Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 3, Episode 1 - Heart of Darkness - full transcript

Nine Naked and Afraid veterans attempt to survive the deadly jungles of Ecuador's Amazon Basin for 40 days and 40 nights. To make it out alive, they'll have to master the environment, push the limits of human endurance.

Fernando: Just a couple
fish tonight, we'll be set.

Here's the water's edge.

I cannot see, like,
2 inches down.

- Ah!
- You okay?

Shannon: You think about
the dangers out here...

Caiman, snakes.

Everything comes out at night.

This is one of
the scariest things

I've actually done in my
life, is right here tonight.

- Okay, I felt some there.
- I know.

[ Whispering ] We can hear a
caiman somewhere around us.

[ Gasps ]

Ow! Aaah!

Narrator: Ecuador's
Amazon basin...

One of the most
remote places on earth.

2,000 square miles of swamp

stretches to an endless horizon.

Colossal storms
punish the landscape

with up to 15 feet
of rain each year,

leaving this primeval forest
permanently submerged.

Here 100,000 species of
insect ravage the forest floor.

Now nine "naked
and afraid" veterans

will put their lives
on the line... aah!

Oh, my god, those
are claw marks.

- That's a Jaguar.
- Holy [bleep]

And attempt the impossible.

Oh [bleep] cut my foot.

Ohh.

To survive this rotting hell...

Shannon: The bugs are
killing us. They're swarming.

Narrator: For 40
days and 40 nights.

On "naked and afraid,"

they've already endured
21 days of agony.

Now they enter deep into

a nightmarish heart of darkness.

Matt W.: Dude, what the [bleep]
was that? Something's out there.

- They're... ow!
- [ Gasps ]

Narrator: To make it out alive,

they must master the
environment... [ gasps ]

Holy [bleep]

And push the limits
of human endurance.

- [ Gasps ]
- Aah! [Bleep] Call a medic.

Then, for the first time
ever... what is that?

The survivalists are stunned

by unexpected
guests... oh, my god.

I did not see that coming.

Narrator: As worlds
collide... holy [bleep]

Narrator: On
"naked and afraid XL."

Russell: This place right
here is... this is off the grid.

We're in Jurassic
park right now.

It is. It is, yo.

Lacey: Oh, my god.

That tree is, like, sitting
in the middle of nowhere.

This is, like, flooded.

It's amazing.

Fernando: From
what I see right now,

we may have to
build a treehouse.

It kind of looks like man
isn't supposed to live here.

And we get to do it for 40 days.

- [ Laughs ]
- We're so lucky.

Narrator: A 40-day
challenge unfolds

in a vast no-man's land

flooded by runoff from
the Andes mountains.

This time, nine survivalists

will start in three
groups of three.

Each trio will be marooned

at a separate camp
along the caiman river.

Here only a few limited areas

of precious high ground exist

behind a dense tangle
of mangrove swamp.

Amber: If we don't
feel fear out here,

then you're just crazy and dumb

because everything out
here wants to eat you.

Matt a.: This is a swamp.

Gonna have snakes
and everything else in it.

Caimans, electric eels
[Bleep] like that, you know?

Matt W.: Those piranhas,
man, the teeth on those things.

- It's nasty.
- Like, one bite,

and now you've got
just an open hole.

- Exactly.
- They're everywhere, too.

I mean, every square
inch of this water

would have a chance of piranha.

Narrator: Just south of the
equator lies Punta Araña,

where a team of
three men debarks

in steep, slippery terrain,

overrun by 47
different kinds of ants

and deadly predators

such as the Brazilian
wandering spider,

the most venomous
arachnid on earth.

This is one challenge where
we're gonna have to rely...

Whether we like
each other or not...

We got to rely on each other.

Matt W.: Let's make the
Amazon our bitch, huh?

To some people, this is a game.

To me, it's more than that.

When I did my first "naked
and afraid" challenge,

at the time, I was
the oldest to do it.

- Yeah!
- Yeah!

I'm the oldest now, for sure.

I'm starting to think, what
the frick is wrong with me?

Maybe I don't like getting old.

Why do you climb the mountain?

Why do you jump
out of airplanes?

Test yourself.

The only thing I’m
afraid of is not finishing.

Anything else that
comes along, I'll deal with.

I have a feeling we're home.

I think we may be
walking from here.

- You ready?
- Born ready. - Do it, dude.

Narrator: Six miles
north at Laguna Negra,

two men and one woman
go ashore in a dank marsh

infested with piranha,

whose razor-sharp
teeth rapidly strip flesh

from their prey.

Fernando: You can't even see

three or four inches
down in this water.

This reminds me of
back home in the swamps.

Matt a.: You know, a few of
these survivors live in the city,

but this isn't a
weekend hobby for me.

This is basically how I live.

I grew up around
here in the swamps.

I have a little goat. She
comes everywhere with me.

You know, I don't really
look at it toward survival.

I just look at it as
another day in the woods.

Shannon: Here it is.

- You guys ready?
- Let's go.

Narrator: Three miles to
the southeast at Rio Mortal,

an all-female trio
arrives at a murky inlet

teeming with caiman

and the largest snake in
the world, the anaconda,

which can grow
up to 30 feet long

and weigh over 500 pounds.

It's like the beginning
of a horror movie.

Giovanna: During my first
challenge, I couldn't stay out here

for the full 21 days
that I was supposed to.

Producer: The
circumstances of this challenge

have made it impossible
for us to let you go on.

Obviously, 40 days
is a lot longer than 21,

but I mean, I'm just somebody

who's, like, bold
enough to actually try it.

And maybe that in
itself is a strength.

The bugs are already bad.

Amber: Wow, I'm seeing all kinds

of things scatter
as I'm walking.

Oh, my god.

Coming out here to the Amazon,

this is one of the most
scariest environments

I've ever been in.

There's a couple of snakes
out here that will attack you.

They just don't sit there
and take a step back.

They will jump at
your face and bite you.

Charlie: Black palm
right in front of me, men.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

Matt W.: Black palm
is a son of a bitch.

It's growing like
weeds down here.

Just to think about
going out there butt naked

running through
black palm is terrifying.

Shannon: Well, it's really
thick jungle we're going into.

Yeah, this is gonna be... fun.

Fernando: A good friend of mine,

a fellow firefighter,
always says,

"Ferny, you could
eat a [bleep] sandwich

and say how good the bread is."

I think that helps in
a survival situation

because that's all you
really have in the end,

is your mental state of mind.

Okay.

[ Laughter ]

All right.

Well, this is good.

There's our bags.

Narrator: Each trio is
supplied with a cast-iron pot.

That is a big pot.

In addition, each survivalist

has picked out a
particular blade.

I brought my trusty kukri.

I have a bug net.

Narrator: And to do battle with
the menacing Amazon jungle,

all challengers carry
unique survival tools.

Matt W.: I got my long bow.

- Yeah.
- I actually made this sucker.

Charlie: Will it work in
an environment like this?

- Oh, yeah.
- Oh, and one more item.

- Ooh. Look at that.
- I have the map.

We should definitely
explore the high ground first.

And these large trees we're
gonna need for our shelter.

All right, sounds
good. Heading east?

Yep, let's go.

Day 1.

See ya later, clothes.

♪♪

Amber: Oh, god,
something bit my ass so hard.

The bugs are [bleep] horrible.

- Aah!
- What's wrong?

That's black palm there.

Ow. [Bleep] Hurts.

Man, those things
are so scary-looking.

This is like reality
setting in, guys.

Yeah.

This challenge is
third time is the charm.

I had to tap out on day
16 in the everglades

due to parasites.

My boob hurts so bad.

When I was in Africa,
I was the first girl

to break a boob on TV.

I'm gonna be that person

with a hole in her
boob that had to leave.

It breaks my heart
knowing I didn't complete.

I have the drive inside
of me and the skills,

and I want to go kick butt.

- Whoop. Whoa. Oh, no.
- You okay?

- Yeah, I'm fine.
- Okay.

Lacey: I worry especially
because I'm with two females.

I have zero friends
that are girls.

I get along better
with males in general

just because they tend to not
be as sensitive and have, like...

Like, feelings,
like, all the time.

Ow [bleep]

Ow, ow, they're everywhere.
Hurry, hurry, hurry.

So, I'm gonna try to,
like, stay open-minded.

As open-minded as I can.

I really hope it gets easier.

Ow, you son of a bitch.

Freaking wasp. Damn it.

- Something trying to eat us.
- Yeah.

Russell: Oh, ants
right here. Cutter ants.

Watch your foot
right there, Matt.

Matt W.: Ow, ow, ow.

First time I've ever
seen leafcutter ants.

- Really?
- In real life.

Being in a rainforest,

there's probably
more bug variety

than any place in the
United States combined.

So without a doubt,
I'm gonna be elevated.

Hey, guys. Let's
get a game plan.

I'm thinking individual. I
don't know how you guys feel.

Matt W.: You want
to just branch off?

We'll each start our own
shelter kind of scenario?

Russell: I'm thinking that.

Yeah, we're not gonna
snuggle together, so...

I hate being cold,
but I'm still a man.

That ain't [bleep] happening.

Timber.

How you doing back there, Matt?

Doing good. How you guys doing?

All right, pal.

Matt W.: Charlie is... he feels
like one of my military buddies.

You know, he's a go-getter.

He's marine corps
through and through.

- [Bleep]
- You all right, brother?

Yeah.

I didn't expect to see you
up a tree on the first day.

Neither did I.

First tree climb... not as
young as I thought I was.

I'm always afraid that
there will be a point

where I can't make it.

And that's not an
option. That would kill me.

You know, I think age

doesn't have anything
to do with it, brother,

'cause you were
out here doing it

when a lot of young kids tapped.

I'm-a tell you... I tried
to take my walking cane.

They said it was another item.

[ Laughs ]

Russell: I fit in with an
Alpha group pretty well

because I'm a bit of an [bleep]

Glad you got the opportunity
to see my nice-looking ass.

[ Laughs ]

I think with three males,

there's not gonna
be so much drama.

I feel very confident
in our ability

to get through this.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Raining now. Ain't
that a kick in the ass.

Matt W.: Welcome to the Amazon.

It's gonna be a
fun 40 days, boys.

- Brrr! Holy [bleep] balls.
- Yeah.

I think it's gonna do this
every day right around now.

Fernando: This
feels very familiar

to my 21-day
challenge in Malaysia.

This water, my mouth.

This... it's all
coming back to me.

You all right?

Shannon is definitely a badass.

You have, like, the
look... like the rain,

the machete, 1,000-yard stare.

She's a stonemason by trade,

and so she has no
problem chopping,

doing some heavy
lifting. It's pretty awesome.

Matt a.: We got
to get a fire going.

The mosquitos are
starting to come out.

Shannon: I'll do it.

With all the bugs and
the ants and everything,

if we don't get fire tonight,

then we're gonna be miserable.

Oh, my god. Oh, my god.

Ugh! Terrible.

I hate not moving
around. This sucks.

Fernando: Come on,
Shannon. You got this.

Ugh! [Bleep]

Hey, Fernando, you
can do this for a second

'cause I'm getting
bit like crazy.

Ohh! Whoa.

I'm okay. I'm okay.

I'm a professional.
Nobody worry.

Matt a.: Oh [bleep] cut my foot.

- Really?
- Yep.

- Gross.
- You okay?

Shannon: What happened to it?

Dropped my knife on my foot.

- Your knife?
- [Bleep]

There's blood everywhere.

Oh, mother[Bleep]

Russell: You know what, guys?

It feels really good
to have partners

that actually know
how to start fires.

Charlie: Uh, there's
no fire yet, Russell.

You might want to hold off till
we get one started there, Russ.

Oh, no, dude. We'll get one.

Expectations are
pretty high there.

Oh, come on, brother.

I have faith in you.

We're gonna need a
lot of firewood, guys.

This stuff's gonna
burn fairly quick.

We need more firewood.

Just looking for dry wood now.

Be careful on
that path, brother.

It's all slippery.

With a little bit of rain,
this terrain gets muddy

and more treacherous.

Aah! Ohh!

You [bleep]

That ain't good.

- You all right?
- Aah, aah!

What's up, bud? You all right?

- I just broke my knee.
- Seriously?

Aaah [bleep]

Aah!

Aah! Ohh!

What's up, bud? You all right?

- I just broke my knee.
- Seriously?

- Ohh!
- Call a medic.

And I'm in an ant
pile. [Bleep] Me.

- Ohh!
- Medic!

- Aah, aah!
- Hold on, bud.

We're coming down.

Aah!

Holy sheep, dude.

Yeah, that's not good.

Aaah!

I'm okay.

Holy [bleep]

Can I stay in with
a dislocated knee?

Are you gonna put
it back into place?

I ripped my tendons.

I don't want to leave
on the first freaking day.

Dude, we don't want
you to leave, brother.

Wait a minute. No,
I ain't going on that.

Take that and use it as a raft
or a life board or a surfboard.

I ain't going anywhere.
I want to go that way.

On a scale of 1 to 10 in pain,

it's a zero. It doesn't hurt.

I want to go back to work.

Woman: It needs
to be immobilized.

Well, Mr. Charlie, what
the doctor's saying here,

it looks like you may have
ruptured one of your ligaments

or one of your
tendons in your knee.

We don't think we
can in good conscience

medically let you
continue the challenge.

And we're gonna have to get
you back to the United States

for possibly surgery.

I can't leave these two guys.

Hey, man. No matter
what, tough [bleep]

All right, brother, I got you.

Marines don't quit.

But I can't walk.

This ain't a tap-out.

I ain't tapping out.

The first [bleep] day.

- I'm sorry, guys.
- It's all right.

Matt W.: You're not leaving us.

Your knee is
dragging you off, so...

- Yeah. I'm walking out.
- You need any help?

No... no, I'm good.

Thank you, men.
Be careful, all right?
