Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 2, Episode 5 - Rock Bottom - full transcript
Steven fails to return with Darrin from their two-day hunting expedition, leaving the group with no choice but to break camp in a desperate search for answers.
Steven: I'm gonna get
about a baseball-size rock.
When a big old herd
comes down there again,
I'm jumping out of my blind,
and I'm hitting one of them
and tackling that bitch
like an NFL player.

Narrator: In the
drought-stricken s
a group of "naked
and afraid" veterans
are taking on an unthinkable
survival challenge...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
...to endure 40
days and 40 nights
in the most savage
wilderness on the planet.
[ Shouts indistinctly ] Hey!
Narrator: To make it out alive,
they must push their limits,
master their
environment... Oh, my god!
...and survive each other.
Woman: I think its gonna
be tremendously difficult.
Narrator: This is
"naked and afraid xl."

halfway through
the 40-day challenge,
nine survivalists
are still standing
in the scorching
heat of South Africa,
under constant threat
of deadly predators.
Woman: We are
right in the kill zone.
-Oh, my god.
-Holy [bleep]
Narrator: They've merged
into one group at swati valley
to achieve safety in numbers
but are now desperate
to secure enough protein.
Africa's no joke. It's
definitely beating me down.
Jake: And we cannot
just get by on a few fish
when it's a group of nine.
We need a substantial
source of meat.
Just a piece of advice --
you really should be covering
your feet and your
hands in mud and stuff.
Bitch, please.
Narrator: And
conflicting strategies
are creating tension
within the group.
Ryan: The group that
has been here the longest
are not the best hunters.
So I set snares
where I felt something
big was gonna come down.
It's not gonna get
through this one.
There's a snare right there.
That looks so good.
They're right there.
-[ Gasps ]
-We got a snare. Snare!
-She's in a snare.
-Snare!
Woman: Ryan!
Snare! Ryan!
[ Water splashes ]
-Ryan!
-Yeah.
He's in the snare.
Jake: It's go time for me.
Complete starvation-fueled
Michael Phelps explosion.
-Yeah. He's at the beach.
-Ryan!
Go!
Oh, my [bleep] he's off.
[Bleep] [Bleep]
Damn it.
Snares were set up pretty good.
-Yeah.
-Which one was it?
I had two of them set here.
Second one's gone.
It's gone?
-Is the rope gone?
-Yeah.
Oh [bleep]
So maybe it was
my tie-down point.
This branch right here is gone.
It must have taken it.
Jake: It seems as
though one of the nyala
has gotten caught up in
one of Ryan's foot snares.
However, his tie-off
point was way too weak.
I mean, they're strong.
That's the thing is, like,
we need bases of trees.
Yeah, it's got to
be wrapped around
like a 3-inch-thick green tree.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
Well, working with what I got.
I took it upon myself to utilize
the material that we have.
You know, it wasn't a
failure. It snared the animal.
Yeah, it got away, but it's not
gonna get away a second time.
I got like six, seven more
snares I'm gonna put up there.
Just got to tie them off to
something heavier next time.
When I was a kid, an
old-timer took me out
and taught me
snaring, like, hardcore.
I mean, for a couple years,
I killed hundreds and
hundreds of animal,
like, up to deer size.
I also always, like, put brush
up against my neck snares
so they think that they're
pushing through brush.
[ Sighs ] I'm
gonna go rinse off.
It's a lot easier doing
this by myself yesterday.
Steven: If you don't, you
know, set up the snare right,
it's not gonna work.
It's a big loss. I mean,
that was a lot of meat,
and it really -- it would have
done a lot for everybody.
So we can't make
that mistake again.
[Bleep]
[ Wind gusting ]
[ Fire crackling ]
Super-windy night.
The fire is throwing
coals and little embers
into our hair and
body and burning us.
And it's just kind of not the
funnest in the whole world,
so we're not really
able to fall asleep.
[ Wind howling ]
The wind is whipping.
Sparks flying everywhere.
Luckily there's no rain.
[ Thunder rumbling ]
[ Rain falling ]
Woman: Not gonna be a fun night.
It's early morning on
day 23, and it's miserable.
[Bleep]
[ Thunder crashing ]
I'm really hungry right now,
which does not help these
kind of situations at all.
[ Insects buzzing ]
Last night was a little
rough, to say the least.
We had a pretty steady
rain for most of the night.
You kind of have
to grin and bear it.
Hopefully have a
productive rest of the day
and get a little food and,
um, keep pushing through.
After that nyala got
snared yesterday,
that had to freaking [bleep]
Like, "oh, my god, I got
to get something now."
-Yep.
-So sick of setting snares.
It's gonna pay off
'cause I put a lot of time
and effort into what I do.
I don't know.
I mean, I feel
like at this point,
it's almost worth finding
a different hunting ground
that's completely clean
of smells and [bleep]
Darrin: Yeah, like, I
really want to go back
and try hunting
back at Alpha camp.
I see more animals over
there in the first two hours of day
than I've seen the
whole time I've been here.
Steven: It's like a
freaking zoo over there.
Yeah.
I want to go back to my old camp
just because there's so
much more game there.
100 animals a day come down
to drink there instead of 20 here.
It would be 10 times more
effective over there, I think.
Earlier we can get
big game, the better.
I want the best hunter
in the best location
to secure food for us.
It's a risk, but at this point,
we really don't have any food,
so something's got to be done.
Ryan: Well, how long
you plan on going?
I'd say two days.
If nothing's caught by day 25,
are you both gonna come back?
No matter what, on day 25,
both of us are gonna be back here.
Yeah.
I'm one of those
people that likes
being able to take
care of somebody,
you know, have
people to take care of.
I grew up hunting.
That's what I love to do.
One of my main goals was
to kill an animal with my atlatl.
It's the most primitive
weapon on the planet.
This is my
opportunity right now.
Darrin: We only
have two arrows left.
Just got to get some
bone points ready
if we're gonna go
on a hunting trip.
Kim has a bow, but I have
the best success in this group
with that bow to get an animal.
I have indigenous living skills.
When I was a small child,
I learned to hunt and live off
the land with primitive tools,
to make my own
tools to hunt with.
When you're notching those hot,
you might end up
snapping the whole thing.
Jake: There's a lot
of lions in the den now
as far as skill sets.
Darrin has the most to offer,
as we've been reminded...A lot.
Darrin: Saw two
grooves, not just one.
And never twist your knife
'cause if you get a
crack going down that,
you hit a bone like a rib bone,
instead of it going through,
it'll crack your shaft
back and split it.
Could you not watch me?
You're making me
very nervous right now.
-Oh, sorry.
-Okay, thank you.
[ Laughs ]
Darrin's enthusiasm combined
with his knowledge, you know,
sometimes does come
across as a bit of a know-it-all.
Take this one, too, Steven.
Never put all your
faith in one tool.
Yep.
They're gonna kill each other.
100%.
All right, team.
We will see you in
two days -- day 25.
-See ya guys.
-Bye.
Or earlier with a
massive, delicious carcass.
Ryan: You know, the
hopes are really high
for those twto be successful
and come back with that
big game and that red meat.
It's for us to live off of
for the next few weeks,
maybe all the way to day 40.
May your spear kill
everything it touches.
Yeah.
Stacey: This hunt
is so important
because all of us are starving.
But there's, you know,
active lions constantly
prowling the area.
It's an extremely
dangerous task to take on.
Steven: There's some
fresh [bleep] super fresh.
You noticing how much scat's
on this hillside on this trail?
Yeah, man. And there's
lots of different kinds of it, too.
I mean, there's still lions.
They're probably still out here.
They're probably just
in the shade right now.
Steven: Nothing here is safe.
Our journey from point "a" to
point "b" is always treacherous.
This is one of the few
places on the planet
where half the
animals can kill you.
[ Insects buzzing ]
Holy [bleep]
Would you look at that?
Little dead warthog right there?
There's sign -- lions, leopards.
The threats are real,
and it puts you in your place
real quick, I tell you what.
On day 2, like, right near my
blind, we saw two male lions.
Yeah, I mean, just 'cause
they're nocturnal hunters
doesn't mean they don't
hunt during the day, too.
Yeah.
[ Animal growls ]
Oh, stop. I just
heard something.
On day 2, like, right near my
blind, we saw two male lions.
Yeah, I mean, just 'cause
they're nocturnal hunters
doesn't mean they don't
hunt during the day, too.
Yeah.
Today's hunt day.
Going over the Ridge, gonna
check out some new land.
Hopefully, get to
come back with animals
over our shoulders like cavemen.
[ Animal growls ]
Oh, stop. I just
heard something.
Might be a wildebeest.
-Just keep going.
-Keep your voice down.
[ Bird chattering ]
I think I got a good one.
Jake: Haven't had the
best success with food
the last several days.
Come on, you piece of [bleep]
So, really hoping to
make the most of today,
try to get ourselves
back on track,
'cause you can feel the
energy dropping in the group.
Come on.
Nothing.
Even though our fuel
tanks are emptying,
everybody's still
trying their hardest
to really make this group
as successful as possible.
-Ooh.
-Okay, I'm gonna toss this.
Got it.
Yay, it's happening. Whoo.
We decided that today we
could go and get some cattails
and hopefully harvest enough
to use sort of like a potato.
And we think that
having some starch
will be long-lasting sugar
to keep our energy levels up.
These are cattail tubers.
They're the roots
of the cattail.
Looks, like, just so disgusting.
But all of us are starving.
They're gonna be so good.
Ready? [ Chuckles ]
I think we're good.
Ryan: While Darrin and
Steven are over there,
I think my energy
is best spent here.
I'm just gonna inundate
this entire hillside
in the best spots
with foot snares.
You know, it is just
me, one out of nine,
that really thinks that
these things are gonna work.
I'm determined,
and I'm not giving up.
There's a nyala right there.
It's freaking nuts.
Just showed up to
Darrin and Kim's camp.
Had some of the most
animal activity I've seen yet.
All the animals
come down to water.
You can see where the mud is
all churned up from their hooves.
So they all come from two paths.
They either come from over here
or they come from right here.
My game plan is for me to
take the blind that is enclosed,
where I can shoot a bow from,
and on the other
side of our lake,
there's an open area
with some tall grass
where Steven can duck
down, 'cause he's got an atlatl.
An atlatl takes
more space to throw.
That'd be perfect. I
can even stand up.
I'm gonna go build
up my blind a little bit.
Cool.
When you're in a blind, you
got to position it in the right area
so you're close
enough to a game trail
but not too close that
it's gonna spook anything.
Right in here, I
got my little blind.
When I sit down, basically,
just my eyes are over the top.
I can move around enough to
where I don't make any noise.
I can see Darrin's blind
right across from my spot.
[Bleep] [ Groans ]
Primitive hunting requires
the utmost Patience.
The slightest twitch in a
blind will scare the animals.
Here, no matter where they are,
there is something
trying to kill them,
and they're so on guard.
[ Arrow clatters ]
I can get an atlatl
shot off at an impala.
I couldn't stand up.
I had to do it sitting down,
and I clipped a tree branch,
broke the tip of my atlatl.
It's, like, a huge bummer.
Ryan: These are
wildebeest horns that I found,
and I knew I wanted
to do something with it,
so utilizing a little
bit of the snare wire,
I'm working on making
myself a nice, little headdress.
I've got some high
hopes that my snares
are gonna be
extremely effective today.
Can't wait to watch one of
these nyala get snagged up
and snared for us to have
an abundance of protein.
See the nyala?
They're coming down.
Woman: I feel like they're
way more cautious now.
Yeah, maybe because
they already snared one once
and they're super wary now.
There's one coming
down right there.
Ryan: There's two or
three nyala right now
within 10 feet of
two of my snares,
and they know something's up.
Oh, there's one coming
around to the other snare.
Two feet in front of it --
two feet in front of
that deer is a snare.
Right there -- head down to
the snare, smelling the snare.
All he's got to do is take two
steps forward and he's snagged.
Mother[bleep]
They're leaving.
I don't know how they
know, but they know.
[Bleep]
Stacey: Today we had
another failed attempt
on our snares across the lake.
Had quite a few nyala
come down, sniff out,
and completely go around
some of the snares, so that sucks.
I can't believe that [bleep]
I hope Darrin and Steve
are successful today.
Steven: Today's hunt
is absolutely crazy.
I've seen over 100 animals,
but they're all out of range.
Burned a bunch of calories today
just sitting out
there in the sun.
It's a bummer, man.
What's up, buddy?
Had an atlatl shot.
Broke my tip.
That's tough, dude.
[ Sighs ]
I'm gonna start needing
to get some protein, too.
Mind if I try your blind
tomorrow with the bow?
I'm sorry. I just -- you know.
I want to be hunting
with that bow.
And you've had
the opportunity...
-I know.
-...And I haven't.
I know, but I need to keep
hunting with it, you know?
I'm trying to put food on the
table for everybody, you know?
And we're in an
environment right now
where that's a
feasible operation.
Darrin: He talked up and down
about how good he was with an
and then he gets one shot
off and says it's no good
and he wants the bow.
You know, I tried to teach him
how to make really nice
atlatl dart with a bone point,
and he wouldn't even
listen to my instruction.
I don't understand
where you're coming from.
I don't want to just get
through this challenge, man.
I want to be the guy that's
gonna provide for the group.
It's your call, but... Sorry.
Steven: I don't know
if he's threatened,
but to make me feel
that I'm not good enough,
it really upsets me.
It is what it is, and I'm
stuck here with him right now,
but I'm gonna prove him wrong.
[ Lions roaring ]
I'm gonna keep
this recording night
in case we get
our faces eaten off,
because there is at least two
lions moving around our camp.
[ Lions roaring ]
Hear that?
All we can hear are, like,
sticks breaking around us,
which is -- it's
pretty freaking nuts.
We've heard a roar.
It pierces your soul.
[ Roaring continues ]
I got our death
horn over here, too.
Darrin: Assembled?
Yeah, assembled and ready.
[ Growls ]
[ Growling ]
Darrin: Lions were the closest
they've ever been last night
to this camp --
way closer than they
ever were for me and Kim.
Towards the middle of the night,
it sounded like they
were down at our lake.
You want to go down there,
mud up, and get back in the blind?
I think I've lost 29 pounds.
I do, too, but I know
what my body looks like.
I can see it, and I look gaunt.
So, this porcupine den that
you guys were talking about
and went and smoked out --
if anybody's willing
to take me up there
and show me where it's
at, I'd love to take a look.
Maybe it came back.
We can take you up
there and check it out.
-You ready?
-Mm-hmm.
-All right. Good luck.
-All right, we'll be back.
-Good luck!
-Thanks.
Ryan's constantly
scheming in his mind,
trying to figure
out the next step
in order to get a
kill or to get food.
Ryan: I'm thinking
a porcupine would
it's been my intention to
find an active animal den
and smoke it out and
harvest it for, you know,
a larger meal for the group.
I really hope that there's
something in there.
It would be amazing.
I don't see any fresh
quills or fresh poop.
-Mnh-mnh.
-Hmm.
You know, based on
some of these tracks
and the flies that are
coming out of there,
I don't think this
is a porcupine den.
I think maybe a
warthog's moved in.
Narrator: The South
African warthog
can grow up to 300 pounds
and would yield enough meat
to feed the group for weeks.
Ryan: The warthog
is definitely one
that you can come
face-to-face with.
You know, one
little flip of their tusk,
and they could
really slice into you
and gash you open pretty good.
Catch an artery, and it
could actually kill you.
Okay, well, how do
you want to do this?
Let's game-plan that.
We literally just got
to get, like, rocks.
The bigger the
rocks, the better.
Damn, phaedra, that's huge.
Tons of flies just
came out of there.
That means a lot
of [bleep] in there.
What do you think?
You're the one that
has to stab the thing.
I'll take care of
that part. Okay.
Phaedra: For everybody's sake,
I hope there's a warthog in there.
There you go. Working good.
That's coming right through.
Sweet.
If I was a warthog,
I don't know how I'd be able
to breathe in there right now.
Nope. He's not home.
I think it was a good effort.
Yeah, for sure.
Phaedra: I've been
here for 25 days.
Based on the fact that
we've been here for so long,
we've already kind of
milked this place dry.
Ryan: That means
25 days of traffic,
25 days of human activity,
25 days of fishing and exploring
and dropping human
scent all over this place.
I feel that it's
time to move on.
[ Animals grunting ]
A hunting blind a little ways
up from the lake at the far end
where some trails come together.
[ Rustling ]
Hopefully we get
something today.
I want one of those
yummy, little nyalas.
Steven: I asked Darrin
if I could use the bow,
and he's not giving
it up, so whatever.
I came out here to bag a mammal,
and that's what I'm gonna do,
and I'm gonna work
as hard as I can to do it.
[ Sighs ]
With the hunger,
the fatigue, the heat...
[Bleep] Waiting
game. I'm tired of this
I have to do something
completely different.
I'm gonna get about
a baseball-sized rock.
When a big old herd
comes down there again,
I'm jumping out of my blind,
and I'm hitting one of them
and tackling that bitch
like an NFL player.
[ Thumping ]
Aah
[Bleep] [Bleep] Go!
Holy [bleep]
Darrin: Steven just took
off running after a nyala
with a rock in his hand.
-I mean...
-[ Sighs ]
...that is not good judgment,
and it kind of scares me.
"A," you don't have a
chance to catch them that way.
And "b," you grab
one of those things,
you're gonna get
kicked and clawed up.
Really, what he's doing
is spooking the animals
and making a fool of himself.
I feel like I need to put in as
much time in here as possible
and utilize my skills.
[ Wind howls ]
You know, I gave my
word that we'd be back.
I told everyone we'd be back.
We have all this massive
amount of protein around here,
and we're not utilizing it.
I know, but when we
make a plan as a group,
we're supposed to stick to it.
We're supposed to go back
to camp tomorrow at day 25,
and I'm a man of
my word, you know?
If I said I'm gonna be
back, I'm gonna be back.
We're gonna lose
a whole hunting day.
This is survival.
We haven't eaten in three days.
What are we gonna
do, fish for 14 days?
I mean, that's good
food, and -- it's laziness.
I don't think it's the fact
that he's worried about
not keeping his word.
I honestly think
he's a lazy ass,
because he hasn't done [bleep]
I'm not trying to
do what I want.
I'm trying to do what's
best for the group right now.
I'm really, like,
apprehensive right now
about breaking our word to the
group, you know, 'cause, like...
Why don't you go back?
I know, but if I go back,
I got to take that bow.
Why?
I just want to
make sure that, like,
you don't lose any more of
those arrows on bad shots.
Okay. I've got probably
20-something years
of bow experience, you know?
[Bleep] Credit, man.
Like, give me a little
like, you're making me feel
like I'm a novice out here.
Dude, I watched you [bleep]
chase a nyala with a rock today.
You're right, I did. It
was the end of the day.
That's what I was doing.
I mean, that makes me worry
about your judgment calls.
Oh, my god. You're
being a smartass right now.
And you're
negating my abilities.
But you've had a bow, and
you haven't bagged anything.
-I know.
-So what's with that?
But I've got, like
[bleep] 40 shots off.
Oh, 40 shots? So
that's zero in 40.
Zero in 40.
This is the thing -- I'm
staying here tomorrow,
and I'm staying in
that blind with the bow.
Good luck. Thank you.
You've had 40 shots, and
you haven't killed anything.
You know [bleep]
I know he thinks he's,
like, super survival guy.
Well, I haven't learned
a [bleep] damn thing
from him out here.
All I've heard was
excuses and stories.
I can get the job done myself.
Steven: I finally got the bow.
It's been guarded by Darrin.
He's had 40 shots, and he
hasn't put any food on the table.
And I finally have the
opportunity to use it.
I mean, when you're zero in 40,
it's probably not
equipment error.
It's probably user error.
Darrin: Steven wants to be
the big man and get a big kill.
He's putting me in a dangerous
situation hiking by myself.
Leaves him in a dangerous
situation to stay in by himself.
But as a group, we
made a deal that on day 25
we would come back over
there, and I'm sticking to it.
It's already getting warmer.
Steven: Get to be here alone.
So stoked about today.
This is my bread
and butter right here.
Hopefully today I can prove
that sometimes you
need to pass the torch
and think more about the
group than just yourself.
Already a nyala bull up there.
That's a good sign.
I think we're tapping
out on our resources.
It's been three days
of almost nothing,
which to go from such
extremes is pretty crazy
since we've gone from being
successful to getting skunked.
Yeah.
I think regardless,
when they come back,
we need to think about moving
to Darrin and Kim's old camp.
Ryan: Yeah, I think
it's a good idea to move.
The new opportunities
for figs and dates and nuts
and the new opportunities
for fishing holes.
Exactly.
I think we're all kind of set
for pushing on
from this location.
I feel like our best
bet at this point
is gonna be to try to harvest
Darrin and Kim's old camp.
You know, we need
to get as many fish
and as many turtles out of
there in the next couple days.
Yeah, well, let's hope
for the best for their return.
I think we should
start gearing up
towards making that
move after they get back.
-Good morning, naked people.
-Whoa.
-Hello.
-What's up?
Darrin: No luck so far.
I promised you guys
we'd be back today.
-That was the word to the group.
-Yeah.
And we saw 200
animals yesterday.
Did you guys catch anything
with the hook and line?
No.
So, you guys haven't eaten yet?
No, we haven't
eaten for three days.
Neither have we.
So, we're talking about moving.
-Everyone?
-There's no fish.
-No fish?
-It's dried up at this point.
-Where's Steven?
-He stayed to hunt.
Ryan: Really?
Yeah, Steven would
not come back today.
He insisted he
keep the bow to hunt.
He absolutely
refused to hand it over.
Ryan: You know, I'm not entirely
sure what Steven's reasons are
for staying over there,
refusing to come back,
and refusing to bring
back the bow and arrow,
which is a group item
and a group weapon --
absolutely key to
our success out here.
Steven kind of worried me.
We had a little argument.
At the end of the day, he,
like, got frustrated with his atlatl
and literally, like,
started chasing a nyala
with a rock in his hand.
Like, that's how desperate
he is to make a kill.
Someone making
decisions like that
jeopardizing all
of our safeties.
Kim: We depend on each other,
and when we make a plan that
someone's gonna come back
in a survival
situation, it's pretty big.
And then he says everyone
over here's just lazy
and waiting to survive.
Phaedra: Seriously?
He said that?
Yeah.
But he really said,
"everybody over there's lazy"?
Yeah. Everyone's --
you know, he was like,
"we're just waiting it out."
I'm like, "no, I don't see
anyone over here being lazy."
Jake: Well, if he's
calling us lazy,
might have to talk a
little sense into Steven.
It sounds like that's gonna
be more challenging, then.
Well, I definitely want him
to air his side of the story, too.
I don't want to
just jump the gun.
Jake is the best
person at this point,
and then we can
talk to him as a group.
That's the best way.
Jake: Hopefully
we can talk it out.
We'll see. You know never know.
People are starting to
get really hungry right now,
which does not help these
kind of situations at all.
[ Hissing ]
It's been good to us.
It's been good to the
whole group, honestly.
But it's time to move on.
-Are we ready?
-Yep.
Ryan: So, the plan
is the whole group
is gonna move over to where
Steven is and utilize that camp,
you know, build up some energy,
and the discussion that
needs to happen with Steven
needs to happen as a group.
Jake: When I get to the camp,
I'll go over and have a little
conversation with Steven.
He basically made the
executive decision to take the bow
even though that was
supposed to come back to camp.
I want to hear
what he has to say,
but the bottom line is,
the group have given me
permission to take it back.
[ Animals grunting ]
Narrator: On this
40-day survival quest,
the survivalists earn a group
"naked and afraid xl" rating,
or xlr, which gauges their
progress, skill, and teamwork.
Although the
survivalists collaborated
to catch fish at swati valley...
[Bleep] Yeah. Got one.
Narrator: ...They failed at
snaring and hunting the big game
needed to support the group.
Woman: Oh [bleep] he's off.
Narrator: And now
personal conflicts
are threatening to
tear the group apart.
You're being a
smartass right now.
And you're
negating my abilities.
As a result, the
group's xlr falls to 6.4.

Steven: The buffalo are a
couple thousand pounds.
It's literally a ton of
animal that can crush you.
They don't back
down to anything.
They take on lions.
They take on people.
They're one of the most
aggressive animals out here.
You kind of let them do
their thing, keep your distance,
and hope they
don't mess with you
or they go right through you.
That's better.
[ Whistling ]
[ Bleep ]
Hunting blind's over on
that far left side of the dam,
big bushes down there.
[ Bleep ]
I'm gonna shoot over
there now to talk to Steven.
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
I think it's best that Jake
goes over, talks to Steven,
kind of defuses the
situation a little bit
before we have a
conversation as a group.
Jake: It's not even a "who
to believe" thing for me.
For me, it's more "secure
our weapon for the group"
than anything else.
-How's it going?
-Good, man.
-I didn't expect anybody.
-Yeah.
A conflict at camp that
we've got to get sorted out.
Come on in, buddy.
What's the word?
What's going on?
Darrin came into camp,
and he had mentioned you guys
had a bit of a heated argument.
The plan was to come
back with the bow and arrow,
and I think it rubbed
some people the wrong way
as far as, I guess,
you mentioned
that the group's been
kind of lazy and...
I never said anybody
was being lazy.
Yeah.
You know, it is what it is,
and I think we just
have to take a step back,
think about the group.
I mean, as of right now,
they asked if I could
take the bow and arrow.
Jake came all
this way, you know,
just to basically take
the bow out of my hands.
I'm pretty pissed off right now.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
I'm just trying to put meat
on the table for everybody,
and now I'm the [bleep] bad guy.
Hurts my feelings, man.
I think some words
got turned around,
and we need to nip
this in the bud, I think.
I made an executive
decision yesterday
to kind of stay and hunt.
I never had a chance
to use the bow.
I was really hoping
to get the opportunity
to put food on the table.
I mean, I feel
like I'm a provider.
And that's what I do at home,
and that's what
I try to do here.
But that's not what we
agreed to as a group,
and that's why I left.
When you make a plan, you
stick to the plan no matter what
in these situations. Yeah.
Obviously, Darrin,
I'm -- I'm really --
I can't get into it
with you right now.
Me and Darrin really
got into it yesterday.
He -- he twisted a
lot of words around.
He said that I called you all
lazy and a few other things.
You did say some
remarks to those lines.
You put words in my mouth.
You said, like, you know,
"everyone's laying around when
they should be doing something."
No, I never said that, Darrin.
And like I said, I'm not gonna
do this back-and-forth thing.
I'm sorry you guys got
the wrong impression,
but I feel like I kind
of got ganged up on
and I couldn't defend myself.
I know that I never
said anything derogatory
or down-putting.
But you can take
with it what you want.
I would hope that you all's
impression of me by now
would be that I'm looking
for the benefit of the group.
He said that we
are lazy over here.
When I asked at
least three times
and you repeated,
"yes, that's what he said,"
and you're saying,
"absolutely not.
-I didn't say that."
-He did make comments about --
not comments. I
said, "did he say that?"
I absolutely did not say that.
And you said, "yes." And so --
I know that came
out in a conversation
about everyone laying around
over there, not doing anything.
That's not true, either, Darrin.
If I'm being honest,
I feel like I just don't
know what the true story is.
Trust is a big deal out here.
We need to trust each other
because that's all we have.
We only have
each other out here.
Someone betrays my trust
after I give it to them 100%,
it's gone 100%.
They won't ever get it back.
Kim: There was
a breach of trust.
It may seem small,
but it's big out here.
This is new to me.
I don't feel this way.
[Bleep] Look at me.
And phaedra didn't even
like, she didn't
even look up at me.
I don't feel, like,
comfortable, like,
talking and hanging out with you
'cause I feel like you kind of
stabbed me in
the back a little bit
and made me into
something that I'm not
with the only family
that I have out here.
But, like, as of right now, I
just kind of need some space.
For Darrin to twist
my words around
and turn me into the bad guy
makes me want to knock
his [bleep] lights out.
Darrin: I knew he
would call me a liar.
He's not gonna
admit to the group
that he talked
[bleep] about them.
He knows that a loner
out here is a dead man.
Narrator: Next time on
"naked and afraid xl"...
Look at the size
of these lion paws.
It's bigger than my hand.
We got leopards that are
known to hunt humans out here.
Big cats like to pick out the
weakest animals in a herd.
-Oh, my gosh.
-We need a medic, like, now.
Lions. I can hear lions.
[ Lions growling ] I
can hear them coming.
[ Moaning ]
[ Lion roars ]
about a baseball-size rock.
When a big old herd
comes down there again,
I'm jumping out of my blind,
and I'm hitting one of them
and tackling that bitch
like an NFL player.
[ Water buffalo grunts ]
[ Grunts ]
[ Grunts ]
[ Grunts ]
Narrator: In the
drought-stricken s
a group of "naked
and afraid" veterans
are taking on an unthinkable
survival challenge...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
...to endure 40
days and 40 nights
in the most savage
wilderness on the planet.
[ Shouts indistinctly ] Hey!
Narrator: To make it out alive,
they must push their limits,
master their
environment... Oh, my god!
...and survive each other.
Woman: I think its gonna
be tremendously difficult.
Narrator: This is
"naked and afraid xl."
captions paid for by
discovery communications
halfway through
the 40-day challenge,
nine survivalists
are still standing
in the scorching
heat of South Africa,
under constant threat
of deadly predators.
Woman: We are
right in the kill zone.
-Oh, my god.
-Holy [bleep]
Narrator: They've merged
into one group at swati valley
to achieve safety in numbers
but are now desperate
to secure enough protein.
Africa's no joke. It's
definitely beating me down.
Jake: And we cannot
just get by on a few fish
when it's a group of nine.
We need a substantial
source of meat.
Just a piece of advice --
you really should be covering
your feet and your
hands in mud and stuff.
Bitch, please.
Narrator: And
conflicting strategies
are creating tension
within the group.
Ryan: The group that
has been here the longest
are not the best hunters.
So I set snares
where I felt something
big was gonna come down.
It's not gonna get
through this one.
There's a snare right there.
That looks so good.
They're right there.
-[ Gasps ]
-We got a snare. Snare!
-She's in a snare.
-Snare!
Woman: Ryan!
Snare! Ryan!
[ Water splashes ]
-Ryan!
-Yeah.
He's in the snare.
Jake: It's go time for me.
Complete starvation-fueled
Michael Phelps explosion.
-Yeah. He's at the beach.
-Ryan!
Go!
Oh, my [bleep] he's off.
[Bleep] [Bleep]
Damn it.
Snares were set up pretty good.
-Yeah.
-Which one was it?
I had two of them set here.
Second one's gone.
It's gone?
-Is the rope gone?
-Yeah.
Oh [bleep]
So maybe it was
my tie-down point.
This branch right here is gone.
It must have taken it.
Jake: It seems as
though one of the nyala
has gotten caught up in
one of Ryan's foot snares.
However, his tie-off
point was way too weak.
I mean, they're strong.
That's the thing is, like,
we need bases of trees.
Yeah, it's got to
be wrapped around
like a 3-inch-thick green tree.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
Well, working with what I got.
I took it upon myself to utilize
the material that we have.
You know, it wasn't a
failure. It snared the animal.
Yeah, it got away, but it's not
gonna get away a second time.
I got like six, seven more
snares I'm gonna put up there.
Just got to tie them off to
something heavier next time.
When I was a kid, an
old-timer took me out
and taught me
snaring, like, hardcore.
I mean, for a couple years,
I killed hundreds and
hundreds of animal,
like, up to deer size.
I also always, like, put brush
up against my neck snares
so they think that they're
pushing through brush.
[ Sighs ] I'm
gonna go rinse off.
It's a lot easier doing
this by myself yesterday.
Steven: If you don't, you
know, set up the snare right,
it's not gonna work.
It's a big loss. I mean,
that was a lot of meat,
and it really -- it would have
done a lot for everybody.
So we can't make
that mistake again.
[Bleep]
[ Wind gusting ]
[ Fire crackling ]
Super-windy night.
The fire is throwing
coals and little embers
into our hair and
body and burning us.
And it's just kind of not the
funnest in the whole world,
so we're not really
able to fall asleep.
[ Wind howling ]
The wind is whipping.
Sparks flying everywhere.
Luckily there's no rain.
[ Thunder rumbling ]
[ Rain falling ]
Woman: Not gonna be a fun night.
It's early morning on
day 23, and it's miserable.
[Bleep]
[ Thunder crashing ]
I'm really hungry right now,
which does not help these
kind of situations at all.
[ Insects buzzing ]
Last night was a little
rough, to say the least.
We had a pretty steady
rain for most of the night.
You kind of have
to grin and bear it.
Hopefully have a
productive rest of the day
and get a little food and,
um, keep pushing through.
After that nyala got
snared yesterday,
that had to freaking [bleep]
Like, "oh, my god, I got
to get something now."
-Yep.
-So sick of setting snares.
It's gonna pay off
'cause I put a lot of time
and effort into what I do.
I don't know.
I mean, I feel
like at this point,
it's almost worth finding
a different hunting ground
that's completely clean
of smells and [bleep]
Darrin: Yeah, like, I
really want to go back
and try hunting
back at Alpha camp.
I see more animals over
there in the first two hours of day
than I've seen the
whole time I've been here.
Steven: It's like a
freaking zoo over there.
Yeah.
I want to go back to my old camp
just because there's so
much more game there.
100 animals a day come down
to drink there instead of 20 here.
It would be 10 times more
effective over there, I think.
Earlier we can get
big game, the better.
I want the best hunter
in the best location
to secure food for us.
It's a risk, but at this point,
we really don't have any food,
so something's got to be done.
Ryan: Well, how long
you plan on going?
I'd say two days.
If nothing's caught by day 25,
are you both gonna come back?
No matter what, on day 25,
both of us are gonna be back here.
Yeah.
I'm one of those
people that likes
being able to take
care of somebody,
you know, have
people to take care of.
I grew up hunting.
That's what I love to do.
One of my main goals was
to kill an animal with my atlatl.
It's the most primitive
weapon on the planet.
This is my
opportunity right now.
Darrin: We only
have two arrows left.
Just got to get some
bone points ready
if we're gonna go
on a hunting trip.
Kim has a bow, but I have
the best success in this group
with that bow to get an animal.
I have indigenous living skills.
When I was a small child,
I learned to hunt and live off
the land with primitive tools,
to make my own
tools to hunt with.
When you're notching those hot,
you might end up
snapping the whole thing.
Jake: There's a lot
of lions in the den now
as far as skill sets.
Darrin has the most to offer,
as we've been reminded...A lot.
Darrin: Saw two
grooves, not just one.
And never twist your knife
'cause if you get a
crack going down that,
you hit a bone like a rib bone,
instead of it going through,
it'll crack your shaft
back and split it.
Could you not watch me?
You're making me
very nervous right now.
-Oh, sorry.
-Okay, thank you.
[ Laughs ]
Darrin's enthusiasm combined
with his knowledge, you know,
sometimes does come
across as a bit of a know-it-all.
Take this one, too, Steven.
Never put all your
faith in one tool.
Yep.
They're gonna kill each other.
100%.
All right, team.
We will see you in
two days -- day 25.
-See ya guys.
-Bye.
Or earlier with a
massive, delicious carcass.
Ryan: You know, the
hopes are really high
for those twto be successful
and come back with that
big game and that red meat.
It's for us to live off of
for the next few weeks,
maybe all the way to day 40.
May your spear kill
everything it touches.
Yeah.
Stacey: This hunt
is so important
because all of us are starving.
But there's, you know,
active lions constantly
prowling the area.
It's an extremely
dangerous task to take on.
Steven: There's some
fresh [bleep] super fresh.
You noticing how much scat's
on this hillside on this trail?
Yeah, man. And there's
lots of different kinds of it, too.
I mean, there's still lions.
They're probably still out here.
They're probably just
in the shade right now.
Steven: Nothing here is safe.
Our journey from point "a" to
point "b" is always treacherous.
This is one of the few
places on the planet
where half the
animals can kill you.
[ Insects buzzing ]
Holy [bleep]
Would you look at that?
Little dead warthog right there?
There's sign -- lions, leopards.
The threats are real,
and it puts you in your place
real quick, I tell you what.
On day 2, like, right near my
blind, we saw two male lions.
Yeah, I mean, just 'cause
they're nocturnal hunters
doesn't mean they don't
hunt during the day, too.
Yeah.
[ Animal growls ]
Oh, stop. I just
heard something.
On day 2, like, right near my
blind, we saw two male lions.
Yeah, I mean, just 'cause
they're nocturnal hunters
doesn't mean they don't
hunt during the day, too.
Yeah.
Today's hunt day.
Going over the Ridge, gonna
check out some new land.
Hopefully, get to
come back with animals
over our shoulders like cavemen.
[ Animal growls ]
Oh, stop. I just
heard something.
Might be a wildebeest.
-Just keep going.
-Keep your voice down.
[ Bird chattering ]
I think I got a good one.
Jake: Haven't had the
best success with food
the last several days.
Come on, you piece of [bleep]
So, really hoping to
make the most of today,
try to get ourselves
back on track,
'cause you can feel the
energy dropping in the group.
Come on.
Nothing.
Even though our fuel
tanks are emptying,
everybody's still
trying their hardest
to really make this group
as successful as possible.
-Ooh.
-Okay, I'm gonna toss this.
Got it.
Yay, it's happening. Whoo.
We decided that today we
could go and get some cattails
and hopefully harvest enough
to use sort of like a potato.
And we think that
having some starch
will be long-lasting sugar
to keep our energy levels up.
These are cattail tubers.
They're the roots
of the cattail.
Looks, like, just so disgusting.
But all of us are starving.
They're gonna be so good.
Ready? [ Chuckles ]
I think we're good.
Ryan: While Darrin and
Steven are over there,
I think my energy
is best spent here.
I'm just gonna inundate
this entire hillside
in the best spots
with foot snares.
You know, it is just
me, one out of nine,
that really thinks that
these things are gonna work.
I'm determined,
and I'm not giving up.
There's a nyala right there.
It's freaking nuts.
Just showed up to
Darrin and Kim's camp.
Had some of the most
animal activity I've seen yet.
All the animals
come down to water.
You can see where the mud is
all churned up from their hooves.
So they all come from two paths.
They either come from over here
or they come from right here.
My game plan is for me to
take the blind that is enclosed,
where I can shoot a bow from,
and on the other
side of our lake,
there's an open area
with some tall grass
where Steven can duck
down, 'cause he's got an atlatl.
An atlatl takes
more space to throw.
That'd be perfect. I
can even stand up.
I'm gonna go build
up my blind a little bit.
Cool.
When you're in a blind, you
got to position it in the right area
so you're close
enough to a game trail
but not too close that
it's gonna spook anything.
Right in here, I
got my little blind.
When I sit down, basically,
just my eyes are over the top.
I can move around enough to
where I don't make any noise.
I can see Darrin's blind
right across from my spot.
[Bleep] [ Groans ]
Primitive hunting requires
the utmost Patience.
The slightest twitch in a
blind will scare the animals.
Here, no matter where they are,
there is something
trying to kill them,
and they're so on guard.
[ Arrow clatters ]
I can get an atlatl
shot off at an impala.
I couldn't stand up.
I had to do it sitting down,
and I clipped a tree branch,
broke the tip of my atlatl.
It's, like, a huge bummer.
Ryan: These are
wildebeest horns that I found,
and I knew I wanted
to do something with it,
so utilizing a little
bit of the snare wire,
I'm working on making
myself a nice, little headdress.
I've got some high
hopes that my snares
are gonna be
extremely effective today.
Can't wait to watch one of
these nyala get snagged up
and snared for us to have
an abundance of protein.
See the nyala?
They're coming down.
Woman: I feel like they're
way more cautious now.
Yeah, maybe because
they already snared one once
and they're super wary now.
There's one coming
down right there.
Ryan: There's two or
three nyala right now
within 10 feet of
two of my snares,
and they know something's up.
Oh, there's one coming
around to the other snare.
Two feet in front of it --
two feet in front of
that deer is a snare.
Right there -- head down to
the snare, smelling the snare.
All he's got to do is take two
steps forward and he's snagged.
Mother[bleep]
They're leaving.
I don't know how they
know, but they know.
[Bleep]
Stacey: Today we had
another failed attempt
on our snares across the lake.
Had quite a few nyala
come down, sniff out,
and completely go around
some of the snares, so that sucks.
I can't believe that [bleep]
I hope Darrin and Steve
are successful today.
Steven: Today's hunt
is absolutely crazy.
I've seen over 100 animals,
but they're all out of range.
Burned a bunch of calories today
just sitting out
there in the sun.
It's a bummer, man.
What's up, buddy?
Had an atlatl shot.
Broke my tip.
That's tough, dude.
[ Sighs ]
I'm gonna start needing
to get some protein, too.
Mind if I try your blind
tomorrow with the bow?
I'm sorry. I just -- you know.
I want to be hunting
with that bow.
And you've had
the opportunity...
-I know.
-...And I haven't.
I know, but I need to keep
hunting with it, you know?
I'm trying to put food on the
table for everybody, you know?
And we're in an
environment right now
where that's a
feasible operation.
Darrin: He talked up and down
about how good he was with an
and then he gets one shot
off and says it's no good
and he wants the bow.
You know, I tried to teach him
how to make really nice
atlatl dart with a bone point,
and he wouldn't even
listen to my instruction.
I don't understand
where you're coming from.
I don't want to just get
through this challenge, man.
I want to be the guy that's
gonna provide for the group.
It's your call, but... Sorry.
Steven: I don't know
if he's threatened,
but to make me feel
that I'm not good enough,
it really upsets me.
It is what it is, and I'm
stuck here with him right now,
but I'm gonna prove him wrong.
[ Lions roaring ]
I'm gonna keep
this recording night
in case we get
our faces eaten off,
because there is at least two
lions moving around our camp.
[ Lions roaring ]
Hear that?
All we can hear are, like,
sticks breaking around us,
which is -- it's
pretty freaking nuts.
We've heard a roar.
It pierces your soul.
[ Roaring continues ]
I got our death
horn over here, too.
Darrin: Assembled?
Yeah, assembled and ready.
[ Growls ]
[ Growling ]
Darrin: Lions were the closest
they've ever been last night
to this camp --
way closer than they
ever were for me and Kim.
Towards the middle of the night,
it sounded like they
were down at our lake.
You want to go down there,
mud up, and get back in the blind?
I think I've lost 29 pounds.
I do, too, but I know
what my body looks like.
I can see it, and I look gaunt.
So, this porcupine den that
you guys were talking about
and went and smoked out --
if anybody's willing
to take me up there
and show me where it's
at, I'd love to take a look.
Maybe it came back.
We can take you up
there and check it out.
-You ready?
-Mm-hmm.
-All right. Good luck.
-All right, we'll be back.
-Good luck!
-Thanks.
Ryan's constantly
scheming in his mind,
trying to figure
out the next step
in order to get a
kill or to get food.
Ryan: I'm thinking
a porcupine would
it's been my intention to
find an active animal den
and smoke it out and
harvest it for, you know,
a larger meal for the group.
I really hope that there's
something in there.
It would be amazing.
I don't see any fresh
quills or fresh poop.
-Mnh-mnh.
-Hmm.
You know, based on
some of these tracks
and the flies that are
coming out of there,
I don't think this
is a porcupine den.
I think maybe a
warthog's moved in.
Narrator: The South
African warthog
can grow up to 300 pounds
and would yield enough meat
to feed the group for weeks.
Ryan: The warthog
is definitely one
that you can come
face-to-face with.
You know, one
little flip of their tusk,
and they could
really slice into you
and gash you open pretty good.
Catch an artery, and it
could actually kill you.
Okay, well, how do
you want to do this?
Let's game-plan that.
We literally just got
to get, like, rocks.
The bigger the
rocks, the better.
Damn, phaedra, that's huge.
Tons of flies just
came out of there.
That means a lot
of [bleep] in there.
What do you think?
You're the one that
has to stab the thing.
I'll take care of
that part. Okay.
Phaedra: For everybody's sake,
I hope there's a warthog in there.
There you go. Working good.
That's coming right through.
Sweet.
If I was a warthog,
I don't know how I'd be able
to breathe in there right now.
Nope. He's not home.
I think it was a good effort.
Yeah, for sure.
Phaedra: I've been
here for 25 days.
Based on the fact that
we've been here for so long,
we've already kind of
milked this place dry.
Ryan: That means
25 days of traffic,
25 days of human activity,
25 days of fishing and exploring
and dropping human
scent all over this place.
I feel that it's
time to move on.
[ Animals grunting ]
A hunting blind a little ways
up from the lake at the far end
where some trails come together.
[ Rustling ]
Hopefully we get
something today.
I want one of those
yummy, little nyalas.
Steven: I asked Darrin
if I could use the bow,
and he's not giving
it up, so whatever.
I came out here to bag a mammal,
and that's what I'm gonna do,
and I'm gonna work
as hard as I can to do it.
[ Sighs ]
With the hunger,
the fatigue, the heat...
[Bleep] Waiting
game. I'm tired of this
I have to do something
completely different.
I'm gonna get about
a baseball-sized rock.
When a big old herd
comes down there again,
I'm jumping out of my blind,
and I'm hitting one of them
and tackling that bitch
like an NFL player.
[ Thumping ]
Aah
[Bleep] [Bleep] Go!
Holy [bleep]
Darrin: Steven just took
off running after a nyala
with a rock in his hand.
-I mean...
-[ Sighs ]
...that is not good judgment,
and it kind of scares me.
"A," you don't have a
chance to catch them that way.
And "b," you grab
one of those things,
you're gonna get
kicked and clawed up.
Really, what he's doing
is spooking the animals
and making a fool of himself.
I feel like I need to put in as
much time in here as possible
and utilize my skills.
[ Wind howls ]
You know, I gave my
word that we'd be back.
I told everyone we'd be back.
We have all this massive
amount of protein around here,
and we're not utilizing it.
I know, but when we
make a plan as a group,
we're supposed to stick to it.
We're supposed to go back
to camp tomorrow at day 25,
and I'm a man of
my word, you know?
If I said I'm gonna be
back, I'm gonna be back.
We're gonna lose
a whole hunting day.
This is survival.
We haven't eaten in three days.
What are we gonna
do, fish for 14 days?
I mean, that's good
food, and -- it's laziness.
I don't think it's the fact
that he's worried about
not keeping his word.
I honestly think
he's a lazy ass,
because he hasn't done [bleep]
I'm not trying to
do what I want.
I'm trying to do what's
best for the group right now.
I'm really, like,
apprehensive right now
about breaking our word to the
group, you know, 'cause, like...
Why don't you go back?
I know, but if I go back,
I got to take that bow.
Why?
I just want to
make sure that, like,
you don't lose any more of
those arrows on bad shots.
Okay. I've got probably
20-something years
of bow experience, you know?
[Bleep] Credit, man.
Like, give me a little
like, you're making me feel
like I'm a novice out here.
Dude, I watched you [bleep]
chase a nyala with a rock today.
You're right, I did. It
was the end of the day.
That's what I was doing.
I mean, that makes me worry
about your judgment calls.
Oh, my god. You're
being a smartass right now.
And you're
negating my abilities.
But you've had a bow, and
you haven't bagged anything.
-I know.
-So what's with that?
But I've got, like
[bleep] 40 shots off.
Oh, 40 shots? So
that's zero in 40.
Zero in 40.
This is the thing -- I'm
staying here tomorrow,
and I'm staying in
that blind with the bow.
Good luck. Thank you.
You've had 40 shots, and
you haven't killed anything.
You know [bleep]
I know he thinks he's,
like, super survival guy.
Well, I haven't learned
a [bleep] damn thing
from him out here.
All I've heard was
excuses and stories.
I can get the job done myself.
Steven: I finally got the bow.
It's been guarded by Darrin.
He's had 40 shots, and he
hasn't put any food on the table.
And I finally have the
opportunity to use it.
I mean, when you're zero in 40,
it's probably not
equipment error.
It's probably user error.
Darrin: Steven wants to be
the big man and get a big kill.
He's putting me in a dangerous
situation hiking by myself.
Leaves him in a dangerous
situation to stay in by himself.
But as a group, we
made a deal that on day 25
we would come back over
there, and I'm sticking to it.
It's already getting warmer.
Steven: Get to be here alone.
So stoked about today.
This is my bread
and butter right here.
Hopefully today I can prove
that sometimes you
need to pass the torch
and think more about the
group than just yourself.
Already a nyala bull up there.
That's a good sign.
I think we're tapping
out on our resources.
It's been three days
of almost nothing,
which to go from such
extremes is pretty crazy
since we've gone from being
successful to getting skunked.
Yeah.
I think regardless,
when they come back,
we need to think about moving
to Darrin and Kim's old camp.
Ryan: Yeah, I think
it's a good idea to move.
The new opportunities
for figs and dates and nuts
and the new opportunities
for fishing holes.
Exactly.
I think we're all kind of set
for pushing on
from this location.
I feel like our best
bet at this point
is gonna be to try to harvest
Darrin and Kim's old camp.
You know, we need
to get as many fish
and as many turtles out of
there in the next couple days.
Yeah, well, let's hope
for the best for their return.
I think we should
start gearing up
towards making that
move after they get back.
-Good morning, naked people.
-Whoa.
-Hello.
-What's up?
Darrin: No luck so far.
I promised you guys
we'd be back today.
-That was the word to the group.
-Yeah.
And we saw 200
animals yesterday.
Did you guys catch anything
with the hook and line?
No.
So, you guys haven't eaten yet?
No, we haven't
eaten for three days.
Neither have we.
So, we're talking about moving.
-Everyone?
-There's no fish.
-No fish?
-It's dried up at this point.
-Where's Steven?
-He stayed to hunt.
Ryan: Really?
Yeah, Steven would
not come back today.
He insisted he
keep the bow to hunt.
He absolutely
refused to hand it over.
Ryan: You know, I'm not entirely
sure what Steven's reasons are
for staying over there,
refusing to come back,
and refusing to bring
back the bow and arrow,
which is a group item
and a group weapon --
absolutely key to
our success out here.
Steven kind of worried me.
We had a little argument.
At the end of the day, he,
like, got frustrated with his atlatl
and literally, like,
started chasing a nyala
with a rock in his hand.
Like, that's how desperate
he is to make a kill.
Someone making
decisions like that
jeopardizing all
of our safeties.
Kim: We depend on each other,
and when we make a plan that
someone's gonna come back
in a survival
situation, it's pretty big.
And then he says everyone
over here's just lazy
and waiting to survive.
Phaedra: Seriously?
He said that?
Yeah.
But he really said,
"everybody over there's lazy"?
Yeah. Everyone's --
you know, he was like,
"we're just waiting it out."
I'm like, "no, I don't see
anyone over here being lazy."
Jake: Well, if he's
calling us lazy,
might have to talk a
little sense into Steven.
It sounds like that's gonna
be more challenging, then.
Well, I definitely want him
to air his side of the story, too.
I don't want to
just jump the gun.
Jake is the best
person at this point,
and then we can
talk to him as a group.
That's the best way.
Jake: Hopefully
we can talk it out.
We'll see. You know never know.
People are starting to
get really hungry right now,
which does not help these
kind of situations at all.
[ Hissing ]
It's been good to us.
It's been good to the
whole group, honestly.
But it's time to move on.
-Are we ready?
-Yep.
Ryan: So, the plan
is the whole group
is gonna move over to where
Steven is and utilize that camp,
you know, build up some energy,
and the discussion that
needs to happen with Steven
needs to happen as a group.
Jake: When I get to the camp,
I'll go over and have a little
conversation with Steven.
He basically made the
executive decision to take the bow
even though that was
supposed to come back to camp.
I want to hear
what he has to say,
but the bottom line is,
the group have given me
permission to take it back.
[ Animals grunting ]
Narrator: On this
40-day survival quest,
the survivalists earn a group
"naked and afraid xl" rating,
or xlr, which gauges their
progress, skill, and teamwork.
Although the
survivalists collaborated
to catch fish at swati valley...
[Bleep] Yeah. Got one.
Narrator: ...They failed at
snaring and hunting the big game
needed to support the group.
Woman: Oh [bleep] he's off.
Narrator: And now
personal conflicts
are threatening to
tear the group apart.
You're being a
smartass right now.
And you're
negating my abilities.
As a result, the
group's xlr falls to 6.4.

Steven: The buffalo are a
couple thousand pounds.
It's literally a ton of
animal that can crush you.
They don't back
down to anything.
They take on lions.
They take on people.
They're one of the most
aggressive animals out here.
You kind of let them do
their thing, keep your distance,
and hope they
don't mess with you
or they go right through you.
That's better.
[ Whistling ]
[ Bleep ]
Hunting blind's over on
that far left side of the dam,
big bushes down there.
[ Bleep ]
I'm gonna shoot over
there now to talk to Steven.
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
I think it's best that Jake
goes over, talks to Steven,
kind of defuses the
situation a little bit
before we have a
conversation as a group.
Jake: It's not even a "who
to believe" thing for me.
For me, it's more "secure
our weapon for the group"
than anything else.
-How's it going?
-Good, man.
-I didn't expect anybody.
-Yeah.
A conflict at camp that
we've got to get sorted out.
Come on in, buddy.
What's the word?
What's going on?
Darrin came into camp,
and he had mentioned you guys
had a bit of a heated argument.
The plan was to come
back with the bow and arrow,
and I think it rubbed
some people the wrong way
as far as, I guess,
you mentioned
that the group's been
kind of lazy and...
I never said anybody
was being lazy.
Yeah.
You know, it is what it is,
and I think we just
have to take a step back,
think about the group.
I mean, as of right now,
they asked if I could
take the bow and arrow.
Jake came all
this way, you know,
just to basically take
the bow out of my hands.
I'm pretty pissed off right now.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
I'm just trying to put meat
on the table for everybody,
and now I'm the [bleep] bad guy.
Hurts my feelings, man.
I think some words
got turned around,
and we need to nip
this in the bud, I think.
I made an executive
decision yesterday
to kind of stay and hunt.
I never had a chance
to use the bow.
I was really hoping
to get the opportunity
to put food on the table.
I mean, I feel
like I'm a provider.
And that's what I do at home,
and that's what
I try to do here.
But that's not what we
agreed to as a group,
and that's why I left.
When you make a plan, you
stick to the plan no matter what
in these situations. Yeah.
Obviously, Darrin,
I'm -- I'm really --
I can't get into it
with you right now.
Me and Darrin really
got into it yesterday.
He -- he twisted a
lot of words around.
He said that I called you all
lazy and a few other things.
You did say some
remarks to those lines.
You put words in my mouth.
You said, like, you know,
"everyone's laying around when
they should be doing something."
No, I never said that, Darrin.
And like I said, I'm not gonna
do this back-and-forth thing.
I'm sorry you guys got
the wrong impression,
but I feel like I kind
of got ganged up on
and I couldn't defend myself.
I know that I never
said anything derogatory
or down-putting.
But you can take
with it what you want.
I would hope that you all's
impression of me by now
would be that I'm looking
for the benefit of the group.
He said that we
are lazy over here.
When I asked at
least three times
and you repeated,
"yes, that's what he said,"
and you're saying,
"absolutely not.
-I didn't say that."
-He did make comments about --
not comments. I
said, "did he say that?"
I absolutely did not say that.
And you said, "yes." And so --
I know that came
out in a conversation
about everyone laying around
over there, not doing anything.
That's not true, either, Darrin.
If I'm being honest,
I feel like I just don't
know what the true story is.
Trust is a big deal out here.
We need to trust each other
because that's all we have.
We only have
each other out here.
Someone betrays my trust
after I give it to them 100%,
it's gone 100%.
They won't ever get it back.
Kim: There was
a breach of trust.
It may seem small,
but it's big out here.
This is new to me.
I don't feel this way.
[Bleep] Look at me.
And phaedra didn't even
like, she didn't
even look up at me.
I don't feel, like,
comfortable, like,
talking and hanging out with you
'cause I feel like you kind of
stabbed me in
the back a little bit
and made me into
something that I'm not
with the only family
that I have out here.
But, like, as of right now, I
just kind of need some space.
For Darrin to twist
my words around
and turn me into the bad guy
makes me want to knock
his [bleep] lights out.
Darrin: I knew he
would call me a liar.
He's not gonna
admit to the group
that he talked
[bleep] about them.
He knows that a loner
out here is a dead man.
Narrator: Next time on
"naked and afraid xl"...
Look at the size
of these lion paws.
It's bigger than my hand.
We got leopards that are
known to hunt humans out here.
Big cats like to pick out the
weakest animals in a herd.
-Oh, my gosh.
-We need a medic, like, now.
Lions. I can hear lions.
[ Lions growling ] I
can hear them coming.
[ Moaning ]
[ Lion roars ]
