Desperate for food, Gwen and Sarah lead the charge to build a crossbow in the bush while Ryan feels the pressure. And, a fire pushes Bulent to the edge.

25 days into the 40-day
banishment challenge,

a deadly heat wave
reached its peak...

This extreme so far
is the worst it's been.

Gwen: Feels like
it's record-breaking heat.

Narrator: ...Stifling
bulent's search for protein...

Bulent: It is
hot as hell already.

...While wes' third
big-game kill

brought a huge win
to the team of six.

I'm really, really happy
that I can do that for the team.

Narrator: But in the sweltering
conditions...



I ain't feeling very good.

and wes' medical issues...

Sarah: It's a really
unfortunate loss.

Very windy.

Oddly enough...
I hate to use this word,

but it's rather cool today
in africa.

And it feels like
the temperature's

almost half of what it was.

We're loading everybody up both
sides with firewood tonight.

That's what I figured, yeah.

Just have them strap it
as much as possible.

And then getting
both the roofs metered out,

'cause we're gonna get rain
at some point.

Sarah: So, the weather
up until now

has been ridiculously hot.

It's finally at a temperature
that we can manage.

And even though we've lost wes,

we're all sort of
struggling right now.

We're coming up on the last leg
of this challenge.

We need to get some work done
and keep the mental game sharp.

Most important element
of survival

is just mental fortitude.

You've got to have the right
headspace to be out here

or you're not gonna make it.

Suzanne: Four pieces a day?
Is that what you were saying?

- Yep.
- Yeah.

Gwen: Honor system.

Right now, the amount of food
that we have left,

we're rationing out
at four pieces of jerky

a day per person.

So I think we might have
maybe six more days left

with what we have in there.

See all these animals

They're all following that game
trail down to your...

Jon: Ryan is a skilled hunter.

He's been with me since day one,

and he provided food every
single day at the other camp.

I got a large woodpecker
I just shot with my bow.

freshwater clam.
This is survival, bitches.

But he's been having a hard time
since we got to this camp,

and I think he's getting
a little down

that he hasn't gotten a kill
since we got here.

Ryan: Now that wes is gone,

it is a lot of weight on my
shoulder, to do all the hunting.

I've bowhunted my whole life,

but I haven't had a big kill
out here yet.

It's frustrating.

I just got to keep driving
as much as I can,

make sure everybody gets fed.

That's kind of my job out here,

and I'm trying
the best I can to provide.

Want to sit down,
get comfortable.

Stay still.

My hunting strategy is waiting
for the duikers to come down.

And they do, like clockwork,
every day.

We need this.

Today started with
a very cold morning

after one of the highest
temperatures I've seen,

comes this cold.

This place is
super unpredictable.

Off I go.

I've been alone for 18 days...

The way I like it.

Being solo
in a survival situation

really pushes you to the limit.

Physically, I am drained,

but I will push myself
until the point that says,

"you know what?
I'm about to break. That's it."

but that point is not here yet.

Mentally, I'm still 100% there.

Oh, look at this beautiful...

How are you doing there, bubba?

What's your name?

Ricardo.

Or, shortly... rich.

I picked "ricardo"

because mondays
he might be ricardo,

Tuesday he might be
richie, barehanded killer.

And Saturday, if he's not
behaving, we'll call him dick.

So he's a perfect member
for the boma.

Being alone in this really rough
environment can be challenging,

but I have no interest
in joining other people.

Besides, now I have this guy.

Richard.

Mm.

That makes me smile.

Time to hunt.

africa gives you an opportunity,

you do everything you can
on your part,

but it finds a way
to take it from you.

It's just frustrating.

It would be great if we could
have two hunters out there.

It doesn't do any good to have
all of us sitting here

when somebody here is capable
of sitting down there to hunt.

Sarah: We need to be able
to help ryan in hunting.

Somebody needs to be able
to go out there and assist

in gaining meat for the team.

Gwen: Does anybody feel
strong enough

to pull back that 45-pound bow?

I can't, 'cause of my shoulder
being destroyed.

This is just ridiculously
way too big for me.

Gwen: Other than ryan,
none of us have

any hunting experience
with a bow.

So we got to figure out
a different game plan.

I have this idea for a crossbow

using the longbow that we have,

by taking a stock of wood,

mounting it across a "y"
in the front,

being able to pull it back
into a crossbow.

Do you see this tree
right in front of us here

that's been cut
and it's got the "y"?

We can cut that out for a stock.

- Okay, yeah.
- That'd be awesome.

If we had a backup
that everybody could shoot,

you guys can maybe hunt
and bring in some meat.

That would be the way to do it.

I'll go grab that piece.

this is the piece of wood

we're thinking about
making the crossbow out of.

Other than ryan,
none of us have any efficiency

making a kill
with one of those bows.

So we are trying to make
a weapon that everybody can use

and everybody can go
try and hunt with.

I will get a big game.

That is one of my goals.

This is a perfect time to hunt

because everything is peaceful.

I'm watching animals,

trying to be quiet as I can.

I've never seen
those birds before.

The beginning of spring

brings over 185 species of birds
to south africa

to mate and lay eggs,

some traveling from as far
as antarctica.

Bulent: These annoying ducks.

They don't shut up.
They scare the animals around

and they make it impossible
to hunt.

I would try and shoot one,

but they're too far away.

Waiting on little
hard-to-kill bastards.

When the sun goes down

and you start hearing
the animals run here in africa

and sounding off, it worries me.

I get nervous, I get scared,
because as a hunter,

I'm also competing
with other hunters out here...

You know, lions,
hyenas, leopards.

They're after
the same game I am,

and just as hungry
as I am, so...

It's some nerve-racking times.

Oh, man.

Alright, well,
at least you tried.

Suzanne: You look like
you need to sit.

I want to get a piece

Suzanne: Oh, is that

It's got fuzz growing out of it.

Oh, my gosh.

That's all there is
to eat right now.

respiratory issues

to essentially
just full-system shutdown.

And that's the type of stuff
that in certain circumstances

can be life threatening.

Gwen: It must have
gotten wet somehow.

Oh, man. In the bottom
of this bag is all damp.

Yep.

All this contact-contaminated
at that point.

Holy crap.

That is not something that
I want to [bleep] around with.

I'm not eating mold.

I'd rather go without food
than eat mold

and risk problems
with your brain or whatever.

It's not worth the risk.

- This has all got to go.
- Yeah, give me that.

Jon: I'm gonna dump it, alright?

- That's not good news.

Gwen: Now, with this loss
of our food,

we have to find
another food source.

It's better
a leopard comes over here

than over there
at the boma with us, you know.

Suzanne: Losing the jerky

definitely puts
more pressure on us

to get a kill
for these last couple of weeks.

It's important
to finish the crossbow.

We mount this in here.

But then all this bark's
coming off.

Yeah.

Ryan: It's unforgiving
here in africa.

I keep having to tell myself,
"you can get through this.

You can get through this."

just got to suck it up
and just deal with it.

it's almost dark.

If you're trying to kill things,

'cause you don't become
a barehanded killer

by sitting on your ass,

you know the darkness means
all the predators are out.

Guess what... I'm one of them.

I've got me a rock.

I don't know
if we'll be able to get it,

but we'll give it a shot.

He's chowing down on jerky
across from our the boma,

making a lot of racket tonight.

just had to chuck a rock
at a hyena.

Got pretty close
to the entrance of the boma.

Do you want to take
a look at it?

Well, all of us
are gonna have problems

pulling back a 45-pound bow,

so this crossbow allows
every single person,

whether they're feeling
strong enough or not.

You release
the trigger mechanism,

and it fires the weapon.

Looks fairly level.

Narrator: Once the y-shaped
tree branch is level,

a bow will be secured
across the top

so it can be drawn down
and held in place

by a triggering mechanism.

Are we gonna leave
this handle on here?

- I kind of like it.
- Yeah?

So, what I'm doing right now

is I am fleshing
this impala hide.

I'm hoping to use this hide

to make the strap
for the crossbow,

and whatever's left,
we can use to make shoes.

We're coming up on the last leg
of this challenge.

And walking out of here,

we're definitely
gonna need shoes.

Back home, I do work
as a taxidermist,

and it's something I can utilize

to contribute
to the rest of the team.

And I would like to hopefully
get everybody a pair

before extraction.

By removing
all of the extra bits,

the easier it's gonna be
to work with.

Oh, that's... That'll work.

Gwen: Pretty big kudu
up on that ridge right now,

coming down the ridge.

Where's ryan?

Jon: I think he's sleeping.

Ryan has been lethargic,
laying around the boma.

We all noticed that he's not got
much activity in his eyes.

He's got kind of a dull look
to his eyes.

If we can get him in that blind,

hopefully his attitude changes
and he gets on the upswing.

Suzanne: Hey.

[ groans ]

I ain't got a choice, really.

Just getting tired of it.

Kind of want to get
this [bleep] over with.

Don't do no good.

Gwen: Ryan's a hunter.
That's why he's here.

He came here to hunt.

I hope that he pulls himself
out of it and steps up.

this entire adventure

has made me hate
big-game hunting.

Just having to, and having
to try to rely upon it,

and have to [bleep] do it
every day...

Has made me hate it.

Literally, when I go home,
I'll probably never go again.

It made it feel like a job.

much of sleep at all.

There's so much nutrients
my body's missing.

Even though mentally
I'm perfectly fine,

it's gonna take a toll
on me eventually.

dead valley.

It's hard to find anything
living in this place.

He didn't make it
for some reason.

has enough meat for bait.

So whatever I catch, we eat.

That's the whole idea.

Just tired of dealing with it.

It's just physically
and mentally exhausting.

all interest in it.

Jon: Ryan's state of mind,

it affects the survival
of the whole group.

If someone's just checked out,
it's stressful to everybody,

and ryan's basically
just stopped trying.

He doesn't want to hunt anymore,

and that's not the way
it works out here.

You can't do that. You have to
be there for your team.

He needs to get
his head on straight,

'cause banishment
is always an option.

my brother out here.

We're bonded through suffering.

And you can tell
he's in bad shape.

I don't want to banish him.

He's part of the family.

So we'll see what happens
over the next couple days.

But I hope everything
works itself out.

Suzanne: How do you feel?

Ryan: I'm not having
a very good day at all today.

It's been kind of depressing,

and I'm trying
to hold it together.

'cause that's just the sucky
part of the day, you know?

So, once we get this
lashed down,

I'll be lashed
onto this part here.

So, it's rawhide. It was wet.

When we put it on,
and it's drying,

so it's shrinking tight
to this thing.

Pull it tight
so that when it dries,

it's gonna be, like,
super, super solid tight.

Nice.

Cool.
And just let that start drying.

Gwen: Cut a notch in it.

Run a channel down it...
Bolt channel.

Be able to pull the string back.

And it will release
the arrow easily.

Sarah: Oh, my god, gwen.

God, this is [bleep] amazing.

This is actually the trigger.
So the bow draws back,

knocks into this spot
right here,

and then this part, when pulled,
releases that tension,

pushes it up,
shoots the arrow out.

Be one of the coolest things

that we've ever built
in the bush.

And when using a crossbow,
it's ready to fire.

I don't have to do anything
except release the trigger.

It's really wanting to go
sideways as I'm doing it.

Not quite where it needed to go.

The crossbow is so close
to being completed.

All we need to do now is work
on that trigger mechanism,

because I did not hit my target.

Oh, god. That's in there.

Just went way into the dirt.
- We'll get it.

Bulent: Good evening, richard.

I'm definitely hungry.

I'm gonna go check out
that line I left.

[ birds squawking ]

These doggone ducks.

They won't stop screaming.

There's nothing on the lines.

the way I look at survival is,

as long as your mental,
intestinal fortitude

is strong enough, you can push
through pretty much anything.

But these birds and ducks,

they keep going
and going and going.

And it's driving me crazy.

I don't know what to do.

Unless there's a bomb
that kills all of them,

they're not gonna go anywhere,

and I doubt I'll be able
to kill all of them.

we got about zero sleep.

The entire night long,
these ducks kept screaming,

and screaming and flying over.

They're loud.

God, they sound like

I make this place my kingdom,

but not every kingdom
is paradise.

This is not a place to thrive.

This is a place
maybe you can get by,

but eventually, it will eat you.

So I'm leaving
for a better, happier kindgom.

Last minutes in this damn place.
I can't wait to get out.

get closer to extraction.

makes me very nervous

because it's a sign
of major depression

and I'm really getting concerned
about his overall well-being.

And it is really a liability
to the tribe

when somebody
is off the mental game

and their mind
is not here in africa.

Suzanne: Last night,
I saw you sleepwalking.

And I looked up,
and you were so wobbly,

I was like... 'cause I was...

I was not gonna be able
to catch you.

And you would have fallen
and hit your head

on both the logs
and the fire pit,

like at the same time.

And that's why I was like,

Yeah. Sarah: Want to make sure

that that's something
that does not become worse

the longer that we're out here.

'cause something like that can
really mess you up,

you know, if you fall
into the fire,

you fall into a log.

There's not a spot to fall
that you wouldn't get hurt.

I'm just glad that
we all have maydays left.

This has been terrible.

Spent 30 years of my life
doing paramedicine,

firefighting, law enforcement.

My whole career,
I've been trained

to recognize traumas, injuries,

bad emotional things
that have happened to people.

Ryan's in a pretty fragile
mental state right now.

He's spiraling downward.

on the challenge

is weighing on him

so deeply in an emotional sense

that being able to just
hold him and comfort him

might just give him
the boost that he needs.

But it's getting
harder and harder.

you're doing?

I'm like... I don't know.

I have no desire to do anything.

What we're concerned about is...

And with the amount of weight
you've lost

and what's the amount of food
you're not eating,

with the amount of rest
you're not getting,

with the amount of hydration
you're not getting...

We're not equipped
to handle depression...

...In a situation like this.

For your safety
more than anything else,

we don't want to leave you
in an environment like this.

It's taking its toll.

So we know you would never
quit this on your own,

because you're tough as hell.

But we think
the best thing for you

is to pull you
from the challenge.

is not the same ryan that I knew

when he first walked
into this challenge.

And seeing that was a really
difficult thing for me,

but we know it was
the right thing to do.

Mental health is just as real
as physical health,

and it's something that needs
to be taken into consideration

in a survival scenario.

and we're still losing people.

There's no words to really
explain it or why it hit.

That's just the world
of depression... things happen.

there is a stigma
associated with it,

far as people looking down like,
"oh, he's crazy."

it's not crazy, you're just born
without the chemical production.

There's no shame at all

in going and getting treatment.

I start to see greenery
on top of the trees,

so I must be getting closer
to a water source.

I am getting tired.

I'm hoping
this thing is very close.

to put this crossbow to use.

The fact that we were able
