Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 2, Episode 4 - Too Many Chiefs - full transcript

The Survivalists approach the halfway point of their brutal challenge. With starvation and sickness worse than ever they must come together to help one another, but the battle for Alpha Male distracts them from their strategy and ...

Darrin: Hunger is
taking its toll on me.

My body is shutting down.

Alyssa: Just
watching the nyalas.

There's bunch of
them by our snares.

Steven: That looks so good.

Kim: It's like cheeseburgers
with legs -- so hungry.

[ Gasps ] We got a snare.

Holy [bleep]

He's at the beach.

Ryan! Go!

Oh, my [bleep]

Narrator: In the
drought-stricken s

a group of "naked
and afraid" veterans

are taking on a unthinkable
survival challenge...

[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!

...to endure 40
days and 40 nights

in the most savage
wilderness on the planet.

[ Shouts indistinctly ] Hey!

Narrator: To make it out alive,

they must push their limits,

master their
environment... Oh, my god!

...and survive each other.

Woman: I think its gonna
be tremendously difficult.

Narrator: This is
"naked and afraid xl."

narrator: After 17 days

of unrelenting heat
and deadly predators,

South Africa has claimed
three elite survivalists

as its first victims.

I need a medic.

Narrator: And now
only nine remain.

Woman: Anyone
could go out at any time.

Narrator: In tsonga basin,
Kim desperately needs protein

to fend of the ravaging
effects of tick-bite fever.

This could easily turn into
a life-threatening situation.

Narrator: But Darrin has
been unable to provide.

In pondo ravine, angel's
exit has left Ryan and Steven

more vulnerable to
wildlife and each other.

If you could stop
laughing in my face,

I'd appreciate it.

Steven: If we were in a bar,

I'd have knocked
his [bleep] teeth out.

Narrator: And in
the lush swati valley,

a deadly predator
struck close to camp.

Man: Holy [bleep]

Woman: We are
right in the kill zone.

Narrator: ...Sending
part of the group

on a dangerous scouting
mission for more people.

-Oh, my god!
-Holy [bleep]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Woman: Holy [bleep]

Man: That's crazy.
That thing was so close.

God, I can't believe

we had a leopard that
close to us, you guys.

You could hear it running.

Phaedra: The thing after
us 'cause we took its kill.

It's good that we
have three of us here.

Two of us have Spears.

Jake: Yeah, I think there's a
feeling of safety in numbers.

So at this point,

I feel like scouting for other
people can be beneficial.

There's a little
something we can follow.

Kim: I'm starving,

and I've actually
been thinking about

whether or not I'm
gonna make it at this rate,

because it's just so
extreme here in every way.

We should be quiet.
Maybe we can hear voices.

Hello?!

[ Echoing ] Hello?!

Hello! Hi! Hello!

[ Cheering ]

Whoo!

Ayooo!

We're coming down!

I'm really excited. I think
this can be really good.

I mean, they could have
totally different resources.

There's more people.
There's more energy.

More bodies might make
hunting a little more difficult.

Darrin: The negatives
of a group dynamic are

people are gonna bicker,
people are gonna cry,

there's gonna be people that
aren't gonna pull their weight.

You know? That sucks.

Hello?!

How's it goin'? I'm Jake.

-Kim.
-Nice to meet you, Kim.

-Nice to meet you, Jake.
-[ Laughs ]

Oh, nice to meet you.

-Hi.
-Hi.

Kim: It just felt so good
to see such new faces

and to be able to have

this whole new culture
added to our group.

Jake: You just walk
down this Ridge right here.

There's a leopard
probably like 35 yards.

Holy [bleep] yeah.

Darrin: The bigger
group you have,

the less a predator
wants to mess with you.

Yeah, there's definitely a
feeling of safety in numbers.

How has your place been?

Kim: I haven't really
eaten since day 7, so...

We have a lot of trees
surrounding the area

where the animals come
to drink, so you could hide.

You guys got big -- lots
of animals over there, too,

like big game?

Jake: Yeah. Yeah, a fair amount.

It's nice. I mean,
it's a beautiful spot.

Oh, we have a fishing net, too.

Oh, nice.

I haven't even actually
seen a fish in our lake.

Jake: Kim and Darrin seem like
they have had a really tough go

the last couple weeks.

Hopefully, we can get
them in an environment

where the possibilities
for food are lot greater

than where they were,

and we're gonna have some
great success as a team together.

You guys got more
people over there,

or it's just you guys now?

-There's two girls.
-Sweet.

It's not -- it's not
a bad trek at all.

We're just on the
other side of that Ridge.

The water's beautiful,
really lush around it.

So, I mean, yeah,
turtles, snakes, lizards...

Sounds like we're
all going that way.

Darrin: My concerns and worries

for the second half
of this challenge

is just finding enough
food for everyone,

especially, you know, the
whole group wants to move,

and I just don't know what
the food resources are.

You know, it's gonna suck

if we get to a place where
we don't have a lot of food.

You guys ready to check it out?

-Yeah, let's go.
-Cool.

Narrator: At swati valley,

Stacey has stayed
behind with tawny,

who is still ailing
from tick-bite fever.

The blondtourage.

[ Chuckling ] Blondtourage.

Okay.

Tawny: At least I'm
feeling slightly hunan today.

I'm gonna try not go too hard

because I don't
want to backtrack

in my progress
of feeling better.

But it's good to be upright
and not wanting to die.

Stacey?

What the heck is that?

Oh, my gosh.

Let me smell.

-It smells amazing.
-I know.

Sure it's safe?

It looks like it's
from another planet.

Stacey: Anytime you're
eating something out here,

you're taking that chance
that it's gonna be poisonous.

But, you know, we're
malnourished and...

It don't know. We'll
see what happens.

Pretty good?

Mm-hmm.

We lost angel today,
and that upset me.

With just me and Ryan,

you know, there's not gonna
be a middle man anymore.

I think angel definitely had
in purpose being in our group.

Absolutely.

I mean... We all do.

You know, Ryan -- I
don't know if it's just,

you know, kind of the
military in him and stuff,

but I feel like he needs to tell
people what to do all the time.

It's just gonna build
up and build up,

and then before you know
it, it's gonna be a disaster.

I don't know.

He was just, like,
a nice balancer.

It's very important.

Yeah.

Ryan: What's going on
here with just me and Steven,

I have feeling
it's it gonna suck.

[ Flies buzzing ]

Jake: Holy [bleep]
there's the sun.

Instaburn.

Narrator: The steep,
four-mile hike b

offers little shade
from the midday sun,

which can raise the
temperature of the rocky ground

to over 120 degrees.

Alyssa: It's almost like
it was a rescue mission

of going there to
bring them back here

and make sure that
everyone is okay,

and we're creating
a bigger group

to take care of each other.

Darrin: You guys rock
doing this twice today.

Jake: As the groups expand,

the thing is, yes, there's
more helping hands,

but there's also a need
for more resources.

I mean, it's a bit of a gamble,

but to me, it's the only option.

Stacey: I think it's coming.

[ Vomiting ]

[ Vomiting continues ]

Well, that lovely wild cucumber

was either, like, too
strong or too acidic or...

Just one roll of the dice

with that wild cucumber that I
ate because I was famished...

Tawny: The
bitterness of the fruit

to somebody who has a
completely empty stomach,

you just can't eat
that kind of stuff.

So it's absolutely
taught us a lesson.

We just threw up
in the perimeter.

We probably shouldn't
tell the rest of the gang

that we did.

Darrin: Oh, my god,
like, that's amazing.

-Right?
-Nice, huh?

-Like it?
-Nice.

Darrin: Yeah, this lake's so
much more alive than our lake.

My first feeling was wow,
like, this place is way greener,

so much more vegetation.

So there's gonna be a
lot more life, you know?

Where's there's
water, there's life.

I threw up so much bile

that it burned the
inside of my throat.

Jake: Tawny and Stacey?

Oh, we brought
you some presents.

Oh, my god.

-Hello.
-How's it going?

-How are you?
-Good.

-I'm tawny.
-I'm Kim.

-Nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you, tawny.

Hello. I'm Darrin.
Nice to meet you.

Hi, Darrin.

Kim: It's just a relief.

Like, I've been having a
hard time the past two days,

just like, how the
hell are the two of us

going to pull this off?

And to just come here and know

that I don't have to pull 50%
of the workload anymore,

it's just nice to
be able to breathe.

Night watch is gonna
be an adventure.

Yeah.

So, you know, now
that angel's gone,

we were doing one on, two off,

might as well just make
it an even two and two.

Yep.

We're gonna have a
pretty tough night watch

with just the two of us --
two hours on, two hours off.

Ryan: After eight years
in the marine corps,

I'm very familiar
with fire watch.

It's not just watching the fire.

It's also making sure

that those dangers that are
lurking out around our camp,

don't come in and snatch
us in the middle of the night.

[ Groans ] [Bleep]

And I just don't know how
much I trust Steven's ability

to, um, stay up for
two hours at a time.

Something could easily come
in and grab one of us by the foot.

A hyena or a big cat
or something like that,

and drag us out like
that, and we'd be gone.

[ Animal howls ]

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Animal chattering ]

[ Animals howling ]

Woman: I heard something growl.

We are right in the kill zone.

Darrin: Just got to be
super careful down here.

[ Animals bellowing ]

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Animals growling ]

Just kind of sit
here at the door

with a spear pointed outward.

[ Animal growling ]

[ Exhales deeply ]

[ Animal growls ]

[ Insects chirping ]

I didn't sleep last night.

Yeah.

That was brutal last night.

Kim: Did you guys
hear the hyenas?

Is that what that
weird noise was?

That weird laugh?

Yeah. Yeah.

I'd say the hyena was
maybe 30, 40 yards last night.

Just feel really
nauseous right now.

All my lymph glands are
really swollen across my neck,

and I just have the shivers.

Throughout the night, I
started feeling way sicker,

and this morning I've
been feeling really sick.

Just the feeling nauseous part

makes it difficult to be
able to get up and help.

Darrin: Half the people in this
camp have tick fever, it seems l

you know, it's like
Russian roulette out here.

Like, eventually, you're
gonna catch the bullet.

Narrator: The South
African bont tick

numbers in the tens of thousands

and Burrows under the skin

of any warm-blooded
animal that brushes past it.

As it sucks blood
from below the skin,

it passes infectious
enzymes into the bloodstream.

Phaedra: Well, the
body aches and stuff,

and tightness in my neck.

You'll -- you'll feel
better really soon.

Don't worry.

Jake: A little scary,
to say the least.

It seems like it's working
its way through our group.

This morning alone, I
found more embedded in me.

Three on my penis...
One on my eye.

This feeling like
it's a matter of time.

I haven't gotten tick fever
yet. Ah, I hope I don't.

Narrator: Without
food to strengthen

the unpredictable infection

can linger for days
or even weeks.

Ryan: I'm feeling the effects

of the lack of sleep
from last night.

Woke up a few times

contemplating whether
or not, you know,

can I trust this
person beside me?

And out here, with the
amount of dangers out here,

that's just not good.

So, that mountaintop
right over there

is where I'm headed.

Trying to get a good
view of the north,

see if I can see campfire,

and I'm looking for a sign of
other people camping out here.

I'm wanting more people
for him to connect with

and for me to connect with
so it's not just the two us...

And what do I see?

Something I've been
looking for since day 2.

That's aloe.

The heat out here and the
sun is absolutely excruciating.

So that's gonna feel
so good on my skin.

Narrator: In addition to
soothing burns and cuts,

the clear, gel-like insides of
the aloe Vera leaf are edible

and deliver hundreds of vitamins
and helpful enzymes to the body.

[ Grunts ]

Should pop up from the root.

Whew!

Look at that.

So I finally crest the top,

and I'm coming over to
see uncharted territory.

Wow.

Damn, it's so lush and green
on this side of the mountain.

We've been living
in poverty over there.

And I see camp smoke
from another group right there.

This is one happy
guy right here.

We are making
our trek out of here.

-This is the mountain we're on.
-Okay, I got ya.

So I went up to here
and looked down.

From the top of here
looking down, right by --

looks like a water
source here --

I could see camp smoke.

Smoke? Okay, cool.

So there's a group.

This is a serious journey.

This is like kind
of a valley area

all the way down this
side of the mountain, right?

Yeah.

So, we're moving.

[ Screeching ]

Are you feeling it?

No. I just don't feel good.

I get really frustrated
when I feel sick.

Do you need help?

No, it's okay, but thank you.

Seriously, thank you.

Oh, please.

Well, feel better.
I'm gonna go fish.

Thank you.

Phaedra: As a mother
with a 6-year-old son,

I'm nurturing individual.

So, I don't enjoy
getting help from others.

My last challenge in India,

being sick was probably
the hardest thing to overcome.

-What are you feeling?
-I'm so nauseous.

I just feel sick. It's okay.

I have just so much more
to offer than what I've shown.

I am so much stronger.

And it's not fair

for Jake to have to do
everything all the time.

Jake: Super low energy day.

I'm starting to black
out every time I stand up.

'Cause he's like the
hardest worker out here.

He's the one that gets up

and if fire needs
to be put on the fire,

gets all the water.

He's the one that does
everything, and it's not fair.

Jake: There's definitely

maybe a little bit of
extra pressure today.

Kim and Darrin, they
need some nourishment,

something to fuel their bodies
to be able to hunt and fish.

So it'd be really nice to be
able to give them a meal or two.

Phaedra: It's awesome
having more numbers,

but more numbers mean, you
know, you have to bring in more food,

you have to pull your weight.

Got one.

[Bleep] Yeah.

At least Kim and Darrin
will get to eat tonight,

which makes me
so freakin' happy.

If I don't get anything
else for the rest of the day,

there's that.

But I'm definitely
gonna keep trying.

I got Kim and Darrin a
little welcome present.

Holy [bleep] buddy.

Do you have fish?

Yeah. You two guys have it.

-Thank you.
-You're welcome.

Welcome to the lion pride.

Thanks, brother.

Darrin: Jake just
brought us a fish.

You know, like,
haven't eaten in days,

and now I got a fish to eat.

It was awesome.
I was so excited.

I can't wait to
watch you guys eat.

Today, it was day
11 since we ate.

Jake: The joy that I just got
from giving those two a fish

was more joy than
I'd ever experienced

actually eating a fish.

So that was a great feeling.

Kim: So freaking awesome.

Tastes amazing.

Ryan: We're going
on a epic trek --

naked, with all
our gear, barefoot.

Barefoot.

Freakin' conquistadors.

This is Africa,
and we are alone.

This is really the
toughest climb right here.

You got to carry a
20-pound iron-cast skillet

basically on top of a mountain
where there might be lions.

Every plant has a Thorn
on it. Every rock is sharp.

So it's scary.

[ Twig snaps ]

[ Groans ]

Freakin' thorns.

That was good one.

[ Groaning ]

I got it all.

Pain is weakness
leaving the body.

I'm freakin' dying in the sun.

I can feel it on my
back and my shoulders.

Where's the aloe?

I'm not gonna lie.
I don't I dropped it.

Ryan: How's it
fall out of the pot?

Yeah, I have no
idea how it feel out.

No way.

Yeah.

Happened way back there.

You didn't notice it?

I have no idea, but it's
not in there anymore.

Yeah, yeah.

That happened.

[Bleep]

Steven's lost the
only aloe I had found.

There is no respect
on Steven's part.

Right now, I'm looking
forward to a new group.

Holy [bleep] did you see that?

No [bleep] way.

We got a [bleep] damn puddle.

-Oh, my god.
-There's a [bleep] lake.

[ Whistles ]

Holy [bleep] did you see that?

No [bleep] way.

We got a [bleep] damn puddle.

-Oh, my god.
-There's a [bleep] lake.

[ Whistles ]

-Did you hear that?
-Yes, I heard that.

That sounded like
a human whistle.

[ Whistle in distance ]

-Hello!
-Hey!

-Whoo!
-Aaah!

-Oh, my god.
-Yay!

-Sounded...
-I'm hearing like...

-I'm hearing like everybody.
-...Four, five people.

[ Cheering ]

I hear a bunch of chicks.

We're all here waiting!

Coming down to the water!

Oh, my god.

You got your dream.

Alyssa: I think when
you're smaller group,

it's a lot harder to be
in this environment.

And with more people,

not even, like, the
physical items they bring,

but the experience
that they bring,

that's just gonna help us.

[ Cheering ]

How do my teeth
look? Are mine scary?

-No. Yours are perfect.
-Cool.

-How's my hair look?
-You're so funny.

[ Laughter ]

Oh, I see them. I see them.

[ Cheering ]

-Oh, my god.
-Hi.

-Oh, yeah!
-Oh, my god!

Ryan: We met up with
seven other people.

The energy is
really high right now,

but I don't see anything

that's gonna hold
this tribe back.

-Hey!
-Hi.

Tick fever, man.

Yeah. Have you guys gotten it?

No. I got bit by a tick,
but no fever from it.

[ Laughs ]

Everyone's stoked that
we're all here together,

and we're building a community.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

It is nice having some
additional males in camp,

I mean, just for some
of the heavy lifting

and stuff like that.

It's just a nice kind of
healthy balance now.

We got the four
guys, five girls.

I think it's gonna
make for a great group.

Guys, we're finally a tribe.

[ Cheering ]

It's basically the
end of day 18, and...

Look where I'm at --

an oasis in the
middle of South Africa.

I can't wait to sleep tonight.

This'll be the first night

we don't have to do two
hours on, two hours off.

I can get just some
adequate sleep,

and I'm super stoked about that.

[ Insects chirping ]

Jake: We're all safely
in our home for the night.

Um, with nine of us
living of off this camp,

it's [bleep] ridiculous.

-It's so cozy.
-Is everyone comfortable?

-No.
-Not really.

Jake: There isn't much space.

It's super
uncomfortable sleeping.

-Watch out.
-Excuse me.

Is my butt too
much in your face?

A little bit.

I'm trying to keep my distance.

-Ow!
-Sorry.

Stacey: Okay, diary cam.

We're all sitting by the fire,

and there are so many testicles
flying around in our shelter.

I mean, everywhere you
look, there's some pinched-off,

stretched-out,
goofy-looking testicles.

That is all. Good
night. [ Smooches ]

It is our first night
together as a tribe,

so I'm pretty excited.

[ Farts ]

Stacey, what did you do?

[ Laughter ]

Just kidding.

That was Alyssa.

All right, talk tomorrow.

Jake: We've got to
adjust the shelter today.

That was brutal last night.

I was up in the
thorns, too, you know?

I was in the pile of firewood.

Actually, once I
moved to this corner,

that's just the worse.

Oh, for sure.

We are getting ready to do
some renovations to our shelter.

We're gonna blow
out this back wall.

It's a nice-sized space,

but we're really
getting cramped.

It would be nice for everybody
to have an equal-sized spot,

sleep equally well.

So we're busting out the wall.

Alyssa: I think
in a bigger group,

one leader is really gonna help.

Jake is our lion pride leader,

and he's got so much experience.

He takes care of everyone.

If you have a y-stick,
you can go for it.

As far as leadership roles go,

I know to me, it's
not that important.

To me, it's more about
success and how we get there.

But there's a lot of
lions in the den now.

I'm about to get a bunch of
real leafy foliage branches

just to kind of put on top.

That's the middle? Pretty
much where your pot is?

Yeah. That's what I'm thinking.

Then build a diameter around it.

-Let's do it.
-To the left of that.

Most important thing right now,

perimeter fence with
a fire in the middle.

I can already tell the man vibe.

Stacey: I think everybody's
trying to figure out

what they should be doing,

because there's so
many more people here

and so many more
people, like, working.

And so, there's way
many too many chiefs

and not enough Indians.

Oh, my god!

I'm sorry.

-Is that boiled?
-It's boiled.

Yeah, I'm gonna move
this into the shelter

so it's out of the way.

Ryan: In such a large group --
we've got nine people out here.

But out here, when you're
sharing these water sources

with dozens of animals,
elephants and warthogs,

and, you know, their
feces are in there,

and they're bathing in there,

and there's ticks
and mosquitoes,

we're gonna have to a have
a constant cycle of water --

literally have a pot of
boiling water on all the time.

If it's not boiling,

it's off the fire
and it's cooling.

[ Belches ]

[Bleep]

That's not funny.

You drank from that one?

Jake: Oh, my god.
Are you serious?

Phaedra: There is
bacteria in that water

that just could
make you super sick.

The animals, they're
peeing and pooping in there.

[Bleep]

I just drank like a ton of it.

Tawny: Phaedra accidently
drank some water that was uncured,

and it's, you know,
obviously really dangerous.

A medical tap-out
would be devastating.

-I'd go throw up.
-I would throw it up, yeah.

Ryan: Oh, I feel so bad.

I was talking, and didn't even
realize what she was doing.

She's already
had tick-bite fever.

She's already...
Steven: Yeah. Poor girl.

[ Vomiting ]

[ Phaedra vomiting ]

So, phaedra just drank,

um, a bunch of water that
had not been boiled yet.

[ Coughs ]

Alyssa: There's just
a ton of bacteria in it,

so it's potentially
very dangerous.

We got to come up
with a new system.

Woman: "Do not drink,"
like some kind of signal.

Put a stick on it

or tie a piece of grass
around the top maybe.

You know? Something
simple like that.

Darrin: Those lids
played musical lids.

Phaedra: It's not my fault.

Like, that's not how we've
been doing water here.

Every time we get
done boiling water,

we put it on the side, and
that's just how you know.

It's never dirty water
mixed with good water.

And it's being done differently

because, you know, we
have new people in the group.

Yeah, I told, like, every
person when I left here --

I think everybody but
her -- don't touch that.

If I'm sick tonight,
if I've got diarrhea,

then, like, that's -- like,
that's my fate in this.

I hope that she
got it all up, at least.

Ryan: Apparently,
this is one of the spots

where mostly big
game comes down.

I think snaring opportunity's
gonna be much bigger down here

than they were
at my last location.

Being in a big group,
there's so many people.

We need to be able to harvest
that big game and that red meat

or it's not gonna work
out, and people will tap out.

All these, you know, hoof prints

coming down to drink
in this one location.

They're coming down
right through here.

In such a large group,
people can get complacent.

I don't think everyone,

you know, has the
internal drive that I have

and the will of my spirit.

But, I don't know,
sometimes all it takes

is one person to sort of
step up and start moving,

and then other people
will follow the lead.

Jake: Yeah, no. That
placement's perfect.

Alyssa had mentioned

that she had already had
some plans for snaring,

so the two of us are
gonna work together

to set some snares up.

Narrator: To set
the foot snares,

Jake and Alyssa use
paracord and 50-Gauge wire,

two of the group's collective
personal survival items.

It doesn't have
to be super tight.

So, right now, we're
twisting the wire

so that it makes
it a lot stronger.

Instead of just
having one wire here,

when it catches, it
will have two wires.

That just doubles the strength.

And so, I'll just braid it.

They'll walk
through it and be like,

"oh, you know,
this is just so strong

I'm gonna walk through it."

"Just put my little antlers
right through here...

And then panic."

[ Laughter ]

Hey, Jake.

Setting that snare
and blind up there now?

Yeah, we're gonna do a couple.

You should really --
just a piece of advice --

you really should be covering
your feet and your hands

in mud and stuff.

I mean, the snares and the blind

are just gonna have
your scent all over it.

Jake: I'm definitely a
little bit unsure about Ryan.

Right now, with the
way our group works,

I don't feel like it necessarily
needs somebody screaming,

"I'm a leader."

You don't always need one
person telling everybody what to do,

and, yes, he's probably
threatened a little bit by me.

I mean... Ryan:
Everything you touch

is just gonna have
your scent on it.

At least, like, dunk
it all in the water or --

the rope's in mud
-- kind of muddy.

I mean, just saying.
That's what I would do.

Jake: Bitch, please. That
looks pretty [bleep] good.

Yeah.

Nice.

Darrin: I don't really have a
personal connection to anyone.

But at the same time,

everyone knows I have
the most hunting experience

and the most primitive
survival experience.

So, I definitely feel pressure

to get some food
for these people.

And the animals here are wary.

I mean, there's
lions and leopards

hunting them
nonstop, day and night,

and they know that
they're on the menu here,

and they don't take chances.

There's so many people
here, the game's moving away.

He smelled me.

Ah.

All right.

[ Chuckles ]

I don't know what they
were gonna do with this.

Set up a whole
nother snare with that

for a nyala or impala.

The group that has
been here the longest

are not the best hunters,

so I took it upon
myself and I set snares

where I felt something
big was gonna come down.

That's like the perfect spot,
the perfect step-down spot.

You got to get
your scent off of it.

Need a couple bigger y's.

It's not gonna get
through this one.

He wants to be the leader.

I know, and that worries me.

Alyssa: I think that
in this group situation,

you can already tell that
surviving with nine other people

is a challenge in itself.

Ryan: I set four ankle
snares down two main paths.

Now I'm gonna go sit on
the other side of the lake

and watch dinner
walk down the hill.

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Fire crackling ]

[ Thunder crashing ]

It's [bleep] raining.

[ Thunder continues ]

Holy [bleep]

Narrator: On this
40-day survival quest,

all groups earn a "naked
and afraid xl" rating,

or xlr,

which gauges their
progress, skill, and teamwork.

Hammered by the historic
South African drought

afflicting the region,

the groups have wandered
far, searching for resources,

and have now merged
into one mega-group

at the oasis of swati valley.

[ Cheering ]

Oh, my god.

Narrator: Though
they've initially struggled

with cooperation and leadership,

the mega-group hopes to find
strength and safety in numbers.

Their first team xlr
results in a score of 7.6.

on "naked and afraid xl,"

[ Rain falling ]

Narrator: An
intense thunderstorm

has swept in from the east,

exposing the
survivalists of swati valley

to a 20-degree
drop in temperature

and deadly lightning strikes.

[ Thunder crashes ]

We're sitting in...Dirt.

And we're all wet and we stink.

And this is...Miserable.

Storm. Massive storm.

So now, I'm laying
in wet, damp hay,

and I was such good sleep.

Every one's wide awake,
trying to stay warm by the fire.

It's hard to sleep when it's
constantly pouring on you.

Um... It's not fun.

Try to keep the fire going,

and that's about all you can do.

This rain storm's really
bringing this challenge

to a whole nother
level of misery.

[ Thunder crashes ]

I just don't know what to do.

Besides sit here
and just shiver.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

And think about tapping out.

Jake: It is day 21.

It's a big day.

I mean, 21 days out here.

To know how far we've come
and how far we have to go still,

it's a lot to think about.

Ohh.

Phaedra: I had a
pretty awful headache.

Um, but, honestly,

I feel like all my aches
and stuff are still there,

but my head is
starting to feel better.

So, I'm just barely
getting over it.

Kim: This place
is hard. It's all hard.

Africa's no joke.

[ Sniffles ]

It's definitely beating me down.

[ Voice breaking ] And...

I'm getting pretty
tired of suffering.

Tawny: Definitely at our lowest.

On the typical "naked
and afraid" challenge,

day 21 you get to go
home and shower and eat.

And on this challenge, I
still have 19 days to go.

So, it's a hard pill
to swallow, for sure.

I was just kind of worried about
how intense it feels right now.

-The hunger?
-Yeah.

Darrin: I've been
here for like three days,

and I'm feeling worse now.

The hunger is
taking its toll on me.

The lack of energy coming in,

like, you know,
there's no plant life.

We're in a severe drought.

All the trees that should've
been fruiting right now --

their berries are withering
up, they're not ripening.

You know, like, my
body is shutting down

and telling me no, you know?

And that's kind of scary.

Steven: There's
nine people here,

and the human
dynamic is a lot harder

when there's a lot of
voices and a lot of ideas.

And it's stressful.

Like, I mean, I'm
Steven Lee hall, Jr.,

and we all know I'm
kind of a big deal, but...

...party can go out in the woods

and get food for nine people.

And daily.

So, we need to step it up.

Oh.

Is that a water buffalo
or a wildebeest?

That's a nyala buck.

Do you know how
much jerky that is?

I can't even fathom.

That is a copious
amount of jerky.

Delicious, awesome tenderloin.

It's like cheeseburgers
with legs.

And there's a snare right there.

There's two if he
goes straight that way,

and there's two if he
goes the other way.

He's huge.

There's a nyala
female right there.

That looks so good.
They just keep coming.

It's like a buffet over there.

Alyssa: I'm just
watching the nyalas.

There's a bunch of
them by our snares.

They're within 5 feet
of our snares right now,

walking on the paths
directly next to it.

And I really hope
that we get one.

Dude, if that catches...
They're right there.

[ Gasps ] We got a snare!

-Snare!
-He's in the snare?

-Ryan!
-Yep.

He's in the snare! Do
you have your knife?

Damn.

Jake: It's go time for me --

complete starvation-fueled,
Michael Phelps explosion.

Holy [bleep]

He's at the beach.

Ryan! Go!

Oh, my [bleep]

Narrator: Next time on
"naked and afraid xl"...

Jake: We cannot just
get by on a few fish

when it's a group of nine.

Go!

Oh, my god! You're
being a smartass right now.

No, I'm being -- you're
negating my abilities.

Darrin: And then he
says everyone over here

is just lazy and
waiting to survive.

-Seriously? He said that?
-Yeah.

I absolutely did not say that.

Steven: For Darrin to
twist my words around

makes me want to knock
his [bleep] lights out.
