll show you
the garden.
They should produce fruit
in about 40 days from now.
- That direct sunlight
is what they need?
- Yep.
I love the fact
that dan's got
A little tomato garden
out here.
I'm not an expert
in tomato plants,
But if they can fruit in time
that's gonna be...
That's a little gift
right there.
Well, I am very impressed.
- Come take a load off.
- I think you've done great.
back home
after the scouting mission
Which turned out to be
an overwhelming success.
I couldn't be happier
about the partner
I did find.
Waz is a great guy.
He's solid and determined
and he's completely
unwavering
From the goal
of finishing this challenge
Which is exactly
the type of person
That I wanna be
surrounded with right now.
Kind of feel like
a weight has been
lifted off my shoulders
After being out here alone.
Well, thank you
for inviting me to your home.
thank you for coming.
So glad to have company.
It smells like the jungle.
I've probably explored
almost ten miles
North and south, east and we
on my side of the river
Looking for resources and..
I'm kind of
at my jungle weight right no
I've lost
a lot of my water weight.
Still got some fat on me,
so...
Not a lot but enough.
Survival is something
you gotta take
One day at a time
and I'm not gonna stop.
I never stop.
That's why I'm...
I'm a legend for a reason.
Got some still water.
Less bog, more kind of
shallow lake zone.
This is prime spot for caiman
and caiman nesting.
I'm liking the environment
that I'm in right now.
It screams
carnivore-dinosaur,
So, you know, fingers crossed
we come across something.
Oh, wow.
so, I found
a mound of debris
Right by the water's edge.
It looks like a caiman nest.
It's super dangerous
to approach any
crocodilia nest,
Whether it's caiman,
alligator or crocodile.
They're extremely protectiv
and they will defend
their nest
Against anybody and anything
I gotta
keep my head on a swivel.
They will erupt
out of the water,
Mouth open, hissing, snarling
And they'll protect it
with their lives.
check it out.
That's a caiman egg
right there.
How amazing is that?
I can't tell
if it's fertilized or not.
Caiman out here
get to about six-eight feet.
All crocodilian species
are very aggressive
and protective
When it comes to their nests.
They'll build this debris hu
basically around their eggs
And it regulates
the temperature of the eggs
So they don't have to be the
And depending on
the temperature of the nest
Determines the sex
of the caiman,
So if mama's around,
which I'm sure she is
'cause they always are.
I'm a little concerned
Mama would come
rushing out of that water,
Like, jurassic park styl
so,
I found a caiman nest.
If mama's around,
I'm surprised
She hasn't made her presence
known yet.
Back home if you get within
three feet of a nest
Within a minute mama dukes
is right there, up on you.
I don't know a whole lot
about caimans
But I grew up with alligator
and worked with them
for years.
This is the first time
I've ever approached
a crocodilian nest in my life
And not had the mom
try and bite my face off.
Even in the swamps,
when we're cruising
on our airboats,
If we get too close to one
the mom will attack
the airboat.
That's how protective they are
of their nest.
Now, looking at these...
They don't look fertilized.
There's almost
two yoke membranes
on each end of the egg
And usually,
when they're fertilized,
They start getting softer,
the shell itself
And you'd be able to see,
like, an embryo in there.
The good news is
I'm gonna take these
back to camp with me
And have a little
hard-boiled egg party.
I got about a dozen and a ha
caiman eggs
And there's probably
about another 18 eggs
Left in the nest.
Yeah, good day.
So, spirits are high.
I wanna fish,
but I think today's
project for me
Is gonna be
putting that bed in
And I'm gonna get
a big surfboard like yours
From over there
that we saw on the way in
And put it over here.
Just I think that I'll be
a bit more comfy on that
Than these slats and also...
- yeah.
- - I need a bit more width, you know?
Then we'll have
a bed over there
And a place to put
all of your stuff back there.
Yeah.
This can be the weapons rack.
I think we're gonna
get started by trying
to get waz a new bed.
He's been sleeping
on these slats last night
Which are about
as comfortable as they look.
Yeah, I can see how this...
I feel like
it used to be lighter.
drop it.
This is a buttress root
from a tree
That I'm gonna use as a bed
The bed that's in there,
it's not really wide enough.
I've got
pretty broad shoulders
So I'm gonna build another b
That's just a little bit
more comfy
And it's gonna
fit me a little bit better.
All right, time to go to work.
time to go to work.
Even though I took
some weight of this thing
- It's still...
- yeah.
It's still wet.
It'll be heavy.
One, two, three.
on all of my challenge
so far
I've really carried
all of the weight
on my own shoulders
For the most part
And to have a partner
that's, like, capable
And hard-working
and motivated,
It's amazing to have
someone like that around
To help share the load.
yes. Got my surfboard.
I can't sleep on it yet,
Gotta work out a few things
Take off some of the bumps
And smooth out
some of the grooves,
and all that sort of stuff.
First of all,
what I'm doing here
Is just mixing
a bunch of clay
with some water
So I've got a thick soup,
And this is gonna get
poured over the gaps
And, sort of, leak in
and join everything together.
I don't want it
to be too watery,
'cause then it will never dry.
I really need
that perfect consistency,
Where it's still able
to drip through,
But it's gonna set eventually.
Feel like patrick swayze.
It's looking pretty good.
Got there,
that's done and done.
That's my bed.
Job... Done.
I'm gonna do some fishing,
So I'm gonna get set up
some passive lines.
I'll take a couple of hooks
and see if I can retie 'em.
to set
these passive lines,
It takes zero energy,
Which is pretty significant,
Especially when we've been
out here not eating
a whole heck of a lot.
Yeah, I got four hooks ready.
But we're trying
to trap and hunt things
within pretty close range.
whatever fish we get
out there
Are gonna be definitely
another good sign
And a bump
in the right direction.
need to get this fire going
get a nice bed of coals.
I got about a dozen and a ha
caiman eggs,
And there's probably
about another 18 eggs left
In the nest.
That, right there,
That's four days' worth
of food,
So I'm gonna boil these up,
see how that is,
I've never had
boiled caiman eggs before,
And, hopefully, they're
just like hard-boiled eggs
at home.
It's probably between
20 and 36 grams of protein,
right there,
Which is the equivalent to
about a small chicken breast
So that's substantial.
All right.
First taste of caiman egg.
It's the egg white,
Just like in a chicken egg.
Mmm.
And it tastes
just like an egg white
in a chicken egg.
Oh, my god, that's amazing.
And then this is the yolk.
Oh!
Out of all the things
I expected to eat out here,
I didn't expect
to eat caiman eggs.
So this is new.
That was a meal, right there.
Thank you, mrs. Caiman.
- Wanna take it for a test ride?
- - yeah.
All right, here we go,
We're gonna test it out,
See if there's anything
we can get in our net.
It looks awesome.
jen and I finished
tying up the net,
And I think it's gonna be
a good little addition
To our tools that we have
out here.
We're gonna use this net
for both the pond
and the river,
See how she works.
We just gotta be careful
we don't scoop it
on the sticks, you know?
Should we get in,
or do it from the top?
well, it goes
through the water okay.
Amber might need
the net already.
- See, there are plenty...
- Mmm.
...Right in there.
it might be
a little too small
for this net,
Ones that are walking
away from me.
Got you!
I think the holes might
just be a little too big
For this group of fish,
- You know, these little ones?
- Mmm-hmm.
I see one little hole,
One little, like,
bigger hole, right here.
One fish.
- It's all I got.
- what, did you get one?
Yeah, I got a fish.
He's pretty awesome.
bye, it was great.
that gill net is not working.
They had to work on it,
They didn't wanna fish,
They had to build
this gill net.
Well, weaving
ain't feeding us.
This is good firewood.
it's gotta be
almost 6:00 in the morning,
And I'm coming for a fish.
Oh, lots of movement
down here this morning.
Back at the fishing hole.
We got
lots of static lines set,
So I'm gonna check them,
first off.
There's a lot of challenges
involved in fishing out here
Everywhere's different,
And they've all got
their own nuances,
And it's just a case
of learning the water system
Learning the fish.
No.
Yeah, lots of nibbles,
no bites,
So I think it's
just the smaller fish
out there.
Yeah, I'm not sure.
I'm considering maybe
trying to fish
That little patch up that way,
See if we get any more luck
up there.
I might just clear the reeds
out of the way,
Like I did at my other place.
Um, and seeing
if that makes a difference.
Give this a break
for a little bit,
And go fish that little bit.
Nothing on the fishing
this morning.
no?
- You see that, waz?
- What?
Little... It's on
the opposite shore a bit.
Go on.
What is it?
A vulture hanging out
in that tree, up to the left.
I was thinking of making
a bird trap.
- nice one.
- - it's that area with the bait
That the vultures frequent.
I'm not a hunter,
So I try to rely
on my biological experience,
Get to know all the pattern
of the animals in the area,
And what attracts them,
that kind of thing,
And the one animal
that I know is reliably coming
to a certain spot
Is the vulture.
It's coming to my bait spot
It's learned
that I've been leaving
food out for it,
So it keeps coming back
to that same spot,
So I think I'm gonna try
to build an ojibwa bird trap
Excited to try this out.
It's a native american desig
And, basically, it's just,
like, a big post
with a hole in it,
With a peg that fits
perfectly in there.
I'll have the snare wire
laying on that piece of woo
And onto a weight
that's suspended
off the ground.
Theory is,
A big bird will come down
and land on the perch,
Ideally for some bait,
And when it lands,
It'll knock this down.
The bird's instinct
is to keep grabbing
onto the stick
For a minute,
while it's trying to fly away.
When this falls down,
The weight'll drop,
And the snare wire that's
on the stick will tighten
right around its legs.
Come on, whittled enough.
There we go, did it.
Just needs a weight.
that one you're
about to stand on,
That's the one I suggest
using the weight.
I'm really impressed
by what dan's done so far,
And obviously, in survival,
Failing to plan is
planning to fail.
Dan says there's a chance
we can snag a vulture,
Down by our fishing hole,
So executing that plan is
the best chance of survival
put it right here.
- Easier than I thought it would.
- - mmm.
they've been coming
all the way in and then eating
- The food off the thing,
right?
- Yeah.
this has been
our bait station, here.
We've been gutting the fish
And leaving our bait here
And chopping bits out of it.
Almost accidentally,
I've sort of been training
Vultures and hawks
and other things
to come to this area
And pick up the scraps,
So I'm trying to take
advantage of that pattern
a little bit.
Hopefully, it won't fall out
And ruin my plan.
That's fine.
I'll make a better design.
Okay.
Well, I think
you've done good, buddy.
- Thanks for your help, man.
- Of course.
and what are you gonna
bait it with, uh?
- red is a good color.
- Yeah.
all right.
Baited and ready.
I'm excited
about this trap.
Well, the fire's rolling.
- how's it coming?
- It's coming.
I gotta boil
some water, babe, behind you.
The fish that are
in the pond right now,
As far as bait fish,
they're a little too small
for these holes,
So, hopefully,
closing some of the holes
on this net
Will give us the opportunit
to try it again tomorrow
And actually keep the fish
in the net this time,
So we're gonna make this wor
- Are you doing anything, jen?
- No, I can help with the net
and watch the boil.
- All right, you wanna do that
with me?
- Yeah.
- Tie these up?
- - yeah, wherever you see a spot.
my energy is low,
But I believe in this raft.
We need it.
The only thing we need
is firewood, if you guys can
get a chance to venture out.
I'm gonna try
to bring some back too.
When you see firewood
while you're working on
the net?
- no, when I go out.
- totally teasing.
Any time you're around,
And you see we're low
on small sticks again, yeah,
- So any type of anything, I would haul it.
- - I was just saying,
- If you're venturing out and you see some little things.
- - of course.
I try to build a pile
- Throughout the day.
- - I never come back empty-handed, so...
I really wanna get
to the same place
with my team, I mean,
They're my team.
That's who I started with,
And that's who
I wanna finish with.
Don't tell me,
"go get firewood"
when I'm done,
- Like, no, I'm gonna do
the net, and...
- Right.
- ...When I see firewood,
I pick it up, like always.
- Right.
But I think some things
might be coming up.
I'm trying to keep
that jersey girl locked down
But I feel her, man,
she's coming.
she's on her way.
I'm gonna go
cut down that tree,
And I'm gonna get
the other tree down.
I'm willing it to happen.
So, I'm looking at these.
It looks like it's stuck
right here, on this tree,
And the pressure,
Way that tree is putting
pressure on it,
It's gonna go this way,
So I need to come
on this side and cut it down.
Oh, god, this is gonna be
horrible when it falls.
Okay.
Little sketchy, huh?
I've been cutting down
this tree,
And I'm hoping it will fall
on top of the other one,
Knocking it down
so we can use it.
I hear it cracking,
just a little bit.
Oh!
Okay, okay, okay.
Timber!
Yeah!
Well, kinda.
This one didn't go
all the way down.
fudge!
She's structured
and likes a plan,
And unless she sees...
- Okay, she wants a plan,
but if it's her plan.
- Yeah.
Like, it will slide down
if I keep doing this.
Yeah, it's moving.
yeah, I don't like
the delegation,
I don't like...
- I'm not a subordinate.
- mmm.
I'm not in the military
with you.
- Yeah.
- A good leader will ask,
- Or a good teammate...
- Yeah.
- A good teammate will ask...
- Right.
...Not delegate.
been trying to move it.
I don't know
if I'm that strong.
But let me see
if I can do it.
Ta-da!
I did not think
I was that strong.
Yeah!
Cutting down trees
in the amazon, ladies!
It's not the amber show,
it's not the amber team,
- It's our team, right?
- Mmm.
I just... I'm getting
a little bit of resentment.
You wanna come see?
Are you guys coming?
This is a joyous moment.
Right up there on your left
is some more of that fruit.
Oh, yeah, look at this.
Let's try cutting
into a couple.
yeah, let's see
what it's like.
too hard.
that was just
a liquid inside.
- the liquid's really good.
- It is?
but it's damned
near impossible to, like,
Get it open without spilling
it everywhere.
Kinda like coconut water.
grab that.
Back in the forest,
where we've been collecting
palms for a shelter,
I've seen the palm trees
that grow the tagua fruit.
We are hurting
for the nutrients right now
And, sure enough, there's
a lot of them on the ground.
- Nice little hit, isn't it?
- Ooh, that is nice.
That's like drinking
a gatorade.
You can feel the nutrients
of these, like,
Fruit just coursing
through our veins,
And, um, it's kinda like
an energy drink.
It's amazing.
- That is good.
- Mmm.
- ooh, ooh, ooh,
ooh, ooh, ooh. Dan.
- Yeah.
Vulture coming in to land
by the fish trap.
gonna eat some vulture?
vulture stew.
Let's see if I can creep up
on one of 'em.
Whoa!
Oh, my god!
the xls,
or xl success metric,
Weighs each group's
collective skills
and survival status
To determine
a likely percentage
Of reaching their 40
and 60-day goals.
Desperate for protein...
I've lost
a lot of my water weight.
Still got some fat on me,
But not a lot.
...Steven pushed
deep into caiman territory..
it's super-dangerou
to approach any caiman out,
They're extremely protective
leading
to an unexpected find.
that's
a caiman egg, right there.
...And a much-needed
protein score.
Ah, thank you, mrs. Caiman.
as a result,
His individual xls success
rating rises from 56 to 64%
After a week alone
in the amazon...
Is that a shelter?
Is that a person?
dan discovered
waz's camp.
Do you wanna come
hang out at my place, like?
Don't wanna move in here?
...Forming
a new partnership.
I couldn't be more happy
at the moment.
...And new opportunities
for protein.
all right.
Baited and ready.
and their first team effort
may be about to pay off.
their xls rating
is recalculated
for a two-man team
And set at 54%.
With a new mission to find
bigger protein sources...
the stock is unnecessary,
Because it's
what will provide.
...Tensions
on the all-female team
are rising.
use one-handed.
are you micromanaging me?
I'm taking a break.
Trying to keep
that jersey girl locked down
I feel her, man, she's coming.
leading
to conflicting strategies.
I don't think
that gill net is gonna do
with piranha.
as a result,
Their team xls drops
from 60% to 41%.
timber!
Yeah!
It's not the amber show,
It's not the amber team,
it's our team.
you wanna come see?
I'm getting a little bit
of resentment.
this is a joyous moment!
I hear that there's
something down there,
I bring my bow out,
but I don't get there
in time.
Looks like a vulture has
just taken the fish guts away.
Missed it by a hair.
You have those vultures
well-trained, though,
I'll tell you that.
Now we've just got
to get it to land on the trap.
What do you want me to do?
Um, you mind
just holding the weight?
All of the protein I've
sourced in past challenges
Has been opportunistic,
And I've had luck doing that,
But this is
a little bit more calculated
You can't starve 40 days,
And you're hungry,
So I'm gonna keep trying
to, uh,
Tweak it a little bit
And make sure that snare wraps
around the feet of whatever
lands on that trap.
That's perfect.
I was relying more
on jamming the peg in there
Rather than letting
the knot do the work.
right,
let's see what else
do we need here.
Okay, I just wanna
finish this, you know?
- Yeah, me too.
- Move on with this.
I just need to tie this.
Oh, that could be
really good firewood,
Look at that.
That looks legit.
I could feel trish's tensio
in the shelter.
Seem like they're just getti
frustrated with me,
And all I'm doing is working
This is our moment
to, like, really push us,
And it seems like they just
wanna sit down and work
on a net.
I just feel like we're gonna
get worse,
And I don't know
what to do about it,
And I can't help them
work on a net all day.
How's it coming?
It's coming.
That is getting close
to being done.
okay, I'm gonna head
back over there
and start cutting,
If you guys wanna come
join me at any time...
To start breaking down
the logs.
Yeah, we're just finishing up
with this.
Um, you guys could consider
getting the thick cordage
for me,
So that I can start tying
'em down,
It would really help me,
- Tying it all together.
- Think if everybody
sees cordage, grab cordage.
- Yeah.
- You see firewood,
grab firewood.
you know,
I really need cordage
like tomorrow, though.
Don't give me tasks
and expect me
to follow your orders,
'cause it's not gonna happen.
I'm finishing the net,
'cause that's
what I've started,
And I wanna finish that.
- Okay.
- And when I'm done, I'll...
- So you don't have to tell me.
- Yeah, this wasn't me
Telling you guys,
it was just, like,
"hey, if you guys can..."
- Well, it kinda feels
like that, a little bit.
- I know, but...
That's why I'm a little edgy,
'cause I wanna just do
my own pace
And do my own thing.
We have a structure.
Food, water, fire, shelter.
We have to do it.
I just wanna do things
at my own pace,
When I wanna do that.
- That's okay, I understand.
- I know what needs
to be done,
I know we need to eat,
I know we need water,
I get that. I'm not out
off, just like,
You know, hanging around
and doing nothing, like,
I'm tying a net
so that I can get bait
So we can go fishing.
- yeah...
- I'm tying a net so we can scoop piranha
Out of the water.
I've had a lot more challenges
than you.
- Yes, but you're not
the only one with experience...
- I have done this way longer.
- okay.
- - I can outdo you guys, I'm telling you.
- You guys have had a 21-day challenge.
- - right.
I have done probably 76 days,
total,
Not including this.
I'm telling you because
I love you guys
And I know you guys
are badasses,
And I just want us
to be a team.
It is a team, but I'm saying,
like,
Instead of delegating, like,
"you do this
and you do that..."
But nobody's saying that.
I just offered... Hey...
You don't have to look at me
like that and give me, like,
"whatever."
This...
I'm being serious, dude.
really don't wanna
argue with you, guys.
Whatever. I'm done, I'm done.
What is going on here?
Don't tell me,
"go get firewood."
I'm just not sure how...
What the happened
in that conversation?
Why don't you ask me?
Don't tell me.
We could be so frickin' epic,
here,
If we just worked together
as a team.
I just don't know how much
I can keep pushing myself.
wrap my head around,
But I'm deep in the middle
of the amazon jungle,
By myself, looking for food
It's just me out here
right now. It's just me.
There's nobody around.
This is a hollow tree.
I hear this, like, strange
sound coming from the tree.
I don't really know
what it is.
It's almost like heartbeats,
almost, so.
There's all these
little insect wings.
Something's been having
a good meal in there.
Aw,!
Oh, my...
Ew...
The jungle is nuts!
three miles nort
of steven's camp...
Time to go to work.
waz also finds
himself alone in the amazon
After a bountiful day
of fishing...
Yeah, boy.
...Ended in rod'
sudden sickness...
you're almost home.
Almost home.
...And emergency evacuation
gary left day two,
rod left this morning.
Basically,
it's the waz show now.
I thought I was good.
I thought I'd made it.
Definitely the plan today,
I'm gonna head back
to that other fishing hole
That was about an
hour-and-a-half walk away.
And I'm confident at that
other fishing hole,
I'll just be dragging fish
out of the water
Like we did last time.
But I am really hungry
right now
And I need some calories
in my belly.
If I do catch some fish,
I'm gonna cook them up
straight away, eat them,
And then do
a little bit more fishing
Before I've gotta leave
and come home.
You see the lake's starting
to appear through there?
It's tough me being
out here by myself.
I've got to do
all of the jobs.
There's no one to help.
It makes it difficult.
You can see the fishes
coming up
And grabbing stuff
at the surface.
But I'm not focusing on that
I'm focusing on
the little things
I have to do every day
to get me to 40 days.
This is what we saw
the other day
When we got down here.
Just a lot of movement
on the surface.
I'm gonna get myself set up
And I'm gonna get some food
out of this water.
It's a good news day,
we got a grub.
Man, that storm's gonna
be big, isn't it?
I can hear the rain.
You can hear this wall of ra
just coming towards me.
It's really ominous.
You've gotta work out if
the juice is worth the squeeze
On everything that
you do out here.
If I can catch food...
It's definitely worth it.
There he is.
Come on.
You all right? There we go.
I'm gonna keep this guy.
Come on, buddy.
one mile
to the south...
It feels like rain.
dan begins his
second day without a teammate.
And without
significant protein.
my biggest fear in the
challenges by far,
is being alone.
I'm about
to climb this tree.
There's big anthurium
leaves right there.
It's so nice to patch holes
in the shelter
while it's raining.
You just weave
one of these up
into the wall, and...
It stops it immediately.
It just keeps thundering
and lighting out.
It makes me panic inside
when I hear thunder
and lightning.
I think it's 'cause
my first challenge in mexico,
It got down to, like,
42, 43 degrees at night.
half of my body's numb
I think maybe I, literally,
have ptsd from that.
Out here in the amazon,
I mean,
There all kinds
of crazy things
living in every tree.
Ants can start raining
down on you
Or other biting insects.
Very dangerous.
Oh, boy.
Of course the rain
starts now, ah.
Raiding ants all over me.
Ugh.
Ugh. Uh, god...
Ants are huge.
Oh, no.
Ah.
I still hate the rain.
five miles south.
Oh, nice. Hell, yeah.
amber has led trish and jen
to a steady supply of fish.
We'll take you to the amazon.
but a difference
in priorities...
We really need
to work on our roof.
they just don't care.
I gotta get
the bed frame together,
And I gotta get enough vines
to put it together.
They've been working
on their beds
For, like, four, five days.
has revealed
cracks in the all-female tea
-There's a storm coming in.
It's raining.
-Yeah.
Do we have firewood?
we have whatever
we have from last night
that we didn't burn.
I think we should
take a break,
And we should collect
firewood for tonight
if it's gonna start raining.
I can do this if you want
to do firewood.
we have some firewood.
Yeah, but we need more.
finishing up
your shelter, preparing
for your environment,
Is crucial out here.
Even though I've been sayin
we need to reinforce
the shelter for multiple day
With the girls,
it's not sticking yet.
And I think, truthfully, it's
gonna have to rain
For them to see
the detrimental effects of it.
- Jen, do you want
to start looking for firewood?
- Sure.
All right, let's
be optimistic.
It's raining right now.
Let's go get firewood
and stop what we're doing,
And then, um, let's
get ready for tonight.
We'll go without food
for a little bit.
I think amber's
very competent in her skill
and her experience out here
But sometimes she just, like
Doesn't have
great communication.
Yeah, we need
to get the fire going.
Jen, you wanna sit down,
I'll bring these in,
- And you can start the fire.
- Sure.
it's the delivery.
It's how you say it.
Yeah, you guys,
we don't have much time.
It's gonna come down
pretty bad.
just in case
the fire goes out,
We'll have these
to start the fire.
A nice little tinder bundle.
They're wet,
but it's something.
It's better than
having nothing.
damn, that's a breeze.
it sure is.
Whoo, we're about to get wet.
And our roof is looking slim.
Yeah, let's bring in
those logs.
You might wanna
get in the shelter.
It's getting colder.
Holy crap.
Come on. One last bite.
Take it. There we go.
Aw. Just got a little
one on there.
I've got a couple of fish
up here on land,
But this storm that's coming
is massive.
The sky's really ominous.
It's getting really windy.
I think something massive I
coming in,
Which is a little bit
dangerous for me,
So I'm gonna get outta here
I've a full-size fish there
that'll fill my belly up.
I've got a smaller one,
And then half the one
we're using as bait.
I'll eat that as well. There
no need wasting that.
I'm gonna need
a little bit of firewood.
But I'm getting
that fire goin',
And I'm gonna
have fish in my belly.
the wind's pickin' up.
I hate thunder.
With all the rain,
there's no animals here.
Which makes sense,
'cause the animals
don't wanna be crotch deep
in water either.
It's cold.
Temperature drops 20 degrees.
Hypothermia is a real thing.
Window makers falling
in this canopy
is a real thing.
It's really important
I get back to camp
as soon as possible.
Venture out and get
those leaves that I cut.
Oh, it's so wet.
It's thundering and lightnin
out here right now.
I'm getting anxiety.
I'm running out
trying to pick leaves,
And just shore up the shelte
as best I can.
These leaves are
totally worth the effort.
I'm able to, like,
just in ten minutes,
Stick these up in all
the holes inside,
And totally waterproof
the inside of my shelter.
Ouch.
Fire is too hot.
Okay, that's enough. Over it.
Damn.
Whoa.
Oh, my god!
Storm's coming in pretty good,
But it just dropped me a nice
new piece of firewood
And some shingling
right into my front lawn.
Thank god I wasn't
standing there.
It knocked the top
of that tree right off.
Holy , that could
have killed me.
A good ten, 15 feet off
the top of that tree fell off,
but... I don't know,
Now it's probably
30-feet tall.
Man, my heart is
racing from that.
It's intense.
Bone dry inside here
right now.
I'm gonna try to ride out
the storm as best I can.
this is
one of the hard things
about being out here solo
Is the fact that I've had
to walk an hour,
Catch these fish,
walk an hour back.
And, uh, I get back to camp,
I can't just eat 'em.
I can't just put 'em on a fi
and eat 'em.
I've gotta set them down.
I've gotta clean them.
I've gotta go
collect firewood.
It's a lot of work between
catching those fish
and eating those fish,
And that's why it would be
nice having another person,
Um, and have that division
of labor a little bit
Where things just run a little
bit smoother and quicker.
Oh, it's hot in there.
You wanna cook the fish
all the way.
There's parasites in there.
There's bacteria in there.
It's definitely not
something I wanna do
Is put some raw fish
in my mouth.
That's a big risk.
If you get sick out here, it
gonna be coming out both end
From a survival perspective
It puts you in
a real bad situation.
It's so delicious.
I can take a lot
of joy from this,
But, like anything with life,
If you have someone
to share that moment with,
Especially the good moments,
Then it's always just gonna
be that little bit
more special.
So, it would be nice
to have someone here.
Right now, I'm just gonna
sit here and enjoy this.
it's super windy,
a total downpour,
So, we're all hunkered down
in our shelter.
Tryin' to keep our fire goin
It's pretty intense.
I think this is, like,
the craziest storm we've had
Since we've been here.
None of us are
going outside in this.
No, ah!
Half of my shelter's
holding up,
The other half isn't.
But I just found a little spot
that is the most protected.
it's been
raining all night.
I'd appreciate if it stopped
anytime now.
I'm getting wet
on my butt.
Yeah, it's so hard.
This is the hardest rain
I think we've had.
You could hear
the thunderstorms rolling in
As it was going dark,
And then just
a deluge of water.
Like, it just dumps
so much water so quickly,
It was insane.
And also, I've been
itchy all day.
There is flies, there's ants
there's mosquitoes.
All these things just
constantly barraging you,
Biting you, sucking
your blood out.
I froze my ass off last night.
oh, my gosh.
Look at your butt.
the rain brings out
every type of insect,
Every single bug
you could ever think of,
And puts it in your shelter.
- This is what happens to us.
- Look at all that blood.
It's like these flies
that she just killed
with her finger on me
- Is, like, they're
just...
- Bastards.
...Horrible. And evil.
These little bastards.
They just suck your life
all day long.
holy crap. What
a freakin' nightmare.
Everything's totally soaked
I mean, just
totally saturated.
Soaking wet ground.
It was just tempest death
noah's ark flood rain.
I mean, it was dumping.
I'm hungry.
Haven't had any protein
in the past couple days,
But, uh, I need to put a roof
on my shelter.
I wish there were palms here
It's the only way
to make it even in
the realm of waterproof.
But there's not, so, I'm
gonna have to debris it up.
Towards the river,
There's a big grass bed
that's dead
And kind of overcoming
these big fallen trees.
And I'm gonna use that gras
as the base of my debris.
Since there is water.
Water brings animals.
So, this is
extremely dangerous.
The smaller the debris is,
the more compact I can get I
The more compact it is,
the better for waterproofing
If I can get this base on,
And then lash it down
really tight,
It's gonna help
my waterproofing.
It's like the song says,
it's all about the base.
Slowly adding this layer
To the roof of my shelter.
Making sure it's even.
Making sure I can't see
my bed underneath.
Priority number one
now that the roof's done,
Fire, water, food.
definitely not goin
in the water.
It's really such a mess
after a storm.
today, we
came up with a plan
That we're goin'
to work on the roof,
Which is great,
and get it done.
I was
cold enough last night,
- I don't need
to be cold anymore.
- Yeah.
We have so many tasks
and necessary things to do,
But it's paramount right no
To, again, reinforce
the shelter
To make sure that
the other half is waterproof.
Are you okay?
- Yeah, are you ready?
- Yeah.
Let's just go grab
hella palms right now.
Okay.
I've been
mentioning it every day,
"hey, we need
to work on the roof.
We need to work
on the roof."
And finally, trish
and jen said, "yes."
They wanna learn.
They're willing to work.
Whatever we've gotta do.
If we stack enough
of them, it'll be worth it.
Okay.
I feel like trish
and amber are both
really strong survivalists.
But there's some tension.
So, I'm just glad that
we can work together
To reinforce our shelter.
Add more palms.
It's extremely beneficial
for the temperature inside
As well as if it
potentially rains.
And, so, we're gonna
strip it in the middle,
- Lay 'em like this,
and then weave.
- Yep.
- Okay?
- Yeah. Let's do that.
It's like a razor
going through this thing.
Hmm-hmm.
Ow! ouch!
Ooh. Ah!
Ooh. Ah!
God, I really
scratched my boob.
That looks pretty gross.
That was pretty painful!
- Oh, trish.
- Yeah?
I totally hurt my boob.
Oh, yeah. Oh, god,
it's right across your nip.
Yeah. All the way.
It hit me right there,
and like.
Ah, you poor thing.
That sucks.
That looks as if
you got cut by a cat.
Maybe it could have
been a cougar out there.
- I wasn't sure.
- Could've been.
I thought we were
the only cougars out here.
-Are you okay?
-Yeah, I'm fine.
Just it hurts.
I'm resilient enoug
to get past the pain
And just keep pushing forward.
Should we rack and stack 'em?
Definitely.
we've tried a lot
of different ways
with the shingles,
But, I mean,
these allow fuller coverage
Because they create
the full sheet,
So they should
still be protected
even when they dry out.
That's great and that
really covered so much.
We had so much open here,
it was bad.
the girls and I are
communicating with each othe
we respect each other.
I see them.
I know that they can be
beasts in the wild.
the shelter
is every single day.
You can't just
set it and forget it, so...
We are learning that,
and we are doing what we can
to make sure that we stay dry.
why don't we go
cut some palm nuts
And get some larva
and then we'll kinda
go from there.
- yeah.
- And get some good fish, set up a couple of lines
And try to get some
more protein for us to eat.
all right, team taj
let's rally!
I didn't sleep so well
Ironically, not because
of the rain...
Even though it poured
all night long,
but because I was itchy.
But there's one advantage
to all this rain,
I am going to make myself
a little garden.
At home
I work on really remote,
bio-secure islands
Which means we try really ha
to prevent any introduction
Of plants or animals to the
That might go invasive.
And as part of that,
we don't let people
eat tomatoes
For 48 hours before going
on to the islands.
Because seeds of tomatoes
can pass through
digestive tract
Totally intact
and sprout really well.
So out here,
I thought of doing
some reverse biosecurity.
so I ate
a bunch of tomatoes
before starting the challenge.
All right. Last night
before we start the challenge.
I'm trying to squeeze in
one last snack.
A nice, big juicy tomato
with seeds that just so happen
To pass through
your digestive tract.
When I started the challenge
and went to the bathroom
for the first time,
I mixed it with some dirt,
And there's a bunch of
a little tomato sprouts
coming out of the ground.
To my surprise!
So I am going to bring
naked and afraid
From the paleolithic
to the neolithic.
This is the sunniest spot
I can find.
I think tomatoes
need full sun.
If I can start naked and
afraid agriculture out her,
that would be amazing.
Making little
terraces here.
This is going to be great.
Okay.
And I couldn't be more proud.
Check it out,
the little sproutlets!
Put a little water.
Grow big and strong.
I don't think anyone's
evert tried to have a garden
on any challenge before ever.
But to have a garden
and have it actually
produce food for me...
It will probably take
about 40 days
For these to produce fruit,
I'm guessing.
That's an evolutionary
human existence.
That's a big deal.
And there you have it.
Agriculture.
We'll see how they do.
today is a fishing day
so even though
it's pretty frustrating
Having to make
and hour and a half walk awa
to get there,
I'm happy to do that
to get food in my belly.
For me, it's worth
walking through mud,
far away from camp,
If it means
getting some fish out
of that lake.
But unfortunately,
this morning,
I'm also having to deal wit
a whole bunch of fire ants,
just all over me all at once
And I don't even know
where they came from.
I'm not going to
get upset by it.
The number one thing
I want to focus on today
Is to get some food.
I don't know if I like this.
I've been down here
for a while,
And I've not even had
a nibble, not a bite. Nothing.
I haven't seen any splashes
in the water.
I don't know
what has happened.
I wonder how
this works, like...
Maybe something
to do with the storm?
Something's happened
where the fish
aren't biting anymore,
Which is a little bit strange.
I'm trying to work that out.
It's really weird
that just... Zero bites.
Doesn't make a lot of sense
It's like the fish
have just gone on holiday
or something.
Yeah, no, there's nothing.
hey,
this is kind of solid.
- it is solid.
- it's a good log.
think we can drag this puppy?
Bust it in a few big chunks.
all right,
looking good, beauties.
Let's go to the water
in the sun
And let's come up with
a game plan.
now that
we're working together
I'm gonna talk to the girls
About really expanding
our horizon and just,
You know, do caiman hunts,
get a bunch of fish
and getting done.
I'm thinking we should
consider fishing down here.
I think we'll have
better fishing on the river
Because the pond
is really limited.
Like, it takes us
about an hour or two hours
in the morning
And if we miss that window
coming out of here
- I bet we'll get
some big fish.
- Yeah.
- we should have a dock built.
- - yeah.
This could be
a good team project.
Let's build a little platform.
- Maybe, um, that platform
could turn into a raft.
- A raft.
So build the dock
that is, essentially,
A two-in-one piece with a raft
And then, um,
set up an area where
we can move hyacinths
And actually have
a square set out
So we can actually
just go there and fish daily.
I was thinking of starting
to maybe cut that tree
And have it just drop
right across the hyacinths...
- Mm-hm.
- ...And see
this how far we can get.
the biggest tree
in the amazon!
We see this tree
that's right by the edge
of the water
And it looks long enough
that it could go
nearly halfway across.
let's chop it down.
That thing is gonna be perfect for our dock.
Once we cut down the tree,
it will act as our pier
out to the deeper water.
Then we'll clear out
the hyacinth to create
an open fishing platform
And build the raft
that attaches to the tree
like a floating dock.
I'm staying here for 60 days.
This dock is so necessary
because we have to transitio
away from our ponds
That we have near our shelte
to the river.
It's what will provide.
We're gonna cut down
this damn tree
And we're gonna make
an amazing dock.
the rewards are
a dock will clear almost
All the way to the other sid
So we can open up
our exploration
And maybe find something new.
The risks, however,
are that it's a huge tree,
So it's a big undertaking,
And, um, it's gonna take days
to cut this down, it's huge.
I'm gonna
take some hacks
And then we can
rotate back and forth.
- Do you know what I mean?
- yeah.
I'm following the tree
so that it's easier for us
to snap it.
sure.
- this tree is solid!
- yeah.
When I'm hacking
into this tree, I'm, like,
"oh, my god, of course,
it has to be the hardest
Goddamn tree in the amazon."
But with my team,
we are unstoppable.
- Okay, jen, you're up.
- Okay.
- I think I put
a good dent in it.
- Yeah, you did.
- Keep it consistent and then
we'll saw a little, too.
- Okay.
Ooh, everything is moist.
The weather out here
is unpredictable.
It can be hot and sunny
and then rainy and freezing
the next moment.
I need to get more firewood
'cause last night
I burned through a ton of it
I wanted to keep the fire
big and strong
while it was raining.
A couple more trips
and I'll be satisfied.
I was just paranoid, so...
so, I really
don't have much left.
You know, I feel like
when you're out here
you're constantly reminded
That danger
is literally everywhere.
You know,
there's all kinds of things
on land that could get me,
So you still
have to be vigilant.
One snakebite,
one bite of something out he
Could take me
out of this challenge
in five minutes.
Oh! ow!
Jesus christ!
what the was that?
I think it was a scorpion. Ow.
Kinda feels like
scorpion bites.
there are over
50 types of venomous scorpio
in the amazon
With sting effects ranging
from intense burning
and swelling
To paralysis.
ugh.
Actually maybe
it was a scorpion.
I can feel it moving
through my foot, like...
Looking for firewood
to bring back to my shelter
And take one step
and my foot is burning.
It feels different
than the bee sting
'cause the pain's moving.
It is excruciating.
I just wanna, like, clean it
That fat little toe,
it's swelling up like crazy.
Yeah, I think I'm good
for collecting firewood
for now.
It's no joke.
I'm hearing so many birds
and creatures
And a lot of frogs tonight,
So, um, a lot happening
out there right now.
- Why don't I see him?
- Right here.
- oh, my god...
- hurry!
...He's huge!
We have to be really careful.
It could burn your hand.
- ha!
-ooh, nice!
Oh, he's peeing!
oop, oop, oop!
Oh, my god.
that is
the biggest frog
I've ever seen.
- wow!
- Oh, my god.
Look at the size
of those legs.
the smokey jungle frog
Can grow up to
eight inches long,
But secretes
poisonous toxins from its sk
as a defense mechanism.
Here he is. And I tied him up.
I tied him up
on his little waist.
I have him
chained to the tree.
And all the stuff
on the ground,
this white stuff,
Is from when
I caught the frog last night.
It, like, secreted
a whole bunch of liquid.
And, um,
it's all on the ground
even today. It's still here.
So I'm really glad
that we made the decision
To not do anything with him
last night while it was dark
and we didn't really...
Like, we couldn't
see anything.
You see all the white.
That's from
untying the cord
that I had around the frog
Which was on his skin,
so it's turned my hand white.
Is it worth killing him?
how did
your hands feel after
you washed them last night?
I had a cut on my hand
and it started to burn.
mm, yeah.
it's not
really that safe.
I don't have soap or anything
to really clean with
out here, so...
you're gonna
let him go?
- Yeah...
- That's your decision?
...I'm gonna let him go.
I think so.
hi, buddy. Good news,
You've been set free.
- All right, buddy.
- bye, buddy.
Do you wanna get
some mud in there
and get really deep with it?
No, it's good.
It's cleaned off.
- Okay.
- Yeah, it's good.
I have to go deeper and deep
into the unknown jungle.
And the deeper you go,
the thicker it gets, uh,
the more dangerous it gets.
I mean, we're in the jungle
I mean, the ground is alive
like, you look at it
and it moves.
From scorpions to spiders
to snakes, you know,
Just everything.
This place is wild.
I gotta go find food,
I have to find
where the animals are.
First couple of days
I was here,
I ran into this bog marsh.
It's a pretty good
distance away.
That's a perfect
little breeding area
for these caimans,
So I'm gonna see if
maybe I can call one in
Or find a nest or something
I'm gonna try and call caima
like I call alligators
back at home...
...And see if I can get 'em
to call back to me.
I don't know a whole lot
about caimans,
but I grew up with alligator
I grew up in florida, so...
Water moccasins
and alligators is my jam,
But here it's different,
it's harder.
It's nerve-racking.
I'm expelling
a lot of calories.
To have a really big
protein source
would be great right now,
But especially not having
really any food
for the past 48 hours,
I need a big score, baby!
ooh. Get down.
After we decided
to let the frog go,
We wanted to get
an early start
at chopping down that tree.
We're actually
doing pretty good.
oh, yeah!
Looks pretty deep.
I think if we spent
15, 20 minutes each,
we'll get the tree down.
like, this is
a really hardy tree.
look at this.
Can you see it?
- oh, with the hole at the bottom?
- - yeah!
is that a wasp nest?
- oh, my goodness!
- yeah.
enough hornets
sting any of us, I mean,
We could be
seriously affected by that.
Just one hornet sting
is enough, like,
imagine a whole nest.
it's risky,
but the hornets' nest
is pretty high up
And when it falls
it should land
Out in the middle
of the water.
If we have to take breaks
to get away from them,
that's what will happen.
- you're up.
- all right.
I'll give it a shot
with this thing...
- Okay.
- ...See what happens.
higher.
Use one hand, babe.
-Are you micromanaging me?
-I'm just helping.
I cut down trees.
I know. I do, too.
amber can be
pretty fricking challenging
And, um, I have a hard time
with faking.
Like, I'm not a good faker.
I'm not a good liar.
do this,
you're so strong, trish...
- I'm not doing it.
- ...With one hand.
I'm not doing it
with one hand.
I've cut down
a lot of trees in montana.
I'm not gonna let
anybody tell me
what to do.
I'll take your suggestion
And if I feel like
it's something I wanna do,
yeah, I'll do it.
But if I don't,
I'm not going to do it.
Period.
this is, like,
one of the greatest tools.
We have used this tool
for everything.
Do you hear that?
I heard
a slight crack,
which is good.
is that tree ready?
Is this tree coming down already?
yeah, we're doing it.
Dude, this thing's going down.
ooh, baby!
amber,
get out of there.
Oh, it's going! Whoo!
It's going! It's going!
in your face, amazon!
cut down a tree today!
cut down a tree today!
bam, bam, bam, bam!
oh! Is that
a hornets' nest?
- it's out of the water.
- no!
- oh, no!
- fudge!
one of us
is gonna have to get a stick
and hit it in.
- I'll do it.
- Are you gonna
knock it in?
- Yeah, I'll go knock it down real quick.
- - oh, my god.
I'm gonna get
as close as I can
to knock it over in the water.
All right, careful,
some of the hornets
are still flying out, so...
I see it.
if she gets
stuck in the mud
she's going to get lit up!
oh, god.
here comes
the hornets.
yeah,
they're coming out.
Amber, you better
get out of there!
Oh, my gosh.
ow! Ow!
Oh, they're getting me!
hurry up, amber, go!
Amber, go!
holy , amber,
You better get the
out of there!
I think
that's as bad as...
- ow! Ow!
- hurry up, amber!
- Go, amber, go!
- - oh, they're getting me!
They're coming after her
and they're gonna
come up here after us.
They're still coming after me.
oh, my god.
Are you okay?
Yeah, I've got, like,
a couple of stings.
They would not stop
following me.
I was in panic mode.
My girls are just
looking at me like I'm crazy
I'm screaming.
I'm hitting them off of me.
- You okay?
- Yeah. They bit me
on my ears. Damn!
Your ears?
I think I got bit
about ten times.
- How's it look?
- oh, it looks swollen.
Right here.
All the little red bites.
Bit me here. Um, right there.
Those are the bite marks.
Bit me on my back.
I am on fire all over my body.
It hurts really bad
right there.
Okay. Tree,
half a hornets' nest down.
- we killed it.
- We need to come back tomorrow...
- Yes.
- ...And then
we'll do it again.
- Yeah.
- I'm gonna go
to the water...
...And get
in the water
to cool these bites,
- 'cause my neck is on fire.
- yeah.
- cool.
- all right, guys.
Amber decided to
knock the hornets' nest
off of its post on the tree.
You could say
that she had it coming.
My ears are on fire.
My neck. Oh, god.
Oh, my god.
I am in so much pain
right now.
- they're still swarming.
-yeah.
They're all over the tree.
- We'll definitely have to
take a break from...
- Yeah.
...Trying to knock
the rest of that off.
Let's this fire going.
Hope it doesn't
burn my shelter down
while I'm gone.
Being out here alone
sucks, man.
It's not only
because of the fact
That you have to
do all the work alone,
but just for me, you know,
I'm an extrovert.
It's hard to see the joy
in all of it
when you're by yourself.
Today I am going to go out
and scout for some resources
This jungle's a whole networ
of different ecosystems,
With different resources
And hopefully some fruits
and things like that
And other things
that I can utilize out here
But really I'd be lying
if I said
I wasn't just looking
for any sign of life.
Any sign of life at all,
anywhere else in this jungle
someone to join me.
I have a terrible
sense of direction,
But one thing I can do
is keep the river
on my right,
So that's the one thing
that'll help me
from getting lost.
If I went straight back
into the jungle right now,
I would never
find my way back.
I'm gonna
head over there.
I'm just gonna
go look at the nest.
yeah,
I'm gonna go with you.
I would like
to check that out.
that hornets' nest
was a nightmare.
I woke up and I was like,
"nice!" I didn't scratch them
or itch them.
They're all over my body.
They look like penny tags
with little dots
in the middle.
So, we decided to go back
and finally get
the nest off the tree
So we can start building
our dock.
how's the hornet nest?
- it looks empty.
-it does look empty.
what?
I don't see
any hornets in there.
You would have known
if the hornets
were still there.
- They would have been out.
- Yeah.
There's nothing in there,
but there's five million ants.
They're all coming out.
I'd rather focus on
the hornets first.
Well, there's no hornets
in there.
Well, these are fire ants
and they bite and they burn.
So now we have to really
come up with a plan
to knock that off.
there's no hornets
in there.
- I just wanna make 100% sure.
- - they're not in there.
I guess you're right.
Let's start throwing stuff
at it.
damn!
dammit!
- sorry, guys.
- it's fine.
coming in
with reinforcements.
no,
that's my firewood!
- It's going down.
- No, that is
really good firewood.
-Nah, it's going down.
-No, it's really...
I swear to god!
We'll get more!
-We'll get more.
Come on, come on.
-No, but this is gonna be...
this is a burner
all night long.
- Oh, come on.
- I really like this.
Come on.
just do
a different one.
dammit.
What we could do
is get the bamboo
And hit it
and just keep hitting it.
I can hold the end,
jen, while you smash
the front.
I'll hold the end for balance.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- start stabbing the out of them.
- - Yeah.
Just watch they don't
get on the bamboo
And start coming up.
Careful.
there we go.
That's a good chunk.
Ooh, that sounds good.
- it looks better.
- yeah, it looks great.
It's all coming up.
- Ants for everybody.
- We have ants flying.
Great job. That looks good.
all right, I'm gonna
go cut down a tree now
So we can start
building our raft.
The plan is build a dock
And then take apart the doc
at the end and use it
as a raft.
It's a two-for-one
price type deal.
We get a raft
and also a dock set up.
I wanna be right there
in the middle with the raft
So we may have to create
other logs to attach
To the top of the tree
and strap them on
As we walk across it.
The girls haven't built a ra
on any of their challenges
before.
I have a ton of experience
with building rafts
So hopefully they'll listen
to my guidance.
Jen, do you wanna
come look at this tree
with me really quick?
- Sure.
- Trish, do you wanna
come look, too, babe?
I'm taking a break.
I think amber's very confident
in her skills and her
experience out here,
However I have knowledge
that amber does not.
I know that jen has knowledge
that I do not.
We're all in this together.
We're trying to get to
the same place.
We have the same goal,
so I wish her leadership
Was a little less...
I don't know. Bossy?
I'm out here,
I'm searching for food
And I came across
some water vine.
It holds a tremendous
amount of water, like,
Half a liter in almost, like
three or four feet,
So I gotta cut it at one end
cut it at the other again,
Then lay it down
and then I can lift it up
And a little bit of gravity
feeds water into me.
It's a little bitter.
It tastes earthy
But it's fresh.
Got about a cup and a half
of water straight from
mother earth.
It's just nice
how nature provides
when you need it most,
But gonna keep on trucking.
I'm out here on a mission
right now, so I'm gonna
do the best I can
To kind of put something
on the table.
I'm gonna tread round here
for probably
Another hour,
hour and a half or so
'cause I got
a long trek back to camp.
It looks like
there's an opening
over on the other side,
So I'm gonna kind of
hug this ridgeline,
Go all the way around
and see what's over there.
Getting dense.
I'm walking through
the jungle and I'm not
finding too many resources.
The elevation
is changing a lot.
This terrain
is rough and dense
But the higher elevation
is nice.
Whoa.
The ground is a little drier
Pockets where there's sun
is nice, too.
Not so dank and still
like it is around my shelter.
temperature drops
considerably out here at
night-time when it rains
So I just wanna
make sure I'm prepared.
If we get big storms
It might roll from
the afternoon into the night
Or if we get, uh...
Sorry, I've got a fire ant
on my nuts.
They're ruthless,
those little things.
Ow.
Is that humans?
oh, what is that?
Is that humans?
oh, what is that?
Oh!
I think we got some monkeys
or something going on
over here.
- Is that a shelter?
- Is that a person?
what?
People! How're you doing, man?
- Oh, yes.
- I'm dan.
It's nice to meet you, man.
- Nice to meet you.
- It's so good to see someone.
How you been going, man?
I've been going, man.
- Is it just you?
- it's just me.
It's been days
of just talking to myself.
me too.
How long have you
been by yourself for?
Um, like, six days.
Yeah, that's crazy.
For me the word that I've used
to describe it so far
is just brutal.
he seems
like a good guy.
Strong, determined
and positive.
I couldn't be more happy
at the moment.
I got a big pyramid
that was designed for three,
Bone dry inside
all day yesterday
when it was pouring.
Like, you could sleep
without getting a drip
on you.
that sounds amazing.
- Got a dock built out
into the water.
- Yeah, nice.
I've gotten a big bird
and a snake.
Caught a couple of fish
out of there,
But it sort of
dried up recently.
I've just been setting
passive lines
And every day I've been
getting, like, three fish.
- Like the wolffish?
- All wolffish, that's it.
Dan's been explaining his camp
and obviously it doesn't
take much
For it to be better
than what I had set up
- I even have a tomato garden.
- Where did you get a tomato?
I ate a bunch of seeds
before I started.
- They're growing.
- That's the best.
Yeah, if you wanna
come hang out
at my place.
You don't wanna move in here?
is that what
you're saying?
- Is that what you're saying?
- maybe not.
Shelter's really good.
He's already got a bed
ready there for me.
All right, so, you're happy
if I come stay with you
for a bit?
- Please, please.
- Yeah?
I could really use it.
having a partner
is definitely gonna
make life easier
For the both of us.
A lot of the time
when you're alone
You just get through
the essential chores.
Just that division of labor
makes life easier.
I have a whole collection
of tools now.
Yeah, me too,
they left everything.
So I've got... Rod left
his bow and arrows here,
Including a fishing one.
- Okay.
- He also left his machete.
- Gary left his pulaski
right there.
- Hell, yeah.
We've got fire starters,
machetes for days.
We have an absolute cache
of weapons right now.
All right, so, I gotta
grab some stuff from here.
Basically just taking
all of the man-made stuff.
I'll grab this quiver.
I feel like
conan the barbarian.
Do you have
anything like that?
- It's just to lift
the pot off the...
- yeah, let's keep it.
It's a nice rack.
That's inappropriate.
- I don't have to deal with this.
- Can we call this off?
all right,
let's move out.
I honestly feel like
I'm walking into a war.
Just walking into battle.
- No one would mess with us right now.
- - no.
this tree
looks really good.
Let me cut this one down,
But I want you to know
that this tree
Is going to fall that way
because look at the bow.
It is going a little bit
already, yeah.
so, the next step
for making the dock
We have to chop down a tree
That has enough buoyancy in
That will be the best
for our raft to float.
I've back my battle buddy,
jen, with me and she's been
a great helper.
Whoo-hoo.
I am making a net,
a scoop net
And we're gonna use this ne
for both the pond
and the river.
Hopefully it'll hold up
To the things that have teeth
in the river, but...
It'll be a multi-purpose net
To scoop up bait fish
and maybe even piranha.
We could definitely
get a piranha with this.
Just can't keep it
in the net too long
'cause I'm sure
it'll bite right through
This fishing line.
Go a little more.
do it.
Ah!
It's gone that way.
Watch out, move!
Timber!
Oh, no.
- Well...
- dammit, right?
Can we cut it down?
We just have to be careful
because the second
That goes down more,
This is coming
all the way down.
- Correct.
- So, we need,
like, an escape plan
From that little tree.
The only thing we're gonna get
is that way.
Amber and I are cutting down
the tree for our dock and raft
And we get it down
but it's stuck on the trunk
And it's also stuck
in the trees above.
go, amber.
yeah.
It may end up rolling
this way more, though,
-Because it's gonna...
-no, it is. That's good.
It's okay.
yeah. I think it's...
we just have to
move faster than
the damn tree.
yeah, so maybe
you go behind, to your left
- And it'll come down this way.
- whoa.
you're doing good.
- Is it move at all or no?
- No.
- It's not gonna work.
- It's so unpredictable.
we're expelling
all this energy
But it's worth it
because we know
We need this tree in the water
To help out with our dock.
We need enough strength
on the branches
to wedge it off.
That's all we can do.
Or I can keep cutting
at an angle so it slides.
Does that make sense?
I can cut up on the tree base
- So that it has...
- a little bit more...
The weight, yeah.
We'll talk to trish about
what we're doing
And see if she can fish
while we finish it?
What a bust.
- Hey, trish.
- Yeah?
we may need you
to fish.
We are having
a situation with the tree.
- Yeah.
- it's cut down
But it doesn't wanna
come off the base
And we worked on that
for a while
Where we're just
spent right now.
- Mmm-hmm.
- it's bad, trish,
Like, it's stuck
on its weight.
If you wouldn't mind
fishing while...
Oh.
Amber's giving orders,
delegating tasks
Without asking anybody
what they wanna do,
Just saying,
"hey, this needs to be done."
I am exhausted.
If I tell them,
"hey, I need you
to go fishing,"
It just becomes frustrating
that they're just like,
"nope, I'm gonna do this,"
And I can't have
the pressure on me every day,
Going out fishing
when I'm attempting
To build a raft.
well, welcome home.
I like
the sounds of that.
- This is even pretty.
- right?
you got
the nice background.
Like, it's sort of
framed in by the tree.
Got the little snail shell
accents.
Amazon deco.
As I arrive I'm looking arou
And it really is
a beautiful place.
The shelter is amazing.
He's done a really good job
building that up
But more than that,
the shelter is framed
By this backdrop of this
massive tree
And it's just impressive
in and of itself.
Good work doing all this, too.
I'm proud of you, man.
Thanks. It's been a lot.
I'm really impressed
by what dan's done so far.
It's way better in relation
Not just the things
that are built
But the environment as well
and the resources,
The food that's available.
I feel like I'm gonna
really be able to add
to that for him.
It's gonna allow me
to do some stuff that I'm...
That I do well naturally.
Fishing is one of
those things.
I'd like to try
and get something
With a little bit
more fat in it,
Whether it be a capybara
or something like that.
I'll show you the dock.
Can check the lines.
This part here
needs to be reinforced.
With much weight on it
it's gonna fall over.
you feel like
that's gonna go in
if I stand on it?
- probably.
- probably.
No offence.
no, none taken.
I know what I weigh.
but I just have
lines tied up to this.
yeah, we can
set a bunch of lines up.
yeah,
we can set a ton.
- out that way.
- Yeah.
Well, very nice. Good job.
I like it.
I'll show you
the garden.
They should produce fruit
in about 40 days from now.
- That direct sunlight
is what they need?
- Yep.
I love the fact
that dan's got
A little tomato garden
out here.
I'm not an expert
in tomato plants,
But if they can fruit in time
that's gonna be...
That's a little gift
right there.
Well, I am very impressed.
- Come take a load off.
- I think you've done great.
back home
after the scouting mission
Which turned out to be
an overwhelming success.
I couldn't be happier
about the partner
I did find.
Waz is a great guy.
He's solid and determined
and he's completely
unwavering
From the goal
of finishing this challenge
Which is exactly
the type of person
That I wanna be
surrounded with right now.
Kind of feel like
a weight has been
lifted off my shoulders
After being out here alone.
Well, thank you
for inviting me to your home.
thank you for coming.
So glad to have company.
It smells like the jungle.
I've probably explored
almost ten miles
North and south, east and we
on my side of the river
Looking for resources and..
I'm kind of
at my jungle weight right no
I've lost
a lot of my water weight.
Still got some fat on me,
so...
Not a lot but enough.
Survival is something
you gotta take
One day at a time
and I'm not gonna stop.
I never stop.
That's why I'm...
I'm a legend for a reason.
Got some still water.
Less bog, more kind of
shallow lake zone.
This is prime spot for caiman
and caiman nesting.
I'm liking the environment
that I'm in right now.
It screams
carnivore-dinosaur,
So, you know, fingers crossed
we come across something.
Oh, wow.
so, I found
a mound of debris
Right by the water's edge.
It looks like a caiman nest.
It's super dangerous
to approach any
crocodilia nest,
Whether it's caiman,
alligator or crocodile.
They're extremely protectiv
and they will defend
their nest
Against anybody and anything
I gotta
keep my head on a swivel.
They will erupt
out of the water,
Mouth open, hissing, snarling
And they'll protect it
with their lives.
check it out.
That's a caiman egg
right there.
How amazing is that?
I can't tell
if it's fertilized or not.
Caiman out here
get to about six-eight feet.
All crocodilian species
are very aggressive
and protective
When it comes to their nests.
They'll build this debris hu
basically around their eggs
And it regulates
the temperature of the eggs
So they don't have to be the
And depending on
the temperature of the nest
Determines the sex
of the caiman,
So if mama's around,
which I'm sure she is
'cause they always are.
I'm a little concerned
Mama would come
rushing out of that water,
Like, jurassic park styl
so,
I found a caiman nest.
If mama's around,
I'm surprised
She hasn't made her presence
known yet.
Back home if you get within
three feet of a nest
Within a minute mama dukes
is right there, up on you.
I don't know a whole lot
about caimans
But I grew up with alligator
and worked with them
for years.
This is the first time
I've ever approached
a crocodilian nest in my life
And not had the mom
try and bite my face off.
Even in the swamps,
when we're cruising
on our airboats,
If we get too close to one
the mom will attack
the airboat.
That's how protective they are
of their nest.
Now, looking at these...
They don't look fertilized.
There's almost
two yoke membranes
on each end of the egg
And usually,
when they're fertilized,
They start getting softer,
the shell itself
And you'd be able to see,
like, an embryo in there.
The good news is
I'm gonna take these
back to camp with me
And have a little
hard-boiled egg party.
I got about a dozen and a ha
caiman eggs
And there's probably
about another 18 eggs
Left in the nest.
Yeah, good day.
So, spirits are high.
I wanna fish,
but I think today's
project for me
Is gonna be
putting that bed in
And I'm gonna get
a big surfboard like yours
From over there
that we saw on the way in
And put it over here.
Just I think that I'll be
a bit more comfy on that
Than these slats and also...
- yeah.
- - I need a bit more width, you know?
Then we'll have
a bed over there
And a place to put
all of your stuff back there.
Yeah.
This can be the weapons rack.
I think we're gonna
get started by trying
to get waz a new bed.
He's been sleeping
on these slats last night
Which are about
as comfortable as they look.
Yeah, I can see how this...
I feel like
it used to be lighter.
drop it.
This is a buttress root
from a tree
That I'm gonna use as a bed
The bed that's in there,
it's not really wide enough.
I've got
pretty broad shoulders
So I'm gonna build another b
That's just a little bit
more comfy
And it's gonna
fit me a little bit better.
All right, time to go to work.
time to go to work.
Even though I took
some weight of this thing
- It's still...
- yeah.
It's still wet.
It'll be heavy.
One, two, three.
on all of my challenge
so far
I've really carried
all of the weight
on my own shoulders
For the most part
And to have a partner
that's, like, capable
And hard-working
and motivated,
It's amazing to have
someone like that around
To help share the load.
yes. Got my surfboard.
I can't sleep on it yet,
Gotta work out a few things
Take off some of the bumps
And smooth out
some of the grooves,
and all that sort of stuff.
First of all,
what I'm doing here
Is just mixing
a bunch of clay
with some water
So I've got a thick soup,
And this is gonna get
poured over the gaps
And, sort of, leak in
and join everything together.
I don't want it
to be too watery,
'cause then it will never dry.
I really need
that perfect consistency,
Where it's still able
to drip through,
But it's gonna set eventually.
Feel like patrick swayze.
It's looking pretty good.
Got there,
that's done and done.
That's my bed.
Job... Done.
I'm gonna do some fishing,
So I'm gonna get set up
some passive lines.
I'll take a couple of hooks
and see if I can retie 'em.
to set
these passive lines,
It takes zero energy,
Which is pretty significant,
Especially when we've been
out here not eating
a whole heck of a lot.
Yeah, I got four hooks ready.
But we're trying
to trap and hunt things
within pretty close range.
whatever fish we get
out there
Are gonna be definitely
another good sign
And a bump
in the right direction.
need to get this fire going
get a nice bed of coals.
I got about a dozen and a ha
caiman eggs,
And there's probably
about another 18 eggs left
In the nest.
That, right there,
That's four days' worth
of food,
So I'm gonna boil these up,
see how that is,
I've never had
boiled caiman eggs before,
And, hopefully, they're
just like hard-boiled eggs
at home.
It's probably between
20 and 36 grams of protein,
right there,
Which is the equivalent to
about a small chicken breast
So that's substantial.
All right.
First taste of caiman egg.
It's the egg white,
Just like in a chicken egg.
Mmm.
And it tastes
just like an egg white
in a chicken egg.
Oh, my god, that's amazing.
And then this is the yolk.
Oh!
Out of all the things
I expected to eat out here,
I didn't expect
to eat caiman eggs.
So this is new.
That was a meal, right there.
Thank you, mrs. Caiman.
- Wanna take it for a test ride?
- - yeah.
All right, here we go,
We're gonna test it out,
See if there's anything
we can get in our net.
It looks awesome.
jen and I finished
tying up the net,
And I think it's gonna be
a good little addition
To our tools that we have
out here.
We're gonna use this net
for both the pond
and the river,
See how she works.
We just gotta be careful
we don't scoop it
on the sticks, you know?
Should we get in,
or do it from the top?
well, it goes
through the water okay.
Amber might need
the net already.
- See, there are plenty...
- Mmm.
...Right in there.
it might be
a little too small
for this net,
Ones that are walking
away from me.
Got you!
I think the holes might
just be a little too big
For this group of fish,
- You know, these little ones?
- Mmm-hmm.
I see one little hole,
One little, like,
bigger hole, right here.
One fish.
- It's all I got.
- what, did you get one?
Yeah, I got a fish.
He's pretty awesome.
bye, it was great.
that gill net is not working.
They had to work on it,
They didn't wanna fish,
They had to build
this gill net.
Well, weaving
ain't feeding us.
This is good firewood.
it's gotta be
almost 6:00 in the morning,
And I'm coming for a fish.
Oh, lots of movement
down here this morning.
Back at the fishing hole.
We got
lots of static lines set,
So I'm gonna check them,
first off.
There's a lot of challenges
involved in fishing out here
Everywhere's different,
And they've all got
their own nuances,
And it's just a case
of learning the water system
Learning the fish.
No.
Yeah, lots of nibbles,
no bites,
So I think it's
just the smaller fish
out there.
Yeah, I'm not sure.
I'm considering maybe
trying to fish
That little patch up that way,
See if we get any more luck
up there.
I might just clear the reeds
out of the way,
Like I did at my other place.
Um, and seeing
if that makes a difference.
Give this a break
for a little bit,
And go fish that little bit.
Nothing on the fishing
this morning.
no?
- You see that, waz?
- What?
Little... It's on
the opposite shore a bit.
Go on.
What is it?
A vulture hanging out
in that tree, up to the left.
I was thinking of making
a bird trap.
- nice one.
- - it's that area with the bait
That the vultures frequent.
I'm not a hunter,
So I try to rely
on my biological experience,
Get to know all the pattern
of the animals in the area,
And what attracts them,
that kind of thing,
And the one animal
that I know is reliably coming
to a certain spot
Is the vulture.
It's coming to my bait spot
It's learned
that I've been leaving
food out for it,
So it keeps coming back
to that same spot,
So I think I'm gonna try
to build an ojibwa bird trap
Excited to try this out.
It's a native american desig
And, basically, it's just,
like, a big post
with a hole in it,
With a peg that fits
perfectly in there.
I'll have the snare wire
laying on that piece of woo
And onto a weight
that's suspended
off the ground.
Theory is,
A big bird will come down
and land on the perch,
Ideally for some bait,
And when it lands,
It'll knock this down.
The bird's instinct
is to keep grabbing
onto the stick
For a minute,
while it's trying to fly away.
When this falls down,
The weight'll drop,
And the snare wire that's
on the stick will tighten
right around its legs.
Come on, whittled enough.
There we go, did it.
Just needs a weight.
that one you're
about to stand on,
That's the one I suggest
using the weight.
I'm really impressed
by what dan's done so far,
And obviously, in survival,
Failing to plan is
planning to fail.
Dan says there's a chance
we can snag a vulture,
Down by our fishing hole,
So executing that plan is
the best chance of survival
put it right here.
- Easier than I thought it would.
- - mmm.
they've been coming
all the way in and then eating
- The food off the thing,
right?
- Yeah.
this has been
our bait station, here.
We've been gutting the fish
And leaving our bait here
And chopping bits out of it.
Almost accidentally,
I've sort of been training
Vultures and hawks
and other things
to come to this area
And pick up the scraps,
So I'm trying to take
advantage of that pattern
a little bit.
Hopefully, it won't fall out
And ruin my plan.
That's fine.
I'll make a better design.
Okay.
Well, I think
you've done good, buddy.
- Thanks for your help, man.
- Of course.
and what are you gonna
bait it with, uh?
- red is a good color.
- Yeah.
all right.
Baited and ready.
I'm excited
about this trap.
Well, the fire's rolling.
- how's it coming?
- It's coming.
I gotta boil
some water, babe, behind you.
The fish that are
in the pond right now,
As far as bait fish,
they're a little too small
for these holes,
So, hopefully,
closing some of the holes
on this net
Will give us the opportunit
to try it again tomorrow
And actually keep the fish
in the net this time,
So we're gonna make this wor
- Are you doing anything, jen?
- No, I can help with the net
and watch the boil.
- All right, you wanna do that
with me?
- Yeah.
- Tie these up?
- - yeah, wherever you see a spot.
my energy is low,
But I believe in this raft.
We need it.
The only thing we need
is firewood, if you guys can
get a chance to venture out.
I'm gonna try
to bring some back too.
When you see firewood
while you're working on
the net?
- no, when I go out.
- totally teasing.
Any time you're around,
And you see we're low
on small sticks again, yeah,
- So any type of anything, I would haul it.
- - I was just saying,
- If you're venturing out and you see some little things.
- - of course.
I try to build a pile
- Throughout the day.
- - I never come back empty-handed, so...
I really wanna get
to the same place
with my team, I mean,
They're my team.
That's who I started with,
And that's who
I wanna finish with.
Don't tell me,
"go get firewood"
when I'm done,
- Like, no, I'm gonna do
the net, and...
- Right.
- ...When I see firewood,
I pick it up, like always.
- Right.
But I think some things
might be coming up.
I'm trying to keep
that jersey girl locked down
But I feel her, man,
she's coming.
she's on her way.
I'm gonna go
cut down that tree,
And I'm gonna get
the other tree down.
I'm willing it to happen.
So, I'm looking at these.
It looks like it's stuck
right here, on this tree,
And the pressure,
Way that tree is putting
pressure on it,
It's gonna go this way,
So I need to come
on this side and cut it down.
Oh, god, this is gonna be
horrible when it falls.
Okay.
Little sketchy, huh?
I've been cutting down
this tree,
And I'm hoping it will fall
on top of the other one,
Knocking it down
so we can use it.
I hear it cracking,
just a little bit.
Oh!
Okay, okay, okay.
Timber!
Yeah!
Well, kinda.
This one didn't go
all the way down.
fudge!
She's structured
and likes a plan,
And unless she sees...
- Okay, she wants a plan,
but if it's her plan.
- Yeah.
Like, it will slide down
if I keep doing this.
Yeah, it's moving.
yeah, I don't like
the delegation,
I don't like...
- I'm not a subordinate.
- mmm.
I'm not in the military
with you.
- Yeah.
- A good leader will ask,
- Or a good teammate...
- Yeah.
- A good teammate will ask...
- Right.
...Not delegate.
been trying to move it.
I don't know
if I'm that strong.
But let me see
if I can do it.
Ta-da!
I did not think
I was that strong.
Yeah!
Cutting down trees
in the amazon, ladies!
It's not the amber show,
it's not the amber team,
- It's our team, right?
- Mmm.
I just... I'm getting
a little bit of resentment.
You wanna come see?
Are you guys coming?
This is a joyous moment.
Right up there on your left
is some more of that fruit.
Oh, yeah, look at this.
Let's try cutting
into a couple.
yeah, let's see
what it's like.
too hard.
that was just
a liquid inside.
- the liquid's really good.
- It is?
but it's damned
near impossible to, like,
Get it open without spilling
it everywhere.
Kinda like coconut water.
grab that.
Back in the forest,
where we've been collecting
palms for a shelter,
I've seen the palm trees
that grow the tagua fruit.
We are hurting
for the nutrients right now
And, sure enough, there's
a lot of them on the ground.
- Nice little hit, isn't it?
- Ooh, that is nice.
That's like drinking
a gatorade.
You can feel the nutrients
of these, like,
Fruit just coursing
through our veins,
And, um, it's kinda like
an energy drink.
It's amazing.
- That is good.
- Mmm.
- ooh, ooh, ooh,
ooh, ooh, ooh. Dan.
- Yeah.
Vulture coming in to land
by the fish trap.
gonna eat some vulture?
vulture stew.
Let's see if I can creep up
on one of 'em.
Whoa!
Oh, my god!
the xls,
or xl success metric,
Weighs each group's
collective skills
and survival status
To determine
a likely percentage
Of reaching their 40
and 60-day goals.
Desperate for protein...
I've lost
a lot of my water weight.
Still got some fat on me,
But not a lot.
...Steven pushed
deep into caiman territory..
it's super-dangerou
to approach any caiman out,
They're extremely protective
leading
to an unexpected find.
that's
a caiman egg, right there.
...And a much-needed
protein score.
Ah, thank you, mrs. Caiman.
as a result,
His individual xls success
rating rises from 56 to 64%
After a week alone
in the amazon...
Is that a shelter?
Is that a person?
dan discovered
waz's camp.
Do you wanna come
hang out at my place, like?
Don't wanna move in here?
...Forming
a new partnership.
I couldn't be more happy
at the moment.
...And new opportunities
for protein.
all right.
Baited and ready.
and their first team effort
may be about to pay off.
their xls rating
is recalculated
for a two-man team
And set at 54%.
With a new mission to find
bigger protein sources...
the stock is unnecessary,
Because it's
what will provide.
...Tensions
on the all-female team
are rising.
use one-handed.
are you micromanaging me?
I'm taking a break.
Trying to keep
that jersey girl locked down
I feel her, man, she's coming.
leading
to conflicting strategies.
I don't think
that gill net is gonna do
with piranha.
as a result,
Their team xls drops
from 60% to 41%.
timber!
Yeah!
It's not the amber show,
It's not the amber team,
it's our team.
you wanna come see?
I'm getting a little bit
of resentment.
this is a joyous moment!
I hear that there's
something down there,
I bring my bow out,
but I don't get there
in time.
Looks like a vulture has
just taken the fish guts away.
Missed it by a hair.
You have those vultures
well-trained, though,
I'll tell you that.
Now we've just got
to get it to land on the trap.
What do you want me to do?
Um, you mind
just holding the weight?
All of the protein I've
sourced in past challenges
Has been opportunistic,
And I've had luck doing that,
But this is
a little bit more calculated
You can't starve 40 days,
And you're hungry,
So I'm gonna keep trying
to, uh,
Tweak it a little bit
And make sure that snare wraps
around the feet of whatever
lands on that trap.
That's perfect.
I was relying more
on jamming the peg in there
Rather than letting
the knot do the work.
right,
let's see what else
do we need here.
Okay, I just wanna
finish this, you know?
- Yeah, me too.
- Move on with this.
I just need to tie this.
Oh, that could be
really good firewood,
Look at that.
That looks legit.
I could feel trish's tensio
in the shelter.
Seem like they're just getti
frustrated with me,
And all I'm doing is working
This is our moment
to, like, really push us,
And it seems like they just
wanna sit down and work
on a net.
I just feel like we're gonna
get worse,
And I don't know
what to do about it,
And I can't help them
work on a net all day.
How's it coming?
It's coming.
That is getting close
to being done.
okay, I'm gonna head
back over there
and start cutting,
If you guys wanna come
join me at any time...
To start breaking down
the logs.
Yeah, we're just finishing up
with this.
Um, you guys could consider
getting the thick cordage
for me,
So that I can start tying
'em down,
It would really help me,
- Tying it all together.
- Think if everybody
sees cordage, grab cordage.
- Yeah.
- You see firewood,
grab firewood.
you know,
I really need cordage
like tomorrow, though.
Don't give me tasks
and expect me
to follow your orders,
'cause it's not gonna happen.
I'm finishing the net,
'cause that's
what I've started,
And I wanna finish that.
- Okay.
- And when I'm done, I'll...
- So you don't have to tell me.
- Yeah, this wasn't me
Telling you guys,
it was just, like,
"hey, if you guys can..."
- Well, it kinda feels
like that, a little bit.
- I know, but...
That's why I'm a little edgy,
'cause I wanna just do
my own pace
And do my own thing.
We have a structure.
Food, water, fire, shelter.
We have to do it.
I just wanna do things
at my own pace,
When I wanna do that.
- That's okay, I understand.
- I know what needs
to be done,
I know we need to eat,
I know we need water,
I get that. I'm not out
off, just like,
You know, hanging around
and doing nothing, like,
I'm tying a net
so that I can get bait
So we can go fishing.
- yeah...
- I'm tying a net so we can scoop piranha
Out of the water.
I've had a lot more challenges
than you.
- Yes, but you're not
the only one with experience...
- I have done this way longer.
- okay.
- - I can outdo you guys, I'm telling you.
- You guys have had a 21-day challenge.
- - right.
I have done probably 76 days,
total,
Not including this.
I'm telling you because
I love you guys
And I know you guys
are badasses,
And I just want us
to be a team.
It is a team, but I'm saying,
like,
Instead of delegating, like,
"you do this
and you do that..."
But nobody's saying that.
I just offered... Hey...
You don't have to look at me
like that and give me, like,
"whatever."
This...
I'm being serious, dude.
really don't wanna
argue with you, guys.
Whatever. I'm done, I'm done.
What is going on here?
Don't tell me,
"go get firewood."
I'm just not sure how...
What the happened
in that conversation?
Why don't you ask me?
Don't tell me.
We could be so frickin' epic,
here,
If we just worked together
as a team.
I just don't know how much
I can keep pushing myself.
