Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 2, Episode 2 - Man on Fire - full transcript
On the drought-stricken plains of South Africa, the remaining survivalists enter the second week of their brutal 40-day challenge. A lack of water leads one group to venture off to find others and another group goes hunting again ...
[ Birds chirping ]
Clarence: I'm
tripping out over here.
[ Exhales ]
[ Exhaling sharply ]
I need a medic.
Narrator: In the
drought-stricken s
a group of "naked
and afraid" veterans
are taking on an unthinkable
survival challenge...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
...to endure 40
days and 40 nights
in the most savage
wilderness on the planet.
[ Shouts indistinctly ] Hey!
To make it out alive,
they must push their limits,
master their
environment... Oh, my god!
...and survive each other.
Woman: I think it's gonna
be tremendously difficult.
Narrator: This is
"naked and afraid xl."
six days ago, 12 survivalists
began their challenge
in four separate camps.
At scorching tsonga basin,
the threat of African predators
has become all too real...
Carrie: Holy [bleep]
...forcing one of
the survivalists
to quit the challenge
and tap out.
All I'm, like, thinking
right now is it's just --
it's really overwhelming for me.
Narrator: In pondo ravine...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
Go! [Bleep]
...Africa bites back
as the all-male trio struggles
to put meat on the table.
Dude, he ran through
that like it was nothing.
In the green swati valley,
the all-female trio
has found a lush camp,
but Africa's penetrating heat
has left them exhausted
and dehydrated.
[ Vomiting ]
And at Sotho gorge, a bitter
clash over survival strategies
has boiled over into hostility.
Clarence: Survival situation
-- maybe it's easy for you guys
it's not for me.
You can't drink [bleep] water,
you are not gonna make it.
If I can't move to another water
source, I'm not gonna make it!
That's the stage I'm
at. So I'm gonna go.
Clarence: I want to
leave this location... right
I currently, right
now, as we speak,
think we have zero days left.
Oh, this is gross water.
The water has got poop in it.
The water is
straight-up filthy here.
The water's so shallow, I
can barely dip the pot in.
We have to get out
of here very quickly,
or we're gonna
die of dehydration.
If I have to leave on
my own, I'll do that.
My father taught me growing
up, if there's a man in the gutter,
you reach your hand down
and you help that man up.
When that man tries to
pull you down into the gutter,
you got to let go.
Guys, that water's really low.
I could barely fill up the pot.
Jake: Yeah, that's
like half a pot. Yikes.
I'd like to go to a
fresh water source --
so, a different water source, a
more abundant water source.
That's all I want, is water.
But if you want
me to stop bitching
about the water and
the heat, I can do that.
Stacey: I'm not surprised that
Clarence has reached his breaking po
I'm feeling the effects
of heat exhaustion.
We are right here.
That's our watering hole.
Clarence: Yeah. Okay.
And each day, the
water's gonna get
thicker and denser and grosser.
I feel like Clarence
might be right.
It's time to leave.
Well, I say we just
crush it, seize the day.
But even though
there's water on a map,
with the drought that
they've been having,
it could be completely dry.
There's no guarantee.
I can't believe that we've been
drinking from that for a week.
I just think about all
the possible things
that could go wrong.
We're not out here
in hiking boots.
We're out in the
middle of Africa.
It's not gonna be
a walk in the park.
Okay, this is gonna be, like,
hellacious thorns
through here, guys, so...
Got to find water.
That's all there is to it.
[ Birds chirping ]
Narrator: In swati valley,
phaedra, Alyssa, and tawny
have not eaten
for over five days
and continue to suffer
from sleepless nights
in Africa's debilitating heat.
We need to take more trips
to the water -- like, together.
I think that's a big part of
the problem from yesterday.
Alyssa: Yeah.
It's getting too hot.
Mm-hmm.
So, last night was real rough.
We had worked really
hard in the sun yesterday
and ended up getting
kind of heat exhaustion
and blistering up.
Tawny: We're
definitely at our lowest.
We haven't had food yet,
so basically water's
gonna be our food
until we get the
fishing thing figured out.
Whoa.
Phaedra: I've lived in
Alaska a lot of my life,
and fishing is a
big part of my life.
I really enjoy it.
But the fish haven't really been
biting with the grasshoppers,
and so we're gonna
try a different approach.
So, this is a fishing
hook made out of bone.
And then we have
some of the line
from the inside of the
line that tawny brought.
How's it going over there?
The fish are -- it's
too late for them.
Whoa.
If we can find another person
that has more hunting skills,
that's what we're
depending on out here.
I think that would be huge.
Narrator: In tsonga basin,
where temperatures have
soared into the triple digits,
Darrin and Kim now only
have each other to rely on.
[ Ducks quacking ]
Kim: Well, the hardest
part about getting water
is definitely the sun.
We're down one partner,
and, you know, that sucks.
Kim: It's very hot. You can feel
it burning you within seconds.
Last time, I had a partner
tap out on me on day 4,
and I was by myself for 17 days.
And to kind of have the
same emotions coming up
is kind of a scary thing.
Darrin: So, you're
shaving the metal off.
Oh, yeah.
But I'm really glad
that Darrin's my partner.
He seems really eager to teach
what he knows, and I love it.
Oh, I see.
There's a tick on your leg.
Really? Mm-hmm.
Oh, yeah, that little [bleep]
Narrator: Ticks are
bloodsucking parasites
capable of
transferring pathogens
the human immune system
is ill-equipped to fight.
Might as well.
Want me to check
your armpit? Yeah.
Darrin: Kim is really awesome.
I mean, I've spent so much
of my life alone in the woods.
Last hike with Karma dog.
She's the only family I got.
She goes everywhere with me.
I mean, it's
definitely important
to have someone to talk to
out here so you're not lonely.
I'm gonna check
closer to your butt.
It's scary how little they are.
[ Sighs ]
I'll check your hair now.
I love to be pampered --
probably my favorite thing.
It's so good for you.
Kim: It's nice to have a
partner that you can relate to
and that you look up to,
and it's really a gift to be
able to do this with him.
Oh, my god.
[ Laughs ]
Darrin: We're like monkeys.
Mm.
Narrator: At pondo ravine,
the all-male team of
Steven, angel, and Ryan
has spent five days focused
on hunting big game for protein
but with no success.
[ Gulps ]
Glad you're an early bird, man.
I'm up early again
with the birds,
and making my preparations
to get back in my hunting blind.
I don't know, man.
I'm just too excited.
Taking initiative
and high motivation
is something that's kind
of been ingrained in me
due to my military experience
and fighting the war
in Iraq and Afghanistan,
so, for me, unmotivated
people do not motivate me.
Whenever you guys
are up, I'll be ready to go.
Steven: He's one of those
guys, when he's at home,
he wakes up at
4:00 in the morning
and probably goes on a
jog or a hike or something.
I'm not that guy.
Dude, I think something
already came down here.
This is a frequent
spot right here.
Damn, we already missed
an opportunity today.
Come sunrise, we pretty
much have three hours
from that time until
it's unbearably hot
and there's really not much
else we can do for the day.
Angel: Think I'm
gonna go full boar today
and just put mud all over me.
Nice, dude.
Angel: The mud not
only covers your scent
but just completely
makes you camouflaged.
And people really, like,
cover themselves in mud
and wait there all day
and literally hand-catch,
you know, deer.
Just come out -- rah!
--
and just tackle them
and, you know, stab them.
Just one.
[Bleep]
[ Mouths "no" ]
For us to hunt as a group,
it requires a lot of Patience,
and I know a lot of people
don't have that level of Patience.
[Bleep] Damn.
It's extremely frustrating.
There's more game
out here to be had.
I'm gonna make it happen.
Ow. [Bleep] Thorn in my foot.
Ow. [Bleep]
Narrator: The team of
Jake, Stacey, and Clarence
has now been traveling
by foot for over five hours
through thorny bush
and intense heat,
trying to locate a
potable source of water.
This does not look
promising at all.
Jake: You got a tick
on your right thigh.
Thank you.
Six ticks.
Stacey: If you guys
see a game trail,
I'm starting to get a little
discouraged, to be honest.
The trail is kind
of disappearing.
Looks like a dead end.
How do you want
to go about this?
I mean, would you prefer taking,
like, a 10- or 15-minute break
and letting me shoot ahead?
I'll be astonished if there's
something over there.
I just would like to
try to get to at least
what looks like the
dead end on the map,
just so I know that we
didn't turn around too soon.
Okay.
[ Exhales ]
Stacey: I really feel
like this is, like, moot.
He wants to go scout.
That's a good idea.
We need to, 'cause
there's no water here.
Yeah, this is, like,
awesome snake territory.
I'm super excited about
being here barefoot.
This would suck if
he didn't find anything
all the way up there
and we had to turn back.
Jake!
Stacey: Jake's plan to just go
ahead and scout ahead could be da
he's suffering the effects of
dehydration and heat exhaustion.
There are way too many scenarios
in which this whole
thing could go wrong.
Jake: Holy [bleep] that's crazy.
Elephant print.
That's a big-ass foot.
Could do some serious stomping.
[ Animal growls ] [Bleep]
[ Elephant trumpets ]
[ Animal growls ]
[Bleep]
What the [bleep] geez.
And that's why I don't
like being in low reeds,
right there.
Narrator: 30 minutes
after leaving his partners
in the blistering
105-degree African heat,
Jake is still seeing no signs
of a new source of water.
Jake: Out here, you
know, even though
there's water
showing up on a map,
it doesn't mean that
it's going to be there.
And I would hate to
put in all that energy
and get there and
find that it's nothing
and have to turn
around and come back.
This is where I really
wish my spear was a gun.
[ Pigs snorting ]
What do you think's
taking Jake so long?
I'm not sure.
Every step that we go
up and head towards him
is one less step he's
got to take towards us.
Yeah, and I think he
would appreciate that a lot.
Yeah. So let's
just...Keep going.
Jake: This is a little sketchy,
walking around in very
tall reeds out here...
With lots of things
that want to eat me.
[ Rustling ]
Oh. Are you kidding me?
I am seeing a
[bleep]load of water,
and I'm so freakin'
happy about it.
Coming up over this hill,
I see paradise before me.
That's a relief.
I was starting to get
super discouraged
that last little section.
Lack of water, the trail was
just getting worse and worse.
Alyssa: Hey! Who's that?! Hello?
Who's that?
My name's Jake.
Jake! Oh, my god! Who are you?
It's Alyssa!
Oh, I'm so happy.
I'm with a girls.
Nice to meet you, Alyssa.
Holy [bleep]
Oh, my god!
Are you by yourself?
I've got two teammates
way back that -- oh, my god!
It's nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
Oh, man. You guys
have got a sweet spot.
This is incredible.
Yeah. Hi. Tawny: Hi.
I'm Jake. I'm tawny.
So nice to meet
you. Nice to meet you.
I feel like I'm in heaven.
Like, I kind of died
a little last night
and then was rebirthed today.
I'm so thankful I
didn't turn back around.
[ Laughs ]
Jake seems awesome,
and he's also very positive.
I mean, I've been doing amazing.
I'm sure you have.
Thriving!
Jake is so sexy.
I'm sorry, he just is.
It's nice to have some eye
candy around here, not gonna lie.
[ Laughs ]
Where the [bleep] could he be?
I don't know.
He had to have found something,
or else it wouldn't
have taken him this long.
To come back? Yeah.
Aah! Ow!
[ Breathing heavily ]
Ow! Oh!
[ Exhales sharply ]
Oh!
Jake!
Hey! Ohh!
He would call
back if he heard us.
Oh [bleep]
Holy [bleep] Stacey.
Stacey: Yeah?
There's a giant
water hole up here.
Are you bull[Bleep] me?
'Cause I'm gonna [bleep] hit you.
Listen, I'm not bull[Bleep] you.
I'm telling you this 'cause
it's good [bleep] news.
[ Laughs ] Get
over here, Stacey.
See it?
Ye-e-e-ah!
Yeah!
Is that them? It must be.
Hello?
Marco!
Hello!
Clarence: Whoa [bleep]
I look across the lake,
and I see four naked people,
and it is the most glorious
thing I've ever seen in my life.
You made it! Whoo!
Come here!
Hi.
Hi.
[ Laughs ] Aww.
It's good to meet you.
[ Both laughing ]
Alyssa: She jumped across
and gave me the biggest hug,
and her emotion just
passed right on to me.
And, you know, I started
to get a little choked up.
[ Chuckles ] Oh,
you're so sweet.
[ Laughs ] It's gonna be okay.
Oh, hi. I'm Clarence.
Nice to meet you.
Alyssa: You made it.
I made it. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you guys, as well.
Hi. Tawny. Nice to meet you.
Clarence.
Clarence: Yesterday,
I was in a low place.
I was feeling really low.
I was feeling really sad.
This place is -- is golden.
This place is paradise.
Yeah, good call on
suggesting to move, Clarence.
Yeah. If you guys weren't
here and this lake wasn't here,
I was gonna tap.
Well, it's a sign, then.
Phaedra: I feel a little excited
because we're all together now.
It's gonna make
it so much easier
for us to survive out
here and really kill it.
Clarence is very happy,
and I'm happy for him,
because all I have heard
about for the past six days
has been the lack of water.
Oh! Jake?
Yeah? I'm about to cry.
[ Laughter ]
Kim: Darrin's hunting right
now, which is awesome.
We haven't really
eaten much, so, I mean,
I could see him feeling
a little pressure from this.
I try not to get my hopes up,
but I hope that we get
some success with it.
Darrin: Oh, my god.
Yeah!
Oh [bleep]
[ Breathing heavily ]
[ Lizard yelps ] Get
over here. Come on.
Get out of there.
That's how we get
some food in the bush.
Yeah!
A monitor -- like 10
pounds of monitor!
Bush...
Yep.
Can I hug you? Yeah.
Awesome! You did so good.
I'm so proud of you.
Look at that thing.
Like, I'm not a fan
of eating reptiles.
Even though I
know lizards are, like,
filled with nasty bacteria,
you just got to eat
what you got to eat.
There's like a
billion ticks on him.
Mmm!
Lizard kabobs for a
substantial meal in the bush.
How do you feel, provider man?
[ Chuckles ] I'm stoked.
We got food tonight.
My job's done.
Mmm. Yummy.
I think I'd like
pineapple, mushrooms,
and cherry tomatoes on these.
Oh, my [bleep] god.
That'd be so good.
[ Animals chattering ]
[ Animal howling ]
[ Growling ]
[ Howling continues ]
[ Growling ]
How'd you guys sleep last night?
I just tossed and
turned all night.
Like, I didn't... Yeah.
Clarence: Didn't get
a lot of sleep last night.
Heard some crazy-big animals.
It must have been past
midnight. It was hours.
So, yeah, this
wildlife is no joke.
There's nothing funny
about this wildlife.
Jake: I just think there's so
much stuff we can be doing right
whether it's snaring or fishing.
[Bleep] Firewood. Gathering more
yeah, first thing
we do is firewood.
Yeah. I have to chop wood.
We don't have any.
All right. Should we get to it?
Yeah, let's do it.
Clarence: It's so hot.
It's [bleep] ridiculous.
My strategy is to go very slow,
do a lot of work
early in the morning...
[ Branch snaps ] There it goes.
...and basically rest and
lie down in the middle.
And that's what
I'm gonna do now.
Holy [bleep] look at this, Jake.
Holy smokes.
It definitely looks active.
Could be some kind of
wild porcupine or a pig.
Do you think smoking something
out like that would be better?
Um, maybe what we could do
is we come back later to check it,
come back with some,
like, smoldering poo,
and then club
the hell out of it.
As the group expands, yes,
there's more helping hands,
but there's also a need
for more resources.
So, if somebody starts
falling behind with helping out,
it's noticeable.
Clarence: I'm trying to conserve
as many calories as possible
and do as little as possible.
Sometimes it appears that
I'm lazy, but I know myself.
My father died of a stroke,
and my brothers and I all have
high-blood-pressure issues.
You know, like, I can feel
my heart rate going up,
and that's when I stop.
Stacey: Now that we're
here in a new location,
I want everybody to
pull their own weight.
But Clarence must think
the universal laws
do not apply to him.
That was part of the problem
we had at the last location,
so I'm a little upset
and frustrated.
Steven: We didn't eat yesterday,
and we haven't really
eaten anything today,
so we need to break that streak.
Do I think it's best
that all three people
are hunting at the same time?
No.
But Ryan wants to do
that, so I'm willing to,
you know, entertain
it for a little bit.
Warthog.
Shh.
Warthog.
Right there.
[ Warthog squeals ]
[ Groans ]
[ Sighs ] Damn.
Ryan: The definition of insanity
is doing the same thing
over and over again
expecting a different outcome.
And it's extremely frustrating
trying to keep my composure.
Steven: How I've
hunted since I was a
I'm telling you, I
make my own thunder.
I'm [bleep] Thor.
And eventually it's gonna
be Steven Lee hall Jr. time.
[ Insects chirping ]
Jake: So, this is what
he did with firewood.
That's how much firewood he got.
And we were all working
for an hour and a half.
Phaedra: I know. I'm pissed.
I mean, you did firewood
by yourself yesterday and
got like 10 times that amount.
His whole strategy to
surviving is the most selfish,
ridiculous thing I've
ever heard of in my life.
It is. Well, that's
exactly what it is.
Clarence: I have
no gripes whatsoever
I like them a lot.
And if I can get some protein
for the group, that'll be good.
You know, helping other
people smile and be happy
helps me forget about all
my sorrows and sadness.
Clarence!
Oh, my god. Good job.
Jake: That's a big one.
Yeah, I got a fish. Good work.
It's scaled and gutted.
Nice job. Damn!
Went out, got it.
Look at that
mouth on that thing.
Good job.
Jake: Yeah. Well,
that makes me happy.
I'll get some skewers.
Clarence: And I'll
go and keep fishing.
Thanks so much.
No problem. I'll see you guys.
Anybody else feel like a
huge ass[Bleep] right now?
I didn't expect that
from him. I really did not.
No, that's great.
I might twist up
my mouth a little bit.
Yeah, me, too.
I've been waiting
for this for days,
so I'm really glad
that he did that.
I was really happy to see
Clarence catch a fish today,
I think both for his own feeling
of self worth and the group,
as well as the group knowing
that he's putting
forth that effort.
So good.
Thank you, Clarence.
That was delicious.
[ Elephant trumpets ]
Did you hear that trumpet?
Clarence: Sounds like
an elephant's over there.
Yeah.
[ Trumpeting continues ]
Look.
[ Elephant trumpets ]
Oh, my god. There's
a bunch of them. Look.
Holy! Clarence: Oh, yeah.
Way at the top. Oh, my god.
There's like a herd.
Oh, my god. There's a baby.
Jake: Oh, my goodness. Wow.
Wow!
[ Trumpeting continues ]
Those elephants working
together is a perfect metaphor
for our group and
us working together
and getting water together,
getting food together.
Sharing is caring, you know.
We -- we need to stick
together like those elephants do.
Stacey: Clarence
surprised everyone today.
Initially, I think
that I expected him
to have less depth than
he does as an individual.
Like, he is emotional in a
-- in a really spiritual way.
They're looking
out for each other.
The weak ones are looking
out for the strong ones,
the strong ones are looking
out for the weak ones.
More humans should
see that togetherness
and working together.
That's awesome.
[ Trumpeting continues ]
[ Wind howling ]
Kim: The wind
sounds really strong.
I think it might rain soon.
[ Thunder rumbles ]
The thunder here is
so different from home.
It's like really low
rumble, and you can feel it.
And you just know
it's bringing trouble.
It's a-lightnin'.
[ Thunder crashes ]
Angel: Whoo!
Ryan: [Bleep]
Whoo!
[ Thunder crashes ]
Angel: Whoo! Ryan: [Bleep]
Darrin: Gonna lay
here and take it.
It's all we can do.
Misery's setting in.
[ Bird calling ]
This is the most challenging
environment I've ever been in.
I mean, the extremes.
I mean, it was like a
50-degree temperature swing
when that storm
rolled in, at least.
I ended up, like, slithering
through dirt and thorns
to get as close to
the fire as possible.
Kim: What is in my head?
That better not be a tick.
It is a tick.
Die, tick.
Oh! Oh... Kim: I'm really
nauseous this morning.
My whole side of my
neck is just swollen.
Yeah.
Wow, yeah, you got
a big swelled-up spot
right behind your
ear right here.
It would make
sense if it was ticks
because this is
the side I lay on,
and that's where
all my bumps are.
[ Sighs ]
We don't know if
it's tick fever or not,
so there's still a chance that I
could just be having [Sniffles]
Some sort of
infection all on its own.
[ Sighs ]
Yeah, it'd suck to have to go
home because of a tick bite.
[ Cries, sniffles ]
Darrin: I really like Kim.
You know, it's like
Russian roulette out here.
I don't think there's any place
you could be in this environment
where tick fever
isn't a problem.
[ Cries, sniffles ]
If tick fever sent me home
early, I would be devastated.
I don't want to go.
[ Sniffles ]
[ Sobbing ]
Got to eat today, somehow.
Alyssa: I say kill
it with a machete
let's hope it doesn't end
up with quills in any of us.
Oh, my god.
Yesterday, Jake saw
a porcupine burrow.
So, this morning,
we are pretty gung-ho
about going to
get the porcupine.
Jake: God, I want
to eat so much.
Clarence, are you almost ready?
Yeah. I'm ready to go now.
I want to help the team, and
I want the team to help me,
so I'm going out of my way
to do what I can to help them.
But I want to do it
before it gets too hot.
And in an environment with
temperatures up to 105 degrees,
it's already bad.
If it gets worse,
could be major issues.
You good?
You okay carrying it?
Phaedra: So, today
we're gonna try
and smoke out the porcupine.
Oh, super thorny, guys.
[ Grunts ]
Oh-aah.
[ Exhales sharply ]
Of course we got to go
past a bunch of thorns
to get to a porcupine.
This is Africa.
This is pretty far from camp.
Mm-hmm.
[ Exhales sharply ]
How's it going, Clarence?
This is one of the
hottest days of my life.
[ Breathing heavily ]
You okay?
Yeah. Right behind you.
Hot, hot, hot.
No humans should be
working between noon and 4:00.
Holy [bleep] look at this.
I think those are
the ones, you guys.
We just found the
porcupine dens,
and they look pretty active.
Theoretically, if
we smoke one out,
the smoke will come out
the other end, you know.
Jake: Right.
[ Grunts ]
Get ourselves some dinner.
Jake: Right now, I'm
chopping down some of these r
to make a bit of a corral
outside of the porcupine's hole.
The thought is to
smoke them out,
and as they kind of panic,
we've got these, you know,
that, hopefully, they're
gonna get intertwined with.
Clarence: It's so hot.
All right, this is
all chopped up.
Awesome. Once
I hand this to you,
I got to have a
seat for a second.
Need a break.
Whew!
[ Exhales sharply ]
It's gonna take quite
a bit of heavy smoke
to confuse and start
suffocating this guy.
Yeah, so let's light
this bastard up.
Sure hope he's in there.
Yeah.
Just need to catch
my breath real quick.
I was getting
lightheaded chopping.
And the sun's up, so...
See, I'm sweating a bunch.
[ Blowing ]
You guys see smoke?
Yes, I definitely see
smoke coming out.
[ Blowing ]
I'm tripping out over here.
[ Sighs ]
[ Exhaling sharply ]
Don't panic. Breathe.
I need a medic.
I need a medic.
Narrator: On this
40-day survival quest,
all groups earn a "naked
and afraid xl" rating,
or xlr,
which tracks their
progress, skill, and teamwork.
After Carrie's tap-out
sent the tsonga basin
twosome's score plummeting,
Darrin's lizard capture
raises their score to 6.6.
The all-male trio
at pondo ravine
has had mixed success
hunting at its water hole.
Its xlr score has dipped to 7.2.
And at swati valley, two
teams have joined forces,
raising their combined
score to 8.1 for now.
But if the six can't find
ways to beat the heat,
Africa may pass
the final verdict.
I need a medic.
For more information
on xl ratings,
All right, Clarence,
take deep breaths.
Clarence: [ Shakily ]
Can't catch my breath.
I can't catch my breath.
[ Exhaling sharply ]
I'm panicking.
There's no oxygen.
Can't breathe.
I need a medic.
I need a medic.
I can't catch my breath.
Just try and calm
your breathing.
It's my lungs.
There's no oxygen.
I can't breathe.
[ Indistinct talking ]
I can't catch my breath.
Jake: Clarence is
not doing so well.
I don't know if it's
heat stroke or what,
but the sun's blazing
and we've been out here
and he got very dizzy.
Clarence, you with us, buddy?
Can you hear me, Clarence?
Go, go, go, go.
Stop.
1, 2, 3, go. Up!
Careful, guys, watch your step.
Jake: It's the real
deal. It's brutal.
Alyssa: I know.
You think, "oh, well,
you know, he was only in
the sun for a few minutes."
But until you actually feel
the sun for a few minutes here,
you don't even get it.
[ Siren wails ]
Narrator: After a
grueling 50-minute journey
to the nearest hospital...
1, 2, 3. Let's go.
...doctors rush
to treat Clarence
for heat stroke and
massive dehydration.
[ Whimpers ]
Narrator: Although
Clarence is now stable,
he will need to remain in the
hospital for the next 48 hours.
With a full recovery
still days away,
Clarence is pulled
from the challenge.
[ Groans ]
Stacey: I feel terrible for him.
Jake: Yeah. Alyssa: Mm-hmm.
And I'd rather see him
get medical attention
than to die out
here. Exactly, yeah.
I do not want to see
him die. Yeah, for sure.
Clarence's face is the first
face I saw on this challenge.
It's gonna be sad without him.
There were some issues,
but those things don't matter,
especially when
somebody's health and safety
are on the line.
Come to Africa, and
it's hot and it's stressful,
and your body's all scraped up,
and there's all these stresses
that we don't normally have.
Alyssa: This is a
really hard environment.
Anyone could go at any time.
I mean, even here, even
though we're in the shade,
we're still dehydrating.
You know, the heat and
everything, it's...Nonstop.
Stacey: Lesson learned
today by our team
is if we don't have
our wits about us --
which is all we got
as human beings --
most likely, we're gonna
be victims of this place.
Could die really easily.
Narrator: Next time on
"naked and afraid xl"...
You don't want
to work as a team.
You want to delegate it -- and
there you go laughing again.
You're laughing to my face.
If we were in a bar, I'd have
knocked his [bleep] teeth out.
Kim: You didn't get anything?
[ Groans ]
This could easily turn into
a life-threatening situation.
[ Leopard growls ]
Alyssa: Oh [bleep]
Jake: Are you kidding me?
[ Growls ] Aah!
[ Whimpers ] Oh, no.
Oh, holy [bleep]

Narrator: In the
drought-stricken s
a group of "naked
and afraid" veterans
are taking on an unthinkable
survival challenge...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
...to endure 40
days and 40 nights
in the most savage
wilderness on the planet.
[ Shouts indistinctly ] Hey!
To make it out alive,
they must push their limits,
master their
environment... Oh, my god!
...and survive each other.
Woman: I think it's gonna
be tremendously difficult.
Narrator: This is
"naked and afraid xl."
six days ago, 12 survivalists
began their challenge
in four separate camps.
At scorching tsonga basin,
the threat of African predators
has become all too real...
Carrie: Holy [bleep]
...forcing one of
the survivalists
to quit the challenge
and tap out.
All I'm, like, thinking
right now is it's just --
it's really overwhelming for me.
Narrator: In pondo ravine...
[ Pig squealing ]
Go, go, go, go, go!
Go! [Bleep]
...Africa bites back
as the all-male trio struggles
to put meat on the table.
Dude, he ran through
that like it was nothing.
In the green swati valley,
the all-female trio
has found a lush camp,
but Africa's penetrating heat
has left them exhausted
and dehydrated.
[ Vomiting ]
And at Sotho gorge, a bitter
clash over survival strategies
has boiled over into hostility.
Clarence: Survival situation
-- maybe it's easy for you guys
it's not for me.
You can't drink [bleep] water,
you are not gonna make it.
If I can't move to another water
source, I'm not gonna make it!
That's the stage I'm
at. So I'm gonna go.
Clarence: I want to
leave this location... right
I currently, right
now, as we speak,
think we have zero days left.
Oh, this is gross water.
The water has got poop in it.
The water is
straight-up filthy here.
The water's so shallow, I
can barely dip the pot in.
We have to get out
of here very quickly,
or we're gonna
die of dehydration.
If I have to leave on
my own, I'll do that.
My father taught me growing
up, if there's a man in the gutter,
you reach your hand down
and you help that man up.
When that man tries to
pull you down into the gutter,
you got to let go.
Guys, that water's really low.
I could barely fill up the pot.
Jake: Yeah, that's
like half a pot. Yikes.
I'd like to go to a
fresh water source --
so, a different water source, a
more abundant water source.
That's all I want, is water.
But if you want
me to stop bitching
about the water and
the heat, I can do that.
Stacey: I'm not surprised that
Clarence has reached his breaking po
I'm feeling the effects
of heat exhaustion.
We are right here.
That's our watering hole.
Clarence: Yeah. Okay.
And each day, the
water's gonna get
thicker and denser and grosser.
I feel like Clarence
might be right.
It's time to leave.
Well, I say we just
crush it, seize the day.
But even though
there's water on a map,
with the drought that
they've been having,
it could be completely dry.
There's no guarantee.
I can't believe that we've been
drinking from that for a week.
I just think about all
the possible things
that could go wrong.
We're not out here
in hiking boots.
We're out in the
middle of Africa.
It's not gonna be
a walk in the park.
Okay, this is gonna be, like,
hellacious thorns
through here, guys, so...
Got to find water.
That's all there is to it.
[ Birds chirping ]
Narrator: In swati valley,
phaedra, Alyssa, and tawny
have not eaten
for over five days
and continue to suffer
from sleepless nights
in Africa's debilitating heat.
We need to take more trips
to the water -- like, together.
I think that's a big part of
the problem from yesterday.
Alyssa: Yeah.
It's getting too hot.
Mm-hmm.
So, last night was real rough.
We had worked really
hard in the sun yesterday
and ended up getting
kind of heat exhaustion
and blistering up.
Tawny: We're
definitely at our lowest.
We haven't had food yet,
so basically water's
gonna be our food
until we get the
fishing thing figured out.
Whoa.
Phaedra: I've lived in
Alaska a lot of my life,
and fishing is a
big part of my life.
I really enjoy it.
But the fish haven't really been
biting with the grasshoppers,
and so we're gonna
try a different approach.
So, this is a fishing
hook made out of bone.
And then we have
some of the line
from the inside of the
line that tawny brought.
How's it going over there?
The fish are -- it's
too late for them.
Whoa.
If we can find another person
that has more hunting skills,
that's what we're
depending on out here.
I think that would be huge.
Narrator: In tsonga basin,
where temperatures have
soared into the triple digits,
Darrin and Kim now only
have each other to rely on.
[ Ducks quacking ]
Kim: Well, the hardest
part about getting water
is definitely the sun.
We're down one partner,
and, you know, that sucks.
Kim: It's very hot. You can feel
it burning you within seconds.
Last time, I had a partner
tap out on me on day 4,
and I was by myself for 17 days.
And to kind of have the
same emotions coming up
is kind of a scary thing.
Darrin: So, you're
shaving the metal off.
Oh, yeah.
But I'm really glad
that Darrin's my partner.
He seems really eager to teach
what he knows, and I love it.
Oh, I see.
There's a tick on your leg.
Really? Mm-hmm.
Oh, yeah, that little [bleep]
Narrator: Ticks are
bloodsucking parasites
capable of
transferring pathogens
the human immune system
is ill-equipped to fight.
Might as well.
Want me to check
your armpit? Yeah.
Darrin: Kim is really awesome.
I mean, I've spent so much
of my life alone in the woods.
Last hike with Karma dog.
She's the only family I got.
She goes everywhere with me.
I mean, it's
definitely important
to have someone to talk to
out here so you're not lonely.
I'm gonna check
closer to your butt.
It's scary how little they are.
[ Sighs ]
I'll check your hair now.
I love to be pampered --
probably my favorite thing.
It's so good for you.
Kim: It's nice to have a
partner that you can relate to
and that you look up to,
and it's really a gift to be
able to do this with him.
Oh, my god.
[ Laughs ]
Darrin: We're like monkeys.
Mm.
Narrator: At pondo ravine,
the all-male team of
Steven, angel, and Ryan
has spent five days focused
on hunting big game for protein
but with no success.
[ Gulps ]
Glad you're an early bird, man.
I'm up early again
with the birds,
and making my preparations
to get back in my hunting blind.
I don't know, man.
I'm just too excited.
Taking initiative
and high motivation
is something that's kind
of been ingrained in me
due to my military experience
and fighting the war
in Iraq and Afghanistan,
so, for me, unmotivated
people do not motivate me.
Whenever you guys
are up, I'll be ready to go.
Steven: He's one of those
guys, when he's at home,
he wakes up at
4:00 in the morning
and probably goes on a
jog or a hike or something.
I'm not that guy.
Dude, I think something
already came down here.
This is a frequent
spot right here.
Damn, we already missed
an opportunity today.
Come sunrise, we pretty
much have three hours
from that time until
it's unbearably hot
and there's really not much
else we can do for the day.
Angel: Think I'm
gonna go full boar today
and just put mud all over me.
Nice, dude.
Angel: The mud not
only covers your scent
but just completely
makes you camouflaged.
And people really, like,
cover themselves in mud
and wait there all day
and literally hand-catch,
you know, deer.
Just come out -- rah!
--
and just tackle them
and, you know, stab them.
Just one.
[Bleep]
[ Mouths "no" ]
For us to hunt as a group,
it requires a lot of Patience,
and I know a lot of people
don't have that level of Patience.
[Bleep] Damn.
It's extremely frustrating.
There's more game
out here to be had.
I'm gonna make it happen.
Ow. [Bleep] Thorn in my foot.
Ow. [Bleep]
Narrator: The team of
Jake, Stacey, and Clarence
has now been traveling
by foot for over five hours
through thorny bush
and intense heat,
trying to locate a
potable source of water.
This does not look
promising at all.
Jake: You got a tick
on your right thigh.
Thank you.
Six ticks.
Stacey: If you guys
see a game trail,
I'm starting to get a little
discouraged, to be honest.
The trail is kind
of disappearing.
Looks like a dead end.
How do you want
to go about this?
I mean, would you prefer taking,
like, a 10- or 15-minute break
and letting me shoot ahead?
I'll be astonished if there's
something over there.
I just would like to
try to get to at least
what looks like the
dead end on the map,
just so I know that we
didn't turn around too soon.
Okay.
[ Exhales ]
Stacey: I really feel
like this is, like, moot.
He wants to go scout.
That's a good idea.
We need to, 'cause
there's no water here.
Yeah, this is, like,
awesome snake territory.
I'm super excited about
being here barefoot.
This would suck if
he didn't find anything
all the way up there
and we had to turn back.
Jake!
Stacey: Jake's plan to just go
ahead and scout ahead could be da
he's suffering the effects of
dehydration and heat exhaustion.
There are way too many scenarios
in which this whole
thing could go wrong.
Jake: Holy [bleep] that's crazy.
Elephant print.
That's a big-ass foot.
Could do some serious stomping.
[ Animal growls ] [Bleep]
[ Elephant trumpets ]
[ Animal growls ]
[Bleep]
What the [bleep] geez.
And that's why I don't
like being in low reeds,
right there.
Narrator: 30 minutes
after leaving his partners
in the blistering
105-degree African heat,
Jake is still seeing no signs
of a new source of water.
Jake: Out here, you
know, even though
there's water
showing up on a map,
it doesn't mean that
it's going to be there.
And I would hate to
put in all that energy
and get there and
find that it's nothing
and have to turn
around and come back.
This is where I really
wish my spear was a gun.
[ Pigs snorting ]
What do you think's
taking Jake so long?
I'm not sure.
Every step that we go
up and head towards him
is one less step he's
got to take towards us.
Yeah, and I think he
would appreciate that a lot.
Yeah. So let's
just...Keep going.
Jake: This is a little sketchy,
walking around in very
tall reeds out here...
With lots of things
that want to eat me.
[ Rustling ]
Oh. Are you kidding me?
I am seeing a
[bleep]load of water,
and I'm so freakin'
happy about it.
Coming up over this hill,
I see paradise before me.
That's a relief.
I was starting to get
super discouraged
that last little section.
Lack of water, the trail was
just getting worse and worse.
Alyssa: Hey! Who's that?! Hello?
Who's that?
My name's Jake.
Jake! Oh, my god! Who are you?
It's Alyssa!
Oh, I'm so happy.
I'm with a girls.
Nice to meet you, Alyssa.
Holy [bleep]
Oh, my god!
Are you by yourself?
I've got two teammates
way back that -- oh, my god!
It's nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
Oh, man. You guys
have got a sweet spot.
This is incredible.
Yeah. Hi. Tawny: Hi.
I'm Jake. I'm tawny.
So nice to meet
you. Nice to meet you.
I feel like I'm in heaven.
Like, I kind of died
a little last night
and then was rebirthed today.
I'm so thankful I
didn't turn back around.
[ Laughs ]
Jake seems awesome,
and he's also very positive.
I mean, I've been doing amazing.
I'm sure you have.
Thriving!
Jake is so sexy.
I'm sorry, he just is.
It's nice to have some eye
candy around here, not gonna lie.
[ Laughs ]
Where the [bleep] could he be?
I don't know.
He had to have found something,
or else it wouldn't
have taken him this long.
To come back? Yeah.
Aah! Ow!
[ Breathing heavily ]
Ow! Oh!
[ Exhales sharply ]
Oh!
Jake!
Hey! Ohh!
He would call
back if he heard us.
Oh [bleep]
Holy [bleep] Stacey.
Stacey: Yeah?
There's a giant
water hole up here.
Are you bull[Bleep] me?
'Cause I'm gonna [bleep] hit you.
Listen, I'm not bull[Bleep] you.
I'm telling you this 'cause
it's good [bleep] news.
[ Laughs ] Get
over here, Stacey.
See it?
Ye-e-e-ah!
Yeah!
Is that them? It must be.
Hello?
Marco!
Hello!
Clarence: Whoa [bleep]
I look across the lake,
and I see four naked people,
and it is the most glorious
thing I've ever seen in my life.
You made it! Whoo!
Come here!
Hi.
Hi.
[ Laughs ] Aww.
It's good to meet you.
[ Both laughing ]
Alyssa: She jumped across
and gave me the biggest hug,
and her emotion just
passed right on to me.
And, you know, I started
to get a little choked up.
[ Chuckles ] Oh,
you're so sweet.
[ Laughs ] It's gonna be okay.
Oh, hi. I'm Clarence.
Nice to meet you.
Alyssa: You made it.
I made it. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you guys, as well.
Hi. Tawny. Nice to meet you.
Clarence.
Clarence: Yesterday,
I was in a low place.
I was feeling really low.
I was feeling really sad.
This place is -- is golden.
This place is paradise.
Yeah, good call on
suggesting to move, Clarence.
Yeah. If you guys weren't
here and this lake wasn't here,
I was gonna tap.
Well, it's a sign, then.
Phaedra: I feel a little excited
because we're all together now.
It's gonna make
it so much easier
for us to survive out
here and really kill it.
Clarence is very happy,
and I'm happy for him,
because all I have heard
about for the past six days
has been the lack of water.
Oh! Jake?
Yeah? I'm about to cry.
[ Laughter ]
Kim: Darrin's hunting right
now, which is awesome.
We haven't really
eaten much, so, I mean,
I could see him feeling
a little pressure from this.
I try not to get my hopes up,
but I hope that we get
some success with it.
Darrin: Oh, my god.
Yeah!
Oh [bleep]
[ Breathing heavily ]
[ Lizard yelps ] Get
over here. Come on.
Get out of there.
That's how we get
some food in the bush.
Yeah!
A monitor -- like 10
pounds of monitor!
Bush...
Yep.
Can I hug you? Yeah.
Awesome! You did so good.
I'm so proud of you.
Look at that thing.
Like, I'm not a fan
of eating reptiles.
Even though I
know lizards are, like,
filled with nasty bacteria,
you just got to eat
what you got to eat.
There's like a
billion ticks on him.
Mmm!
Lizard kabobs for a
substantial meal in the bush.
How do you feel, provider man?
[ Chuckles ] I'm stoked.
We got food tonight.
My job's done.
Mmm. Yummy.
I think I'd like
pineapple, mushrooms,
and cherry tomatoes on these.
Oh, my [bleep] god.
That'd be so good.
[ Animals chattering ]
[ Animal howling ]
[ Growling ]
[ Howling continues ]
[ Growling ]
How'd you guys sleep last night?
I just tossed and
turned all night.
Like, I didn't... Yeah.
Clarence: Didn't get
a lot of sleep last night.
Heard some crazy-big animals.
It must have been past
midnight. It was hours.
So, yeah, this
wildlife is no joke.
There's nothing funny
about this wildlife.
Jake: I just think there's so
much stuff we can be doing right
whether it's snaring or fishing.
[Bleep] Firewood. Gathering more
yeah, first thing
we do is firewood.
Yeah. I have to chop wood.
We don't have any.
All right. Should we get to it?
Yeah, let's do it.
Clarence: It's so hot.
It's [bleep] ridiculous.
My strategy is to go very slow,
do a lot of work
early in the morning...
[ Branch snaps ] There it goes.
...and basically rest and
lie down in the middle.
And that's what
I'm gonna do now.
Holy [bleep] look at this, Jake.
Holy smokes.
It definitely looks active.
Could be some kind of
wild porcupine or a pig.
Do you think smoking something
out like that would be better?
Um, maybe what we could do
is we come back later to check it,
come back with some,
like, smoldering poo,
and then club
the hell out of it.
As the group expands, yes,
there's more helping hands,
but there's also a need
for more resources.
So, if somebody starts
falling behind with helping out,
it's noticeable.
Clarence: I'm trying to conserve
as many calories as possible
and do as little as possible.
Sometimes it appears that
I'm lazy, but I know myself.
My father died of a stroke,
and my brothers and I all have
high-blood-pressure issues.
You know, like, I can feel
my heart rate going up,
and that's when I stop.
Stacey: Now that we're
here in a new location,
I want everybody to
pull their own weight.
But Clarence must think
the universal laws
do not apply to him.
That was part of the problem
we had at the last location,
so I'm a little upset
and frustrated.
Steven: We didn't eat yesterday,
and we haven't really
eaten anything today,
so we need to break that streak.
Do I think it's best
that all three people
are hunting at the same time?
No.
But Ryan wants to do
that, so I'm willing to,
you know, entertain
it for a little bit.
Warthog.
Shh.
Warthog.
Right there.
[ Warthog squeals ]
[ Groans ]
[ Sighs ] Damn.
Ryan: The definition of insanity
is doing the same thing
over and over again
expecting a different outcome.
And it's extremely frustrating
trying to keep my composure.
Steven: How I've
hunted since I was a
I'm telling you, I
make my own thunder.
I'm [bleep] Thor.
And eventually it's gonna
be Steven Lee hall Jr. time.
[ Insects chirping ]
Jake: So, this is what
he did with firewood.
That's how much firewood he got.
And we were all working
for an hour and a half.
Phaedra: I know. I'm pissed.
I mean, you did firewood
by yourself yesterday and
got like 10 times that amount.
His whole strategy to
surviving is the most selfish,
ridiculous thing I've
ever heard of in my life.
It is. Well, that's
exactly what it is.
Clarence: I have
no gripes whatsoever
I like them a lot.
And if I can get some protein
for the group, that'll be good.
You know, helping other
people smile and be happy
helps me forget about all
my sorrows and sadness.
Clarence!
Oh, my god. Good job.
Jake: That's a big one.
Yeah, I got a fish. Good work.
It's scaled and gutted.
Nice job. Damn!
Went out, got it.
Look at that
mouth on that thing.
Good job.
Jake: Yeah. Well,
that makes me happy.
I'll get some skewers.
Clarence: And I'll
go and keep fishing.
Thanks so much.
No problem. I'll see you guys.
Anybody else feel like a
huge ass[Bleep] right now?
I didn't expect that
from him. I really did not.
No, that's great.
I might twist up
my mouth a little bit.
Yeah, me, too.
I've been waiting
for this for days,
so I'm really glad
that he did that.
I was really happy to see
Clarence catch a fish today,
I think both for his own feeling
of self worth and the group,
as well as the group knowing
that he's putting
forth that effort.
So good.
Thank you, Clarence.
That was delicious.
[ Elephant trumpets ]
Did you hear that trumpet?
Clarence: Sounds like
an elephant's over there.
Yeah.
[ Trumpeting continues ]
Look.
[ Elephant trumpets ]
Oh, my god. There's
a bunch of them. Look.
Holy! Clarence: Oh, yeah.
Way at the top. Oh, my god.
There's like a herd.
Oh, my god. There's a baby.
Jake: Oh, my goodness. Wow.
Wow!
[ Trumpeting continues ]
Those elephants working
together is a perfect metaphor
for our group and
us working together
and getting water together,
getting food together.
Sharing is caring, you know.
We -- we need to stick
together like those elephants do.
Stacey: Clarence
surprised everyone today.
Initially, I think
that I expected him
to have less depth than
he does as an individual.
Like, he is emotional in a
-- in a really spiritual way.
They're looking
out for each other.
The weak ones are looking
out for the strong ones,
the strong ones are looking
out for the weak ones.
More humans should
see that togetherness
and working together.
That's awesome.
[ Trumpeting continues ]
[ Wind howling ]
Kim: The wind
sounds really strong.
I think it might rain soon.
[ Thunder rumbles ]
The thunder here is
so different from home.
It's like really low
rumble, and you can feel it.
And you just know
it's bringing trouble.
It's a-lightnin'.
[ Thunder crashes ]
Angel: Whoo!
Ryan: [Bleep]
Whoo!
[ Thunder crashes ]
Angel: Whoo! Ryan: [Bleep]
Darrin: Gonna lay
here and take it.
It's all we can do.
Misery's setting in.
[ Bird calling ]
This is the most challenging
environment I've ever been in.
I mean, the extremes.
I mean, it was like a
50-degree temperature swing
when that storm
rolled in, at least.
I ended up, like, slithering
through dirt and thorns
to get as close to
the fire as possible.
Kim: What is in my head?
That better not be a tick.
It is a tick.
Die, tick.
Oh! Oh... Kim: I'm really
nauseous this morning.
My whole side of my
neck is just swollen.
Yeah.
Wow, yeah, you got
a big swelled-up spot
right behind your
ear right here.
It would make
sense if it was ticks
because this is
the side I lay on,
and that's where
all my bumps are.
[ Sighs ]
We don't know if
it's tick fever or not,
so there's still a chance that I
could just be having [Sniffles]
Some sort of
infection all on its own.
[ Sighs ]
Yeah, it'd suck to have to go
home because of a tick bite.
[ Cries, sniffles ]
Darrin: I really like Kim.
You know, it's like
Russian roulette out here.
I don't think there's any place
you could be in this environment
where tick fever
isn't a problem.
[ Cries, sniffles ]
If tick fever sent me home
early, I would be devastated.
I don't want to go.
[ Sniffles ]
[ Sobbing ]
Got to eat today, somehow.
Alyssa: I say kill
it with a machete
let's hope it doesn't end
up with quills in any of us.
Oh, my god.
Yesterday, Jake saw
a porcupine burrow.
So, this morning,
we are pretty gung-ho
about going to
get the porcupine.
Jake: God, I want
to eat so much.
Clarence, are you almost ready?
Yeah. I'm ready to go now.
I want to help the team, and
I want the team to help me,
so I'm going out of my way
to do what I can to help them.
But I want to do it
before it gets too hot.
And in an environment with
temperatures up to 105 degrees,
it's already bad.
If it gets worse,
could be major issues.
You good?
You okay carrying it?
Phaedra: So, today
we're gonna try
and smoke out the porcupine.
Oh, super thorny, guys.
[ Grunts ]
Oh-aah.
[ Exhales sharply ]
Of course we got to go
past a bunch of thorns
to get to a porcupine.
This is Africa.
This is pretty far from camp.
Mm-hmm.
[ Exhales sharply ]
How's it going, Clarence?
This is one of the
hottest days of my life.
[ Breathing heavily ]
You okay?
Yeah. Right behind you.
Hot, hot, hot.
No humans should be
working between noon and 4:00.
Holy [bleep] look at this.
I think those are
the ones, you guys.
We just found the
porcupine dens,
and they look pretty active.
Theoretically, if
we smoke one out,
the smoke will come out
the other end, you know.
Jake: Right.
[ Grunts ]
Get ourselves some dinner.
Jake: Right now, I'm
chopping down some of these r
to make a bit of a corral
outside of the porcupine's hole.
The thought is to
smoke them out,
and as they kind of panic,
we've got these, you know,
that, hopefully, they're
gonna get intertwined with.
Clarence: It's so hot.
All right, this is
all chopped up.
Awesome. Once
I hand this to you,
I got to have a
seat for a second.
Need a break.
Whew!
[ Exhales sharply ]
It's gonna take quite
a bit of heavy smoke
to confuse and start
suffocating this guy.
Yeah, so let's light
this bastard up.
Sure hope he's in there.
Yeah.
Just need to catch
my breath real quick.
I was getting
lightheaded chopping.
And the sun's up, so...
See, I'm sweating a bunch.
[ Blowing ]
You guys see smoke?
Yes, I definitely see
smoke coming out.
[ Blowing ]
I'm tripping out over here.
[ Sighs ]
[ Exhaling sharply ]
Don't panic. Breathe.
I need a medic.
I need a medic.
Narrator: On this
40-day survival quest,
all groups earn a "naked
and afraid xl" rating,
or xlr,
which tracks their
progress, skill, and teamwork.
After Carrie's tap-out
sent the tsonga basin
twosome's score plummeting,
Darrin's lizard capture
raises their score to 6.6.
The all-male trio
at pondo ravine
has had mixed success
hunting at its water hole.
Its xlr score has dipped to 7.2.
And at swati valley, two
teams have joined forces,
raising their combined
score to 8.1 for now.
But if the six can't find
ways to beat the heat,
Africa may pass
the final verdict.
I need a medic.
For more information
on xl ratings,
All right, Clarence,
take deep breaths.
Clarence: [ Shakily ]
Can't catch my breath.
I can't catch my breath.
[ Exhaling sharply ]
I'm panicking.
There's no oxygen.
Can't breathe.
I need a medic.
I need a medic.
I can't catch my breath.
Just try and calm
your breathing.
It's my lungs.
There's no oxygen.
I can't breathe.
[ Indistinct talking ]
I can't catch my breath.
Jake: Clarence is
not doing so well.
I don't know if it's
heat stroke or what,
but the sun's blazing
and we've been out here
and he got very dizzy.
Clarence, you with us, buddy?
Can you hear me, Clarence?
Go, go, go, go.
Stop.
1, 2, 3, go. Up!
Careful, guys, watch your step.
Jake: It's the real
deal. It's brutal.
Alyssa: I know.
You think, "oh, well,
you know, he was only in
the sun for a few minutes."
But until you actually feel
the sun for a few minutes here,
you don't even get it.
[ Siren wails ]
Narrator: After a
grueling 50-minute journey
to the nearest hospital...
1, 2, 3. Let's go.
...doctors rush
to treat Clarence
for heat stroke and
massive dehydration.
[ Whimpers ]
Narrator: Although
Clarence is now stable,
he will need to remain in the
hospital for the next 48 hours.
With a full recovery
still days away,
Clarence is pulled
from the challenge.
[ Groans ]
Stacey: I feel terrible for him.
Jake: Yeah. Alyssa: Mm-hmm.
And I'd rather see him
get medical attention
than to die out
here. Exactly, yeah.
I do not want to see
him die. Yeah, for sure.
Clarence's face is the first
face I saw on this challenge.
It's gonna be sad without him.
There were some issues,
but those things don't matter,
especially when
somebody's health and safety
are on the line.
Come to Africa, and
it's hot and it's stressful,
and your body's all scraped up,
and there's all these stresses
that we don't normally have.
Alyssa: This is a
really hard environment.
Anyone could go at any time.
I mean, even here, even
though we're in the shade,
we're still dehydrating.
You know, the heat and
everything, it's...Nonstop.
Stacey: Lesson learned
today by our team
is if we don't have
our wits about us --
which is all we got
as human beings --
most likely, we're gonna
be victims of this place.
Could die really easily.
Narrator: Next time on
"naked and afraid xl"...
You don't want
to work as a team.
You want to delegate it -- and
there you go laughing again.
You're laughing to my face.
If we were in a bar, I'd have
knocked his [bleep] teeth out.
Kim: You didn't get anything?
[ Groans ]
This could easily turn into
a life-threatening situation.
[ Leopard growls ]
Alyssa: Oh [bleep]
Jake: Are you kidding me?
[ Growls ] Aah!
[ Whimpers ] Oh, no.
Oh, holy [bleep]
