But Lacey's impulsiveness
almost led to disaster.

Narrator: A mixed-gender
team of Melanie, Sarah, and duck
set up camp in the sun-scorched
desolation of pitsi flats...
My damn feet are smokin'.
...where the terrain took
an immediate toll on Melanie.
I feel like [bleep] and it's
all because of my sunburn.
Duck: Early in the stage,
losing a partner would
not be good at all.
Look at all the fish
jumping. You see them all?
The all-female team of
Melissa, kaila, and Lindsey
have found a viable source
of catfish at the noja cliffs...
[ Groans ]
Narrator: ...But not
a means to secure it.
Lindsey: It's very frustrating.
[ Both howling ]
Narrator: And at shosho ravine,
the discovery of a recent kill
provided the all-male team
of Trent, Jeremy, and Gary
with their first meal.
Gary: We get lunch today.
Narrator: But the decision
to leave fresh meat
in their shelter put Gary
at odds with his teammates.
I'm completely
disagreeing with this.
If we have that meat in
here tonight, we're screwed.

Aah! Aah!
Gary: Hopefully we
make it through the night,
if we don't get eaten.
♪♪
Gary: Last night, I thought I
heard hyenas outside the boma.
That's why I really don't
want any meat inside my camp.
My partners are more
afraid of spoiled meat
than being attacked by hyenas.
So, yesterday, I stashed some
raw meat in the ground up here
to demonstrate that it
won't go bad overnight.
Also, to demonstrate
that it would be okay
to do it if we get another
kill again, in terms of safety.
Trust me, I know what I'm doing.
Now, I didn't put it
inside of anything.
I just buried raw meat in here.
It starts getting
cooler down here.
Preserved it.
Doesn't smell bad at all.

Looks like someone's
gonna have a little snack.

This is a debate I have
with people all the time.
They think meat
goes bad in a day.
I'll leave meat sitting on
my counter for a week,
eating off of it.
Especially after it's cooked.
Like, if it was me, I wouldn't
have even made jerky.
I'd have made nice steaks.

I dug up that meat
that I buried last night.
I'm gonna cook
it now and eat it.
Yeah. Jeremy: How's it smell?

view on survival out here.
Gary claims to leave meat
out for a week and eat on it
without it being
refrigerated or something,
and if it works for
him, that's great.
Maybe he's got a
stomach that can handle it.

And I go back to what
took him out of the 21-day.
He ate something that
he wasn't supposed to eat,
and it took him out.
And I don't want it to
take me out of my 40,
so that's why I'm careful
with everything I do out here.
[ Sniffs ]
Mmm.
That is delicious.

That meat is 100 times
better than the jerky,
and I don't think
we'll get sick from it.
I think you also have a
different gut than myself.

I mean, I like beef
jerky, don't get me wrong.
And I like deer meat back home,
but out here, my stomach
just kind of gets nauseated.
I have got to find me a good
food source and eat on it.

in their search for redemption.

have so much experience.
We're professionals out here.
And as a group, we came up
with like a call system, a language.
One call, ca-caw, means... Caw.
..."where are you?"
Two -- I won't do it
-- is for emergencies.
And three is,
"please come to me.
It's not an emergency,
but I need assistance."

so that I don't
step on prickers.

Clarence: I'm doing a
sweep when I come back.

The biggest lesson from
my previous "xl" challenge
in South Africa was,
death can come to
anyone at any point in time,
like a thief in the night.
Can't catch my breath.
I need a medic.
I'm very glad and grateful
that I have Shane and Lacey
and we're working
so well together.
Work together as a group,
that's how you're gonna survive.
Lacey and Shane are
willing to go the extra mile
to provide for me,
and I'm willing to do
the same for them.
When I finish Africa this
time, I'm gonna be standing tall.

like we got a groove.
Clarence: Yeah.
Lacey: My belly
hurts. I'm hungry.
Finding food is super important,
especially if we're gonna
keep working at the levels
that we're working now.
It would be amazing if we
could get some calories,
'cause I know tomorrow,
I am gonna be sluggish.
But I'm still gonna
just keep pushing.

at the noja cliffs,
Melissa, Lindsey, and kaila
continue to pursue
an elusive food source.

Lindsey: There's tons of
catfish in our water hole.
One would think that
that would be easy to get,
but actually, it's not.
The mud is slippery
and they are slippery.
Go up, go up, go up.
It's definitely frustrating,
but there's no way that
we are not gonna get one.
Dang it.
Like totally playing with me.

Melissa: In order to
survive the next 40 days,
we need to continually get food.
In my 21-day challenge, I
was given the opportunity
to stay another 20 days when
we lined up with the "xl" crew.
Oh, my gosh, there's
other naked people.
Man: If you want to hang out
with us and be a part of this group,
hey, kudos, come on in.
Unfortunately, I had family
issues back home, and I didn't.
But there's really no regrets
because I want to live and
breathe the challenge from the start.
I really want to showcase
more of my survival skills,
so I just want to
make it my mission
to go out and figure out
how we can get the
fish out of this hole.
I want to feed my team and
I want to get the food quick.
I just smelled
something really strong.
I smell that sour, vinegary
scent of rotten flesh.
And I'm thinking maybe we
can use it for bait for the catfish.
Oh, yeah.
There is something very dead.
A warthog.

It smells worse than anything
I've ever smelled in my life.
Like rotten egg
and rotting flesh.
These maggots have
been eating on this thing
for quite some time.

Okay.
What the [bleep] is that?
Wait until you
smell dead warthog.
That's awesome.
We can use it for bait.
Oh, my god, that
smells horrible.
Oh, hello, maggots.
We're hoping that
the catfish will come up
and try and eat those maggots,
maybe make them a
little easier for us to get to.
Oh, I'm gonna have
nightmares about that.

They probably hate warthog.
It just stinks that we have an
abundance of food right here
and we can't quite get it yet.
They're mocking us.

northwest at pitsi flats,
the intense African sun
continues to plague Melanie
and her teammates.
Melanie: Oh, god.
I feel like I'm in
direct sunlight.
Is there any sun on my body?
Sarah: Not a lot. Very
little. Duck: On your left arm.
[Bleep] Dude, my
legs are on fire.
I definitely have sun poisoning.

Melanie: I still feel
like complete [bleep]
It's just hard not
being capable...
Of being 100% every day.
I can't lay here all day.
Just for a couple
days, while you recover.
The worst thing that
could happen to us
is for you to have to go.
Duck: Yeah.
If that happens, we're
gonna lose much more
than just a couple
arms to carry firewood.
That's true.
Sarah: We haven't
had anything to eat.
I think the thing that would
help Melanie the most right now
is getting some food.
I wonder how long she's
going to be able to last
if she doesn't get the resources
she needs to heal her body.
Well, I'll try to
get us some meat.

So I was walking out
here to our water hole,
and I noticed a couple warthogs
hanging out on the far end.

I lost 'em. I just seen 'em.
They went behind
these termite mounds.

It's a fight out here
-- a fight for food.
Mel, she's fighting her best.
She's trying to heal.
Then there's no food to
eat to help that process.
I jut got to put that
spear in something.
Narrator: Armed with
razor-edged lower tusks,
warthogs are notorious
for slicing open the arteries
of would-be predators.
They even back into
their cramped Burrows
so they can confront
intruders tusk first.
The only way to get animals
is just get in there with 'em.
Desperate times call
for desperate measures.

it's been sitting around
for about three days.

This is gonna give
me lots of protein.

piece of this animal.
I've eaten the brain,
the tongue, the eyeball.

Finally got something
I can stomach.

Lacey: Where are we going?

I saw a dead impala while
I was hunting this morning.
Smells like a fresh kill.
There is potential
to get a meal from it.
And if not, it's gonna
be fantastic bait.
I see the carcass.
I am extremely
worried about crocodiles
in this particular location.
There's definitely two
crocs that we've seen
that are in this water.
And we're off.
Clarence: Yes, I could
get killed out here,
but I'm not gonna
give fear power.
I'm taking a risk to get it.
That's how you're gonna survive.
Shane: A lot of
animals get killed
down here by the crocs,
guys. Want to let you know that.
Yeah.
There's a lot of
bones in the water.
Clarence is wading

And I'm thinking, chances
are the croc is trying to bait us.

The fish jumped and moved,
so something spooked them.

we are getting frustrated.

That's the biggest thing
about having some experience
on an "xl" challenge, is
that we can feel the tension,
we know where
the breakdowns are,
and hopefully, we can be a
little patient with each other
when that happens.
You just need to trust
us a little more, Shane.

I do find a certain level of
potentially higher endurance
if I'm willing to eat
things that others won't,

survival situation.

Trying to aim my shots,
I find myself shaking a
little bit more than normal.
My legs were wobbling like hell,

just not as strong.

my hunting skills.
I mean, most predators in nature
are not all that successful,
percentage-wise.
But they're successful
because they keep at it.

At shosho ravine, the all-male
pack has scored multiple meals,
but Jeremy's weak stomach
poses a serious risk to their success,
lowering their starting
xlr from a 7.8 to a 7.4.
At the noja cliffs,
Melissa, Lindsey, and kaila
displayed teamwork
and determination
in finally securing
a bounty of catfish,
increasing their team
xlr from a 7.4 to a 7.9.
But at makubu gorge,

threatening the team's ability
to endure the harsh environment,
dropping their initial

At shosho ravine, the all-male
pack has scored multiple meals,
but Jeremy's weak stomach
poses a serious risk to their success,
lowering their starting
xlr from a 7.8 to a 7.4.
At the noja cliffs,
Melissa, Lindsey, and kaila
displayed teamwork
and determination
in finally securing
a bounty of catfish,
increasing their team
xlr from a 7.4 to a 7.9.
But at makubu gorge,
the confidence of
the redemption team
has been rocked by
Clarence's sudden turn.
With his ability
to continue at risk,
their score plummets
from an 8.5 to a 7.6.
