Stalked by lions, hyenas and aggressive crocodiles, 13 all-star survivalists try to survive for 40 days in Africa's sun-scorched Selati Basin. Resources are scarce and when one group scavenges meat, hungry predators stalk their camp.

Narrator: Deep in
the heart of Africa,
the lush selati river basin
sustains one of the world's
largest populations of wildlife.
But a merciless dry season
has devastated the savannas,
creating a fierce
competition for resources
and turning this cradle of life
into a 100-square-mile
killing zone.
Here, 12 "naked
and afraid" veterans
will put their
lives on the line...
-Lion!
-Something moved.
-Croc!
-[Bleep]
...to prove they can survive
these stark killing fields...
-We have dinner!

much I can take of this.
Narrator: In a land

And I am terrified of

I've never seen
Africa look so... Dead.
It's just, like, you know
there's a lot of carnivores.
There's a lot of
meat-eaters out here.
Trent: When I heard
the location Africa,
I went and put a will in place.
That's smart.
Sarah: This place
is creeping me out.
-Yeah.
-Kind of terrifying.
It is, a little bit. Little bit.
Narrator: Traveling deep
into the desolate terrain,
the survivalists deploy
north of the selati river,
scattered among the area's
diminishing water sources,
in four groups of three.
To the east, in the
shadows of the noja cliffs,
the determined all-female
trio of Melissa, kaila,
and Lindsey come together.
They'll search for safety
in a deadly high-grass area,
feared by local tribes
for its extremely aggressive
population of lions.
-Let's do it.

I'm an environmental
educator, and I love this stuff.
This is the type of
stuff that I live for.
But this is Africa, and this
place is a serious threat
if you are not on
your toes at all time.
Yikes.
Lindsey: There are lions around,
so I guarantee that
they see me right now,
even if I can't see them.

Narrator: 5 miles to
the west, at pitsi flats,
duck, Melanie, and Sarah
will occupy a barren scrub land
battered by blistering sun
and crawling with
Africa's deadliest snake,
the black mamba.
Duck: I live in west
Monroe, Louisiana.
Back home, you know,
I'm the predator
there, no doubt about it.
But out here, you know,
you kind of become the prey.
Only difference is, you naked.
After y'all.
Melanie: We're like
literally in [bleep]

Narrator: 3 miles
northwest at shosho ravine,
the all-male pack
of Jeremy, Gary,
and Trent combines
their diverse skills.
♪♪
Gary: So what do
you do? You hunt?
-You guys hunt?
-I hunt, man, I love to hunt.
-Do you hunt?
-I hunt as much as I can.
So, you guys are
the hunting boys?
-Oh, yeah. Man, you don't hunt?
-Not much. Barely.
Do you make sandwiches?
Yeah, I'll make some
hog sandwiches.

[ Laughter ]
Narrator: They'll inhabit
an area rich with wild game
but must compete
for it with leopards
and packs of vicious hyenas.
I think this is the place.
Trent: I love to hunt,
but I'm in Africa now.
The animals, they're
way better at it than me.
I'll start.
And if we don't make
the kill, it makes the kill.
That scares me to death.
Gary: Dude, keep
your eyes peeled.
-Yeah. For real.
-Real dangers out here.

Narrator: And
in the final group,
"naked and afraid xl" veterans
Clarence, Shane,
and Lacey return
after failing to complete
their initial 40-day challenge.
I'm hungry for redemption, guys.
-We got to finish.
-Yeah, we have to, man.
-We have to finish.
-Yeah, I want my bloody 40.
Yeah.
Narrator: They'll
pool their experience
at makubu gorge, a
treacherous rockscape
where crocodiles lay in wait
and territorial hippos
trample anything in their path.
I didn't like tapping
out on day 31.
You hate being so
weak. I can't do it.
Want to know what it feels
like to go through 40 days
and succeed, 'cause
it does eat me up often.
I'm super competitive,
and not being able
to finish the challenge,
it was devastating.
Clarence: The number-one
thing that I learned
during my last
challenge in South Africa
was death can come to
anyone at any point in time,
like a thief in the night.
Can't catch my breath.
[ Breathing heavily ]
I need a medic.
This time, I got my soul
strong and my body strong.
When I finish Africa this time,
I'm gonna be standing tall.

Lacey: Holy crap.

with a pot to boil the murky water...

I made a knife
for the challenge.
...while each
survivalist has chosen
a personal blade
for protection...
Killed many a gator and
many a pig with that knife.

chances for survival.

Melissa: Okay, so I'm looking at
this, and I'm seeing some lions.
Kudu -- good
hunting, right there.
I would just like to be where
there's some sort of water
-so I can catch fish...
-Agreed.
-...croc, whatever.
-I like it.
-Let's go.
-Let's do it.

Kaila: Obviously, we want to
get water as soon as we can, too.
'Cause this sun's gonna
dehydrate us real fast.
♪♪
Guys, look, to your right.
-Holy [bleep]
-Oh, yes.
Damn! What do we got?
Dude, it's a kudu.
Giant, dead, male kudu.
Immediately, you
can smell death.
It permeates your nostrils
and your taste buds,
and, I mean, it is just
death all around us.

of that hide for shoes?
We could take
the ears right off.

Shane: Well, that's a

Shane: A high-traffic

Lacey: I think my
feet are blistering.
That's exactly what I
experienced last time in Africa.
-Burning lava sand?
-Burning hot ground.
Yeah.
That's a game trail.

I was just looking at that.
I like the shade here,
and I like the pre --
boma stuff already set.
And you can see what's
coming into the water.
Let's clean it up and
make it look all pretty.

-Okay.
-Looks like about high noon,
and we're building a shelter.
It's called a boma, and it
keeps all the big game out.
So, the first
layer is just sticks,
6 feet high, 6 feet wide.
Then you pack thorns all
the way around the outside.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
I had difficulties in Ecuador
with female partners.
I was kind of
like, "go, go, go."
And my partners
wanted me to chill.
-We need protein.
-And we'll get it.
Will we, though? If we
don't do anything, will we?
I have a tendency to get pushy.
I feel like, right now,
our group is all talk.
And that sounds harsh,
but that's what I feel like.
That was really harsh, actually.
I don't think you should
ever say that again.
This time, I'm going
to have to keep
my pushy, "motivational"
drive in check.
-Uh, uh, no, no.

Getting to meet Trent, I
mean, I think he's a lot like me.
We both love to hunt. I
mean, that's something
that me and him's both
been doing all our lives.
Gary, he's definitely a
go-getter. He's a hard worker.
I'm moving this big
tree. Look at that.
Probably weights, I don't
know, 300, 400 pounds.

[ Hollering ]
Gary's louder than us.
And firewood is what that is!
Gary's not the hunter type,
but he's got a lot
of other knowledge.
I think there's opportunity here
for all three of us
to have a good bond.
Me and the hunter
and the trapper,
the wolf pack of Africa
is breaking it down
and getting busy,
'cause we need --
before the sun sets,
we need to protect
ourselves from lions
and hyenas and predators,
because they're
very real out here.

Ow. The ground is hot.
Dude, there's bones over there.
-It's kind of creepy.
-This is scary.

Death -- that's
all it is out here.
This is just
borderline wasteland.
Well, we don't want
to stay in the [bleep]
We need to move downwind
so that any of the
smells we're emitting
are not gonna be
detected at this water hole.
That way, not only are we
not going to attract predators,
hopefully, we'll also be able
to better hunt anything
that's around here.
'Cause if they smell us,
they're gonna move away.
There's a tr-- hey, look,
there's a downed tree.
We could put a
wall there. I like this.
Long as we can get shade on it.
I don't know how long I
can stand on these hot rocks.
So we're basically gonna
have a circular boma here.
We're gonna gather some
really big wood to begin with,
work together, bring
the wood around it,
establish the perimeter,
and then pack on as
many thorns as we can,
try to get it 6 feet high.
Sarah, I mean, she's
naming off stuff left and right,
this, that, and the other.
Yeah, nice one, Mel.
Mel's just -- ooh, she's
tough, tougher than bulls.
I got strength and
brains out here with me.

The heat is just oppressive.
My heart is still beating
out of my chest right now.

I've never been so hot.

Thorn trees in the shade.

Can't hardly walk

at this pace, like,
we are not gonna finish
our boma by tomorrow night.

We have worked our tails off,
and we're building a
boma that has taken all day.

We have the advantage
of having a berm,
you know, this
nice big Ridge line.
So, we're only building
half of a boma, really,
but it's so slow going.

game ranger arrives
with news of a
gruesome discovery.
Just 1/2 mile away...
Man: Back here.
...the bodies of two
poachers have been found...
Oh, my god.
...killed by lions.

-Okay.
-Okay.
There are two male lions.
They have killed people
here, and so, that --
I mean, it's real.
If we don't have a good
shelter, it's [clicks tongue]
Kaila: This whole
wall, we need to fill in.
Like, we still have all of this.
-Dude, we're [bleep]
-No, we're [bleep]
There's no way.
Like, there's no way.

This sucks. Just

It's minutes from
being totally dark.
Our boma's not even
close to being finished.
It's gonna have

We have to keep the
flame all night long,
because that is what
the lions are afraid of.

We were told that there's
two male lions around here.
They killed two poachers,
and the thing that's
scary about that is,
you know, once they've
had a taste for flesh,
they know that they can eat it.
That makes us a little
bit nervous, for sure.

-Lindsey?
-Yeah?
What did we just hear?
We just heard a lion.

Kaila: Oh, my god.
We survived night 1.
And there was a lion outside
of our camp at one point.
Four toe pads, and
then a big one, right here.
These tracks over
here, you can see
that they lead into camp.
We got to get, like,
more thorns, too,
and put them all around here.
Our top priority is making
our boma a lot more secure.
We still have, like, all
of this over here, too.
We'll get it. We just
got to keep going.
Narrator: 2 1/2 miles
northwest, at pitsi flats,
duck, Melanie, and Sarah
are waking up to the effects
of the blistering African sun.
Sarah: Told you
this place is savage.
Melanie: I'm burnt to a crisp.
That by-god sun has no mercy.
I feel like [bleep] and it's
all because of my sunburn.
Mel really outdid
herself, and I can tell you,
enough sun out here will
cook you down like no other.
I am headed out to get
some shade material.
Sarah: I will come, too.
Mel, you don't need
to be out in that sun
-no more than you have to be.
-I know, man.
Holler when that water's ready.
Melanie: There's no
escape from the sun out here.
I just need to stay
out of the sun today.
I say that as I can feel the
sun beating on my back.
Oh, it hurts. Aah, my back.

Narrator: 3 miles
west, at makubu gorge,
the veterans are taking their
first measures to secure food.
♪♪
Lacey: I want to try
to get these in, Shane.
I am setting my
lines up for fishing.
We can cross there. I
crossed there earlier.
Okay.

Yeah, that's interesting.
That's what crocodile
scat looks like.
-Holy cow.
-But smell it.
♪♪
That's definitely crocodile.
♪♪
Did you see that?
[ Whispering ] Oh. Crocodile.
I definitely believe
he's stalking us.
The crocodiles are learning
our patterns while we learn theirs.
Yeah, all the predators
are very smart.
They didn't last
millions of years
because they're dumb as posts.
I'm thinking we can
hop across these rocks.
I don't know how
comfortable you feel with that.
Keep your eyes on the water.
Yeah, I don't know if
I'm comfortable there.
I don't want to make
too much splashing
and bring a croc
over to our area.
I'm gonna go the long way.
I'm going this way.
Shane: Lacey's got big balls.
I like that she's a risk-taker.
You have to take risks
out here to survive.
But there's a limitation
to the amount of risks
that I'm willing to take,
and she's making
me a little nervous.

Gary, Jeremy, and Trent
are feeling confident
in their preparations.
♪♪
First time I ever
made it through a night
with that much wood left over.
Gary was a powerhorse
rounding that stuff up.
Gary: I'm gonna work
on some shelter here.
If you want, I could do this
while you guys go out and hunt.
I could not ask
for a better team.
Gary, he says, "I
got camp. I'll take fire.
I'll start the structure."
Jeremy and I, we like to hunt.
All right, Gary,

They're out there
focusing on the hunting.
I'm focusing on our safety.
I'm loving my partners,
because, last time,
in Brazil, I was alone.
Everything wants
to bite and poke me.
Luckily, I like the suffering.
I like the biting
bugs. I like the pain.
I like to eat disgusting [bleep]
But my biggest regret was
that I roasted that fruit and ate it.
And I poisoned myself.
I'm feeling it hard right now.
It's burning holes in my mouth.
It hurts. Bad. [ Vomits ]
Maybe you'd better
take me to a hospital.
I thought I was
really gonna die.
This is my redemption.
This time around, I make
it all the way through.

our shelter a lot more secure.
But to be successful as a team,
we need to continually get food.
We have to become
apex predators out here.
Thorns everywhere.

About 25 of them, it looks like.
One of those would
feed us for days.

There's lots of movement
in the water down there.
It looks to be fish.
Melissa. Lindsey.
There's another

and it looks like
it's full of fish.
Lindsey: Oh, sweet, okay.

Don't know what it was,

a track of one, and two,
and a little one. So,
we have a family.

So, that makes this area
even more dangerous.
'Cause they will do anything
to protect their young.

chopping more thorns
and putting them
back up on the boma.
Lacey: Clarence has
struggled on past challenges.
Clarence: Watch
out for the thorns.
Lacey: But after seeing
the tracks this morning,
I totally appreciate Clarence.
He's smart, and he
knows a lot about Africa.
He's an amazing asset
to have on our team.
Clarence: Here we go.
Lacey: Is that
what I think it is?
Those are figs.
They're up really high.
There's some right
there and some up there.
I can see at least a
dozen, if not more.
I would climb it, get up there
and get the figs before
the monkeys, but...
Based on past experiences,
I realize that sometimes
my judgement's not so great.
If I had to do a risk
assessment of my own, I'd say...
7% chance that I would fall.

I don't like how the

I want it to be more fortified.
We need lots of Thorn
bushes, lots of them.

With lions, it's
got to hurt them.
They're tough.
I want to be able to
sleep like a baby tonight.

been attacked and killed.
But it definitely become
a good food source for us.

It was a kill on a
rock we came across.
Man, that looks fresh.
-We get lunch today.

the survivalists deploy

scattered among the area's

in a deadly high-grass area,
feared by local tribes
for its extremely aggressive
population of lions.

I'm the predator
there, no doubt about it.
But out here, you know,
you kind of become the prey.
Only difference is, you naked.

northwest at shosho ravine,
the all-male pack
of Jeremy, Gary,
and Trent combines
their diverse skills.

some of that impala.
It's necessary to keep
the smoke on it all night.
Otherwise, the meat has a
chance of just going rotten.
I could bury that overnight,
and it'd be good tomorrow.
-It won't spoil.

out of this shelter
for 12 solid hours,
I don't want no part of it.
I don't agree with having
meat, even if it's cooked,
in the boma, at all.
It's too dangerous.
It's exactly what
lions and hyenas eat.
