Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 7, Episode 5 - Itching for Revenge - full transcript

I'm feeling nauseous.

I ate too much alligator fat.

Ugh.

[max] how you feeling?

[groans]

oh, god. [barfs]

[groans]

[burps]

[sighs]

[groans]

[amber] you okay?

Yeah. I'm just nauseous
from eating
all that fat today.

There are many risk factors

about everything
that gary eats,

there's so many times
I look at what he eats

and I'm like,
"uh-uh, I can't do that."

I don't want to risk getting
sick out here

because me, personally,
it's not a safe move
as a survivalist.

That would suck
to get a medical tap, dude.

Yeah. [burps, groans]

I eat fat a lot.

Greasy food, you know,
out in the real world...

This is nothing new to me.

Yeah. [sighs]

it'll just *bleep* me
for a while tonight.

[amber] gary,
what are you doin'?

Checking this out
for what's edible on here.

[amber] gary...

For the love of god.

I'm looking at him like,
"oh, my gosh, you are crazy!"

it is intense and insane
all wrapped in one.

But that's gary golding.

[gary] come on, just one bite.

[amber laughs] no.

[narrator]
with winter approaching
across the bayou,

the team of matt,
rylie and ryan

have seen
their food supply dwindle...

[rylie] yeah.

[narrator]
...And a small rodent
is causing big problems

for matt and ryan.

Son of a bitch.

[ryan] go check our fish trout
and re-bait it

with some crawfish
if we find some.

Matt and I have a nutria itch,

it's a bacteria
that the nutria rodent
release through their feces.

And keeps me out of the water.

So now we can't actively
cross the creek
and explore different areas.

It's just putting
a huge handicap
on this group

and our chances
of getting food.

[rylie] I don't think
there's anything.

[matt] don't hear anything
flipping and flopping.

[rylie] no, nothing in there.
Still stinks, though.

[ryan] what a drag.

Yeah. Well, let's hope
a deer comes lurking...

-...'cause that still
looks juicy right there.
-I think so.

Come check on this
after a little bit today.

This right here
is a nutria trail.

-Oh, yeah?
-Yep.

These nutria tracks
look very similar
to a raccoon.

It has some
webbing on its feet.

That's a ten-pound thing.

This is a solid...
Like rabbit size, at least.

-[ryan] and those are
fresh tracks.
-Oh, they're very fresh.

[matt] I just found
a whole bunch of nutria tracks

which is huge.

Been looking for this now
for 17 days.

This is a straight-up
nutria path.

[matt] so where does it go?

I have a feeling he walks down
this log right here,

then echoes into this grass
through that other stump.

So this right here,
check that out.

Oh, wow.

-So you could see where he's--
-yeah.

He's climbing up here,

he's going through
this whole vegetative area.

This is his standard path

which indicates
that there's a nutria den
somewhere,

somewhere these nutria,
like, digging holes,
like many other rodents.

[matt] though nutria
is a nocturnal rodent.

Well, that's an advantage
for us in some ways because

if we figure out
where he's hiding,

we can ambush him.

-It's all hollow in there,
isn't it?
-Yeah.

That's his hole right there.

I would almost gamble

to bet he's in this
hollow part right now,
just hunkered in there.

[rylie]
just smoke him out here.

We blow a fire in that hole,

and it's gonna smoke
like a perfect chimney
up that thing.

[rylie] yeah, it is.

Let's go back and we'll carry
that fire over on a palm frond
leaf or something.

Yeah.

[rylie] the weather feels like
it's turning a bit,

and now... We're definitely
dealing with a winter climate.

We don't know
where the resources are

or if they will return...

So to see signs of a nutria,

hopefully we can
take advantage of that
before another cold snap.

All right.
Well, let's come up,
get some fire.

Operation nutria.

Let the battle begin.

[narrator]
fifteen miles to the east,

jeff and steven finally
landed the big score
they need.

[grunts]

this changes
the entire challenge for us.

-We are on top.
-Yes.

Mm.

-It's so good to eat breakfast
in the morning.
-Yeah.

For real.

You know what?

I'm gonna eat
this alligator's testicles.

-Really?
-Yeah.

I'm looking forward
to that moment.

We feasted last night.

Our bellies are still full.

All right.
So what plans for the day?

-I'm gonna work
on the tree-smoker.
-All right.

Hopefully I can keep
that thing chugging all day.

I'm just gonna finish
processing
all that meat today.

-Sounds like a game plan.
-All right.

[jeff]
mondo, the monster alligator,
we got him

and we've spent
the last 48 hours

butchering, prepping,
field-dressing and smoking

probably well over
60 pounds of meat.

We got a smorgasbord
right here.

I'm literally gonna
let it smoke here
all day long.

I'm gonna string up
some of the meat
that we already have prepped,

and all this smoke
is going to cure that
and it into jerky.

So... Another busy day.

-We're getting flies out here.
-This is what we didn't want.

The flies
are starting to come out.

We know the clock's ticking.

We have to prep this meat.

And we're gonna have
two smokers
working simultaneously.

We are working
as fast as we can
this morning.

All right. There we go.

The tree-trunk smoker,
it's going to be smoking meat

all day long.

[chuckles] and it's already
starting to come out the top.

Beautiful.

[jeff] steven is hanging me
inside the shelter.

Basically turning out shelter
into a meat-smoking machine.

We've got quite the setup
going here.

As you can see,
the meat in here

already is starting to have
a nice crust to it.

[coughs, laughs]
it's freaking wonderful.

I'm choking
on the smoked flavor
of our meat.

[sighs] ah.

Mondo, the kill of our lives.

We can carry this energy
level through
an entire 60-day-challenge.

We are the primary predators
out here in this swamp.

Is that an eyeball?

That's definitely
not an eyeball.

It's a what?

Oh, my god, it's an egg.

-Look.
-I think it's a testicle.

-No, that's an egg.
-That's an egg.

Well, I'll be damned.

So I guess I'm not eating
testicles then. [chuckles]

-no, it's a chick.
-[both laughing]

[steven] I was really looking
forward to that, too.

This whole time
I've been telling steven,

"I'm gonna eat
this alligator's testicles.

It's a man thing.
I'm just gonna do it.

I'm gonna throw 'em
in my mouth--

I don't even care.
I'm gonna eat his balls."

and... It's a female.

There's a little part of me
that's grateful

that we didn't find any balls
on this guy.

We have
so much delicious meat.

I'm gonna stick to ribs.

From the river
to the rack, baby.

Yeah, buddy.

[matt] we're going to battle.

For nutria, we need weapons.

[rylie] all right.
We got the fire.

[ryan] all right. Let's do it.

Unfortunately,
this nutria itch

keeps me
from getting in the water.

So even though
I can't go wade through
the swamp,

I can get us food.

When it comes to game animals,
the hunt is on.

And I have never wanted
to hunt a nutria more
in my entire life.

It is my nemesis right now.

Let's go to war, shall we?

Let rylie feed it

and then, ryan,
you and I will assume
some positions here.

And if he comes,
pokes his head out this crack,

I'll stick him to the log.

-All right.
-[ryan] he better be in there.

Soon as this gets
where the smoke
starts coming out at the top,

you need to be
as quiet as possible

and he'll hopefully
peak his little head out
hoping to get some better air.

-We got flame.
-Cook him out, girl.

The smoke's starting to come
out of that hole over there.

-Oh, yeah.
-[rylie] is it?

He's gotta be feeling
the heat too.

[rylie]
it's smoky as hell over here.

[matt] come on, buddy.
See you in there.

[rylie] I'll keep this going
as long as I can.

Or he could just be chilling
in the end,
like, the end of his hallway.

-[matt] yeah.
-[ryan] let me try...

I mean, this is a long spear.
Let me try
sticking it down there,

so he can feel anything.

-From the top. Yeah.
-[rylie] sure.

He's gotta be
in there somewhere.

I mean, he would have to be
in this little four-foot,

three-foot section,
I don't know.

-It's getting burned up.
-Yeah.

[rylie] no movement.

Nope.

[matt] we smoked the hell
out of this tree just now,

and that nutria
is just not in it.

What are you thinking, matt?

[matt] uh...

We gave it
a damn hell of a try.

[rylie] yeah, we did.

You think
we could set up a snare
on that little game path

-and call it good?
-Yeah.

We tried to smoke it out,

that didn't work
because we figured out
that he wasn't home.

But we know where
this thing is,
we know where it's living,

and we have a good chance
at snaring this nutria.

Going bit on the weak side.

So am I, not performing
at a 100% right now.

Nope.

[narrator]
nine miles to the west,

after seeing both his partners
succumb to the elements...

It's a daunting task.

Who knows how this journey
is truly gonna end?

[narrator] ...Ej is desperate
for a big protein win.

[grunts, sighs]

I'll go check
my fishing lines.

Okay, let's see.

Ah, that sucks.

Ah, nothing yet.

It's been a couple of days
since I've had
a good meal now.

And now that I'm a lone wolf,

if I don't get food,
it's on me.

Come on, fishy fishies.

Ah...

[blows air, exclaims]

let me get it right there.

[sighs]

I am starting to get hungry

and I'm really getting anxious
to get out there
and get after some food.

Six lines in the water...
Doing some work for me.

Okay, you're in.

Please, spirits, something...
Anything.

Now, let me check that
other line over here.

The bait on it
had a crawfish on it
a while back.

I completely forgot about it.

I was checking other ones.

[exclaiming] whoa!

I got a catfish!

Yeah, baby! Ha-ha-ha!

Oh, man. Right on time.

Yeah!

Yeah!

I'm eating tonight!

This is the first meal
I'll have
since I've been alone...

Yeah!

I'm so happy.

Thank you, little buddy. Mwah.

Yes. Damn, I needed that.

That was so awesome.

This fish is so good.
[chuckles]

I feel all those oils,
all those vitamins...

Going right through my body
and just doing their thing.

That catfish
might have just been
the game-changer for me.

But now,
I really, really need to get
a steady supply of food.

Being alone...
That's long-term survival.

[burps, exclaims]
that's a good meal.

[animal growling]

[steven] listen.

-Did you hear that?
-Yeah.

That was a male alligator.

-Oh, really?
-Yeah.

[alligator growling]

[whispering]
the deeper, guttural growl,
the bigger the alligator.

That means
at least ten feet...

He's freaking big.

[alligator continues growling]

I think that might
not have been mondo.

That might have been
his big fat girlfriend
that we ate.

Oh, boy.

And now he's looking for her.

Yeah, he is looking for her...
That's why he's calling her.

[alligator growling]

an alligator that big
is gonna defend his territory
from anything and anybody.

Not just alligators
but us too.

[growling grows louder]

[alligator growling]

that's a male alligator...

A big one.
It's letting people know
this is his territory.

[whispering]

[water splashes]

that was nuts.

We definitely have to be
more vigilant...

-Getting in the water,
walking down to the...
-[growls]

...To the river
in the morning
and in the afternoon.

Crazy.

Big boy, that's a big boy.

[amber]
the meat is so spoiled,
you can smell it.

[gary] oh, yeah,
the meat's bad.

[max] it's been a week.

I think six days
is my threshold.

Unless it's, like,
properly smoked.

-[gary] thank you, diana,
for everything you've done--
-[max] thank you.

-You fed me.
-You fed us.

Yeah, us.

[amber] we've eaten
every part of the gator
except for his hands.

Really need
to catch more fish.

-Look at that. I think
we should use it for bait.
-[max] yeah.

I think fresh bait like this
is what really
makes a difference.

This is a perfect
type of bait.

It stinks so bad
it'll make that water ripe,
maggots coming off of it.

It's gonna be perfect bait,
and I guarantee you

we're going to catch
a fish with it.

Okay. And the bait is going on
this one, I'm gonna throw it
about 35 feet.

-Good throw.
-Thank you.

[max] amber,
she's working her line,
she's a savage fisher.

She's putting in the work
that needs to be done
in order for us to succeed.

[amber] we need to get
some more catfish,

we have to get
food in our bellies,

because we're worried
that gary is gonna
eat something

really crazy
and poisons himself.

I mean, shoot.
These are my family
out here,

gary and max, and I'll always
provide for them.

Like to catch,
like, 20 catfish.

All right. I'm gonna go
set this nutria snare.

-I won't be long.
-[rylie] okay.

What I've got here
is all the pieces for
a spring-snare.

I like to do
a constrictor knot, so when
it tightens up on that animal,

it's not gonna come loose,
and the more they struggle,
the tighter it's gonna get.

Right here, you've got your
notched-out little toggle.

So this notch on your toggle
is gonna fit right in here,

into the notch,
with the stake.

And this stake's
gonna be planted
into the ground.

So you take your stake,
jam it into the ground,

you've got your noose.

Then you wanna take this
and tie it to the tree.

Take your little notch
on your toggle,

put it into the notch
on your stake,
and let go of the tree.

Now, you wanna open up
the noose over the game path,

find yourself a little
y stick like this,

and all you wanna do
is open up that hole.

He's gonna come in here,
trigger that,

and his arm just,
he's just gonna go
straight up into the air.

And he'll just
be dangling there.

So I've got my pieces,
I've got the snare,

I just need to take it down
to this nutria path,

and hopefully,
it'll work tonight
on this nutria.

-Yeah.
-[ryan] such a good spot.

[matt speaking]

[ryan] that is all tension.

[matt speaking]

beautiful, man.

Yeah! That's exactly
like I wanted it.

But I think,
I think it's in the zone.

-For me, that's gorgeous.
-Yep.

Let's get back
and wash up to eat.

-Wow, you're really excited
about that, aren't you?
-Yeah, buddy.

I think it's as good a
shot as me.

Dude, how about that
alligator bellow last night?

Oh, my gosh!

That sounded
like a dinosaur.

-It was!
-Outside of our shelter.

[steven] it was a dinosaur.

We were in jurassic park
last night.

I'm telling you.
That was jurassic park.

I think he was calling
for his woman.

And his woman's hanging
above our fireplace
right now.

Dude! I mean, that should
worry us, you know?

When you get to be so close
to a male alligator

vocalizing in this way,

I mean, it makes the hair
stand up on the back
of your neck.

This gator, he could be
ten, 12 feet long.

This is a true man-eater.

He's a monster,
for sure.

[jeff] yeah, man.
We need to go after him.

[steven] the food sources
out here, a majority of them
are cold-blooded.

And once that
cold weather really hits,

all those alligators
are gonna go dormant.

The snakes are
gonna go dormant.

The fishing's even gonna
become more difficult.

So, we need to get
as much protein and food
stockpiled as we can,

coming into these
colder months.

All right.

I got a nice, big hunk
of liver and fat.

[sniffs]

it smells terrible. [chuckles]

but, uh, I don't know,
if I was an alligator,

that looks pretty yummy.

Our alligator mondo, um,

happens to be a female.

She is great
bait out there

for a husband,
or boyfriends out there.

That's gonna bring him
in to kind of check out
what's going on.

And we'll probably end up
getting him next.

I gotta keep my head
on a swivel,

trust my instincts
and make sure
I don't end up

being swamp thing's breakfast.

There's something
moving around out there.

Where did that
creepy shadow go?

[ej] drop hook.

With a bobber.

Snake spear, just in case
they're around here somewhere.

Now that I've got
some food in my belly,

I want to scout out
some more spots

so I can find better
hunting grounds

than what I've been
subject to.

You wanna eat,
you gotta get out there

and you gotta be
out there every day.

That's the only way
you can take care of yourself
in an environment like this.

Hmm.

Oh, wow.

That's a deer track.
That's fairly fresh.

I kind of see where
it looks like there's
a little bit of a game trail.

Because of the cold,
the water level's
significantly dropped.

So, because I can see
some high ground here,

I bet you the deer
just crossing the water
over here,

for whatever reason,
that come over here,

graze, maybe get a drink.

So if this deer's
coming through here,

this is a... What we
call in the military
a "choke point."

and if I find a really
good spot,

I can get a clear shot of 'em
coming right up through here.

This is actually
the first time
I see deer tracks.

This is a good sign.
I may have found
the honeypot.

I think I see something.

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa!

Moccas... Moccasin.

[moccasin hissing]

he's moving. [exhales]

kind of in his turf,
so let's see
what he's gonna do.

Water moccasin is
a nasty, venomous snake.

It will chase you and it
will continue to bite you

till either you go away
or you die.

Oh, my gosh.

Yep, he's on to me.

He's pissed.

He's in the strike
position now.

Okay.

[grunts]

[ej] he's in the
strike position now.

He's pissed.

Damn it.

I have concerns
about being bitten
by a venomous snake.

But with these
water moccasins,

you ain't got no time
to be scared.

If you want to eat,
you just have to go for it.

Okay.

Where's your head?

Ah, it's freaking mud.

Okay, we're just
gonna go back here
and dispatch ya.

Let's pull you out.

You treat all snakes

is if they're venomous
whether they are or not.

Venomous snake bite,
that's a tap out,
right off the bat.

It's a good size.

Should make
a good dinner.

Lone wolf strikes again.

[groans]

this one I get
all to myself.

I love to have partners.

I gave everything
that I could

for them to get further.

But on this good side,

well, no more mouths
but myself to feed,

so more chow for me.

[exhales deeply] it's gonna
give me the energy I need

to push on,
to get the bigger game.

Whether it be a gator
or a deer.

Hey.

Nah, it can't be.

Is that a turtle?

Looks like two of them.

Dude! One of those
would be a good meal.

Now, I don't know
if this is the brightest
idea in the world,

but I could just
swim over there,

go underwater
and pop up and grab 'em.

Worth a try.

Yesterday, after I ate
a bunch of alligator,

my tummy got a little,
like, nauseous.

But feels good now.

But if we tap into
an alternate food source,

it could be
a game-changer.

Gotta look for alligators,
of course.

There's a definite
risk, for real,

of us out there,
swimming in that water.

I mean, we just pulled
an eight-foot alligator
out of here the other day.

They basically can
rip you to shreds.

What the *bleep*! [chuckles]

[amber] gary, what the hell
are you doing?

[gary] I want to catch
those turtles.

Gary swimming up

in the water to go after
a turtle is illogical.

I'm just making sure
there's not a gator
in the water, sorry.

[max] jumped in. Ha-ha!

[amber] oh, my gosh!
An alligator.

Gary!

Oh, my gosh!
Look at him.

Be careful, gary!

[gary] look, it's going
into the reeds.

That scared me.

That really scared me.

That was quick.

I had to try.

[amber] never
do that again! Ever!

You hear that,
gary golding?

[gary] I'm gonna
keep doing it.

[amber] gary just
wants to push the envelope,

and I don't feel comfortable
with him doing that again

because if he does
get injured,

he's hurting
the team, essentially.

And, we're a team.
We need to make 60 days.

Isn't it funny that

I swam to that log,

and that gator likes to
hang out right by the log?

[laughing]

[jeff] the cold winds
of winter are blowing.

-[steven] tomorrow's
November, right?
-Yeah.

I think I'm gonna go
check out our gator hook
out there.

Okay.

If nothing's on it,

I'll make sure it's baited
and leave it.

Sounds like a plan.

Mine's moving around.
Let me know.

[jeff] yep.

There's definitely
a cold front
that's coming in.

Something's changed.

[steven] feel any tension?

[jeff] our lines have
definitely moved around.

Oh, really?

-My line's probably
all tangled up, huh?
-[jeff] yeah.

Damn it, man.

The river is eerily quiet.

We all know that animals,
they're far more in tune
with the environment

than we are, as people.

And, uh, to see there
absolutely be no action
in this swamp,

it's worrisome.

I don't know whether it means
something bad is coming,

in terms of maybe
a storm,

or whether this means

that animals are just
starting to slow down
for the winter.

Either one
would be devastating.

It's *bleep* cold.

[amber] I want this
overcast to go away
so I can get in the water.

That water's chilly!

[max] might get another
little weather,

weather something,
next couple of days.

I'm a little sketched.
I can feel that
the winds have shifted.

And it's bringing,
like, a cooler front.

[gary] it's definitely
getting cold out here.

And so, we're, you know,
stockpiling firewood,

which is like a furnace,

because I get the big,
hard wood, so work
like furnaces.

F-f-f-firewood!

F-f-f-firewood!

Putting the firewoods
down here.

[max] preparing ourselves
for any inclement weather.

We gotta be able
to not shiver
through the night.

We need to be able
to stay warm.

[gary] not the
worst stockpile.

Just stock into that.

[wind whooshing]

[gary] oh, god.

It's *bleep* freezing cold.

Look at that.
You can see your breath.

[gary shivering] okay.
Oh, god.

It's gonna be tough
making it.

[matt] right now,
it is miserable.

It's been freezing, freezing,
bitterly cold.

Literally 40 degrees.

In all my challenges,
I've never dealt with
that severe temperature.

Man, that cold just touching
your back, right?

-Dude! Upper shoulders,
it hurts!
-Yeah.

Ooh!

[jeff] if a night
like this happens,

and then it rains...

Every single one of us
out here

-is at threat
of not making it.
-Mmm-hmm.

[ej groans]

this is definitely
the coldest night
so far.

This would have
definitely did the girls in.

Just trying to keep
the fire going, but, man,

you can feel that cold's
creeping through.

[amber gasps]

[amber gasps]

[chuckling] ow!

[max] did... Did you
burn your foot?

[amber] no,
the log just slammed
on my whole entire toe.

Oh, my god.

[amber] and, uh, I can't
really feel my pinky toe.

That lug of log
smashed it really good.

My foot is on fire
right now.

I'm not sure what's going on.
It's a lot of pain.

-[max] are you okay?
-[amber] I don't know.

Hoping it's not broken.

[gary] we made it
through the night.

Amber had this big
log fall on her toe
last night.

-And, uh, it hurt bad.
-It hurt really bad.

-She seems to be doing
okay, though, right?
-Yep!

[amber] those two toes
got smashed. They're still
swollen from the log.

I'm looking at them.
They are not broken, burnt,
torn, bleeding.

They survived a 200-pound
log dropping on them.

-She's tough.
-It's, like, purple on
the end, but I'm okay.

-[amber] no tears were shed.
-[gary] no tears were shed.

[gary] just gotta
keep going.

[amber] this is definitely
mind over matter,
sucking up the pain,

is what's really going on.

It doesn't matter how much
pain you're in, you just
got a mission.

You've got to complete it.

So I'm staying
positive with this

and just gonna work hard
and just let my body heal it.

Hurts to walk.

[ej] last night,
it was a very long night.

It was cold.
I had to tend the fire myself,

which is, you know,
something that's just
part of the deal now.

I had three pelts.

I went through half
of my reserve firewood

after I burnt through
everything I had
for the night.

Either one of the girls
were still here,

they wouldn't have been
this morning.

'cause that... That was,
uh, bone-chilling.

I'm seriously concerned
a bit about this cold weather.

If these nights
keep dragging on,
and getting colder and colder,

that's gonna put a damper
on trying to even find
any food.

Now that it's cold,
a deer would be
a great resource

for the fact of its pelt.

And I'm gonna need
some meat smoked

for the days I can't
get something, the days
it's too cold maybe to go out.

So the focus now
is get a big game kill,
a chance

to get some solid food
that will last me

for the long-term
to go the 60 days.

Next, smoker.

When I'm gonna bring in
the big game,

I will have to process it,

get it smoked or cooked
all by myself.

So I need to have
everything set up

before I even go
on the hunt.

So I'm making a smoker,
we'll have a cook area,

that's survival 101.

This should be perfect.

You gotta have a smoker.

Love it when
a plan comes together.

Long-term survival
is about planning
and being prepared.

I plan the day
I'm gonna go on the hunt.

Gonna go early in the morning
and then find a perfect spot.

All the conditions are set
for me to get a big kill.

That looks pretty good.

Luckily there's still
a lot of water left.

Yesterday was a cold one.

It's so cold that
it's just ridiculous.

We have been hit
with a hard, hard
cold snap.

Things hibernate,
they go away,
they go to sleep,

and we're almost set up
for failure.

I'm just praying
to the universe

that the spring snare works.

All right. We set
the nutria snare last night.

First time I've ever
set an actual spring snare.

We set it on that nutria path
that was, like, a highway.

And we are now,
all three

on our way to check
the spring snare.

This might be big breakfast.

Oh, we really need this.

[matt shushing] don't move.

There's a nutria
in the trap. It's still alive.

-[ryan] hold on there.
-[rylie gasps]

[ryan] zoom in.
I'm zoomed in.

[nutria groans]

-[ryan cheers]
-yeah, buddy.

-[rylie] here,
ryan, take this.
-Go get him.

-Got an arrow in him?
-Look at that.

We got an arrow...
We got an arrow struck hard.

[ryan] dude,
this thing is huge.

[all cheering]

big day!

Well done, ryan.

[ryan] oh, my word.

Team savage with
a freaking win today.

Now, I would say
snares are about
a ten percent rule.

About ten percent of the time,
they'll actually
be in the right spot.

But this one time,

he puts his one
spring snare out
the first time,

and it works.

[rylie] all right, boys.

Ryan just got it done
on a nutria revenge.

-We went from the nutria itch
to *bleep* nutria rich.
-[rylie whooping]

-[rylie] yes!
-And this guy
is our nutria bitch.

[rylie] yeah!

-Team savage.
-[whooping]

oh, it weighs, like,
25 pounds!

[matt] we showed
that a little perseverance

we'll come out
with a full belly.

-Freaking well done, buddy.
-[ryan grunts]

[amber] we're burning about
3,000 calories a day.

Pretty much just waiting on
for me to catch fish.

It's gonna happen.
I'm willing it to happen
right now

in my mind
and in my heart.

I believe in it
and that fish is gonna come.

[amber speaking]

I would like to get

some firewood if I can.
I don't know if I could
get out there.

[amber speaking]

[amber] I wouldn't do it.

[grunts]

[gary] I've climbed trees
my whole life.

It's something I do,
it's something I know well.

And so, I've been
eyeballing that tree,

sizing it up for days

for exactly that...
Jumping in it,

and snapping off
some firewood.

[amber] be careful, gary.

I'm looking right now.
That's a good
twelve-foot drop.

[gary exclaims]

[exhales] whew.

[laughs] baby doll.

[amber speaking]

-[gary grunts]
-[amber] oh! *bleep*

[amber speaking]

-[gary grunts]
-[amber] oh! *bleep*

-are you okay?
-[groans]

there we go.

That was fun.

Oh, my gosh,
you're so crazy.

[gary] that's a good way
to get firewood.

On my way down,
I felt the weight of it,

and I was like,
"this branch is heavier
than I expected." [laughs]

[grunting]

oh, my god,
that was freaking insane.

You know, I don't wanna see
gary hurt at all,

so it's a little disheartening
that he's putting himself
on the line

for just some firewood

when we got
plenty of firewood.

It's not like we're
running short on firewood
right now.

Gary? Man, what you did,
it really scared the *bleep*
out of me.

-Okay?
-[gary] what?

-On the tree?
-Oh, yeah.

When you fell
and the tree came on top
of you on the water

on the chest,
that's 15 foot...

-[max] we don't wanna
see you hurt, bro.
-That could really hurt you.

-Yeah, dude.
-It looked cool,

-but it scared
the crap out of me.
-Yeah.

Don't get me wrong,
I know cpr,

I can get you
out of the water.

-[laughing]
-but if you break
your chest cavity or a rib,

-you're out of
this challenge, babe.
-[max] yeah, dude.

[amber] and what's important
is getting my partners
to cross that finish line

together as a team.

[grunts]

I know it's gonna get
brutal-ass cold, man.

[steven] security blanket's
big deal out here.

I think it's gonna
get colder than people
think it is.

Oh, yeah.

[jeff] 38 degrees
while naked

and a humid,
wet environment
feel likes--

-yep, it's the humidity, man.
-[jeff] yeah.

It's gonna be brutal out here.

[jeff] to feel this cold
for the first time?

I'd be lying if I said
it didn't put
a little fear in me.

This is
hypothermia type weather.

It definitely changes
our strategy short-term.

Uh, we are now shifting

from an offensive posture
to a defensive posture.

[steven] dude, this is
gonna make night and day
difference.

-[jeff] oh, yeah.
-And it's gonna keep in heat.

[jeff] we're working
on the roof of our shelter

to hold in the heat,

and to protect all this
gator meat hanging
in the rafters.

Yeah. I'm done, baby.

And then we are going to
collect monumental amounts
of firewood.

Think we're pretty good
on *bleep*.

[grunting]

ahh! *bleep*

-[steven] you all right, bro?
-[groans] yes.

I hate the *bleep* swamp.

[steven] did you hit
your hand or your foot,
or what?

[jeff groans] my ankle.

-[steven] smashed it?
-Smashed it
right in the ankle.

-[steven] oh, ankle smash.
-Right on the ball.

-[steven] oh, god.
-[groans]

-[steven] that's the worst.
-It is.

[steven] take a break, dude.

We got enough big logs
to take us through the night.
Take a breather.

Lord, forgive me
I said a few words
I shouldn't have said,

but, gosh, that hurt.

[groans]

[matt] all right.

-[rylie] mmm.
-[matt] uh-huh.

We're gonna eat, y'all.

[matt] oh, yeah.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

[rylie] mmm, delicious.

-Look at that.
-[matt] yeah.

[rylie] fat drumsticks.

[matt] ooh!

Love that sound.

Size of these organs,
they'll cook quick.

-[rylie] yeah.
-[ryan] definitely.

Until we're ready,
I guess we'll put him
up here.

Yeah. He'll be ready
real shortly.

Revenge of nutria.
That just sounds right.

[ryan] kidneys, liver
and the old testis.

Bon appetit.

-[matt whooping]
-[ryan] we shifted up.

-Team savage for the win!
-Team savage,

going bigger,
going hungry.

-Yep.
-Well, we ain't
going hungry today.

-[rylie] no.
-[matt] nope.

All right.

So, I think we should all
have a bite of the heart
to start it out.

-Yes.
-All right.

To give a respect
to the animal.

Go ahead, ryan,
do the honors.

Mmm. Yeah,
that is delicious.

-Thank you, nutria.
-[ryan] thank you, nutria.

After a bit of a rough patch,

the team definitely needed
a big win.

Cheers to
the nutria testicle...
Still got this itch,

-but this is sweet revenge.
-[matt] sweet revenge.

Mm.

-You can't tell me that's bad.
-[ryan] no, it's not bad.

It's actually
creamy deliciousness.

[ryan] not only did we need
this huge meal

for our bodies physically,

a huge win like this

brings you more joy
than you could
possibly imagine.

Oh, wow.

[matt] oh, yeah.

That is probably one of
the greatest meats

I've actually had
on these challenges.

-[rylie] yeah?
-[ryan laughs]

-fatty, oily.
-[rylie] not gamey.

You would never know
this is a flipping rodent.

It's like a turkey leg.

It does taste like turkey.

Like, this part tastes
just like a turkey leg.

I myself have never
eaten nutria,

but it's really good.

Feel like I have
a lot of energy,

so fingers crossed
things are looking up.

I'll tell you what,

-other people
might be surviving...
-[laughs]

-...But it is hard to eat
as good as we're eating.
-I know.

I hope they are doing as well.

[matt] I hope so.

It's a tough environment,
man, to be out here hungry.

[amber] it's so cold.
I'm, like, shaking.

[max whispers] it's so cold.

Just trying to stay warm.

[amber speaking]

-[max] oh, my god.
-[amber] they're ice.

[amber] I can't feel my knees.

Amber's feet
are literally frozen.

[amber shudders]

[amber speaks]

[wind blowing]

[jeff] what in the world?

*bleep*

[rumbling]

*bleep*

*bleep*

*bleep*

[speaks indistinctly]

[jeff] I heard it
starting to give way.

So I reached and I grabbed
the rafters,

and that's when
the whole thing went.

Otherwise our meat
would've been ripped down
with it.

That's crazy.

[steven] because of that wind,
big chunk of it just fell.

So, it's, um,

something we gotta
repair tomorrow.

Luckily, we didn't lose
any meat.

Crazy. Nothing's easy
out here, man.

[ej] all right,
it's early in the morning.

I'm getting my stuff together.

This is the big hunt.

I'm freaking excited.

I get a deer,

that meat can last me
several weeks at least.

Plus, as winter gets closer,
another hide would be great.

It means, clothing,
possibly some shoes.
It can mean so much.

So, I'm ready
to get after it.

[exhales]

wow, it's cold.

I got up
at the crack of dawn,

I wanted to be in position
before the sun came up.

The deer are quite active
early in the morning,

right before the sun comes up.

I'm gonna do what it takes
to put some food in my belly.

[owl hooting]

you hear that owl?

Wow, that's a good sign.

[whispering] all right.

This is a good spot.

Now we wait.

[owl hooting]

[distant animal calls]

I can already hear the deer
calling each other

not too far away from here.

In about another
30 minutes,

it should be
little bit lighter.

Oh, this is gonna be good.

[deer calling]

[leaves rustling]

I hear a lot of moving
around.

Hopefully, we'll get something
in our sight real soon.

[leaves rustling]

[steven] how crazy was that
freaking avalanche last night.

[jeff] yeah,
half our wall collapsed.

Last night the wind picks up

and then all of a sudden
the entire back wall

of our fireplace
just collapses.

It was crazy
how much chillier it got

-with that
little skylight, man.
-I know.

We're gonna have to put
some repairs together today
and get that sealed back up.

[steven speaking]

nothing like
a little alligator
in the morning.

Yeah.

[steven] having all this meat
changes everything out here.

It gives us enough energy
to work on things
we have to do.

We have to work
on our shelter.

With that glue
I could put it back together.

[jeff] yeah, mmm-hmm.

-Have you tried to pick up
that big *bleep* yet?
-No, but...

-I think it's doable.
-Yeah, just give it
just a little...

Just give a little tester.

[steven] our fireplace,
literally, collapsed
behind itself.

It's, like, our main
heat refractor
and our shelter.

It's a bummer.
Um, it's something
we gotta take care of.

And something we gotta
take care of quick

because without it
we're losing a lot of heat.

[jeff grunts]
it's gonna be difficult.

[steven laughing]
yeah, yeah.

We have to figure out
the best way to put it
back together.

So I think we can
drive in a bunch of
green sticks at an angle

-and create, like,
a wood wall.
-[jeff] yeah.

[steven] we're gonna add some
more reinforcement

with some green
thicker sticks,

so it acts almost
like an insulated wall.

Once we build a strong
lattice framework
to cover the hole,

we'll pile as much palm
and leaves as we can

to, basically, make
a giant debris hut.

Pile time, baby.

-[amber] it was cold
last night.
-Yeah.

-[amber] that was freezing.
-Freezing.

[amber] that was something
I've never experienced
before in my life.

-And I've been cold
before, but, whoa.
-Yeah, last--

[amber] that was, like,
30, maybe 40 degrees breeze.

-I'm like, "ooh, ooh, ooh."
-yeah.

I would not ever
wish that on anybody.

-[gary] yeah, that was frigid.
-[max] yeah.

Right now my biggest concern
is the weather.

We're getting
a freezing cold breeze
every night from the north,

which means winter's here.

[softly] oh, my god,
my feet hurt so bad.

I can't even feel my feet
at the end of the night.

I'm barely moving
my calves and my toes,

right when I wake up
I have no blood flow to them

because
they're frozen.

It hurts a lot.

Frozen cold like this,

it gives me flashbacks
of military training,

cold weather training.

Just have
to endure the pain

and stay positive
and not let it get to me.

Okay.

Let's get a fishie fishie.

It's stuck on a log,
I gotta get in the water
and get it.

Oh... Oh, that's so cold.

That's so cold.

Oof.

[gary] how's that
looking, amber?

[amber] these two lines
are crossed here.

I'm trying
to get it untangled.

It's really
tangled around this

-log.
-Ooh, it's just cold,
isn't it?

Yeah, little bit.

[gary] we're going
from fall to winter.

So the river
gets colder, and colder.

And colder.

[amber] looks like
you're playing
with your dingie.

[gary] I'm trying
to get this hooked,

but I don't know
how to get it

-because it's got
a *bleep* fish on it, amber!
-Ahh! *bleep*

oh, my god!
What the *bleep*.

-I knew it.
-[laughs]

whoo!

-It's a big one.
-[max] nice.

-[amber] oh, my god,
he's so beautiful.
-Nice.

-[amber laughs]
-way to go, amber and gary.

*bleep* yeah.

Looking good,
looking good.

We're having catfish, boys.

When it comes to fishing
and feeding the team,

amber has been
providing all the fish.

[amber whoops] this is
a good meal right there.

Great calories
and just get it done.

[gary] man, we're just
kicking ass.

I mean, that's all we do.

[amber] I'm gonna go
re-bait my pole
one more time.

I want us to keep going
and thriving like we're doing.

Two in one day
would be amazing.

[ej] that's my view.
That's my first shot
laying right there.

And there's
my other laying.

Been out here
almost two hours, I think.

Not hear any more
movement right now.

Or calls.

*bleep*

not good.

Window's closing there.

So cold now.
The bottom of my feet
are actually freezing.

So I'm packing in
and head back to camp.

You know, I want
to stay out hunting,

but I can't afford
to have my two feet

that get me from point a
to point b around here,

and will get me
out of here,

you know,
I can't afford them
getting anymore damaged

than what
they already had.

So I had to pack it in.

[squirrel chirping]

[softly]
I just heard a squirrel
so I'm pulling it out

for the squirrel
right now.

There he is,
there he is.

Damn it.

That close.

It's hard
to get these little guys,

'cause they're small,
they're jumping around

from limb to limb.

But I did have an opportunity
to get one shot off,

and I swear,
I just barely missed him.

[grunts]

this is the first day
since I've been out here,

my stomach's actually
starting to talk to me.

Just feel a little empty,

'cause it is empty.
[chuckles]

and I am hungry.

Just really gotta
get after it now.

'cause it's just me now.

So no one's gonna
look after me but me.

[birds chirping]

so what
are you guys thinking?

Get to maybe
start the day

with trying to fish with
some rod or something there?

[ryan] yeah.

I cooked over an open fire,

was absolutely
one of the greatest meals
I've ever had.

But with a cold spell
like this,

it's time to hunt,
time to fish.

And time to really get
those extra calories

that we need out here.

Hey, guys, it's a deer.

I think I hit it.

It sounded like it hit good.

I thought I saw
the arrow go through
all the wicket.

Look like
it was passed through

which means
good chance
it was, like, good rib shot.

I stepped outside the shelter

and I saw
the deer take off

right over here,
beyond that

palm frond tree
and then it stopped.

So there's a good chance

that it's just bedded down
over there

quiet, waiting,
just waiting to hear

if there's anything
coming after it.

If that deer is out there,
we will find it.

*bleep* 'cause we go
get this thing,

we come back,
we all *bleep* deer head.

That deer will be
our next meal.

[whispers] it's moving
across the channel.

It could be shot in here.

Deer came in right here
down this trail.

Right here.
There's a track right here.

'cause he came
right through here.

Right here.

[ryan] look right
here, guys.

You can see
her track right there.

This direction here
she went,

so look for something
red, shiny,

-look for...
-[ryan] deep tracks.

...A deep track.

That deer is laying out
in the bush somewhere,

if all works out well,
we could stumble upon it,

but it's in some of
the thickest things
on the planet.

[rylie] there's blood
right here.

-[rylie] yeah, blood.
-[matt] oh, first spot
of blood.

[ryan] I think that's
the blood trail
right there.

[matt] you've blood
on this leaf,
you've blood on here.

[ryan] okay,
here's her tracks.

[matt] oh, this is
a good sign.

We're on the right trail
right now.

Found blood,
now we're in that mode,

where that deer
has tried to hide itself.

I'm feeling confident
that she's here somewhere.

We just have to find her.

Fingers crossed.

Needle in a haystack.

Was my line moving again?

[max] oh, if we double up,
that will be something else.

Let me go check it.
Gary, how does the line look?

Is it tight?

I was sure we got it, girl.

[amber whoops] I'm so happy!

-[gary laughs]
-pow!

And that's how
it's done out here.

I haven't even finished
cooking this one yet,

-and she caught another one.
-[laughs]

what?

[max] amber's always
putting those lines in,

she... Every single day
she's doing the work

that needs to be done,
in order to try to feed us.

You're crushing it.

To see her crush it is,
you know, round of applause.

That's the whole
team winning.

On a challenge like this,
she just keep catching fishes

-a bit of show off.
-[amber laughing]

well, this is yours, girl.

-[amber] yeah, right here!
-[gary] is it a four-pounder?

Cheers to the man
berry marsh.

-[gary] yeah.
-[max] thank you very much...

-[gary] yeah...
-...For another catch.

I feel like I'm slacking.

[gary] amber the angler.

[amber] I just like
feeding you guys.

You guys are like my brothers.

I am a fisher woman.

Boys are super happy,

and proud of me, and they're
my best fans out here,

so I look forward to providing
for them every day.

And sixty days
will go like that.

[max] thank you, amber.

[amber]
you're welcome, love.

Always for the family.

Ee-haw!

Girl's raking it in.

[thunder rumbling]

[gary] thunder.

[amber] the storm is coming.

[thunder rumbling]

[steven] there are lots
of scary noises
on these challenges,

but thunder always gets me.

Yeah, skies are looking
pretty ominous, huh?

[steven] yeah.

-[steven] oh. Scare factor.
-[jeff] sure.

-[steven] let's kick ass, huh?
-Yeah, let's get
this done today.

[jeff] survival
is never easy.

We're not
gonna get a break.

We have to repair
this giant hole
in our shelter,

and add a little bit more
waterproofing material,

for the top of our roof.

We can feel
that cold, crisp air of winter

starting to set in.

And there is nothing
more painful and torturous,

than a cold winter rain

while you're naked and hungry
out in the wild.

[steven] this stuff
is gonna work great, man.

The grass, it's a lot
thicker than it even looks.

Let me grab a bunch of this
kind of stuff first, though.

We'll do the palm fronds last.

[jeff] we're doing
three main layers
of our shelter.

Layer one is gonna be
all the cut down grasses.

This is thick, heavy,
dense material

that will keep the water
and the moisture out,

while also retaining
heat inside the shelter.

Then we're gonna
put on the willows

and the palms.

And these two layers
are gonna be critical

in preventing water
from getting into
this shelter.

This is gonna be
the rain buffer
of our room.

[steven] exhausting.

This is something
that has to be done.

We can't keep risking

having a torrential downpour
and us getting wet and tired,

and losing our fire.

If we get in that position,
hypothermia's a real thing.

[thunder rumbling]

I'm thinking we better hurry.

[thunder rumbling]

[grunts]

[thunder rumbling]

this rain here, I know
I'm on a short timeline.

Doesn't take long for you
to go into hypothermia,

even in
temperate conditions,

like I found out
in the amazon,

which was
completely temperate.

That's the closest
I've ever been to
hypothermia in my life.

[thunder rumbling]

it's gonna be cold and wet,

and windy and rainy,

so I've been
piling up firewood

as much as I can.

[grunts]

[exhales]

the part about being alone,
that sucks.

That's a task and a chore
I didn't mind doing when
there were others,

to also help with it.

Now, it's on me by myself.

Can't afford to get sick.

Right. Go.

All right.

Now the preparation
task done,

good to go.

-Some firewood to boot.
-[thunder rumbling]

[thunder rumbling]

[rain pattering]

-[matt] we got rain coming.
-[rylie] gosh, *bleep*
we gotta keep moving.

[ryan] that little bit
of drizzle,

is gonna make this blood
wash off these leaves

that were already wet.

And that is tough.

[matt] any luck over there?

-[ryan] no.
-[matt] it was gonna be
almost impossible

to follow a track
in that stuff.

I feel she could be down
literally anywhere

below our feet.

Come on, deer,
where'd you go?

I want to head back.

It's getting a little much.

[jeff] well, the skies
have officially
opened up right now.

That's pretty damn good.

[thunder crashing]

[jeff] pretty dry and cozy.

Not a single drop of water

has fallen
on that fire right now.

[steven]
it's a long day, man.

-This takes a lot out of you.
-Long day.

-Oh, dude.
-There's nothing
you can do about it.

I know, I was kind of...

Soaking the suck.

Sometimes there's only
so much suck you can
soak in for a day.

Yeah.

[thunder rumbling]

[matt] our blood trail
has been washed out
by the rain.

It is one of the thickest
places on earth.

And you can
hide a car in here, so...

From here,
she could be anywhere

from ten feet to 50 feet

and you wouldn't
be able to see her.

Mmm-hmm.

[rylie]
see anything to your left?

[matt] with all this
brush around, ugh...

Oh, you think?

We've been looking
for a while now,

couple of hours,
a few hours.

We might have to come back
when the weather clears.

With this much rain
and the colder temperatures

we just physically
can't stay out there.

It's naked people
all day and look for it.

I'm starting to get cold.

We're going back,
we're trying to keep positive.

But it felt like we should be
hanging up here right now, so.

Agonizing day.

We gotta fix that roof.

It looks like our mud roof,

uh, isn't as water tight
as anticipated.

[amber] I'm getting hit.

I was really happy
that our ground
was all nice and dry.

-Right. No mud.
-Yeah.

My toes are swollen again.

Are they still blue?

I don't know,
this just keeps happening.

About as much as I could
bend my toes
though, right there.

It's the test, you know.
We just gotta...

-Get through it.
-Feel the rain,
feel the pain.

And, uh,
keep pushing.

[crickets chirping]

well, looks like
the rain has stopped
at the moment.

It may rain
throughout the night,

I don't know.

May just have to put
a few pieces
of firewood there,

just keep it going.

I'm tending the fire here
all by myself

and it sucks.

Man, the past few days
I've been so frustrated

I've been
getting real short,

kind of, angry, I think,
a lot with myself

and with the way
the situation's
been going lately.

I need to get a deer
or something to eat.

Something in my belly,
and that sucks.

Once you let
frustration settle in,

you get flustered,
that's when

you can make mistakes
in survival situations,

so I'm not gonna
let that happen to me.

[fire blazing]

[fire crackling]

oh, *bleep*

just dump some water on it.

Woke up just in time.
Almost had a bit of a disaster
in the shelter here.

Look at this.

Back wall here
where this log is
kinda caught fire.

Right there. Definitely got
to do something about this
fire situation in here.

Was so focused on hunting,
I put that on the back burner.

So, that's what happens
when you're alone.

[exclaims]

survival, you got to be
on your toes all the time.

Another gator in the sun
on the log over here.

Got up early, I didn't
sleep well the night before.

A part of our shelter
tried to catch on fire.

All I want was drinking water,
refill my pot and put it
on the fire.

Son of a bitch.

My fire was out.

[sighs]

not a coal to be seen.

Argh.

Normally, if I had a partner,
fire would be going
and there'd be water waiting.

It's really starting to hit me

that I'm absolutely,
completely alone out here
in the swamp,

having to do this.

So I'm working with
very damp materials

so I'm a little flustered
at the moment.

Trying not to be
but the tinder bundles
are kinda damp from the rain.

*bleep*
really *bleep* suck.

[exhales]

this swamp
is driving me crazy.

You go down here,
check the gator line.

Yeah, the water levels are up,
much higher.

That's no joke, there.

Wow.

With all this water,
it's gonna push
a lot more fish in here

and a lot more animals
should be on the move,
if we're lucky.

Even in this colder weather?

Yeah.

So, yesterday, we hit it
pretty hard out there.

Trying to find dead deer,
in the rain,

unable to track it,

unable to even find
a track on the ground,
was how hard it rained.

And it was a lot of walking,
so we have to recoup today,

do a little passive fishing.

You know, it's a marathon.
It's a long journey.

And to make it
to the end of this,

we have to try to
get to get food
every step of the way.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

[matt] water moccasin,
right up here. See it?

[rylie] yeah.

[ryan] back up, back up.
Back up.

Be very careful.
Those are super aggressive

and they like to lunge at you
and attack.

Matt spotted a decent
sized, big, coiled up,
black water moccasin.

Those things
are highly venomous.

[matt] if I can pin it.

[ryan] you want me to get
something else to pin it with?

-[matt] see if you can
chop it up.
-Set it up out there.

Gonna try to pin it.

[rylie] you put it in a trap.
You got it?

[matt] yep, yep.

Oh, here.

[matt] damn, rylie, get it.

[ryan] oh, first snake.

Oh, yeah.

That thing is gnarly.

Yeah.

Snake slayer, rylie.

Are you gonna drink
some blood?

[all laugh]

[matt laughs] I'm not sure
about that, brother.

Take it.
Take it like a warrior.

Oh, yeah.

You don't want a hit?

I guess.

[matt] that is salty.

Oh.

Not as irony
as most blood tastes,
but this is a reptile.

And surprisingly,
it was kinda tasty,
it was a nice new flavor.

Hey, watch the head.

Ooh.

-[exhales]
-careful, dude.

[rylie] that's why they
call it the cottonmouth

because of that white mouth
right there.

-[matt] he's ready to bite,
right now.
-[rylie] yeah.

-Damn.
-See that?

Seeing a water moccasin
as blended in,

in a well-travelled area
where we go

definitely was a sombering
reminder that

they're out here and we need
to be head on a swivel, 110%

doing the best we can
because we spotted it
before it could do anything,

but it's a very good chance
we could have just not seen it

and we would have walked
right into it.

There's his little heart
right here.

Look at it.

[rylie] still beating.
See that?

-Still beating heart of snake.
-Oh, yeah.

You're gonna eat that raw?

Do it. Do it.

Oh, yeah!

Who's a big deal now?

-I am.
-[exclaims]

wild woman.

I have killed
water moccasins before,

I have eaten snake before,
but I have never eaten
the beating heart.

It's just when
you're in a savage environment

doing savage things,
it just felt like
the right thing to do.

By the end of this,
we'll be completely feral.

You guys want to go
have lunch?

-[matt] yeah.
-[ryan] heck, yeah.

Alright then.

Looking forward to my feet
to stop swelling in my leg.

Hurts so bad.

I'm just tightening up
our shelter

so that we don't have
to worry about any
of the rain coming in.

Essentially, you lose
50% of your body heat
once you get wet and cold.

And that is...
That's no bueno.

So that's why we really
have to focus on the shelter

because if we could be able to
stay warm, stay dry,

that eliminates one factor
that we won't have to
worry about.

Amber, how are you
feeling now?

I think I'm fine.
I just can't feel my toes.

Like, I give you a kick.
This is all I got.

-[gary] no way.
-[amber] that's it.

Are you serious?

Since this morning.
I didn't want to complain
to you guys.

Come on.

I just... I feel
a lot of pressure in my calf.

[gary] yeah, that pressure
in your calf bothers me.

[amber] bugs me. So, this is
currently my foot situation.

Why would that happen to you?
What happened in your past
that caused it?

I got blown up in iraq
on my second combat tour

and damaged my left iliac vein
where I had to have
a stent emplacement.

-[gary] in your left leg?
-Mmm-hmm.

I'm trying to stay positive
and I don't want to think
about it,

I just want to get out there
and fish,

do what we need to do here
and just get through
to day 60.

If I can get through combat,
I can get through this.

[narrator] concerned about
the loss of feeling
in amber's toes

producers bring in the medic
to evaluate her condition.

[producer] hey. Hi, amber.

I definitely want the medic
to take a look at you.

This is just a routine
medical checkup.

Oh... Okay.

I've had four blood clots,
three dvts and then a clot
in my left iliac...

[coco] yeah.
What exactly happened?

I had an explosion, an ied
had flipped my humvee over
and crushed my left side.

-[coco] where were your dvts?
-Uh...

Calf, knee, thigh
and left iliac.

Dvt is deep vein thrombosis
which is essentially
a blood clot

that forms most commonly
in the leg in a deep vein.

This could be significant.

Look at max. Close your eyes.

Which toe am I touching?

I don't know.

[coco]
that's a little concerning.

I might have to consult
our medical director.

[amber] what? I'm not...
I don't wanna go here.

[coco] but, amber, you barely
have sensation in your toes.

I mean, stent isn't really
something we can deal with
in the field.

Hey, she's gonna be fine.

Yeah. I don't think the boys
are gonna let you take me
out of here.

I don't think so.

I'm just gonna make
a quick phone call.

[phone line ringing]

[max] you gotta stay here.
We need you.

[all exclaiming]

[ryan] moccasin.

[matt] oh, my gosh.

[grunts]

[narrator] throughout
the ultimate legends challenge

each team's status
will be evaluated

using the xls
or xl success metric,

which calculates
their likely percentage
of completing

the 60 days together
as a team.

Three weeks
into the challenge...

Mondo the monster
alligator. We got him.

Jeff and stevens' gator kill
has provided
a bounty of protein.

[coughs and laughs]
freaking wonderful.

I'm choking
on the smoked flavor
of our meat.

[narrator]
but another winter storm

has them back
on their heels again.

We are now shifting
from an offensive posture

to a defensive posture.

[grunts]

*bleep*

as a result, their xls
drops from 63 to 51%.

Whoa!

After eight days
without a partner...

Yeah! I'm eating tonight!

[narrator]
...Ej's efforts have yielded
a string of small successes.

Lone wolf strikes again.

[narrator]
but the challenges of battling
the swamp alone

are starting to mount.

*bleep*

his chance of reaching day 60
drops from 29 to 21%.

[cheering]

-good day!
-Good day!

Thanks to ryan's
nutria snare...

-We're from the nutria itch
to *bleep* nutria rich.
-Whoo!

[narrator] ...And rylie's
quick actions...

Oh, yeah!
Snake slayer, rylie.

[narrator]
...A taste of success...

Are you gonna
drink some blood?

[narrator] ...Has returned
to team savage.

-Who's a big deal, now?
-[exclaims]

[narrator] their team xls
rises from 42 to 60%.

Through a series of
cold nights and close calls...

[amber exclaims]

*bleep*

...Amber's ability to provide
has been a constant.

-[amber laughs]
-way to go, amber.

But now an injury
from her past...

I had an explosion,
flipped my humvee over
and crushed my left side.

[coco] this could
be significant.

[narrator]
...Threatens to remove her
from the challenge.

[coco] which toe
am I touching?

I don't know.

[narrator]
for now, their team xls
drops from 67 to 56%.

[phone line ringing]

[max] you gotta stay here.
We need you.

[amber] I just
really don't want
to go, no matter what.

[constantin] hi, amber.

Come on out.
I got to talk to you
for a few moments, okay?

[amber] what's up?

[constantin]
hey. This is a tough show.
We all know

it's about living in peril.
We get that.

However, your life
and your health

is still our
number one priority,

I can't say that enough.

It is not easy for me
or for coco--

I'm not leaving, right?

[constantin] I'm gonna have
coco explain the situation
to you,

so that you have
all the facts.

I'm really, really concerned
about your leg.

You have a significant
history of dvt.

You're showing some
pretty classical signs.

It's just, you know, the way
your vessels are dilating

and constricting with these
extreme temperature changes.

I know how much
you want to stay.

I got a second
and third opinion.

And we don't wanna
wait until--

not even till tomorrow?

We don't want to wait
until your foot becomes purple
or you develop pain

'cause by then you might have
a pulmonary embolism

and it can go downhill
really fast.

I know it sucks.

But if it does travel
and become
a pulmonary embolism,

you could tank faster
than we can get you
to a facility.

And you could die.

[exhales]

[cries]

so, I'm sorry.
I have to medically tap you.

You need to really
be evaluated at a facility.

[amber crying]

[amber] I'm so sorry, guys.

Oh, we're sorry.

Don't be sorry.

It's all good.

[gary] it's heartbreaking.
I do not want to see amber go.

She made it 23 days out here,

23 days of kicking ass
and feeding me and max.

We're losing our girl.

[amber sobbing]

it breaks my heart.

Makes me wanna cry.

You've been such an mvp,
*bleep* slaying gators,

freaking feeding us catfish.

Amber's such an integral
part of our team

and it's so unfortunate
that she's not gonna be here
to thrive with us.

Thank you for everything.

-Yeah.
You inspired me big time.
-Thank you, guys.

[amber] I appreciate you guys,
so much.

[max] amber's wonderful
and I'm truly gonna miss her,

it just doesn't even
feel real right now.

And it's just not gonna be
the same without her.

We love her, she's part of
the family, you know.

And gary and I have really
depended on her

and her ability to be
a positive force,
driving our team forward.

We really need her here.

She was just a wealth
of knowledge,

a wealth of energy,
a wealth of good vibes.

She was wonderful.

-[max] bye, amber!
-[gary] bye, amber!

We love you.

I love you guys!

[max] love you, too, amber.

[gary] we love you.

[laughs]

love you!

[amber] looking at my brothers
say goodbye to me just now
really hurt me.

I don't wanna leave.

[exhales sharply]

it just hurts. I know
I'm gonna worry about them
every night.

I'm like a mama bear to them,
of course I'm gonna worry.

We're supposed to
do this together.

I just wanna go back
to the shelter

and just go back
to our normal routine

and do the same thing
and just kick butt with them

'cause that's who we are.

We're team man berry.

Team man berry loves you!

[whooping]

I just want this experience
with them.

[sniffles]

hurts my heart
to leave right now.

[max] oh, man.

[gary] it's me
and you now, buddy.

[max] just me
and you, brother.

[gary] this just sucks.

[max] yeah.
