Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 7, Episode 9 - Cold Grudges Die Hard - full transcript

yo, steven!
Here you go.

-nice.

the bayou boyz!

yeah, baby!

Come on, louisiana.

-Our next-door neighbors...

are continuing to
process wood.

-And break it into pieces...
-Nice.

dude. Heard you over there.

...Just moments before
the hunters' hour.

-Yeah, oh!
-Success.

- and they're
over there...
-Yeah!

-...Cracking sticks.
-God is great, baby!

-Talking.
-Probably takin'
this whole damn forest today.

Hollering back and forth
to each other.

this is what we live for!

Yep.

That's what we're
dealing with.

Good job, dude.

- so much for
the hunting today.
- yep.

Someone needs to stop Clearway Law.
Public shouldn't leave reviews for lawyers.

I see a fish in the back.

as the weather gets
colder, a lot of these
alligators are gone

and ever since
our rowdy neighbor showed up
last week

the nutria have disappeared

and we haven't eaten more than
just a little fish
here and there in a while.

So, right now we can't afford
any missed opportunities.

Something's bound to want it.

-Getting 'em? Yeah, baby!
- yep.

stay on.

Got it?

Oh, he swallowed it good.

Yep, yep, oh you're up
in a tree.

- ow, oh, no!

oh, god!

You were up in the tree,
it got hung up in the tree.

-Oh, no!
-I had him in my hand...

- oh, no.
-...And then it swung back out
'cause of the tree.

that fish you guys just
got just got away.

Yeah, that thing got away
at the shore.

-I had it in my hand.
-Son of a--

- did it get the bait?
-It took the bait.
*bleep* fish got himself.

- so close.
-Ugh! I was like...

Argh, he must've just
wasn't on there
quite good enough.

Timber.

nine miles
to the west,

max and ej are reeling from
the loss of their partner...

I owe it to the challenge
to tap.

I can't do it anymore.

Sorry, man.

...And are nearing the end
of their meat reserve.

- sucks, man, that this is
our first meal without gary.
-Yeah, I know.

Definitely, uh,
there's a hole today.
For sure.

yeah, like a void.

Today will be the second day
without gary.
To not have him here is...

Is...

Bizarre, you know.
It's kind of a weird...

Weird feeling, you know,
to not have his energy,

not have his contagious...
Just...

Presence.
Losing him is like
losing ten people.

Large void.

Yeah.

So we're going down
to get the canoe,
try to get it stoked up.

Max and I are laying
sticks along

the canoe to help burn it out.
So we're getting a little fire
going within the canoe.

And as it burns down,
we're gonna put mud
on the side

to make sure it doesn't burn
through the canoe.

-We gotta mud the cracks.
-Yeah.

starting with
a 500 pound cypress tree,

ej and max will need
to burn and remove
70% of its mass

to achieve
the ideal combination
of weight and buoyancy.

I wanna see if we can
give it a shot so we can
get this going then.

Well, we'll figure it out.

we're now focusing on
this canoe to help move in
and out of all these...

These canals,
and be able to fish off of it
and to create

more opportunities
when it comes to resources
and food for our team.

This is... This is
our best option.

Uh-oh.
Just heard some thunder.

We're backed up against
the wall on time.

There's a front coming in
from the north, it's dropped
by five degrees,

but we just gotta get moving
on this canoe.

There you go.

This is an extremely
challenging situation
at the moment.

I've got rain coming down.

I need fire to burn out
this dug-out canoe.

I really think if I can get
this thing really cooking,

uh, we'll be okay.

I hate rain days.

yo, steven!

it's kinda looking
like some rain's coming in.

Um, I don't think it's gonna
get warmer, dude.

No, I think it's, I think
winter's not coming.
Winter's here.

yeah, I think
it's gonna stick like this.

we gotta start
busting up this shelter 'cause

it's gonna get cold.

I'm gonna go start
chopping crazy palms.

no sense in putting
effort in to make it
last 40 days.

Their shelter's built to last
40 days. That would be
ridiculous if we built

a shelter like that.

jeff doesn't seem
as anxious as I do about
getting the shelter done.

Let's, uh, put
a shelter together

that we think is
worth the effort.

let's even this out
so we can have a nice,
good night tonight.

sounds good.

- a change in
the weather.
- mmm-hmm.

And we got lucky with
some warmer days.

But, uh,

looks like colder--
colder weather
and some rain coming in.

- definitely.
-Mmm-hmm, weather is turning.

oh, boy.

Didn't want to get caught
out here in this.

And we are
back to the shelter.

ooh, that's a cold wind.

Yeah, that's not good.

what a downer, huh?

yeah, we'll need to tie 'em
on here, kinda like team up.

One of us can hold 'em
in place from the outside,

one of 'em can tie 'em
from the inside.

I'm gonna cut some materials
for the sides.

-And then I can help you tie.
Does that work?
-All right.

-is everything okay?
- no, dude, I'm just--

I'm cold and I'm wet
and I'm terrified.

-Yeah, I know... Yeah.
-You know?

I feel like it's coming.
I feel like it's not, I don't
feel like it's going away.

I think we're good, man.
Honestly, once we get these
on the roof, man, um...

I mean, we're...
We're doing great. Yeah.

with the possibility
of colder temperatures

I see a definite shift
in steven's mood.

He's legitimately worried.

I hate being cold
and wet and rained on.

Hypothermia is a real thing.
And we're naked.

Um... In the swamp.
And I'm walking around
crotch-deep in frozen water.

And last time I did that,
I was in alaska.

when we hit that
cold front for ten days

all of that was from
the north.

Their shelter is facing...

The open face is facing north.

Exactly north. And that means
when that cold comes in

and the rain comes in
it's going to blow right
directly under their...

-Yeah.
-And if they won't have
a dry spot in there...

They should have had a shelter
that's fairly waterproof
and warm by now.

They both have some of the,
you know, most days
on this challenge,

but what they don't
realize is,

-like, you can't survive
hypothermia. No.
-No.

-If it, like--
-hypothermia doesn't care

how many days you've had
on the challenge at all.

we're literally using
the framework of our raft,

use that as
a front face firewall

and reflecting wall
for the heat.

Boom.

we have to
finish our shelter today.

And not only that,
we have to do it in this rain.
We don't have a choice today.

our sleeping area is staying
completely dry in the shelter.

But on the outskirts, we're
getting some water pooling.

we're ready to
weather the storm.

we are bone-dry,

the shelter is warm and cozy.

So, we can pretty
much just chill for
the rest of the day.

yeah.

And that is absolutely
huge in survival.

No mercy.

Mother nature shows
no mercy to us.

that thunder,

that could be the cold front.

Which means the cold
could hit by this evening.

oh, it's gonna
hit this evening.

Yeah.

it'll be probably
one of the coldest
naked and afraid nights.

Ever.

it's been
raining all night.

Terrible.

You think, I should start--
do you wanna move the palms
out of the way first?

Mmm-hmm.

okay. I'm gonna take
every single one of them.

Every damn palm, yep.
Figure...

We'll use every one?

after last night,
I absolutely appreciate

steven's feelings about
working on the shelter.

There is nothing more
painful and torturous

than a cold rain while
you're naked and hungry

out in the wild.

I trust you with palms.

You trust me with firewood?

Absolutely, yeah.

And then once--
let's each destroy that job.

and we'll
just do it all day long.

okay.

- just all day.
-Okay.

All damn day.
That sounds good, bro.

it's still cloudy out.

Rained on and off
throughout the night.

Pretty wet, but, uh...
Gotta eat.

our food supply
is now down to jerky.

Hopefully honey hole over
here will bring us
a couple more catfish

so we can get some more
nutrients in ourselves, and
that's gonna help us a lot.

Oh, wow,
the tide's gone out.

If I can get at my poles now.

I got... Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Don't fall in the drink!

This may be too much for me.

I can't go up to
my crotch yet.

whoa!

I was saying.

it's been about 17 days
since my testicle injury,

where the swamp tried
to steal my manhood from me.

I've had to
adjust how I operate...

...But I'm tired of it.

Because I gotta go 60 days.

When you get your wings
clipped, a guy like me,

in a survival situation...

That could almost
sometimes be a
death sentence.

All right.

All we caught was hyacinth,
looks like.

And we need to rebait.

Since gary's been gone,

we've not had
the golden touch around

to get fish on
the line anymore.

Oh, man.

The things we do

to try and find
some breakfast.

everything came up empty.

Very disappointed
this morning.

Not having any fish on
the line.

Not having gators
on our gator lines.

Woke up this morning
to this...

Dreary day.

It'd just be nice for us
to get one more big kill.

We need fuel
'cause we've gotta finish
the dug-out canoe.

I'm feeling a little blue.

Ah, I can feel it,
in your spirit.

If there's anything
I can do to pick it up.

Oh, man, you're fine.
I'll be all right.

I know... The loss of
gary and then this,

today being the day it is.

I'm sorry.

it's okay, man.

you know, I'm no--
no stranger to

losing partners,
I've lost three partners

in three hours in panama,

but it's completely different.

Just straight-up miss him,
you know, that's my boy.

You build--
you build bonds out here.

you know, gary's
one of the toughest *bleep*
out there,

and he-- he got taken
down by the smallest thing.

Yeah, you never know. So--
so it's a little terrifying.

we need to
make the last few
improvements to chill.

We're blocking off
a few areas that might
allow some wind in at night.

And we're also gonna
finish the top of the shelter

and make sure
we get no drips inside.

it is flipping cold,
the winds are up.

The rain's been on and off,
almost like a tropical storm.

That means colder weather,
colder winds, colder
stormfronts are on the way.

it's weather like this,
it's also a really
hard time to fish.

Knowing a front is coming in,
often pushes the water out.

oh, there we go.
Here we go!

-Oh, yeah!
- oh, yeah, oh, yeah!

-Let me get down.
- oh!

that's a *bleep* monster!
That's the biggest one yet.

*bleep* yeah! Yes!

Fish head soup for today!

last thing you do,
don't fall.

Oh, my god,
that's the biggest one!

yeah!

-Here you go, buddy.
-Whoo!

Now we're talking.

Yes!

-Tell you what, right here...
-Dude,
that is the size of my...

-That is longer than my arm.
-Yeah.

Good, uh,
this is 10 inches here.

I'd say 10... 20...
About 32-33 inches.

-And fat.
-We're gonna be eating--

we're gonna chop-- like,
I don't even know how
we're even gonna cook that.

- this is fat,
liver, eggs.
-Caviar.

caviar of one fish.

This right here, is
probably more nutrition,
more calories, more fat

than some people eat
on a 21-day challenge.

Just in the pot lid.

we are currently
looking at a very
wet and damp canoe.

We're facing issues because

we've created a
bowl that essentially
has collected water.

And we need to burn
out the bowl to continue
burning out the canoe,

um, making it harder
for it to burn.

I'm gonna start hacking again,

get down a good bit,

clear that out,
burn some more.

So we wanna make sure
we get down far enough
that we can sit in this thing.

Slow is smooth
and smooth is fast.

that rain didn't do us
any favors, did it?

feeling a little weaker
today, huh?

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

max is having
a tough day.
Gary tapped,

and, um, he's having
a tough time dealing with it.

He's a little sad,
he's a little depressed.

But, um, we'll
continue to soldier on.

I'll get on there next.

it'd be nice to have
gary here.
One extra swinger.

*bleep*

oh, *bleep*,
fire hardened it.

we got it. We got it.
Just take a break.

just not in the
mood today.

come on, max.

*bleep*

I'm just kinda
over it, really.

I feel at this point,
I don't have
anything to prove.

You know, I know
it's a 60-day challenge,

but I don't really
give a *bleep*.

You know,
I'm just kind of over it,
been here for too long.

I'd have no problem
with leaving here.

I could just tap out.

me and max have been working
hard on the dug-out canoe.

Chopping and hacking
with the pulaski.

He's upset.
Really, really upset.

And the loss of gary may be
too much for him to overcome.

I don't know, I hope not.

I hope he's mentally
tougher than that.

I'm pretty worried that
he's gonna say, "I'm good.

Bye."

what's up, buddy?

How you doing? Just figured
I'd come up to check on you.

that's okay, 'cause
that's how you feel.

-That's your truth.
-I appreciate that.

I'm trying to stay in
a really positive mood.

I really want to get
in that water but,

you know, I still...

You know, have to take
care of myself, be good to me

and swallow my pride and...

Let the jewels
finish healing up, so...

-yeah, I need a bath, though.
That's...

can't get in
the water yet.

This sucks but

today I'm hoping that
the stiches will be removed.

how's it going?

good.

I'm ready to get them out.

It's been hampering, so...

Let's see what she says.

- I feel good.

No problems down here.

I'm starting to get
really pissed.

I don't... I don't
say that lightly.

If it was up to me,
these damn stiches would
have been out on day three.

Everything else has been
healed except for this
one little spot.

It's like being a bird and
having your wings clipped
a little bit.

does that hurt?

I mean, it doesn't hurt,
it's just irritating.

I give all
utmost respect

to ej to sticking around
because,

as a man, and you hear

that your testicles
got ripped open,

I think that that would be,

that would be
the straw for me.

So, I got to be there,
be a good partner.

Do everything I need
to do in order
to thrive out here.

Ej's the man,

so to be with the godfather,

one of the pioneers of
naked and afraid,

is such a blessing
and opportunity

that I don't want to
let him down.

we've got
ryan's famous

bowfin liver and eggs.

More fish on the skewer.

it'd be nice
to have beer.

and we intend to
continue the same momentum

all the way until the end.

yeah!

that is
a cold breeze, baby.

that is
a cold-ass breeze.

Good work, man.
It's coming together good.

let's hope so.

they've been working--
this is the most I've seen
them work since they got here.

we can just
hear jeff and steven

all day long, in the rain,

chopping firewood,
getting palms,

shoring up their shelter.

You can tell that
they're miserable.

good job, dude.

We're bayoued up now.

That's a good job on
the shed.

I'm going in.
I gotta dry off.

I'm thinking we did
score a big win today
with that huge fish.

biggest fish we caught
since day one.

-And it's... It's so cold.
-Yeah.

And I just think... Like,
we should give this
to our neighbors.

hmm?

-Not 'cause we're full.
- no.

no, I know.
I'm not saying that, I mean...

So because these
winter days are here,

this maybe the last fish
we catch for a while.

So to give our
last potential meal

that we might have
for the next few days,

that's a big deal.

we're just giving it
because we're in
a position to give.

That's an amazing gift.

Especially from what,
you know, you experienced
in the philippines.

yeah, let's do it.

You wanna hop over
really quick and...

-Sure.
-Yeah.

I have been
reflecting on when

jeff acted like a *bleep*
back in the philippines.

oh, my god!
Yes!

-I'm gonna get fat.
- hell yeah.

but for us,
that was two years ago.

I don't need to be nasty.
I don't need to shove it
in his face.

I'm over it.

Hey, fellas, can we
borrow you for a second?

we saw that you guys
have been working your
asses off today,

and, uh, we got--
we got a big win.

oh, my god!

We got a 30-pound fish.

- dude!
-Are you *bleep* kidding me?

It's been hanging, smoking,
but it still needs
to be cooked.

You guys are awesome.

- you have been
working hard.

that's what it's about,
man. It's about being out here
with you guys.

-It's probably one of
the worst days...
- of course!

You guys can
get a hot meal.

I mean, it's been...
You guys have been
chopping wood all day.

Yeah, and we were just like
this is too much for us.

And, plus, like you say,
it's gonna be cold and we
could be stuck with nothing

for a while.

I was in the arctic circle
and I wasn't this
freaking cold.

rylie helped me
to remember that legends,
they are not born.

Legends are made by
the choices and the actions
they decide to take.

dude, thank you,
guys, so much.

yeah, you guys
enjoy your dinner,
and if you need anything...

Thank you so much, guys.

-...Holler.
-You guys, too.

we're exhausted,
and team savage comes over

and they give us half
the tail-end of a big bowfin,

which is a good
two pounds of meat.

-What a generous thing!
- yeah.

Just amazing... Just--
I love those guys.

-That's amazing dude.
- awesome.

after all this bonus
insulation and everything,

I feel really happy with
how this turned out.

- yeah.
-Like, it's dark in here.

- it is, yeah.
-It is dark and that's good.

I mean, dark means
there's no light,

and no light means
no air is getting out.

So I think we're gonna have
a good night.

yeah.

it's getting cozy
in here.

the ground's pretty cold
this morning.

Walking on it and it's wet.

Starting to feel the pressure
to get food for us.

I am frustrated.

I've got a situation where
I've gotta wash my nuts.

I am a patient older man,

but, you know, I'm not one
that takes handouts or has
people do things for me.

These fricking stiches,
just want them the hell out.

I do need food, too.

We need fuel, 'cause we gotta
finish the dug-out canoe.

Got some squirrels
running around here.

Just looking to see
on this trail if there are
any fresh deer tracks,

but I don't see any.

So it looks like my target
audience today is squirrel.

Oh, there he is. All right,
come on down. Let's play.

Let's play.

*bleep*

damn.

It's hard
to get these little guys

'cause they're small,

they jump around limb to limb.

Frustrating.

I've been pretty bummed.

Me and gary
had an incredible run.

But...

You know, I got ej,

and, um...
I'm done with crying.

You know,
I gotta pick myself up,

dust myself off.

Gary wouldn't want me
dragging around.

It's a cold-ass morning.

Since gary left,
we haven't really gotten
any new food.

You know, this is
a 60-day challenge.

We gotta eat
every single day.

We need to have food
in our stomach

in order for us to perform...

Especially as it gets colder,
we need more calories.

And it's tough.

You gotta check
your lines, though.

You know, you gotta do
all the things that
you need to do in survival.

Wow. The tide
is insanely low right now.

Crazy.

-oh, we got a catfish, baby!

We got a catfish!

Catfish in the morning, baby!

Oh, damn!

What's up, cat?

That's how we do it
out here, fam.

-Ej!
-Yeah.

We got breakfast.

-How many did you get?
-Just one.

that's good enough.

I'm gonna go up
and check the other lines.

Maybe we'll be able
to get one each
on this cold day.

okay.

These nutrients

are so essential.

We need this
dug-out canoe done.

So we need the energy

in order to, you know,
really get this thing done.

Without the energy,
we're toast.

Ah-ha!

you got one?

Ah-ha!

let's go!

Yeah, baby!

yeah!

what you got?

I got one in here,
but he's in this pickle, man.

I've got him. Here, hold this.

Well, give me a chance,
young buck.

I got him.

-You know, I am capable.
You know this, right?
-I know.

oh, yeah.

there you go.

-Here's your knife.
-Hell yeah, brother.

-Thank you.
-You're welcome.

*bleep* yeah!

-Enjoy cleaning that one.
-Huh?

Enjoy cleaning that one.

-You want me to clean it?
-Yeah, you just got it out.

Okay. sounds good.

-I'll go check
the other lines.
-All right.

Hell yeah, well...

I guess I got two fish
to clean.

can't ask for anything
more than that,
two catfish for breakfast.

What I could use
is a little courtesy.

You know, I'm still capable.
I didn't appreciate that.

I'm double-fishing.

trying to help bring it in
for the team...

Busting my ass.

You know, just trying
to get a couple victories
on my own.

I just felt
a little disrespected.

Well, we'll have
a discussion on this.

-Listen, man.
-What?

-I just want to clear the air
right now.
-All right.

- listen, man.
- what?

-I just want to clear the air
right now, man.
-Yeah.

I just wanna say

-over there a moment ago...
-Yeah.

...I just felt
a little disrespected.

I didn't get chance
to even have a shot
at getting the fish out.

And I know it's just a fish...

'cause you just jumped
right in there,
I was like...

Dude,
I didn't even get a chance.

I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to do that.
I was just--

and I know you were probably
just thinking about my balls.

Exactly. I was literally
just jumping in there,

so you didn't
have to worry about
seeping in too far.

And I was like already
in the action.

-I'm sorry, I'm just...
-No...

You know, sometimes
I just get on that line
and just go for it.

I meant no disrespect.

-I appreciate that.
-Yeah.

I just wanted
to clear the air.
You know how I am.

And then I disrespected you
by saying,
"enjoy cleaning them,"

-oh! No, no, no no--
-I just apologized for that

on my end,

'cause that was... I just...

I went and dropped
to a different level.

-Dude, don't even
worry about it.
-Okay.

-And sorry about--
sorry about that.
-It's all good.

-Dude, no disrespect, bro.
Yeah, love you, too, man.
-I love you.

I appreciate it.
I just wanted to air it out.

Yeah, no,

I appreciate you
putting it out there

-'cause I'll do the same
when I feel...
-Absolutely.

-...Feel the same way.
-Cool.

you know,
I'm not here to take
anybody's wins.

I'm a team player
and that's
what it's all about.

It's just trying to play
as a team,

and I respect that we can
talk about that as men

and just put it
to the wayside.

Oh, man.
These fish are really starting
to be hard to come by.

Yeah.

One of those days
when god just says,

"time to get moving on."

you can have
the big one, dude.

I'm good with the tail.

You know how much
I love the tail.

-mmm.
-Good?

Oh, yeah, dude.

it's like...

I feel like the opportunities
are sort of dwindling.

We've thrived here
as much as anybody could.

We better start planning on
getting the hell out of here.

I agree with that.

The resources
are starting to run out.

That water behind me,
this swamp, it's cold.

And gators,
we haven't seen them
in a while.

So we really need to start
thinking about
getting closer to extraction.

It's time.

while steven's out
hunting this morning,

I'm gonna head over
and check my fishing lines.

The first morning
I've been here

that I haven't found a fish.

Our shelter's holding up

and yesterday team savage

gave us the tail section
of a big old fish
that they caught.

But we need to get more food
if we're gonna make it
to the end.

I'm trudging.
I mean, I'm crotch-deep.

There are so many twigs
and fallen trees

out in the thicker grass.

All over the place.

You can't tell anything
from anything else

and it's making the hunting
so much more difficult.

it's just a *bleep* snake.

where'd he go? There he is.

There he is.

A big cottonmouth.

Right there.

that's why it's dangerous

to walk through the swamp.

Just like that,

you could be a dead man.

There may be cottonmouths.

It's cold...

A lot of rattlesnakes.

This could have ended
my challenge...
This guy right here.

look at what
I almost stepped on.

-Baby water moccasin.
-Wow, bro.

-Yeah. Literally...
-Dude.

Went right underneath my foot.

It's not a lot of meat.

But I think it'd be
awesome fish bait.

Cut that up into
half-inch chunks.
Half-inch pieces...

And I think
it's something new.

-Yeah.
-We can use the guts,
we can use the meat.

-I like that plan.
-Yeah.
I think it's a good plan.

I don't think I've ever used

a snake as fish bait before.

Out here in the swamp,

you gotta use everything
and everything

because you won't know
when your next opportunity
is going to be.

we should probably
go check on our canoe,

-see what progress
we can put into it today.
-Yeah.

And hopefully we can
get out of here within
the next couple of days.

I hope so.
I think it'll be a good push.

We got a lot done so far.

-The other day,
that last day's burn...
-Yeah.

...Really got us
over the hump, I think.

So I think we go down,
look at what we got...

-Yup.
-...Make a plan.

Good to see the sun
even though
the wind's blowing.

it is howling.

and it is cold.

- oh, yeah.
That looks great.
-Oh, man.

-Wow. A lot of progress.
- a lot of progress.

Get this thing burning
for the rest of the afternoon.

This canoe has been
quite the daunting task
to undertake.

It's tough and grueling work.

But we still have to make
it to this extraction.

And without it,

there's no way
we can get off this island.

There we go.

this canoe was a log.

It doesn't have the same
hydrodynamics as a canoe.

In order for us
to offset that,

we need to have a form
of outrigger or support system

that will counterbalance
any sort of tippyness.

If it goes to the left,
it'll be buoyant on
the left-hand side.

If it goes to the right,
there'll be weight
on that left-hand side.

this is gonna be
the pontoon to our outrigger
for our canoe...

there's no doubt it--

...We could flip.

And if you fall in this water
in the swamp with this wind,

man, you can get the
hyperthermia really quick.

So we're plaining
and shaving the tree down
to get the bark off it

so it'll be easier to dry out.
It'll be more buoyant

and then save
all these shavings here

in case we need to make a fire
on the way, we'll have
dried out good tinder.

It's called smart survival,
thinking ahead,
don't waste any resources.

so, today,
it is freezing cold outside.

The wind
has switched directions.

We're getting clouds in
from the gulf.

And you can tell right way,
we are about to hit
some kind of front.

So there's almost nothing
more vital than a solid
collection of firewood.

- my feet
are completely numb.
-Oh, man.

- if you wanna
go ahead, I'll carry it.
-Okay.

it's an extremely cold wind

which is unsettling,
because it could be bringing
even colder weather.

There ain't nothing biting.

No, nothing.

Water is too cold.
Nothing is rolling,
nothing is biting.

Check my line.

Oh, my god.

I don't think I have ever
used a snake
as fish bait before.

Holy *bleep*!

Literally frozen.
That fish is solid as a rock.

The catfish I just caught,
it's so cold right now,

it's literally like
he came out of an ice box.

Our fish
are freezing out here.

That's how you know
winter is here.

It's always riskier
to do this kind of stuff
in this cold weather because

you can't feel your hands,
you can't feel your feet.

You're dealing
with a really sharp knife
and a slippery catfish.

You know, the cold does
a number on everything,

it does stuff to you
physically,

messing with your brain,
mentally.

All these things are recipes
for kind of a disaster.

Right now,
it is as wintery as possible.

It feels like snow is
in the air.

That's how bad it is.

So we have to make
the shelters

as good as we can
possibly make it

and just hope
the weather gets better.

Rylie, is that hole
right about here?

Yeah,
that's exactly where it is.

from inside
the shelter,

I can see light
in a few different spots.

And, I'll tell you what,
if there's light going in,
then heat can go out.

So, I got rylie
on the inside right now

helping me find these holes.
From the outside,
you can't see them.

It would need to go more
towards your stick?

yeah,
this is the hole.
It's through.

this is the first time

any xl has ever been
put in a place

where it's progressively
turning to winter.

We've lost a lot of fat.
This is getting...

To where it will be
the worst of the worst
for the next 14 days.

Sorry it took so long, man,
but I got us dinner.

-What? Oh, dude, good job.
-Yeah! Yeah. Thanks, man.

I had to go in,
it was so cold.

oh, my god!
It is cold, buddy.

And it's gonna drop
probably another 25 degrees.

- oh, yeah.
-Tonight.

Gosh, I feel miserable.

I can't even explain to you,
how cold it is.

But just look at my breath.

we're naked, we've got nothing
but a deer hide each.

And so hypothermia is
absolutely possible tonight.

Ooh, baby,
it's getting
cool out here, bro.

so, without a doubt, tonight
is probably the coldest
that we've ever seen.

I think it, so far, is...

It feels colder than any
challenge I've ever
seen before.

we're doing the best
we can, but this is no place
for naked people.

No place at all.

as soon as you start
dipping down into
the freezing--

freezing realms,
it is no joke.

Ej is just trying
to get comfortable over here.

- my eyelids
are frozen shut.

just gotta make it
through the night,

and hopefully,
it starts getting warmer
after this.

'cause... Don't know
how many more nights
we could pull of like this.

Winter is no longer coming,
because winter is here.

it is cold outside.

And when I say cold,
like, frost on the ground.

There is no dew, um...

I'm not gonna go outside.
I'll peek through here.

You can see that,
through the fog and the mist
and the frost on the ground,

it is frozen outside.

You can literally
see your breath.

Walking out in that naked
is a death sentence.

So we're going to wait
this out because

we're not dumb.

we have frozen feet.
Frozen extremities.
Other ones are burned.

You get so close to a fire
that one side of your body
feels like it might boil,

while the other still feels
like it might freeze.

Think ryan
trying to shake his feet out.

Rylie's cooking hers
like a rotisserie.

It is truly cold.

And into the winter

I step full force.

It's below freezing.
It is that cold.

-I--
-we're talking less than
32 degrees.

The mud,
you can't even squish it.

-The mud is like rock-hard ice
right now.
-Yeah.

-Whoa!
-My feet are turning into
ice blocks pretty quickly

so I'm going back inside.

- go, go, go.
-Going in.

- back to the fire.

we kinda do have to
hunker down in the shelter.

We got just about two weeks
to go, so...

Let's see what we can do.

Hopefully,
we don't freeze to death.

ah, man,
it is cold out there.

okay. Holy cold.

Wind's hocking out there.

Obviously, old man winter
is showing up.

Last night, it was like
he was trying to knock
the door down.

It was frigid.
The wind was slipping in

every little crack it could.

It is frigid out here.

hey.

hi.

Ready for this?

yes, I've been
ready for a while.

Today is the day
I'm so excited to celebrate,

'cause them stitches
should be coming out.

I'm so happy
this day is here.

how's it looking, doc?

it looks good.

You're at the point where
you don't really need
the stitches in anymore.

-Here we go.
- let's do this.

Nine stitches to go.

The medics taking
the stitches out
as we speak

right here

and it's freezing.

I'm ready to get
these out though.

The day has finally came.

wow.
You did a number
on your balls, bro.

yeah. Sure did.

if that was
my situation,
I would tap out.

No way no how
I'd still be here

if I had a hole
in my ball sack.

This guy is cut
from a different cloth.

that was
the last of the stitches.

is it out?

it's out.

Freedom!

Yes!

All intact. Still here.

This is great, because now,
I'll be able to do
much more work.

I can do all kinds
of good stuff now.

Unleash the beast.

In the last quarter!

our
environment's changed.

It's turning winter.

Yes. The water levels
are lower than we've
ever seen them.

And the cold-blooded
reptiles I think are...

- they're done.
-...Are history.

During the winter,
we have to change tactics

to hunt.

The cold-blooded animals,
they're not gonna be
a target species

for the rest of
this challenge.

Think we're gonna have to,

you know, start thinking about

land animals.

woodland.

Woodland creatures.

Yeah. Warm-blooded.

It is freezing cold outside,
but we still have almost
two weeks to this challenge

and we can't hunker down
in the shelter forever.

We need to find food,
we need to find something.

And the only way
to find it,

we gotta go from scales
and reptiles

to fur and woods.

- the final burn!
-Yeah, final burn!

Nice.

Here we go.

-Oh, yeah.
-Oh, man.

that looks great.
That's look really good.

Wow. A lot of progress.

a lot of progress.

We've dug out
a lot of the canoe.

Everything's
nice and wide
at this point,

but we still need to
get down further

and focus a lot
of our energy

burning in the center

in order for us to, uh...

Get this ship sailing.

-Nice. Let's get on it.
-Righteous. Yep.

So right now,
I'm currently mudding up

the edges of our canoe.

This will allow it to continue
burning through the canoe

instead of burning
our edges and really

compromising
the structural integrity
of our canoe.

Yeah, we should let this burn.

And then come back
when the coals are down
a little bit more.

Yeah, baby!

Ready for the pontoon.

Okay.

using our own ingenuity
putting the, uh,

pontoon for our outrigger
over the burning canoe

to help dry it out,
get some of
the moisture out.

And then we just gotta
cut it down to size,
it will be ready.

That'll dry her out, right?

yeah.

we're almost
out of here.
Couple days,

it will be
smooth sailing.

We just gotta make sure

the most critical

That's right. For sure.

I'm just praying for like
a ten-day warm...
Warm spell.

a warm front's pushing

there'll be a little rain.

I'm gonna go

What the *bleep*?

Ej!

what?

we gotta put that out.

holy crap!

*bleep*

ow! That's hot!

This could be a disaster!

ow! That's hot!

This could be a disaster!

I'm a little worried
about this side wall
right here.

-We gotta mud that down.
-Okay.

The wind was blowing
in such a direction that

the right side of the canoe,
the fire was more intense

and the walls were thinning
more than we wanted.

We had to get
into action mode,
get mud on them,

cool them out,

and I think we got here
just in time.

This could have
been disastrous.

The whole canoe
could have went up.

That was close.

so close.

All right, my spear.

And we're good to go.

I would say it's at least
10 to 15 degrees

You just never know

When the sun's out,
we gotta do what we can

and utilize the daytime

dwindling resources
and the cold weather.

are we gonna
bring the bow, just in case?

-Yeah, oh, yeah.
-All right.

today, rylie and I
are going woodland.

We've got to continue
to move further and further
into the woods

to find these animal sites.

there ain't nothing
in this thing.

I'm out here, uh,
in this untapped area

moving around,
exploring this area.

jean lafitte?

-He bent a small oak tree
over like this.
-Yeah.

-So he knew
where his treasure was.
-No way.

We could be sitting
on millions of doubloons
of dollars.

Dude, but this is our treasure
for the night.

-We gotta set up camp.
-Absolutely hot.

We could probably
set sort of a lean-to up here.

-Probably on this side
'cause north is over here.
-Yeah.

-And then we could put
the fire right here.
-Right here.

That will be
a perfect reflector
for both of us

while we will have this
lean-to right here.

How about I get working
on a fire

-to get us something
going real quick.
-Yeah.

-I'll start trying to figure
out the shelter situation.
-Yeah.

I'm tired, we've been rowing
all day. My back hurts.

My knees are killing me.
But max and I

have arrived. The barbarians
have landed on the beach!

I'll already took this cypress
from the cypress bark.

I'm building this
makeshift lean-to.

It's really something
really temporary
for the night.

And preventing any
weather to come in
from the north side.

So we got the north side
shielded and we got fire
underneath this oak.

Feeling, feeling stressed out.

Feeling like we are against
the clock right now.

Whoo! I hear fire.

I smell fire.

You got that fire?

Fire!

Yeah.

Hey, this is gonna be
*bleep* great, man. Whoo!

Man, these are better
than the ones we had.

Definitely.

It's not gonna be pretty,

but daylight is going down

and it's gonna get cold.

Settled in for the night.

It's gonna be a cold night.

Last three nights
have been pretty chilly.

Tonight's gonna be
no different.

The only difference
is gonna be,

we don't have the warm
chateau de la swamp
to help us.

But we got a good fire going.

A lot of firewood.

And we got our pelts,
and that's all we can do.

That's our situation
for the night.

It is...

Freezing cold right now.

And we are just
hanging on tight,

getting our fire stoked.

Wrapped up in our pelts.

This is gonna be
a long night ahead.

You can feel
the temperatures dropping.

We are thankful for this fire.

It's what's keeping us
in the fight right now.

It is damp and wet.

Cold and wet.

Those are the type of things
that take you out of
the challenge.

Now that's is hyperthermia.

That could have been
a bad, bad decision
for us to have moved.

the xls
or xl success metric

calculates each team's
likely percentage

of completing
the 60 day challenge together.

Mother nature shows no mercy
to us.

after finally
shoring up their shelter...

We're bayoued up now.

... Jeff and steven
were able to weather

the most severe conditions
of the challenge.

It is cold.

but as temperatures
have dropped...

Hyperthermia is absolutely
possible tonight.

...So has their
steady supply of protein.

It so cold right now.

Our fish are freezing
out here.

That's how you know
winter is here.

and
for their neighbors...

It is that cold.

...The onset
of winter

forced a change in strategy...

Think we're gonna have to,

you know, start thinking
about land animals.

Got him.

...That led to
a small but impressive win.

I knew it. I said we are gonna
*bleep* get something today.

but with ten days
remaining in the challenge...

We are starting to think
we're gonna travel through
unknown destination,

closer to extraction point.

...Both
teams realized

their strength in numbers.

-Really, this is kind of
the merging up of...
- yeah.

People of resources, of ideas.

now as they prepare
for a difficult
land trek north,

their xls metrics are
recalculated for a 5% team.

And their chance of completing
the challenge together

is set at 54%.

After the loss
of a teammate...

Barbarians, ha!

...Max and ej's
extensive canoe project
paid off

as they headed north
for higher ground.

You sure it look like
where we're at, brother?

A lot thicker.

and discovered
a land full of promise.

Oh, look at these deer tracks.

-Oh, hell yeah.
-I like this place already.

but now they face
a freezing night
without a complete shelter.

We just need something
really temporary for the night

and prevent any weather
to come in.

And that's all we can do.
This's our situation
for the night.

as a result,
their two-man xls metric

is set at 36%.

It is freezing cold.

That could have been
a bad, bad decision
for us to have moved.

Turning this

hide from a maximus,

turning it into
a little backpack

to help carry
some of the stuff today.

Tying my quiver to it.

Arrows are protected,
got my fishing kit

and a couple of things
I can strap on to it.

Should be good way
to make it kinda
make the trek.

No matter what,
hell or high water,
we're travelling north.

We are in search
of a better spot
on the way to extraction.

Extraction is a long way south

and the only way to get there
is to walk.

So, it's unknown.

Somehow packed up,
pretty much.

Oh, boy. Skull.

Got a fire starter.

Beard comb for ryan,
hair comb for riley.

Some extra cordage.

Arrowheads. Then we have
fishing line
with two hooks.

I think that's everything.

-Moving day, baby.
-Moving day.

We are going north?

-Which means dry ground.
-Yep.

Here is... We are all
pretty much packed
and ready.

I'll get all my snares
over there. Got my

pair of cords.

Wrapped up all my braces
and brackets from my snares,

my pelt, pretty much prepped
and ready.

And we are gonna hit
the road, baby.

Get the gator head
and my spear and bow.

-What do you think?
-I'm gonna wrap
the fishing pole.

Ryan, can you put
the backpack?

I've got my backpack
and the water pots.

We are traveling light
'cause we are probably
going far.

-Savages.
-Hello.

- hey.
-You all packed up?

-Yeah.
-Good to go.

Yeah, we are all ready to go.

-You can handle the journey?
-Yep.

-Yeah.
-It's gonna be
a heck of a journey.

This is become our homestead.
It's become a place
that we have learnt

every square inch of.

But you know what?

If you wanna go and you wanna
exceed in a bigger ways,

sometimes you have to leave
everything you know.

Welcome the unknown
and that's exactly
what we're going to do.

let's be careful,
these are the ones that
are moving today.

They're moving
every time someone steps.

I've walked this
so many times, you know?
Holy *bleep*.

Holy *bleep*. Would that be
a bad way
to start the trek, huh?

-I know.
-Somebody going in the drink,
oh, my lord.

nice, dude.

seat for now.

in the morning,

last night was cold,
real cold.

You know, fidget,
probably into the 40's.

So...

We gotta focus on

creating a shelter
that is gonna...

Keeps us warm
as humanely as possible.

This cold,
will zap you of all your heat.

And, um, every time you get
zapped of heat,

you're gonna burn calories
that warm back up.

And we're at a point where
we don't have free calories

to give away besides
setting up shelter,

hunting and doing
the very necessities
of survival.

so today
we need to sharp
our wall on the northside.

And build a matching one
on the southside.

Yeah, I got it.

We're, uh, working
on the shelter.

And here we're gonna
do the same thing here
on the other side.

Work it around,
this is just the first layer.

oh, this is gonna
look great.

-Good exercise gives us
warm blood on a cold day, huh?
-Oh, yeah.

This portion of the challenge,

it's all about winning
these nights.

These cold nights.

good work. Good work.

This is a cold mud right here.

It's brutal, but at least
we're not working through
knee-deep water.

Yeah, at least
we're not walking
in that foggy stuff.

So this hike
is definitely chilly.

The mud on our feet
is chilling us to the bones.

But at the same time,
we know it's a means
to an end.

A means to a new destination.

And we're just gonna trekking
through this because

there's a home out there
somewhere waiting for us.

Rylie, how're you holding up
with the cold?

Well, I'm pretty sure
I had feet.

-don't know
if I still have feet.

At least you can't feel
how bad they're doing.

we're up
to our ankles in mud

and the mud's frozen and...

Your feet, you're getting
so hard and so frozen that
stepping on all the thorns

and all the sharp punji sticks
and all these things,

you're thinking,
"that should hurt."

and it doesn't.
So, that's alarming.

Check out
this tight little canal.

Yeah.

Yeah, this is a good sign.
Guys, look
at all the snail shells.

-Oh. Hey, hail the snail.
-There's ton of them.

Hail the snail.

hmm.

-Hey, guys. Check this out.
-What's that?

Yeah, what does
that look like?

-It looks like
a dugout canoe.
-That's a primitive canoe.

It's an outrigger...

I smell smoke.

-Somebody's got a fire out.
-Oh, my god.

Oh, this is gonna look great.

-It's gonna kill you.
-Yeah.

listen. Hear a bunch of...

What?

-Think I see naked people.
-What?

-I think I see people.
-Hello?

Hello?

-yeah!
